Is the Switch 2 Version Fair to Call a ‘Downgrade’? 5ch Splits Over the Question

From our other sites

The story

A thread on 5ch’s “Hardware & Industry” (console war) board took off over how Switch 2 versions of games are being treated. It started with a post arguing that the question has shifted from “will it come to Switch 2?” to “when will the Switch 2 version come out?” — with Monster Hunter Wilds’ Switch 2 port becoming the focus of discussion. Reports that the game’s file size has been drastically cut split opinion: some called it a fair trade-off for prioritizing frame rate, while others saw it as a de facto downgrade the platform was being shortchanged with. The debate also pulled in comparisons of total title counts against PS5, Xbox, and PC, spiraling into an argument over which platform comes out on top.

The days of asking "Is it coming to Switch 2?" are over.
Now it's all about "When's the Switch 2 version dropping?"
8AnonymousSep 10, 2026 18:03
A console that can't even run miHoYo games, lol (miHoYo = maker of Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, etc.)

Re: #8
The fact that you'd even bring that up tells everyone you're a Switch fanboy ("buta"/pig, a common slur for Nintendo diehards)
24AnonymousSep 10, 2026 18:16
Re: #8
Only creepy Asian otaku play that stuff anyway
13AnonymousSep 10, 2026 18:09
Switch 2 is really the only console you need
15AnonymousSep 10, 2026 18:11
Re: #13
Consoles in general are pointless, if you ask me
19AnonymousSep 10, 2026 18:14
Re: #15
Ah, the classic "if PlayStation's losing, drag every console down with it" move.

If you were never even a PlayStation fan to begin with, why bother caring about consoles at all?
23AnonymousSep 10, 2026 18:16
Re: #15
Don't need a PS5 or an Xbox, but Switch 2 — yeah, that one's a keeper
20AnonymousSep 10, 2026 18:14
With Monster Hunter Wilds actually coming out on it, you can see why people are saying that.
At this point, pretty much the only games that can't come to Switch 2 are the ones with absolutely massive file sizes.
Realistically, everyone already knows 8K support on PS5 or Xbox doesn't actually matter, so there's no differentiation left that casual users genuinely care about.

Re: #20
The Switch 2 version of Monster Hunter Wilds had its file size slashed like crazy — it's basically confirmed to be a garbage downgrade port lol
112AnonymousSep 10, 2026 19:10
Re: #27
If the file size is smaller, isn't that actually a good thing?
114AnonymousSep 10, 2026 19:11
Re: #112
No, it's bad — it means the Switch 2 version of Wilds ends up a garbage downgrade
137AnonymousSep 10, 2026 19:17
Re: #112
Guess "Switchtsu" only has 231GB of storage 😭 (a mocking nickname for the Switch 2)
28AnonymousSep 10, 2026 18:17
But every version is a downgrade anyway, right?
Don't need any of that
33AnonymousSep 10, 2026 18:19
Re: #28
PS5 games that are themselves downgrades of the PC version sell just fine — doesn't seem like "downgrade" matters much to actual users
39AnonymousSep 10, 2026 18:21
Re: #28
This. There's zero reason to go out of your way to play third-party multiplatform titles on low-spec hardware like Switch 2 lol
30AnonymousSep 10, 2026 18:18
PS5 — premium
Shitbox (Xbox) — lame
"Suichi" (Switch, spelled with a mocking kanji pun) — downgrade
36AnonymousSep 10, 2026 18:20
Re: #30
"Premium," really? They're pushing it as cheaper than Switch 2 and that's the angle?
38AnonymousSep 10, 2026 18:21
Re: #30
Someone's running low on vocabulary
44AnonymousSep 10, 2026 18:26
Summary:

#1 — PS5
Garbage — Xbox
Garbage — PC
Trash — Switch 2

Re: #44
Yeah, no contest for "this week's sad-news console"
47AnonymousSep 10, 2026 18:30
Let's look at reality here.
Posting little "summaries" like that isn't going to change where this is heading
48AnonymousSep 10, 2026 18:31
Re: #47
Looking at reality, Switch 2 keeps getting left out, and the multiplatform titles it does get are nothing but miserable downgrades lol
51AnonymousSep 10, 2026 18:37
Re: #48
Left out that much, was it? Total title count is about 13,500 for Switch versus roughly 7,000 for PS5 — way more games come out on Switch and never make it to PlayStation. Can you actually read the numbers?
Let's start by accepting that reality
119AnonymousSep 10, 2026 19:12
Re: #48
"Left out that much"? So what does that make PS5 with an even lower title count? Starved for games?
55AnonymousSep 10, 2026 18:39
Re: #51
Most of the new titles announced at Summer Game Fest and the Xbox Showcase snubbed Switch 2 entirely
95AnonymousSep 10, 2026 19:01
Re: #55
We're talking total release counts here, so it only counts if you win on the cumulative numbers lol. "We won because of one event!!" — that's exactly the kind of thing where I have to say, look at reality
97AnonymousSep 10, 2026 19:02
Re: #95
If we're talking total release counts, Switch 2 can't beat PC even standing on its head
101AnonymousSep 10, 2026 19:04
Re: #95
Looking at reality, how many games are actually out on Steam versus Switch?
58AnonymousSep 10, 2026 18:40
PS5 is a downgrade of PC to begin with. If you hate downgrades, go PC; if you want something portable and easy to pick up, go Switch 2 — either way, PS5 doesn't really have a reason to exist
61AnonymousSep 10, 2026 18:43
Re: #58
Nobody's carrying around a big, heavy "Switchtsu" lol
71AnonymousSep 10, 2026 18:48
Re: #58
Money isn't unlimited, you know.
Being a budget PC alternative is PS5's whole reason to exist — right now it costs maybe a third of what a PC delivering the same quality would.
A little while back that gap had narrowed to about half,
but now it's widened out again.
81AnonymousSep 10, 2026 18:53
Re: #58
✕ If a PC user wants portability, get a Switch
◯ If a PC user wants portability, get a gaming UMPC with save-data sync
66AnonymousSep 10, 2026 18:45
Re: #62
A normal user would just pick PC. Switch 2's install base and market size are trash compared to PC anyway
72AnonymousSep 10, 2026 18:48
Re: #66
That's not a "normal user"
74AnonymousSep 10, 2026 18:50
Re: #72
Why not a normal user? Third-party multiplatform titles sell mainly on PC, and the Switch 2 versions bomb miserably. Did you not see what happened with Elden Ring?
80AnonymousSep 10, 2026 18:52
Re: #74
A normal person isn't dropping 250,000 yen (~$1,700) on a PC just to play games.
They already think 60,000 yen is expensive.
For most people, gaming is just one way to kill time,
and a game console is a toy —
and for a toy, the price ceiling is probably somewhere in the 30,000-yen range.
96AnonymousSep 10, 2026 19:02
Re: #74
Because it loses to smartphones on both market size and install base
120AnonymousSep 10, 2026 19:13
Re: #114
If cutting file size stabilizes the frame rate, that just means Capcom prioritized gameplay over visual quality~
If you're going to call that a downgrade, consoles have performance modes too and everyone picks those anyway
124AnonymousSep 10, 2026 19:14
Re: #120
No, file size is mostly textures. Cutting that much means the Switch 2 version ends up a miserably downgraded mess
128AnonymousSep 10, 2026 19:15
Re: #124
Right, that's exactly the point — they cut that to prioritize frame rate~
If you want quality, isn't that what a mid-to-high-end PC is for~?
129AnonymousSep 10, 2026 19:15
Re: #128
"Prioritized" or not, there's no way Switch 2's weak hardware can reliably hit 60fps

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Arguments like this rarely boil down to a simple performance comparison, since they get tangled up with the Switch 2’s dual identity as both a home console and a handheld. It’s worth noting that the “Switch 2 version of Monster Hunter Wilds’ file size” and the title-count comparisons cited in the thread are figures based on 5ch users’ hearsay and impressions, not official numbers from the manufacturers. Whether a smaller file size means lower texture quality or simply optimization that prioritizes frame rate varies title by title, and this thread split over exactly that interpretation. The same fault lines that have run through past hardware debates — exclusive versus multiplatform, performance versus portability — underpin this one too, and the arrival of Switch 2 seems to be gradually shifting where the emphasis falls.
