A post claiming “Hokkaido is cool, has no cockroaches, and the food is great” set off a wave of agreement and pushback on 5ch’s Nanademo Jikkyo G board. Critics fired back with brown bear sightings, brutal snowfall, and high prices, while native Hokkaido residents chimed in that “in the end, you always want to go back.”
It really is a great place
Bears not allowed though

Way too much snow

No air conditioning
No convenience stores
It'd be great if you could just fly south for the winter

I've got zero tolerance for them
I'm not from Hokkaido, I'm from Tohoku, but the first time one showed up in Tokyo I couldn't sleep

Hokkaido: the people are petty and vindictive, it's basically a penal colony, buried in snow, freezing in winter, and brown bears show up

They're saying it because they're actually there
Go to Maruyama Park in summer
The trees are crawling with them

How many years ago was it when snow bugs (yukimushi, fluffy aphid-like insects that swarm right before snowfall) showed up in insane numbers? That was hell
Half the year in Hokkaido is winter hell
It drops to -20°C

Bears show up even in town, right?

I'm from Sapporo, and every time I see flooding from heavy rain or 40°C+ summers elsewhere, I think the snow and cold really aren't so bad
Cockroaches actually die down when it's too hot
This year's been pretty cool, so I've been seeing them a lot
Hokkaido's probably just about the right temperature to live in

But doesn't mainland Japan actually have more bear-attack injuries?

There's no point lumping all of Hokkaido together and praising it
