  • Murakami Shoji Sidelined — Kōmoto Steps In to Fill In on ‘Yantan’

An official announcement from MBS Radio’s “Young Town Saturday” revealed that main personality Murakami Shoji will be absent from the next broadcast, with Kōmoto Jun’ichi of the comedy duo Jichō Kachō filling in for him — news that made its way to 5ch’s Hello! Project board. On the thread, the timing of the announcement set off a wave of concern about hospitalization or health problems, with some pointing to Murakami’s age (71) and warning he “could collapse at any moment.” Meanwhile, opinions split over the show’s weekly “assistant” slot filled by Hello! Project members — some called it a great chance for lesser-known members to get noticed, while others felt it placed too heavy a burden on them.

    Inoue from Jichō Kachō
    Kawai from Einstein

Background and Key Points of This Topic

“Young Town Saturday” is a long-running MBS Radio program. As discussed on the thread, the weekday slot “Appare Yattemasu!” was renamed “Yantan A” this season, while the Saturday slot has kept the “Yantan” name going. The reason for Murakami Shoji’s absence hasn’t been disclosed by the show, so thread comments about his age (71) or a possible hospitalization are purely speculation, not confirmed information. Another point of debate is the show’s weekly slot in which a little-known Hello! Project member serves as assistant — some see it as a great opportunity to get noticed on a national broadcast, while others feel it places too much of a burden on them. The fact that Jichō Kachō’s Inoue and Einstein’s Kawai have filled in before shows that Kōmoto stepping in this time isn’t unprecedented.

  • Aibou Shakes Up Its Lead Again: Terawaki Out, Oikawa In as Detective Sugishita’s New Partner — 5ch: ‘Sorimachi’s Comeback Can’t Be Far Off Either’

It was announced on October 13 that in TV Asahi’s detective drama “Aibou” season 25 (premiering October 21), the role of Sugishita Ukyo’s (Mizutani Yutaka) partner will switch from Kameyama Kaoru, played by Terawaki Yasufumi, to Kanbe Takeru, played by Oikawa Mitsuhiro. This marks the series’ fifth partner change overall and its first in five years. Mizutani commented that “the Aibou world is about to write a new chapter.” On 5ch, reactions skewed less toward celebration and more toward speculation about what’s coming next — including hopes that former partners Sorimachi Takashi and Narimiya Hiroki might return, alongside worries about Mizutani’s age and the show’s sheer longevity.

It was revealed on October 13 that in the new season of the hit detective drama “Aibou season 25” (TV Asahi, Wednesdays 9pm), premiering October 21, the “partner” of Sugishita Ukyo — played by Mizutani Yutaka — will be handed over at some point this season from Kameyama Kaoru, played by Terawaki Yasufumi, to Kanbe Takeru, played by Oikawa Mitsuhiro.

Kameyama Kaoru (Terawaki) served as the original partner through the middle of season 7 (2008), then returned as the partner again in season 21 (2022). The hot-blooded, big-hearted Kaoru often clashed with the cool, cerebral Ukyo, but the two became indispensable to each other through case after case. The “golden duo” of Kaoru and Ukyo is now entering its 12th season together in total.

Following the announcement, Mizutani commented: “From Kameyama to Kanbe — this is something only a show with Aibou’s long history could pull off. In fact, it’s the ultimate move that only Aibou could make. Ukyo himself is quietly feeling his heart race at the thought of the Aibou world beginning to write a new chapter.”

From Kanbe Takeru to Kai Susumu… Kai's a convicted murderer in the story, and the actor playing him, Narimiya, has his own real-life baggage on top of that — so even if the character got out of prison, this casting's probably off the table

    Re: #121
Funny thing, that exact claim popped up in the TV Asahi drama live-thread about a month ago.
Everyone figured it was fake and ignored it, but…

    Background and Discussion Points

“Aibou” has aired since 2000, and over the course of this long-running series the role of Sugishita Ukyo’s partner has rotated from Kameyama Kaoru (Terawaki Yasufumi) → Kanbe Takeru (Oikawa Mitsuhiro) → Kanjo Wataru (Narimiya Hiroki) → back to Kameyama Kaoru, making this the fifth changeover. Terawaki served as the original partner through the middle of season 7, then returned in season 21 — putting his combined tenure at 12 seasons. Sorimachi Takashi and Narimiya Hiroki (“Dark Kaito”), both named in the thread, are actors who have also played Sugishita’s partner in the past; since former partners have a track record of returning to the role, there’s a built-in appetite on the boards for speculating about “who’s coming back next.” As for Kanjo, played by Narimiya, the actor stepped away from entertainment work following a 2016 drug incident, which is the backdrop for why speculation about his return keeps resurfacing. Mizutani Yutaka is 74, and the thread showed real fatigue over his age and the show’s sheer longevity — notably, the dominant interest wasn’t the partner swap itself so much as “when is this actually going to end.”

*This article is composed of excerpts and a summary from the 5ch (Entertainment/Sports Breaking News+) thread “[TV Asahi] Aibou: Fifth “partner” handoff in five years confirmed — mid-season switch from “Kaoru” Terawaki Yasufumi to “Takeru” Oikawa Mitsuhiro [Ailuropoda melanoleuca★] (the giant-panda scientific name used as the news-bot poster’s handle, a common 5ch convention).”

  • French Supermarket Fridges Hit 50°C After Cyberattack — 5ch: ‘This Is Why You Don’t Put Everything Online’

A cyberattack targeting the refrigeration and freezer systems of at least 300 supermarkets across France struck between October 11 and 12. The equipment’s defrost function was remotely hijacked, pushing internal temperatures up to as much as 50°C (122°F), resulting in spoiled food and even fires at some locations. At stores in Paris, products were pulled from freezer cases entirely, leaving shelves empty. On 5ch, comments poured in along the lines of “you shouldn’t put everything online” and “smart appliances just add risk,” with users citing past incidents in Japan where companies like Nichirei, Askul, and the Asahi Group saw their logistics disrupted by similar attacks. At the same time, some raised a technical question: why would refrigeration equipment even be capable of reaching a 50°C setting in the first place?

A large-scale cyberattack targeting refrigeration and freezer equipment has hit supermarkets across France, causing spoiled food and fires at at least 300 stores.

At supermarkets in Paris, products have been removed from freezer display cases, leaving the shelves empty.

The cyberattack occurred between the 11th and 12th.

Why would a fridge even have a 50°C setting in the first place?
Is it repurposed equipment from a sake brewery or something?
    85AnonymousOct 13, 2026 13:22
    Re: #81
Isn't it just for defrosting or something? 🥺

Background and key points of discussion

It appears the attack didn’t involve a literal “50°C setting” on the fridges themselves — rather, the equipment’s “defrost” function was remotely hijacked from outside, causing the internal temperature to rise as a side effect. Commercial refrigeration and air-conditioning systems, even from major makers like Daikin and Mitsubishi Electric, are often kept permanently connected to the manufacturer’s head-office systems so technicians can respond quickly to malfunctions — and this may have served as the entry point for the attack. The thread’s claim that “China and Russia haven’t been attacked” should be taken with a grain of salt, since it’s equally possible such incidents simply go unreported there rather than not happening at all. Japan too has seen similar precedents, with companies like Nichirei, Askul, and the Asahi Group forced to halt shipments after cyberattacks on their logistics and food operations — so this is far from a problem limited to overseas.

  • Zelda Outsells GTA6 in US Pre-order Numbers — Reseller: ‘You Have to Count Digital Too’

After buzz spread that a new entry in the “Legend of Zelda” series had overtaken GTA6 in US Amazon’s pre-order rankings, a reseller who buys up stock to resell pointed out on X (formerly Twitter) that “comparing physical pre-order numbers alone doesn’t mean anything — GTA6 is a multiplatform title where digital pre-orders massively outnumber physical ones.” On 5ch’s “Hardware/Industry” (Geha) board, where this was picked up, reactions split between people conceding the point was fair, others questioning how that squares with Sony’s move to drop discs, and still others mocking the trend by citing Sensor Tower’s pre-order estimates (4.4 million in August → 5.85 million on October 5 → 5.75 million on October 13) as proof the numbers are ‘going down.’ The reliability of pre-order figures as a metric itself became the central debate.

I don’t know about anything else, but right now Zelda’s pre-order numbers are higher. But GTA6 is code-in-a-box, and digital pre-orders massively outnumber physical ones, so comparing them doesn’t mean anything. It’s multiplatform, after all.

    4AnonymousOct 13, 2026 12:11
I'd think people are actually flocking to physical copies since it's cheaper than the digital version.

You're conveniently ignoring the fact that with Nintendo, physical and digital prices barely differ.
    5AnonymousOct 13, 2026 12:12
Nintendo's pushed digital adoption every way they can — campaigns, deals that feel like a bargain, breaking down people's resistance to trying it —

so the digital ratio on Nintendo titles has gone up too.

If we're talking about the situation in Japan, isn't that exact ratio basically the whole point when it comes to distribution and retail?

    9AnonymousOct 13, 2026 12:15

    11AnonymousOct 13, 2026 12:16

    13AnonymousOct 13, 2026 12:16
This has nothing to do with resellers anyway — digital sales are stealing their job as it is.
    14AnonymousOct 13, 2026 12:17
To be fair, the previous game only moved around 300k in its first week back when digital hadn't caught on yet, so there's plenty here that smells fishy.
    15AnonymousOct 13, 2026 12:18
I mean, there's no way Zelda loses to GTA domestically, right?
It's less that Zelda's strong and more that GTA's weak here.
    16AnonymousOct 13, 2026 12:19
Fair, GTA probably does have a high digital ratio —
after all, GTA5 padded its numbers with fire-sale PC discounts and endless sales.
    17AnonymousOct 13, 2026 12:23
Is there even a point talking about 'lots of digital pre-orders' as pure speculation?
Or is that just wishful thinking?
    18AnonymousOct 13, 2026 12:24
Honestly most people don't think Zelda actually beats GTA6 once you count digital.
But GTA6's bar is its predecessor's 11.2 million day-one — so the fact that it's even being put in the same conversation as a remake of Ocarina of Time, a game whose original hasn't sold even 10 million copies, is already an embarrassment for GTA6.
    20AnonymousOct 13, 2026 12:26
Okay, so then it's no problem at all when crap-station's physical discs get discontinued, right?
Don't you dare complain about double standards again.
    29AnonymousOct 13, 2026 12:32
Once Sony drops discs, 'code in a box' is going to be the standard at retail —
and if it becomes clear that nobody even buys a GTA-tier title in stores,
then this is about as important a benchmark as you're going to get going forward.

    How is that 'meaningless'?

    Re: #85
Did people who were disappointed it's locked to 30fps go and cancel their pre-orders?

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Pre-order rankings on sites like US Amazon are commonly used as a rough gauge of pre-release sales momentum, but what’s publicly visible is essentially the pre-order count for physical copies handled by retailers — digital pre-orders and pre-purchases are often not included. Because Nintendo titles tend to have little price difference between the retail and digital versions, physical pre-orders stay strong; big multiplatform titles, by contrast, have shifted heavily toward digital, so comparing physical pre-orders alone makes them look weaker than they actually are. The Sensor Tower estimates posted in the thread (4.4 million in August → 5.28 million in September → 5.85 million on October 5 → 5.75 million on October 13) also show that tracker numbers can dip day-to-day, underscoring that pre-order data is never more than a provisional figure that can swing up or down. The thread split over two separate issues: whether the point that ‘you can’t make a fair comparison without counting digital’ is itself valid, and distrust toward the position of the reseller (a buyer who stocks up to resell) who raised it. Worth noting is that the latter tends to drift into suspicion of the speaker’s motives rather than actually examining whether the claim holds up.

  • Morning Musume’s “SexyBoy” MV Resurfaces — 5ch: “That’s Just an All-Star Visual Lineup”

On 5ch’s Hello! Project board, a poster who rewatched the recently-resurfaced “SexyBoy” music video started a thread praising how stunning the Morning Musume members looked back then. Fans nostalgically recalled the lineup they call the “Platinum Era” — Hitomi Yoshizawa, Miki Fujimoto, Ai Takahashi, Asami Konno, Eri Kamei, Sayumi Michishige, and Koharu Kusumi — with comments like “no current idol group can touch this” standing out. At the same time, some worried that all the attention on former members was overshadowing talk of the current 2026 lineup, so reactions to the renewed buzz were mixed.

    Background and Key Points

“SekuBo” is the nickname fans settled on; the song’s official title is “SexyBoy.” The “Platinum Era” mentioned in the thread is fan slang for the stretch of Morning Musume’s lineup history when members’ fame and skill were both at their peak — it’s not an official designation. The discussion split roughly into two camps: one simply praising the visual beauty of the music video, and the other worrying that renewed hype around former members might overshadow the current (2026) lineup’s activities — a divide in attention that naturally arises from the group’s long, multi-generational history. It’s also worth noting that claims like “no current idol can compete” are just individual posters’ opinions, not based on any objective measure.

As always, the entertainment industry's epidemic of mysterious "poor health."

    Background and Key Points

Hairi Katagiri came up through theater and has continued working as a distinctive character actress in both stage and film. This withdrawal was announced by her agency only as “resting under a doctor’s orders,” with no specific cause disclosed. The thread split mainly between well-wishes for her recovery and nostalgic chatter about her past work and anecdotes (ticket-tearing at the Omori theater, the surprising fact that she’s with Stardust Promotion, signature roles like “Kamome Diner”), without much speculation about an actual cause developing. One point readers could easily misread: any comments flatly asserting a cause such as vaccines are pure unfounded speculation — the agency’s statement makes no mention of a cause whatsoever. There’s also been no announcement from the agency about a replacement; names floated in the thread are purely fan speculation.

Pitch was in the zone but called a ball → Yamamoto wants an ABS challenge → Smith refuses → run scores.
That happened twice in a row.
Smith was never great defensively, but his bat was good enough to make him the starting catcher.
But at .000 right now, he's at a level where he shouldn't even be in the lineup.

I think it would've gone completely differently if they'd challenged.
In the end, both the questionable call in the 1st and the one in the 3rd would've been strikes on review (both came on 2-strike counts, so both would've been strikeouts).
Facing a team that patiently worked pitches and ground it out trying to drag Yamamoto out early, with an umpire who kept making tight calls against him on borderline pitches — and then even Will Smith, who's supposed to be on his side, skipped every single challenge. You've got to feel for Yamamoto.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The backdrop to this story is that the Dodgers are fighting through the playoffs chasing a third straight World Series title. The weight of what would be an unprecedented three-peat for an NL team makes the 0-2 hole they’re now in sting even more. Where opinion split on the thread was over where to pin the blame for the loss: criticism of manager Dave Roberts for the early pitching change, criticism of catcher Will Smith for not challenging close calls, and comments pointing to fatigue or an off night for Yamamoto himself all existed side by side. The “ABS” mentioned in the article is the challenge system that lets teams request an automated review of close ball-strike calls, introduced this postseason, and differing views on how that system should have been used are what split opinion between blaming the manager and blaming the catcher. The posts alone don’t capture the full picture — things like individual players’ fatigue levels over the course of the whole game — so it’s worth keeping in mind that this is just a slice of the reaction on 5ch.

  • Eiichiro Oda: “I Suddenly Drew Tom and Jerry Because I Hated How Serious Battle Manga Were Getting”

Eiichiro Oda has caused a stir online by saying he suddenly drew Tom and Jerry-style gag expressions in his manga because he hated how serious battle manga were becoming. This is believed to refer to the exaggerated, cartoon-style movements of “Nika” that Luffy has displayed since the Wano arc. On 5ch, two reactions stood out: comparisons noting that “Tom and Jerry actually has better pacing and more variety in its gags,” and pointed remarks about the contradiction in his statement, since “it was Oda himself who made the Celestial Dragons storyline so serious in the first place.”

    Bringing 2025 data doesn't help
    Bring 2026 data

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

“Nika” is the Devil Fruit power Luffy awakens during the Wano arc, characterized by rubbery, exaggerated expressions reminiscent of early Western cartoon animation. Oda has a history of using this art style as a release valve whenever his battle manga gets too heavy, and his latest remarks are an extension of that. The thread split mainly over two points. The first was a technical disagreement: Tom and Jerry itself draws on a wide range of expressions and gag devices, whereas Nika’s depiction is seen as repeating a limited set of patterns, like eyes popping out of the head. The second was criticism pointing out the contradiction in his statement, since it was Oda himself who chose to make the Celestial Dragons storyline so serious in the first place. There were also comments about the anime’s broadcast time slot, but those reflect individual posters’ opinions and are not treated as fact in this article.

  • Why the “500 Yen Apology Voucher” Disappeared After Corporate Data Breaches — 5ch: “Being Fobbed Off With 500 Yen Is Worse”

Since late September 2026, a string of corporate data breaches has come to light one after another: Times Car (about 6.6 million records, roughly 1.6 million of which included images of ID documents such as driver’s licenses), the yakiniku chain Yakiniku Kingu (about 10.79 million records), and Lawson (about 2.15 million records). In the past, the standard response to this kind of incident — a practice kicked off by the 2004 Yahoo! BB leak — was to hand victims a 500 yen gift voucher as an apology, but that kind of cash gesture has become much less common in recent years. On 5ch, opinions varied: some suspected companies now prioritize lobbying the media and politicians over compensating victims, while others argued that leak volumes have grown by orders of magnitude, making cash compensation no longer realistic.

Yakiniku Kingu saw about 10.79 million customer records leaked, and Lawson about 2.15 million.

    65AnonymousOct 13, 2026 11:34
    Re: #53
It starts with the politicians. And politicians are backed by companies with deep pockets. Rather than handing small one-time payments to a huge number of people, if you're going to spend money anyway, it's much safer for the company to funnel a large sum to a handful of politicians instead. This only works because the LDP has stayed in power so long — if the ruling party kept changing, problems would surface later and the company would be finished. The LDP's long reign is exactly why this scheme holds up.

I don't need some token 500 yen gesture. Times especially should at least cover the reissue fee, or the day of work you'd lose having to go apply for a new license in person.

    Re: #71
Apparently though, even after a reissue, all that changes is a “1” gets tacked onto the end of your license number — reissue again and it becomes 2, 3, 4… and after 9 it just loops back to 1. Just by looking at the card, you can't tell the old one's been invalidated. For something only used as basic ID, that's no obstacle at all for someone trying to impersonate you, since nobody actually cross-checks it the way police would.

Japan doesn't have any concept of personal information protection — we're basically a developing country on that front.

“Personal information protection”? What's that? Does that even exist in developed countries?

Starting October 1st, the Self-Defense Forces and police can now jointly strike back against those carrying out unauthorized access. They're rushing to train people for it.

But doesn't that just mean going on the offensive to steal data in return?

Well, officially it's only under the premise that the other side attacked first.

And on top of that, attackers hijack innocent third parties' systems to launch their attacks, so you can't actually tell who's really behind it.

So honestly, the real mentality is just: if you suspect someone might be an enemy, hack them first.

Background and key points of this debate

These “apology vouchers” are not a legal obligation — they’re simply a goodwill practice companies use to settle things informally. The classic example is the 500 yen voucher handed out after the 2004 Yahoo! BB leak, back when breach sizes were still small enough for that kind of response to be workable. In recent years, though, leak sizes have grown by an order of magnitude — from the hundreds of thousands into the millions or even tens of millions — and now sometimes include sensitive data like driver’s license images, making equivalent cash compensation unrealistic for companies to offer. On the thread, opinions split between those who wanted companies to invest in preventing harm and future breaches rather than handing out token vouchers, and those who felt even a symbolic gesture of compensation was better than nothing. Commenters also pointed out that Japan still lacks clear laws spelling out penalties or compensation for data leaks, which they saw as part of why these incidents keep repeating.

  • TBS ‘All-Star Night Festival’ bikini segment draws criticism — 5ch: ‘It’d be fine if everyone wore swimsuits’

The late-night spin-off of TBS’s “All-Star Thanksgiving Festival,” “All-Star Night Festival ’26 Autumn,” aired on October 10 and sparked discussion over its bikini-clad female assistant and a scene in a wall-climbing segment where a performer touched the assistant’s backside. In response to critical coverage calling it “swimsuits for no reason,” 5ch threads saw pushback — “it’s not meaningless if viewers are happy about it,” “there’s no problem if she’s doing it of her own free will” — clash with criticism that “even the Costume Grand Prix dropped its bunny outfits, so this is going backwards.” Opinions on the backside-touching also split between those who saw it as within the bounds of the bit and those who thought it went too far.

Questions have been raised about the swimsuit-clad female assistant and the behavior performers showed during an in-show segment on TBS’s “All-Star Night Festival ’26 Autumn,” which aired live on October 10.

The assistant’s swimsuit outfit: “She’s still being made to dress like this for no reason”

“All-Star Night Festival ’26 Autumn” is the late-night version of TBS’s “All-Star Thanksgiving Festival,” which aired the same day, hosted by comedian Hiroyuki Ariyoshi and former Nogizaka46 member Kazumi Takayama. Comedians take on quizzes and segments live with the kind of humor only late night allows, and whoever finishes last is permanently banned from the show.

Even Kin-chan's Costume Grand Prix dropped the bunny outfits
These days if you want something racy it's faster to just go find porn
This is just some perverted old producer's self-satisfaction

Background and Key Points of This Debate

“All-Star Thanksgiving Festival” and its late-night spin-off “Night Festival” are long-running specials that have made a tradition of racy, late-night-only segments, with swimsuit and costume bits having aired repeatedly over the years. At the same time, compliance awareness has grown across the TV industry in recent years, and networks have been rethinking how they treat female talent — for instance, NHK’s “Costume Grand Prix” discontinued its assistants’ bunny outfits. The point that split opinion in the thread was whether this counts as the kind of late-night-only entertainment viewers want, or as staging that’s out of step with the times — and differing assumptions about whether her appearance was truly voluntary caused people to talk past each other. It’s also easy to overlook that reactions to the “touched her backside” moment varied by how intense people perceived it to be, splitting opinion between those who saw it as part of the bit and those who saw it as an indecent act.
