  • Adventurer YouTuber Yutabon backs out of Todai entrance exam — 5ch: ‘Does he even know the difference between a university and a research lab?’

YouTuber “Adventurer Yutabon” (17) announced on his X (formerly Twitter) account that he is withdrawing from the University of Tokyo entrance exam after a Todai professor allegedly made a discriminatory remark about “feeling the horror of genetic factors,” saying he wants to “use it as a cautionary example.” On the 5ch Entertainment/Sports News+ thread, though, the declaration itself drew less attention than doubts over whether he ever had the academic ability to sit the exam in the first place. Longstanding suspicions that the posts are actually written by his father rather than Yutabon himself also resurfaced, and the discussion drifted away from criticizing the Todai professor and toward debating Yutabon’s own abilities and the authenticity of his posts.

    Asked an AI and lol

Given his general academic history and current situation, the probability of Yutabon getting into the University of Tokyo (Todai) from here is extremely low (close to 0%) — realistically, it's next to impossible.

Main factors behind this: Academic history — he was out of school for a long stretch starting in elementary school, returning to class in the second term of ninth grade. He later failed the general entrance exam for public high school and enrolled in a correspondence high school (Japan Airlines High School). [1]

High school equivalency exam: In 2024 he took the Upper Secondary School Equivalency Examination and passed most of the main subjects, but that only certifies an equivalent to a high school diploma — it's a world away from the level needed to sit and pass the entrance exam for Todai, Japan's most competitive university (which demands enormous exam prep from basics through advanced material, plus second-stage exam prep). What's wrong, Yutabon? Do what I do — enroll at a British university and go toe-to-toe with the Todai clique, and eventually some Kyoto University guy will wander up going 'hey, whatcha doing?' and be friends with you, Yutabon

Current activities: while enrolled at a correspondence high school, he's putting his energy into other interests like boxing and studying abroad.
Getting into Todai requires years of intense exam prep and top-tier grades, competing against the best students in the country.
Given his current path and study habits, he's not in a position to be aiming for that, so the probability is considered essentially zero.

    – Mastered speed-reading and would read every single page of the textbook, memorizing it word for word, during every 45-minute class
    – Was poor and had no intention of going to university, but his grades were SO good (a hensachi of 42 — Japan's standardized deviation score, where 50 is average) that everyone around him strongly urged him to go
    – In his third year of high school (hensachi 42), he went to visit Todai, saw all the Todai students just goofing off, thought 'I don't want to end up like that,' and lost all motivation to go to university.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Yutabon has been in the public eye since his elementary school days, when he chose not to attend school, and there’s a long history of people pointing out that his father is deeply involved in the content he posts. This latest post reignited that same longstanding suspicion — that it’s his father, not Yutabon himself, doing the writing. There’s also the fact that while he passed several subjects of the high school equivalency exam in 2024, he had previously failed the general entrance exam for public high school, and that gap between his track record and the extremely high bar of the Todai entrance exam fueled the view that he likely never had a realistic shot at passing in the first place. It should be noted that neither the professor’s real name nor the full text of the alleged discriminatory remark was presented in the thread, so the truth of that claim itself has not been verified.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Entertainment/Sports News+) thread “Adventurer Yutabon (17): ‘I’m withdrawing from the Todai entrance exam… I want to use it as a cautionary example’.”

  • Customer: “Nitori Told Me My Sofa’s 5-Year Warranty Doesn’t Cover Normal Wear and Tear”

A customer who bought a sofa from Nitori went viral on social media after being refused an exchange, told that “normal wear and tear isn’t covered” despite the sofa coming with a 5-year warranty — and the story sparked a lively discussion on 5ch. The thread expanded into a broader debate about what furniture and appliance warranties actually cover in the first place, with posters pointing out that “manufacturing defects” and “damage within the warranty period” are two different things, and sharing real-world examples of warranty claims for PCs and Iris Ohyama appliances. The discussion also turned up accounts of Nitori mattresses being refused by moving companies due to their internal structure, making for a thread packed with practical knowledge about furniture warranties and shipping.

    Well, obviously.
The warranty's meant for stuff like a leg snapping or the bottom tearing out, not "the cushion sagged after 5 years so replace it." That'd never fly.
If they allowed that, you could keep every piece of furniture permanently like-new.

Manufacturing defects usually show up within about a year, which is probably why small appliances and furniture typically get a 1-year warranty.

When you move out, shady management companies like Sekisui will try to con you by saying "we'll need to replace the flooring" and bill you for it.

I wonder how it'd go nowadays if it's cigarette smoke damage and they say "we'll need to replace the flooring." Back in the day, smoking indoors was just normal, so it probably would've counted as ordinary wear and tear.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

As a general industry standard, furniture warranties are built to cover manufacturer-caused defects and damage that shouldn’t occur under normal use (a leg snapping, the bottom falling out, etc.), while excluding ordinary wear and tear like discoloration or cushion sagging. The thread’s discussion centered on that line, with posters noting that “manufacturing defects” and “failures within the warranty period” are different things, and drawing parallels to how PC BTO warranties and electronics retailers’ extended warranties operate the same way. At the same time, the gap between that industry standard and the consumer expectation that “if you’re advertising a 5-year warranty, it should cover wear and tear too” is what sparked this whole controversy. The thread also branched into some useful practical tidbits about furniture and housing: Nitori mattresses reportedly can’t be recompressed once unpacked, so movers sometimes refuse to transport them, and dents left in flooring by a washing machine should count as ordinary wear and tear when moving out of a rental, meaning tenants shouldn’t have to pay restoration costs for it.

※This article was compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Nandemo Jikkyō G) thread “Customer: “My Nitori sofa wore out after 5 years. Despite the 5-year warranty, I was told wear and tear isn’t covered”.”

  • Child Obesity and Poverty: 5ch Says “Gummies Are Surprisingly Bad Value”

An Asahi Shimbun report featured a doctor’s observation that child obesity is deeply tied to “poverty.” The article’s claim that some kids get by on snacks and sweet buns instead of proper meals sparked a 5ch debate that started with a basic question: is candy really cheaper than rice and vegetables? Some pushed back, arguing vegetables are the better deal once you compare them gram-for-gram or calorie-for-calorie, while others shared their own experience of being forced to rely on pasta and sweet buns as fresh food like rice and napa cabbage kept getting pricier. The thread ended up highlighting just how hard it is to draw a simple line between poverty and poor eating habits.

But it's true that gummies and snacks are cheap.
Even at the 100-yen store, snacks feel like the best value for the amount you get.

By weight or by energy it's actually overpriced.
100 yen worth of gummies disappears in seconds.

Anpanman gummies are only 62 kcal —
how many kcal worth of meat and veggies can you get for the same price?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Relative child poverty has long been recognized as an issue in Japan too, and disordered eating habits are known to show up as both weight gain and weight loss. The Asahi Shimbun report behind this article cites a doctor’s observation that kids from low-income households tend to lean on cheap snacks and processed food rather than vegetables or rice. The thread split over how to read the pricing: is candy really cheaper than rice and vegetables? Some pushed back, noting vegetables are more efficient gram-for-gram or calorie-for-calorie, while others pointed out that once you factor in actual shelf prices and the hassle of cooking, sweet buns can feel like the “quick and cheap” option for some households — both views hold a grain of truth. One reply also brought up the U.S. food stamp (SNAP) program’s restrictions on certain purchases; worth noting as extra context not covered in the original article, since the link between poverty and diet quality is a policy issue overseas as well.

  • The Brutal Life Gap at 40: 5ch Thread — “I’ve Got 800 Million Yen and It Still Feels Empty”

A thread on 5ch’s “Morning Musume” board (which in practice tends to attract general chit-chat threads with nothing to do with the idol group) sparked discussion about the stark “gap” in life outcomes among people in their 40s. It started with a post noting that some people marry, build families, and live steady lives, while others stay single, still absorbed in their hobbies — and replies poured in citing hard numbers, like “My assets hit 800 million yen and it still feels empty” and “I’m a full-time employee but only take home 110,000 yen a month.” The discussion eventually spiraled into a clash over whether having a family counts as “stability” or a “liability,” and into the social backdrop facing Japan’s “employment ice age” generation.

    1AnonymousSep 6, 2026 11:17
Some guys are cruising through their 40s just fine — married, bought a house, raising kids — while others are still basically middle schoolers who do nothing but play games, watch anime, and jerk off. It's a brutal age for comparing notes.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Despite its name, the “Morning Musume” board is mostly used for late-night chit-chat threads that have nothing to do with the idol group, and this thread was no exception, unfolding as a discussion on life philosophy unrelated to any specific idol. The “employment ice age generation” mentioned in the thread refers to the cohort that entered the job market from the late 1990s through the early 2000s, when new-graduate hiring collapsed — a group still said to be affected today through higher rates of non-regular employment. Some posts pointed to labor market reforms as a contributing factor, but that reflects individual opinions from a handful of posts rather than an established causal fact. The discussion tends to get framed around a “family: liability or stability?” divide, but the replies also raised cases of married people struggling financially and single people with assets who still feel empty — suggesting the reality can’t be fully explained by a simple married/single binary.

  • ED Drug Cialis Goes Over-the-Counter — 5ch Reacts: ‘Is Half of All Men Impotent?’

The erectile dysfunction (ED) treatment drug “Cialis” can now be purchased at pharmacies through pharmacist-assisted, face-to-face sales without a doctor’s prescription. According to a survey by manufacturer SS Pharmaceutical, more than 30% of men in their 20s say they’ve had people joke about their ED, and there are calls to create an environment where people can more easily discuss sexual health concerns. On 5ch, threads gathered a wide range of reactions — skepticism about that “30%” figure, discomfort with the very phrase “joke about it,” theories on why men in their 20s would even have ED (with porn and masturbation habits often blamed), and personal accounts of online medical consultations.

The treatment drug for erectile dysfunction (ED), a condition unique to men, called “Cialis,” can now be purchased at pharmacies and drugstores through pharmacist-assisted, face-to-face sales — no doctor’s diagnosis or prescription required.

    ■ A Shift in Awareness Is Needed

According to a survey by manufacturer SS Pharmaceutical, more than 30% of men in their 20s say others have joked about their ED. There are calls for a shift in awareness so that sexual health concerns can be understood scientifically.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

In Japan, ED treatment drugs previously required a doctor’s prescription, but now “Cialis” can be bought without one, through pharmacist-assisted, face-to-face sales at pharmacies. It’s easy to overlook that this isn’t purely a self-service purchase — a consultation at the pharmacy counter is still required. What split opinion in the thread was the reliability of the survey figure claiming that over 30% of men in their 20s have been teased about ED, with many voicing skepticism that it doesn’t match their own sense of reality, while plenty of others shared personal accounts blaming porn habits, masturbation habits, or the nervousness of visiting brothels. The article’s claim that “roughly 1 in 2 men has ED” was also met with surprise.

  • Xbox’s Hail-Mary Turnaround Plan Splits Opinion — 5ch: “Japanese Third-Parties Are All Thriving Anyway”

A thread appeared on 5ch’s “Hardware/Industry (Console War)” board floating a hypothetical Xbox reform plan: “cut Game Pass prices,” “bring back exclusive titles,” “end day-one Call of Duty releases,” and “introduce time limits on the cloud version.” Rather than debating the merits of the proposal itself, the thread spiraled into a battle over Xbox’s MAU (monthly active user) numbers, with posters citing strong earnings from Japanese publishers like Capcom, Square Enix, and Koei Tecmo to counter with “Japanese third-parties are thriving even without Game Pass” — a classic console-war slugfest.

Cut Game Pass prices → users rejoice

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Comparing MAU (monthly active users) figures is a classic case where numbers take on a life of their own once different counting methods are involved. The “over 500 million” figure for Xbox cited in the thread includes Windows and PC Game Pass users, so it rests on different assumptions than console-only usage figures. Meanwhile, the strong earnings from Capcom, Square Enix, and Koei Tecmo are all results each company has already reported for fiscal periods from March 2026 onward — but that alone doesn’t prove a causal link between having (or not having) Game Pass distribution and business performance. The thread’s real fault line is which factor to prioritize — “Japanese third-parties thriving independent of Game Pass” versus “the scale of Xbox’s ecosystem” — and it’s worth noting both sides are cherry-picking only the facts that support their argument.

  • Xbox Officially Admits Profit Margins Are ‘1/3 to 1/10’ of Rivals, Game Pass Growth Stalls Too

In July 2026, Microsoft revealed in its official blog post “Resetting Xbox” that some of its gaming investments are losing 64 cents for every dollar spent, and that its profit margins remain at just one-third to one-tenth of those of its competitors. Even after launching its ninth-generation console, the installed base has kept shrinking, and while the company pinned its hopes on Game Pass and a multiplatform strategy, growth has fallen short of expectations. Following this announcement, users on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board debated the causes behind sluggish console sales, whether Game Pass is actually profitable, and whether Xbox should bring back exclusive titles.

“We’ve also learned that we aren’t the best home for every type of studio. Typically, for every dollar Xbox invests, we lose 64 cents.”

“Right now, our business isn’t healthy. Our profit margins are only about a third to a tenth of what comparable platform and publishing businesses see.

With the launch of our ninth-generation console, our installed base shrank while our cost structure grew. In pursuit of growth, we bet on Game Pass, multiplatform releases, and a broader content portfolio.

    Just 'continuing' isn't enough.
Xbox's packaged-game market is already wiped out, so they'd need to say they're doubling down on reviving it to win over the physical-media crowd.
As it stands, third parties tend to skip discs for download-only releases, retailers won't stock them, and even Microsoft's own titles ship as 'key discs' with no actual game data on them.
That's not going to convince the people shouting 'no disc, no buy.'
    46AnonymousSep 6, 2026 11:29
Bringing back exclusives is only natural. Game consoles are built on the back of exclusive titles. If you go multiplatform just to chase quick cash, the whole platform collapses. If they're giving up on exclusives, they might as well just pull out of hardware entirely (´・ω・`)

What makes this tricky is that leadership is genuinely reflecting on it
Microsoft as a whole makes something like 20 times Sony's profit, so they're not pulling out

What they're boosting is strictly the profit 'margin,' so of course actual revenue keeps tanking.
It's obvious that mass layoffs plus cutting the product lineup will improve the 'margin' in the short term.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

This admission comes from “Resetting Xbox,” a document Microsoft itself posted on its official site in July 2026, in which the company’s own leadership acknowledged the struggles of its hardware business. In the thread, opinions split between those who blamed the low profit margins on going multiplatform and raising Game Pass prices, and those who argued that Microsoft as a whole remains hugely profitable and has no reason to worry about pulling out. Some also pointed out that ‘profit margin’ can be improved simply through layoffs or a shrunken game lineup, sparking discussion about the danger of judging a business’s health by margin alone. While some users called for a return to exclusive titles, others noted that Xbox never really had many exclusives to begin with, leaving many skeptical that any turnaround plan would actually work.

In the anime That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, Chloe and Hinata time-leap 2000 years into the past, repeating a loop while keeping their consciousness intact until the sealed Chronoa awakens. On 5ch’s live-reaction thread, some said “staying sane through 2000 years is worse hell than Re:Zero’s Subaru,” while others pointed out that the series already features characters like the True Dragons and the Primordials who live far longer than 2000 years, and that Awakened Heroes also stop aging — so the number actually fits the story’s own timeline, splitting opinion. Fans who’ve read the source material also weighed in on how Chloe and Hinata’s souls and bodies are being handled, the power ranking between the True Dragons and the Primordials, and how the Shion vs. Razul fight is being treated.

Realistically, Chloe needed to spend a good number of years before she and Leon even got transported over.
Stuff like Veldora destroying Luminous's capital lines up with roughly 2000 years ago, so I think that number was actually thought through pretty carefully.

Grown-up Chloe is way too pretty.

They said two versions of the same person can't exist in the same space-time — but since Hinata died and got sent back 2000 years along with Chloe, wouldn't whichever consciousness (Chloe's or Hinata's) is inside present-day Chronoa come back?

Haven't read the source material, but I'd guess once she wakes up they'll put Hinata's soul back into Hinata's body and revive her.

    38AnonymousSep 6, 2026 06:24

It got written up in a fair amount of detail in the source material, but I've got a feeling the anime's just gonna end it as a quick result report.
    93AnonymousSep 6, 2026 10:35
Well, I guess going forward it does mean 'if we lose to an enemy, we can just redo it,' huh.

Nobody knows how he'd even avoid it.
But just becoming an Awakened Demon Lord alone should've bumped his odds of surviving up quite a bit compared to before.

Doesn't Chloe go insane from repeating a 2000-year loop?
    111AnonymousSep 6, 2026 11:40
    Re: #109
    Same thought here.
Not sure if it's just that Chloe's mental fortitude is freakishly strong, or if some kind of power/authority is propping her up.
    115AnonymousSep 6, 2026 11:47
    Re: #109 Re: #111
Maybe she really is cracking and piling up negative emotions, but it's all draining into Chronoa, which is what lets Chloe stay sane.
Or the other way around — maybe Chronoa's absorbed so much of it that it's turned into an embodiment of evil. Just speculating.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime started out as a popular web novel, and the anime is currently adapting a later part of the source material — the time-leap episode tied to Yuuki and Hinata. The thread’s disagreement centered on two main points. First was the weight of the ‘loop 2000 years while staying fully conscious’ setup: some invoked Re:Zero and called it ‘hell,’ while others countered that the series already has plenty of characters — like the True Dragons and the Primordials — who’ve lived far longer than 2000 years, and that since Awakened Heroes also stop aging, the number actually matches the story’s own timescale, offering a defense of the choice. Second was how Chloe and Hinata’s souls and bodies are being handled: the rule that two souls can’t exist in the same space-time at once, and the true identity of the sealed Chronoa (whether it holds Chloe’s or Hinata’s consciousness), were hard to follow for those who haven’t read the source material. Some also pointed out that earlier remarks from Ramiris and Noir had already hinted at the time-leap, suggesting it was foreshadowed rather than out of nowhere. Note that all of this is fan speculation about in-story lore, not confirmed information.

  • Members Who Ended Up in Morning Musume. Without Even Wanting To Join Are Trending — 5ch: ‘A Huge Step Up From Wanting Angerme’

A thread on 5ch’s Hello! Project board asked which members had wanted to join Morning Musume. but ended up assigned to a different group instead. The thread kicked off with names like Goto Hana, Kawashima Mifu, Onoda Saaya, and Tanimoto Ami already on the table, and replies brought up the reverse case of Okamura Homare, who scored a “huge promotion” from wanting Angerme to landing in Morning Musume., as well as the oft-repeated story that Tanaka Reina and Michishige Sayumi once said they “wanted to be in Morning Musume., not just a celebrity.” At the same time, some posters questioned how much of this “who wanted what” talk is actually based on the members’ own words versus just fan speculation, so the discussion didn’t stay a simple list of names.

    ♛︎ Sasaki-san — Ebata Hisaki
When I was debating whether to join the Hello! Project trainees, it was my mom who told me about Sasaki-san.
I was blown away by how cute Sasaki-san was, and that's why I joined Hello! Project.
Both when I joined as a trainee and when I debuted, I've named Sasaki-san as the senior member I admire — and going forward, Sasaki-san will still be who I admire!

    Re: #57
Yuriya said recently that she wanted to join Tsubaki Factory

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

It’s not unusual in Hello! Project for the group someone hoped for at audition time to not match where they actually get assigned. Successful applicants go through a trainee period, and it’s ultimately up to the agency whether they end up in Morning Musume., Angerme, Juice=Juice, or elsewhere — there’s no guarantee your first choice goes through. The case of Okamura Homare (wanted Angerme → ended up in Morning Musume.) raised in the thread is a classic example of this, and the story that Tanaka Reina and Michishige Sayumi once said they “wanted to be in Morning Musume., not just a celebrity” is an anecdote that keeps getting repeated within Hello! Project fandom. That said, as post #57 points out, it’s worth noting that many of these “who wanted what” stories circulate without it being clear whether they’re the members’ own official statements or just fan hearsay and speculation — and as post #35 also notes, “the member you admire” and “the group you wanted to join” are separate things that shouldn’t be conflated.
