  • Wanna Go Back to 1985: 5ch Users Say ‘Japan Partied Every Single Day Back Then’

A thread that began with the post “Going to sleep now — hope I wake up back in 1985” got posters who lived through the era sharing their Showa-period memories one after another. The fragments piled up: how the catchphrase in the Sazae-san anime had switched to “Luxury is wonderful,” the shock of seeing Gradius and Space Harrier at the arcade, and the long lines for Bikkuriman chocolate. At the same time, cooler heads chimed in with “Going back would just mean living the exact same life over again” and “Games and entertainment were actually worse back then” — and that gap between nostalgia and reality became the thread’s central tension.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The “1985” discussed in this thread actually falls just before Japan’s full-blown bubble economy (the extreme surge in land and stock prices) truly kicked off. The yen’s appreciation following that year’s Plaza Accord triggered monetary easing, and land prices are generally said to have accelerated from around 1987 onward, with the so-called “bubble economy” peaking in the late 1980s. That means the thread’s shared memory of “a festival atmosphere every day” is probably better understood as an impression blending the back half of the ’80s rather than 1985 specifically. The thread also shows a split between those who say “going back would just mean reliving the same painful life” and those who insist “that era was the peak” — worth noting, though it’s not addressed directly in the posts, is that this nostalgia for the past likely stemmed not so much from how high the standard of living actually was, but from a sense of optimism about the future and the novelty of the entertainment available at the time.

  • Knight Scoop’s New Secretary Is Rookie Announcer Misaki Takiguchi, Saori Masuda Graduates — 5ch: ‘Bring Back Mari Okabe’

It’s been revealed that Misaki Takiguchi (23), a rookie announcer just six months into her career at ABC TV, has been chosen as the fifth “secretary” on “Detective! Knight Scoop.” Freelance announcer Saori Masuda (29), who has served as secretary since November 2019, will graduate from the show after the March 25 broadcast. On 5ch’s live-discussion threads, alongside comments welcoming the new secretary, posters raised doubts about the show continuing with a rotating “special assignment chief” in Hitoshi Matsumoto’s absence, and noted that few Osaka-based announcers manage to thrive after going freelance.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The role of secretary on Knight Scoop has been passed down between ABC announcers since the show began in 1988, starting with the very first secretary, Mari Okabe, making Takiguchi the fifth in that line. Much of Masuda’s tenure as secretary overlapped with the irregular arrangement in which a different guest fills in each week as “special assignment chief,” a workaround that’s been in place since Hitoshi Matsumoto went on hiatus at the end of 2023 — and threads repeatedly voiced frustration with that arrangement itself. Posters also noted that on a separate show, Masuda had spoken about looking at her pay statement right after going freelance and realizing she couldn’t make a living off it, tying that into the broader reality that only a handful of Osaka-based announcers — such as Seiji Miyane and Jiro Shimbo — have managed to land stable freelance work. On the whole, the thread’s focus landed less on the new secretary herself and more on the show’s structure and the uncertain career path facing female announcers.

  • Man Googles JAF for Roadside Help, Gets Fake Company Instead — Threatened Into Handing Over ¥300,000

In Adachi Ward, Tokyo this past May, a man in his twenties whose car had broken down searched for JAF (Japan Automobile Federation) on his smartphone and called the contact number that came up. What he actually reached, though, was a fake operator believed to be tied to “Tokuryu” — a loosely organized crime network — and the man who showed up threatened him into handing over ¥300,000 in cash. Two people, including an executive at a roadside-service company, have been arrested. On 5ch, the thread splits between people questioning how a fake company could slip into search results in the first place (an ads/SEO problem) and others pointing out he could have simply used the roadside-assistance rider on his auto insurance instead.

    ■ Was the man who showed up linked to “Tokuryu”?

The person arrested is Shin Akimoto (24), an executive at a roadside-service company.

This past May, a man in his twenties whose car broke down in Adachi Ward, Tokyo, searched on his phone to call JAF. He reportedly called the contact number that came up in the results.

And all I typed was just
    jaf
So how'd he end up picking a different site?

Background and key points of this discussion

“Tokuryu” (anonymous, loosely-affiliated crime networks) is a term that has become common in recent reporting on phone scams and robberies, characterized by ringleaders and low-level operatives who form and disband on a disposable, ad-hoc basis. This particular scheme looks like a form of “search fraud,” where victims connect with a fake operator hidden among search results or ad slots and are then hit with an inflated bill in person. The thread is split between commenters arguing that “searching for JAF only turns up JAF” and others noting that combined search terms like “tow truck” or “cheap” can surface ads and fake sites — and the article alone doesn’t clarify exactly what search terms the victim used. Many auto insurance policies also come with a roadside-assistance rider that can provide free or low-cost help with just a call to the insurer, but non-members or those without that rider may have no choice but to search for a provider this way.

Background and Key Points of Discussion

“Kokuho” is a film running over three hours that depicts the world of kabuki, and opinions on it were already split at its theatrical release, with comments ranging from “visually beautiful” to “the back half falls short.” For the terrestrial broadcast, the focus is on how the main feature will be edited for TV, with some in the thread citing the precedent of Friday Roadshow expanding its slot to four hours to air “The Sun That Never Sets” (Shizumanu Taiyo). There was also discussion of how visuals crafted for the big screen translate to a TV screen, as well as changing viewing habits where people tend to avoid long films on streaming platforms. Many comments also noted that the film’s reputation as the highest-grossing Japanese film of all time has taken on a life of its own, with sky-high expectations ironically becoming a barrier to actually watching it.

  • Satoh Teruaki, Taira Kaima, and Ito Hiromi eyeing MLB moves this offseason?

ESPN reporter Jeff Passan reported on September 10 (September 11 JST) in an article surveying this offseason’s MLB market that three players — Seibu’s Taira Kaima, Hanshin’s Satoh Teruaki, and Nippon-Ham’s Ito Hiromi — are exploring MLB moves via the posting system. The report comes at a sensitive time, with the current collective bargaining agreement set to expire on December 1 and a lockout expected, which could affect how aggressively teams pursue reinforcements this offseason. On 5ch, reactions centered heavily on Satoh Teruaki, with opinions split between those who believe Hanshin — chasing back-to-back-to-back titles next year — would never let go of a core hitter, and those who think the team would approve the posting given the posting fee and last year’s contentious contract renewal talks.

ESPN’s ace reporter reports on the possible U.S. moves via the posting system for Seibu’s Taira Kaima, Hanshin’s Satoh Teruaki, Nippon-Ham’s Ito Hiromi, and others (Sports Hochi) – Yahoo! News

ESPN’s ace reporter J. Passan published an article on the 10th (the 11th JST) surveying this offseason’s free agent market. He notes that with the current collective bargaining agreement set to expire on December 1, followed by an expected lockout, teams are likely to be cautious about reinforcing their rosters this offseason.

He adds that pitcher Taira Kaima (26) of Seibu, infielder Satoh Teruaki (27) of Hanshin, and pitcher Ito Hiromi (29) of Nippon-Ham appear to be aiming for the majors via the posting system. Taira draws the most attention in the article.

Their average velocity and ERA are just too different
Ito Hiromi's strength is being an innings-eater, but I think he'd give up too much in MLB to even rack up innings there

Background and key points of this discussion

The posting system only goes through if the team approves it — a player’s wish alone isn’t enough to make a move to the majors happen. Hanshin still holds Satoh Teruaki’s rights for two more years before he reaches free agency, and the thread was split between those who think the team would approve a posting if a hefty fee is on offer, and those who think roster needs for a title defense mean they won’t let him go. Meanwhile, opinions on Taira Kaima were mixed: his high fastball whiff rate in relief and varied breaking pitches drew praise, but some worried about his high pitch counts as a starter. And for Ito Hiromi, skeptics were vocal that his innings-eater profile might not translate to MLB, where he could give up too many long balls to rack up innings. Also worth noting: with the current CBA set to expire December 1 and a lockout expected, the timing could affect how teams approach reinforcements and posting negotiations this offseason.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“The Odyssey” is based on the ancient Greek epic of the same name, and proper nouns appearing in the film, such as Circe, come straight from the original text. It’s often confused with the similarly titled 2015 film “The Martian” (Japanese title “Odyssey,” starring Matt Damon, original English title The Martian), but the two stories are completely unrelated. Nolan shot this film entirely with IMAX cameras, so the thread’s claim that “you don’t get the intended visual effect unless you watch it on an IMAX screen” has real backing in how the film was made. Note that the ¥265.4 billion figure is a worldwide cumulative total, not the opening-day results in Japan — an easy point to mix up. The thread also brought up the old theory that the Japanese folktale “Yuriwaka Daijin” derives from the Odyssey, but this is an academically debated hypothesis, not an established fact.

  • Backlash Grows Against ‘Switch 2 Is Portable’ Claims — Cloud-Streaming Fans and Handheld Diehards Clash

A Nintendo Switch 2 user’s claim that “the Switch 2 version can be played portably lol” sparked pushback in a 5ch thread, with users countering that smartphone cloud streaming also plays with almost no noticeable lag. The thread saw an ongoing clash between fans of native handheld hardware and streaming advocates, with the discussion expanding to cover the merits of portable devices like UMPCs, the Steam Deck, and PS Portal, price gaps of over 300,000 yen, and the connection hassles unique to remote play. At the heart of the debate was what the word “portable” actually means in terms of real-world experience.

    Re: #85
    That's normal
Anyone who actually tries remote play quickly realizes how much of a hassle it is
The people singing its praises like this are just the weird ones

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Cloud gaming refers to systems that transmit video from a console or PC over the internet to a device like a smartphone, with Xbox Cloud Gaming and PS Remote Play as prime examples. PS Portal, mentioned in the thread, is a dedicated remote-play device that can’t run games on its own — it requires a live internet connection to a PS5 console — which is a fundamentally different setup from the Switch 2, which stores game data internally and can boot up standalone. Without accounting for that difference, it’s hard to convey what kind of experience the word “portable” actually points to. Also worth noting: UMPCs (mini-PC-style handheld gaming devices) range in price from roughly 100,000 to 400,000-plus yen depending on the model, so the “300,000 yen price gap” cited in the thread assumes comparison with a high-end model. The thread weaves together multiple points of contention — tolerance for lag, the hassle of connecting, and price-to-performance — without reaching any consensus on which approach is better.

On September 10, the FF 40th Anniversary Exhibition Executive Committee announced it will hold a commemorative exhibition titled “The World of Never-Ending Fantasy” at the Tokyo National Museum. The centerpiece is a collaboration with cultural treasures held by the museum. Following the announcement, a thread on 5ch’s Entertainment & Sports News+ board quickly moved past the exhibition itself and into the fandom’s favorite argument: which entry in the series reigns supreme. Old-guard fans championing 3, 4, and 6 clashed with those who favor the CG-driven direction from 7 onward, while gripes about the Magicite and ability-training systems and affectionate riffs on characters like Tifa flew back and forth.

False advertising on the 'Final' part

Background and Key Points of This Topic

What makes this announcement unusual is that the Tokyo National Museum — a bastion of Japanese art and craft — is collaborating with “Final Fantasy.” Rather than dwelling on that history, though, the thread quickly reignited the fandom’s perennial debate: which numbered entry is the greatest. The split between the “literary” camp favoring 3, 4, and 6, and those who favor the CG-driven direction from 7 onward, is a rivalry that has played out among FF fans for years, and this was simply another rerun of it. The complaints calling stat-boosting via Magicite and abilities a “garbage mechanic” stem from a distinctly old-school gamer viewpoint: too much freedom in character building ends up draining the tension out of playing strategically. Note that the thread also contained several posts mocking politicians by name and including sexual content, but since these were unrelated tangents to the exhibition news, they have been excluded from this article. Neither the exact timing nor further venue details beyond what’s noted were specified in the original article, so more information awaits a follow-up report.

  • Comedian Cunning Takeyama Apologizes After Botching Legendary Giants Batting Order in Tribute to Harimoto

Comedian Cunning Takeyama has apologized on X after paying tribute to former pro baseball star Isao Harimoto, who died on the 9th, on a TV show — where he cited the batting order as “3rd Nagashima, 4th Oh, 5th Harimoto,” which turned out to be inaccurate. On the thread, opinions split over his excuse of “misremembering something from childhood,” with the discussion spreading into a debate over how much of Nagashima and Oh’s playing days a 55-year-old like Takeyama could actually have witnessed, and further into pointers that the Giants’ real batting order back then wasn’t fixed but shifted over time. The topic gradually drifted into comparing memories of historic batting orders and famous moments in pro baseball.

Cunning Takeyama Apologizes for Saying “3rd Nagashima, 4th Oh, 5th Harimoto” — “Sorry, I misremembered from when I was little”

Comedian Cunning Takeyama (55) updated his X account on the 10th, apologizing for comments made that same day on TBS’s “Gogo Sma” (weekdays 1:55 PM).

On the show, Takeyama paid tribute to former pro baseball player Isao Harimoto, who died on the 9th. He had commented things like “3rd Nagashima (Shigeo), 4th Oh (Sadaharu), 5th Harimoto.”

I Googled Nagashima's managerial career and here's what I found:

    First stint as manager (1975-1980)
In 1975, the year after he retired as a player, he became Giants manager.
His first year ended in the team's first-ever last-place finish, but by 1976 — helped by the addition of Isao Harimoto and others — he'd turned things around and won the pennant.
He resigned after the 1980 season, taking responsibility for poor results.

    Second stint as manager (1993-2001)
He returned as Giants manager in 1993.
He rallied the team with buzzwords like "Make Drama" and "Make Miracle," winning the pennant in 1994, 1996, and 2000, plus the Japan Series title in 2000.
He stepped down after the 2001 season and later became lifetime honorary manager.

Didn't know about the first stint — I watched under Fujita, right before the second stint, and liked that team.
The second stint felt like they just collected sluggers who couldn't move anymore, so I wasn't a fan.

Maybe it's thanks to Aladdin's song 'Ganbare Giants!!,' but I somehow still remember the batting order from the tail end of the V9 dynasty (the Giants' nine-straight-championship run).

Quite a few people know the Chunichi Dragons' batting order from Bandou's song too.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Isao Harimoto was one of the greatest sluggers of the postwar era, spending most of his long career with the Toei Flyers and Lotte Orions, and playing for the Giants only in the final few years of his career. The thread split mainly over two points: one, a generational debate over how much of Nagashima and Oh’s playing days a 55-year-old Takeyama could actually have witnessed firsthand; the other, a historical-accuracy argument that the Giants’ 3rd and 4th spots actually swapped between Nagashima and Oh depending on the era, making it hard to simply call this a “misremembering.” Criticism of Takeyama himself stayed fairly limited, with a notable strand of defense arguing a slip this minor wasn’t worth attacking. What readers might easily miss is that reactions weren’t uniformly critical — fact-checking from baseball history buffs and casual chatter about generations and memory were unfolding side by side.

  • Ogiyahagi’s Yahagi Agonizes Over Buying the iPhone Duo: “Even the Cheapest Is $2,400, and the 2TB Model Is $3,800”

Kaneshiro Yahagi of the comedy duo Ogiyahagi revealed on his late-night radio show on September 10 that he’s torn over whether to buy Apple’s newly announced foldable iPhone, the “iPhone Duo.” The cheapest 256GB model costs 364,800 yen, while the top-end 2TB model runs 574,800 yen — meaning a couple buying matching phones would spend over 1 million yen combined. On 5ch, a thread about the pricing sparked mixed reactions. Some worried about the security risk of carrying around such an expensive device, or pointed to the overall rise in smartphone prices, while others argued it’s still cheaper than a luxury watch, or noted that foldable phones simply haven’t caught on in Japan yet.

Kaneshiro Yahagi of the comedy duo Ogiyahagi appeared late on September 10 with his partner Hiroaki Ogi on the radio program “Thursday JUNK: Ogiyahagi no Megane-biiki” (TBS Radio), where he talked about being unable to decide whether to buy the “iPhone Duo,” announced by Apple earlier that same day (Japan time).

The model is Apple’s first-ever foldable iPhone. In Japan, it’s priced at 364,800 yen for the 256GB version and 574,800 yen for the 2TB version (all prices include tax).

It's scary enough that even average people now think nothing of dropping 150,000-200,000 yen on a phone
Spending that much on something you just use to check social media and watch videos — that's basically a sickness at this point (´・ω・`)

    Background and Key Debate Points

The iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable iPhone, joining a lineage of foldable devices that other manufacturers have already released overseas. In Japan, foldable smartphones remain a niche product, and this model’s price far exceeds that of even the top-tier existing iPhones. The thread split over whether to view this pricing as “reasonable for a luxury item” or as “brand dependency gone too far.” While some argued it’s still cheap compared to other luxury goods like high-end watches, plenty of others questioned the very idea of spending this much on a device mainly used for calls and social media. It’s worth noting, as a premise of the article, that Yahagi never said he lacked the funds to buy it — his hesitation was purely about the psychological hurdle of using it in public, not about affordability. The fact that foldable phones still have low adoption in Japan also shaped the thread’s overall tone.
