  • New Metroid ‘Ravenas’ Trailer Hits 2.77M Views, Said to Have Already Surpassed Dread

A thread went up on 5ch’s “Hardware & Industry” (Geha) board reporting that the trailer for Nintendo’s new game “Metroid Ravenas” has hit 2.77 million views, surpassing the view count of its predecessor, “Metroid Dread.” Dread, released in 2021, was a hit that sold over 3 million copies — the best-selling entry in the series — arriving right as the indie “Metroidvania” genre was booming. The thread branched into comparisons of how Nintendo titles land domestically versus overseas, citing the Kirby series’ growing overseas popularity since going 3D and the high view count for “Yo-kai Watch 2,” while opinions split over how to weigh Dread’s sales against Hollow Knight’s worldwide total of over 15 million copies.

The trailer's already at 2.77M views, past Dread's numbers
    And it's still climbing
By the way, it's beaten Dread's view count in Japan too — this Metroid is getting serious attention here as well
    4AnonymousSep 12, 2026 09:15
Funny how nobody on Geha is even talking about it.

Well, Geha's basically a retirement home for a dying minority at this point.
    14AnonymousSep 12, 2026 09:22
People kept saying Dread wouldn't sell since there are so many great indie Metroidvanias out there,
but it sold just fine — turns out demand's always there.

    Re: #14
There are plenty of great indie Metroidvanias, sure,
but they still get buried under the competition.
Nintendo keeps the IP visible over the long haul, which builds awareness,
so when it comes down to the same game, the big publisher wins.
    37AnonymousSep 12, 2026 09:39
    Re: #14
Sure, Metroidvania's having a moment, but there's still a real bias that 'Metroidvania = cheap indie game,' and it's rare for a major publisher to throw this kind of budget at one.

Dread was built out carefully in 3D even in the background, but going by the trailer, Ravenas' model detail looks like a big step up from Dread's.

With cheap titles like Hollow Knight and Ender Lilies being the norm now, selling that well at that price point is impressive.
    The revenue must be substantial.

Both Kirby titles are pulling insane view counts, but is the US side stronger? Surprising.
Also, turns out Yu-Gi-Oh! is quietly massive overseas lol

America being stronger is probably real,
but the North American Nintendo Direct numbers spike because "everyone in the English-speaking world watches it at once" —
the UK, Canada, and Australia are English-speaking too.

Kirby broke out with the previous game, Forgotten Land — 2 million sold in Japan versus over 7.5 million worldwide, so its overseas user base grew a lot.

Kirby's North American audience seems to have exploded once it went 3D with Forgotten Land.
This new one looks like it's scaling up even further, semi-open-world or bigger, so strong overseas reception was expected.

That figure's as of end of March 2024, so it's probably grown to around 9 million by now.

    Yo-kai Watch 2 at 2.35M views, that's insane lol

So it's Ocarina of Time, then Yo-kai Watch? lol
    111AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:39
    Re: #34
Yo-kai Watch 2 originally sold several million, so that tracks.
Domestically, Ocarina of Time's view count and pre-order momentum are actually more surprising, since the original barely scraped a million copies and ended up in bargain bins.
It's well-known and influential overseas, and recognized in Japan too, but there probably aren't that many people with real nostalgia for it.

    Re: #53
For a 3D Metroid, the bare minimum hurdle is becoming the "second game" pick for people who bought a 3D Zelda — it doesn't even get in the ring until it clears that.
    48AnonymousSep 12, 2026 09:48
    It's an undeniable masterpiece.
Sold over 3 million, the best-selling Metroid ever.
Hopefully Ravenas ends up beating that number.
Bananza's already past 4 million, so it's definitely not an impossible target.
    68AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:10
    Re: #48
When you consider Hollow Knight has sold over 15 million copies…
it's hard not to feel weird that the imitator has more buyers than the originator. 🤔
    69AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:12
    Re: #68
Given the price difference, it's basically like Suika Game or Mecha Chameleon (cheap hit indie/mobile games) selling a ton.
    Why would that even matter?
    89AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:24
    Re: #68
Well, Hollow Knight's list price was around 1,500 yen, and it eventually got sale-priced down to about 400 yen.
Put another way, if it took that much brand recognition and constant sales to reach 15 million, that probably just shows Metroidvania is still a niche genre overall.
    49AnonymousSep 12, 2026 09:49

Metroidvania blowing up in the indie scene while the Metroid series itself was dormant for years was probably an unexpected stroke of luck for Nintendo.
Thanks to that, it's treated like "THE Metroid" now.
Though that status seems to apply only to the 2D games — Prime's value looks like it's dropped in comparison.
    72AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:13
Kirby, the casual-friendly series, sells better in 3D,
while Metroid, the hardcore fan series, does better flipped back to 2D.
    77AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:16
    Re: #72
Hardcore fans will buy any genre, but casual players only go for specific genres they like.
Leaning into an open-world style to match that audience seems like a smart move.
    88AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:23
    Re: #72
Honestly, indie games have gotten a lot more accessible lately with difficulty options and such, so casual players are buying those instead — paying full price for a 2D Kirby is basically only something diehard fans do anymore.
Planet Robobot barely sold at all, after all.
    75AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:16
    Re: #69
The price difference isn't as big as people make it out to be.
This is a boxed release using cartridges,
so that price also covers retailer margins and shipping costs.
    86AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:22
The scattered release schedule is probably part of why a solid fanbase never formed.
Wouldn't mind a port of Super Metroid while they're at it.

    Re: #86
IPs born on the Famicom Disk System tend to struggle carrying old fans forward and picking up new ones with each sequel.
It also hurt that Metroid was basically dormant during the N64 era, right when Nintendo's hardware audience was turning over.
Prime revived things in the GameCube era, but the 2D side went quiet for way too long after the DS games.

Samus fused with a Metroid in the last game and was giving off serious "enemy of the galaxy" vibes — is she starting from square one, powers stripped away, yet again?
    102AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:32
    Re: #99
She can actually use that power in this game, and even though she loses her abilities every time, what she gets back keeps getting stronger — so there's steady power creep going on lol.

    Re: #99
A Metroid game can't even start unless she loses her powers first.
Also, going by how the last game ended, didn't she get at least some control over the Metroid power by then?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The discussion kicked off with a report that the trailer for Nintendo’s new game “Metroid Ravenas” had reached 2.77 million views, surpassing the view count of its 2021 predecessor, “Metroid Dread.” Dread holds the series’ best sales record at over 3 million copies, and the fact that it arrived after the indie “Metroidvania” genre itself had already taken off became a key point of debate in the thread. Opinions split especially over how to compare Hollow Knight’s worldwide total of over 15 million copies against Dread’s sales, with an ongoing back-and-forth about differences in list price and distribution (physical distribution costs, sale frequency). One point readers can easily misread is that trailer view counts don’t necessarily track with actual sales — the thread itself pointed out the gap between “Yo-kai Watch 2″‘s high view count and its real-world sales scale. It’s also worth noting, for anyone following the series as a whole, that the “Metroid Prime” line has seen delayed follow-ups, prompting skepticism in the thread about the pace of future sequels.

  • New Romancing SaGa 3 Title: Official Broadcast Reveals Commander Mode Axed, Other Big Changes

An official broadcast covering the new Romancing SaGa 3 title revealed several system changes: restrictions on which characters can’t be recruited or which events won’t trigger depending on your chosen protagonist are being removed, Commander Mode is being scrapped, and Combination Arts and Formation Techniques will now trigger for individual characters. On 5ch, threads buzzed with opinions on how the game follows the direction set by the previous title, Revenge of the Seventh Planet, mixed reactions to the character designs, and thoughts on where the series goes from here.

    *Remaster version

After defeating Algernon, talking to him brings up the options "Give me the reward," "Let me punch you once," and "Never mind."

    Give me the reward
It makes you look like you're only in it for the money, but he pays out 10,000 aurum — one of the best single rewards in all of Romancing SaGa 3. However, his line afterward is locked to a smug "I'm the mayor now. Heh."

    Let me punch you once
He really doesn't want to get hit — he screams and flees his house — but if you walk back in, he's nonchalantly back in his usual spot. On this route his dialogue reverts to match the original version, and afterward you can no longer threaten him or demand a reward.

    Never mind
Nothing changes, and here too you can't make any further demands afterward.

    99AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:50
    Re: #94
As for the full story, one particular protagonist is tied to the core of the plot, so playing as them gives you the deepest understanding. You can follow it well enough with the others too, though. Beyond that, it's mostly just that each protagonist gets a different epilogue.
    107AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:53
    Re: #94
Honestly, outside of the general setting, the story itself wasn't all that clear in the original either

    Background and Points of Debate

Romancing SaGa 3 was the third entry in the series, originally released in 1995 for the Super Famicom; a remaster followed in 2019, and in 2024 a remake of SaGa 2 arrived as Revenge of the Seventh Planet. This new title continues in that lineage, and where opinions in the thread split was over whether changes like Combination Arts now triggering per-character, Counter (Mikiri) being capped at four slots, and Commander Mode being scrapped push the series further down the mass-market simplification path that Revenge of the Seventh Planet took. The original was defined by its multiple-protagonist structure, where the characters you could recruit and the events that triggered varied depending on your choice of hero — meaning multiple playthroughs were effectively needed to see the full story. This new title, however, signals a policy of removing that very restriction, drawing attention as a change that cuts into one of the series’ core pillars.

  • Yui Murata: “Otoki-chan’s Bangs and Singing Gave Me Chills” — Sense of Crisis After ‘Shakunetsu’ Rehearsal

On Tsubaki Bunshogumi’s radio segment “Wota Mail,” Yui Murata sparked buzz on 5ch’s Hello! Project board by admitting that during rehearsals for “Shakunetsu,” seeing Otoki Nishimura’s singing and newly grown-out bangs up close for the first time left her blurting out “this is insane” (yabai, used here approvingly) — a genuine sense of crisis. Co-stars Tanimoto and Doi also chimed in, agreeing that Otoki has leveled up. While most thread comments welcomed Otoki’s growth, the conversation broadened into a debate over generational change across Tsubaki as a whole — “so who rises next?” — with an ongoing back-and-forth comparing the singing and dancing skills of younger members like Murata and Taguchi.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Wota Mail” is a segment on Tsubaki Bunshogumi’s own radio show where members read out fan reactions, and “Shakunetsu” is known as a demanding track for both dance and vocals. The thread started from Yui Murata’s comment that she was struck by Otoki Nishimura’s singing and grown-out bangs (a change in her look) while rehearsing the song, and expanded from praise for Otoki personally into a broader debate about generational change across Tsubaki, as well as comparisons of members’ singing and dancing skills. Opinion split most sharply over “who will become the core of the next generation” — with Murata and Taguchi both floated as potential successors to Maopin (Akiyama) — while dissatisfaction with some current top members also surfaced. Readers should note that any “scandals” or assessments of specific members’ popularity and skill mentioned in the replies are strictly fan speculation and rumor, not confirmed facts.

  • Sandaime JSB to Disband in 2029: Bunshun Report Splits Opinion on 5ch

Weekly Bunshun has reported that Sandaime J Soul Brothers will disband in 2029. While their anniversary tour is reportedly doing well, news that their “X-Day” is approaching split opinion on 5ch. Some argued their draw has simply cooled off years past their peak, others tied it to reports of member Tosaka Hiroomi’s marriage, and still others dredged up the old “100-million-yen scandal” surrounding the Japan Record Award — with the conversation eventually spiraling into a debate over the standing of their talent agency, LDH, itself.

Watching their solo work, they clearly can sing while dancing.
It ended up that way out of deference to Johnny's — HIRO reportedly went to pay his respects to Mary Kitagawa (Johnny's then-VP) when putting EXILE together.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The “100-million-yen Record Award scandal” that kept resurfacing in the thread refers to a real 2017 incident in which Kanou Gendai, then the top official of the Japan Record Award, publicly accused Suo Ikuo — head of major talent agency Burning Production — of treating the award as his personal property, naming him directly. The fact that non-Johnny’s boy groups like Sandaime JSB and EXILE repeatedly won awards and appeared at the Record Award and Kohaku Uta Gassen throughout the 2010s has been a recurring point of contention ever since that accusation, and this thread revisited it by comparing it with similar cases involving other agencies, such as Hello! Project. Opinion split, however, over where LDH itself stands: some argued the agency benefited from the decline of the old Johnny’s empire, while others countered that LDH — a joint venture between Burning Production and Ken-On — was already privileged from the start and is actually losing out as Johnny’s collapses. Note that the reported “2029 disbandment” comes from Weekly Bunshun’s reporting, not an official announcement from the agency or the members themselves, and is treated as a separate matter from the concurrent reports of Tosaka Hiroomi’s marriage.

  • Rapidus CEO Unveils Plan to Build Semiconductor Factory on the Moon — 5ch: ‘Idiotic, Won’t Happen Even in 50 Years’

In a speech in the United States, Rapidus CEO Atsuyoshi Koike revealed a plan to build a semiconductor factory on the moon by around 2040. Citing the presence of water resources on the moon, he reportedly said, “This isn’t a joke — it’s a serious plan.” The remark split opinion on 5ch’s science news board. Many dismissed it outright over transport costs and the scarcity of water, saying things like “Get your feet on the ground before fantasizing,” while others defended the idea with detailed technical explanations of how the moon’s low gravity and vacuum environment could benefit semiconductor manufacturing — making for a debate that couldn’t be reduced to simple pros and cons.

Rapidus Eyes Semiconductors on the Moon — CEO “Serious” About Building a Factory

[New York, Kyodo] Atsuyoshi Koike, CEO of Rapidus, which aims to bring next-generation semiconductor production to Japan, revealed in a speech in the United States on the 10th that the company has a plan to build a semiconductor factory on the moon by around 2040.

Koike cited the presence of water resources on the moon needed for semiconductor manufacturing, saying, “This isn’t a joke — it’s a serious plan.”

    Idiot.
If people live there and build factories, the moon will get heavier, which will make it drift closer to Earth and orbit faster.
Tides will hit multiple times, throwing animals' internal clocks into chaos.
Earth will also stretch and contract more under the moon's pull, raising the planet's internal temperature.
That would trigger volcanic activity on a scale not seen since prehistoric times, with catastrophic eruptions everywhere.
Those eruptions would spew massive amounts of CO2 and methane, accelerating global warming.
Japan's average temperature would top 35°C even in the dead of winter, and over 50°C in summer.

There's no benefit to making something as lightweight as semiconductors on the moon of all places. And water's precious up there too. If that's the level of thinking involved, I'm honestly pretty worried about Rapidus. The moon's role should just be as a launch base.

    19AnonymousSep 12, 2026 02:34
What's the actual point of doing this on the moon specifically?
Is it purely about water resources?
Or is it about solar power, gravity effects, that kind of thing?
Honestly, even factoring all that in, when you think about the capital investment and the cost of shipping materials and products back and forth, it doesn't seem realistic.

A small-scale experiment might be one thing,
but doing it commercially — no matter how seriously they've thought it through — just doesn't feel realistic.

Also, is it even settled that companies are allowed to just use lunar land and resources however they want?
I mean in terms of ownership rights and all that.

    21AnonymousSep 12, 2026 04:24
    Semiconductors need ultra-pure water.

Water on the moon is extremely precious.

Can they even set up a closed water-recycling loop using that precious lunar water?

At the very least, if humans go there, the water will get used up by the humans.
Unless physical AI handles the entire process on its own, including the water recycling.
    22AnonymousSep 12, 2026 05:08
    Lunar water isn't actually scarce.
It's accumulated over hundreds of millions of years from water that migrated from Earth.
At the poles there's plenty in ice form, and if you dig into the ground you find it as hydrated minerals in rock.

There are three reasons to build a semiconductor fab on the moon:
    • Lower gravity lets crystals form more cleanly, boosting yield — good for miniaturization.
    • Since the outside is already a vacuum, clean-room (vacuum) costs are cheap.
    • Producing at the lunar poles gives access to extreme cryogenic conditions at low cost, opening the door to cooling even further than cryogenic etching (-60°C).

That said, 2040 is way too ambitious a target — pulling it off would need literally all of Elon Musk's personal fortune lol.
    23AnonymousSep 12, 2026 05:45
Finally, a competent executive shows up.

Meanwhile their rivals are chasing far more advanced things.

CRT monitors would work fine too. If you're using them in a vacuum, you wouldn't even need the glass casing.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Rapidus is a next-generation semiconductor manufacturer established in 2022 under government leadership, and it has received massive public funding while aiming for mass production of 2nm-class chips. Within the thread, some posters cited a specific figure — “2.9 trillion yen cumulative” — to question the scale of the funding, though it’s worth noting this came from an individual poster’s own research and hasn’t been independently verified. The debate mainly split along two lines. One was the technical question of whether building on the moon actually makes sense: while many voiced skepticism over transport costs and the scarcity of water, others pushed back with specific technical points about how low gravity could improve crystal yield and how vacuum and extreme-cold conditions could be obtained at no extra cost — a nuance that’s easy to miss if you don’t know the technical background, making the exchange look like mere mockery. The other point of contention was CEO Koike’s own management track record, with skeptics invoking his past business history (a massive loss and subsequent spinoff at Western Digital). It’s also worth noting that “around 2040” is only a target at the conceptual stage, not a confirmed plan — a nuance easy to miss if you only glance at the headline.

Alright, good luck — you're the underdog here!

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Music programs like “CDTV” often feature multiple idol groups performing back-to-back, giving them a chance to showcase their performances directly to fan bases they wouldn’t normally reach. NiziU and FRUITS ZIPPER, the groups cited for comparison in the thread, are acts that have rapidly built name recognition over the past few years, drawing a different kind of fan base than Hello! Project groups with much longer histories. The thread split over whether positive reactions from other fandoms should be read as genuine new-fan acquisition or dismissed as a passing fad — some praised Juice=Juice’s ability on its own merits, while a persistent, more cynical view held that fans who just jumped on the trend would leave just as quickly. It’s worth noting that the posts don’t specify exactly which broadcasts are being discussed or what criteria are being used to rank groups as “above” or “below” one another — this remains, ultimately, just fan impressions and speculation.

  • Elon Musk Mocks Ex-Anthropic Researcher Who Warned of AI-Driven Human Extinction

When a former Anthropic researcher sounded the alarm about the existential risk AI poses to humanity, Elon Musk drew attention by mocking the claim as baseless conspiracy-mongering or self-promotion — even as other AI researchers have voiced similar concerns. On 5ch, the discussion spread to include wry takes on Musk’s own history (he was famously pushed out of OpenAI before founding xAI), the technical safety debate over whether AI should output its reasoning in a human-readable format, and broader worries about the US-China AI race and autonomous weapons.

Far more people are being kept alive by AI than are being killed by it. And for what it's worth, without AI, the number of people killed by other humans would be off the charts.
    13AnonymousSep 12, 2026 00:30
Even if one person is a messiah-tier, world-changing genius, it still takes a massive amount of time for their wisdom to actually spread and take effect. Sure, we've got the internet, but ordinary people don't have the tools or the instinct to find real insight in that ocean of information. Taking the next step is impossible without AI's help. Worried about dependency? There's no living human alive who isn't dependent on something.

Re: #16 Elon isn't really focused on Grok — he's been running a landlord business leasing capacity to Anthropic and Google, and has had his eye on a SpaceX/xAI IPO for a while now. He leased out one of the two data centers — Colossus I and II — that he built for Grok, entirely to Anthropic. It's packed with 220,000 Nvidia GPUs. And this happened months ago already.

Re: #1 We've hit the point where scaling up further just plateaus in performance, and the competition shifts to cost-efficiency, tool-use ability, and task turnaround time — the same road PCs went down before.
    18AnonymousSep 12, 2026 01:43
Re: #17 What are you talking about? Scaling up is just one direction. Smaller models distilled from those big ones don't lose much performance. So building huge models is really just one step in the process of eventually making a usable tool, from most ordinary users' perspective. But that direction is still necessary for specialist researchers, and things keep branching off in all sorts of ways. Why did the PC stop being just "the PC" and turn into smartphones, the cloud, and quantum computing? The PC itself was only ever one direction computing took.
    20AnonymousSep 12, 2026 01:47
I've thought this for a while, but it's kind of odd that Elon Musk's comments count as 'science news.' It'd be different if he'd actually built or discovered something himself.
    21AnonymousSep 12, 2026 01:47
And after taking SpaceX public, next up is acquiring Cursor. He's only interested in business customers — regular users only get whatever scraps are left at that level.
    22AnonymousSep 12, 2026 01:52
Cursor used to be tied at the hip to OpenAI, but after Codex came out and Sam Altman went and hired Peter from OpenClaw too, Cursor got brushed aside — so they ended up talking with business-focused Elon instead. Elon had been desperately envious of Anthropic's AI agent, and when Anthropic got into a fight with Trump, he saw his chance and moved to absorb them. Anthropic is exactly the kind of target rich investors everywhere are circling right now. If Trump and Bessent keep bashing Anthropic to tank its valuation, then it IPOs and the stock gets pushed down, someone will just take it over — like what happened with Intel.
    23AnonymousSep 12, 2026 02:04
There's actually some context behind this. Other AI models output their intermediate reasoning in a human-readable format for safety, but OpenAI's newest model dropped that and switched to a format humans can't read. The reasoning seems to be that since it's mimicking human thought, not verbalizing every step of 'thinking' boosts benchmark scores — so this is criticizing that as basically cheating: juicing some benchmark numbers while ignoring safety. Elon Musk probably doesn't get any of that. Well, he's pretty hopeless on AI in general — he gave up his OpenAI stake before it broke out big.

    28AnonymousSep 12, 2026 03:52
Re: #26 How can you even come up with that? Japan isn't remotely close to even having that conversation — we're way, way, way behind. You can only say that because you don't realize how far behind we are, right? Saying you can 'picture' that future just shows you don't understand reality.

    33AnonymousSep 12, 2026 08:54
Within a few years AI gets built into autonomous weapons, and a few years after that there's a real chance — pretty high odds within 10 years — that AI starts attacking enemy countries on its own. That's terrifying. Human extinction is starting to feel less like fiction. People used to argue about whether AI would 'become conscious,' but it's already acting on its own regardless of consciousness. Even sci-fi didn't call this one.
    36AnonymousSep 12, 2026 09:25
Kokuson's argument: it'll become a superhuman system that can hack anything, revolutionize any field overnight, and seize real-world power and resources. It'd be terrifying if it turned into what Re: #33 describes, but AI processing eats a huge amount of electricity, so it's unclear whether AI could generate its own power — it'll hit a power-supply wall. If AI really can 'revolutionize any field overnight,' though, it could just seize humanity's electricity supply instead. Then we'd be back to pre-Edo-era living.
    34AnonymousSep 12, 2026 09:04

There won't be a Terminator-style world. The real problem is that AI mass-produces plausible-sounding lies that people just believe at face value — massively widening the gap between smart people and everyone else.
    38AnonymousSep 12, 2026 09:58
Elon doesn't deny AI risk itself, but his real stance is that he's more afraid of China seizing AI dominance — so anything that sounds like it'd slow down AI research is a non-starter for him.

Re: #36 If it can generate enough power on its own, then it wouldn't need to take it from humanity, would it?

Background and key points of this discussion

The debate over AI’s existential risk to humanity is one that several AI researchers, Anthropic among them, have repeatedly raised in recent years, and this time Musk was reacting to comments from one such former Anthropic researcher. What split opinion in the thread wasn’t so much whether the warning itself was true, but “who’s saying it” — many pointed to Musk’s own history as an OpenAI co-founder who was later pushed out, and to reports that xAI leases data-center capacity to Anthropic, casting doubt on the consistency of his position. At the same time, some replies touched on a genuine technical safety distinction — whether an AI’s reasoning process is output in a human-readable format — a sign that this isn’t purely an emotional clash but also reflects real differences in development philosophy, something the article text alone doesn’t make obvious.

Wamuu’s 164cm sits about 7cm below that average. On the 5ch thread, his claim of being at a disadvantage in romance because of his height drew a mix of responses — some countering that “it all comes down to income or personality,” others dismissing it as “just not trying hard enough,” and others simply mocking his height — with no real consensus emerging. At the same time, several posters shared personal stories suggesting that nutrition and sleep during one’s growing years, not just genetics, can affect final height, showing that the roots of this kind of complex aren’t so simple. It’s also worth noting that the original article reflects Wamuu’s personal experience alone, and isn’t statistical evidence of broader dating-market trends for short men.

He went independent from Konami in the first place, so why rely on a sponsor at all?
If they funded it themselves, it wouldn't matter what they made or how long it took.
Did Death Stranding just not make much money?

    Re: #32
Whether it's film or games, there are all kinds of independent studios.
Some are fully self-funded on a small scale, others partner with major companies project by project to raise huge budgets.
    38AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:24
You just can't let creators do whatever they want.
They'll blow through money like water and blow past every deadline.

    No doubt about that.
Phil failed for the same reason too.
Ended up getting axed as a result.

They say creators are amateurs when it comes to business.
That's why manga artists have editors.

The people who bashed Konami are obviously bashing Sony too, right?
Surely they're not defending Sony while bashing Director Kojima now?

    Re: #46
They're Kojima fanboys, right? Of course they're bashing Sony.
    71AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:30
Sony has plenty it could be criticized for too, but
Kojima went independent when realistically only small-scale development should've been possible,
and Sony let him keep a 200-employee company running for ten years.
Sony's investment was probably well beyond a few billion yen — you could call it an exceptionally generous deal.

There's no way a bank would lend money to someone with zero track record as a business manager, so
it must be thanks to Sony.

Setting track record aside, he had no fame to speak of either…

    — You were hunting for office space, gathering staff, and choosing a game engine all at the same time, right?

Kojima: Even when I went to the bank, they wouldn't lend me money. They said, 'We understand you're famous, Mr. Kojima, but you have no track record.' That's the kind of country Japan is. But then, an executive at the biggest bank turned out to be a huge fan of mine, and he approved the loan.

This is a director who's an avid reader and film buff, who knows exactly how much wording matters — so he clearly chose those words with the impact in mind.
He's obviously sending his funnels out (a Gundam term for remote attack drones, used here to mean sending his fans out to attack on his behalf).
This was not an amicable split.

Basically, Kojikan (a fan nickname for Director Kojima) just gave the fans the order to 'commence firing!' 😁

The reason Death Stranding 2 didn't sell despite being such high quality and more fun than the first is
definitely because the people who played the first one, found it boring, and dropped it just didn't buy the sequel.
The first game's sales were basically riding entirely on the Metal Gear Solid brand's track record,
and that's the part they failed to read.
    182AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:49
    Re: #159
Doesn't that kind of thing usually build steady sales through word of mouth?

    Re: #159
Casting Norman Reedus got people talking, but you can tell how the content landed just by looking at the completion rate.
There's no way a sequel that keeps Norman on board was going to sell.
At the very least, they should've changed the protagonist to make it easier for new players to jump in.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Hideo Kojima went independent from Konami in 2015 and founded Kojima Productions, and Sony has since served as the studio’s exclusive publisher, backing it financially and helping sustain a roughly 200-person studio for nearly a decade. Where the thread’s opinions split was over whether responsibility for the contract termination lies with Sony or with Kojima — the claim that ‘a buyout was offered’ cites no source and remains unconfirmed. The reported sales slump for Death Stranding and the budget overruns and delays on ‘PHYSINT’ come from Bloomberg’s reporting, and no official explanation from Kojima’s side has been confirmed as of this article. The topic can also be read as one example of the broader power dynamic between independent creators and major publishers that’s common across the games industry.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware & Industry (Geha)) thread “[Sad news] Hideo Kojima starts getting bashed on X wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.”

  • Juice=Juice’s “bad singer” Sakura Ishiyama joins FRUITS ZIPPER for a song — turns out she can actually sing

Sakura Ishiyama of Juice=Juice is a member who often gets harsh reviews for her singing, but when she joined in on a FRUITS ZIPPER song, she showed off vocal power so strong that fans said she was a genuinely “good singer” — sparking discussion on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. Many in the thread said things like “I never thought Ishiyama was bad” and “that vocal power feels amazing,” but harsher voices remained too, criticizing her pitch and calling her belting “unpleasant,” so opinion was split. Some also theorized, based on differences in how easy the songs are to sing at karaoke, that Juice=Juice’s own material is simply more vocally demanding.

    Wait, Ishiyama can actually sing

    16AnonymousSep 12, 2026 08:16
You can tell when you sing karaoke — Juice=Juice's songs are just hard to sing in general, while Kawaii Lab (FRUITS ZIPPER)'s songs are easy, so even someone like Ishiyama can nail them without breaking a sweat and show her real ability
    29AnonymousSep 12, 2026 08:21
Best physical ability in all of Hello! Project
That's why her vocal power is insane too

    58AnonymousSep 12, 2026 09:37
The vocal power's great, but come on, at least hit the right pitch
    77AnonymousSep 12, 2026 09:41
Reminder: pitch doesn't need to be perfect
A live show that sounds like karaoke is boring

Background and key points of this discussion

Juice=Juice and FRUITS ZIPPER are both part of Hello! Project, but their songs have very different styles. One theory raised in the thread was that “Juice=Juice’s songs are just hard to sing, while Kawaii Lab’s (FRUITS ZIPPER’s) songs are easy to sing” — suggesting that Ishiyama’s evaluation shifts depending on the setting because of a real gap in vocal difficulty between the two groups’ material. It’s worth noting that the “bad singer” label itself isn’t an official assessment, just a tag that stuck on 5ch. The fact that praise for her vocal power and criticism of her shaky pitch coexist reflects a singing style built more around raw power and intensity than fine technique — making it a topic where opinions split depending on what listeners use as their standard for “good singing.”
