The story

An official broadcast covering the new Romancing SaGa 3 title revealed several system changes: restrictions on which characters can’t be recruited or which events won’t trigger depending on your chosen protagonist are being removed, Commander Mode is being scrapped, and Combination Arts and Formation Techniques will now trigger for individual characters. On 5ch, threads buzzed with opinions on how the game follows the direction set by the previous title, Revenge of the Seventh Planet, mixed reactions to the character designs, and thoughts on where the series goes from here.

Katarina can now be recruited even if you start with a different protagonist
Even in Sarah's playthrough, she won't leave the party before the final boss fight
Commander Mode is being removed, and as a result Combination Arts and Formation Techniques will now trigger for individual characters

Only old geezers are gonna buy this, who even cares

If you don't care, what's driving you to clear two whole hurdles — opening the thread AND posting in it?

I just wanted to turn the mayor into an ex-mayor, though

Re: #12
*Remaster version

After defeating Algernon, talking to him brings up the options "Give me the reward," "Let me punch you once," and "Never mind."

Give me the reward
It makes you look like you're only in it for the money, but he pays out 10,000 aurum — one of the best single rewards in all of Romancing SaGa 3. However, his line afterward is locked to a smug "I'm the mayor now. Heh."

Let me punch you once
He really doesn't want to get hit — he screams and flees his house — but if you walk back in, he's nonchalantly back in his usual spot. On this route his dialogue reverts to match the original version, and afterward you can no longer threaten him or demand a reward.

Never mind
Nothing changes, and here too you can't make any further demands afterward.

Speaking of Tatiana, apparently you'll be able to remove her signature gear too — like the Teddy Bear or the Flower Scarf. Though I do wonder, can you actually take off the Shrimp Claws or the Snowman's Eternal Ice Crystal?

Re: #15
Erasing that much of her character feels a bit much though
31AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:04
You can freely swap party members around at save points now, right?
32AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:06
Re: #31
Oh right, that too. Picturing a character getting suddenly summoned and rushing over is pretty surreal when you think about it
36AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:09
Seriously, do something about how creepy the character art is. Same goes for the SaGa 2 remake — it's so gross I don't even want to look at it. Don't taint people's memories like this.

Re: #36
I wouldn't call it creepy, but I do think the designs look cheap
78AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:40
Re: #36
Fair, but then again, would the Minstrel Song designs really have been the right call either? Not really…
46AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:14
"No thanks."
"Tch!!"
Are we not gonna get to hear this line anymore?
48AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:15
Re: #46
The first time she says "No thanks," but if you try to remove it again, she'll apparently let you take it off
49AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:17
Sounds like the protagonist-select screen now comes after the Loanne Uprising event at the start, which has become a shared event for everyone. Wonder if they'll let us skip it from the second playthrough onward
54AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:21
Re: #49
Given how Revenge of the Seventh Planet handled it, probably not skippable
51AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:17
Let us use multiple Earth spells without needing a glitch to do it, please ♥
57AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:23
Writing this made me remember more stuff — apparently Mastery (Gokui-ka) is also changing from a random chance to being based on number of uses.

Re: #51
Since Combination Arts now trigger for individuals, it'll probably work like in Revenge of the Seventh Planet, where you can use any element except its directly opposing one
53AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:20
If this sells well and Kawazu drops his recent direction to make a real Romancing SaGa 4, I honestly wouldn't ask for anything else

Re: #53
He already hit mandatory retirement before Emerald Beyond even released, so he's probably not getting deeply involved anymore
58AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:23
I hope Counter (Mikiri) gets its own slot separate from the regular skill list. Haven't played Revenge of the Seventh Planet so I don't know — how was it handled there?
60AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:25
Re: #58
It does get its own slot, but Counter (Mikiri) is capped at 4
62AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:26
SaGa Scarlet Grace and SaGa Emerald Beyond really didn't make much noise, huh. Is an Unlimited SaGa remaster next? Or maybe SaGa Frontier and SaGa Frontier 2 remakes?
72AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:33
Re: #62
Not sure if it'll be a remaster, but Kawazu's been saying for ages now that he wants to bring back Unlimited SaGa
73AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:33
Re: #62
Scarlet Grace actually sold well for a Vita title. The real disaster was the Game Boy remake that flopped on DS
67AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:32
This is basically Revenge of the Seventh Planet with a SaGa 3 skin slapped on. Feels stale.
75AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:37
Re: #67
Well, Revenge of the Seventh Planet itself already took the original Romancing SaGa 2 and turned it into a super mainstream RPG where you just beat up enemies to get stronger and push the story forward — and that worked. So it's only natural the company figures 'let's just do that again.'
76AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:38
Wonder if Leonid joins the party no matter which protagonist you pick
79AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:40
Re: #76
They said they're removing the restrictions where certain characters can't join or certain events can't trigger depending on your protagonist — like Monica now being able to enter the Zweig Tournament, for example
83AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:41
Re: #76
Apparently those protagonist-dependent recruitment restrictions are being done away with
87AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:43
Can this even be played on PlayStation?
89AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:44
Re: #87
It's coming to every platform
90AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:45
Re: #87
Switch 1, Switch 2, PS5, Xbox, Steam — you can play it on any of them
91AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:45
As long as there's no 'hard mode' that's just enemies hitting harder for the sake of it, I'm fine with it
93AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:46
Re: #91
If anything, NOT having one would probably get more backlash
92AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:46
Heard trading's back, but what about 'Masucon'? (an abbreviation glimpsed in the trailer footage; exact meaning unclear)
95AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:46
Re: #92
It's already shown in the first reveal video
94AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:46
Never actually played the original, but do you need to clear it 8 times to get the full story? Is it Octopath Traveler-style, where no matter who you pick it just funnels into the same single storyline anyway?
99AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:50
Re: #94
As for the full story, one particular protagonist is tied to the core of the plot, so playing as them gives you the deepest understanding. You can follow it well enough with the others too, though. Beyond that, it's mostly just that each protagonist gets a different epilogue.

Re: #94
Honestly, outside of the general setting, the story itself wasn't all that clear in the original either

Background and Points of Debate

Romancing SaGa 3 was the third entry in the series, originally released in 1995 for the Super Famicom; a remaster followed in 2019, and in 2024 a remake of SaGa 2 arrived as Revenge of the Seventh Planet. This new title continues in that lineage, and where opinions in the thread split was over whether changes like Combination Arts now triggering per-character, Counter (Mikiri) being capped at four slots, and Commander Mode being scrapped push the series further down the mass-market simplification path that Revenge of the Seventh Planet took. The original was defined by its multiple-protagonist structure, where the characters you could recruit and the events that triggered varied depending on your choice of hero — meaning multiple playthroughs were effectively needed to see the full story. This new title, however, signals a policy of removing that very restriction, drawing attention as a change that cuts into one of the series’ core pillars.
