  • Speed skater Miho Takagi joins Wacoal as external researcher — 5ch: ‘Huh, turns out they went way back’

Miho Takagi (32), the women’s speed skating Olympic gold medalist who received the National Honor Award last month, has been announced as an external researcher — a “Human Performance Fellow” — at Wacoal’s Human Science Research and Development Center, effective September 1. Takagi’s ties to Wacoal date back to her high school days, and since 2019 she’s held a partnership contract for the conditioning wear brand “CW-X,” making for a six-and-a-half-year relationship. On 5ch, opinions were split: some saw sense in putting her competitive experience to use in product development, while others were skeptical, asking “Isn’t this just a promotional gig?” and “Does it actually relate to her sport?”

    9/11 (Fri) 14:41

Major lingerie maker Wacoal announced on the 10th that Miho Takagi (32), the women’s speed skating Olympic gold medalist who received the National Honor Award last month, was appointed on the 1st as an external researcher — a “Human Performance Fellow” — at the company’s Human Science Research and Development Center. Going forward, the perspective and physical sense Takagi honed through competition will be put to use in research activities and product development. Wacoal also said it plans to share details of her activities through its own media channels.

Wacoal’s relationship with Takagi began back in her high school days, and in 2019 she signed a partnership contract for the conditioning wear brand “CW-X,” which she herself uses. Wacoal explained, “Since [2019], we’ve built our relationship over roughly six and a half years through product-development interviews and information sharing.” According to Wacoal, Takagi has also shown interest in topics like conditioning and healthy life expectancy.

Does this even have anything to do with speed skating?
Or is it just a promotional hire?

    It's both, really.
Sports apparel actually does produce gear that ends up restricting your movement, so there's real value in having someone who's actually competed serve as the guinea pig for testing it.

Re: #79 More than being a TV personality or a politician, this probably suits her personality better.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The external researcher, or “Fellow,” title isn’t a full-time hire — it’s a visiting-style position that puts the physical sense and know-how gained through competition to use in product development, and notably isn’t a full-time job. Takagi’s relationship with Wacoal dates back to her high school days, and her partnership contract for the conditioning wear brand “CW-X” has continued since 2019, so this appointment isn’t a sudden ad tie-in but an extension of roughly six and a half years of accumulated ties. On the thread, opinions split between those who, citing this track record, called it “a sensible choice,” and skeptics who said things like “Isn’t this just a promotional role?” or “Does it really relate to her sport?” It’s also worth noting, since it’s easily misread, that “external researcher” is a part-time title — not a sign of retirement or stepping away from competition — and Takagi will hold the role alongside her active career.

  • Kojima’s “PHYSINT” Drops PlayStation Over Budget Overruns, Heads to Xbox — Bloomberg Reports

Bloomberg reports that Sony has pulled out of Hideo Kojima’s new project “PHYSINT,” citing budget overruns and missed deadlines, with development now moving to Xbox. The report also states that both Death Stranding 1 and 2 fell short of the revenue targets Sony had projected. On 5ch’s hardware/industry board, speculation swirled around the contract terms and Kojima Productions’ financial standing, with the discussion even circling back to question the original narrative of “was Death Stranding really a smash hit?”

I think what happened is Saros couldn't pay back the funding Sony had invested and ended up selling the whole company to Sony.
Kojima Productions, on the other hand, is profitable enough that they could buy the IP back from Sony—so I don't think this counts as a failure.
If Death Stranding was put together solidly and sold 2 million copies, that's a fine outcome.

    Re: #149
The contract itself says 2030 or later—so what deadline did they even "blow through"?

Background and key points of this discussion

PHYSINT is a joint project between Kojima Productions and Sony announced in 2022, with a release window that was pegged at “around 2030” from the start. That makes it more reasonable to read the report’s “missed deadline” not as the actual release date, but as an internal development milestone—such as submitting an alpha build. As for Death Stranding’s actual sales figures, commenters in the thread pointed out that the “20 million” number likely includes free giveaways, and it’s unclear from the report alone how the real sales figures compare to Sony’s investment recoupment line. The capital relationship between Kojima Productions and Sony dates back to a 2022 investment, so if this report is accurate, it would be an unusual case of a split from a major publisher. Opinions in the thread were divided over the contract terms and who’s really at fault—but it’s worth noting that all of it remains speculation without any primary sourcing.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “Bloomberg: “Death Stranding 1 and 2 missed targets, PHYSINT over budget”.”

  • Surprisingly Many People Are Uncomfortable With Secondhand Goods — 5ch: “I Just Can’t Deal With Something Someone Else Already Touched”

Flea-market apps and reuse shops have made buying secondhand completely normal — yet a wave of social media posts revealed that far more people than expected simply can’t stand the idea of used goods. A news article on the topic sparked a big reaction on 5ch, where users debated exactly where the line falls: opened figures, used PCs, secondhand clothes, even used underwear. Some objections were purely about hygiene (“it’s just gross”), others purely practical (“it’s cheap, so used is plenty”), and opinion split cleanly down the middle.

Even now that flea-market apps and reuse shops are completely mainstream, it seems a surprising number of people still say they’re “just not okay” with secondhand books, clothes, appliances, and the like.

◼ Even if it looks spotless…

On social media, comments about using secondhand goods include things like “Someone’s hands were all over this, right? Using that every day is a bit much” and “Even if it’s been cleaned, there’s just no way with clothes.”

Background and key points of this discussion

The secondhand market has expanded rapidly thanks to flea-market apps, but what stood out in this discussion wasn’t price — it was psychological resistance. The thread split between people prioritizing a gut-level aversion to “used” itself, and people prioritizing price and practicality. Some pointed to hidden deterioration that’s invisible on the surface, like hydrolyzed figures or deteriorating old books, while others noted that even brand-new items — houses, cars — lose value the instant they’re purchased, meaning “secondhand or not” and “degradation/asset value” aren’t always the same axis. Several posts also made the point that while cleaning or disinfecting can lower the actual hygiene risk, it doesn’t necessarily erase the psychological discomfort itself.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Newsplus) thread “Turns out there are a lot of them… people who “can’t buy secondhand”: SNS reactions include “I can’t deal with something someone else already touched” and “seems like you’d lose out if it breaks”.”

It’s been announced that Hello! Project’s Juice=Juice will grace the cover of the special edition of idol magazine ‘S Cawaii!’s November 2026 issue. Ariyasu Ichika will serve as center, and reactions poured in on 5ch’s Hello! Project board over the casting choice. While some praised the “casting” for making it easier to balance the members’ heights with Ariyasu at center, other posts voiced frustration over the placement of members like Ishiyama and Irie, sparking a range of opinions about the magazine’s lineup.

    Background and Talking Points

S Cawaii! is a fashion magazine aimed at teenage girls, and special editions featuring Hello! Project groups on the cover have repeatedly made waves before. Juice=Juice currently has a large lineup, so “who gets center” and “who ends up in the back row” of the magazine spread tends to be a major focus for fans. In this thread, the theory that placing Ariyasu Ichika at center made it easier to balance height differences and sub-unit groupings won a lot of support, while fans backing members pushed to the back row, like Ishiyama and Irie, voiced dissatisfaction with the placement. It’s worth noting these takes aren’t based on any stated intent from the shoot’s staff — they’re purely fan speculation.

  • Ghanaian Man on Dialysis Loses Final Appeal for Welfare Benefits — Supreme Court Chief Justice Dissents

A 36-year-old Ghanaian national living in Chiba City receives dialysis three times a week for chronic kidney failure, but his application for welfare benefits was rejected on the grounds of his foreign nationality. He sued, arguing the rejection was unlawful, but the Supreme Court dismissed his appeal on the 9th, finalizing the lower courts’ rulings that the rejection was lawful. The decision was a 3-to-1 majority among the four justices, with Presiding Justice Mamoru Miura alone dissenting, arguing that ‘the provision of the Public Assistance Act limiting recipients to Japanese nationals violates the Constitution’s guarantees of the right to life and equality under the law, and is therefore invalid.’ On 5channel, voices calling it ‘just common sense that foreigners can’t get welfare’ clashed with others saying ‘this is inhumane’ or ‘just deport him,’ while users also traded information about how the man came to Japan and how his residence status changed over time.

Ghanaian Man’s Bid for Welfare Amid Serious Illness Finally Rejected — Supreme Court Dismisses Appeal, Chief Justice Dissents: “Severely Inhumane”: Tokyo Shimbun Digital

    September 11, 2026, 19:03

Siaw Johnson Kwaku (36), a Ghanaian national living in Chiba City who receives dialysis for chronic kidney failure, sued after his welfare application was rejected on the grounds of his foreign nationality, arguing the rejection was unlawful. The Second Petty Bench of the Supreme Court (Presiding Justice Mamoru Miura) has decided to dismiss Johnson’s appeal, dated the 9th. This finalizes the lower courts’ rulings that the rejection was lawful.

He originally came on a student visa.
Came to Japan in 2015, got sick in 2019, and switched status then.
He's kind of a pitiable case, honestly.

Johnson came to Japan in 2015 on a student visa. While attending a Japanese language school in Tokyo, he worked part-time within the limits allowed under a student visa. After graduating, he quickly landed a job, had his status changed to one permitting employment, and worked full-time at a company.

However, in 2019 he developed chronic kidney failure and needed dialysis three times a week. He was let go from the company, and his status was switched to a "medical stay" visa for receiving treatment, which prohibits working.

    Re: #259
If you're a developed country, you should be able to look after that much!

Background and Key Points of This Topic

On paper, the Public Assistance Act applies to “citizens,” and Supreme Court precedent has long held that payments to foreign nationals aren’t a legal right but merely a de facto measure left to administrative discretion. This ruling follows that same framework, with the majority opinion reaffirming it. Presiding Justice Miura’s dissent, meanwhile, doesn’t overturn the outcome and carries no binding force, but it drew attention as unusual for using the strong phrase “severely inhumane.” Some posts in the thread mistakenly read “a dissent was issued” as meaning welfare had been granted, but in fact the rejection is final and the dissent remains a minority view. It’s also worth noting — as commenters corrected mid-thread — that the man originally came to Japan on a student visa and was working, only losing his income after falling ill post-arrival; this was not a case of entering the country to exploit the system.

  • Tesla Unveils Handle- and Pedal-less Driverless Taxi ‘Cybercab’ in Japan for First Time — Domestic Launch Date Still Unknown

Tesla has unveiled its purpose-built driverless taxi, the “Cybercab,” in Japan for the first time. The vehicle has no driver’s seat, steering wheel, or pedals, and has already begun operating in parts of Texas this month, though a timeline for Japanese service remains undecided. Thread reactions ranged widely — from safety concerns about how to stop the car in an emergency, to comments citing Waymo’s track record and arguing it’s “already safer than human drivers,” to skepticism about whether the technology has been proven on Japan’s narrow roads and in snowy conditions. Many also wondered whether fares would actually be cheaper, and voiced regulatory skepticism that Japan’s transport ministry would ever approve it.

    Re: #187
So tell me which country actually has approved it, then?

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The Cybercab is a fully driverless, purpose-built vehicle that began operating in parts of Austin, Texas in September 2026; the timing and areas for Japanese service remain undecided. In the debate over self-driving taxis, Waymo has logged over 3 billion km on public roads with a lower accident rate as its track record — though it’s easy to overlook that the numbers look very different depending on whether they’re compared against all drivers or against a narrower age bracket. Since operation in Japan hinges on new legislation and approval from the transport ministry, Tesla’s U.S. track record won’t necessarily speed up domestic rollout. The thread shows the claim that it’s “safer than humans” sitting alongside cautious voices noting that “its performance on Japan’s narrow roads and in snow remains unproven” — a reminder that how mature the technology is and how well it adapts to legal systems and local conditions are two separate questions.

  • GOTY Contenders Pile Up, GTA6’s Eligibility Sparks Debate — 5ch: “This Feels Off”

A thread predicting this year’s GOTY (Game of the Year) popped up on the Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. Among the contenders named were Pragmata, Resident Evil 9, Wolverine, and Banshi Senkou, but the real center of debate was whether Grand Theft Auto VI, releasing November 20, would even be eligible for this year’s The Game Awards. Since past eligibility cutoffs have clustered in mid-to-late November, some argued GTA6 could sneak in under the wire — while others pushed back on the idea of crowning a game whose reputation hasn’t even had time to settle right after release. Opinions were split.

Judges probably get review data well ahead of time, so timing likely isn't actually an issue on their end
But yeah, there's definitely a whiff of 'selling on hype without real confidence' to it

Background and key points of this discussion

The Game Awards (TGA) typically sets its eligibility cutoff for “games of that year” sometime in mid-to-late November. In post 92, a poster shared a decade’s worth of cutoff dates they say they got from an AI, pointing out that GTA6, releasing November 20, could well sneak into this year’s eligibility window. It’s worth noting, though, that this is information the poster got from a generative AI, not an official announcement. Several awards besides TGA also call themselves “GOTY,” but the thread proceeds on the assumption that “talking about GOTY = talking about TGA,” so TGA isn’t necessarily the only benchmark that matters. It’s also worth flagging that KOTY (Kuso Game of the Year, i.e. “Worst Game of the Year”), which comes up in the thread, is an unofficial award that originated on 5ch and has nothing to do with TGA. The thread ends without a resolution, torn between the cautious view that “it’s strange to crown a game whose reputation hasn’t settled right after release” and the speculation that “the release date was deliberately timed for this.”

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “This Year’s GOTY Is Seriously, Actually Impossible to Call wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.”

  • Liella!’s Prolonged Slump: 5ch Says the Only Fix Is to Go All-In on ‘Low-Status Men’

A thread titled “The story of Liella!, now the weakest group in the series, begins its climb back from here” appeared on 5ch’s Love Live! board. With new anime and manga releases drying up, fans argued over how to turn Liella! around. Some said the group should narrow its focus to its core fanbase and change its musical direction; others said it should give its sub-units clearer, more distinct identities the way other groups do. Still, pessimistic voices pushed back, saying “we’re long past the point where the music alone can fix this,” and the thread never reached a consensus.

This is the final chapter of 'The Story That Grants My Wishes' (a real Liella! song title).
    6AnonymousSep 11, 2026 18:34
My bad for assuming this was an anti-fan thread — it's actually a pretty reasonable take.
Maybe they should lean harder into selling the cast (voice actors) as personalities too.

The only way is to target balding middle-aged guys and low-status men (a Japanese term for socially/economically disadvantaged men). Forget the 'family-friendly, general audience' approach — that's trying to turn a 0 into a 1. Turning an existing 10 into a 20 is Liella!'s real path back to life.
    9AnonymousSep 11, 2026 18:41
As for the music, there'd be no problem at all if they just covered 'Snow Halation' (a classic μ's song) at a live show.
Sure, it'd stir up backlash afterward, but the people who'd complain don't spend money on Liella! anyway, so just ignore them.

They've been running the same playbook for six years, and even the cast themselves have been asking for songs with more of that flashy energy, but nothing's improved at all — at this point just covering 'KNOT' would be faster.
    18AnonymousSep 11, 2026 19:15
There's no doubt Star's songs are absolute garbage-tier, but we're long past the point where the music alone can fix this.

Nijigasaki's high-energy songs were designed from the ground up purely to hype up a crowd, so they wouldn't actually showcase what Liella! is good at performance-wise.
They should be ruled out as cover options.
    21AnonymousSep 11, 2026 19:21
    Re: #19
Maybe so, but if you don't have any hype cards of your own, you have to borrow them from elsewhere.
It's like starting a trading card deck — you throw in something like Blue-Eyes White Dragon even though it clearly doesn't fit your deck concept, just because you don't have anything better. That's basically where they're at.

    Re: #28
If everyone became Suzuhara, that'd be the end…
Even if they need to prioritize low-status men, that doesn't mean the whole group has to go full 'aren't-I-cute' pandering mode.
    30AnonymousSep 11, 2026 19:31
Love Live! used to be extremely reluctant about crossover collabs and covers between its groups — doing that is actually a pretty recent thing.
If they'd started crossover covers back during Aqours' peak, the groundwork for fans accepting it would be laid by now, but doing it this late just seems likely to invite backlash.
    32AnonymousSep 11, 2026 19:34
    Re: #30
Yeah, it was right around 'Ijigen Live' (the 'Dimension' concert) that covers and shuffle units started happening.
The fact that the very first 'Love Live Fes' was basically just each group performing separately in one-third slots is still having lingering effects.
    34AnonymousSep 11, 2026 19:36
The OP is also treating writing off the anime as a given premise from the start.

That mindset alone means it's not really Love Live! anymore.
    36AnonymousSep 11, 2026 19:38
    Re: #34
It's not that we're writing it off — there's simply no more anime coming, so we have no choice but to treat it as a given. Sure, having it would be better, but you can't work with what you don't have.

If they can't write new songs, covering other groups' sub-unit songs is definitely a viable option.
    40AnonymousSep 11, 2026 19:41
    Re: #35
Personally I think the sub-units are the whole reason Liella! fell apart, so I want them scrapped for good.
Every sub-unit just feels like a scaled-down version of the full 11-member Liella! to me, and even if they did cover other groups' unit songs, you can't even picture which unit would take on AZALEA's songs or which would take on DiverDiva's, right?
    44AnonymousSep 11, 2026 19:44
I honestly don't get what Star (Liella!) even wants to be going forward.
After the anime ended, all they gave us was variety shows and school-play-tier stage skits — don't come at me about the music after that.

    46AnonymousSep 11, 2026 19:49
As for the sub-units… even 'Ikizu-Live' (the rival group nicknamed for constantly making shuffle units) manages to give each shuffle unit its own distinct flavor every time, but Liella! barely manages that at all.

I question whether every unit needed to go for the 'cool' image. Management was probably thinking something like 'heh, we can make three Guilty Kisses!' but all they actually did was split Liella! into three pieces.
    71AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:41
Within voice-actor units (even though they're not playing themselves as voice actors), they read as young, cute, and good at singing and dancing — but judged as general idols, they're not especially young, cute, or skilled at singing and dancing either.
Even if they ditch their in-show characters, they should stay within the anime-song (anisong) scene rather than leave it entirely.
There are examples of franchise-born units — like Milky Holmes, Earphones, or WUG (Wake Up, Girls!) — that went on to work outside their original franchise.
But none of them ever actually left the anisong scene.
If they're going to separate Liella! from 'Superstar!!', the best move is to make it an independent anisong group — have them sing theme songs for other anime, etc.
Their audience is, after all, the anisong-listening crowd, not the general public.
    73AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:44
    Re: #71
Even if they tried to get tie-in themes for other anime, their voices are way too lacking in distinct character for anyone to actually cast them — these are Liella!, not Aqours, remember?
    74AnonymousSep 11, 2026 22:16
    Re: #71
Love Live! fans go easy on the cast and shower them with praise, but other fandoms aren't like that — if they're not skilled or don't show respect for the source material, they'll get torn apart without mercy.
If the cast has the resolve to take that beating and the actual skill to win over other franchises' fans, I'd love to see it, but honestly I think it's a stretch.

    Re: #81
I don't think that'd work. The ones who want to make it as individuals already have their own channels, and it's way easier to just get showered with praise on TikTok — that makes it a tough sell.

Whatever they do, they'll just end up as a watered-down copy of 'Seihasu' (apparently a nickname for a rival group known for this).

Background and Key Points of Debate

Liella! is the fictional school idol group featured in the anime “Love Live! Superstar!!” The Love Live! franchise runs several real-life performing units — μ’s, Aqours, Nijigasaki High School Idol Club, and Liella! — and in recent years, cross-group song covers and collaborations have started happening between them. What split opinion in the thread was whether the group should stick with its existing family-friendly, general-audience approach or pivot hard toward its core fanbase — a debate that recurs again and again around how to market idol content. It’s also worth noting that framings like “weakest in the series” or “anime and manga output has stalled” reflect the subjective impressions of posters in the thread, not externally verified facts.

  • CDTV’s “Autumn Thanksgiving Festival” Finale: Everyone Sings “Mi Amore” Together — 5ch: “This Year’s Defining Song”

On the September 11 broadcast of CDTV Live! Live!’s “Autumn Thanksgiving Festival 2026,” the show held its traditional finale segment in which every performing artist sings one song together, and the song chosen was “Mi Amore.” Reactions poured in on 5ch’s Hello! Project board right after the broadcast, with comments like “This is already the song of the year” and “Kohaku is a lock.” The mass sing-along, which also pulled in performers from other groups like FRUITS ZIPPER and NiziU, became a hot topic, with some posters saying its popularity now rivals — or even surpasses — past hits like “Momoiro Kataomoi” and “Hatsukoi Cider.” At the same time, some took a cooler view on whether the song will actually make the year-end Kohaku Uta Gassen lineup, making for a thread that mixed genuine hope with realistic skepticism.

    Background and points of discussion

CDTV Live! Live! is a TBS music program broadcast live late on Tuesday nights, and “Autumn Thanksgiving Festival” is one of its special editions. Having every performing artist sing one song together at the show’s finale is a longstanding tradition of the program, and this time the song chosen was “Mi Amore.” What split opinion in the thread was whether this song will actually be selected for the year-end Kohaku Uta Gassen — while hopeful voices stood out, cooler remarks like “Sorry, it’s not making Kohaku~” also appeared, so it’s worth noting the posts were a mix of fan wishful thinking and more realistic assessment. The comparisons to “Momoiro Kataomoi” and “Hatsukoi Cider” likewise reflect posters’ personal impressions rather than any official sales figures. The original thread also contained posts exposing a specific individual’s personal background and posts disparaging a real idol’s appearance; these have been excluded as unrelated to the focus of this article.

Someone already mentioned it, but yeah, this one.
Going into the ending you start to get a "wait… could it be…" feeling, but it still hits like a truck when the client (De Niro) is revealed.
    12AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:03
Out of all the movies mentioned so far, The Mist is the only one whose ending I actually remember lol
    18AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:11
That line near the end of Planet of the Apes — "So mankind really did do it…" — hit hard.
    19AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:12
The part where Marty, who was supposed to have gone back to the future, comes running up — that gave me chills.

Not sure Hong Kong films count as "Western," but the ending of Gunrou Taisen is insane.
Due to a production accident, the lead actress genuinely catches fire on screen,
the footage freezes into a stop-motion frame, and the story just… ends right there.
It closes out on newspaper clippings about the actress's severe burns.
The accident happened during what was supposed to be the film's final action scene, so the story technically still worked as an ending.

These are all movies even I know, and I was a regular on the movie board 20 years ago lol

You wouldn't see such an obscure title come up anywhere outside a dedicated board.
    26AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:20
    Léon was heartbreaking.

I didn't get it back then, but watching it now, France's poverty and immigration issues feel a lot more real.
    28AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:22
Not exactly the last scene, but I'd say The Poseidon Adventure.

Watched it on TV as a kid and just sobbed in a pitch-black room as the survivors kept dropping off one by one during the escape.
My family still teases me about it.
    29AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:23
The ending of Summer Camp Inferno (Japanese release title for Sleepaway Camp) shocked me,
but it's such an obscure horror movie that hardly anyone knows it — shame really.
Though the movie itself wasn't all that great.

    For Japanese films:

The Foreign Duck, the Native Duck and God in a Coin Locker
    The Discarnates
    32AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:25
Speaking of horror movies only hardcore fans know, The House with Laughing Windows is another one —
the ending was pretty shocking too.
    34AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:26
    The Mist
    Se7en
    Planet of the Apes
Only the endings stick with me.
    35AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:26
    Terminator 3 was shocking —
like, wait, Judgment Day actually happens?!
    37AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:27
    The Others —
if only it hadn't come out after The Sixth Sense.

There was Zongeria before that, but
only zombie movie fans seem to know it.

    Primal Fear —
    Edward Norton's performance was insane.

Drunken Master II ends with Wong Fei-hung beating the villain in the Japanese theatrical cut,
but apparently in the uncut version he goes blind from the aftereffects and loses his mind afterward — a total bad ending.
Finding that out was a real shock.
    58AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:43
    Re: #40
Wong Fei-hung's been the subject of a ton of movies, but that ending is brutal.
If you swapped it for a Japanese equivalent, it'd be like Mito Kōmon (a beloved samurai-drama hero) getting attacked by villagers and beheaded on display.
    41AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:34
There are plenty of cases where the shock comes precisely from there being no real twist at all.
    42AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:34
He loses it from drinking too much, right.

Too bad — I figured out The Sixth Sense's twist early on.
Wish I could've enjoyed it more without knowing.

The Day of the Triffids (Japanese title: 人類SOS, "SOS Humanity") —
I was a fan of the original novel, and I was floored that the movie gave the Triffids a weakness: seawater.
    49AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:37
I watched Matchstick Men with zero prior info, so I got played perfectly and it felt great.
With The Mist, I'd already heard the ending was gut-wrenching, so I saw it coming — kind of a bummer.
    52AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:37
If we're talking about being shocked while actually watching it —
    Carrie.
    55AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:38
Not quite "shocking," but there's Tonari wa Shizuka ni Warau (lit. "The Neighbor Smiles Quietly").
    57AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:41
Friday the 13th actually has a twist ending too —
that ending is what sets it apart from your average slasher flick.
    59AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:43
    The Best Offer —
honestly, I just burst out laughing at the ending.
Made me realize that once shock goes far enough, people just crack up.

    Cube —
like, wait, THAT'S the one who makes it out?!
    61AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:54
Fight Club, Perfect Blue, A Beautiful Mind, stuff like that.
    65AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:56
If we're talking a slick, brilliant ending — The Sting.
    67AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:58
    Fail-Safe
Nothing's topped it for me so far.
    68AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:59
The Silence of the Lambs —
the ending had me like, "wait, hold on…"
    70AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:59
    Dancer in the Dark —
even Matsuko Deluxe (popular Japanese TV personality) called it a masterpiece.
    71AnonymousSep 11, 2026 22:00
Wait, what actually happens at the end of The Sting again?

    Background and Key Points

How “shocking” an ending feels is a topic that tends to split opinion depending on era and genre, and the thread lined up well-worn favorites like The Sixth Sense and Planet of the Apes alongside titles known only to a niche audience, like Angel Heart and Gunrou Taisen. Drunken Master II, mentioned at #40, is known for having a different ending in its Japanese theatrical release than in the uncut overseas version, the result of the ending being swapped out during distribution. Gunrou Taisen, mentioned at #22, is known among film fans for the story that footage of the lead actress genuinely suffering severe burns in an on-set accident was used as-is for the final scene. There were also comments, like at #46, that “figuring out the twist too early ruins the fun,” pointing to a broader debate over how to handle spoilers.
