  • Daisuke Hori Looks Wrecked on Day 3 of His Endurance Livestream — 5ch: ‘From Microsleep to Eternal Sleep’

Daisuke Hori, a self-proclaimed “short sleeper” who claims to have slept just 30 minutes a day for 17 years, is running an endurance livestream apparently meant to prove it — and by day three, he looks visibly wrecked. The stream has caught him quietly closing his eyes off-camera, talking less and less, and struggling to even get through basic workouts, sparking a mix of genuine concern and dark amusement on 5ch. While the stream’s popularity — peaking at over 60,000 concurrent viewers — became a talking point in itself, plenty of posters remain skeptical that the 30-minute sleep claim is even true, splitting the thread between worry over his health and doubt over his story.

Lmao he’s sneakily shutting his eyes off-screen

Even 5 hours a day would already count as a short sleeper, and 3 hours would already have people going "does someone like that really exist?"
30 minutes is obviously a lie
Even people who claim to average 5 hours a day are probably sneaking in naps

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Daisuke Hori has publicly claimed to be a “short sleeper” who has slept just 30 minutes a day for 17 years, and this thread covers day three of an endurance livestream apparently meant to demonstrate that lifestyle. As his eye-closing and reduced talking became more noticeable than on day one, viewers have simultaneously voiced concern for his health and skepticism toward the sleep claim itself. That said, it’s worth noting that nothing in the stream or the thread confirms he has retracted the claim or that it has been proven false — accusations like “scam” or “selling info products” remain speculation on an anonymous message board. As the figure of over 60,000 concurrent viewers suggests, much of the audience seems less interested in whether the claim is true than in the thrill of wondering whether he’s actually going to collapse.

  • Told to Flex Their Luxury Watches, One 5ch User Says ‘Just a Casio, Really’ — Gets Showered With Praise

In a chat thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board (livegalileo), someone posted the provocative line “Anyone who doesn’t own a luxury watch isn’t allowed to post here” — only for another user to reply with the unpretentious “Just a Casio, pretty normal though,” which drew a wave of praise like “You’re the real number one.”

The thread then rolled on in typical live-chat fashion, drifting through questions about why crab prices seem to keep climbing, photos of people’s lunches, and all kinds of idle chatter. True to the genre, the conversation never builds toward any conclusion — it just hops from topic to topic without much connection.

    Background and Key Points

Threads like this on live-chat boards tend to run less on deep dives into any single topic and more on the back-and-forth banter and running gags of the regulars, with the subject shifting every few minutes as a matter of course. What’s interesting about the luxury-watch exchange is that the praise went not to bragging about price, but to the confident reply of someone who didn’t own one at all. The question about crab prices reads like an offhand observation tied to recent shifts in import costs and market rates, but no one in the thread backed it up with hard numbers, so it shouldn’t be taken as more than a passing impression. Note that the original thread also contained posts that risked veering into personal attacks or unverified rumor — comparisons of Hololive members’ view counts, jabs at specific individuals, and unconfirmed claims about a real celebrity’s divorce — so this article leaves those out and only excerpts the harmless, chat-like exchanges.

  • ‘My Pay Never Changes, Only My Taxes Go Up’ — Japan’s Impoverishment Machine Sparks Backlash

A report claiming that “wages aren’t rising, yet taxes and social insurance premiums keep getting heavier” sparked a wide-ranging debate on 5ch’s News Express+ board. According to an OECD survey, as of 2022 Japan ranked 25th out of 38 member countries in wages, with an average in the high 4-million-yen range — a huge gap compared to top countries earning over 10 million yen. In the thread, users criticized the politicians responsible for tax hikes and ballooning social security costs, vented frustration over “hidden burdens” like consumption tax and national health insurance premiums, and debated the merits of the welfare (livelihood protection) system, with some expressing regret over how companies and policy abandoned the “Employment Ice Age” generation. Others pushed back, arguing that “wages actually are rising,” splitting opinion over the gap between statistics and lived experience.

    (details omitted)

According to a survey by the OECD (Organisation for International Cooperation and Development), Japan ranked 25th in wages among the 38 member countries in 2022. While top-ranked countries like Switzerland, Iceland, and Luxembourg sit at the 10-million-yen level, Japan is in the high 4-million-yen range — far below the member average.

For reference, according to the National Tax Agency’s “Reiwa 6 (2024) Survey on Private Sector Salaries,” average annual income by age group breaks down as follows.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The National Tax Agency’s “Survey on Private Sector Salaries” and OECD wage comparisons make headlines every year, but it’s worth noting the difference between "average" and "median." Averages are easily pulled upward by high earners, so they tend to diverge from what people actually feel. As some commenters noted, nominal labor productivity itself is on an upward trend — the real issue lies in a distribution structure where productivity gains aren’t reflected in wages. Rising taxes and social insurance premiums also have structural roots in the natural growth of social security costs driven by the falling birthrate and aging population, so the situation can’t be explained by simply blaming the government. The trajectory of economic growth since the consumption tax was introduced, the expansion of temp staffing work, and delayed support for the Employment Ice Age generation are all policy decisions that have piled up over the years to produce the current situation — a nuance that’s easy to miss in the back-and-forth of comments alone.

  • ‘Marriage Is Life’s Graveyard’ Debate Erupts Into Married-vs-Single Flame War — 5ch Users Whip Out ‘Certificates of Registration,’ LOL

The thread kicked off with a simple question: “Old-school netizens always used to call marriage ‘life’s graveyard’ — but was that actually a lie?” The discussion quickly spiraled into a slap-fight over who’s really better off, singles or married people, and it hit a full boil when a poster claiming to be married posted a photo of a property registration certificate as “proof” he was really married. The single camp fired back that he was just an unmarried guy still living with his parents, borrowing his niece’s or nephew’s stuff to troll. From there it turned into an escalating duel of “proof” screenshots. Posters also split over a more fundamental question: is getting married down to luck, or to effort?

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The phrase “marriage is life’s graveyard” has long been used online by single people to justify their status — but this thread starts from the opposite position, arguing that saying was never true. In practice, divorce is common enough that pushback appeared too: posters pointed out that “one in three married couples divorces,” and cited an acquaintance whose divorce mediation dragged on for years and ended with 150,000 yen a month in child-support payments, suggesting marriage isn’t always a rose garden. The debate also split over whether getting married comes down to luck or to effort, with one side citing Japan’s current surplus of women to argue that time and effort matter more, and the other insisting luck is still the deciding factor. Notably, the “proof” documents that became the centerpiece of the argument — registers (登記簿) — are legally kept in original form only at the Legal Affairs Bureau and can’t be physically taken out by individuals, a technicality other posters were quick to call out.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (NanJ / “Whatever’s on Live” board) thread: “[Sad News] Old-school netizens’ claim that ‘marriage is life’s graveyard’ turns out to be a lie, lol”.

  • “Truly happy”: Haruka Kitaguchi sets Japan record and takes world No. 1 with a massive throw ranking 10th all-time, beating Chinese rival

In the women’s javelin final at the Ultimate Championship (Budapest, Hungary, September 12 / September 13 Japan time), Haruka Kitaguchi launched a throw that set a new Japan national record and ranks 10th all-time in the world, taking the gold ahead of an 18-year-old Chinese thrower whose personal best ranks 2nd all-time. On 5ch reaction threads, commenters buzzed about the form improvements since her coaching change, expressed both surprise and anticipation over the rapidly rising Chinese athlete, praised Kitaguchi’s fluency in English and Czech, and noted the news that her win locks in a wildcard spot for next year’s World Athletics Championships in Beijing.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Haruka Kitaguchi was the gold medalist at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, and this latest win came on Day 2 of this season’s “Ultimate Championship.” The thread notes that her victory secured a wildcard berth for next year’s World Athletics Championships in Beijing, though the original article doesn’t specify the exact qualifying criteria. The biggest talking point was the rapid rise of the 18-year-old Chinese thrower with a mark ranking 2nd all-time — commenters speculated about changes in form or equipment advances, while others pointed out that because javelin has a small competitor pool, standout athletes can emerge more easily. It’s worth noting that this Chinese athlete injured herself on her second throw and withdrew afterward, making the head-to-head comparison limited. Praise for Kitaguchi’s English and Czech language skills also came up, which reflects a side of her already known from her regular interactions with international media.

  • Yumeno Kyusaku’s ‘Dogra Magra’ Special Edition Up for Preorder at ¥7,000 — Its ‘You’ll Go Insane’ Obi Strip Blurb Sparks Buzz

Yumeno Kyusaku’s novel Dogra Magra is famous for the striking obi (belly-band) blurb slapped on its 1976 Kadokawa Bunko paperback: “Anyone who finishes reading this will suffer a mental breakdown within hours.” Preorders for a new special edition have now become a hot topic on 5ch, where the thread mixed comments like “I’ve already got the paperback, but ¥7,000 is a tough call” and gripes about the cover design with a broader debate over which of the “Three Great Mystery Novels” — alongside The Black Death Mansion Murders and An Offering to Nothingness — still holds up as an enjoyable read today.

“Anyone who reads this through to the end is said to suffer some form of mental breakdown within a matter of hours. Whatever happens to the reader is a result of this book’s phantasmagoric, bizarre content, and we cannot be held responsible — please understand this in advance.”

This was the tagline printed on the obi strip of the first printing when Yumeno Kyusaku’s two-volume novel Dogra Magra was published by Kadokawa Bunko in 1976.

This writer (BuzzFeed Japan’s Ando) has also attempted to finish Dogra Magra, but gave up in the face of its bewilderingly convoluted structure, where it’s impossible to tell where reality ends and dream begins.

Same deal as H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos — probably fascinating if you'd read it fresh when it first came out, but it's not all that gripping today. What you'd call a classic (important, not necessarily a thrill to read now).

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Dogra Magra is a detective novel published in 1935, grouped with Oguri Mushitaro’s The Black Death Mansion Murders and Nakai Hideo’s An Offering to Nothingness as Japan’s “Three Great Mystery Novels.” The line “will cause a mental breakdown” attached to the 1976 Kadokawa Bunko edition was the publisher’s own promotional copy — there’s no actual reader on record who finished the book and genuinely lost their mind. The thread also debated whether protagonist Ichiro Kure truly is the culprit behind the killings, along with opinions on the earlier film adaptation, though in every case interpretations stayed split thanks to the original’s notorious difficulty. This new special edition is simply a repackaging with different binding from the paperback — the story itself isn’t changing.

A video posted by an AKB member on TikTok, featuring an “isolation” (a dance technique where only one part of the body moves) built around big neck movements, went viral and sparked a thread on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. Some viewers reacted with amazement — “Isn’t this incredible?” and “That’s not humanly possible” — while others with dance experience gave a cooler assessment: “You’ll find tons of people who can do this at any dance school” and “It’s just an ordinary isolation.” The thread expanded into comparisons of dance skill between Hello! Project and AKB, differences in ability among other members, and explanations of the term “isolation.”

Is there anyone else who can even do this? lol

    56AnonymousSep 13, 2026 09:42
    Re: #54
    It's 'isolation'
and it's not just about the neck

Background and Key Points of This Story

“Isolation” is a dance term for the technique of moving a single part of the body independently — the neck, shoulders, and hips are the classic examples — and it’s commonly taught as basic training at dance schools. What sparked this thread was an AKB member’s neck isolation: to an untrained eye it looks astonishing, but dancers with experience see it as just one basic technique, which is why reactions split so sharply. It’s also worth noting the thread appeared on a board that’s normally home to Hello! Project idol fans, so the AKB member’s skill level prompted comparisons with Hello! Project’s own dancing ability, along with a bit of rival needling like “Hello! Project should take notes too.” Comparing dance skill between idol groups is a perennial 5ch topic, and this thread is very much in that tradition.

  • “Ohtani Is Effectively Done,” LA Reporter Says Bluntly — Placed on 15-Day Injured List

The Los Angeles Dodgers announced on September 11 (local time) that they had placed Shohei Ohtani on the 15-day injured list (IL). Dylan Hernandez, a reporter for the local paper California Post, made a pointed comment on his own YouTube show: “Ohtani’s season is effectively over. The Dodgers are just pretending it isn’t.” The report sparked a thread on 5ch, where some posters pointed to the toll of his two-way (pitching and hitting) workload and changes in his physique, while others questioned why Ohtani was getting hit so much harder than Takefusa Kubo, whose slump was reported around the same time, and voiced distrust of a reporter who had also gone after Ohtani during the Ippei Mizuhara scandal — resulting in a mix of defense and criticism.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Ohtani has a history of elbow surgery, and the strain of his “two-way” role as both pitcher and hitter has repeatedly been a subject of debate. It’s worth noting that what the team actually announced this time is only a 15-day injured list placement — not an official statement that his season is completely over. Reporter Dylan Hernandez’s comment that Ohtani is “effectively done” is simply his own personal read, not the club’s official position. Alongside criticism of Ohtani’s condition and performance, the thread also raised the gap in coverage compared to reports of Takefusa Kubo’s slump, as well as lingering distrust toward a reporter who had also gone after Ohtani back during the Ippei Mizuhara scandal — making the media’s own reporting, and not just the players themselves, a point of contention.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Born in 1988, Natsuna is an actress known for playing the heroine in NHK’s 2012 morning drama “Jun to Ai,” as well as for a nude scene in the film “GANTZ” and the series “Sweet Revenge.” She married a non-celebrity man in 2018 and continues acting while raising children. Rather than reacting to the swimsuit photos themselves, much of the thread veered into older topics — debate over “Jun to Ai,” the star-studded cast she appeared with in the film “Saki,” and long-running plastic surgery speculation — a tendency typical of the Geisoku+ board. Comments making definitive claims about another actress’s dating history, or that appeared to confuse her with an unrelated celebrity’s scandal, were excluded from this article since they couldn’t be verified.

  • 100-Million-Yen Tokyo Condo Sparks Debate Over Cramped Layout vs. Prime Location

Images posted on X (formerly Twitter) showing a couple planning to buy a 100-million-yen (roughly $650,000) 3LDK condo in Tokyo went viral on 5ch. The floor plan drew attention for its low ceilings and cramped rooms, sparking shocked reactions like “100 million yen is way too much for this” and “This looks smaller than my 110,000-yen-a-month rental.” Others, though, praised the location’s access to Haneda Airport and central Tokyo, as well as its security. The thread’s focus shifted away from the merits of the property itself and toward a broader clash over renting vs. owning, and central Tokyo vs. the regions.

    Re: #33
If you're worried about noise, the top floor is basically the only choice
    42AnonymousSep 13, 2026 09:35
But do you really want to raise kids in Nagoya?
    44AnonymousSep 13, 2026 09:36
    Re: #42
    Healthcare's free there
    46AnonymousSep 13, 2026 09:38
    Re: #44
I mean, is there even a municipality left these days where kids' medical care isn't free?
    51AnonymousSep 13, 2026 09:39
    Re: #44
    I meant education, though?
    47AnonymousSep 13, 2026 09:38
Regional cities like Nagoya, Fukuoka, and Sendai are actually more livable, though you get zero concert tours or events
    49AnonymousSep 13, 2026 09:39
    Re: #47
I don't get it, the only people who want to go to concerts and events constantly are single otaku anyway
If it's just a few times a year, take the shinkansen to Tokyo
    56AnonymousSep 13, 2026 09:42
    Re: #20
    Same goes for renting though
    64AnonymousSep 13, 2026 09:45
    Re: #56
With renting you can just move if you don't like it
    67AnonymousSep 13, 2026 09:47
    Re: #65
    This exactly
I think you really feel the benefit of being close to Tokyo Station and Haneda once you have kids
    71AnonymousSep 13, 2026 09:49
    Re: #67
If being near Haneda is all you want, a dump like this wouldn't even cost 100 million in Ota Ward
    114AnonymousSep 13, 2026 10:12
    Re: #67
Once you have kids there's no way you could keep living in a room this small
    81AnonymousSep 13, 2026 09:53
Too scared to buy a condo in Tokyo
    Earthquakes, interest rates
    82AnonymousSep 13, 2026 09:54
    Re: #81
If an earthquake strong enough to take down a condo hits, a detached house would be completely wrecked anyway
    87AnonymousSep 13, 2026 09:56
Seriously, renting might be the strongest option in this country
    91AnonymousSep 13, 2026 09:59
    Re: #87
It's not that renting's the strongest, buying's just normally too expensive to afford
    94AnonymousSep 13, 2026 10:00
    Re: #87
Maybe that's true out in the countryside, but renting in central Tokyo makes you a slave to your landlord
    92AnonymousSep 13, 2026 09:59
    These people are
happiest just doing exactly what the media told them to do…
    99AnonymousSep 13, 2026 10:04
    Re: #92
You guys are doing the exact same thing, just because the internet told you to
    93AnonymousSep 13, 2026 10:00
Condos usually use way cheaper fittings than detached houses, so this one is pretty bad
    95AnonymousSep 13, 2026 10:01
    Re: #93
Nah, condos normally have better fittings than houses
Though the kitchen in this one looks unusually cheap
    97AnonymousSep 13, 2026 10:02
Still, being a grown adult who still rents kind of makes you a second-class citizen, no?
    100AnonymousSep 13, 2026 10:04
    Re: #97
If you have kids, owning is better
    101AnonymousSep 13, 2026 10:05
Renting's fine when you're young, but moving gets tough once you're older
Rentals that'll actually take elderly tenants tend to be in bad locations with crappy interiors, overpriced, and that's all there is
So in the end even renters end up stuck staying put
    117AnonymousSep 13, 2026 10:16
    Re: #101
I heard rent hikes in Tokyo are brutal too
A coworker living in Setagaya said theirs is going from 150,000 to 180,000 yen starting next month…
    103AnonymousSep 13, 2026 10:07
An apartment building where kids can jump around without complaints will run you several hundred million yen
Cheap condos out in the regions are all paper-thin walls, a 24/7 high-stress environment

In the regions your only real option is a soundproofed house on a 200-plus square meter lot
    110AnonymousSep 13, 2026 10:11
    Re: #103
"Paper-thin condo" says it all lol
Between a 40-year-old building and a 15-year-old one, the older one is way quieter
If the soundproofing's actually better, paying a premium might be worth it
    104AnonymousSep 13, 2026 10:07
A 3LDK for 100 million yen is pretty normal though, isn't it?
    106AnonymousSep 13, 2026 10:09
    Re: #104
    You've clearly never actually condo-shopped
This living room's tiny, they just crammed it into a 3LDK label anyway
    105AnonymousSep 13, 2026 10:08
It's not just Japanese buyers either
From a global perspective, prices are cheap, housing's cheap, and it's safe
    This is a triple-A property
    108AnonymousSep 13, 2026 10:10
    Re: #105
Expensive properties also come with high management fees and reserve funds after you buy, but in exchange they handle all the security for you

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Behind the surge in Tokyo condo prices lie rising construction material and labor costs, along with growing dual-income household earnings and purchasing demand from overseas investors. This property is a textbook example of how location and infrastructure investment get baked into the price — contrary to the gut assumption that “100 million yen equals a mansion,” price here doesn’t scale with floor space. The thread split along the lines of “rent vs. own” and “central Tokyo vs. the regions,” focusing mainly on comparing lifestyle infrastructure like access to Haneda and central Tokyo against benefits such as subsidized child medical costs, while the actual merits of this unit’s design — the low ceilings, the cramped rooms — went largely undiscussed. Commenters also claimed that “rent hikes in Tokyo are brutal,” but what the thread didn’t mention is that housing costs across central Tokyo, both new-build and resale, have in fact been trending upward across the board in recent years due to rising material costs and labor shortages, making it hard to avoid paying more whether you rent or buy.
