  • Dodgers Get Serious About 157 km/h Right-Hander Shoki Oda — VP Personally Scouts Him

In an unusual move, a Dodgers vice president reportedly showed up in person to scout the Japan-vs-Taiwan game (at Taipei Dome) in the U-18 Asia Championship, where Yokohama High School right-hander Shoki Oda was pitching — and now 18 MLB teams have descended on Taiwan. Opinions in the thread were split over his outings, including the game against Chiben Wakayama, with reactions swinging wildly between praise for good starts and harsh criticism whenever he gave up runs. Alongside that, voices criticizing NPB’s low signing-bonus cap and lack of financial payback clashed with others worried about the risks of jumping straight to the majors out of high school.

Baseball's always some bidding war over Japanese players.
Though there sure aren't many Japanese major leaguers considering that.

    Probably because it's far away.
Also, you can still make a living in NPB.

Better to build up your body and your popularity in Japan first.

    Especially popularity.

Signing a Japanese player doesn't automatically mean the money rolls in.
    12AnonymousSep 13, 2026 10:40
I trust the Dodgers' player development.
Though he'd start in the minors, so who knows how it'll actually turn out.

    NPB seriously lowballs players.
The signing bonus cap should be raised to ¥500 million,
and a ¥2 billion annual salary should be the norm.
The league's grown to roughly 2000s-MLB level,
but it never gives anything back to the players on the field.
No wonder it's come to this.

    Especially the Hanshin Tigers.
Their revenue's about to hit ¥60 billion and their top salary is ¥500 million?
What kind of corrupt overlord operation is that (like something out of a samurai drama).
And they've got ¥12 billion in operating profit.
    19AnonymousSep 13, 2026 10:44
The signing bonus is several times what Japan offers, and he'd get to pick his team.
If he's got any MLB ambition at all, NPB doesn't stand a chance.
    20AnonymousSep 13, 2026 10:44
NPB is a textbook Japanese corporation through and through.
    Stingy as hell.
Hoards the profits internally and gives nothing back to the players on the field.

If anything, more players jumping to the US might be exactly what it takes to fix that broken culture.
    27AnonymousSep 13, 2026 10:52
    Re: #20
Same with soccer — given the country's economic size and the league's market size, player pay is way too low.

So it's kind of like having another Yamamoto-type pitcher?
If that's the case, grabbing Imanaga from the Cubs was still the better move.

The signing bonus cap should be ¥300 million. Guys like Ichiba and Nasuno got more than that back in the day anyway,
so it's not like it'd be some new problem now — except for one particular team.
    24AnonymousSep 13, 2026 10:49
    There's an upside too, though.

Let him try the majors early, and the signing bonus and development costs are all on the MLB team's dime.

If he flames out, you can just scoop him up cheap later.
    28AnonymousSep 13, 2026 10:54
Well, Hanshin lets amateur baseball use Koshien Stadium for free and keeps contributing massively to the amateur game, so I guess it can't be helped.

Makes sense historically — Japanese baseball started with high school ball at Koshien and college ball at Jingu Stadium. Pro teams didn't start running it as a business until much later.

    Re: #32
I think the Chiben Wakayama game was just fatigue — throwing a complete game right before it didn't help.
And remember, he took a line drive during the Kanagawa tournament and got hurt badly enough to need a wheelchair, 'just a bruise' or not. He'd barely pitched since, so of course he'd gas out when it counted.
    62AnonymousSep 13, 2026 12:07
    Re: #32
Just yesterday he was getting trashed before the game, then after the game it was all 'that's Oda for you.'
Honestly, after being run out there like that, getting hit in the Chiben Wakayama game barely means anything.

Well, if that's all it takes to flip on him, just let him go to America already.

Besides, high school players don't belong to NPB.
NPB hasn't lifted a finger to develop them — pretty shameless to act like they own him.

Background and Key Points of This Story

The player at the center of this ‘bidding war,’ Shoki Oda, is a right-handed pitcher from Yokohama High School, and thread sentiment about his pitching swung back and forth throughout the U-18 Asia Championship’s Japan-vs-Taiwan game, including his earlier start against Chiben Wakayama. Commenters were harshly critical before the game but flipped to praise once he pitched well — a classic case of 5ch’s volatile mood swings. Behind this is NPB’s draft system and its cap on signing bonuses: because high schoolers who go straight overseas fall outside that cap, MLB teams can approach them while they’re still in high school. Cases like Roki Sasaki and Shotaro Morii, who both jumped straight to the majors, came up repeatedly, with cautious voices warning that ‘going to the US too early is risky’ clashing against critics who argue it’s ‘only natural given how little NPB gives back to its players.’ One thing readers can easily misread: the VP’s scouting visit and the word ‘bidding war’ don’t mean a signing is already happening — as of this article, it’s still just an MLB team gathering information on and building a relationship with a high schooler.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “Are the Dodgers Getting Serious About a ‘Bidding War’ for Yokohama’s 157 km/h Right-Hander Shoki Oda? VP Makes Rare Personal Visit to Scout U-18 Asia Championship as 18 MLB Teams Flock to Taiwan.”

  • CDTV Fes Autographed T-Shirt Resells for ¥100,000 on Mercari — 5ch: “Don’t Let Scalpers Profit”

At “CDTV Fes,” a music festival hosted by the TBS music program “CDTV live! live!,” T-shirts bearing handwritten messages from members of Juice=Juice were given away to the audience. One of these shirts was later found listed on the flea-market app Mercari for a whopping ¥100,000, sparking discussion on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. The poster who started the thread urged others not to buy it and to spread the word, writing “Please do not buy this under any circumstances.” But replies soon diverged: some questioned whether the winner was even a genuine Juice=Juice fan, noting that since the festival draws non-fans as well, a fan of another group may have simply lucked into it and resold it; others pushed back with the view that reselling itself is fine, and the thread turned into a broader debate.

The Juice=Juice message T-shirt from CDTV Fes is being resold on Mercari for an outrageous ¥100,000… I really can't forgive this!
This is precious merch filled with the members' feelings. Please do NOT buy it, so we don't let scalpers profit! Please help spread the word!

    10AnonymousSep 13, 2026 11:56
It's a big festival, so it probably ended up with someone who isn't even a fan of the group
    11AnonymousSep 13, 2026 11:57

If you look at the scalper's other listings, it's obvious which group's fan they are. Do they not realize they're dragging their own favorite member's name through the mud?
It was such a great event, which makes this all the more disappointing. If fans from both sides reported it all at once, they could probably get it taken down (but still, don't buy it!)

Exactly, the person who got it would probably post something like "a fan of [group] gave this to me," so it'd be win-win for everyone
It's sad that the mindset these days is just "don't need it, might as well sell it"
    57AnonymousSep 13, 2026 12:39
    Re: #52
    Or that
If there'd been a female fan nearby, they might've just handed it to her lol

Background and Key Points of This Story

CDTV Fes is a multi-artist music festival hosted by the TBS program “CDTV live! live!,” and tossing autographed merchandise from the stage into the crowd is a staple seen at other idol events too. Because merchandise handed out to an unspecified crowd doesn’t necessarily land with a fan of that particular group, this setup naturally invites resale and the spread of unverified claims. On the thread, the emotional stance that “reselling is unforgivable” sits alongside the more principled view that “what you do with something you received is your own business,” with no resolution reached. It’s worth noting that comments about the seller’s identity remain pure speculation, and it hasn’t been confirmed whether there was actually a clear rule prohibiting resale.

*This article is a summary compiled from excerpts of the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “The Juice=Juice autographed message T-shirt given out at CDTV Fes gets resold on Mercari for ¥100,000 lolololololololololol.”

  • India’s Cricket Team — Including a Player Earning ¥2.5 Billion a Year — Heads to the Nagoya Asian Games

India’s national cricket team will compete at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. The venue is normally used as a baseball stadium, but its turf has been relaid for this tournament, and it will be converted back into a baseball field once the games are over. Matches will use the “T20” format, which wraps up in just a few hours. India’s top players reportedly earn more than ¥2.5 billion (about $17 million) a year, and the sport boasts one of the largest fan bases and player pools in the world — yet it remains little known in Japan. The thread debated the reality behind this “lopsided popularity,” as well as whether it was appropriate for the article to invoke Shohei Ohtani’s name.

Cricket’s answer to “Mr. Ohtani” is coming to Japan. India’s national team — stars who earn massive salaries and fame in their domestic league back home — will appear at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.

It’s undeniably a minor sport in Japan, but globally it’s actually the second most popular sport after soccer. The Indian community in the Tokai region, along with cricket insiders, are eagerly awaiting the arrival of this “galáctico squad.” (By Keigo Okumura)

“I can’t believe a global superstar is actually coming here,” “Indians all over Japan are probably too excited to sleep.” At an Indian restaurant in Hamamatsu’s Naka Ward, members of the local cricket team “Hamamatsu Hunters” were already making plans to watch the matches.

Is there even a sport that sends its first-stringers to the Asian Games? Pretty much every sport sends its B-team or younger players.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Cricket is often billed as having the “second-largest fan base in the world,” but that’s largely a function of the sheer population of the Indian subcontinent, and its reach is concentrated in former British territories — a very different profile from soccer’s truly global spread. The venue for the Nagoya Asian Games isn’t a dedicated cricket facility either; it’s a baseball field that was renovated just for this tournament and will have its turf reverted afterward — a purely temporary arrangement. Where the thread split was over the headline’s use of Shohei Ohtani’s name. Given lingering irritation over reporters constantly asking athletes from unrelated sports for their thoughts on Ohtani, many commenters gave this article’s angle a cold “they’re just borrowing his name” reaction. At the same time, the sheer scale of cricket’s salaries and player base was met with genuine surprise.

  • Level-5’s Nintendo Direct Footage Buried in Dislikes After AI-Generated Fake Video Exposed

Level-5’s Nintendo Direct footage has been flooded with dislikes on YouTube. The trigger was the discovery that part of the video was actually AI-generated fake footage — and on 5ch, users pointed out the irony, since the company had previously stated it didn’t “use AI that much in its games.” With reports that the studio is simultaneously developing as many as 14 titles, some questioned whether its development structure can even keep up. The thread ended up tangled between two separate arguments — whether using AI is acceptable at all, and whether hiding AI-generated content and passing it off as real is acceptable — with the anti-AI camp and the pro-AI camp clashing throughout.

Lol, you're basically spinning it like "cheating is a sign of a capable man."

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Level-5 is an unlisted game company known for series like Yo-kai Watch, Inazuma Eleven, and Professor Layton, led by president Akihiro Hino. What drew the bulk of the criticism in the thread wasn’t the use of AI itself, but the fact that AI-generated footage was presented as if it were ordinary development footage — conflating that with the broader “is using AI acceptable” debate tends to muddy the real point. At the same time, the thread mixed in tangential threads of discussion, such as comparisons to the Winny case in debates over Japanese IT policy and comparisons of AI regulation across countries, which belong to a separate context from this specific incident. The report that the company is developing as many as 14 titles simultaneously also fueled speculation about how finished the footage really was, but that remains speculation within the thread rather than an officially confirmed fact.

  • Is PS5 Pro’s Power Really on Par with the RTX 5070? 5ch Users Split

A debate has broken out on 5ch’s “Hardware & Industry” (Geha) board over how to convert the PS5 Pro’s performance into GPU-equivalent terms. It started with the claim that the PS5 Pro is on par with an RTX 5070 (currently selling for around ¥140,000). Thread posters pushed back with more modest estimates, calling it “really more like an RTX 2060–3060 class” or “at best an RTX 3070 once you factor in optimization.” The sticking points were whether a simple FLOPS comparison even makes sense, the technical gap between the PS5 Pro’s PSSR upscaling and NVIDIA’s DLSS, and whether the CPU is the real bottleneck — with some also questioning whether comparing products across different generations and architectures is valid at all.

    5AnonymousSep 13, 2026 09:16

Enough with the con-artist talk about 'real-world performance' and 'optimization.'
Put Linux on a PS5 with none of the optimizations or proprietary features running, and it's barely different from the stock PS5 —
so it really is just what the spec sheet says:
    a Zen 2 8-core CPU with a 36-CU RDNA2 GPU.
    96AnonymousSep 13, 2026 12:16
20- and 30-series cards don't natively support DLSS 4.5's transformer model so it runs heavier, but DLSS 4.0 works with almost no downside on them.
Even the latest FSR 4.1 is said to still not have caught up to DLSS 4.0's super resolution — neither side has frame generation, but PC also has the option to use FSR or 'Ahiru' (Lossless Scaling, nicknamed "the duck") as an add-on.
Well, they probably had no choice but to partner with Radeon for the APU, but there's no way to win with hardware that can't even beat NVIDIA's latest cards.
    107AnonymousSep 13, 2026 12:27
    Re: #96
What makes 'Ahiru' (Lossless Scaling) strong is the combo trick of running upscaling on the discrete GPU while running frame generation on the iGPU in parallel😮

    100AnonymousSep 13, 2026 12:21
    Re: #97
"Full-spec RDNA2" is kind of a weird phrase to begin with.
Anyway, the PS5's backend is still basically RDNA1, so compared to the Xbox Series X or an RX 6600 XT, it's clearly riddled with bottlenecks.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The PS5 Pro pairs a custom AMD GPU (based on the RDNA2 generation) with a Zen 2 8-core CPU, and includes its own upscaling feature, PSSR, along with ray tracing support. But because its architecture differs from NVIDIA’s RTX series, there are technical limits to comparing the two using raw TFLOPS figures alone. The thread split over whether to judge performance by theoretical compute figures or by real-world performance that factors in comparisons with DLSS and FSR, with some also pointing to a weak CPU as a likely bottleneck. The fact that the entire GPU market, including the RTX 5070, has seen sharp price increases over the past few months has further complicated the comparison. One point readers can easily misread is that phrases like “equivalent to X” tend to gloss over differences in generation and architecture — and even within the thread, no clear consensus was reached.

It was originally a cooking show called Danshi Gohan that Taichi Kokubun and Shimpei Kurihara ran together for about 10 years, but after Kokubun ended up the way he did, it became a solo cooking show for Kurihara

    Background and Key Points

“Peko Mogu Kitchen” is a spin-off of “Danshi Gohan,” the long-running cooking show hosted for years by Taichi Kokubun and Shimpei Kurihara; it launched after Kokubun’s departure, with Kurihara taking over as main host. Kurihara is the son of cooking expert Harumi Kurihara, and the show has previously featured guest appearances from Hello! Project OGs and current members alike, including Ai Kago and Maki Goto. The thread’s focus centers on whether Rio Kitagawa, who has served as assistant for the past two weeks, will continue next week or be swapped out for Sakura Ishiyama — though it’s worth noting this is speculation drawn from the show’s next-episode preview footage, not an official announcement.

  • Buff Foreign Man Surrounded and Beaten by Japanese Biker Gang

A video believed to have been filmed in Japan has gone viral on X and become a hot topic across 5ch’s boards. A tall, muscular foreign man driving behind a pack of bōsōzoku (outlaw biker gang) riders honked his horn, sending the gang into a rage. The argument escalated into a brawl, and the footage shows the man being run over by a motorcycle and kicked while surrounded by the group. Thread posters repeatedly noted that physique and strength count for little against sheer numbers, while others criticized the biker gang or debated whether the story as described was even true.

Even a jacked, ripped bodybuilder ends up like this against a biker gang.

Getting run over by the bike is just the opener — then they surround him and kick him all at once.

A Nihon Kempo instructor once told me: “Even the police call in riot squads when they need to round up bōsōzoku.”

You always post that same video.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

According to National Police Agency statistics, crackdowns on bōsōzoku gangs have been trending downward for years, which is the backdrop for the “wait, these still exist?” reactions. At the same time, the idea that numbers matter more than size or strength in a group-versus-individual fight is a point often raised even among people with real combat experience — commenters in the thread debated its truth by citing Mikuru Asakura’s multi-opponent fight and other examples. Note that partway through, the thread veered into an unrelated political spat over criticism of the Okinawa Prefectural Police, along with discriminatory remarks about race and ethnicity, so those posts have been excluded from this article. It’s also worth noting that the video alone doesn’t objectively establish the circumstances behind the horn-honking, so opinions remain divided on who was actually at fault.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has called for the entire AI industry to slow the pace at which it boosts AI capabilities, citing growing concern over “serious” risks the technology poses to humanity.

On 5ch, opinions split over what’s really behind the remark. Some took a cynical view: “A company that’s already reached the top of the pack is just trying to conveniently hit the brakes on the competition.” Others offered a different read: “This looks more like relief now that Chinese AI firms have lost some momentum, easing the cutthroat competition.” The discussion also branched into the trajectory of the US-China AI race and visions of a future where AI supplants humanity.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei reportedly said that, given the serious risks involved, the industry should slow the pace at which it races to boost AI capabilities. Thread opinion split over what he really meant. One camp took a cynical view: “A company that’s already reached the top of the industry is just conveniently invoking ‘slowing down’ to outmaneuver everyone else.” Another offered a different analysis: “With Chinese AI development showing signs of losing steam, there’s now room to step back from the cutthroat competition.” What readers may be missing is that this “slow down” proposal is simply one company’s message, not a binding international framework — and since the US and China are each pursuing AI development according to their own agendas, one company’s restraint doesn’t necessarily translate into an industry-wide slowdown.

It’s become a hot topic on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“geha”) board that Square Enix and other publishers are increasingly releasing titles simultaneously (multi-platform) on Nintendo’s new home console, the Switch 2. Threads pointed to Resident Evil 9 hitting the series’ fastest-ever sales after going multi-platform on Switch 2, and to Square Enix’s financial results reportedly improving since its pivot toward Switch, with many posters calling multi-platform releases “just obvious business sense.” Others noted, however, that some titles are skipping physical PS5 releases and that PS5’s retail shelf presence seems to be shrinking, sparking debate over where each platform stands going forward.

As long as you can play the game you want on the hardware you already own, there's no problem at all

In the future, Switch-family software is basically going to be all that's left on store shelves, so of course they're desperately trying to funnel users onto Switch 2
That's especially true for Japanese third parties — pretty much all of them make their money off special-edition packages anyway
Overseas publishers are putting whatever they can onto game cards for users furious about discs disappearing
PS5 is basically self-destructing on its own and handing its users over to Switch 2

    Re: #128
Seriously, even counting indies, there's zero buzz about anything selling well on PS5 😃

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The Switch 2 is Nintendo’s new home console released in 2026, and like its predecessor, it has seen publishers embrace a strategy of releasing many third-party titles simultaneously (multi-platform) across systems. Posters pointed to Resident Evil 9, said to have hit the series’ fastest-ever sales after going multi-platform on Switch 2, along with reports that Square Enix’s own earnings have been strong, as evidence in favor of the multi-platform approach. Meanwhile, the PS5 continues to be marketed as a home console, but some titles have skipped physical releases on it, which posters linked to a perceived shrinking of its retail presence. Opinion in the thread split over whether going multi-platform is simply sound economic sense or amounts to sidelining a particular platform, with some praising the cost-effectiveness and outsized promotional reach of Nintendo Direct, while others questioned what purpose PS5 versions still serve. Note that the sales comparisons and Nintendo Direct viewership figures cited in the thread are unverified numbers from the discussion itself and may differ from official figures.

  • Takeshi Gundan’s ‘Life-Risking’ Stunt Videos Spark Reactions: ‘The Showa Era Had Insane Energy’

A video thread about “Takeshi Gundan” popped up on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyou board and drew a wave of comments. Sparked by footage of the group risking life and limb on 1980s shows like “Genki ga Deru TV,” commenters got nostalgic about just how reckless variety shows used to be. Alongside remarks like “the Showa era clearly had zero concept of risk management,” posters kept bringing up specific old episodes — Hiromi’s burn stunt, Suidobashi Hakase’s fall, Takada Junji’s high-speed run on the Shuto Expressway, and more. Others were less charitable, arguing “the Gundan guys just aren’t funny at talking, so physical stunts were all they had” — leaving opinions on the segments pretty divided.

What's great about Owarai Ultra Quiz is that the rehearsals weren't run by an AD (assistant director) but by the actual director in charge of that segment. That's exactly why they could push the talent right up to the edge. Flip it around, though — it means the director had to go through something even crazier than what the comedians did, and only then would they let the talent do something a notch safer than that.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Takeshi Gundan is a group of young comedians who idolized Beat Takeshi and took on physically dangerous stunts on TV, mainly through the 1980s. One of their signature shows, “Genki ga Deru TV,” was known for its extreme, audience-participation-style segments. The thread split between two camps: those nostalgic for the “energy and fun” of old-school variety TV, and those taking a harsher view, arguing the performers “only did physical stunts because they couldn’t get laughs through talk.” Calls to scrap compliance rules altogether were met with pushback too, with some pointing out that “today’s TV stations don’t even have the budget to pull this kind of thing off anymore.” One point worth clarifying: commenters noted that directors reportedly tested the dangerous stunts themselves under harsher conditions before having the talent perform a comparatively safer version — suggesting the escalation wasn’t as unregulated or reckless as it might look. The thread also touched on how accident risks became more apparent once the Heisei era began, leading to tighter restrictions, though no specific accidents were pinned down in detail.
