  • Kobe and Awaji Island Join the Michelin Guide — 5ch Reignites the ‘Nothing Good to Eat in Nara’ Debate

Kobe and Awaji Island have been newly added to the areas covered by the “Michelin Guide.” They become the fifth region covered, following Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Nara, which are already included in the anonymous-inspection rating guide published by the French tire maker. On 5ch, the discussion drifted away from the actual Kobe/Awaji ratings and toward a long-running debate over the old saying “there’s nothing good to eat in Nara,” comparisons of star counts between Tokyo and Kansai, and the historical ties between Awaji Island and Tokushima.

“Kobe and Awaji Island” will be added to the coverage area of the “Michelin Guide,” the world-famous guidebook that rates restaurants and other establishments with stars.

The “Michelin Guide,” published by a French-headquartered tire maker that features roughly 17,000 restaurants and hotels worldwide, already covers “Tokyo,” “Kyoto,” “Osaka,” and “Nara” in Japan.

The star ratings take into account the quality of ingredients, the level of cooking technique, the polish and originality of the seasoning, and the overall consistency of the cuisine, with anonymous inspectors visiting and dining at restaurants to evaluate ingredient quality, technique, and more.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The “Michelin Guide” is a rating system published by a French tire company using anonymous inspectors, and with Kobe and Awaji Island now added, it becomes the fifth region covered in Japan, following Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Nara. Some in the thread pushed back with “why does a foreign tire company get to rate Japanese food,” though others pointed out that most inspectors for the Japan guide are actually Japanese, with the French company being only the parent organization. Much of the discussion focused less on the actual Kobe/Awaji ratings and more on the old saying “there’s nothing good to eat in Nara.” That phrase traces back to a line written by the Taisho-era novelist Shiga Naoya in an essay, and isn’t a reflection of Nara’s current food scene. There was also talk of how Awaji Island was historically part of the Tokushima domain during the Edo period, with some arguing that geographically it has stronger ties to Shikoku and the Kansai region than to Hyogo. On star counts, Tokyo is said to outnumber Kyoto and Osaka combined, fueling further debate over how the regions stack up.

  • Is It Pathetic to Live in a Tiny Studio “At Your Age”? 5channers Debate Housing—The Real Issue Is Cleaning Effort, Not Square Footage

A thread on 5ch’s Nanidemo Jikkyo G board asked whether it’s pathetic to be living in a 1K or studio apartment “at your age.” While some posters pushed back, arguing that “being single is the pathetic part—living in a 1K is still better than being a parasite still living with your parents (a ‘kodo-oji,’ slang for an adult man still mooching off his parents),” the discussion soon turned into an exchange of concrete housing details: a dilemma over choosing between a 1K at ¥30,000 and a 2K at ¥32,000 rent, a report of living in a 25-tatami-mat studio, and worries about eviction risk from a future rebuild while paying just ¥20,000 for a 1K. The view that cleaning effort matters more than room size also gained support.

    Isn't that pretty pathetic though?

Being single at your age is the pathetic part—living in a 1K or studio is normal, honestly better than being a parasite still mooching off your parents (a 'kodo-oji').

For reference, here's what ChatGPT said:

At Columbia University's undergraduate programs (the College, etc.), there's no system like Japanese universities have for announcing results by exam ranking (1st place, top of the class). American college admissions (holistic admissions) decide acceptance by comprehensively reviewing high school GPA, standardized test scores (or test-optional), essays, extracurricular activities, letters of recommendation, and more.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Mocking “1K/studio apartment living” is a perennial topic on 5ch, and this thread was no exception, turning into a debate less about square footage and more about life stage and values—comparisons with living at home with one’s parents (kodo-oji), and judgments about being single itself. A notable feature was the number of concrete, practical exchanges: a real dilemma over choosing between a 1K and a 2K in the ¥30,000 range (reply #25), a report of living in a 25-tatami-mat studio, and warnings about the risk of eviction for a rebuild when paying just ¥20,000 rent for a 1K. Opinions in the thread split along two main lines—”judge by cleaning effort rather than room size” versus “what matters most is being financially independent”—suggesting that a small room doesn’t automatically equal a pathetic life. Note that the boasts about family wealth and the story about admission to an overseas university that appear partway through the thread are exaggerations/jokes and shouldn’t be taken as fact.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Nanidemo Jikkyo G) thread “Guys living in a 1K or studio apartment at their age lolllllllllllllllllllllllll.”

  • Is the harsh criticism of ‘GQuuuuuuX’ fair? 5ch splits down the middle

A thread titled “Was it really bad enough to get this much hate?” popped up on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G board over Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX. Some posters praised the return of Amuro and Char, while others pointed to the abruptness of heroine Machu’s emotional arc, questioned the point of setting the story in a parallel world, and argued that the late-game “high-stakes mobile suit battle” arc was unnecessary. A few defended the show by citing rising overseas Gunpla sales, sparking a broader debate over how to separate a work’s quality from its commercial success.

    Background and points of debate

Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX is a 2025 entry in the Universal Century Gundam franchise directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki. Set in a parallel world following the events of Char’s Counterattack, it brings back original-series characters like Amuro and Char. In the thread, opinion split between critics who, comparing it to Witch from Mercury and Iron-Blooded Orphans, argued that the director’s and writers’ personal styles were too heavy-handed, and defenders who simply enjoyed the hype of seeing Amuro and Char return. The sharpest disagreement centered on heroine Machu’s emotional portrayal and whether the second-half “high-stakes mobile suit battle” arc was necessary. Some also pointed to rising overseas Gunpla sales as evidence the show was a “success,” though others pushed back on whether that has any bearing on the show’s actual quality — worth noting the discussion drifted somewhat off-topic at points.

  • Why Are ‘Naro-Style’ Isekai Reincarnation Stories So Formulaic? 5ch Weighs In

A discussion on 5ch about “isekai” (parallel-world reincarnation) stories known as “naro-kei” — named after the novel-posting site “Shosetsuka ni Naro” that spawned the genre — kicked off with a post noting that “there are basically only four plot patterns, yet over 1,000 titles use them.” Commenters pointed to the constant recycling of stories where the hero gets an overpowered “cheat skill” and dominates everyone, or the “just you wait” (zamaa) revenge arc where a noble family or party kicks the hero out only to regret it later. Others criticized the poor writing quality of the source novels and suggested the character templates are lifted wholesale from RPGs or Tolkien’s works. Opinion split between those who blame lazy, mass-produced writing on the creators and those who argue it’s simply supply meeting demand.

    1AnonymousSep 16, 2026 11:36
Why are there only like four patterns?
・Die, get reincarnated, receive a cheat skill, become OP
・Get kicked out of your noble family or party, then make them regret it (the classic "zamaa" revenge trope)

Honestly it'd be funnier if a regular creepy otaku just went back to being a kid and became an elite or a "paripi" (a trendy, sociable party-going type)

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Naro-kei” is a nickname for the body of work originating from the posting site “Shosetsuka ni Naro” (“Let’s Become a Novelist”). Since the 2010s, publishers like KADOKAWA have replicated whatever formula sells, causing a rapid surge in template-driven titles. In the thread, an explanation leaning toward personal attack — “it’s because the creators are creepy otaku” — clashes with a market-based explanation — “they’re mass-produced because they sell” — and the latter is closer to reality. Because Naro turns amateur online submissions into published books, the wide variance in the source novels’ writing quality is also a trait rarely seen in other genres. It’s worth noting that having “few patterns” is a phenomenon shared by other genres like sci-fi too, so it’s a common misconception to treat it as a flaw unique to naro-kei.

  • Myanmar Care Workers Surge in Japan as Vietnamese Turn Away — 5ch: ‘More Reliable Than Japan’s Own Bottom Rung’

The balance of power among foreign workers in Japan’s elder-care sector is shifting. The number of care workers on the “Specified Skilled Worker” visa has reached 67,871, with a surge in Myanmar nationals — whose remittances have jumped in real value — even as Vietnamese workers increasingly turn away from Japan.

Behind this is a currency gap. Even as the yen keeps weakening, remittances from Japan to Myanmar are now worth roughly three times what they used to be thanks to a plunge in the Myanmar kyat, while remittances to Vietnam have shrunk in value — 100,000 yen now converts to around $600, down from about $900 before the pandemic. On 5ch, opinions split over both the caliber of workers from different countries and Japan’s own working conditions.

In the near future, you or a family member may well end up living in a care facility — a realistic prospect for an aging Japan. Yet facilities are chronically short-staffed, and foreign care workers from countries like Myanmar and Nepal are increasingly counted on to fill the gap. We looked into the growing international competition to secure this workforce.

    ■ Myanmar now outpaces Vietnam as a source of care workers

Care facilities across Japan are increasingly hiring foreign staff. With 67,871 people already working in the care sector under the Specified Skilled Worker visa alone (*A), schools have sprung up in Myanmar and Nepal specifically to train workers headed for Japan. One such school is the Asian Unity Japan Technical Intern Training Centre (hereafter “Asian Unity”).

    Re: #179

"Care workers from some countries, like Vietnam, are already turning away from Japan. Their home economy is booming, and on top of that, sending 100,000 yen from Japan to Vietnam used to convert to about $900 before the pandemic — now, with the weaker yen, it's only around $600. Nepal, meanwhile, has seen its own currency weaken against the dollar too, so the remittance amount hasn't changed much from before the pandemic. In Myanmar's case, the exchange rate went from 1,000 kyat per dollar before the pandemic to 4,500 kyat per dollar now, meaning workers can send home more than three times as much as before."

Background and key points of this topic

Japan’s acceptance of foreign care workers rests on the “Specified Skilled Worker” system, which includes transfers from the former Technical Intern Training program, and the care sector alone reportedly employs 67,871 such workers. The article’s central point is that the rise and fall in numbers by country of origin isn’t about differences in worker quality — it’s mainly driven by exchange rates. Myanmar’s kyat has plunged from 1,000 to 4,500 per dollar, making remittances from Japan worth roughly three times what they used to be, while the weak yen has shrunk the dollar value of a 100,000-yen remittance to Vietnam from about $900 to around $600 — one factor behind Vietnamese workers’ cooling interest in Japan. Commenters were split over how to judge workers by country of origin as well as over Japan’s own working conditions, though some posts misjudged the per-capita GDP of the countries mentioned — a reminder to be wary of drawing simple links between income levels and the motivation to work abroad.

  • VIVANT Director Katsuo Fukuzawa Broke Assistant Director’s Bone in Power-Harassment Incident, Gets Off With a Slap on the Wrist — 5ch: “Fuji TV Got Trashed Just for Yelling”

TBS drama VIVANT Season 2’s set became the scene of an incident, according to Weekly Bunshun: director Katsuo Fukuzawa shoved an assistant director off a stepladder, causing a fracture that will take a month to heal. Per Bunshun, TBS treated the matter as classified information and handed down only a light punishment. Fukuzawa is also known as the great-great-grandson of Yukichi Fukuzawa (the historical figure on Japan’s 10,000-yen bill). On 5ch, discussion centered on exactly what happened — “he didn’t punch him, he knocked the ladder out from under him” — alongside a strong sense of unfairness: “Fuji TV got dragged through the mud just for yelling at an actress, but TBS breaks someone’s bone and gets away with a light punishment?” A few posts, however, seemed to excuse the violence outright, leaving opinions split.

VIVANT Season 2, the smash-hit sequel following the further adventures of undercover agent Yusuke Nogi, has been a huge success. But behind the scenes, harassment by the director was reportedly rampant on set — serious enough that TBS treated it as classified information. And then, the incident finally happened!

It happened last December, at TBS’s Midoriyama Studio in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. During a rehearsal for the hit drama VIVANT, an angry shout suddenly rang out across the set.

“How many times do I have to tell you the same thing?!”

Doesn't count since the victim wasn't a woman

Background and Key Points of This Story

Under Japan’s power-harassment prevention law (a 2020 amendment to the Act on Comprehensive Promotion of Labor Measures), employers are legally required to take steps to prevent workplace harassment. Film sets, however, are considered an industry where a closed hierarchy topped by the director tends to persist, largely shielded from outside scrutiny. A fracture requiring a month to heal is serious enough that, depending on the exact circumstances, it could amount to criminal assault — but the reporting so far rests solely on Bunshun’s own investigation, and it’s not yet clear how TBS will explain the details of its disciplinary response. Within the thread, descriptions of what actually happened varied from post to post — some said he “kicked the ladder,” others said he “shoved” it — so the facts should be checked against Bunshun’s original article text. Many commenters also drew comparisons to Fuji TV’s past scandal, but how severe a punishment turns out to be depends heavily on the specifics of each case and the company’s own response policy, so such simple comparisons have their limits.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Sports & Entertainment News+) thread “[Bunshun] TBS Is Covering Up VIVANT Director Katsuo Fukuzawa’s (62) “Fracture Power-Harassment” — Month-Long Injury, Ridiculously Light Punishment [Ailuropoda melanoleuca★].”

  • New PS5 exclusive Wolverine goes viral after video shows it can be beaten without touching the controller

A video capturing moments in Sony’s new action game Wolverine where the game keeps progressing without the player touching the controller has gone viral on social media, sparking discussion on 5ch’s hardware/industry (Geha) board. Early comments suggested it might be due to an accessibility feature, but posters in the thread pointed out that hands-free progression still happened even with every assist feature switched off, leading many to conclude this couldn’t simply be chalked up to a settings mistake. Posts also drew comparisons to the game’s reported $300+ million development budget and the earlier FF16 PR controversy, with the discussion extending to comparisons with Forza Horizon 6’s self-driving feature.

I gave up on Seasons and just cleared it by grabbing all the treasure cars, mascots, and every road
Gave up on collecting every scoreboard though

Background and key points of this discussion

Auto-QTE is usually included as an accessibility feature for players who find manual controls difficult. The point of contention this time was whether hands-free progression still happens even with that feature turned off — within the thread, opinions split between those saying “it’s off by default” and those saying “it happened even with every assist turned off,” and no consensus was reached. Behind this lies a string of controversies surrounding Sony’s PS5 exclusive lineup: the backlash over FF16’s PR video, the early shutdown of the big-budget live-service title Concord, Kojima Productions’ apparent split from Sony, and other incidents that have piled up over the past few years — much of which shaped the reaction to this video as “here we go again.” It’s worth noting that what setting actually caused this has yet to be verified at the source, and the facts aren’t fully settled based on 5ch posts alone.

  • Which Group Next for Hikari Yoshida and Rua Hattori? Hello! Project Trainees Spark Fan Debate

On the Hello! Project subforum, fans traded speculation over which group trainees Hikari Yoshida and Rua Hattori might be promoted to next. Pointing to the opening left by Kirari Hashisako’s graduation from Tsubaki Factory, the state of ANGERME a year and a half after Nagano joined, and the fact that both trainees hail from Aichi Prefecture, posters floated several candidate groups, including ANGERME, Juice=Juice, and Tsubaki Factory. Others pushed back, noting that “the era of promoting everyone is over” and that promotion itself isn’t guaranteed — leaving opinion split.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Hello! Project trainees are typically promoted to full member status after passing skills assessment tests, but in recent years not everyone makes the cut — as one poster in the thread put it, “the era of promoting everyone is over.” For the two trainees discussed here, fans cited concrete circumstances — an opening left by a senior member’s graduation, and matching age/hometown patterns with existing members — as grounds for naming candidate groups, making this more than idle wishful thinking, since it’s grounded in actual open slots. That said, none of these comments come from the trainees themselves or from an official Hello! Project announcement — they remain fan speculation. Opinions in the thread are split over whether ANGERME, Juice=Juice, or Tsubaki Factory is most likely, so this should not be taken as a settled fact.

  • Why Do People Use ¥200,000 Smartphones? 5ch Says: ‘It’s All About Showing Off’

A thread asking why people use pricey smartphones in the ¥200,000 (roughly $1,300) range drew 41 replies. Some gave practical reasons — taking photos and video at events where filming is allowed, or prioritizing camera performance and image quality — while plenty of others bluntly called it “vanity” or “flexing.” Others argued the phones aren’t really that expensive once you factor in payment plans (“residual-value credit keeps the monthly cost low,” “it’s cheap once you break it down per day of use”) or how long they keep the device. Meanwhile, some pushed back with stories of budget phones in the ¥10,000 range feeling sluggish and frustrating, turning the discussion into more than a simple expensive-vs-cheap debate.

The successor to a model that cost about ¥130,000 five years ago is now nearly double the price, and if you want to keep the storage you used to top up with an SD card, going to 1TB tacks on another ¥50,000 or so.

I bought an OPPO phone but everything runs so slow it's unusable, and the battery drains fast too.
In the end I just set it up with a Rakuten Mobile eSIM and use it as a router instead.

    This, exactly.
Even when the specs are more than enough for what you actually do, a cheap phone still irritates you with little lags in everyday use.

I make ¥6.5 million a year and I still can't bring myself to spend ¥200,000 on a phone.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

High-end smartphone prices have climbed sharply in recent years, and the thread included a concrete example: a model that cost about ¥130,000 five years ago now has a successor priced nearly double, and matching the storage you used to get by adding an SD card means jumping to 1TB — tacking on roughly another ¥50,000. The ¥200,000 price point usually points to top-tier iPhone or Galaxy models — the “Ultra” or “Pro Max” tier — and some posters cited camera performance, video shooting, or attending photo-friendly idol/voice-actor events as their reason for owning one. On the other hand, the spread of “residual-value credit” plans, which let people carry an expensive handset without feeling the full monthly cost upfront, has also blurred people’s sense of what these phones really cost. In the end, the thread’s real fault line came down to a values question — vanity/one-upmanship versus genuine practical need — without either side reaching a clear conclusion. A lot of the back-and-forth turned into people sniping at each other over income and spending power, but that’s just typical 5ch thread heat, and should be read separately from the actual facts about pricing and features.

  • Docomo Leaked 340,000 Users’ Data to Amazon US Without Consent — 5ch: ‘Like Hell They Deleted It, LOL’

On September 15, NTT Docomo announced that it had shared the phone numbers and contract plan names of roughly 340,000 users with Amazon.com’s Japanese subsidiary without their consent. The affected users are some of those who signed up online between April 21 and August 20 for a phone plan that includes Amazon membership perks; the cause was a configuration error that meant the consent-confirmation notice for sharing personal data was never displayed during sign-up. Docomo says Amazon deleted the data by September 12, but on 5ch, users expressed shock that such a system for sharing phone numbers and plan names externally even existed, voiced skepticism about whether the data was “really” deleted, and repeatedly compared the incident to other companies’ data breaches and past personal-information leaks.

    Yomiuri Shimbun Online

NTT Docomo revealed on the 15th that it had shared the personal information of roughly 340,000 users with Amazon.com’s Japanese subsidiary without their consent. What was shared without permission was users’ phone numbers and the names of their contracted phone plans. The cause was a configuration error on Docomo’s end, and the company says Amazon deleted the data by the 12th.

Any place offering a service that partners with an outside company to do something like this — you should assume they're sharing some kind of personal data externally.
You can't link accounts together without sharing personal info.

They probably tried to get some cloud service or AWS AI to do something and accidentally uploaded a file with personal data in it.
    Yeah, that's just dumb.

If you link with Amazon you get 1% points back on purchases over 5,000 yen, so anyone who already has both accounts is probably linked up already anyway

This is exactly why linking accounts is scary.
The more services you link together,

If you couldn't proceed with signing up for this bundled plan without agreeing to it (I forget the exact numbers, but I think this monthly discount might be cheaper than Amazon's own monthly rate — though Amazon's own annual payment, or even YouTube's annual plan, might actually work out cheaper than this) then sure, they should have to disclose that. But either way, the data gets shared all the same, doesn't it?

    Re: #199
My mistake. Since in Re: #1 Amazon had already deleted the data, it might have been possible to proceed with sign-up even without giving consent.

Background and Key Points of This Story

This unauthorized data sharing wasn’t the result of an outside attack — it’s attributed to a configuration error on the sign-up page for the phone plan Docomo offers in partnership with Amazon (the one with discounted membership fees), which meant the consent-confirmation text for sharing personal data never displayed. Those affected were some of the users who signed up for this plan between April 21 and August 20, and only phone numbers and contract plan names were shared; Docomo says addresses and payment information were not included. On the thread, some posts noted that this kind of business partnership isn’t unusual in itself, and that “data sharing necessary for the service” and “failing to obtain consent” are separate issues — while plenty of other voices were skeptical of taking the claim that “Amazon deleted the data” at face value. Many posts also compared the incident to other personal-data cases, such as June’s leak involving My Number cards, framing it not as an isolated scandal but as part of a broader distrust toward the risks of linking personal data with outside partners — a nuance that doesn’t come through in the article text alone.
