  • Wolverine’s Metascore Jumps from 6.3 to 7.0 Amid New-Account 10/10 Ratings Flood — Fans Call It ‘Unnatural’

The Metacritic user score for Marvel’s Wolverine, the PS5-exclusive title developed by Insomniac Games, has been swinging wildly over a short period — 6.4 → 6.7 → 6.4 → 6.3 → 6.8 → 7.0 — sparking discussion on 5ch’s “Hardware/Industry (Geha)” board. Posters noted that every time the score dipped, a surge of 10/10 ratings from brand-new accounts would push it back up, and the thread increasingly floated the theory that this reflects “organized manipulation by Sony.” Around the same time, the score for the Chinese game Wan Zi Qian Hong (万紫千紅), seen as a rival title, also dropped from 9.3 to 9.0, leading some to speculate — without evidence — that it was retaliatory downvoting. Who exactly is behind it remains unidentified, and opinions in the thread are divided.

Thousands of 10/10 ratings from new accounts posted in just a few days — don't you think Sony's overdoing it here?
Meanwhile Wan Zi Qian Hong has been hit with a barrage of suspiciously low reviews, dropping all the way from 9.3 to 9.0.
    2AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:36
Sony is a cancer on this industry — it should be wiped out.
    3AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:37
This is exactly the kind of trick they pull to get people to buy shovelware — no wonder their games sell so badly they had to pull out of Steam.
    5AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:39
    6.4
    ↓
    6.7 (Sony's new-account 10/10 bombing campaign begins)
    ↓
6.4 (Sony's rigged scores get deleted)
    ↓
    6.3
    ↓
6.8 (an enraged Sony unleashes new accounts dropping 9s and 10s)
    ↓
7.0 (the instant it hits 7.0, new accounts giving 8s and 9s spike)

That's the timeline. Even while low scores kept coming in during that same window, they kept spamming new-account 10/10s hard enough to override all of it — that's not normal.

    Isn't this insanely bad??
Why isn't this getting bigger overseas — accounts endlessly dumping 10/10s like this?
    7AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:39
They rig the score and the best they can manage is 7.0 lol
    9AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:40
They pulled the same thing with Steam accounts for Marathon.
Since Metascore submissions are free, bots can manipulate it as much as they want.
    10AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:41
The fact that there are so few mid-range votes makes it obvious this is being brigaded.
    11AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:42
They can pump the score up all they want, everyone already knows it's a bad game.
    12AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:42
Seriously, it's nothing but accounts that have only ever given Wolverine a 10 — lol.
If they've got time to pull off manipulation like this, they should spend it making a better game.

I checked hundreds of the 10/10 accounts and every single one is brand new — that's wild. Not one of them is a genuinely passionate 10/10 review from someone who actually enjoyed the game.

We don't actually know if it's Sony, but

Sony's got a track record of pulling this kind of manipulation before, multiple times,
    so of course they're suspected.
They've even gotten caught doing it in obvious ways before lol, they really don't think it through.

    18AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:48
Players are clipping through walls constantly and the game's riddled with other problems — the basics aren't even there, yet they're desperate to push the score up anyway.
    19AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:50

    Ah!!
    I've got it!!

I thought it was odd that the shilling slowed down once it got around 7.0, but

there's a contract clause where Marvel penalizes them if the user score drops below 7.0!!!

That's why they're so desperate to defend that 7.0 line!!!

Assuming Insomniac would be the one penalized,
if it were actually Insomniac staff doing this themselves, there'd be no reason to also tank Wan Zi Qian Hong's (FE) score,
so I really can't see this as anything other than Sony — or rather SIE — behind it.

If manipulation like this gets exposed, it's not just wasted effort — it backfires, it's a double-edged sword.
That's exactly why it's usually done through third-country or underground communities, using disguises and impersonation.
The companies that do it openly and brazenly are the ones from countries where ethics and international norms are broken — like China or Israel lol.

This almost feels like it's begging people to go blame Sony.
I mean, sure, Sony has a track record so it's no surprise they're suspected, but keep that other possibility in the back of your mind too.

    Re: #97
The major retailer chart had it sitting at a 60-something ranking, which looks like it's right at Sony's rock bottom.
There's been no early sales report at all.

There's this vague 6-million-unit quota tied to the Marvel deal,
and development costs so high that anything less than full price puts it in the red.

If this desperation gets bad enough,
Marvel might end up refusing to license any future games besides Spider-Man.
    107AnonymousSep 21, 2026 21:57
    Re: #97
Of course it's different from their in-house projects — Marvel's involved and there's a sales quota attached.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Anyone can post a Metacritic user score just by registering an account, and since the platform doesn’t disclose its aggregation methods or fraud-detection criteria, a sudden flood of very high or very low scores in a short window naturally invites suspicion of manipulation. In this case, no evidence has been presented that Sony’s head office (SIE) is directly involved — the thread itself offers several competing theories, from “maybe it’s Insomniac” to “maybe it’s a third-party overseas community,” without reaching a firm conclusion. The claim that “there’s a contract clause penalizing them if the user score drops below 7.0” is likewise unsourced speculation. Whether the wave of negative reviews hitting the Chinese game Wan Zi Qian Hong around the same time was retaliation or just coincidence also hasn’t been confirmed. The score’s wild swings are an objective fact verifiable on Metacritic itself, but most of the explanations for why it’s happening are speculation from the 5ch thread — worth keeping that distinction in mind while reading.

  • Biggest Debate Over Anime’s Most Tear-Jerking Scene Ever: 5ch Weighs In With “I’m Tired, Patrasche”

A thread asking “What’s the most tear-jerking scene in anime history?” popped up on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G (Live/Anything Goes) board. Nominees ranged widely — “I’m tired, Patrasche” from Dog of Flanders, the clubroom scene after the school festival in K-On!, CLANNAD, Violet Evergarden, Toradora!, Re:Zero, Slam Dunk, and Trigun — with each poster championing whatever title hit them personally. One post naming K-On! sparked a mini-argument by claiming that “if that scene doesn’t make you cry, it proves you’ve never been in a club,” splitting opinion in the thread.

    Background and Key Points

Threads debating the “most tear-jerking scene ever” are a recurring staple on 5ch, and the titles that come up vary widely depending on each poster’s generation. This time the lineup spanned everything from 1975’s Dog of Flanders to the 2010s’ Violet Evergarden. The friction in the thread came from several posts that named a specific scene and then flatly declared “if you don’t cry at this, you just lack life experience” — a stance that drew notable pushback around both K-On! and CLANNAD. There was also a correction regarding the Slam Dunk scene cited as iconic: a poster pointed out that the moment in question was actually never animated and only appears in the original manga, highlighting how the “famous scenes” people remember don’t always match what was actually adapted.

  • UK First-Week Sales: Wolverine Triples Death Stranding 2’s Numbers, Fire Emblem’s Fortune’s Weave Down 26% from Three Houses

The UK’s weekly physical software chart became a hot topic on 5channel’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. Marvel’s new game “Wolverine” reportedly opened at roughly three times the first-week sales of “Death Stranding 2” — but since Death Stranding 2 itself had a weak launch, down 66% from its predecessor, opinions were split on whether that was really a fair comparison. Meanwhile, the new Fire Emblem title “Fortune’s Weave” sold 26% below “Three Houses,” though some argued it was actually holding up well once you factor in the difference in console install base between the two launches.

Pretty sure it's not on one of those key cards (a card that just unlocks a download rather than holding the full game), so it saves storage space, and there's no physical voucher either.

    This one's worrying too —

Fortune's Weave's sales are down 26% from Three Houses

"Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave's UK launch sales (physical) are 26% below Fire Emblem: Three Houses, and broadly similar to Fire Emblem: Engage. Seems pretty decent"

    Re: #95
Three Houses was a long-tail hit that racked up numbers over time.
Engage was probably selling pretty well in its first week too.

    Background and Talking Points

This kind of UK first-week data is compiled by industry watchers from GfK’s physical sales charts, and since actual unit sales aren’t publicly disclosed, posters in the thread noted that these numbers can really only be discussed as relative comparisons between titles. Death Stranding 2 already had a rough showing, down 66% from its predecessor, so stacking a “3x” comparison on top of that looks flashy — but the impression changes a lot depending on the baseline being compared against. As for the new Fire Emblem title, a 26% drop from Three Houses looks like a step back at face value, but since Switch’s install base was far smaller when Three Houses launched, opinion in the thread was split on whether a straight sales comparison is even fair. Posters also pointed to factors that don’t show up on the charts, like the ratio of physical to digital sales — which is exactly why it’s hard to draw firm conclusions from a single first-week snapshot like this.

  • Switch 2’s Fire Emblem: A Thousand Blooms Takes 140 Hours to Clear — Bigger Than Dragon Quest VII

Regarding the new simulation RPG Fire Emblem: A Thousand Blooms, a Switch 2 exclusive, a walkthrough site’s estimate of clear time became a hot topic on 5ch’s Hardware & Industry (Geha) board. Even a speedrun-style playthrough done specifically to build the walkthrough reportedly took 140 hours — surpassing the roughly 70 hours for the 3DS version of Dragon Quest VII and the roughly 100 hours for Persona 5. Opinions were divided between surprise that a 140-hour clear report had appeared so soon after launch, and speculation over how long an actual playthrough — including repeat runs — would really take.

If even a speedrun for the walkthrough site took 140 hours, does a normal playthrough run something like 180-200 hours?
This sets a kind of benchmark for how much content Nintendo packs into its ¥9,980 premium-priced games — but if Xenoblade gets bumped up to ¥9,980 and tries to match this scale, the padding and busywork could get brutal.

Coming from the PS5, which has almost no exclusives left compared to the PS4 era, that just sounds hollow.

    Background and Key Points

It’s worth noting that the “140 hours” figure is a walkthrough site’s estimate from testing the shortest possible route, not the time an average player would feel they spent. Like Fire Emblem: Three Houses, this title has a three-part structure with multiple protagonist routes, so clear time varies a lot depending on whether you play through every route. While some want this level of volume from a ¥9,980 Nintendo title, the thread showed no consensus — there was skepticism that a 140-hour clear report appeared so soon after launch, and disagreement over how to estimate time assuming repeat playthroughs. A point readers can easily get wrong: this figure isn’t the “minimum time needed to clear” the game, but playtime under the special conditions of building a walkthrough.

Sparked by a Yahoo! Some posters argued The Mist deserves a permanent spot in the hall of fame, while others complained the thread was turning into a mere “name-recognition ranking” skewed toward famous titles — sparking disagreement over what actually counts as “traumatic.”

    Background and Talking Points

The original article was a Yahoo! News feature on “horror and suspense movies to watch when you want a good chill,” leading with Climax. On 5ch, this sparked a wave of people sharing their own “traumatic movie” stories — everything from vivid scene-by-scene memories like the hammer scene in Misery, to the names of directors like Gaspar Noé and Lars von Trier, both known for films that leave viewers feeling genuinely unwell. Where opinions split was over complaints that the thread was turning into a mere “name-recognition ranking” dominated by famous titles, contrasted with posters pushing more obscure picks like Aniara and The Call. There was also discussion of films like Speak No Evil, where opinions differ sharply between the original (Scandinavian) version and its Hollywood remake. Worth noting: there’s no official definition or criteria for a “traumatic movie” — this is simply a list based on each poster’s personal, subjective experience.

In his rookie year with the Nippon-Ham Fighters, in February 2005, Yu Darvish was reported by a tabloid photo magazine for underage smoking and visiting a pachinko parlor during Okinawa spring training, and received an indefinite suspension.

This is just standard practice for celebrities in America.
Ohtani has his own foundation and does charity work too.
MLB players in particular donate a ton.
You never hear about this kind of thing in soccer though.
Do guys like Kubo or Mitoma donate at all?
    88AnonymousSep 21, 2026 23:04
    Re: #81
Even top Japanese players like Kubo and Mitoma only make a few hundred million yen a year, so don't compare them to MLB players pulling in billions.
They probably donated something to Kumamoto earthquake relief or whatever, I don't really know.
    87AnonymousSep 21, 2026 23:02
Darvish is different, but rich Americans' donations are usually about tax savings.
They go looking for other people's misfortune to throw money at.
And the recipients know it too, so they take the money without much gratitude.
    92AnonymousSep 21, 2026 23:09
    Re: #87
You only get a deduction, so donating still leaves you with less money in hand.
In Japan, with a tax-credit type donation, your net take-home stays the same.
And with furusato nozei (the hometown tax donation program) you actually get goods back, so you come out ahead.
    It's basically like begging.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Darvish has played for the Padres since 2018 and is known for his ongoing community contributions through the team’s charitable activities. The facility reported on this time was established in 1961, and his support is described as carrying on the wishes of the team’s former owner. In the thread, opinions were divided over the merits of forfeiting a salary as a method, the reasoning behind choosing to donate in the U.S. rather than to disaster-affected areas of Japan, and the size of the tax burden involved — though the specific tax figures and mechanisms cited varied from post to post, and no official confirmation had been established as of this article. Some posts also referenced past events, such as the 2005 reports of underage smoking, but this is a previously reported, already-known fact, and this article adds no new claims about it. Comparisons of donation amounts with other athletes like Shohei Ohtani, Takefusa Kubo, and Kaoru Mitoma also came up, but it should be noted these aren’t simple apples-to-apples comparisons given the differences in contract scale and systems between sports.

  • DaiGo Reveals His Trick for Stopping a Shinkansen Seatmate from Staring: ‘Write a Fake Assassination Plot and They’ll Move’

Mentalist DaiGo (real name Keigo Matsumaru) posted on X that he was annoyed by a fellow passenger repeatedly glancing at him on the Shinkansen, and revealed his own homemade fix for making the staring stop: writing out a realistic-looking assassination plot somewhere the person could see it, which made them get up and move away. The post was picked up by 5ch’s Geinou/Sports News+ board, drawing a mix of amazed laughter and mockery, along with accusations that the story was made up (‘usomatsu,’ 5ch slang for suspiciously convenient anecdotes) and references to DaiGo’s past controversies — leaving reactions sharply divided.

Background and Key Points of This Story

DaiGo, whose real name is Keigo Matsumaru, has built a career sharing psychological techniques through books and videos, and drew criticism in 2022 over comments he made about homeless people. The ‘controversy’ referenced in the thread is believed to point to that incident. This latest post is simply DaiGo’s own account of his experience on X (formerly Twitter), with no third-party confirmation provided. The term ‘usomatsu,’ which came up repeatedly on 5ch, is site-native slang used to cast doubt on the truthfulness of anecdotal posts, often applied regardless of the poster’s actual intent. One point readers could easily misread: the ‘assassination plot note’ isn’t an actual criminal threat — by DaiGo’s own account, it was just a fictional stunt used to make the person next to him look away.

  • GTO finale to feature Shun Oguri, Hidenori Tokuyama and more — former students reunite as Onizuka faces his biggest crisis

It’s been announced that Shun Oguri and Hidenori Tokuyama will appear in the finale of GTO, the Monday 10pm drama starring Takashi Sorimachi. This marks the first continuous TV adaptation of the original manga in 28 years, and actors who once played students taught by Onizuka are reuniting for the occasion. On the thread, someone asked “Who’s Tokuyama?”, prompting a string of replies citing his Kamen Rider and other drama credits to explain. Talk also swirled around how Oguri came to join — some said it was planned from the start, others claimed Oguri’s side made a reverse offer — while comments split between griping about sluggish ratings and vowing to tune in just for the finale.

GTO finale to feature Shun Oguri, Hidenori Tokuyama and others — former students reunite as Onizuka faces a crisis

A preview for the next episode of GTO, the Kansai TV/Fuji TV Monday 10pm drama starring Takashi Sorimachi, has revealed that Shun Oguri and Hidenori Tokuyama will appear in the final episode.

GTO is based on the manga of the same name by Toru Fujisawa (published in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine KC). It’s a school drama about Eikichi Onizuka — “Great Teacher Onizuka,” a former biker-gang member turned teacher — who tackles student and school problems head-on with his unconventional methods. Starring Sorimachi, the series returns as a continuous TV drama for the first time in 28 years, depicting Onizuka now in his 50s.

    Of course I do, but I'm a binge-watcher.
I don't have a TV so I use TVer instead.
Wish they'd drop episodes all at once, though.
Something like Vivant only has up to episode 3 streaming, so I can't binge it until they release more.

Right now on Netflix I'm watching Fumo Chitai (Barren Zone) from 2009 for terrestrial dramas.
I don't have an NHK contract but I'm watching Aoi Tokugawa Sandai on NHK On Demand.

On TVer I'm only watching GTO, Sokomade Iinkai, and Seigi no Mikata.
Starting next month I think I'll just watch Aibou.
    20AnonymousSep 21, 2026 23:57

I dropped it after a boring first episode, but if Oguri's in it maybe I'll watch the finale.
    24AnonymousSep 21, 2026 23:59
These days, just having a star pop up in a decent role isn't going to move the numbers one bit.
Even on Netflix's Gas Ningen, someone like Yutaka Takenouchi showed up in a role so ridiculous it was laugh-out-loud funny.
It's really a question of whether the production side even cares.
    26AnonymousSep 21, 2026 23:59
Maybe it's Onizuka's teaching that's to blame for basically only Oguri making it big.

    Background and talking points

GTO is a school-life manga by Toru Fujisawa; the 1998 TV drama adaptation was a ratings hit at the time, and many of its cast — including Takashi Sorimachi as well as Shun Oguri, Hidenori Tokuyama, and AKIRA — went on to build bigger careers afterward. This time around, Sorimachi returns to star in the first continuous TV adaptation in 28 years, with Eikichi Onizuka, now in his 50s, once again fighting the good fight as a teacher. The thread mostly revolved around what happened to the original cast members since then, with opinions split over who “made it” and who didn’t. No specific ratings figures appear in the article itself, but several commenters noted the show seems to be struggling, with some speculating that the star-studded guest appearances are meant to make up for it. That a fair number of posters didn’t recognize Hidenori Tokuyama reflects just how much time — 28 years — has passed since the original 1998 broadcast.

This back-and-forth between Hirano Remi and the announcer is said to be a recurring bit on the show, and 5ch users split between those who dismissed it as “scripted pro wrestling” and those who took it as “she’s genuinely in trouble.” As a broadcaster funded by license fees, NHK officially does not permit personal advertising within its programs, so the announcer’s warning this time was in line with that stated policy. At the same time, some posts pointed to the ambiguous line between this and NHK’s own promotional activities — like the backstop ads during baseball broadcasts or the repeated plugs for NHK Plus — meaning the thread went beyond simple reactions to a “running gag” and developed into broader questions about NHK’s own advertising rules as a public broadcaster.

  • ‘High School Quiz’ Crown Goes to Nada High — 5ch: “Nada’s the Only Safety School for Tsukukoma Kids”

The 46th National High School Quiz Championship, aired on Nippon TV on September 21, crowned Nada High School of Hyogo Prefecture as the top school out of 5,984 nationwide entrants. The competition moved through stages across the country, including a video-based three-choice base-running challenge at Yokohama Stadium and the event’s signature muddy true-or-false quiz at Odawara Castle. On 5ch, threads about the winning Nada High buzzed with elite-school one-upmanship (“Nada’s the only school that can serve as a safety school for Tsukukoma kids”), debate over whether the show has shifted into a showdown between high-deviation-score prep schools, and nostalgic comments recalling the old days when students camped out overnight to compete — all part of a broader discussion about how the show has changed over the years.

The “quiz Koshien,” the 46th National High School Quiz Championship, aired on Nippon TV on the 21st. Nada High School of Hyogo Prefecture came out on top among 5,984 schools nationwide.

The national final kicked off with the first round’s youthful “video three-choice base-running” stage, where contestants sprinted around the diamond at Yokohama Stadium, before moving through various stages across Japan. At Odawara Castle, the show once again carried out its signature “muddy circle-or-cross quiz.”

For a while they leaned harder into luck-based elements to give non-elite schools a shot, but that got a bad reputation so they reverted.

Yeah, that's my point — if they tried that same old-school vibe today, eliminating half the field with rock-paper-scissors at Narita Airport, viewers unfamiliar with the history would probably complain.

Back in the day, even the regional qualifiers alone drew over 10,000 high schoolers to the venue — it was a huge event. Riding the last or first train with two friends, only to lose on the first question and head straight home — that was youth.

By the way, this year Nippon TV had this show while TV Asahi ran a 3-hour 'Qsama' and Fuji TV ran a 2-hour 'Neptune League' at the same time — three quiz shows overlapping. Sounds like they were fighting over ratings.

Nada only became a super-elite prep school through accelerated curricula starting in the 1960s, so it makes sense for anyone who graduated college before that era.

Bring back the 'brains, brawn, and luck' concept. What made it fun was being able to make up for lacking brains with physical strength or luck.

Nada's the only school Tsukukoma kids can use as a safety school. Apparently it's a yearly tradition at Tsukukoma Junior High's entrance ceremony for kids to one-up each other over how many points they missed Nada by.

    Re: #77
The reverse happens too — Tokyo kids who take the Nada exam, pass, and then don't go. Where the exam fee and hotel money for that came from is… (let's not get into it)
The real exam kings triple-pass Nada, Kaisei, and Tsukukoma, then go to Tsukukoma anyway.
    78AnonymousSep 21, 2026 23:18
Tsukukoma, Azabu, and Seiko Gakuin don't seem like the type to care about this kind of quiz show.
    84AnonymousSep 21, 2026 23:27
    Re: #78
Azabu actually appeared before on the high school version of SASUKE, the physical obstacle-course show.

Seiko Gakuin (Yokohama), meanwhile, entered the pretty niche 'News & Trivia Koshien' (National Junior/Senior High School Quiz Tournament) as a joint team with Osaka's Seiko Gakuin — a completely different school that just happens to share the same pronunciation — and they actually won.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“High School Quiz” is a long-running Nippon TV program built around a format that’s continued for years: regional qualifiers feeding into a national tournament. In the thread, many commenters testified that in the past, even the regional qualifiers alone drew crowds of over 10,000 high schoolers — a grassroots, community-rooted event where participants pulled all-nighters and camped out. Alongside that, there were pointed observations that in recent years the show has taken on more of the character of a showdown between high-deviation-score prep schools, and the shift in the show’s overall character became the central topic of debate. It was also noted that Nada High School only became a super-elite prep school through accelerated curricula starting in the 1960s, meaning it wouldn’t necessarily ring a bell for graduates from before that era — worth keeping in mind that “never heard of Nada” isn’t simply the same as “uneducated.” The same day also saw TV Asahi’s “Qsama” and Fuji TV’s “Neptune League” air, meaning three quiz shows were competing for viewers at once — another point that came up in the discussion.
