  • No Song Titles on the Menu Screen? 5ch: “That’s Just Trash, Come On”

A thread titled “Beatmania is honestly way too crappy a game” popped up on 5ch’s Newsspeed VIP board, kicking off with complaints that the menu screen doesn’t display song titles at all — only genre and difficulty. The discussion then broadened into a debate about the series as a whole, with posters citing Konami’s shoot-’em-up series “Gradius” for comparison, suggesting the original was accessible to everyone while the sequels narrowed their focus toward hardcore fans. Some pushed back with specific sales figures, and while no consensus was reached, the thread settled into a familiar general take shared across rhythm games and shooters alike: “difficulty inflation widens the gap between newcomers and veterans.”

Honestly it's wild this is what got rhythm games popular. ("ガイジ" — harsh internet slang for "moron")
If you love rhythm games that much just go drum on your desk lol

The reason a game that got THAT popular fell out of favor is the same as Gradius

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Beatmania is the original music game Konami launched in 1997, spawning numerous spin-off series since, including IIDX. The complaint raised in the thread about missing song titles reflects a real quirk of the song-select screen, which shows only genre and difficulty — a usability issue that makes it harder for beginners to pick songs. Meanwhile, the exchange about Gradius used posts citing sales figures of “1 million units” for the original and “500,000” for the third installment as evidence, but it’s worth noting these numbers come from individual posters’ memories rather than confirmed statistics presented as fact in this article. The discussion centers on two main points: whether the original was made for everyone while its sequels narrowed toward a hardcore audience, and the broader claim that rhythm games and shooters decline as difficulty inflation widens the gap between newcomers and veterans. The latter point tends to come up regardless of genre, with some posts even citing the bullet-hell style of the Touhou series as an example.

  • ‘Using Your Turn Signal Is Uncool’ Theory Sparks Backlash — 5ch: ‘Then Don’t Drive’

It started with a wave of social media posts claiming “using your turn signal is uncool,” and the debate soon spread to 5channel. When one poster admitted they only flick the signal on after the light turns green, others fired back: “Why wouldn’t you signal at all?” and “At least start a little before it turns green.” Meanwhile, some defended holding off, citing reasons like “I hate having it blink the whole time the light’s red” or “I want to save the bulb.” The discussion eventually expanded to cover sequential turn signals and even the merits of the licensing system itself.

    Nah, that's not it.
They don't even realize they're being a nuisance.
They just figure they're a good driver, that's all.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The post that sparked this article — “using your turn signal is uncool” — humorously voices the mindset of drivers who hold off on signaling. Japan’s Road Traffic Act requires drivers to signal in advance before turning or changing lanes, and failing to signal, or signaling too late, can result in a citation. In the thread, the practical question of “when to signal” got tangled up with the etiquette question of “some people just don’t signal at all,” leading to moments where the two sides talked past each other. The discussion also touched on the reputation of sequential turn signals and equipment on newer car models, broadening well beyond a simple critique of manners.

  • Oda Sakura’s Graduation Concert: All Eyes on FC Presale Rule Letting Non-Members Join as Companions

FC presale registration for MORNING MUSUME。’26’s Oda Sakura graduation concert opened on September 24, and it’s been revealed that while the applicant must be an FC member, the companion they bring doesn’t have to be. On the thread, this drew comparisons to Juice=Juice, which sold out all 8,000 seats in FC first-round presale alone without any such companion allowance — some pointed to it as proof of a gap in drawing power between the groups, while others were simply glad they can now attend the graduation show with non-member parents or friends. At the same time, some questioned the setup, since under the same lottery system, it’s still possible for the member applicant themselves to lose out.

    3AnonymousSep 24, 2026 17:00
For this presale, admission will be via electronic ticket using an e-stamp system.
You'll need a smartphone that can use the 'MOALA Ticket' e-ticket service.

For this presale, applicants are required to link their MOALA account. Companions may apply even if they are not FC members.

    Re: #81
BEYOOOOONDS is still up for debate though

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The thread repeatedly pointed to Juice=Juice, which reportedly sold out all 8,000 seats at both Budokan and PIA Arena using FC first-round presale alone, all while keeping companions members-only. Compared to that, MORNING MUSUME。’26’s decision to allow non-member companions for this graduation show was read as a response to concerns about ticket sales, and it became a hot topic symbolizing the popularity gap between the groups. On the other hand, because it’s still a lottery system, there’s a chance a non-member companion gets in while the member who actually applied loses the drawing, which has sparked questions about how member privileges are being handled. At Hello! Project, companion conditions often change from one graduation concert to the next, so whether this approach spreads to future shows will largely depend on how ticket applications go for this concert.

Box office figures for the anime film “Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island” (released July 24) were announced, showing it surpassed 11.33 million admissions and ¥16.52 billion in revenue over its 62-day theatrical run. It’s already the No. 1 grossing film released in 2026, and ranks 15th on the all-time box office chart. In 14th place is “THE FIRST SLAM DUNK” (released 2022), with ¥16.67 billion.

Released in 447 theaters nationwide (382 standard + 65 IMAX), the film is Chiikawa’s first movie, built around a long-form story called the “Siren Arc,” written especially for the film by original creator Nagano. It follows Chiikawa and friends as they receive an invitation to a “special island” and head off on an island training camp. This long-awaited adaptation brings to life one of the series’ most popular arcs — one that repeatedly trended on social media as it was serialized — with Chiikawa’s adventures depicted under Nagano’s full supervision.

It was free on Abema so I tried prepping and seeing if it was worth a theater trip, but I gave up at episode 158.

No way, this is absolutely getting massive repeat viewings lol
I'll grant that a lot of it is people chasing the bonus items (tokuten).
As a film alone, it wouldn't hit numbers like this without the bonuses — it's not quite that good.
If anything, it's because of the bonuses that it's done this well; without them it might've done a bit less.

Chiikawa runs on two pillars — story fans and merch popularity — so the bonus-item push hits hard.
    22AnonymousSep 24, 2026 16:19

    Re: #22
Bonus-item marketing used to be pretty much limited to small-release otaku anime,
but ever since Demon Slayer established a whole reselling culture during COVID,
huge wide releases like One Piece, Slam Dunk, and Gundam SEED handing out mountains of bonuses became the norm.
Meanwhile Evangelion and Jujutsu Kaisen only ran about 5 rounds of bonuses.

Even Demon Slayer's own Mugen Train only did 9 rounds, but it kept escalating — Infinity Castle ran 24 rounds,
and handed out more than double the copies, over 23 million total.
They put out an insane number of bonus items and even ran random-bonus draws 3 times.
When the all-time box office leader pulls stunts like this, it really trashes the value of the rankings.

    Background and Points of Debate

At the root of this bonus-item-marketing debate is the method established by 2020’s “Demon Slayer: Mugen Train” — distributing admission bonuses (nyujosha tokuten) in staggered waves to encourage repeat viewings. As the thread notes, that film ran 9 waves of bonuses, while “Infinity Castle” Part 1 alone ran 24 waves and reportedly distributed more than 23 million copies total — meanwhile films like Evangelion and Jujutsu Kaisen ran only around 5 waves, showing how much the scale of these campaigns varies by title. That variance makes comparing all-time box office rankings tricky, and it’s worth being cautious about judging films purely by revenue when stacking them against pre-bonus-era titles like “Spirited Away” or “Titanic.” The thread also saw comments like “people who used to mock it are doing a total 180 now,” reflecting how, even though Chiikawa has been a consistently buzzy topic online for years, opinion remains split on what’s really driving its popularity — the quality of the work itself, or the pull of the bonus items.

  • Yuta Misaki: “If Self-Checkout Cut Labor Costs, Shouldn’t Prices Come Down Too?” — 5ch Fires Back: “Labor Isn’t the Only Expense”

On September 24, 2026, entrepreneur Yuta Misaki — formerly known as the “Green Juice Prince” — posed a question on X: “If prices go up because labor costs rise, then shouldn’t prices also reflect the savings when self-checkout cuts labor costs?” The post sparked debate on 5channel. In the thread, many pushed back, arguing “it’s not simply about labor costs,” pointing out that even after switching to self-checkout, stores still need staff for shoplifting prevention and customer assistance, on top of the cost of installing and maintaining the machines. Others shared stories of crowded convenience-store checkout lines, or argued that self-checkout is precisely what makes 24-hour operation possible — with some commenters even questioning Misaki’s stance as a business owner.

It was never that simple to begin with.
So what happens if self-checkout disappears from the world entirely?

    First, 24-hour operation vanishes immediately,
and every supermarket cuts its hours.
Everyone piles into that shorter window, creating massive lines.
Shelves stay permanently empty, and people who want to buy things simply can't.

Shoplifting is part of it, but on top of that, stores are often forced to station staff nearby just to help people use the self-checkout.
Because of that, "semi-self" checkout — where only the payment step is self-service — has become the mainstream, and more stores are apparently ditching full self-checkout altogether.

The wholesale price of the products themselves has gone up.
Shipping costs like trucking have gone up.

    It's not a leap, it's just a fact.
Actually, there's a behind-the-scenes reason closing is the harder option.
Every supermarket is effectively running 24 hours internally anyway.
Staying fully open ends up being more efficient.
Self-checkout is a huge help in making that happen.
Even stores that close at 8 or 9 work the same way behind the scenes.

The fact that supermarkets can still exist the way they do today is already proof that society is benefiting hugely from this.
    Thanks to self-checkout.

    95AnonymousSep 24, 2026 16:48
    Re: #94
That's exactly the point — the benefit comes from keeping essential infrastructure running.
For supermarkets, self-checkout is literally a survival strategy.
It's not even a matter of profit and loss anymore, it's life or death.
That's why this guy's take is so strange, given he's supposed to be a businessman.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Self-checkout isn’t only about cutting labor costs — it’s also meant to shorten checkout wait times, save floor space, and lower the cost of running 24-hour operations, so it doesn’t fit neatly into a simple “less labor cost = lower prices” equation. In practice, on top of installation and maintenance costs, stores also have to absorb losses from checkout errors and shoplifting, and many still need to station staff to help customers unfamiliar with the system — meaning full unmanned operation hasn’t been achieved at many stores. As the thread pointed out with the gap between the corporate price index and the consumer price index (7.6% versus 1.9% year-on-year), how much of the rise in wholesale prices and logistics costs can be passed on to retail prices varies by industry, which limits the value of comparisons that isolate labor costs alone. While Misaki’s comment offered an easy-to-grasp contrast, the main point of contention in the thread was that many felt it failed to account for the complexity of the underlying cost structure.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5channel (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “Yuta Misaki: If “Labor Costs Rise → Prices Go Up,” Then Shouldn’t “Self-Checkout Cutting Labor Costs” Mean “Prices Should Reflect That Too? Doesn’t Add Up, Does It?”“.

  • Sho Hasumi Responds to Hikaru Ijuin’s Brutal Crayon Shin-chan Review: “I Should’ve Just Mooned Them”

Sho Hasumi of the comedy trio Dau 90000 wrote a script for the anime Crayon Shin-chan that radio host Hikaru Ijuin blasted as “boring enough to make your legs give out.” Hasumi responded on another show with a self-deprecating “I should’ve just mooned them” — a line originally coined by Nobuyuki Hanawa of the comedy duo Knights, which Hasumi was merely echoing. On 5ch, though, that nuance got lost, and some took it as plain defiance rather than self-deprecating humor, splitting opinion. Plenty of posters who actually watched the episode on TVer agreed with Ijuin that “it really wasn’t funny,” and the thread argued over whether to blame the script itself or the way Ijuin delivered his takedown.

    Re: #40
Nah, nobody's actually labeling him lol. Like he said himself, it's pure delusion — nobody was even talking about Ijuin. He's convinced himself he's being called a has-been and is taking it out on Hasumi, and now he's pulling exactly that kind of has-been move lol.
    52AnonymousSep 24, 2026 16:21
The kindness of comedians never firing back at Hasumi's go-to bit "nobody cares about comedy anyway" with "nobody cares about theater either unless it's a major company." Outside Yoshimoto, Shochiku, Takarazuka Revue, and Shiki, pretty much the only one with a loyal fanbase is "Shinkansen" (likely a pun on the indie theater troupe Gekidan☆Shinkansen, whose name sounds like "bullet train").

It's probably the same kind of sketch comedy as Zero-San — the type that gets praised by people going "heh, I get it, I'm in on the joke." They should have Hasumi write a script for Yoshimoto instead — curious how he'd handle that old-school, no-frills style of comedy.

Shinkigeki performers read the room and improvise on the fly with stock lines like "whatcha gonna do" — that might be tough for him to write for.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The episode Hasumi wrote fell into a slot with more creative latitude than usual, partly because original creator Yoshito Usui has passed away. The “I should’ve just mooned them” line that came up on air was, as commenter #18 points out, simply Hasumi echoing back a remark first made by Knights’ Hanawa — not something Hasumi came up with himself. Miss that detail, and the impression of “a defiant Hasumi” takes on a life of its own. The thread split over whether to read Ijuin’s harsh review as “picking on someone weaker” or as “an honest opinion,” with several posters who actually watched it on TVer siding with Ijuin. Some also pointed to a gap between how Hasumi is viewed within the comedy industry versus by general viewers, a point several tied back to how his predecessor, Fuwa-chan, was eventually dropped.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports Express+) thread “Dau’s Sho Hasumi: “I should’ve just mooned them” — responds to Hikaru Ijuin’s comment that his Crayon Shin-chan script was “boring enough to make your legs give out,” saying “I was trying to be unconventional”.”

  • Xbox’s Domestic Weekly Sales Slump Into Double Digits, Sparking Debate Over the Business’s Health

On 5ch’s “Hardware & Industry” (Geha) board, a thread caught fire after sales figures were posted showing Xbox’s domestic weekly hardware sales stuck in the single or low double digits. The discussion also brought in comparisons with Nintendo Switch 2 and PS5 sales figures, the history of Microsoft consolidating and shutting down game studios, and the view that Microsoft is shifting its focus from hardware to software. While some posters flatly declared Xbox is “pulling out” of the market, others pushed back, pointing to Microsoft’s consistently strong quarterly net profit as proof that “the business itself isn’t shaky,” leaving opinions split on Xbox’s current state.

So the blue area's gone completely by 2028? That's intense!

Background and Key Points of Debate

Xbox’s poor domestic sales performance has been a recurring topic of discussion for several years now, and this thread is simply the latest chapter. The backdrop is Microsoft’s move in the 2020s to bring major studios like Bethesda and Activision Blizzard under its umbrella, while also consolidating or shutting down some of its development studios — the “the studios have shrunk” comments in the thread are pointing to this trend. The point of contention was whether it’s fair to equate weak hardware sales with the health of the business as a whole. Since Microsoft’s revenue spans businesses well beyond consoles, including cloud and OS, some argue it’s premature to judge the company’s overall standing purely on hardware unit sales. There’s also been a growing trend in recent years of Xbox titles releasing on PS5 as well, and the thread’s central divide came down to whether to treat “Xbox the hardware” and “Microsoft the software company” as separate things.

  • Soya Igari: “No Way Alcohol Is Good for You” — Idol Questions Older Generation, 5ch Claps Back: “It’s Medicine for the Soul”

Soya Igari (24), a member of the five-person Jr. group “KEY TO LIT,” questioned the common claim from older generations that “alcohol is medicine” and “the best cure for a hangover is more alcohol,” during the September 23 broadcast of “Honma de ka!? TV.” While host Akashiya Sanma invoked the old saying that drinking in moderation is “the best of all medicines,” Igari shot back, “There’s no way alcohol is good for you. I honestly don’t get it.” The remark split 5ch commenters between those sympathizing with Igari and those defending the tradition of an evening drink, sparking a broader debate over which does more social harm: alcohol or tobacco.

    9/24 (Thu) 14:56

Soya Igari (24), a member of the five-person Jr. group “KEY TO LIT (Kiteretsu),” appeared on Fuji TV’s “Honma de ka!? TV” (Wednesdays, 9:00 p.m.), aired on the 23rd. In a segment where guests shared behavior from the Showa and Heisei generations that felt “impossible to take seriously,” the episode aired as a special titled “Sanma vs. Reiwa Common Sense! Bridging the Generation Gap.”

Igari pointed out, “Something I honestly don’t get about the older generation — don’t they always say things like ‘alcohol is medicine’?” Host Akashiya Sanma responded, “Well, there’s that old saying, ‘the best of all medicines.’” Igari pressed on: “They always say things like ‘cure a hangover with more alcohol.’ It just seems crazy to me. It doesn’t make sense. There’s no way alcohol is good for you,” he said, shaking his head.

A total wreck when sober, but sharp as a tack once they've had a drink —
feel like there was a character just like that in Bakabon.

    Background and Points of Debate

The saying “alcohol is the best of all medicines” traces back to a Chinese classical text, and as several thread commenters pointed out, it’s believed to have originated as a justification for the state’s monopoly on alcohol, salt, and iron. Meanwhile, the so-called “J-curve” theory — which held that moderate drinking lowers mortality — has been criticized for a statistical bias, since the comparison group lumped in people who had already quit drinking due to poor health; in recent years the WHO has taken the clear position that there is no safe amount of alcohol, that the safe amount is zero. The divide in the thread reflects a temperature gap between the generation defending the long-standing culture of the evening drink and TV’s “anything’s forgivable if you were drunk” attitude, and a younger generation that puts more weight on health data. Rather than being a judgment on Igari personally, the debate ends up putting the common wisdom — repeated on TV again and again — that “alcohol is good for you” under scrutiny, making it an easy point of agreement for non-drinking viewers.

  • Chunichi’s Next Manager: Inoue to Stay On? Buzz Grows Around Shima’s Promotion and a ‘Third Man’ Wildcard

Chunichi Dragons manager talk buzzed on 5ch this week, with speculation that manager Kazuki Inoue will return next season, rumors that head coach Motohiro Shima could be promoted, and calls for a wildcard “third man” hire. Threads floated wishlists for Hideki Matsui and Kimiyasu Kudo, while others pointed out that the parent company, the Chunichi Shimbun, and factional politics within the alumni association have long shaped managerial appointments. The conversation naturally drifted to predictions for the Giants’ next manager (Yoshinobu Takahashi, Hayato Sakamoto, Tatsunori Hara, Hideki Matsui), showing just how much interest there is in managerial moves across the Central League.

Sakamoto's still got the doubles record going, and if he keeps it up for two more years he could reach 4th all-time in hits.

    Background and Talking Points

Managerial appointments for the Chunichi Dragons are often shadowed by a distinctive dynamic: the club’s relationship with its parent company, the Chunichi Shimbun, and factional politics within the alumni association (often called the “Koyama faction”). The thread saw plenty of faction talk — claims that Takeshi Yamasaki, Ibata, and Morino could never become Chunichi manager — alongside criticism of the parent company’s management approach. At the same time, predictions for the Giants’ next manager (Takahashi Yoshinobu, Sakamoto, Hara, Matsui) came up too, underscoring just how much interest there is in managerial moves across the Central League as a whole. The futures of manager Kazuki Inoue and head coach Motohiro Shima, along with the “third man” wishlist, remain purely speculative, and the thread’s “favorite / contender / dark horse / longshot” style predictions were largely playful guesswork. What’s easy to miss is that all of this is anonymous-forum rumor and speculation — not an official announcement from the club.

  • Sendai Pokémon GO Event Clashes with Tohoku University Entrance Exam Dates, Forcing Applicants to Lodge Outside the Prefecture

The dates for “Pokémon GO Wild Area,” a major event being held in Sendai from November 6–8, overlap with Tohoku University’s comprehensive-selection (AO) entrance exam, leaving applicants scrambling to find lodging. Hotels in the city were quickly booked up by event attendees, with reports of rates spiking to 60,000–70,000 yen per night. The university has secured roughly 1,500 rooms, but most are outside Miyagi Prefecture, raising concerns about the burden on students facing exams. On 5channel, opinions split between those blaming applicants who booked late for their own predicament and those arguing the university should announce exam dates earlier — with the discussion also branching into university trivia, such as Tohoku University filling about 30% of its total enrollment quota (671 students) through AO admissions, and its globally respected materials engineering program.

Lodging in the city was quickly snapped up by event attendees, making it difficult for applicants to secure rooms. The university arranged roughly 1,500 rooms, but many are located outside Miyagi Prefecture, raising concerns about the burden this places on students standing at a major crossroads in their lives.

It was held in Nagasaki in 2025, drawing about 420,000 people over three days. This year, Sendai is the only city in Japan hosting it. Sendai previously hosted “Pokémon GO Fest” in 2024, drawing about 370,000 people and generating an estimated economic impact of roughly 7.4 billion yen.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Tohoku University currently recruits 671 students — about 30% of its total enrollment quota — through comprehensive-selection (AO) admissions, making it known as one of the national universities with a relatively high AO ratio. Meanwhile, “Pokémon GO Wild Area” is a major real-world event that drew 420,000 people over three days when held in Nagasaki in 2025, and this time Sendai is the only city in Japan hosting it. The thread’s opinions split mainly between voices holding applicants who booked late responsible for their own situation, and voices criticizing the underlying structure in which the event’s announcement and room-booking outpaced the exam schedule — with the latter camp also floating the idea that the university should announce exam dates earlier. There were also some barbed comments about “people past retirement age still playing games” and digs tied to academic pedigree at “bottom-tier universities,” which became a separate point of friction from the core lodging issue worth noting. Also worth noting: the claim in the thread that “AO application guidelines were published on August 28” comes from a forum post, and the sequence relative to when the event schedule was announced has not been confirmed against primary sources.
