  • Rental Apartment Dealbreakers Spark Debate: 5ch Users Say ‘Propane Gas and Lofts Are the Real Killers — Utility Bills Skyrocket’

A thread where 5ch users traded “conditions to avoid” when hunting for a rental apartment took off. Propane gas hookups and loft-equipped units got slammed for driving up utility bills and being a hassle to use, while ground-floor units and places near parks or schools drew complaints over security and noise. On the other hand, some posters offered concrete tips, like how even wood-frame buildings can have decent soundproofing if they’re newly built, or how a glut of warning notices posted in the elevator can tip you off to sketchy neighbors. Others pushed back, arguing it’s too simplistic to judge a wood-frame building’s soundproofing by structure alone — opinions in the thread were split.

If the building's newly built, even wood-frame won't have laughably bad soundproofing

I visit all kinds of apartment buildings for work, and buildings where the elevator walls are plastered with warning notices have seriously bad vibes among residents. Stuff like 'Follow the trash disposal rules,' 'Do not use as an Airbnb,' 'We've received noise complaints from neighbors,' or 'No smoking in common areas.' If you don't want to lose the neighbor lottery, cross these buildings off your list during the viewing.

    That's not the whole story
Inside the walls and ceiling there are hollow spaces for wiring that connect to vent fans and vent openings

    99AnonymousOct 3, 2026 23:39
    Re: #96
A convenience store, if I had to pick, but honestly a property with no tenant at all is better

Background and key points of this discussion

Loft units drew particular criticism in the thread because real estate listings sometimes display floor area as the combined total of the ground floor and the loft, meaning the actual livable ground-floor space is smaller than the listed number suggests. Propane gas is supplied under a free-pricing system that varies by provider, unlike city gas, which is regulated as a public utility — making it worth checking the billing setup before signing a lease. As for the soundproofing of wood-frame buildings, the thread split between those arguing that wall thickness and weight matter more than structure type and those arguing wood-frame is structurally disadvantaged either way — no clear consensus emerged. How soundproof a given unit actually is depends heavily on factors like its age and construction quality, which aren’t something you can judge from a floor plan alone.

  • Morning Musume’s ‘SEXY BOY’ Goes Viral on X With Over 140,000 Likes, Current Members React

A post using the music video for Morning Musume’s song “SEXY BOY” racked up more than 140,000 likes on X (formerly Twitter), sparking discussion on Hello! Project-related forums. The MV itself came out roughly 20 years ago, but it has reportedly already racked up 7.92 million views. Many in the thread felt it’s “less the song itself going viral than the surreal choreography and the wording of the post” catching on, and while current members have been trying to recreate it on TikTok and elsewhere, fans have repeatedly pointed out that “they’re not pulling it off.”

    Re: #56
Yeah, they really aren't pulling it off.
They need more of a deadpan stare with furtive glances.

    Background and Key Points

This kind of viral moment isn’t unique to Morning Musume — it’s a recurring phenomenon across Hello! Project songs, where it’s less the popularity of the song itself and more the “surreal” quality of the choreography or footage turning into an internet meme that draws attention. Opinions in the thread were split on how far the agency should go in capitalizing on this kind of accidental virality: some pointed out that “they would have just ignored this in the past,” while others saw the current members’ attempts to recreate it on TikTok and elsewhere as a positive change. Still, many fans noted that the recreations fail to capture the choreography’s particular vibe, raising concerns that the members themselves may not fully grasp what’s actually resonating with people.

  • Bayside Shakedown’s Muroi Shinji and His Brutal Life Story Shock Fans — 5ch: ‘This Actually Made My Chest Hurt’

A recap of everything Muroi Shinji from the “Bayside Shakedown” (Odoru Daisōsasen) film series has gone through — the death of his girlfriend from his Tohoku University days, his demotion after trying to reform the police organization, and his eventual death after starting foster-parent work in retirement — has stirred up discussion on 5ch. Alongside comments like “this is just too pitiful,” the thread sprawled into debates over spoilers right after the film’s release, behind-the-scenes friction between Oda Yuji and Yanagiba Toshiro, how popular the new cast is, and overall opinions on the series.

    Re: #97
Well, the people making it are all old, so… that explains it

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Bayside Shakedown traces back to a TV drama that aired in 1997 and has spawned film adaptations for over two decades, with Yanagiba Toshiro’s Muroi Shinji established as one of the series’ signature characters. The thread’s reference to “bringing back Waku-san even by turning him into AI” refers to recreating a character once played by a now-deceased actor using recent video technology — a genuinely talked-about production technique as the series depicts a generational handover. Opinions in the thread split mainly along two lines: how much tolerance there should be for spoilers right after release, and how the series as a whole should be judged given its new cast and its portrayal of young people and social media. Muroi’s death itself is handled quietly within the films, and several commenters pointed out that many viewers aren’t even aware it happened.

  • From Elite School to Unemployed: 5ch Weighs In — ‘Probably Has a Developmental Disorder’

The poster revealed that despite his parents paying for a junior-high entrance exam cram school and Kumon lessons, and despite going on to a six-year integrated school with a hensachi (deviation score, a common gauge of academic difficulty in Japan) of around 65 and then enrolling in the humanities department of a top regional “former imperial” university, he is now in his late twenties and unemployed. He says he’s currently seeing a psychiatrist and a counselor, and that he still feels weighed down by his grandmother once telling him she wanted him to become a university professor. The thread was split over whether this points to a possible developmental disorder, how his parents handled their investment in his education, or whether he’s simply making excuses — with plenty of other highly educated posters chiming in to admit they’re struggling too.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

It’s not unusual for someone who got into a top school through the junior-high entrance exam process to later struggle with career choices and employment, and cases where the scale of educational investment doesn’t match the outcome come up again and again online. The term “palace” used in the thread is slang for regional former imperial universities, used somewhat ironically in contrast to the University of Tokyo (“Todai”) — it’s easy to mistake for a slur, but it isn’t meant that way. Also, the developmental disorder mentioned is the poster’s own self-assessment, and the post doesn’t make clear whether he actually has a doctor’s diagnosis. Given the nature of anonymous forums, details like educational background and income are likewise unverified self-reports, so they should be read with that in mind. The thread was split between harsh takes blaming the poster’s own “lack of effort” and sympathetic ones pointing to “how he was raised or his environment,” with no clear consensus reached.

  • Round One’s ‘Familiar of Zero’ collab stirs nostalgia on 5ch: “That show’s already 20 years old”

In the 5ch live-commentary thread ‘Shiomegu Wonderland,’ posters reported that amusement chain Round One is still running a collaboration with the anime The Familiar of Zero, sparking a wave of nostalgia alongside questions about whether today’s customer base actually matches the franchise’s fanbase. The same thread saw a string of unrelated posts roll in one after another — a report from manga artist Nene Amazuki’s autograph session, food reports from izakaya and ramen shops in Sapporo, and Halloween cosplay photos — keeping the conversation sprawling rather than focused on one topic.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Threads like this one aren’t built around a single topic — they’re freewheeling live-commentary threads where posters bring whatever they’ve seen, heard, or photographed that day, ranging from anime and games to travel and food. The one point where opinions actually diverged this time was Round One’s long-running habit of collaborating with anime titles: some posters welcomed the nostalgia, while others pointed out a possible mismatch between the chain’s current customer base and the age of the franchise’s fans. The reports on attending Nene Amazuki’s autograph session and on Sapporo restaurants are personal accounts based on each poster’s own experience, with shop and title names quoted directly from the thread. Since chat threads like this don’t arrive at a single conclusion, readers are best off treating it as a collection of individual anecdotes to dip into rather than a single narrative.

  • Even Buying Merch Is a Struggle for Rural Fans — 5ch: “Must Be Nice, You Can Just Take an Overnight Bus to Tokyo”

In a thread on 5ch’s “Anything Goes Live” board, a rural resident who couldn’t buy collab merch for their favorite character at a physical store grumbled, “Must be nice for people on Honshu — you can get to Tokyo in a day on an overnight bus,” and the comment drew a wave of replies. The thread itself was a freewheeling chat thread where talk of VTubers, nostalgic meme images that ring a bell for the Niconico generation, and reminiscing about school days all flowed one after another, with the merch complaint being just one moment within it. Reactions split over how to view the access gap between rural areas and the city, and some posters shot back asking exactly where the original poster lived.

    Background and Talking Points

Threads in the “Anything Goes Live” genre rarely stick to one topic — the conversation typically jumps to something new every few seconds, and this one was no exception, with VTuber reactions, school-day nostalgia, meme images, and merch-buying woes all flowing in parallel. For this article, we’ve pulled out the thread of conversation that holds together. The problem of rural fans struggling to get merch persists even in the age of online shopping, since many “limited collabs” or in-store bonuses end up tied to physical shops or on-site events only. In response to the comment that “people on Honshu can just take an overnight bus to Tokyo,” other posters asked exactly where the original poster lived, highlighting that “living in the countryside” covers a lot of very different situations. Note that this article leaves out a cluster of replies that generalized about crime based on specific schools or hometowns, as well as a cluster of sexually explicit replies — these were side tangents rather than the thread’s main topic, and leaving them out doesn’t disrupt the flow of conversation.

    Background and talking points

“Young Town Saturday” is a flagship MBS Radio program currently hosted by past and present Morning Musume members, including Rio Sakurai and Akane Yumige. In the thread, the relocation of the recording studio became a topic of conversation: in response to the question “Mainichi Shimbun → TBS → where now?”, one post claimed it was “apparently FM Sounds in Hirakawa-cho.” Hirakawa-cho is located in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo, and the comment hints that MBS, an Osaka-based broadcaster, might now be using a studio closer to Tokyo — though this remains speculation within the thread and could not be independently verified. The broadcast date also coincided with the announcement of the Hanshin Tigers’ league championship win, and listeners were surprised that the show stuck to its regular format instead of switching to a special broadcast. The addition of Ringer Hut as a new sponsor was also brought up as a sign of the show’s recent changes.

  • Airi Yamazaki’s Bid to Go Blonde Blocked by Manager — Even Though Groupmates Were Rooting for It

Hello! Project idol Airi Yamazaki revealed that when she asked her manager about dyeing her hair blonde, the request was turned down. According to her own posts, some of her groupmates had actually been egging her on with “go for it, Airi-chan, dye your hair!” — and the news sparked a thread on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. Many posters took the rejection as a positive sign, arguing it’s “proof the agency sees her as an important member,” while others brought up past examples like Hashisako and Akiyama going blonde, and debated what hair color would actually suit her — with cool tones or ash shades coming up as popular suggestions.

Apparently Airi-chan said she wanted to try going blonde, asked her manager about it, got turned down, and was pretty bummed 🙂

Her groupmates were even pushing her to dye it, but the manager still said no 🙂

    No way, seriously?!
She's always wanted white hair, blue hair, high-tone colors…
Last year she even asked me personally about going high-tone at a solo event.
I figured she'd just stopped mentioning it lately… guess that's because she got shot down…

For reference, Ikuta got an instant yes.
    13AnonymousOct 3, 2026 21:17
Members like Tamenaga or Akiyama get the green light.
For Morning Musume it'd be Ikuta or Yokoyama, I guess.
Though even Yokoyama probably wouldn't have gotten an OK in her early days.

As long as it's not the kind of blonde where the roots show through, that is.
    25AnonymousOct 3, 2026 21:28
Wasn't it that Hashisako went blonde, the group's popularity hit rock bottom, and she basically took responsibility by graduating?

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

In Hello! Project, final say over costumes and hair color commonly rests with management rather than the idol herself — a practice the thread’s conversation reflects well. Reactions in the thread split between those who saw the rejection as disappointing, feeling her individuality wasn’t recognized, and those who took a more positive view, framing it as proof she’s treated as an important member. Some posts also linked past members who went blonde, like Hashisako and Akiyama, to subsequent graduations and dips in popularity — but it’s worth noting this isn’t an official explanation from the agency, just speculation that has circulated among fans. The thread never clarified exactly which color was actually turned down.

  • Japan’s Long-Term Interest Rate Breaks 3% — Variable-Rate Mortgage Holders Grow Anxious

On October 3, 2026, news that Japan’s long-term interest rate (the yield on the newly issued 10-year government bond) broke through 3% became a hot topic on a 5ch thread in the “Live Everything G” board. While the Bank of Japan pushes ahead with rate hikes, opinions on the Takaichi administration’s economic management are split, with critics blaming “Takaichi’s fault” clashing against defenders praising her for “honoring her campaign promises.” At the same time, anxiety is spreading among variable-rate mortgage holders — who reportedly make up more than 70% of borrowers — and the yen’s trajectory, having weakened back from 152 to 158 against the dollar, has also become a talking point.

    Re: #104
Nah, it's actually the start of the Golden 40 Years

Background and key points of this discussion

The long-term interest rate is a market-set benchmark determined by the government bond market, distinct from the policy (short-term) rate that the Bank of Japan directly controls, and it influences things like fixed mortgage rates. Variable-rate mortgages, chosen by more than 70% of borrowers, track the short-term rate instead, so breaking above 3% on the long-term rate doesn’t immediately hit their monthly payments. The thread’s central puzzle — “why is the yen weakening even as rates rise?” — stems from the fact that the US is hiking rates at the same time, keeping the US-Japan rate gap from narrowing much. Views on the Takaichi administration’s economic policy were split along partisan lines, with the same remark about the yen being read as either a “retreat” or a kept promise depending on the poster. The disagreement over whether the economy is “good” or “suffering from high prices” also reflects how differently people’s economic circumstances color their perception.

  • Demon Slayer Is Done, One Piece and Conan Keep Going — 5ch: ‘I’ve Earned Enough, Time to Retire’

A 5ch thread lit up over a contrast: Demon Slayer’s creator is said to have “earned a lifetime’s worth of money and retired to the countryside,” while the creators of One Piece and Detective Conan keep drawing to protect their staff’s jobs. Demon Slayer wrapped up in just 23 volumes — unusually short for a shonen manga, where decade-long runs are the norm. The thread spiraled from criticism that “the story was too thin to sustain a long run” into comparisons of other authors’ work ethics, like Hiromu Arakawa and Yoshihiro Togashi, and even a debate over whether Demon Slayer or Dragon Ball has had the bigger economic impact.

Thanks to the anime, people think the manga's good too, but it's rough.

The manga isn't that great either, but the anime covered for it, and that's why it's been deified.

Demon Slayer's films have grossed over ¥30 billion at the box office, taking the all-time #1 and #2 spots. Merch sales are through the roof too. It's miles ahead of Dragon Ball or One Piece.

Sorry, but as an IP, One Piece and Dragon Ball are still bigger than Demon Slayer.
These days Demon Slayer merch isn't selling to kids like it used to — it's struggling.

The way he strikes dramatic poses (like kabuki "mie") is pure style.
Same type as Attack on Titan.

Looks like straight-up bad art to me.

Old-timer Dragon Ball fanboys are still as cringe as ever lol
No matter how you look at it, Demon Slayer's economic impact is bigger lol
What does Dragon Ball even win at?

Demon Slayer fans need to face reality — Dragon Ball ranks higher worldwide in economic impact.

    Re: #93
Dragon Ball's manga has sold 260 million copies.
Demon Slayer's at around 200 million, so Dragon Ball wins there, but factoring in everything else, Demon Slayer takes the win.

    Source?
Domestic box office — Demon Slayer wins by an overwhelming margin.
Overseas too, Demon Slayer wins overwhelmingly.
Demon Slayer merch is selling like a social phenomenon too.
    Show me your source.

    Background and Key Points

Demon Slayer ran from its 2016 serialization debut through 2020, wrapping up in 23 volumes. That’s a very different timeline and production setup from decades-spanning series like One Piece and Detective Conan, so framing this as a simple difference in “work ethic” is a stretch. The thread also speculated about the author’s gender and family situation, but creator Koyoharu Gotouge has never publicly confirmed their gender, so none of that is verified. The circulation and box-office figures cited in the Demon Slayer-vs-Dragon Ball economic comparison also include claims with shaky sourcing within the thread, so they shouldn’t be taken at face value. It is an officially confirmed fact that the Mugen Train film holds Japan’s all-time #1 box office spot, but which franchise comes out on top overall still depends on which metric you use.
