  • Traits of ‘boring to be around’ people spark discussion — 5ch: ‘They criticize but never offer an alternative’

A thread on 5ch’s “Everything Live G” board asking users to describe “traits of people who are boring to be around” drew a flood of responses. The answers largely boiled down to four patterns: “they criticize but never offer an alternative,” “they won’t act until they’ve checked how the internet reacted,” “they only ever talk about themselves,” and “they just agree with everything and never state their own opinion.” Notably, as the thread went on, a wave of self-deprecating replies like “wait, isn’t this just… us?” turned the conversation on its head — what started as griping about other people ended up boomeranging back as a joke at the posters’ own expense.

    ● The moment you realize: "Being with this person is somehow boring"
It's not that they're bad at conversation. They're not the quiet type either. And yet — isn't there always that one person who leaves you thinking, "Somehow, being with them is just… boring"?
    ● No matter what you suggest, it's always "Yeah, but…"

    Background and Talking Points

Threads asking users to profile “people who are boring to be around” are a recurring staple on 5ch and aggregator sites — this isn’t a psychologically grounded classification, just a grab-bag of subjective anecdotes gathered on an anonymous message board. What stood out this time was that many of the traits called out — “criticizes but never offers an alternative,” “won’t move until checking how the internet reacted,” and so on — closely mirrored posting habits commonly seen on the Everything G board itself. Sure enough, replies like “well, that’s basically us” and “so it’s just us, then” kept popping up, turning what started as criticism of other people into a running joke at the posters’ own expense. It reads less as a genuine character study of other people than as a piece of self-referential anonymous-board humor to be enjoyed as such.

  • Kura Sushi’s Not-for-Sale Chiikawa Merch Leaked by Stores Before Launch — 5ch: ‘Stealing Is Now the Optimal Strategy’

In Kura Sushi’s collaboration campaign with the character Chiikawa, non-for-sale merchandise that was supposed to be handed out only via lottery or exchange has reportedly leaked out of some stores before the campaign even officially began, sparking a stir on 5ch. Thread posters speculated that stores may have quietly given the leftover prizes away for free to customers to cover up a stock discrepancy, and voices in the thread worried about the items being resold at inflated prices on flea-market apps, and about Chiikawa’s side potentially pulling out of the collaboration altogether. Some pointed out that similar “leaks” had happened with past collaboration goods too, framing it as an industry-wide problem.

Store: "Wait, you want us to return ALL the prizes for a campaign that hasn't even started yet?? We're gonna get caught, what do we do?!"
Store: "…I got it! Let's just hand out the leftover prizes to customers for free! Then we'll tell Kura Sushi HQ 'a part-timer made a mistake'!"

There are probably tons of stores doing exactly this.

    Re: #76
    Pretty clearly, yeah.
The goal was probably to make the missing stock look accounted for by claiming it went to customers.

    Or they're just idiots.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Non-for-sale merchandise from corporate collaborations like this is normally tracked by head office in advance, with inventory counts set per store for the campaign period — a mismatch in the numbers before the campaign even starts isn’t supposed to happen in the first place. Thread speculation suggests that stores may have balanced the books by claiming items were “given to customers,” covering for stock that part-timers or others had taken home personally or pulled aside to resell on flea-market sites — but the posts don’t reveal how much head office actually knew or what action, if any, was taken. Others pointed out that non-for-sale banners from the Kantai Collection x Lawson collaboration have repeatedly turned up for sale on the market as well, suggesting that lax management of non-for-sale novelties isn’t unique to this case. Meanwhile, some posts tied the incident to a broader decline in “the moral standards of Japanese people,” but that’s a sweeping generalization on a different level from individual acts of misconduct, and it’s worth noting there’s no actual evidence backing that claim.

  • One Piece’s Latest Gag-Filled Battle Scene Splits Fans — 5ch: ‘This Is Just Oda’s Idea of a Fun Fight’

A battle scene featuring Monkey D. Luffy in the newest One Piece chapter has sparked debate on 5ch’s general ‘Anything Goes’ live-discussion board (Nandemo Jikkyō). The panel showing Luffy dodging a giant’s blow used exaggerated gag-style art — his eyes popping out, his tongue stretching — drawing a wave of criticism calling it “gross” and “hard to follow visually,” while other posters defended it as simply “Oda’s idea of what makes One Piece feel like One Piece,” leaving opinion split. Some also pointed to reader survey data suggesting the manga’s core readership is skewing older.

Why did he abandon this direction?

Background and key points of this discussion

One Piece has run in Weekly Shonen Jump since 1997, and from early on it has consistently mixed exaggerated gag-style art — like eyes popping out — into even its serious scenes. The thread’s disagreement centered on whether to accept this as a defining quirk the series has had from the start, or to see it as jarring now that the story has entered its tense, climactic final arc. Notably, most of the critical comments weren’t really objecting to the art style itself so much as questioning its balance against serious plot developments — a nuance that’s easy to miss amid the simpler “bad art” complaints. Also, the cited reader survey data has no clearly stated source, so the numbers themselves haven’t been verified.

A thread on “Nandemo Jikkyō G” — better known as NanG — on 5ch has sparked debate after a poster claimed “this board is nothing but washed-up old men whose lives are over,” pointing to the aging of its userbase. Some argued NanG’s average age crept up after crackdowns on lewd-image threads and a drop in visitors funneled in from aggregator (“matome”) sites, while others weighed in on how NanG’s crowd differs from that of its neighboring anti-corporate (“kenmo”) board, Edge. Commenters traded impressions like “five years ago it was full of young social misfits, but now it reeks of kenmo,” lobbing mutual jabs between NanG and Edge regulars until the thread turned into a self-deprecating debate about the very nature of the board itself.

Same crowd that uses the Chiikawa movie (a hit cute-character anime film) as a bludgeon in the movie threads.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The phrase that kicked off this thread — “this board is nothing but washed-up old men whose lives are over” — is a self-deprecating label commonly thrown around on anonymous message boards, not actual data on the board’s age makeup. NanG (Nandemo Jikkyō G) is a board once known for its lewd-image threads and copypasta culture, with a reputation for skewing young, and it’s often said to have “aged” following stricter content regulations and a drop in visitors arriving via aggregator sites. At the same time, the thread is also full of back-and-forth over how NanG’s userbase differs from — or stacks up against — its neighboring anti-corporate board Edge, with much of the exchange really driven by rivalry between the two boards. What readers should be careful not to misread is that the age references scattered through the posts — “50-somethings,” “the Ice Age generation,” and the like — are purely gut impressions drawn from the posts themselves, not the results of any actual survey by site administrators or a third party.

  • What food is overrated? 5ch says: “It’s just raw fish on rice”

A thread on 5ch asking users to name the “most overrated food, honestly” took off, with sushi sparking the biggest debate. Nominations ranged widely, including sushi (“it’s just raw fish on rice”), Jiro-style ramen, and Turkish cuisine (“supposedly one of the world’s three great cuisines, but all anyone actually knows is kebab and ice cream”). On sushi, opinions split hard between those calling it “mass-produced fast food” and those defending it as “an art form that brings together diverse ingredients into one shape,” with the debate even reaching back to its Edo-period origins. Commenters also raised doubts about other supposedly high-end foods, including Shine Muscat grapes, Kyoto cuisine, and eel.

    Ramen and gyoza

    Background and Key Points

Nigiri sushi is said to have spread during the Edo period as a quick, casual meal sold from street stalls — a very different origin from today’s high-end sushi restaurant culture. The thread reflected that divide, with opinions split right down the middle between “it started as cheap fast food” and appreciation for the technique behind nigiri and its combinations of ingredients. Some pointed out that in America, sushi has become established as a health food, underscoring how the same dish can be valued completely differently depending on the country and era. Shine Muscat grapes are a branded variety marketed on their high sugar content, but some commenters questioned the very obsession with sweetness itself — an angle that’s easy to overlook, since it puts the underlying assumption that “expensive equals delicious” up for debate. The observation that Turkish cuisine, despite being called one of the world’s three great cuisines, is known to most people only through kebab and ice cream is also an interesting example of the gap between reputation and actual familiarity.

  • Itano Tomomi’s Video Shoot in a Hotel Bath Changing Room Sparks Debate — Ritz-Carlton Says It Was ‘Special Permission’

It’s come to light that former AKB48 member and TV personality Tomomi Itano filmed a video in the changing room attached to the Ritz-Carlton’s large communal bath, sparking discussion on 5ch’s “Everything Live” board. According to a Yahoo! News report, the filming was reportedly done with the hotel’s prior permission. Still, many on the thread argued that filming in a changing room shared with other guests is a problem in itself, with “unacceptable” being a common refrain regardless of whether permission was granted. Others defended the move, noting it’s not unusual for high-end hotels to accommodate this kind of filming for media purposes, leaving the thread split.

    Re: #108
Anyone would hate being filmed somewhere they might end up naked on camera

Background and key points of debate

The hotel in question appears to be the Ritz-Carlton in Nikko, Tochigi, and the focus of the discussion was that filming in the shared changing room attached to the large communal bath was reportedly done with “prior permission.” What split the thread wasn’t so much whether permission existed, but whether “filming itself is inappropriate in a shared space, permission or not” — commenters like those at posts 25, 37, and 40 kept up their criticism even while accepting that permission had been granted, while others, like post 45, defended it as not unusual for media appearances. What’s easy to overlook is that a shared changing room is a space where other guests could be present at any moment, and even with the hotel’s blessing, there’s no way to get the consent of any third party who happens to be there at the time. The side debate comparing Osaka’s and Tokyo’s luxury hotels is a tangent separate from the main issue and should be read apart from the question of whether the filming itself was appropriate.

  • What Earbuds Do You Swear By? 5ch Weighs In With Everything From Chinese Budget Brands to Anker to High-End Gear

A thread titled “What earbuds do you NanG folks use?” popped up on the Nandemo Jikkyou board (a sports/variety discussion board on 5ch, whose regulars call themselves “NanG”), and users piled in one after another with their personal favorites. The responses ranged wildly in price and philosophy — from 60,000-yen-class Chinese wired earbuds to Sony’s WF-1000XM6, EarFun, Anker, and Noble’s multi-driver models — highlighting the divide between wired and wireless loyalists. As the thread went on, attention shifted to the relationship between price and sound quality, specifically how much a 10x price gap actually buys you, with many agreeing you can hear a difference up into the tens of thousands of yen, but beyond 100,000 yen it’s mostly down to personal taste.

I'm confident I could tell apart the ones I actually own.
Though I don't own anything that fancy

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

In recent years, Chinese and other newer manufacturers like EarFun and Noble have been gaining ground in the earbuds market thanks to their strong price-to-performance ratio, and the fact that they get mentioned in the same breath as Sony’s flagship models reflects that trend. Where opinions in the thread diverged was on how much a price difference actually translates into sound quality: many felt a noticeable difference in the range from a few thousand to a few tens of thousands of yen, but the prevailing view was that above 100,000 yen, it’s less about universal performance gaps and more a hobbyist’s pursuit of the unique character only that specific model can offer. Anker came up as an example of bass-heavy tuning that splits opinion, suggesting it’s not a one-size-fits-all choice. The thread also raised the question of whether people could actually tell the difference in a blind test, hinting at the tension between genuine performance gains and the “self-satisfaction” that’s part and parcel of the audio hobby.

  • Heavy Rain Floods Kanto: JR Cuts Train Service 20-30%—5ch Says ‘Just Power Through and Get to Work’

Heavy rain is forecast across the Kanto region through September 7, and JR East has announced it will cut train frequency by 20-30% on major lines including the Yamanote Line, Chuo Line Rapid, Sobu Line Rapid, and Chuo-Sobu Local Line. In Tokyo’s Kita Ward, Level 4 evacuation instructions were issued to roughly 5,200 residents in the landslide hazard zones of Oji and Akabane, and Tokyo Metro also warned of possible delays and service suspensions. Some municipalities in Kanagawa, Saitama, and Tochigi decided to close elementary and junior high schools for the day. The thread saw frustration—”with trains cut back, it’s bound to be packed, so how are we supposed to get to work?”—clash with hardline arguments like “if you’re a working adult, just power through and go to work,” along with a stream of complaints about workplaces that don’t allow remote work or paid leave.

    Re: #63
Hasn't flooded since they built the underground palace (the massive underground flood-control reservoir)

Background and Key Points of This Topic

JR East’s practice of preemptively cutting train service (a “planned reduction in service”) to match heavy rain forecasts is an approach that has spread in recent years, born from lessons learned when 2019’s Typhoon No. 15 caused chaos as commuters swarmed stations. This latest cut is an extension of that same policy. Kita Ward’s “Warning Level 4 Evacuation Instructions” is a category that was consolidated after a 2021 revision of the Basic Act on Disaster Management abolished the old “evacuation advisory” designation; legally, it amounts to a strong call to “evacuate promptly.” Opinions in the thread were split over whether to push through and go to work or stay home, reflecting a structural problem: many workplaces still don’t genuinely allow remote work or paid leave even during disasters. It should also be noted that, as of the time of posting, no actual flooding or water damage had occurred—the evacuation instructions and service-suspension information are “advance warnings based on forecasts,” not confirmed reports of damage.

  • Tokyo Full-Time Employees Average ¥8.61 Million a Year — ‘The Median Tells a Very Different Story’

A thread titled “Apparently the average annual salary for male full-time employees in Tokyo is ¥8.61 million” popped up on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” (Live Anything) board. This kind of average-salary data goes viral again and again, and this time was no exception — commenters quickly pushed back with statistical nitpicks like “If the average is ¥8.61 million, the median has to be way lower” and “That doesn’t match doda’s numbers at all.” The conversation soon spiraled into a salary-bragging showdown of dubious veracity: one poster claimed to come from a landowning family with real estate held under multiple names, another claimed to be a freelancer pulling in ¥60 million a year, and even the thread’s original poster admitted to earning ¥12 million — with no way to verify any of it.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Average income” figures tend to get pulled upward by a small number of high earners, and it’s usually the median that better reflects what “most people” actually feel their income is like. Even in private job-change services and official government statistics, it’s common to see gaps of several hundred thousand to a million yen between the average and median for the same population — so the thread’s pushback that “¥8.61 million is an average, not a median” is grounded in real statistical behavior. That said, claims like coming from a landowning family or earning ¥60 million a year are nothing more than anonymous self-reports, and nothing in the thread backs them up. These exchanges should be read with the grain of salt reserved for 5ch’s trademark “income flexing,” and the thread never even specifies which survey or year the ¥8.61 million figure actually comes from.

  • 5ch’s VIP Board Crowdsources Dinner via Random Reply-Number Voting — Menu Ends Up With ‘Acorns’

On 5ch’s Newsspeed VIP board, a thread went up to decide dinner ingredients using the “anka” format — a game where a specific reply number is called out in advance, and whatever gets posted there becomes the pick. After crowdsourcing seven ingredients and three seasonings one anka at a time, the final menu turned into a chaotic mix: acorns, tofu, salmon, pork, basil, and zaza-mushi (a traditional aquatic-insect delicacy), plus a curry roux — topped off with fiery extras like habanero and wasabi. Partway through, someone even threw in a curry roux joke-named “Poop,” prompting the classic thought experiment from onlookers waiting on the sidelines: “which would you rather eat — poop-flavored curry, or curry-flavored poop?” The OP announced they’d step away and report back once the dish was finished, but the thread text alone doesn’t confirm whether it was ever actually completed.

Might be a repeat, but there's the eternal poop-curry question
Poop-flavored curry, or curry-flavored poop — which do you eat?
    "Neither" isn't an option
    Which one are you picking?

    Background and Talking Points

“Anka” is a VIP-board tradition where a specific reply number is designated ahead of time, and whatever gets posted at that number is adopted as the answer — a staple format used for everything from deciding meals to major life choices. This thread runs on the same format, picking ingredients one at a time via anka. Notably, “zaza-mushi” is a preserved dish of aquatic insects genuinely eaten in places like Nagano Prefecture — alongside hachinoko (bee larvae), it’s a real regional delicacy, making it the only actually traditional food among the joke ingredients. “Poop,” on the other hand, is just a joke name slapped onto a curry roux — it doesn’t refer to real excrement. The thread contains no photos of a finished dish and no follow-up report, so there’s no way to confirm what was ultimately made, or whether the cooking ever happened at all. Readers should keep in mind this thread is “half joke, follow-through unconfirmed.”
