  • “Was I a Fool?” — 1,191 Investors Sue ‘Everyone’s Landlord’ Real Estate Fund

It has come to light that 1,191 investors in the real estate investment product “Minna de Ooyasan” (“Everyone’s Landlord”) are moving forward with a mass lawsuit demanding cancellations and refunds. A man in his 70s from the Kanto region poured his retirement savings into the scheme and says, “Was I a fool? Me?” The 5ch thread reacting to the report saw a clash between self-responsibility arguments (“there’s no such thing as guaranteed principal in investing”) and doubts about the product itself (“promising a 7% annual return was suspicious from the start”), with the discussion spilling over into why people convince themselves “surely I’ll be the exception.”

He thought he was buying peace of mind for his old age. He’d hoped it would help make ends meet, even just a little. But now past seventy, the man laughs weakly: “Was I a fool? Me?”

Over the real estate investment product “Minna de Ooyasan,” 1,191 investors are set to soon file a mass lawsuit demanding cancellations and refunds.

A man in his 70s living in the Kanto region filed his own suit in September, ahead of this mass action. Whether the retirement funds he sank into it will ever come back weighs on him constantly.

Background and Key Points of This Story

“Minna de Ooyasan” (“Everyone’s Landlord”) has been marketed as a fractional real estate investment product promising roughly 7% annual returns, but as an investment, there was never any real guarantee on principal or yield to begin with. What makes this case notable is its scale — 1,191 investors banding together for a mass lawsuit seeking refunds and cancellations — underscoring just how widespread the fallout has been. Opinion in the thread split between blaming investors for not spotting an unrealistically high yield, and blaming the product’s design and how it was sold. Behavioral economics has shown that the ‘surely I’ll be the exception’ mindset isn’t limited to the elderly and can affect anyone, meaning a simple self-responsibility argument doesn’t tell the whole story. What happens with the lawsuit, or any prospect of refunds, remains unclear from current reporting.

  • Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Wisdom Kings, Devas: 5ch Ranks the Buddhist Pantheon — “Miroku Bodhisattva Becomes a Buddha in 5.67 Billion Years”

A thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board asking about the difference between “bodhisattva,” “nyorai (Buddha),” “Shaka,” and “Kannon” turned into a crowdsourced lecture on Buddhist hierarchy. Posters explained a four-tier ranking — Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Wisdom Kings, and Devas — with Dainichi Nyorai at the very top and Shaka Nyorai, Yakushi Nyorai, and Amida Nyorai each handling their own role beneath him. But whether bodhisattvas count as “Buddhas,” and how Jizo Bodhisattva relates to Kannon Bodhisattva, sparked disagreement from post to post, with corrections and pushback flying throughout the thread.

It's complicated. Taken in the narrowest sense, "Buddha" means just the Buddha himself — Shaka Nyorai alone. But other accomplished practitioners said to have attained enlightenment the same way as the Buddha were also called Nyorai and treated as Buddhas.
Beyond that, there's a long history of bodhisattvas who haven't become Nyorai but are close to it — Miroku Bodhisattva especially, since he's foretold to be the next to complete his training — along with many other objects of worship, being popularly treated as "Buddhas" in the broad sense, even if that's technically inaccurate.
Though exactly how far that extends varies a bit by sect.

Like I wrote above, that's because Buddhism absorbed the Hindu gods and slotted them in as revered but subordinate figures (though some of those gods became bodhisattvas or Wisdom Kings, and some Nyorai are also said to trace back to Hindu gods)
But ranking low on paper doesn't mean low in popularity — it's common for a Deva to be far more beloved than some Nyorai who's technically ranked higher but feels totally unrelatable
    78AnonymousSep 6, 2026 17:38
    Shaka
→ An actual historical person who lived in India
→ Called "Shaka Nyorai" because he attained enlightenment.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The four-tier classification of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Wisdom Kings, and Devas comes mainly from how figures are positioned in the mandalas of Esoteric Buddhism (the Shingon school) — it isn’t an official hierarchy shared across all Buddhist sects. The claim that Miroku Bodhisattva will become a Buddha in 5.67 billion years traces back to the “Miroku descent” belief, which holds that Miroku (Maitreya) will be reborn in the far-distant future, long after Shakyamuni’s death, and attain enlightenment there. The idea raised in the thread that Amaterasu is identified with Dainichi Nyorai, and Hachiman with Amida Nyorai, reflects shinbutsu-shugo, the historical framework blending Shinto and Buddhism that was widespread before the Meiji-era decree separating the two religions. On the other hand, claims like “Ashura Kannon” or “Jizo Bodhisattva is an incarnation of Kannon Bodhisattva” are folk notions not found in standard Buddhist scholarship — as posters themselves pointed out and corrected within the thread — so they shouldn’t be taken at face value.

  • Car Hits Concrete Block on Private Property — Driver or Homeowner at Fault? 5ch Weighs In

A dashcam clip posted to 5ch shows a kei car clipping and damaging a concrete block and white pole set up at the entrance to a private residence. Cutting the wheel wide on a narrow residential street, the driver swung into the property line, knocked the barrier flying, and drove off. The thread split between those saying “the driver’s the one at fault for cutting into private property in the first place” and those countering “the homeowner’s placement of the block on a low-visibility street is also a problem.” The debate didn’t stop there — it spread into the legal treatment of hit-and-runs and whether the victim was right to hand the dashcam footage over to the media, with opinions sharply divided.

More likely some media outlet sniffed the story out and came asking, "would you mind sharing the footage if that's okay…?" and since handing it over doesn't hurt them as the victim, they just went along with it

If they were going fast enough to splash you like that, there's basically no way for them to know afterward whether they actually splashed you or not

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Placing a concrete block or white pole at the entrance to one’s property is a common self-defense measure in residential areas with “open” yards (no gate or wall), where the boundary with the road is ambiguous — and, as in this case, that kind of setup isn’t rarely prone to inviting collisions. A hit-and-run involving only property damage and no injury tends to be treated as a minor offense, like a violation of the duty of safe driving, rather than full-blown property destruction, unless intent can be proven — which makes the thread’s talk of “legal-fee insurance riders” and “property-damage insurance” a fairly realistic read of how this would actually play out. The real point of disagreement was over how to weigh fault: the principle that “any driving that crosses even slightly onto private property is 100% not okay” clashed with the local custom that “on narrow residential streets, people have always quietly tolerated a bit of encroachment.” The other flashpoint was whether the victim was right to hand the dashcam footage to the media — some argued it amounted to a de facto public shaming, while others countered that it’s a legitimate countermeasure as long as the driver never came forward. None of this has a clear legal answer, and it’s worth remembering how much it comes down to regional and personal differences in perspective.

  • Marketed as a Set, But Is Kawashima the Real Ace? Hello! Project Fans Debate “Eba & Mifu”

A thread comparing members across multiple Hello! Project groups heated up on the group’s message board. It started with a post claiming, “Ebata and Mifu (Kawashima) tend to get talked about as a package deal, but in terms of raw talent, Kawashima is a clear step above.” Commenters weighed in with rankings across four categories — looks, singing, dancing, and talk-show charm — while others pushed back using Instagram follower growth as evidence, splitting the thread into pro-Ebata and pro-Kawashima camps. The debate even got into specific numbers around the response to the Utacon appearance and the impact of recent TV spots, turning it into more than just a simple matter of taste.

But counting just this week, Ebata's got extra posts about her Sandwichman show appearance and how good her outfit coordination was that are close to going viral — so her growth numbers actually come out ahead.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Among Hello! Project fans, there’s a deep-rooted culture of ranking members’ popularity or ability across categories like “looks, singing, dancing, and talk-show charm,” and comparing growth in Instagram followers. What often gets overlooked, though, is that follower counts can be heavily swayed by the agency’s promotional pushes or TV appearances, and don’t necessarily reflect pure popularity on their own. There’s also a recurring pattern — as with Juice=Juice and Angerme — where inter-group rivalry bleeds into debates over individual members, and some in the thread even suggested this looked like infighting among the antis themselves. Read with this fandom-specific dynamic in mind, rather than as a simple popularity poll, the discussion makes a lot more sense.

    HEN (変)

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Nakama Yukie got her start in the 1990s idol group Tokyo Performance Doll, before building her popularity through the late-night drama TRICK and the film Ring. The voice-acting work in the anime Haunted Junction that posters cited as her “dark history” was mostly criticized for weak acting, based on the memories of viewers who watched it at the time. Meanwhile, thinly sourced rumors — like claims that she doesn’t get along with fellow performer Shinohara Ryoko — were corrected in the thread as “fake,” a reminder that chat threads reminiscing about a celebrity’s prime years often mix information of varying reliability. Likewise, the debate over “why she didn’t become as big a star” compared to contemporaries like Okina Megumi and Hirosue Ryoko reflects only the posters’ subjective impressions, not any official verification or statement from Nakama herself.

  • Man Drinks Solo at a Neighborhood Chinese Diner, Savors Crispy Noodles — 5ch: ‘It’s All About the Atmosphere 🥺’

In a live-report thread on 5ch, a poster shared photos documenting a solo drinking session at a neighborhood Chinese diner (machi-chuka) he visited in the rain. He posted a running commentary as he ordered century egg tofu and crispy pan-fried noodles (kata-yakisoba), working through the meal alongside his beer. The thread filled with comments lamenting the disappearing atmosphere unique to these old-school diners — including remarks like “Chinese food from foreign-run places is tasty too, but it’s just not the same” — as well as a tangent about regional differences, since some places serve pickled mustard greens (zasai) as a free side with beer while in Nagano it’s typically nozawana pickles instead. What started as a simple live report turned into a broader chat about local food culture.

Nice, drinking more once you're home too? 🥺

Background and Key Points of This Topic

“Machi-chuka” is a colloquial term for small, independently run Chinese diners, and in recent years their numbers are said to be declining due to an aging owner base and a lack of successors — a trend reflected in the thread’s comments about this kind of community-rooted Chinese diner disappearing. The small starter dish served with beer (such as zasai pickled mustard greens) is entirely up to each shop’s discretion, with no nationwide standard, so it makes sense that Nagano Prefecture’s preference for nozawana pickles instead came up naturally as an example of regional food culture. Note that this article omits personal insults directed at the poster and the arguments among participants that stemmed from them, focusing instead on the exchanges centered on the meal and the neighborhood Chinese diner itself.

*This article is compiled as an excerpt and summary of the 5ch (Live News general board) thread “Hey guys, I’m at a neighborhood Chinese diner 🥺.”

  • “Sell Your Paper Books and They’re Basically Free” — 5ch: “You Can Read New Releases for About 400 Yen”

A thread on 5ch’s “Anything Goes Live” board (Nandemo Jikkyo G), titled “Books are digital now — paper books are obsolete,” drew a wave of pushback from posters defending physical books. The flashpoint was a “buy-then-resell” reading style: selling a paper book on Mercari or BookOff right after finishing it, effectively reading it for a few hundred yen. E-book fans cited the hassle of storage and wear as reasons to avoid paper, but paper fans countered that once you factor in resale value, the per-book cost actually beats digital. Posters also split over what counts as a “specialist book” and over the limits of library request systems.

    1AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:17
Nah, if anything, now is the golden age of paper books.
Buy a paper book, get it cheap secondhand, read it, then flip it on Mercari — basically free.
And even without a sale, secondhand copies are always cheap anyway.
    2AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:17
People say paper books take up space, but if you sell them right after finishing, they don't pile up.
There's only so many books you'd actually reread anyway.

    Re: #2
The fact that you HAVE to sell it right away feels like a downside to me.
With e-books you don't have to sell anything at all.

I've done both, and when I actually go back and reread something, it's always the paper copy.
    Plus you can resell it.

I love books, but I rarely reread them, which makes paper make even more sense for me.

Maybe it's server costs or something, but yeah, e-books are basically always pricier than they should be.
About the only place digital wins is something like Kindle Unlimited.
Though Unlimited doesn't even have that many good books, so I barely use it.
    26AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:28

I switch depending on what it's for — paper for business and specialist books I sit down and study, digital for novels and manga.
    25AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:28
    Re: #20
Manga and novels are exactly the stuff I'd say default to paper — you usually only read them once, so being able to resell pays off.
Plus secondhand prices start cheap anyway.
Though I do buy digital on sale for the rare series I actually reread.

    Fair enough.
Books are cheap per unit anyway, and there's shipping on top — not factoring in the labor and cost is very "paper diehard" of you.

    Re: #33
The "labor" involved is like a tiny fraction of the effort it takes to earn money at a job.

On the flip side, a book that doesn't sell means you effectively overpaid for it.

    BookOff University: The Wandering Department
The Gold Guide to Non-Commercial Game Software
The Complete Famicom Disk System Guide

    Re: #39
How is any of that a "specialist book"? Those are just mooks (magazine-book hybrids)!
    40AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:35
Even for a novel I'm dying to read at 2,000 yen — I'll buy it, read it the same day, list it on Mercari, and it'll sell for around 1,900 yen.
After fees and shipping, that's roughly 1,600 yen back.
So I end up reading brand-new releases for basically 400 yen. I do this all the time.

Background and key points of this debate

Against the e-book camp’s argument that paper books “take up space” and “deteriorate,” the thread kept circling back to a third option: reselling used copies. Anecdotes about selling a new release on BookOff or Mercari and, after fees and shipping, ending up paying only a few hundred yen net, work from a different baseline than the e-book side’s price comparisons, which tend to focus only on list price. Meanwhile, e-book prices are often close to paper prices, and posters pointed out that Kindle Unlimited — which offers “only the first few volumes free” — isn’t well suited to manga, meaning the assumed savings are often overestimated. The thread also split over the definition of a “specialist book,” clashing over whether magazine-style mooks like out-of-print game strategy guides count. It’s also easy to overlook that library request systems have caps — nobody can request unlimited books for free.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Anything Goes Live G board) thread “A mysterious faction claims: “Books are digital now! Paper books are obsolete!” — really?.”

  • Customer: “Nitori Told Me My Sofa’s 5-Year Warranty Doesn’t Cover Normal Wear and Tear”

A customer who bought a sofa from Nitori went viral on social media after being refused an exchange, told that “normal wear and tear isn’t covered” despite the sofa coming with a 5-year warranty — and the story sparked a lively discussion on 5ch. The thread expanded into a broader debate about what furniture and appliance warranties actually cover in the first place, with posters pointing out that “manufacturing defects” and “damage within the warranty period” are two different things, and sharing real-world examples of warranty claims for PCs and Iris Ohyama appliances. The discussion also turned up accounts of Nitori mattresses being refused by moving companies due to their internal structure, making for a thread packed with practical knowledge about furniture warranties and shipping.

    Well, obviously.
The warranty's meant for stuff like a leg snapping or the bottom tearing out, not "the cushion sagged after 5 years so replace it." That'd never fly.

I wonder how it'd go nowadays if it's cigarette smoke damage and they say "we'll need to replace the flooring." Back in the day, smoking indoors was just normal, so it probably would've counted as ordinary wear and tear.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

As a general industry standard, furniture warranties are built to cover manufacturer-caused defects and damage that shouldn’t occur under normal use (a leg snapping, the bottom falling out, etc.), while excluding ordinary wear and tear like discoloration or cushion sagging. The thread’s discussion centered on that line, with posters noting that “manufacturing defects” and “failures within the warranty period” are different things, and drawing parallels to how PC BTO warranties and electronics retailers’ extended warranties operate the same way. At the same time, the gap between that industry standard and the consumer expectation that “if you’re advertising a 5-year warranty, it should cover wear and tear too” is what sparked this whole controversy. The thread also branched into some useful practical tidbits about furniture and housing: Nitori mattresses reportedly can’t be recompressed once unpacked, so movers sometimes refuse to transport them, and dents left in flooring by a washing machine should count as ordinary wear and tear when moving out of a rental, meaning tenants shouldn’t have to pay restoration costs for it.

※This article was compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Nandemo Jikkyō G) thread “Customer: “My Nitori sofa wore out after 5 years. Despite the 5-year warranty, I was told wear and tear isn’t covered”.”

  • The Brutal Life Gap at 40: 5ch Thread — “I’ve Got 800 Million Yen and It Still Feels Empty”

A thread on 5ch’s “Morning Musume” board (which in practice tends to attract general chit-chat threads with nothing to do with the idol group) sparked discussion about the stark “gap” in life outcomes among people in their 40s. It started with a post noting that some people marry, build families, and live steady lives, while others stay single, still absorbed in their hobbies — and replies poured in citing hard numbers, like “My assets hit 800 million yen and it still feels empty” and “I’m a full-time employee but only take home 110,000 yen a month.” The discussion eventually spiraled into a clash over whether having a family counts as “stability” or a “liability,” and into the social backdrop facing Japan’s “employment ice age” generation.

    1AnonymousSep 6, 2026 11:17
Some guys are cruising through their 40s just fine — married, bought a house, raising kids — while others are still basically middle schoolers who do nothing but play games, watch anime, and jerk off. It's a brutal age for comparing notes.

The 'parent gacha' (slang for the luck of which family you're born into) is brutal, isn't it. Way too much inequality.
    29AnonymousSep 6, 2026 11:53
Isn't it more of a 'gene gacha' than a 'parent gacha'? Looks, intelligence, personality — about two-thirds of it comes down to genetics. And disease risk too, of course.

A kid with a flashy 'kirakira' name (an unconventional, showy given name) who's every bit as much of a failure as their parents and is basically guaranteed to end up a kodo-oji (an adult man still living at home with his parents) — that's a real drain on the nation.

    Re: #42
In an age where nobody dates anymore, if you've got the cash, go to a nice soapland or some other sex-work spot with a good-looking girl and screw yourself silly — you'll get sick of it eventually. Everyone's babbling about late-life divorce, being single, 'time-performance,' 'cost-performance' — Gen Z in the Reiwa era has it all jumbled together. Calling it a waste? Then spend the money and go wild. These days, for the Reiwa generation, romance is just another form of entertainment. If you've got no money, just give up.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Despite its name, the “Morning Musume” board is mostly used for late-night chit-chat threads that have nothing to do with the idol group, and this thread was no exception, unfolding as a discussion on life philosophy unrelated to any specific idol. The “employment ice age generation” mentioned in the thread refers to the cohort that entered the job market from the late 1990s through the early 2000s, when new-graduate hiring collapsed — a group still said to be affected today through higher rates of non-regular employment. Some posts pointed to labor market reforms as a contributing factor, but that reflects individual opinions from a handful of posts rather than an established causal fact. The discussion tends to get framed around a “family: liability or stability?” divide, but the replies also raised cases of married people struggling financially and single people with assets who still feel empty — suggesting the reality can’t be fully explained by a simple married/single binary.

  • ‘Tell Me a Useful Website’ Thread Gets Flooded with Replies — 5ch User Finds an ‘Akiya Bank’ for Vacant Houses

In a thread titled “Tell Me a Site That’s Actually Useful,” posted on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board, users began chiming in one after another with handy websites and tools they use in daily life. Topics ranged widely — from practical tools like garbled-text (mojibake) fixers, roundups of free alternatives to paid software, and tips for speeding up Windows, to a government-run “Akiya Bank” for searching vacant houses, a consultation hotline for organic farming, a page explaining the benefits of decluttering, and even software for recovering deleted files. One poster even cited their source, noting “I heard about this on VIP before” — turning the thread from idle chatter into a genuine exchange of practical knowledge.

    Background and Talking Points

“Tell me a useful website” threads are a recurring staple on 5ch, known for pulling in everything from everyday life tips to software and gadget tricks. Notably, several of the links shared in this thread point to Web Archive snapshots — worth keeping in mind, since some of the original sites have already been shut down or deleted and can now only be viewed in archived form. There was also a post asking how to get hold of old apps no longer available for download, and even the person answering admitted they weren’t entirely sure of the details. The recommended sites reflect individual posters’ personal experience only and haven’t been vetted by any moderator or expert. Anyone planning to actually use them should check the update dates and the reliability of the source for themselves.
