  • Sasaki Roki Fires Scoreless Relief Outing, Hits Personal-Best 164.3 km/h (102 mph)

On 5ch’s live-game-thread board (“Nandemo Jikkyo G”), Sasaki Roki’s scoreless postseason relief outing became a hot topic. Despite issuing two walks and a hit-by-pitch in the first inning, he shut down every batter after that, and his top speed of 164.3 km/h broke his regular-season personal best of 163.9 km/h. Opinions in the thread split between praise for “getting results despite control problems” and worry that he’s “too scary to trust” and only “got bailed out by his own wildness,” with the discussion spilling over into Yamamoto Yoshinobu’s workload and Ohtani Shohei’s hitting slump.

Yamamoto Yoshinobu, forced to carry the team again

    Background and Talking Points

Sasaki Roki, Ohtani Shohei, and Yamamoto Yoshinobu are all teammates on the Dodgers, and Sasaki has increasingly been used in relief during the postseason. In this outing, he struggled with control — issuing two walks and a hit-by-pitch in the first inning — but shut down the batters who followed and finished scoreless, with his top speed of 164.3 km/h breaking his regular-season personal best of 163.9 km/h. The thread split between those praising him for “getting results regardless of the stat line” and skeptics arguing that control shaky enough to walk batters — even when borderline pitches get called balls — is “too scary to rely on.” Looking only at the scoreless result makes the outing seem dominant, but the headline alone doesn’t convey that he was pitching out of trouble with runners on almost every batter.

  • Lunch in Japan Now Costs Around ¥1,500 — 5ch Reacts: ‘Fifteen Hundred Yen? …Fine, I Guess’

On 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo” (Anything Live) board, a thread exploded over lunch now routinely costing around ¥1,500. Posters swapped specific shops and prices — “¥1,200 is the going rate in Tokyo,” “Yayoiken gives you all-you-can-eat rice for ¥1,000” — while mockery aimed at people who eat out clashed with pushback from the restaurant side, who argued that passing rising labor costs on to customers is simply unavoidable. Many also pointed out that pay raises haven’t kept pace with inflation, exposing a deeper divide between those who cook at home and those who eat out.

Well, that's probably part of it, but
just making a bit extra at dinner the night before works fine as a side dish
    I discovered this myself

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The rise in restaurant prices stems not just from higher ingredient costs but from restaurants passing on rising labor costs to customers. In the thread, posters on the restaurant side explained that raising prices to cover wage increases is simply common sense, suggesting it’s a mismatch to view the hikes as mere “opportunism” or “price gouging.” At the same time, some pointed out that pay raises haven’t kept pace with rising social insurance costs and inflation — a structural issue felt more acutely by workers at small and midsize companies than at large corporations. Where opinions in the thread diverged was over whether relying on eating out is a matter of personal responsibility or a structural problem: home cooks who dismissed those who eat out as “idiots” never quite squared off against the more relative point that Japanese dining out remains cheap by global standards. The thread also saw a “rich vs. poor” framing thrown around, but this was exaggerated rhetoric within the discussion, not based on any actual income-distribution data presented.

A photo posted on X (formerly Twitter) captioned “This is literally every college student’s outfit these days,” showing an oversized T-shirt paired with wide sweatpants, went viral and racked up over 10,000 likes. On a 5ch thread on the “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board, users reacted with comments like “Must be nice being able to go outside in your pajamas” and “I thought wide pants had already gone out of style.” Over why sweats-style outfits have become the norm, opinions split between those who called it “just another swing of a pendulum the fashion industry has always had” or “people simply spending less money on clothes,” and younger posters who countered that “deliberately not dressing up IS the new dressing up” — exposing a generational divide in how the look gets read.

Balancing it out with accessories is a given, but honestly I think this strays from dress-casual theory
since both the top and bottom are full-on casual loungewear

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The habit of wearing sweats and oversized T-shirts — essentially loungewear — as actual outdoor clothing is often described as an extension of the “comfort-wear mindset” that spread after the COVID-19 pandemic, and this thread can be read in that same light. Within it, an older-generation view that “they’re just following a trend with no real agency of their own” collided with the younger generation’s own stance that “deliberately not dressing up IS the stylish choice,” and the two sides talked past each other without ever really meeting. Worth noting: the photo in the original post likely doesn’t represent “college students in general” so much as a cherry-picked image of the kind that spreads easily on X. Some in the thread also pointed out that “there’s always been a segment dressed like this, going back to the delinquent/yankee subculture era,” suggesting this isn’t necessarily a brand-new phenomenon so much as a longstanding group of people who don’t spend money on clothes. A theory that the trend originated in Korea was also floated, but with no evidence offered, so it shouldn’t be taken as settled.

  • Natsuyaki Miyabi Still Has Unfinished Business With Singing — Thread Spirals Into Hello! Project Vocal-Skill Debate

Former Berryz Kobo and Buono! member Natsuyaki Miyabi posted a video of herself singing a Hello! Project song, and it set off a lively thread on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. Alongside comments praising Natsuyaki’s vocal ability itself, posters kept comparing her singing style to that of fellow Buono! member Dambara Ruru, as well as Tanaka Reina and Suzuki Airi. Supportive takes (“Miyabi could just be the guide vocalist at this point”) appeared right alongside harsher ones about her popularity (“she’s not the type who can make it outside the ‘village’”), and the thread widened into a debate about how singing ability and commercial success don’t always go hand in hand.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Natsuyaki Miyabi is a former member of Berryz Kobo and Buono!, and this thread started after she posted a video of herself singing a Hello! Project song. The “guide vocal” (仮歌) mentioned in the replies refers to a temporary vocal take recorded before the official version, and the question of who handles guide vocals is the kind of topic only fans familiar with Hello! Project’s behind-the-scenes workings would raise. The thread also brings up how fellow Buono! member Nihei recently drew attention online over an unrelated matter, reflecting shifting name recognition within the group. Opinions in the thread are split — some say she “has the vocal skill but lacks individuality” or “wouldn’t sell outside the ‘village’” — reflecting a debate common in the entertainment and idol world: that vocal talent and commercial success don’t always go together.

*This article is an excerpt and summary based on the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “Natsuyaki Miyabi Apparently Still Has Unfinished Business With Singing.”

  • Served Someone Else’s Canceled Ramen — 5ch Says It’s Just Like a ‘Nearly-New’ Used Car

The post on 5ch described an incident at a ramen shop. Right after the poster placed an order, another customer’s ramen was finished and brought to their table — but that customer suddenly had something urgent come up, canceled on the spot, and left. The shop then served that very bowl to the poster instead, leaving them feeling “unsettled” about it. The thread split into two camps: the practical types who argued “there’s nothing wrong with the food itself, so just eat it,” and those who felt psychologically uneasy, saying “I don’t want something that was made for someone else.” The debate escalated into comparisons with “nearly-new used cars” and “previously booked hotel rooms.”

    1AnonymousOct 5, 2026 09:55
    I ordered a ramen.
Then another customer's ramen order was finished and carried over to their table.
But that customer suddenly had something urgent come up, canceled the ramen, and left the shop.
    2AnonymousOct 5, 2026 09:56
Going to a ramen shop in the first place — that rock-bottom dump — was your mistake right there.
    3AnonymousOct 5, 2026 09:56

I want to be treated as special.

Used room, used bed — same thing.
    19AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:06
    Re: #11
    Exactly.
It has to be a brand-new room with a brand-new bed.
    25AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:09
Re: #11 That analogy doesn't hold up.
In this case, the issue isn't that your own order is wrong — it's that someone else's order got handed to you instead.
A canceled hotel room isn't "a room someone else ordered" being handed off — that's just a vacant room, plain and simple.
    12AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:03
If it's before they've served it to that other customer, I'd eat it without a second thought.

    15AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:04

    36AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:13
There are surprisingly a lot of people who say they don't want secondhand chopsticks.
They seem to ask for disposable ones or bring their own chopsticks.

    But
nobody brings their own ramen bowl.
Everyone eats out of a used bowl.
    37AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:15
The unease in this case isn't about secondhand bowls.
There's no such thing as a customer demanding to be served in a brand-new bowl in the first place.

I get a little hesitant when the cutlery is all piled together in one spot.
If spoons, knives, and forks are laid out on their sides, other customers might've been pawing all over them,
and if I peek into the bottom of the chopstick holder I might lose my appetite entirely.
    45AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:19
    Well, I get it, somewhat.
If you focus only on the item you were actually served, there doesn't seem to be a real problem.

On the other hand, I also get the feeling of "why am I suddenly stuck with a liability the shop should've eaten" or "don't get lazy on me over a few hundred yen."

Right now I feel the same unease as the original poster, but if I were back in college I probably would've just accepted it without a second thought.
I was broke back then — after a drinking party, once the group at the next table left, we'd all dig into their leftovers.
    50AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:27

Totally made-up story ("uso-matsu" — 5ch slang for an obviously fabricated anecdote).
The staff would repeat the order back to confirm it, come on.
    58AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:56
If it's set down right in front of the customer who canceled it, that'd feel bad.
It's basically a "nearly-new" used car, in car terms.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

This kind of “I was served a canceled order” anecdote touches on an area of restaurant etiquette that isn’t formally spelled out anywhere. Hygienically there’s no issue, since the food was never touched — but what split the thread was something more psychological: the “value” of the item as a product versus whether it was made specifically for you. Some pointed out that perception shifts with price, saying their reaction would differ between a roughly 700-yen item and one over 1000 yen. There were also counterarguments that comparisons like “nearly-new used cars” or “previously booked hotel rooms” miss the real point — in practice, this comes down less to a hygiene issue and more to differences in individual sensibility and personality.

  • Is “Japan Is the World’s Most Livable Country” Actually True? 5ch Weighs In

A thread titled “Japanese people say ‘Japan is the world’s most livable country’ — is that actually true?” appeared on 5ch’s “Nanademo Jikkyo G” (Live Broadcast General) board, pitting posters who cited public safety, infrastructure, and welfare support for the vulnerable against those who pointed to Japan’s high teen suicide rate, death from overwork, and rising prices. When the conversation turned to how “happiness” should even be measured, some argued that people distrust happiness indexes yet blindly cling to Japan’s good image anyway. In the end, the debate centered less on whether Japan is truly number one and more on what the word “livable” is even supposed to mean.

Different era, when working around the clock was a status symbol.
People probably found more fulfillment in work back then than they do now

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The “happiness index” referenced in the thread likely points to the UN-affiliated World Happiness Report, a measure that factors in not just healthcare and public safety but satisfaction with personal relationships and freedom to make one’s own life choices — which is why Japan, despite its strength in safety, hygiene, and economic scale, often fails to crack the top ranks in a given year. The result shifts depending on whether you measure by objective indicators or subjective satisfaction, and the thread’s disagreements trace straight back to that mismatch in assumptions. The point that suicide makes up a large share of teen deaths also cuts the other way: it reflects the flip side that fewer teens are dying from disease or accidents, so the counterargument that it’s premature to judge a country’s quality from a single ranking hits the mark. At the same time, the rising number of child suicides and the existence of death from overwork sit on an entirely different axis from public safety — and the thread lays bare how verdicts split depending on which group, and which slice of life, the word “livable” is even meant to describe.

  • Total Cigarette Ban: ‘90% Support’ but It Never Happens — 5ch Debates Why

A thread asking for and against a total cigarette ban took off on 5ch’s “Nanimo Jikkyo G” board. First came a flame war over the reliability of the poll cited at the top — “68 in favor (88.3%)” — with posters trading accusations about dubious methodology and sourcing versus others defending the numbers. The discussion then moved to the real question: if a majority supports a ban, why hasn’t it happened? Posters raised one reason after another for why outright prohibition hasn’t happened — tobacco tax revenue, comparisons with alcohol, the possibility of shifting to e-cigarettes, and the problem of littered cigarette butts.

Honestly, even with a ban people would just switch to e-cigarettes — the real problem is the massive tax revenue pulled from tobacco.
In terms of pure health damage, alcohol is like 10x worse for your body than cigarettes, but nobody's calling for alcohol to be banned.

If people could at least switch over to e-cigarettes, would that cut down on these problems?

Background and Key Points of This Debate

It’s worth noting that the “88.3% in favor” figure cited at the top of the thread is an unofficial tally from within 5ch itself, not a nationwide public opinion poll. In reality, Japan has strengthened passive-smoking measures through the revised Health Promotion Act (enacted 2020), but no policy to ban the sale of cigarettes outright is currently on the table. One reason for this is the existence of tobacco tax as a stable source of revenue — nationally and locally combined, it reportedly brings in roughly 1 trillion yen a year, and how to replace that revenue became one of the thread’s talking points. Posters also debated, in parallel, why there’s no similar push to ban alcohol despite its health risks, whether a shift to e-cigarettes might ease these problems, and etiquette issues like littered cigarette butts — though no clear conclusion was reached. Since the latter half of the original thread was dominated by a long back-and-forth over the reliability of the poll numbers, this article focuses mainly on the portion of the debate concerning smoking bans and separation of smoking areas.

  • German-Speaking Internet’s ‘Ditch Big Tech Day’: Paying for Claude Code Sparks Debate Over the Irony

On the German-speaking decentralized social network Lemmy, the community c/dach has a monthly tradition tied to its recurring ‘di.day’: members report on what they’ve done that month to reduce their dependence on Big Tech companies like Google and Amazon. This time, the thread’s original poster revealed they were using the AI coding assistant Claude Code to build a homemade alternative to Duolingo for learning French. That drew a pointed question — ‘Isn’t paying for Claude Code to escape Big Tech kind of a joke?’ — along with a nitpicky aside about whether Anthropic even counts as a ‘Konzern’ (German for a large corporate conglomerate) rather than just a single company. Other participants chimed in with the Google- and cloud-free alternatives they actually use, including Joplin, Anki, the home inventory/budgeting app Grocy, and the VPN service Tailscale.

    1Anonymous2026-10-04 12:36
What's everyone making their project for today's 'di.day'?
Well, since most of us have already switched to Linux, the 'momentum' has died down a bit, but — what did you do this month to get away from Big Tech?
I did something a little contradictory. I signed up for Claude Code and I'm working on building a truly 'personal computer.' Basically, I'm going through the apps and software I use day to day and using Claude Code to build my own local, private replacements. Right now, for example, I'm building a custom French-learning tool for myself, and once it's done I won't need Duolingo anymore.

There is one, but running it needs a graphics card with 16GB or more of VRAM.

As for whether it's even worth using in the first place, I think this video covers it really well:

    https://youtu.be/y85nqc2zm7M

Background and key points of this discussion

‘di.day’ is part of a broader ‘digital sovereignty’ movement that has taken root across the German-speaking internet: once a month, people gather to report on steps they’ve taken to cut their reliance on major US tech companies like Google and Amazon, and this has become an established tradition within a corner of the decentralized social network Lemmy. Behind it lies an awareness of EU data protection rules (GDPR) and a general unease about dependence on US-based cloud services — a culture of running home servers and self-hosted tools that’s considerably more entrenched there than in Japan. The thread raised the irony of using the AI coding assistant Claude Code as a tool for ‘escaping Big Tech,’ which spiraled into a nitpicky side debate over whether Anthropic should even be called a giant conglomerate (‘Konzern’) in the first place. Note that part of the thread also contained an unverified claim linking Anthropic’s AI to actual military operations, but since no evidence was provided for it, this article does not cover that claim.

※This article is an excerpt and summary based on the 5ch (Lemmy c/dach) thread ‘Was ist euer Projekt zum heutigen di.day?‘.

  • Video of Fan Dumping Beer Right in Front of Yokohama Stadium’s Beer Vendor Girl Sparks Debate

A video showing a fan at Yokohama Stadium (“Hama-Stan”) dumping out beer he’d just bought from a beer vendor girl, right on the spot, became a hot topic on the 5ch “Live Game Threads” (Nandemo Jikkyo G) board. Multiple posters noted that some customers buy cup after cup just to keep chatting with the vendor. Some argued it would be simpler to just hand her cash as a tip directly, while others countered that this is a “gray area” since a vendor accepting cash tips from customers could get her fired. The thread also touched on how thin commission cuts and the shift to cashless payments affect vendors’ income, with opinions split on whether dumping the beer is really an appropriate way to show appreciation.

Middle-aged guys who come alone and sit on the aisle side of the infield seats are almost always there for the beer vendors.
They drag out the conversation every time they buy a beer, then just stare at their phone until she comes back around, over and over.
They probably never get to talk to women in everyday life.

If she hides her face with a mask and a hat on the way home, maybe he wouldn't recognize her?
Writing this out, it occurs to me that vendors and concession stands wrapping up relatively early isn't just about closing prep —
it might also be a way to get them out early and protect them from guys like this.
Today's extra-innings game at Hama-Stan, for instance — if they'd kept selling until the very end, sales would've been pretty huge.

    Background and Points of Debate

Draft-beer vendors at ballparks are a popular part-time job, but their commission is said to be only around 10-20% of sales, and back when cash payments dominated, time spent interacting with customers translated directly into earnings. The thread’s suggestion that “you could just hand over a tip directly” was met with the counterargument that “accepting cash could get her fired” — likely reflecting the common practice of teams and operating companies prohibiting vendors from directly receiving money from customers. That said, the video’s filming date, who posted it, and the buyer’s actual intent were never confirmed within the thread itself, so it’s worth keeping in mind that most of the opinions, pro or con, are speculation based on each poster’s own game-watching experience.

※This article is compiled as an excerpt/summary from the 5ch (Nandemo Jikkyo G) thread “[Video] Beer Vendor at Yokohama Stadium Lets Customer Buy a Beer Just to Dump It in Front of Her“.

  • “Can I Have Just a Bit More to Drink?” Thread Spirals Into Drinking Snacks and Gadget Bragging

A one-line thread titled “Can I have a little more to drink?” that popped up on 5ch’s Nnews VIP board kept spiraling outward — from bragging about drinking snacks to showing off kitchen gadgets, and even to live commentary on a browser game. Talk drifted from food like seared bonito (katsuo tataki), cheese, and a supermarket chain’s absurdly cheap giant apple pie, to vacuum-seal storage bags and how to use a hot sandwich maker, and even off into a game called “Moji Blade” where players battle with spinning-top letters. There was no real conclusion or debate — just everyone posting whatever they liked in a loose, rambling thread typical of the evening drinking hours.

I'm in Aichi, but I go to Gifu sometimes too

Since I own this, as a drinker I really want to try buying raw eel and grilling it plain (shirayaki-style) to drink with, at least once!!

Looks like you could have fun with all kinds of things!

    The bottom part is noisy
    74AnonymousOct 5, 2026 00:53
For some reason I thought yakitori was the only thing you could use that for
    Guess eel works too
    76AnonymousOct 5, 2026 00:54
    Re: #74
Plenty of people use this for yakiniku too!
    75AnonymousOct 5, 2026 00:53
    Re: #69
Honestly I've only used it a few times lol

    Re: #70

    Is it really that loud?
    (That wasn't even a pun…)
    77AnonymousOct 5, 2026 00:54
Oh right, Anago-san showed up in the Vivant dub — that can only mean one of two things: he's the final boss, or he's about to get yelled at by his wife (a running joke about the voice actor's typecasting)

    Re: #74
If it can be grilled, pretty much anything's fine!

    Re: #75
Since you've got it, use it a lot!

    Re: #77
Didn't he say "Fuguta-kun"? (a nod to a familiar catchphrase)

    Re: #75
A proper young lady wouldn't worry about stuff like that
Isn't wiping off the grease Sebastian's job? Dunno though
    83AnonymousOct 5, 2026 00:59

For grilling meat, there's also something like this!
Once it gets colder I'll enjoy standing in the kitchen eating yakiniku rice bowls ^q^

You've got that nicely broken in!

Those stuffed-pepper things — raw bell peppers stuffed with taco meat and topped with cheddar are insanely good, you should really try it
Honestly it's tasty even without cooking it!

    Re: #115
I sometimes do it with meat sauce too!

    Re: #116
    Won with fire! lol

First thing you do is test it out, right
    This one was strong

    135AnonymousOct 5, 2026 01:40

This might be a pretty terrible game lol

You already know it's a terrible game going in, that's the whole point

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The supermarket chain that came up repeatedly in the thread is a home-center-and-grocery chain centered on the Chubu region that has partnered with the home center Kohnan to expand into Kanto and Kansai. Locally it’s known for its well-stocked fresh fish counters and prepared foods, but in some areas it’s not well known, and several posts in the thread asked what kind of store it even was. The “Moji Blade” game that came up later is a one-off joke-style browser minigame posted on an indie game site, where letters of text battle each other like spinning tops (beigoma). There’s no single consistent point of debate running through the thread — it’s a textbook example of a late-night VIP chat thread, drifting loosely from topic to topic as people post photos of their drinking snacks and kitchen gadgets.
