  • “A Day of Depression Ends with a Convenience Store Run” — Thread Splits Over How Severe That Really Is

A thread that began with the post “When you’re in a depressive state, any hope for the future disappears, and your days off end with nothing more than a trip to the supermarket or convenience store” caught fire on 5ch. Responses split over how to gauge the severity of the symptoms, with some arguing “real depression means you can’t even manage to go shopping” and others countering “you go shopping because you’ll die if you don’t.” The discussion branched into other flashpoints too — “would getting 100 million yen cure it?” and “is depression really that easy to get diagnosed with?” — as people who’d been through it traded experiences.

Once you're in a depressive state, that "hope for the future" disappears completely. Everything you do gets dominated by a feeling of "it's such a hassle," and you end up constantly worrying about money and your health.
Your personality darkens too — you get irritated by little things, sink into gloom, and keep blaming yourself over and over. Even on your days off, you think, "wherever I go I'll just get tired, so right now I just want to save money," and end up staying home all the time, which only makes things worse.

There are people who end up in that kind of confused, catatonic state. Some stop drinking water entirely, get rushed to the hospital with dehydration, and are admitted on the spot — bedridden with an antidepressant drip running nonstop.

    Re: #74
It's not that common to get diagnosed with an anxiety disorder when your symptoms are actually depression.
Sure, there's depression with a strong anxiety component, but that's not usually the main issue there.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

International diagnostic criteria generally define depression as symptoms like depressed mood or loss of interest and pleasure persisting for most of the day, nearly every day, for at least two weeks — so the point raised in comment #49 is broadly accurate. That said, severity varies widely: cases range from the kind described in comment #32, where dehydration leads to emergency hospitalization and IV treatment, all the way to milder cases where the person can still manage to go shopping. Much of the thread’s disagreement over what counts as “real depression” comes down to this gap in severity. It’s also worth noting that “new-type depression” isn’t an official medical term — it’s more commonly used as slang for cases where symptoms only flare up around work, which likely explains some of the skepticism toward it. As for how easily depression gets diagnosed, in practice people are often first treated for insomnia or anxiety disorders before eventually being diagnosed with depression, so it isn’t necessarily as instant a process as some suggest.

  • Japanese Women Who Went to Korea for Unification Church ‘Mass Weddings’ to File Compensation Claims

The National Network of Lawyers Against Spiritual Sales, which handles relief for former Unification Church (Family Federation for World Peace and Unification) victims, held a meeting on the 26th and revealed that at least around 10 Japanese women who traveled to South Korea for the group’s mass wedding ceremonies in the 1980s and ’90s are preparing to file compensation claims with the church’s liquidator, citing psychological distress. The mass weddings peaked from roughly 1988 to 1995, and an estimated 7,000 Japanese women believers are said to have gone to Korea to take part. On the thread, commenters debated why the male believers rarely come up in these stories, whether someone can seek damages while still remaining a believer, and the late former PM Shinzo Abe’s past ties to the church.

The National Network of Lawyers Against Spiritual Sales (Zenkoku Benren), which handles relief for victims of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (the former Unification Church), held a meeting on the 26th, revealing that some Japanese women who went to South Korea through the church’s mass weddings are preparing to file compensation claims with the church’s liquidator over psychological suffering. At least around 10 such people are said to exist.

According to Zenkoku Benren, the mass weddings peaked around 1988–95. An estimated 7,000 Japanese women believers are said to have gone to Korea after taking part in the ceremonies.

Many were matched by founder Sun Myung Moon with South Korean men they had never met, then married them. Many of those who have consulted Zenkoku Benren are reportedly living under harsh economic and psychological conditions.

Isn't the doctrine basically: Japanese people are descendants of the devil and Koreans are descendants of angels, so it's fine to exploit Japanese people however much you want; the world will be unified with Korea at its center; and Sun Myung Moon is the messiah? Sounds like a Christian cult built on exactly that.

    Re: #194
That's exactly how much devotion the church demands of you. In other words: rack up good numbers on donations and recruiting new members — and this is the prize you get for it.

Background and Key Points of Debate

The former Unification Church was ordered dissolved by the Tokyo District Court in 2023, and liquidation proceedings for the group have been underway since. The mass weddings, called “Blessings” bestowed by founder Sun Myung Moon, have continued since the 1960s, and as the article notes, participant numbers surged around 1988-95. Worth noting: while at least around 10 people are reported to have consulted Zenkoku Benren, the figure of roughly 7,000 Japanese women who went to Korea is only an estimate. On the thread, opinions split over why male believers rarely come up in the discussion, and over how someone who still holds the faith could seek damages. On that point, according to the legal team, those preparing to file claims are mostly former believers who have already broken free of the brainwashing — continuing to believe and seeking damages aren’t legally contradictory. It’s also worth flagging, as background the article text alone doesn’t fully convey, that many second-generation believers were effectively forced into these marriages from childhood by the church’s doctrine.

  • Rice Prices Drop, and ‘Free Extra Rice’ Makes a Comeback as Bento Shops and Restaurants Cut Prices

Rice market prices, after their earlier spike, have now turned downward — and bento shops and restaurants are increasingly bringing back discounted “extra-large rice” servings and “free refills.” With overall inflation keeping customers away, the aim is to win them back by cutting the price of their staple food, rice. Meanwhile, on the forum thread, many posters complained that convenience store onigiri and packaged rice show no sign of getting cheaper and remain stuck at high prices, drawing frustration and sarcasm over the uneven response across different types of businesses. Whether the price cuts spread further remains uncertain, tangled up with rising costs for materials and labor.

    Yomiuri Shimbun Online

Rice market prices, which had spiked temporarily, have now fallen, and takeout and dine-in restaurants are increasingly reviving discounted “extra-large rice” servings and “free refills.” As soaring prices for food and other goods weigh on household budgets, the move aims to secure customers by cutting the price of their “staple food.” At the same time, material and labor costs continue to rise, and attention is focused on how far rice price cuts will spread. Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Rice prices, after a temporary spike in recent years (the so-called “Reiwa rice crisis”), have been trending downward as supply has stabilized. However, how quickly the price cuts get passed on varies by business type. As pointed out on the thread, convenience store onigiri and packaged rice face circumstances like “can’t lower prices until last year’s high-priced stock is used up” and “packaging and shipping costs are a separate expense.” Behind why bento shop price hikes haven’t reversed is the rise in costs for ingredients other than rice, such as chicken, along with labor costs, plus the fact that more shops are going out of business due to soaring costs for materials like plastic containers. The thread was split between those simply welcoming the return of price cuts and free refills, and those frustrated that “only some business types are keeping prices high without cutting.” Underlying this is the structural reality that the price of takeout and restaurant food isn’t determined by the cost of rice alone.

The thread kicked off with a post saying, “I want to eat real mapo tofu.” The first replies pointed to Akasaka Sichuan Restaurant and to Chen Mapo Tofu (Chengdu, Sichuan Province, founded 1862), said to be the birthplace of the dish. From there the discussion branched into debates over authenticity — comments like “whether it suits Japanese tastes is a separate issue” and “the Japanese version falls flat because it leaves out Sichuan peppercorns.” Things ranged from “Marumiya’s retort-pouch mix is plenty good enough” all the way to tangents questioning whether the dish even needs to use tofu at all.

These days logistics have improved so you can get the same food anywhere in Japan,

These days it's such a nationwide staple that I'd think it's rare to find a Chinese person who doesn't know it.

You can find it at genuine Chinese places run by Sichuanese cooks, but it varies wildly by shop.
Some make you go 'what even is this?' it's so bad, others aren't that different from the Japanese version.
If they don't tone it down for Japanese customers it's way too spicy —
their "mildly spicy" is about equal to Japan's "medium spicy,"
and their real "medium spicy" is about equal to Japan's "extra hot."

Sprinkle on extra Japanese sansho pepper and it'll pass for it.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Mapo tofu is said to have been invented in 1862 by Chen Liu, the wife of the owner of a small Chengdu eatery called “Chen Xingsheng Fanpu” — a story the thread itself brings up — and the restaurant’s name is the origin of “Chen Mapo Tofu.” The dish took off in Japan largely thanks to the spread of retort-pouch seasoning mixes like Marumiya’s, which tone the flavor down for Japanese palates by cutting back on huajiao (Sichuan peppercorns, a spice similar to Japan’s sansho) — a difference from the authentic version that came up again and again in the thread. Opinions split over whether the goal should be chasing the authentic flavor, or whether a Japanese-adapted mapo tofu should be embraced as a valid dish in its own right. Posts #29, #31, and #32 (numbered >>39 in the original thread) also raised how, historically, the dish’s popularity varied by region even within China — worth flagging, since readers might otherwise assume mapo tofu had always been known nationwide there.

  • 69-Year-Old Father Marries 29-Year-Old Woman — Daughter Protests: “Come to Your Senses”

A 40-something unmarried woman was told by her 69-year-old father that he was marrying a 29-year-old woman — and her account, posted to Yahoo! News’ life-advice column, has become a hot topic on 5channel. The new wife is younger than his daughter, and alongside the shock of “a little brother might be born when I’m 44,” she voiced her anxiety over how the inheritance will be divided and who will handle her father’s future care. The thread saw a stream of practical takes on inheritance shares, forced-heirship calculations, and the risks of having children late in life — but plenty of commenters also questioned the article’s credibility, calling it “smells like fiction” and pointing out that the site is “a regular offender for clickbait pieces.”

    (details omitted)

Apparently, her now-69-year-old father suddenly told Sumire, “There’s someone I want you to meet.”

    Wife inherits ¥50 million
The 40-something daughter and her new half-brother get about ¥25 million each

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Under Article 900 of Japan’s Civil Code, a surviving spouse’s statutory share of an estate is one-half, and forced heirship generally follows the same ratio — so in this case too, the new wife stands a good chance of receiving close to half the estate. That’s the legal backdrop behind the thread’s repeated focus on inheritance shares. The claim that “an elderly father’s sperm raises a child’s risk of developmental disorders” isn’t baseless folklore either — it echoes actual research on the accumulation of sperm mutations with age. That said, commenters singled out specific outlets like Financial Field and Bengo4.com as frequent culprits in writing up these “life advice” testimonials purely to farm pageviews, so it’s worth keeping in mind that the story’s authenticity remains very much in question.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

This kind of “looks vs. personality” dilemma over choosing a spouse is a recurring staple on the Nanimo Jikkyo G board, and it’s worth remembering that the poster’s own assessment of his girlfriend’s looks is entirely subjective — the majority opinion in the thread doesn’t necessarily reflect mainstream values. The thread split mainly along two lines: first, a difference in romantic philosophy — whether genuine affection makes appearance a non-issue, or whether a mismatch in physical taste inevitably leads to a long-term clash of values and a breakdown of the relationship; second, whether it’s valid to choose a spouse based on the premise that a child’s looks are “hereditary.” That second point isn’t backed by any scientific argument — readers should note it’s purely anecdotal, impressionistic reasoning from an anonymous message board. The poster also revealed details about his girlfriend’s inner character, calling her an “oddball” who “hates men,” suggesting the real core of his dilemma isn’t just appearance, but compatibility in the relationship itself.

  • Atsushi Tamura Criticized for Keeping Hat On at Eel Restaurant — 5ch: ‘No One Says Anything at a Beef Bowl Joint’

Talent Atsushi Tamura posted a video on X showing himself eating at Uosei, an eel restaurant in Katsushika Ward, Tokyo, while wearing his hat — and after facing backlash, he pushed back, saying “No one complains when you eat with your hat on at a beef bowl chain.” On 5ch’s Geinou/Sports Breaking News+ board, comments clashed between those who didn’t understand why taking your hat off indoors is considered proper manners, and those who argued that keeping a hat on without the restaurant’s permission is simply rude — the debate spiraled into differences in upbringing and discipline. Many also pointed out how odd it is that the reaction changes depending on the type of restaurant.

Talent Atsushi Tamura updated his X (formerly Twitter) account on the 21st. After facing criticism for eating at an eel restaurant while keeping his hat on, he responded with a rebuttal.

It all started with a video Tamura posted on the 20th.

Tamura wrote, “For everyone who loves eel — this is a place you have to visit! I finally managed to get a reservation and enjoyed it ♪(´ε` )” and shared footage of himself enjoying a meal at Unagi Uosei, an eel restaurant in Katsushika Ward, Tokyo.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The custom of treating “take your hat off indoors” as a basic manner is said to trace back to the fact that hats themselves were introduced to Japan from Western culture, and it isn’t codified in any law or store policy. That’s why the thread never quite reconciled two positions: pushback against the logic that “not being told off means permission was granted,” and the view that “you should be able to tell without being told.” The differing treatment — tolerated at beef bowl chains and food courts, but scrutinized at upscale places like eel restaurants — also became a point of debate, but this reflects unspoken differences in expectations based on a restaurant’s class and clientele rather than any unified rule, which makes the whole issue easy to misread. The thread also saw a clash between people defending the practice by citing hiding baldness, and critics invoking upbringing and discipline, with the conversation often sliding from manners into judgments about the other side’s character. Conflicts over “manners” like this tend to escalate emotionally precisely because, the less codified the rule is, the more the standard varies depending on each person’s upbringing.

  • Former KAT-TUN Member Junnosuke Taguchi Announces Marriage, Reveals First Child

Former KAT-TUN member Junnosuke Taguchi (41) announced on September 22 that he has gotten married and that his first child has been born. Taguchi was arrested in 2016 on suspicion of violating the Cannabis Control Act and subsequently left KAT-TUN; his relationship with former actress Reina Komine (46), which was known to continue even after his arrest, drew renewed attention. On 5ch, speculation centered on whether Komine is the bride, with some arguing that given her age and inactive status it’s more likely an ordinary, non-celebrity woman — splitting opinion.

so breaking up is for the best — Noriko Sakai managed to quit after divorcing too.
Her ex-husband, though, got arrested three more times after the divorce.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Junnosuke Taguchi was arrested in 2016 on suspicion of violating the Cannabis Control Act, after which he left KAT-TUN. It was reported that he continued his relationship with former actress Reina Komine, whom he was dating at the time, even after the arrest. Following this announcement of marriage and the birth of his first child, opinion on 5ch split over whether Komine is the bride. Some argued it’s probably not her, citing her age (46), while others said it would make sense if it were Komine, pointing to the fact that the two didn’t break up even after the arrest. However, neither the source article nor the thread reveals the bride’s real name, so any identification of the partner remains purely speculative. It’s worth noting how easily speculation on anonymous forums can spread as though it were established fact.

Of course, you two are part of my family too” — accompanied by a three-shot photo with Kashiyuka and Nocchi.

I keep seeing articles about PORTER's new releases lately, and I was floored at how insanely the prices have climbed
    34AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:06
Didn't Porter have some kind of controversy recently?
    36AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:07
A-chan might be the skinniest of the three
Her build is different from the other two, who already look petite, so being the thinnest of the group is pretty extreme…
That's less "effort" and more sheer self-discipline…

    Getting married in Italy —
doesn't that come with some religious hassle?
Like having to attend church beforehand or something?
    49AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:15
Porter's price hikes are no joke
Their stores look like luxury boutiques now
when high schoolers used to carry their bags back in the day

    57AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:20

Might be a tight window for the other two to have kids at this point

Do they have more male fans than female fans?
I've heard a lot of the male fans are the "serious oshi-love" type (fans who treat it like an actual romantic relationship)

How carefree, getting married while Japan's going through a rough patch

    Background and Talking Points

Perfume has been in a self-described “cold sleep” hiatus since the end of 2025, and A-chan’s wedding announcement came during that period. The fact that the announcement date coincided with the group’s debut anniversary also appears to have been chosen deliberately to match her message. In the thread, speculation spread that the husband is “the heir to Yoshida Kaban (Porter),” but this is a guess readers drew from the post’s content, not an official statement from A-chan or her agency. There were also moments where discussion of Porter’s ever-rising prices generated more buzz than the wedding itself, and the thread’s tendency to drift from the main topic into tangential chatter is one of its notable features.

  • Is the ‘Meal-Cancelling Crowd’ Really Okay? The Hidden ‘Danger’ of Young People Justifying Not Eating

An AERA article covering the Gen Z internet slang term “the meal-cancelling crowd” became a hot topic on 5ch’s Breaking News board. The term describes skipping meals with the same casual mindset as cancelling an appointment, and the article warns of the danger in this normalizing and justifying “not being able to eat.” Opinions in the thread split over the real cause: some pointed to intentional mini-fasting for beauty purposes or the benefits of autophagy, while others took a cooler view, suggesting it’s really just an excuse to cover up “being too broke to eat” amid rising prices, or noted that people are simply forgetting to eat because they’re glued to their phones.

They're probably just so absorbed in their phones they forget to eat.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“The meal-cancelling crowd” is social-media-born slang referring to skipping meals with the same casual mindset as cancelling plans. The AERA article frames this as risky because it lets people casually justify not eating with a “well, whatever” attitude. What split opinion in the thread was how to interpret the phenomenon itself. Some saw it as deliberate fasting aimed at beauty or autophagy benefits, while others pointed to causes quite different from what the slang implies — that people are actually being forced to cut food costs due to rising prices, or are simply forgetting to eat because they’re absorbed in their phones. The “danger of justification” the article raises is concern over eating-disorder-like behavior becoming normalized, but it’s worth noting that most of the thread’s comments are fragmentary personal anecdotes, so there’s a gap in tone between them and that kind of medical concern.
