  • Hiroshi and the Manufacturer at the Center of the Controversy File a Police Report — 5ch: ‘The Fire Pit Known as Hiroshi’

A dispute has erupted over the design of a fire pit that comedian Hiroshi commissioned, with outdoor gear manufacturer “Warai’s” announcing it would file a police report over what it calls reputational damage. The thread is split over whether the criticism should be directed at Hiroshi himself or at the devoted fans who slandered the company in his defense, and it also sparked legal debate over design rights and the requirements for establishing defamation.

    Wed, Aug 26, 16:25

Outdoor gear manufacturer “Warai’s” updated its X account on the 26th, announcing it would file a police report in connection with its dispute with comedian Hiroshi.

Hiroshi, a pioneer of the “solo camping” boom, posted on X on the 17th of this month that he’d run into trouble: “I commissioned an original fire pit. I presented the specific shape I wanted made. The company I commissioned began production. Partway through making it, the manufacturer said it was going to start selling the same design itself.”

But the one thing Hiroshi did succeed at was turning everything he'd built up into kindling, and using it as fuel to complete a magnificent fire pit that's been blazing away for days now — the fire pit known as Hiroshi. 😭🙏🏻

・"Why did they develop it without permission when there was no contact?"
・"They're saying they improved it and released it, but isn't that basically an admission?"
Phrasing like this falls close to what's classified as "opinion/commentary."
It would likely be treated as "criticism based on the publicly disclosed facts," making it unlikely a disclosure request would be granted.

By contrast, definitive factual assertions like:
    ・"Company X committed a crime"
    ・"Company X is a scam company"
    ・"Company X stole intellectual property"
would make a disclosure request much more likely to succeed.

    Re: #149
Total silence — he's just posting his own videos and sponsor promos like nothing happened.

    Background and Key Points

Hiroshi (real name Hiroshi Shinagawa) built his post-manzai second career as Japan’s most visible face of “solo camping” (ソロキャンプ), turning a one-man tent-and-fire lifestyle into a YouTube and merchandising business; this dispute is significant precisely because his credibility as a gear-endorsing outdoorsman is the asset at stake. 5ch (formerly 2channel) is Japan’s largest anonymous forum, and threads like this one compile reactions to a breaking news story — here, an Yahoo News piece about outdoor brand “Warai’s” announcing on X that it would file a police report (被害届) over reputational damage. Readers should also know Japan’s insult law (侮辱罪) was tightened in 2022, making online pile-ons a real criminal-liability risk, and that “disclosure of sender information” requests (発信者情報開示請求) — used to unmask anonymous posters — succeed far more easily against flat factual accusations (“they committed a crime,” “they stole IP”) than against hedged opinion (“it’s odd they started production without a contract”).

The thread’s actual fault line isn’t Hiroshi-vs-Warai’s — nearly everyone agrees the report targets overzealous fans and posters who slandered the company defending him, not Hiroshi personally. The disagreement is over blame allocation: some posters think going after fans while sparing Hiroshi is legally convenient but morally dodges the real instigator; others insist reputational harm flows from Hiroshi’s original post, so he bears responsibility regardless of who typed the insults.

What outsiders likely miss: no contract or design registration existed between Hiroshi and Warai’s — he reportedly only requested a shape, not a finished design — meaning Japan’s utility-model (実用新案) framework, not patent law, governs whether copying is even actionable, and unregistered ideas generally aren’t protected at all.

  • BEYOOOOONDS’ New Song ‘Shoshi Sengan’ Revealed to Be Written by Former Bitter & Sweet Member Asahi Tazaki

It was revealed via JASRAC (Japan’s music rights organization) credits that the composer and lyricist behind BEYOOOOONDS’ new song “Shoshi Sengan” is Asahi Tazaki (nicknamed “Hoshibe”), a former member of Bitter & Sweet — sparking discussion on the Hello! Project board of 5ch.

Beyond dissatisfaction with the song itself, the thread’s discussion expanded to questions like why this direction was chosen for the group’s first release after adding new members, as well as the imbalance in how often Hoshibe gets tapped to write songs and differences in treatment between groups.

    Tsubaki Factory's "Ai = Un + En + On" ("Love = Luck + Bond + Gratitude").

    Background and Key Points

Hello! Project (H!P) is the umbrella agency/franchise behind idol groups like Morning Musume, Juice=Juice, Tsubaki Factory, and BEYOOOOONDS; songwriting and composition credits for these acts are often not announced with fanfare but only surface later through JASRAC, Japan’s music-rights registry, which is why fans treat a JASRAC listing as a “reveal.” Asahi Tazaki, nicknamed “Hoshibe,” is a prolific in-house-adjacent writer who has supplied songs across multiple H!P units; Bitter & Sweet was a now-disbanded H!P group whose catalog, once it went major-label, was almost entirely written by Hoshibe rather than by its own members, despite writing its own material as an indie act. BEYOOOOONDS itself just added three new members in June 2026 (Kojima, Otsubo, Sugiyama), making “Shoshi Sengan” effectively their post-addition reintroduction single.

The thread wasn’t really united in blaming Hoshibe personally — one poster explicitly reframes the issue as not “who wrote it” but why management chose this direction for a lineup-refresh single, and another accuses critics of only disliking the song after learning the composer’s name (bandwagon judgment rather than judging the track on its own merits). Alongside that, there’s a side debate about whether relying so heavily on one writer is sustainable at all, versus giving more chances to alternatives like Risa Kohira or letting AI generate songs instead.

What outsiders may not grasp: this reflects a real structural pattern in H!P, where a small pool of external writers (Tazaki, Kodama Ameko before her fees rose and she moved to M!LK, Hyadain, “Takui”) get shuffled across many otherwise musically distinct groups, so H!P group identities are often less about consistent in-house songwriting than about production packaging.

  • CUTIE STREET Resumes CD Sales on Reservation-Only Basis After Illegal Dumping Found Near Budokan

CD sales were suspended at CUTIE STREET’s Nippon Budokan concerts after a string of illegally dumped CDs was discovered, before sales resumed on the afternoon of the 25th switched entirely to a reservation-only system. On 5ch, criticism piled up against the “multiple-purchase” business model itself, in which fans are pushed to buy many copies of the same CD for the bonus items, while some also questioned Oricon’s chart methodology for continuing to use CD sales as its key metric.

    Sankei Sports, 2026/08/26 14:20

The official X account of idol group CUTIE STREET announced on the 26th that CD sales at their ongoing Tokyo Nippon Budokan concerts (running from the 25th) would resume via reservation sales. In a post that morning, the group had warned: “Yesterday, multiple instances of illegally dumped CDs were confirmed at Nippon Budokan and nearby facilities, so we will be suspending CD sales for the time being. Please absolutely refrain from illegal dumping.”

Just after 1 p.m., a follow-up post on X read: “Starting at 13:30, we will resume the CD sales and lottery event that had been temporarily paused. Please note that from the resumption of sales onward, all CDs will be sold strictly through reservation. Participation-prize postcards and scratch tickets will be handed out at the sales counter.”

    This isn't a wafer though
What would you even do with it

    Background and Key Points

CUTIE STREET is one of the newer idol groups on the “chika idol” circuit run by KAWAII LAB (an offshoot label associated with the same idol-industrial machinery Yasushi Akimoto, of AKB48 fame, is credited with formalizing). Nippon Budokan is the arena idol groups traditionally treat as a milestone venue, so a multi-night run there is a genuine career marker. The economic model underpinning the CD sales is the “multiple-purchase” scheme: each disc is a vehicle for a bundled extra — a handshake or lottery ticket, a raffle entry, a bonus postcard — rather than the music itself, incentivizing fans to buy dozens of identical copies. Because Oricon’s charts still weight physical CD units heavily, and TV shows report those rankings, groups have a direct commercial reason to keep selling this way even as digital and streaming options exist elsewhere in the industry (posters note KAWAII LAB itself reportedly has no streaming yet).

The thread’s disagreement isn’t over whether dumping CDs is bad — nobody defends the litter — but over where blame belongs: several posters (8, 18) argue the mass-dumping is a predictable symptom of a business model built to make one person buy many copies of the same CD, while others focus on individual fans as the wrongdoers for tossing content the group’s staff worked on.

What the thread never engages with is the regulatory angle: Japan doesn’t currently have a specific law barring this bundling practice, so “someone should crack down on this” (29) is aspirational rather than describing an existing legal remedy. Readers unfamiliar with the format may also assume the dumped CDs are literal trash rather than functionally-unwanted packaging around a paid raffle ticket, which is the point several posters (71, 93) are making with the Bikkuriman-wafer comparison.

  • Short-Sleeper YouTuber Daisuke Hori Vows Legal Action Over Unauthorized Reposts and Slander, Makes Most of His Stream Archive Private

Daisuke Hori, a “short sleeper” YouTuber with 70,000 subscribers, has made the bulk of his stream archive private and announced he’ll respond to unauthorized reposting and slander with legal action if necessary. On 5ch’s Geinou/Sports News+ board, posters piled on with skepticism about his sleep claims themselves and questions about why he chose this moment to lock down his archive.

Between August 25 and 26, “Daisuke Hori” (70,000 subscribers) updated his YouTube community posts. Posting under the name of the General Incorporated Association Japan Short Sleeper Development Association, which he heads, he reported that he had made most of his livestream archive private, and laid out a policy of responding to unauthorized reposting and slander with measures including legal action.

Public video count drops from 1,680 to 702

In a notice titled “Notice Regarding the Privatization of Livestream Archives” posted on the 25th, he first explained the situation: “We have confirmed instances of unauthorized reposting and copyright infringement involving footage and images from this channel (including membership-exclusive content) on external social media.” He then reported: “In order to prevent further damage and to consider our response going forward, we have made the bulk of the livestream archive from before August 24 private, with the exception of some streams.”

    Re: #85
Because in human evolution the brain evolved so much — developing tool use and so on — that the body just couldn't keep up.

    Background and Key Points

Japan’s “short sleeper” (ショートスリーパー) phenomenon centers on entrepreneurs who claim they trained themselves to function on very little sleep and now sell that method through seminars, books, and YouTube memberships. Daisuke Hori runs his operation under a “general incorporated association” (一般社団法人) — a corporate structure in Japan that anyone can register with minimal capital and no government vetting, unlike a “public-interest incorporated association” (公益社団法人), which does undergo state scrutiny. The official-sounding name gives the enterprise an air of institutional legitimacy that the legal status itself does not confer. Genuine natural short sleepers do exist and are studied by sleep scientists — they carry rare gene variants (e.g., DEC2) and typically sleep four to six hours, not the 30-minute figures associated with Hori’s brand — but mainstream sleep medicine does not support the idea that this trait can be taught to the general public.

The thread doesn’t split much over whether Hori’s claims are true — that’s near-unanimous skepticism — but over what the archive lockdown means and whether pursuing legal action is reasonable. Some read it as a tacit admission he’s been discredited by doctors and is now hiding evidence; others focus on the mechanics, urging him to livestream continuously to prove his claims can’t be faked by clipping.

What’s likely to go unmentioned: this is a paid membership operation (1,990 yen/month per one poster), so the copyright and defamation threats aren’t just reputational — leaked or freely reposted footage undercuts a subscription product built on scarce access to “proof.”

    Background and Key Points

DMM TV is the video-streaming arm of DMM.com, a Japanese e-commerce and media conglomerate whose better-known sister brand, FANZA, distributes adult content — hence the recurring joke telling DMM to “make it FANZA, not DMM.” That confusion matters because posters also mixed up the platform with Netflix mid-thread, showing how blurry Japan’s streaming landscape still is even to its own audience. Nagano Mei and Imada Mio are frequently profiled together as real-life best friends in Japanese entertainment media, which is why a magazine framing their non-collaboration as Imada “turning down” the role reads as loaded rather than neutral to posters. Ito Kentaro’s casting carries baggage too: he was involved in a traffic accident that dented his standing relative to Imada, who has remained a in-demand face for major ad campaigns and network drama.

The thread didn’t split over whether Imada declined — nearly everyone accepted that — but over why: a vocal minority insisted it was pure PR framing or agency-level maneuvering to avoid pairing a clean image with someone still associated with scandal, while others argued it’s simply mundane scheduling, since Imada’s calendar is reportedly packed with terrestrial TV and film work.

What outside readers likely miss is that “Himachi no Joou” is adapted from a webcomic on Shogakukan’s Manga One app — one poster’s skeptical aside about “using the Manga One source material” is the only hint of this in the thread, and no one explains what changes a TV adaptation might make to it.

    Background and Key Points

Miki Fujimoto, known by her idol-era nickname “Mikitty,” rose to fame as one of the most popular members of Morning Musume, Japan’s flagship all-female idol group, in the late 1990s and early 2000s. She is married to Koji Yamamoto, a former professional baseball catcher, and the couple has three sons; the eldest, whose rebellious phase she describes, is reportedly in the ninth grade (chugaku 3-nensei), the final year of Japanese junior high school. In Japan, the “rebellious phase” (hankouki) isn’t just a colloquial complaint — it’s a recognized developmental stage, the “second rebellious phase” (dai-ni-ji hankouki), widely discussed in parenting media and typically expected to run through the junior-high years before tapering off by the start of high school or shortly after. That expected timeline is exactly why “already year 5” struck posters as unusually long.

The thread’s actual fault line wasn’t really about the son’s behavior — almost everyone treated some rebellious phase as normal or even necessary for independence. The split was over cause and blame: one camp read Fujimoto’s “I do everything for him” line as proof of overbearing, smothering parenting that provokes and prolongs teenage pushback; another camp, and arguably the more repeated point, blamed the disclosure itself — that discussing an identifiable teenage son’s private struggles on national television is what’s actually humiliating him and fueling resentment.

What outside readers may not register is a Japanese-specific sensitivity: many celebrities here keep children’s identities and school lives strictly out of media, so parading a real, current, named struggle on air reads as a more serious boundary violation in Japan than the equivalent might elsewhere.

Hello! Project group Juice=Juice has been racking up appearances on major Japanese music programs — from the year-end countdown special straight through to Music Station and CDTV Live! Commenters praised the streak with remarks like “They’ve officially made it” and “Impressive that it’s all major shows,” while others speculated about the group’s internal pecking order and possible PR strategies behind the bookings.

    63AnonymousAug 26, 2026 11:06
If "flagship" or "No. 2 in the ranking" is all they've got to cling to, just let them have it

    Background and Key Points

Juice=Juice is one of the current subgroups under Hello! Project (H!P), the Up-Front Group idol umbrella whose flagship act is Morning Musume; Juice=Juice debuted in 2013 and sits alongside groups like Angerme and Morning Musume in H!P’s internal roster. The shows named in the thread are not interchangeable: Music Station (TV Asahi) and CDTV Live! Live! (TBS) are the two biggest weekly music broadcasts in Japan, alongside year-end events like FNS Music Festival and Best Hit Kayousai — slots overwhelmingly reserved for major-label pop and rock acts, not niche idol groups. That’s distinct from the smaller BS-TBS or regional programs also listed, which carry far less prestige. Landing seven straight months on the big broadcasts is unusual for any H!P unit.

The thread’s actual disagreement isn’t over whether the streak happened, but over what it means. Some posters read it as proof Juice=Juice has overtaken Morning Musume and Angerme in H!P’s informal pecking order; others push back that the ranking is seniority-based (tied to debut order), not a merit ranking that TV bookings could ever move, and a few dismiss the whole “pecking order” framing as pointless squabbling.

What the thread leaves unstated is how these bookings actually get decided: as one poster notes, producers often don’t scrutinize streaming or chart numbers closely — repeat bookings tend to reflect accumulated trust with a network built over prior appearances, not a live popularity contest, and clustering slots in one stretch (rather than spacing them out) simply reads as more impressive than it mechanically is.

    Re: #72
Back then, the whole 'hit TV show becomes a movie' business model didn't really exist yet
Though it did exist for anime

Actors at the time drew a sharp line between movies and TV dramas as separate worlds
Fuji TV was the one that erased that distinction through the '90s

    Background and Key Points

Bayside Shakedown (“Odoru Daisosasen” in Japanese) began as a 1997 Fuji TV drama and became one of the most commercially significant franchises in Japanese film history: its 2003 sequel grossed roughly 17.3 billion yen, a live-action box-office record that stood for years. The films built their identity on a specific ensemble — Yuji Oda’s detective Aoshima, Eri Fukatsu’s Sumire, and Toshiro Yanagiba’s Muroi Shinji — plus supporting officers like Kakei. A 2019 spinoff centered Muroi and appeared to close out his and Sumire’s arcs, marketed at the time as a “final chapter.” That history explains why longtime fans reacted to a cast list for a new “present day” special as though checking attendance at a reunion: this franchise’s commercial power was built on exactly these faces returning.

The thread’s actual disagreement isn’t about the new film’s prospects — nobody doubts it will sell tickets to an aging fan base — but about continuity: did Muroi and Sumire die in the earlier films, or not? Posters split between “Muroi clearly died of a heart attack after being forced into retirement” and “Sumire never died on screen, she just quit and went home,” with some arguing the show staged a death-like send-off purely for a visual effect that didn’t land, rather than as a narrative fact.

What outside readers likely miss is the production reason behind that confusion: actors were reportedly directed to play the farewell scene as if their characters had died, only for the story to later walk it back once a sequel was greenlit — meaning the ambiguity isn’t sloppy writing so much as a franchise rewriting its own ending after the fact.

  • ‘ER 24 Hours’ Revived After 13 Years: Eguchi Yosuke & Matsushima Nanako Reunite for Fuji TV’s First-Ever Monday 9pm Slot

Fuji TV’s hit medical drama “ER 24 Hours” (Kyuumei Byoutou 24-ji) is being revived after 13 years, with Eguchi Yosuke and Matsushima Nanako reuniting for the first time since a 2010 special — their first pairing in 16 years. The new series premieres October 12 in the show’s first-ever Monday 9pm (“Getsu9”) slot. On 5channel’s Entertainment & Sports News+ board, reactions ranged from criticism of networks leaning on past hits, to comparisons with the recent flop of similar projects like GTO, to calls for sequels to other franchises like The White Tower and Team Medical Dragon.

It was revealed on the 25th that actor Eguchi Yosuke (58) and actress Matsushima Nanako (52), who play emergency doctors, will star in Fuji TV’s “ER 24 Hours,” reviving the beloved series after 13 years. Running since 1999, this sixth installment of the drama series airs from October 12 in the show’s first-ever Monday 9pm (“Getsu9”) slot. The two leads reunite for the first time since a 2010 special — their first collaboration in 16 years — bringing fresh emotion to the network’s flagship medical drama.

Across the franchise, ten installments have aired including specials. Returning for the first time in 16 years since the 2010 special to play the series’ solitary genius protagonist, emergency physician Shindo Issei, Eguchi said with resolve: “Putting the scrubs back on reminds me it’s really starting — it focuses my mind.”

The “ER 24 Hours” franchise, which began as a regular series in 1999, depicts the struggles and triumphs of emergency doctors like Shindo and Kojima Kaede — the latter played by Matsushima, who grows from a first-installment resident into a seasoned physician. The pair delivered powerful performances portraying their characters’ earnest dedication to patients and life-or-death situations, alongside tense treatment scenes. Beyond the human drama, the series tackled social issues like staff shortages, medical errors, and disaster response, striking a chord with viewers — one season achieved a peak average household rating of 20.2% (Video Research, Kanto region).

Fuji TV's just paying the price for all its past misdeeds — viewers have turned their backs on it, so this won't work
As a last resort, rerunning old dramas in primetime would definitely pull better ratings

A White Tower rerun would be great

    Background and Key Points

Some background for non-Japanese readers: “Getsu9” (Monday 9pm) is Fuji TV’s most storied drama slot, the home of era-defining hits like “Tokyo Love Story” — a poster even jokes about wanting that show revived (52). That “ER 24 Hours,” a medical procedural, is filling that slot for the first time in its six-installment, 26-year history is itself the news; it signals Fuji is repurposing its flagship real estate rather than launching original romance fare. The 20.2% peak rating cited dates from Japanese primetime’s stronger era, before streaming fragmented audiences, which is why a revival is seen as a safer bet than new material.

The thread didn’t split over whether Eguchi and Matsushima are good casting — nobody contested that — it split over what the revival itself signals. One camp (28) shrugged that recycling proven IP is standard practice everywhere, Hollywood included; another (39) read it as an admission that Fuji has given up on attracting any audience but older, loyal viewers, with GTO’s recent failure (14, 38, 45) cited as the cautionary precedent.

What outside readers likely miss is post 61’s aside about Fuji TV “paying for its past misdeeds” — a reference to the network’s advertiser boycotts and reputational collapse following a 2024 scandal, which is the real subtext behind why Fuji is leaning on 25-year-old franchises rather than betting on new writers or talent. The thread treats that context as common knowledge and never spells it out, but it’s the actual reason skepticism here runs deeper than ordinary “sequel fatigue.”

  • Rui Kurihara Donates 31cm of Hair, Trades Long Locks for a Shoulder-Length Bob

Model and actor Rui Kurihara updated X with a makeover shot showing off a fresh cut — 31cm chopped off hair that used to reach past his chest, donated for a hair donation program. On 5ch, users discussed how hair donation works and the workload it puts on hairstylists, while others posted photos from his modeling days a decade ago, with many reacting to catching up on him for the first time in a while.

    Tue, Aug 25, 11:12 AM

Model and actor Rui Kurihara (31) updated X on August 24, posting a makeover shot showing off a dramatic haircut done for hair donation.

Kurihara wrote, “I had my hair cut for hair donation this time. I hadn’t cut it in a while, so I’d been hoping to do this whenever the next chance came up,” alongside photos taken at the salon. His hair, which had grown down past his chest, is now a bob above the shoulders — a striking change in look. In an Instagram post the same day, he also revealed that 31cm had been cut off.

    71AnonymousAug 25, 2026 17:00
    Re: #29
These days the customer sends it to the donation organization themselves, so it's not that much extra hassle.

    Re: #92
That's just how it goes if you don't watch his stage work.

    Background and Key Points

Hair donation in Japan runs through organizations like JHD&C (Japan Hair Donation & Charity), which collects donated hair to make free medical wigs for children and others who have lost hair to conditions like alopecia areata or cancer treatment. The programs typically require a minimum cut length — for JHD&C that’s 31cm — which is why donors often let their hair grow out for a year or more before finally cutting it all off at once, as Kurihara appears to have done.

The thread’s actual disagreement was over whether hair donation creates extra burden for the hairstylist doing the cut. One camp assumed it must be more work; others pushed back, noting that stylists tend to enjoy participating and that, increasingly, the customer mails the cut hair to the donation organization themselves rather than the salon handling that step — meaning the stylist’s job is just the cut itself.

What outside readers are likely to miss is the coincidence baked into the “31cm” detail: some posters briefly assumed it referenced Kurihara’s age (he’s also 31), but it’s simply JHD&C’s minimum accepted length, unrelated to him personally. Readers are also likely to gloss over a separate thread of confusion between Kurihara and another Japan-based model with a similar first name (Rui Yoshida), who is unrelated but has publicly discussed having ADHD — a mix-up multiple posters admitted to making themselves, and distinct from the ADHD diagnosis mentioned about Kurihara earlier in the thread. Non-Japanese readers may also miss the pun in posters ribbing Kurihara’s phrasing as overly humble/deferential, a register non-native speakers wouldn’t catch as unusual.
