  • Yu Aoi Raves About Morning Musume ’26: “Giving It Your All Is So Wonderful It Makes Me Cry”

On the radio program “#Flat” hosted by Panther Mukai and Yaren’z, actor Yu Aoi’s comments after watching a live performance video of Morning Musume ’26 that moved her to tears were introduced on 5channel’s Hello!Project board. Yu Aoi had originally been a supporter of ANGERME, but in November 2025 she made headlines for attending Juice=Juice’s Nippon Budokan concert; this time her praise for Morning Musume drew a flood of fan reactions. In the thread, opinions were divided over how to interpret her “oshi-hen” (switching which idol/group you support) and over comparisons of ticket sell-out rates and popularity between Morning Musume and Juice=Juice.

Kunio: "In fiscal year 2022, how much did Yu Aoi actually talk about ANGERME? It's sad, but that's the answer. It wasn't something worth doing in her private time — it was business."

Kunio: "I know exactly what kind of contract it was, and how much money changed hands."

    Background and Discussion Points

Yu Aoi is known as a longtime Hello!Project fan who has mainly supported ANGERME, but she made headlines on 5channel back in November 2025 when it emerged that she’d attended Juice=Juice’s Nippon Budokan concert. This time, her praise for a Morning Musume ’26 live video sparked the discussion, and the thread expanded into comparisons between the groups. The focal point was how to weigh Juice=Juice’s “stability” — often described as lacking in change — against Morning Musume’s combination of “reassurance and excitement.” Ticket sell-out status was also raised in several replies, but it should be noted that these are individual posters’ personal observations, not something confirmed by official announcements.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5channel (Hello!Project board) thread “Yu Aoi passionately raves about Morning Musume ’26’s live show on the radio: “The wonder of giving it your all — an energy so joyful it makes me cry”.”

Yeah, he was on Majilove's show (fellow comedy duo Majikal Love's radio program)

    Background and Key Points

The agency’s announcement only states “poor health” and that he will “focus on treatment,” without disclosing a specific diagnosis or symptoms. On 5channel, many comments speculated about mental health issues, but this remains pure speculation and isn’t confirmed by any official source. Ueno is known for his YouTube series visiting haunted spots, which sparked plenty of jokes in the thread about “curses” and “hexes” — these too are just jokes, not facts. Leave-of-absence announcements from Yoshimoto Kogyo talent have become fairly common in recent years, and it’s not unusual for performers to return to work without ever disclosing details; no return date has been given in this case either. Readers should be careful to distinguish between speculative reactions and the agency’s official statement.

  • Marty Friedman Calls Out Foreign Tourists Over Shrine Dance Video

On September 7, Marty Friedman (63), the former Megadeth guitarist who has lived in Japan for decades, quoted a video circulating on X to call out foreign tourists. The clip appears to show a group of tourists dancing at what looks like the Senbon Torii (Thousand Torii Gates) at Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto. This isn’t the first time Friedman has spoken up — he previously criticized foreigners doing pull-ups on torii gates. On 5ch, while many agreed with his call for restraint, others pushed back, arguing that “shrines have traditionally been used like public parks” and “Japanese people do similar things when they travel abroad,” leaving the thread divided over where to draw the line.

    Mon, Sep 7, 10:11 AM

Marty Friedman (63), the world-renowned former Megadeth guitarist, updated his X account by the 7th, issuing a warning to foreign tourists filming dance videos at Japanese shrines and temples.

Friedman quoted a video circulating on social media that appears to show several tourists, believed to be foreigners, dancing at what looks like the Senbon Torii at Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto. Addressing them in English as “Dear tourists,” he asked them to please stop.

    Background and points of debate

Shrines are religious sites, but they’re also open community spaces where things like radio calisthenics or ritual dances take place with the consent of local parishioners and residents — and it’s the ambiguity over “who actually gave permission” that split opinion here. Marty Friedman has lived in Japan since the 1980s and has appeared on domestic music TV programs; this isn’t his first time speaking out, having previously criticized foreigners doing pull-ups on torii gates. In the thread, two competing premises — “unauthorized horseplay” versus “shrines have always been open spaces” — talked past each other without resolution, and as of this report, the exact filming location and circumstances behind the viral video haven’t been independently confirmed. Tourist etiquette also ties into the government’s tourism-promotion policies, but this article limits itself to presenting the various views expressed.

  • Fisherman YouTuber Erupts Over Komeo Food Poisoning Scandal: “Honestly, I’m Pretty Furious”

On September 6, 2026, free-diving fisherman YouTuber Masaru voiced his criticism on X, saying “Honestly, I’m pretty furious.” On 5channel threads, many voiced concerns about lax hygiene management, while opinions on Komeo himself were split — some questioned whether critics had the standing to criticize, and others pushed back against those defending him.

Under old-school apprenticeships you have to squeeze in learning

YouTube cuts out all that wasted friction.

Background and key points of this story

The “food hygiene supervisor” qualification can be earned with roughly a single day of training, so holding the certificate doesn’t necessarily reflect the real state of hygiene management on-site. Commenters in the thread picked up on exactly this, with many arguing the real problem wasn’t a lack of credentials but practical issues — temperature control and ingredient sourcing — when serving raw and chilled dishes at an outdoor festival. At the same time, Masaru himself reportedly has his own history of falling ill from unusual foods, and some pointed out that critics aren’t necessarily in a position to talk either, so this hasn’t become a simple, one-sided pile-on. The Azabu-Juban Summer Festival is one of Tokyo’s biggest summer festivals, packed with food stalls every year, and a food poisoning outbreak affecting this many people is unusual — attention is now likely to turn to how stall screening and public health authorities respond going forward.

  • Sakanaction’s Ichiro Yamaguchi: ‘Regular Cigarettes Reek’ — Yet We’re Stuck in the Same Smoking Area, He Admits

Ichiro Yamaguchi of the rock band Sakanaction opened up about smoking on the September 1 broadcast of “Sakanaction Ichiro Yamaguchi’s All Night Nippon.” Responding to a listener’s email arguing that “no matter how busy work gets, or even if you’re at Disneyland with your family, you still need a cigarette break,” Yamaguchi admitted feeling guilty toward non-smokers but agreed it “can’t be helped.” A self-declared e-cigarette user, he reportedly complained about how strong regular cigarette smoke smells, and how painful it is to be lumped together with pack-a-day smokers in the smoking area. On 5channel, opinion split down the middle over whether e-cigarettes or regular/heated tobacco smell worse, with many commenters also pointing out that he was mixing up the terminology.

Ichiro Yamaguchi of the rock band Sakanaction appeared on the September 1 broadcast of “Sakanaction Ichiro Yamaguchi’s All Night Nippon” (Nippon Broadcasting) and revealed something he finds tough about using smoking areas.

That day, a listener wrote in: “No matter how busy work gets, or even when you’re at Disneyland doing family stuff, you still need a cigarette break — that’s just how it is, right?”

Yamaguchi, a smoker himself, said, “I really do feel sorry toward all the non-smokers out there,” but agreed with the listener that “it can’t be helped.”

IQOS smelled terrible when it first came out.
These days e-cigarettes don't smell as bad, and you don't have to worry about nicotine stains either.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

In Japan, products commonly called “e-cigarettes” actually fall into two distinct categories: nicotine-containing heated tobacco products (like IQOS or glo, which heat real tobacco leaf) and nicotine-free VAPE devices that heat a liquid. The two differ in both regulation and chemical makeup, but they’re routinely conflated in everyday conversation. Commenters picked up on this distinction, and much of the thread’s confusion stemmed from the fact that it was never clear which type Yamaguchi actually meant by “e-cigarette.” The debate mainly split over which smell was worse: some argued regular cigarettes have a harsh, burnt odor, while others countered that the sickly-sweet smell of e-cigarettes and heated tobacco is even more nauseating — with many pointing out that, to non-smokers, both are equally unpleasant. It was also notable that Yamaguchi’s stance — apologizing to non-smokers while still shrugging it off as “unavoidable” — drew both sympathy and pushback in roughly equal measure.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5channel (Entertainment/Sports News+) thread “Sakanaction’s Ichiro Yamaguchi, a self-declared e-cigarette user, confesses the pain of it all: ‘Regular cigarettes really stink,’ ‘yet we get shut in the same smoking area together…’“

  • Takafumi Horie on Tomomi Itano backlash: “Yeah, some of that’s just poor-people envy”

Businessman Takafumi Horie addressed online criticism of former AKB48 member Tomomi Itano on his YouTube channel. Some have accused Itano of “flexing” over the international school her daughter attends and her use of a foreign domestic-staffing service. Horie responded that it’s “envy from people who are economically poor,” predicting the backlash would “die down within a month.” The comment sparked debate on the 5ch Geino/Sports News+ board, with users split over whether dismissing criticism as mere envy is fair, and others pointing out real structural problems with international schools themselves.

Businessman Takafumi Horie, known as “Horiemon,” updated his YouTube channel on the 6th, sharing his personal take on online criticism aimed at former AKB48 member and TV personality Tomomi Itano.

In the video, the topic turned to criticism from some quarters accusing Itano of “flexing,” relating to her daughter attending an international school and her use of a foreign-born housekeeping staffer.

When his manager, who was interviewing him, asked, “Do you think kids develop more ability at an international school than at a Japanese school?” Horie replied, “I think that depends on the international school,” before adding, “But honestly, that criticism is just envy from people who are too poor to send their own kids to an international school even though they’d like to.”

Most of them aren't recognized as real "schools" by Japan's Ministry of Education, so the only path forward after graduating is a university overseas

    78AnonymousSep 7, 2026 12:27
    Re: #71
I eat vegetables because they're delicious!

Background and key points of the debate

Horie’s “criticism equals envy” line is a familiar refrain of his, and this latest YouTube comment is just the newest instance of it. What split the thread was the validity of that argument itself: some questioned dismissing critics’ points outright based on their finances rather than engaging with the substance, while others countered that most of the criticism really is tinged with jealousy anyway. Worth noting, though, is that many international schools aren’t officially recognized as “schools” under Japan’s School Education Act by the Ministry of Education — meaning graduates’ options afterward can be limited mainly to universities abroad. That’s a structural issue facing any family that chooses international education, not just something specific to Itano. It’s worth remembering that this institutional point tends to get buried under the more emotionally charged “envy” debate.

  • “I barely get to eat at my single mother’s house” — Ad about child poverty sparks big reactions

A Japanese TV ad depicting a sixth-grader growing up in a single-mother household has stirred up discussion on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G board (a general live-discussion forum). The line “I barely get to eat properly” set off a wide range of reactions — criticism of government policy and the welfare system, debate over the realities of child support and public assistance, and claims that boys tend to be turned away from children’s cafeterias (kodomo shokudo, community meal programs for kids). At the same time, some questioned where the donated money actually goes, and others argued that public consultation services should be publicized before running ads like this — turning the thread into a broader debate about how child-poverty measures should really work.

Single mothers get more support than poor working men do…
    Are you kidding me?

Background and key points of this discussion

Behind this story is the 2019 controversy in which NHK featured a high school girl as an example of “poverty,” only for it to later emerge that she’d been buying up merchandise at idol events — a scandal that blew up at the time. Threads keep citing this incident, showing how deep the distrust of the concept of “relative poverty” itself still runs. On child-poverty measures, many argued that public systems like welfare and child support should be publicized before resorting to ad campaigns like this one, and some questioned where donated funds actually end up. It’s worth noting that claims about boys being turned away from children’s cafeterias remain anecdotal and aren’t backed by official statistics.

  • M!LK’s Bid for a 2nd Straight Kohaku Appearance Clouded — 5ch: ‘NHK Is Being Way Too Arrogant’

Dance-and-vocal group M!LK is drawing attention over whether it can land a second straight appearance on NHK’s Kohaku Uta Gassen (Red and White Song Battle). The group made its Kohaku debut at the end of 2025, but according to Tokyo Sports, there was a moment during rehearsal that reportedly made staff frown. Some see a possible link to “Momoiro Uta Gassen,” the New Year’s Eve show hosted by labelmates Momoiro Clover Z, as part of the backdrop. On 5ch, comments split between questioning NHK’s attitude — letting a single rehearsal incident potentially decide the group’s fate — and debate over M!LK’s popularity and the appeal of their songs.

Will the five-member dance-and-vocal group M!LK land a second consecutive appearance on this year’s NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen? The group made its Kohaku debut on New Year’s Eve last year, but there reportedly was a moment during rehearsal that made staff frown. Perhaps because that “spark” is still smoldering, this year’s appearance looks uncertain. All eyes are on NHK’s judgment—

M!LK was formed in 2014. They debuted in March 2015 with the song “Coffee ga Nomemasen” (“I Can’t Drink Coffee”), but a slump followed. The tide turned last February, when their song “Ii Jan” (“It’s Fine, Isn’t It”) went viral on social media, and by October their track “Suki Sugite Metsu!” (“I Like You So Much It’s Destruction!”) had become a full-blown boom. So says an industry insider.

Yeah, and she's shown up on regular song contest shows too.

Background and Key Points of This Story

M!LK was formed in 2014 and, after a long slump, broke through in 2025 with the hits “Ii Jan” and “Suki Sugite Metsu!,” leading to their first Kohaku appearance at the end of that year. The group belongs to Stardust Promotion, the same agency as Momoiro Clover Z, which hosts its own New Year’s Eve music program — a connection that became one focal point of the thread. It’s worth noting that the original article’s claim about staff “frowning” comes from an anonymous, secondhand account, with no specifics on what actually happened; much of the pushback in the thread targeted that thin evidentiary basis and NHK’s attitude itself. Meanwhile, opinions on the group’s popularity and the quality of their songs were split, running as a separate thread of debate alongside the question of their Kohaku appearance.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

“Bayside Shakedown” is one of Japan’s most iconic film franchises — the first theatrical film in 1998 grossed roughly 10.1 billion yen, and the 2003 sequel brought in about 17.3 billion yen — and this latest release marks the first new mainline entry in 14 years. Thread opinions were split on box-office prospects, with some optimistic based on the series’ track record and others more skeptical given the underwhelming performance of recent spinoff films. As for Chosuke Ikariya, a long-running rumor holds that The Drifters were plagued by internal discord, but some posters testified that the real friction was mainly between Ikariya and Ken Shimura rather than bad blood across the whole group — worth noting the gap between the public image and firsthand accounts.

Barbecue culture exists all over the world.

African hunting tribes used to grill game over a campfire and drink, having a good time. That's basically African barbecue, lol

Barbecue just seems like a hassle to me — I can never see the appeal.

The hassle IS the point — it's for making a fun racket with your friends

They probably just think whatever the West does is cool.
But then they copy the surface without looking into it properly, and end up bothering everyone around them.

It's not just "doing it because it's cool"
If that were really the only reason, parkour would be way bigger in Japan, and so would RIZIN and power slapping (guessing at the reference here)

Actually, what kind of mindset finds barbecue "cool" in the first place??

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The ordinance enacted by Kanuma City in Tochigi Prefecture bans open-flame cooking and noisy behavior in certain riverbank areas, driven by a rise in complaints about illegally dumped trash and noise. It’s worth noting that barbecue itself existed in Japan even before the Showa era, and similar outdoor-cooking traditions exist worldwide — so Takeshi’s “total rip-off of the West” line reads less like a historical claim than his own characteristic turn of phrase. Within the thread, opinions split between those who saw “cultural importation” itself as the problem and those who blamed the behavior of “a poorly-mannered minority of users” — with the latter camp often sliding into baseless generalizations about specific nationalities. This article excludes that kind of unsubstantiated commentary. As for the comparisons to tea ceremony and flower arranging, these were figurative rebuttals from thread participants rather than claims made by Takeshi or stated in the original article, and their accuracy can’t be verified.
