  • Kosuke Minowa: ‘I’m the One Who Gave Filming Permission’ — Weighs In on Tomomi Itano’s Bathhouse Video Backlash, Defends His Take Amid Online Fury

Gentosha editor Kosuke Minowa posted on X on September 7, 2026, saying “I’m the one who gave Tomomi Itano permission to film in the Ritz-Carlton’s communal bath,” apologizing to both the Ritz-Carlton and Itano. The remark came after a video of former AKB48 member Itano filming the bathhouse changing area drew criticism online, and Minowa simultaneously argued that “society keeps getting more suffocating.” Minowa has form here: in June 2025 he claimed “I gave it to her” amid suspicions that Shoko Nakagawa had bought a scalped Switch 2, only to later retract the statement and apologize. On 5ch, users questioned both the timing and style of his latest comment, with reactions split between support and criticism.

Gentosha editor Kosuke Minowa updated his official X (formerly Twitter) account by the 8th, sharing his views on the controversy surrounding former AKB48 member and talent Tomomi Itano, who filmed a video in a hotel bathhouse changing room, sparking criticism online.

Minowa first posted on the 7th: “I’m the one who gave Tomomi Itano permission to film in the Ritz-Carlton’s communal bath. I’ve caused tremendous trouble for both the Ritz-Carlton and Itano. I am truly sorry.”

This isn’t the first time Minowa has done this: last June, when talent Shoko Nakagawa posted an unboxing video of the “Switch 2” and suspicion spread that she had bought it from a scalper, he declared on YouTube, “I’m the one who gave it to her.” He later walked the statement back, saying, “Thinking about it now, it wasn’t actually Ms. Nakagawa,” and apologized.

If Itano lawyers up and apologizes, this all gets resolved and her likability even goes up.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Minowa is known as a Gentosha editor, and he has also built a name for himself through his friendship with Takafumi Horie and his online membership community. He has form here: he previously claimed “I’m the one who gave it to her” over the Nakagawa Switch 2 scalping suspicion, only to later retract it, saying “it wasn’t actually Ms. Nakagawa,” and apologize. His latest statement — “I’m the one who gave filming permission” — was read as a repeat of the same pattern: stepping into the line of fire himself to try to smooth things over. The Itano controversy has drawn criticism specifically because she filmed in a hotel bathhouse changing room, a space used by an unspecified number of other guests; the fact that the apology extended to the Ritz-Carlton as well as Itano herself suggests the incident also threatened the hotel’s reputation. On the thread, opinion split over Minowa’s claim that “society keeps getting more suffocating” — some pushed back, arguing he shouldn’t reframe criticism of a simple breach of manners as an issue of “suffocation,” while others expressed some sympathy for the idea, citing things like street-smoking bans as examples of growing social intolerance.

*This article is composed of excerpts and a summary from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports Livestream+) thread “Kosuke Minowa comments on Tomomi Itano’s “bathhouse filming controversy”: “I’m the one who gave filming permission” — his take on the online “anger”: “Society keeps getting more suffocating”.”

  • Taisei: “Original Members Nailed the Studio Sound Live, Current Members Sing Freely” — Fans Split

Juice=Juice member Taisei’s comment that “the original members excelled at faithfully reproducing the polished studio recordings live, but the current members sing freely” became a hot topic on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. The thread split between those praising the polish of the original-member era, including Karin Miyamoto and Sayuki Takagi, and those backing the current members’ freer vocal style. The debate spread beyond Juice=Juice itself into skill comparisons with Angerme and Tsubaki Factory and arguments over group rankings, with some crediting the current lineup’s rise and others pointing to the history of the group’s longtime members.

    62AnonymousSep 8, 2026 16:48
During the slump after core members Miyamoto, Takagi, Kanazawa, and Inaba left,
the remaining members kept working hard and trained up the new members,
steadily building their skills — that's how today's big breakthrough happened
Even after all the original members left and their fans dropped off,
the group's skill had already surpassed the originals, so they delivered results within a year and a half
Juice's success comes down to the current members' effort and skill

Angerme, on the other hand, relied on Rika and Miko's popularity, slacked off, and never built up real skill
Even after getting an instant-impact talent like Nagano, they're still stuck in a slump
with no sign of a comeback — if anything, they're falling apart

    Angerme >>> Juice=Juice >>> Tsubaki Factory
    Guess that settles it

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The phrase “singing freely” appears to refer to personalized vocal arrangements — like vocal fakes and ad-libs — that go beyond singing exactly as recorded. Some posters in the thread pointed out that Akari Uemura was the pioneer of this singing style, framing it not simply as a matter of skill level but as a difference in artistic approach. At the same time, the divide is clear: one camp values faithful reproduction of the studio recording, the other champions individual free expression, and the two views have run in parallel without any resolution. A point readers can easily misread is that Taisei’s comment itself doesn’t declare one group of members superior to the other — it simply describes a difference in singing style. Still, starting from this remark, the thread expanded into skill comparisons between Juice=Juice, Angerme, and Tsubaki Factory, and into arguments over group rankings, with parts of the discussion drifting well away from what the original comment was actually about.

  • CD Sales Jump 16% as Gen Z Falls for Them — Why Are Discs Making a Comeback?

According to U.S. market research firm Luminate, CD sales rose 16% year-over-year in the first half of 2026, outpacing vinyl records’ 2.4% increase. The buyers are said to be mostly Gen Z and millennials, with 16.3 million copies sold in the U.S. alone. Reacting to the news of why physical CDs are being chosen in the streaming era, a 5ch thread buzzed with a mix of takes — from “it’s just merch for supporting your favorite idol (oshi-katsu)” and “collector’s items” to skepticism over whether Gen Z actually bothers listening to them, debates over CD durability and sound quality, and comparisons with vinyl, cassettes, and MiniDiscs.

    Mon, 9/7, 5:30 PM

According to the data, many Gen Z listeners are using those shiny round discs to listen to pre-90s music. Why has the CD boom returned in the middle of the streaming era? Here’s a look at what’s behind the revival.

CDs are selling again. According to a report from industry research firm Luminate, CD sales rose 16% in the first half of 2026. And you might be surprised to learn who’s buying them: Gen Z and millennial fans are snapping up those shiny aluminum discs — so quintessentially ’90s — at a furious pace. In the U.S. alone, that amounts to 16.3 million copies. That growth rate even outpaces vinyl records, which grew just 2.4%. There’s no doubt about it anymore: today’s music fans have caught full-blown Discman fever.

With streaming you never know when a song might get pulled, and it costs money every month —
though the upside is unlimited access to a huge range of songs.

    Re: #138
I'd heard CDs have a short lifespan, but one that old still plays?

Background and Key Points of Debate

The CD revival tends to get framed as an extension of the recent vinyl boom, but what stands out in Luminate’s survey is that CD growth actually outpaced vinyl’s 2.4% increase. Where the thread split was over whether this growth reflects “buying CDs to actually listen to music” versus “buying them for fan support (oshi-katsu) or as collectibles.” Many voiced doubt that Gen Z is really playing these CDs, pointing out that this doesn’t square with how few people still own playback equipment. Some posts attributed the trend to consumers in a specific country, but neither the article nor the thread offered any figures to back that up, so it remains speculation. Opinions on CD sound quality and durability vary a lot by individual, and the format wars — CDs vs. vinyl vs. cassettes vs. MiniDiscs — are a debate that’s been rehashed across generations.

  • JR East Announces 3 Finalist Designs for New ‘Suica’ Mascot — Penguin Retires Next March

On September 8, JR East announced the three finalist designs for a new mascot to succeed “Suica no Penguin,” which has served as Suica’s image character for 25 years, and opened a user vote that same day at 3:00 PM. Voting runs until 11:59 PM on September 23, with one vote per person regardless of nationality or age. The penguin will retire on March 31 next year. On 5channel threads, the candidate designs proved divisive — with comments like “I can’t tell if it’s a squirrel or a koala” — and the discussion turned into a stream of alternative suggestions, including people pushing their own AI-generated polar bear design and others backing the Ezo flying squirrel featured on JR Hokkaido’s Kitaca card.

    9/8 (Tue) 15:53

JR East announced on the 8th that it would begin a user vote at 3:00 PM that day to decide the new image character for its “Suica” transit IC card. Whichever of the three finalist designs receives the most votes will be adopted. “Suica no Penguin,” beloved for 25 years since Suica’s introduction in 2001, will retire on March 31 next year.

The company explained its reasoning: “The new image character embodies the ‘Suica Renaissance’ vision and will be a character that grows alongside Suica as a symbol of our connection with customers and communities. Because we wanted to build Suica’s future together with as many customers as possible, we decided to determine it through a customer vote.” Voting runs until 11:59 PM on September 23. It’s being held on a dedicated website, and anyone in Japan or abroad who agrees to the terms can vote once, regardless of age, gender, occupation, or nationality.

Another thread had an explanation of the design intent

    Background and Talking Points

Suica no Penguin has been the mascot since Suica launched in 2001 — a rare case of a mascot going unchanged for 25 years. This time, JR East prepared three finalist designs and is basing the final choice directly on the vote results, a detail that’s easy to overlook, along with the fact that anyone in Japan or abroad can vote once regardless of nationality or age. On the thread, the dominant reaction was that the new candidates are hard to identify as any particular animal, and the conversation was largely driven by users generating their own AI images as counter-proposals. At the same time, some pointed to Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai’s mascot “Myaku-Myaku,” which was also panned at first before gradually winning people over, arguing this is simply a matter of getting used to something new — so opinion remains split. There were also posts claiming the switch was made “to avoid paying licensing fees” on the old penguin design, but no such explanation appears in the official announcement, so that claim should be treated as speculation only.

  • Morning Musume ’26 New Single: 5th-Round Solo Session Sellout Rate Crashes to 37% — 5ch: ‘Bet They Drop the Talk Ticket ID Checks Soon’

The 5th-round sellout results for Morning Musume。’26’s 77th single “Lonely…But not Alone / Yes ka No ka Watashi ka” individual cheki (photo/handshake) sessions were posted to 5ch’s Hello! Project board. The sellout rate for talk tickets dropped sharply — from 61% (209/340 slots) for the 76th single to just 37% (154/416 slots) for the 77th — and posters were split on whether the drop stemmed from the new identity-verification requirement for talk tickets or a genuine decline in popularity. In the individual rankings, Suzuki steadily grew her sellout numbers across the 3rd, 4th, and 5th rounds, while discussion also centered on why Ishikawa and Sugihara are popular within the 18th generation, and how members having their first solo session were being received.

    Re: #102
    Where, exactly? (Kansai-dialect pushback)

    Background and Discussion Points

Sellout rates for individual cheki and talk sessions remain one of the few quantitative gauges of member popularity in the Hello! Project fan community, now that handshake-event culture has shrunk. In recent years, more groups have introduced identity verification for talk tickets, ostensibly to curb scalping and bulk-buying by proxies — but this can also make actual sales figures undershoot true popularity. In the thread, opinions were split on whether the drop from a 61% sellout rate (209/340 slots) for the 76th single to 37% (154/416 slots) for the 77th was driven by the new ID-check requirement or by shifts in individual members’ popularity; the thread offered no way to separate the two factors, so the real cause remains unconfirmed. It’s also worth noting that terms like “rori” (slang for a young, childlike idol appeal) and “talk ID checks” are jargon specific to Hello! Project fandom that may be unfamiliar to readers outside the board.

    Background and Key Points

Tsubaki Factory is an idol group under Hello! Project, and fans have long pointed out that the group’s livestreams and concerts are frequently scheduled during weekday daytime hours. This time, the first installment of the Instagram Live was announced for 2 PM on a weekday, drawing complaints since that’s a time slot when office workers and students struggle to tune in. The thread also raised questions about ticket sales for the Nippon Budokan concert and the order in which members’ individual events were being rolled out, with several posts linking the sequence of announcements to the agency’s PR strategy. Whether an archive of the stream will be kept has not been officially confirmed, so it’s worth noting that this remains speculation within the thread.

  • Erika Karata Cast as Korean, Chie (Former KARA’s Ji-young) as Japanese in Film “Katai,” Premiering February — Based on Shiho Tanimura Novel

Eiga Natalie reported that the teaser trailer for “Katai,” starring Erika Karata and Chie (former KARA member Ji-young), has dropped, with the film set for release this February. Based on a novel by Shiho Tanimura, the film has drawn attention for its reversed casting — Karata plays a Korean character, while Chie plays a Japanese one. Reactions on the thread were initially dominated by confusion (“makes no sense”), but once it became clear the story revolves around a mixed-up fertilized egg, many came around to understanding the reasoning behind the casting. At the same time, plenty of commenters focused on the cast members themselves — from Karata’s career comeback after her past affair scandal to surprise at how natural Chie’s Japanese sounds.

Why go out of their way to do something so roundabout? That's not gonna generate much buzz.
    19AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:28
Karata or Chie — who do you like better?
    20AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:28
Another one of those "Japan did terrible things to Korea but we forgive you" movies lol
    22AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:30
    Karata's actually a good actress
her ASD role in Reel Beat was great too
but I'm not watching anything Korea-related
    23AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:30
Erika Karata really managed a comeback, huh
if anything she's clearly more popular now than before the affair scandal
    40AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:40
    Re: #23
She was a teenager when they met (legal adulthood was 20 back then)
honestly, if someone like that came onto you, hard to say no
    25AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:31
Her affair partner's family fell apart but she's still mentally unbothered, gotta envy that strength lol
    34AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:35
Karata's actually a bad actress, wooden the whole time — same type as her affair partner
she's just good-looking, which is also the same as her affair partner
    39AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:39
Chie's Japanese got so good it's basically native-level now
    42AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:42
    "Time can't be rewound, but~♪"
    that girl?
    46AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:44
    Makes no sense
why would they even need to do this?
    49AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:46
So Karata's playing a Japanese role and Chie's playing a Korean role, and they're each doing the opposite of their real nationality — is that it?
    50AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:47
    Oh, the Korean idol
she's got great Japanese and she's gorgeous
    51AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:47
Why go with such a convoluted casting choice
    just for the buzz?
    60AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:53
Re: #51 That's literally the only reason, there's no real necessity for it
the only effect is getting picked up by web media like this
    52AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:48
    Oh, Chie's an actress?
I thought it was that male action-type actor with a similar name
    54AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:48
She was in a body-swap movie with Naoto Takenaka
I looked up "who is this actress?" and was shocked to find out she's Ji-young from KARA
her Japanese is honestly native-level, I thought she was a Japanese actress
apparently she was signed to a Japanese talent agency back when she was trying to make it big in Japan, so she must've studied Japanese really hard — pretty impressive
    56AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:51
Every guy's heart skips a beat over Erika Karata in back number's "Happy End" MV, right?
    57AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:51
Honestly surprised Chie is still only 32.
    59AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:53

lol there are still people saying "bukkomi" (slang for "shoving something in") unironically
    71AnonymousSep 8, 2026 10:00
    "Bukkomi" 😂

    Background and Points of Discussion

“Katai” is based on a novel by Shiho Tanimura and appears to center on a mix-up involving fertilized eggs. Given that premise, the swapped casting — Karata playing a Korean character and Chie playing a Japanese one — carries more meaning than a simple publicity stunt, though the teaser trailer alone doesn’t convey that context well, which is why confusion dominated the thread at first. Chie made her Japan debut in 2007 as a member of KARA and has spent the years since building up her Japanese, so her language skills drawing attention isn’t new — it’s come up repeatedly before. As for Karata, her career comeback since the 2020 affair reports tends to get brought up, but it’s worth noting this story is specifically about the casting for her new film, not new information confirming the details of that past reporting.

  • Long-Running Supermarket Chain ‘Olympic’ to Vanish — All Stores Converting to Don Quijote’s New ‘Robin Hood’ Format

All stores of the supermarket chain “Olympic” will reportedly be converted, starting in December, into Don Quijote’s new “Robin Hood” format and other new store types. According to a report by HuffPost Japan, the new format’s concept is “like a supermarket, but not a supermarket.” On the 5channel Business News+ thread, people who used to shop at Olympic shared memories of the chain one after another, along with worries about what would happen to their local branches. Some pointed out that the logo — which they’d always assumed was a fox — is actually a rabbit, while others questioned the trademark relationship with the sporting “Olympics,” making this more than just a simple story about store closures.

All stores under the “Olympic” supermarket group will gradually be reborn starting in December as Don Quijote’s new format store “Robin Hood” and others. What exactly is “Robin Hood,” the store whose concept is “like a supermarket, but not a supermarket”?

So when do the Minami-Senzoku and Kashimada stores turn into Robin Hood?
    5AnonymousSep 7, 2026 18:37
The store that gets mixed up with the fishing tackle brand (Olympic is also a well-known fishing gear maker in Japan).
    6AnonymousSep 7, 2026 18:38
I wonder if they ever had friction with the sporting Olympics over the name.

I think they had prior-use rights since they held the name before the IOC started clamping down on the trademark.

I'm pretty sure the reason the IOC got serious about IP enforcement was actually because of Konami.

now it's my beloved Robin Hood.

This looks like the strategy: turn the underperforming stores into Don Quijote (nicknamed the 'Palace of Amazing Cheapness') and then quietly pull out after a while.

Olympic, brings back memories — so Don Quijote bought them out?
When I lived in Ota Ward I used to shop at the Nagahara and Hommabata stores.

Giving up the Olympic name feels like the real loss here.

But who'd have guessed that place would turn into a 'Donkey' (playful mangling of 'Donki,' Don Quijote's nickname).

    Pretty presumptuous name.
    40AnonymousSep 8, 2026 05:33
I know it as a fishing tackle maker.

Background and key points of this discussion

Since Olympic came under the umbrella of PPIH (Pan Pacific International Holdings), the operator of Don Quijote, its existing stores have gradually been converted to other formats over time — this latest announcement marks the completion of that process. On the thread, users expressed surprise at the chain giving up the “Olympic” name, along with concerns about a possible trademark conflict with the (IOC) Olympics, though the “Olympic” supermarket name itself is not actually the subject of any legal dispute over the Olympic trademark — that’s purely speculation on posters’ part. Some commenters also brought up the distinction from Gyomu Super (a wholesale-style chain), and pointed to other examples like Nagasakiya and Uny being absorbed into major discount chains in similar fashion, framing this as part of a broader wave of consolidation in Japan’s supermarket industry. Firsthand accounts of fewer checkout registers after such mergers also surfaced, reflecting underlying anxiety about service quality following consolidation.

If she's 11, they're probably talking about starting from high school. Take Phillips Exeter Academy — the school Zuckerberg and Shinichi Mochizuki both attended — it's basically boarding-only.
Boarding tuition is $69,537 (2025-26 school year).
Anyway, Professor Shinichi Mochizuki finished there in 2 years, then skipped ahead to graduate from Princeton in 3 years, second in his overall class.
He entered Princeton's graduate school at 19, got his PhD at 23, then holed himself up at Kyoto University doing research and became a professor there at 32.
Sure it costs money, but if you want your kid to become world-class, the US is still the way to go.
By the way, Professor Mochizuki is the one who proposed Inter-universal Teichmüller theory, which is controversial in the math world, but he's also the world's leading authority on anabelian geometry.
That said, top US schools are exactly where people like that gather, so even someone who got into the University of Tokyo's ultra-competitive Science III program in Japan would have a hard time keeping up.
    38AnonymousSep 8, 2026 02:23

Tsutomu Sekine's daughter was gorgeous and had Eiken Pre-1 (an advanced English certification), but in the end she married a Korean man and her education only ever got used on quiz shows.

Going forward, the world's moving toward a society that doesn't need academic credentials anyway.

In America, a bachelor's degree basically doesn't count as an education. Even after finishing a master's, you do unpaid internships, and if you don't deliver results there, you're out.
In the end, it's a system where you can't land a good job without connections.

Is there really anything useful in advice from a guy who got held back and couldn't graduate from the university he got into?

Background and Key Points of Debate

What the show revealed is just how extreme American education costs have become — at elite private schools, even a household income around $500,000 is considered the threshold for financial aid eligibility. The thread started with a simple question — why do celebrities’ kids so often study abroad — and opinion split over whether it’s genuinely about education or just about the prestige of the label. Another point of contention was whether academic credentials or personal connections matter more for one’s future: some pointed to Shinichi Mochizuki as proof of the value of credentials, while others countered that in America, too, it ultimately comes down to connections. One thing readers can easily conflate: the 60 million yen figure is a rough estimate for the total cost of attending a top US school, while Malaysia’s “50,000 yen for a high-rise apartment” refers only to rent — not a comparison of total tuition and living costs. Making a simple comparison without accounting for that difference misses the show’s actual point.

  • “Until the T-Shirt Dries” Ratings Hit New Series High — 5ch Asks “It’s Boring, So Why Are the Ratings So Good?”

Episode 9 of TBS’s Friday drama “Until the T-Shirt Dries” (aired September 4) set new series highs in both household ratings (8.8%) and individual ratings (4.9%). What’s unusual is that the show has kept climbing since its premiere instead of tapering off, building anticipation for the September 11 finale. On 5ch, opinions split between fans celebrating the show’s popularity and critics blasting late-breaking twists — like a character’s hidden divorce history — as proof “the script has fallen apart,” suggesting the ratings surge and viewers’ actual satisfaction don’t necessarily line up.

    Background and Points of Debate

“Until the T-Shirt Dries” airs in TBS’s Friday 10 p.m. slot, with ratings measured by Video Research for the Kanto region in two categories: household and individual. This episode’s 8.8% household and 4.9% individual ratings are series highs as of episode 9, continuing an unusual upward trend since the premiere. Since most dramas peak in episode 1 and taper off from there, this reverse pattern has become a talking point in itself. The thread split over whether “popular” automatically means “good” — some praised the rising ratings at face value, while many others slammed late-breaking twists, like a character’s hidden divorce history, as evidence “the script has fallen apart,” highlighting a gap between buzz and viewer satisfaction. Some commenters also mentioned bingeing the show on Netflix before or after catching up, suggesting the way people are watching extends beyond what real-time ratings alone can capture. The finale is set to air on September 11.
