  • Shoko Nakagawa’s ‘Torneko’s Great Adventure’ Screenshot of Despair Sparks Reactions: ‘We’ve All Been There’

TV personality Shoko Nakagawa posted an update on X about her progress in “Torneko’s Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon – A Bit Fancier Remaster,” but the screenshot she attached turned out to be so “despair-inducing” that it became a hot topic on a thread on 5ch’s Geisports Sokuho+ board. In the thread, users overlaid the posted photo with their own pet cats, gushing “that’s totally my Torneko!”, while others shared “been there” stories about losing hours of progress in an instant in Mystery Dungeon-style games. Some brought up an old incident where she had claimed an iPhone update wiped her Dragon Quest III save data, and the thread drew over 40 replies.

    Mon, 9/21, 7:35 PM

TV personality Shoko Nakagawa updated her X account to share her progress playing the newly released game “Torneko’s Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon – A Bit Fancier Remaster.”

“Torneko’s Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon – A Bit Fancier Remaster” is a remastered version of “Torneko’s Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon,” originally released for the Super Famicom in 1993, and is now available on Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch. The biggest appeal of the “Mystery Dungeon” format is that the dungeon layout, the monsters that appear, and the items you find all change completely with every attempt, so the adventure stays fresh no matter how many times you dive in.

The thrill of stealing and the rush of pulling it off is just better in the Shiren series.
Honestly, in the Mystery Dungeon series, the whole appeal kind of comes down to the thrill of theft.
The moment you swipe some ridiculously expensive, powerful item you could never afford, for free — that's pure dopamine.
From early game onward I'm basically just playing the whole thing thinking about how to combine items I've picked up to pull off the next heist.

The idea of stealing actually goes all the way back to the original Torneko, but it got scrapped for not fitting Torneko's character as a merchant.
Stealing caught on in Shiren instead, and later got 'reverse-imported' back into the Torneko games.

    Re: #100
Square Enix's whole business these days is just remasters and remakes

    Background and Talking Points

“Torneko’s Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon” is an RPG released in 1993 for the Super Famicom by Chunsoft (now Spike Chunsoft). Its defining feature is that the terrain and enemy placement change randomly every time you descend, and running out of strength sends you back to level 1. This system was later carried over into titles like “Shiren the Wanderer,” and “Mystery Dungeon” became established as a genre name in its own right. In the thread, opinions were split between those asking “is there really a point to releasing this remaster now?” and others reacting with weary resignation that Square Enix has been churning out remasters and remakes nonstop in recent years. Some replies also noted that the “stealing” mechanic was originally rejected for not fitting Torneko’s character, and instead took root first in the later “Shiren the Wanderer” — though it’s worth noting this account comes from fan lore rather than an official statement from the developers.

  • Newly Released Lyric Video Already Losing Steam? Some Blame ‘the Source Manga Isn’t Finished Yet’

A thread went up on 5ch’s Love Live! board after the lyric video for “Ikizu Live”‘s new song was released. The original poster pointed out that even though things are supposedly “on a roll,” the view count isn’t climbing, and other posts piled on with complaints that Ietora’s voice wasn’t included and questions about why an anime adaptation still hasn’t been announced. Some speculated the real cause might be that Kimino-sensei’s original story still isn’t finished, while others recalled how the buzz fizzled out the same way after past live shows.

If you want to scream your lungs out, go to an iM@S concert instead.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

“Ikizu Live” is a series based on Kimino-sensei’s original story, and this time the topic was the release of the new song’s lyric video. Opinions in the thread split over where to place the blame for the sluggish view count — some speculated it’s because the source material isn’t finished, while it could simply be that an anime announcement is still a way off. The claims in posts #5 and #16 that “Kimino-sensei’s original story isn’t finished yet” are strictly speculation from thread posters, not something officially confirmed by the production side, so that’s worth keeping in mind. Also, as noted in post #11, there’s a recurring pattern where excitement spikes briefly right after past live shows before interest fades, and worries were repeatedly voiced that the same pattern might play out again this time. At the same time, posts like #19–21 show people looking forward to the setlist for the next live and expressing genuine affection for the series as a whole, suggesting the overall mood isn’t simply one of disappointment.

  • MrBeast, With 500 Million Subscribers, Builds $10 Million Village in Ghana to End Child Labor

On September 20, MrBeast — the world’s biggest YouTuber with 517 million subscribers — released a video showing him building an entire village from scratch on empty land in Ghana, complete with houses, a school, wells, and farms, all in an effort to end the child labor rampant on the country’s cocoa farms. The project cost roughly 1.6 billion yen (about $10 million), and the video racked up over 39 million views in under a day. Reactions on 5channel were mixed: many were stunned and impressed by his enormous subscriber count and the sheer scale of the project, while others voiced skepticism about how much the aid would actually help, and a debate broke out comparing his spending to the charitable efforts of popular Japanese YouTubers.

On September 20, American YouTuber MrBeast (517 million subscribers) released a video titled “I Built A City To Save Kids From Illegal Labor.” The project set out to eliminate illegal child labor on Ghana’s cocoa farms by building an entire village from scratch on an empty field, at a total cost of about $10 million (roughly 1.6 billion yen). The video has drawn more than 39 million views in about a day since release.

MrBeast is known for large-scale projects like the reality show “Beast Games,” which offered a $10 million prize, and a game of tag in which he tried to evade 100 real police officers. He boasts the world’s largest subscriber count at 517 million. He’s also a dedicated philanthropist, and through his chocolate brand Feastables, he has repeatedly raised awareness of child labor in the cocoa industry.

This time, the project involved building an entire village — complete with houses, a school, wells, and farms — from nothing on empty land in Ghana’s Eastern Region. He opens the video by saying, “So many kids are being forced into illegal labor,” before declaring, “Over the past year I spent about $10 million to take on the biggest project (I’ve) ever done.”

It's true that MrBeast spent about $14 million (roughly 2.1 billion yen) building a massive town on empty land,

Meanwhile, Japan's top YouTuber was busy showing off a watch he bought────

    Background and Points of Debate

Through his chocolate brand Feastables, MrBeast has repeatedly drawn attention to the child labor problem deeply rooted in West Africa’s cocoa industry, and this project is an extension of that ongoing effort. Child labor on cocoa farms is a real issue that international bodies like the ILO have flagged for years — it isn’t something invented for this story. One thread post claimed, based on an answer from Gemini (AI), that the project was actually a reality-show set rather than a genuine child-labor initiative, but other posters pushed back, saying ‘just watch the actual video and you’ll see’ — a moment that highlighted the risk of taking AI summaries at face value. The thread also lit up comparing this to donation amounts from popular Japanese YouTubers, but it’s easy to overlook that subscriber counts and ad revenue are on an entirely different scale between the English-speaking market and the Japanese-speaking one, which complicates any simple comparison of ‘generosity.’

  • Kazushige Nagashima’s Bear-Countermeasure Idea Draws Backlash — 5ch: “Every Hunter Already Says This”

On Nippon TV’s “Kazushige & Soshina’s Super Wide Show” (aired September 20), Kazushige Nagashima proposed tackling bear damage by culling wild boar, arguing that boars eat up bears’ food before the bears can get to it. The show also covered a Japanese black bear sighting on Mt. Takao and the emergency firearm hunt authorized by local officials in Maizuru, Kyoto. On 5ch, the show’s framing of the idea as something “no one has ever said before” drew heavy pushback — users pointed out that hunters and researchers have already been discussing this, while others argued the real drivers of increased bear sightings lie elsewhere, splitting opinion over how solid the proposal’s basis really is.

    9/21 (Mon) 4:16 PM

Kazushige Nagashima (60), a former pro baseball player turned TV personality, appeared on Nippon TV’s “Kazushige & Soshina’s Super (Wide) Show” (Sundays 11 p.m.), which aired on the 20th. He put forward a concrete proposal for dealing with bear damage.

The show is a variety program in wide-show format. Nippon TV announcer Rina Sato (31) reported on the Japanese black bear sighting on Mt. Takao in Tokyo, as well as the appearance of what looked like a mother bear and cub in Maizuru, Kyoto, where local officials authorized an emergency firearm hunt allowing shooting at their discretion. She noted that the response had drawn more than 200 public comments.

Wild boar aren't bears' natural predator. If anything, boars are the ones getting eaten — Tohoku had bear incidents even back when there were barely any boars there.
"They eat first because their mouths are closer to the ground" is just an armchair observation; the real drivers of the sightings are poor beech-nut harvests, a growing bear population, and abandoned fruit orchards.
"Cull the boar" has already been floated as national policy. "No one has ever said this" is the biggest lie in the whole segment.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Bear sightings in populated areas have piled up this year across places like Mt. Takao in Tokyo and Maizuru, Kyoto. “Emergency firearm hunting,” which lets local governments authorize gun use at their own discretion, is a mechanism newly created under the 2023 revision of Japan’s Wildlife Protection and Management Law. The theory floated on the show — that boars, with mouths closer to the ground, eat bears’ food first — was treated on the thread as a hard-to-verify anecdotal claim, with users noting it’s a separate issue from the causes experts actually cite for the rise in sightings (poor harvests of beech and other nuts, a growing bear population, and neglected fruit orchards and food waste). Many also pushed back on the framing itself — “no one has ever said this” — as an exaggeration, pointing out that hunters and researchers have long discussed the need to manage rising boar and deer populations. The thread also flagged a common misunderstanding around the term “natural predator”: boars aren’t actually predators of bears, but competitors for the same food.

  • ‘High School Quiz Championship’ Finals: 16 Schools Set, Plus New SixTONES Collab Stage

Nippon TV announced the 16 schools advancing to the finals of the “46th National High School Quiz Championship,” sparking discussion on 5ch’s Geinou/Sports Breaking News+ board ahead of the broadcast on the night of September 21. Threads covered reactions to the show’s production choices, including the new collaboration stage with SixTONES, the fact that every Saitama Prefecture school was knocked out in the qualifying rounds leaving zero schools from northern Kanto, a rundown of notable alumni from competing schools like Shibuya Kyoiku Gakuen Makuhari and Asahikawa Higashi, and the show’s shift over the years from physical challenges to knowledge-focused questions. The thread’s main draw was the split opinion over the show’s question style and its use of celebrity talent.

    Re: #79
Ratings were actually good back then — the next year they dropped that approach and it completely bombed.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

“The National High School Quiz Championship” is a long-running show that began in 1983. It once made its name with physical obstacle-course races and outdoor challenges, but in recent years has shifted toward knowledge-focused questions, with the number of participating schools cut back significantly — a change the thread references directly, noting that “the running-around-town segments are gone” and it’s “become middle-school level.” The absence of Saitama schools stems from the fact that heavyweight contenders like Omiya, Sakae Higashi, and Waseda Honjo were eliminated in the qualifying round before the national finals; since the competition isn’t a one-representative-per-prefecture format, regions with a cluster of strong schools can end up shut out entirely. Comments about the relationship between sponsors/the network and the Johnny’s agency (including SixTONES) are general remarks about the show’s production choices, not attacks on any individual — that distinction is worth keeping in mind. The alumni listed for each school are drawn from publicly available biographical information, not definitive claims made within the thread.

  • “Without Income-Based Multi-Spouse Marriage, Japan’s Birthrate Won’t Stop Falling” — GaaSyy’s Opinion Post Sparks Reaction

Former House of Councillors member and current rakugo performer GaaSyy updated his X account by September 20, 2026, posting: “We need a multi-spouse marriage system based on income, or Japan’s declining birthrate won’t stop.” He argued that if someone earns 20 million yen a year, they should be allowed two spouses — boosting tax revenue and the number of children while cutting down on infidelity and affairs. On 5channel, reactions ranged from cool dismissals like “You can basically already do something like this on your own” and “This is too unrealistic to bother debating,” to more sympathetic takes such as “There’s a side to this where the haves support the have-nots.” Opinions were split over how realistic this would be as a birthrate countermeasure and what benefits it might actually offer men and women.

Influencer GaaSyy, a former Upper House lawmaker who also works as a rakugo performer, updated his X account by the 20th, bringing up the idea of a “multi-spouse marriage system.”

[Photo] The former Upper House lawmaker’s new look

GaaSyy opened with: “Yeah, without a multi-spouse marriage system based on income, the birthrate just isn’t going to stop falling lol.” He went on to share his personal take: “If you make 20 million yen a year, let them have two wives or two husbands — tax revenue would go up, the number of kids would go up, and I think affairs and cheating would go down too lol.”

Even if lots of kids get born, there's basically no hiring for jobs that pay new grads enough to actually save money.

Have you already forgotten the Employment Ice Age, back when there was a whole big generation of kids and nowhere for them to go?

What matters is how many jobs actually pay new grads enough to save — that's everything.
    20AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:57
Sounds nice in theory, but isn't there not much upside for the guys?
    21AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:57
Having multiple wives doesn't automatically mean more kids, though.
    22AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:57
With two wives, even on 20 million yen a year, you've got more mouths to feed, so you'd end up living like a 10-million-yen household.
And you'd have twice as many kids.
Wives wouldn't live any better than if they were the sole spouse either, so only lower-ranked women would agree to a multi-wife setup.
And the real problem is divorce — even if you don't divorce, if one of the other wives does, your assets still take a hit.
    23AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:57
Japan's biggest population boom (right after the war) had nothing to do with polygamy at all.

And the 17th-century boom, over roughly a 100-year span, was driven by new farmland development — polygamy barely factored in. Even back then, only rich people practiced it.

The real secret to boosting population is simple: force everyone into arranged marriages — ugly guys, unattractive women, low earners, all of it. That's it.
    25AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:59
    Re: #23

    32AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:01
Too unrealistic to even bother debating.
    35AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:02
Guys who push for polygamy just want more women — they don't actually want more kids.
    61AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:12
You hear this kind of opinion sometimes, but high-income couples who actually want kids basically already have them. And even at a 10-million-yen household income, raising just one kid is a financial squeeze — so I doubt there are many people richer than that who'd still want even more kids than they already have.
    75AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:16
    Re: #61
For household income, husband at 7 million and wife at 3 million is just a normal family. The media loves calling couples "power couples," but I'd say husband at 12 million and wife at 7 million is more like it.
    68AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:14

    69AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:14
The effect would be basically zero. Take Furuta — his wife Nakai can't have kids, they have none, and he still hasn't divorced her or adopted. Polygamy just doesn't mesh well with a country that values human rights.
    88AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:21
    Re: #69
Polygamy isn't just about male desire — there's also a side to it where the haves lift the have-nots out of poverty.
    90AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:22
Multiple wives, sure, but multiple husbands? Even with two husbands, one wife can't exactly pop out a ton of kids.
    95AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:26
    Re: #90
Exactly. The pace of childbirth wouldn't change at all — all you'd get is the downside of not knowing if the kid is even yours. Most men would say "no way" to raising a kid that isn't their own blood. Polyandry only really works in places like a few pockets of China or Southeast Asia, where men don't need to work in the first place.

    Background and Points of Debate

Article 732 of Japan’s Civil Code bans bigamy, so introducing a “multi-spouse marriage system” would require a fundamental overhaul of the legal framework. GaaSyy’s comment was offered as a personal opinion without addressing this legal reality, and many in the thread were quick to question how realistic it actually is. As for birthrate countermeasures, the relationship between income and number of children isn’t so simple — higher-income households aren’t necessarily more likely to have kids, and as some pointed out, even households earning in the 10-million-yen range still find child-rearing a financial strain. There’s also the view that Japan’s postwar population boom was driven mainly by the spread of arranged marriage (omiai), not polygamy, suggesting that policies aimed at boosting the marriage rate itself might be more effective than changing the shape of the marriage system. GaaSyy is a former House of Councillors member who was formally expelled from the chamber, and some see the point of remarks like these as less about their truth or feasibility and more about grabbing attention.

    Re: #74
The lowest was 3.5%, but the average was actually 4.4%

    Background and points of discussion

The Getsuku (Monday 9pm) slot was once Fuji TV’s flagship drama timeslot, but in recent years it has struggled with weak ratings, prompting more attempts to generate buzz through headline-grabbing guest casting. YOSHIKI and GACKT, both musicians who came up through the visual-kei scene, had never appeared together before; this time the pairing came about after an exchange on social media, which drew attention. On the thread, some expressed surprise at the “26 years” figure or nostalgia for YOSHIKI’s past work, while many others questioned how much a guest appearance could really do for the drama’s reception or ratings, leaving opinions split on Fuji TV’s casting strategy itself. Details of how the appearance came about, and what YOSHIKI will actually do on screen, won’t be known until the finale airs.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “YOSHIKI to Appear on Fuji TV’s “Getsuku” for the First Time in 26 Years! Teaming Up with GACKT for the First Time After an Exchange on X, Appearing as Himself.”

  • ANGERME’s Show Cancelled — Band Live-Streams From the Studio Instead

At 6:25 PM on September 21, 2026, ANGERME’s official YouTube channel premiered a “ROCK IN JAPAN FESTIVAL 2026 Live Stream.” In the video’s comments, leader Ise Suzuran wrote, “Unfortunately, we’re really frustrated about the cancellation, but we’re bringing you our all-out performance from the studio,” suggesting that after their on-site performance was cancelled, studio-recorded footage was delivered instead. On 5ch’s Hello! Project board, viewers kept up a running commentary trying to determine whether the stream was truly live or pre-recorded, scrutinizing clues like whether the members were holding mics, slight timing gaps in the backing track, and the camera work.

    Re: #422
At a livehouse you can hear it

    Background and Key Points

Rock in Japan Festival is a major outdoor rock festival held every autumn, and this time ANGERME’s on-site performance was cancelled for reasons not specified, with studio-recorded footage premiering at 6:25 PM instead — a sequence of events reflected in leader Ise Suzuran’s comment-section message: “Unfortunately, we’re really frustrated about the cancellation, but we’re bringing you our all-out performance from the studio.” Around the same time, heavy rain warnings were issued for several municipalities in Chiba Prefecture, which also became a talking point on the thread, though no direct causal link to the cancellation was confirmed there. Opinions on the stream were split: some posts overlooked the “premiere” label and mistook it for a genuine live broadcast, while others tried to work out that it was actually pre-recorded by picking up on clues like the members singing without mics and slight timing gaps in the backing track.

  • Momoiro Clover Z Livestreams Free Yokohama Stadium Show, Peak of 12,000 Viewers Sparks Debate

Momoiro Clover Z streamed their Yokohama Stadium concert live and free on YouTube with no archive, drawing roughly 12,000 concurrent viewers at its peak. The venue saw a 24-song setlist spanning old favorites to new releases, and the group also announced their next self-produced show, “Momoclo Autumn Peach God Festival 2026” (October 17-18, Chōsei Village, Chiba Prefecture). Opinion on the thread split over how to judge that viewer count, with some calling it “impressive given their current popularity” and others dismissively calling it “a step down compared to Hello! Fundamentally there's a limit to what voice alone can do — but with a band or orchestra behind you, the same song can get a spring arrangement, a summer arrangement, an autumn arrangement, a winter arrangement, a mountain arrangement, a sea arrangement, a morning arrangement, a night arrangement, a small-venue arrangement, a massive-venue arrangement — total freedom.

Not many songs create that level of togetherness the way "Kono Uta" does

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Momoiro Clover Z livestreamed their Yokohama Stadium concert free on YouTube with no archive, drawing a peak of roughly 12,000 concurrent viewers. Their next self-produced show, “Momoclo Autumn Peach God Festival 2026,” has already been announced for October 17-18 in Chōsei Village, Chiba Prefecture — an easy detail to overlook amid how active the group continues to be. On the thread, opinion split over how to read that 12,000 figure. Against claims that it’s “a step down compared to Hello! Project,” others countered that “a number like that for a no-archive live stream is impressive” and “they’ve actually pulled off solo stadium and dome shows, which gives that argument real weight.” It’s worth noting that a simple concurrent-viewer count doesn’t capture archived viewing or plays across multiple platforms, so declaring one group more popular than another based on that number alone is premature. There was also disagreement over how to interpret streaming-chart rankings regarding the ratio of new to old songs, which spiraled into a battle of dueling screenshot sources.

  • SixTONES Fan Recommended a ‘Ikizu-Live’ Concert — Falls for Liella! Instead

A thread on 5ch’s Love Live! board picked up on a post from a SixTONES fan who’d been recommended an “Ikizu-Live” concert by an acquaintance — but ended up getting hooked on Liella!, the idol unit from Love Live! Superstar!!, instead. Commenters floated theories like “in the end, looks were probably the deciding factor,” while debating the gap in passion between fans of real-life idols and fans of 2D/voice-actor idol groups. Some pointed to social media engagement numbers as a gauge of popularity, and the discussion soon grew from a single anecdote into a broader comparison of fandoms across genres.

Guess looks really do matter after all
    2AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:11
When did they end up on Liella!?
    3AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:12
Stop making up stories that sound this plausible (this reads like fanfic)
    4AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:17
Normally you'd get into a real idol instead
    5AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:17
Come on, nobody's actually into the 'star' idols, lol (i.e., the 2D Superstar!! crowd)

    Re: #5
Check out the comments section over on Jan-New?
They're getting showered with praise there
    6AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:20
    A victory for lookism
In the end it's all about performance and visuals
    7AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:30
Real idol otaku are gonna be into real idols, of course
    8AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:34
Who's the cute one in Ikizu-Live?
    9AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:34
    Liella!'s got style too
If you're a female voice-actor-idol, they're the ones to aim for, career stage be damned
    10AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:35
    Well, obviously
You think Ikizu-Live's lineup can win over female fans with those faces?
If you're recommending something to outsiders, Liella! is the only real choice
    13AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:38
Ikizu-Live's music is made for otaku anyway
    19AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:10
Ikizu-Live's fan-account post has almost 300 likes, but Liella!'s only pulling something like 30… that's the reality right there
    21AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:12
Liella!'s seriously washed up (dead content)
What do they even do from here?

    Background and Talking Points

Liella! is the idol unit from the anime Love Live! Superstar!!, known for having the voice actors themselves perform on stage. What stood out in this thread was real-life male idol fans using “looks” as their yardstick when comparing female idol-type groups — though it’s worth noting this reads less like a judgment of any one person’s appearance and more like a discussion of how fanbases and levels of passion differ by genre. Some comments also cited social media “like” counts as a measure of popularity, but the thread doesn’t address that such numbers can’t be compared directly given differences in posting timing and follower demographics.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Love Live!) thread “A SixTONES otaku was supposed to get an Ikizu-Live recommendation but washed up at Liella! instead.”
