M!LK Draws Only 170,000 Fans Yet Books an Arena Tour — 5ch: “Their Agency’s Strategy Is Just Bad”

The story

On 5ch’s Hello! Project discussion board, posters took notice that the all-male idol group M!LK (under talent agency Stardust Promotion) has grown big enough to run an arena tour. Someone posted a 2026 attendance-numbers ranking showing YOASOBI and Nogizaka46 both pulling over 500,000 fans this year, while M!LK sits at only around 170,000. Even so, opinions clashed over the jump to arena-sized venues — “the agency’s strategy is just bad” versus “it all comes down to whether you can book the venue in time” — and the talk spread into comparisons of venue size and attendance with fellow Stardust/EBiDAN (a talent-agency idol collective) act Chou Tokkyu (“Super Express”), as well as with other Hello! Project groups.

Their agency's strategy is just terrible.

Re: #4
And to think Music Station was originally created for Johnny's talent in the first place.
5AnonymousOct 29, 2026 11:58
Honestly they probably just can't get a venue booked. There's probably a revenue angle to it too.
8AnonymousOct 29, 2026 11:59
Re: #5
They'd make plenty of profit, no problem — their merch runs on brutal blind-box/random-pull sales tactics too.
9AnonymousOct 29, 2026 11:59
Same story with Juice=Juice — nobody expected them to get this popular, so their live scale hasn't caught up with their actual popularity. Equal Love booking the National Stadium by anticipating their own rise in advance was the unusual case, if anything.

Re: #9
I mean, it's been over a year since they blew up. They should've locked in bigger venues the moment "Ii Jan" (M!LK's breakout hit) made them popular.
10AnonymousOct 29, 2026 12:00
Once Chou Tokkyu wraps its Budokan show, they'll go straight into a dome show. It's always been "Chou Tokkyu first" at that agency. Even on YES! Tokyo (a Stardust-affiliated radio/variety show), Chou Tokkyu gets pretty favorable treatment — and even though the newer members are more popular than Takuya, it's the original members who get pushed to the front. EBiDAN runs on seniority just as rigidly as Hello! Project does.

Re: #10
Not Budokan — you mean Chou Tokkyu's dome show.
16AnonymousOct 29, 2026 12:02
Re: #10
I only really know Chou Tokkyu from back when composer Kenichi Maeyamada was writing a ton of songs for them, but once M!LK started taking off, I did notice the agency pushing Chou Tokkyu hard too — like a bundled package deal ("バーター," agency slang for pairing a weaker act with a popular one on the same booking). In Hello! Project terms, it'd be like Morning Musume getting the push instead of Juice=Juice.

Re: #13
Makes sense for M!LK though — they're doing a hall tour (smaller theater-sized venues, not arenas) and they're all over the media, so this tracks.
17AnonymousOct 29, 2026 12:04
Chou Tokkyu actually has skill, but M!LK doesn't, right?
20AnonymousOct 29, 2026 12:05
Re: #17
M!LK has popularity, but Tokkyu doesn't, does it?
23AnonymousOct 29, 2026 12:07
On the flip side, at what point did Equal Love foresee getting this big and lock in a dome? I always had the impression M!LK actually broke out slightly earlier than Equal Love.
26AnonymousOct 29, 2026 12:08
Re: #23
Wait, really? I thought the order was Equal Love in 2024, then M!LK in 2025?
30AnonymousOct 29, 2026 12:09
Re: #26
Equal Love was already popular back in 2021.
31AnonymousOct 29, 2026 12:10
Re: #26
Equal Love already had a solid, steady fanbase even before "Tokubetsu na Sonzai ni Naru CHU!!" (a TV drama they appeared in), but they only blew up to this scale because of that show — so it's probably around the same time as [M!LK's] "Ii Jan."
24AnonymousOct 29, 2026 12:07
So basically you can live pretty comfortably without being a massive hit — kind of like Hello! Project, huh? Though luxury-car money still probably requires actually being a hit.
25AnonymousOct 29, 2026 12:07
Re: #1
Back when M!LK were still unknown underground idols, they got a full one-hour special on an Abema (streaming service) show hosted by [Morning Musume's] Fukumura Mizuki — treatment way above what M!LK normally got at the time, and M!LK fans endlessly thanked Fukumura for it. A while later, in 2025, M!LK had their huge breakout with "Sukisugite Metsu" (song title, roughly "I Love You Too Much, It's Ruin").

Re: #25
You post this exact same copypasta every single time.
33AnonymousOct 29, 2026 12:10
M!LK in 2024 was already on the verge of breaking out — not exactly "underground" anymore. Still, funny to think that back when M!LK debuted in 2015, the Ōkami board (an old-school idol-fan message board, lit. "Wolf") was mocking them with stuff like "M-M!LK lol, what's with the 'can't drink coffee' thing lol" (a jab at their milk-themed name).

Re: #33
Wait, it was actually a talking point back then?
34AnonymousOct 29, 2026 12:11
Same reason Juice=Juice's venues never scale up. Booking a venue takes a long lead time, and if popularity drops during that lag, you're stuck with a huge loss. So the safe move is to stick to a size you know you can sell out.
35AnonymousOct 29, 2026 12:12
Re: #34
Morning Musume has never even done a dome show to begin with — heck, even Sayumi's graduation concert, which people said could've filled a Saitama Super Arena-sized venue, ended up at Yokohama Arena with a ticket-lottery bloodbath of rejections.
45AnonymousOct 29, 2026 12:14
A fan I know, nicknamed "Tako-chan," quit being a Juice=Juice fan, left the fan club, and became an M!LK fan — then quit M!LK too and is now obsessed with some group I can only describe as "whatever-it's-called" (the poster seems unsure of the group's actual name).

Feels like at Stardust, it's really just the same drifting fans circulating from one group to the next.

Re: #45
My childhood friend was a Hello! Project fan, got hooked on M!LK, and is now a full-on EBiDAN otaku — stanning M!LK, Chou Tokkyu, Lienel, Genjibu, and Ii Ondo all at once (the latter three are smaller EBiDAN-affiliated idol units).
46AnonymousOct 29, 2026 12:14
I wonder if the "morie-mi" newbies over there (slang mashing "盛れ," flattering/filtered photos, with M!LK — i.e. fans drawn in by heavily edited pics) are also demanding a dome show.
53AnonymousOct 29, 2026 12:19
Re: #46
Like, "I can't get tickets! Just do a dome already!"?
58AnonymousOct 29, 2026 12:24
A dome show next year is a lock.
61AnonymousOct 29, 2026 12:26
Re: #58
At the earliest, late next year.
65AnonymousOct 29, 2026 12:28
I'd bet Chou Tokkyu's dome show this fall only happened because the agency scrambled to book a venue after M!LK blew up with "Ii Jan." They probably locked in a venue for M!LK at the same time, so my guess is M!LK does theirs around next spring?
69AnonymousOct 29, 2026 12:31
Re: #65
Then why didn't they just give the dome to M!LK instead?
66AnonymousOct 29, 2026 12:29
Does Chou Tokkyu actually have the fanbase to pull off a dome show?
70AnonymousOct 29, 2026 12:32

Whoa, Chou Tokkyu's really that big?
77AnonymousOct 29, 2026 12:38
Re: #70
This table's wrong. Nogizaka, FRUITS ZIPPER, and Juice are all way too low.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The attendance ranking repeatedly posted in this thread is an unofficial tally of questionable accuracy — as post #77 itself notes (“this table’s wrong”) — so it shouldn’t be taken as hard fact. The mismatch between venue size and tour scale reflects a structural issue: major arenas and domes typically have to be reserved years ahead of time, so even if a group’s popularity suddenly spikes, there’s often no time left to secure a bigger venue before the tour has to go on sale. Equal Love’s earlier dome booking, made by betting on its own future popularity, illustrates exactly this point. The disagreement over the agency’s strategy is also tangled up with the differing treatment Stardust/EBiDAN gives M!LK versus Chou Tokkyu, as well as differences in revenue structure — merchandise sales among them — between groups, making this a more complicated issue than a simple popularity ranking alone.
