  • US Report: Ohtani Advised to “Retire from Pitching” as Two-Way Role Risks “Mutual Collapse,” Time to Focus on Hitting

The digital edition of Sports Illustrated (US) has published a pointed commentary on pitcher Shohei Ohtani, arguing that “the time has come to end his career as a pitcher.” Ohtani hasn’t taken the mound since July 3, sidelined by soreness in his left knee and right biceps. This season he posted a sharp 8-2 record with a 1.79 ERA over 14 starts, but in the 49 games since going down he has hit just .259 with an .860 OPS — a steep drop from the 1.000-plus OPS he sustained in each of the previous three seasons. On the 5ch [Japan’s largest anonymous forum, successor to 2channel] thread on the “Geinou Sports Sokuho+” board, posters split between those conceding “the limits of the two-way player” and those reluctant to give up watching him pitch, with the debate spreading to gripes about him not playing the field and whether his production still justifies his salary.

Is it worth sacrificing his hitting power just to keep pitching? On the 15th (the 16th in Japan), the venerable US outlet Sports Illustrated’s digital platform “ON SI” ran a scathing commentary on pitcher Shohei Ohtani (32), declaring flatly that “the time has come to definitively end his career as a pitcher.” Writer Ryan Phillips argued that “it’s time for him to retire from pitching and focus on hitting,” going so far as to say, “I never want to see him on a mound again.”

Ohtani went on the injured list (IL) with a sore left knee and right biceps and hasn’t pitched since July 3 (July 4 in Japan). This season he’s gone 8-2 with a 1.79 ERA and 95 strikeouts over 85 2/3 innings across 14 starts. Even so, the magazine takes issue with the physical toll of the process of working his way back onto the mound.

Since that date, as a hitter he has batted .259 with 12 home runs, 30 RBIs and an .860 OPS over 49 games. Given that his OPS topped 1.000 in each of the previous three seasons, the magazine argues that “now that he’s 32, the cost of the two-way experiment has started spilling over into his hitting as well.”

I don't know all the details, but for Ohtani specifically, between running him full-time as a pitcher versus full-time as a hitter, is hitting actually the better option?

It's probably because he overdid it at the WBC this year.

Ninth in the order at first base as a hitter, and a ninth-inning-only closer as a pitcher — wouldn't that work?

    Background and Talking Points

Since returning to game action in 2018, Ohtani has continued his unprecedented two-way workload, but as a pitcher he has already undergone elbow surgery twice, and this latest absence is likewise attributed to trouble in his left knee and right biceps. Debate over the merits of the two-way role has flared up repeatedly before, but what’s new here is that a major US magazine has explicitly called for him to “retire from pitching.” The thread discussion went beyond questions about continuing as a two-way player, extending to frustration over his continued use as a designated hitter [DH — a batting-only role with no fielding] rather than a fielder, and to questions about whether his output still justifies his salary, broadening the debate well past his performance on the mound alone. Note that the stats and injury details in this article are based on US media reporting, and any decisions on his future usage will depend on announcements from the team.

  • Giants Swept 3 Straight by DeNA, Games-Above-.500 Cushion Falls to 11 — Emergency Team Meeting Called After the Game

On September 15, 2026, the final game of the three-game Giants–DeNA series at Yokohama Stadium ended in a lopsided 2-13 loss, completing a three-game sweep by DeNA and dropping the Giants’ cushion above .500 to 11 wins. Starter Shosei Togo was knocked out before completing two innings, allowing 9 runs (5 earned), and reports say the coaching staff and players held an emergency team meeting after the game. On 5ch, fans expressed dismay at how a promising start — sparked by Hirayama’s leadoff home run — completely fell apart, debated the view that the pennant race has now narrowed to a two-team fight between the Hanshin Tigers and DeNA, and speculated over which team the Climax Series special rule would end up applying to.

[Shinya Miyamoto] Giants' 'Bad Atmosphere' Made Worse as Key Players Izumiguchi and Togo Pour Fuel on the Fire… Time to Play with Self-Awareness
    https://news.yahoo.co.jp/articles/faa47bb75f5e69b618d8416a29d0f3cb65fe9bb7

In the 2nd inning, Izumiguchi made an error and Togo gave up three home runs. Izumiguchi, the team's No. 3 hitter and shortstop, is a player who should be a pillar on both offense and defense. Togo has had his rough patches too, but he's a pitcher once called the team's ace.

Since this is a competitive sport, things won't always go well. Even so, you shouldn't let the team's atmosphere sour — and when there already is a bad atmosphere, you should be the one to cut it off. Think about the worst-case scenario and make it a habit to play in a way that avoids it at all costs. Don't keep repeating plays you know you shouldn't make. It's not easy. But a player who's supposed to be a pillar of the team needs to carry that awareness and play in a way that lifts the team's momentum. That goes doubly for a core player on a team fighting for the pennant — and it's exactly that kind of play that leads a team to a championship. I know this comes across harsh, but I hope it can serve as a spark for them to turn things around. (Nikkan Sports columnist)

Right off the bat, Hirayama's leadoff home run off DeNA's Azuma put the Giants ahead. After the bad run the day before, the mood must have shifted to 'today we can do this.' Matsumoto followed with a double, and they had the momentum building.

What killed it right there was the No. 3 hitter, Izumiguchi. On a 3-ball count he swung at a fastball just off the middle of the plate and flied out to third. Personally, I think it's fine for a cleanup-caliber hitter to swing on a 3-ball count — especially with a runner in scoring position.

    The Carp, again? lol

Background and Key Points of Discussion

The Giants had maintained a healthy cushion above .500 for most of the season, but a three-game sweep at the hands of DeNA has pulled that margin down to 11, narrowing the gap with second-place DeNA to just 5 games. Starter Shosei Togo was tagged for a career-worst 9 runs in just 2 innings, and with Taiga Funasako pitching in three straight games, fatigue in the bullpen is starting to show. The emergency team meeting held after the game is believed to be an effort by the coaching staff to convey a sense of urgency, though its contents haven’t been disclosed. On the thread, users cited a column by Nikkan Sports commentator Shinya Miyamoto, who argued that the momentum built by Hirayama’s leadoff home run was killed off by a weak at-bat from No. 3 hitter Izumiguchi, sparking criticism of the attitude of the team’s core hitters. Opinions were split between those who believe the pennant race has already become a two-way fight between Hanshin and Yokohama, and those still holding out hope for a Climax Series berth or a come-from-behind title.

Opinions split on pitcher management, with some arguing the team should quickly write off lost causes and others favoring grinding it out.

Hanshin's in a total slump on the MBS broadcast countdown and still has 5 games left against Yokohama, so they'll probably drop

Yokohama actually overtaking the Giants… seems pretty tough
But Yokohama finishing 2nd is definitely plausible

Yokohama's still got 5 games left against Hanshin, so if they climb to 2nd, they'd probably go all the way to 1st

    No way that's true
Going this long without a pennant would be way too much of a joke
Besides, they've only actually won the CS once, two years ago

Background and Key Points of This Thread

By mid-September, the Central League has turned into a scramble among the teams already out of pennant contention, all fighting for 2nd and 3rd place and a shot at the Climax Series (CS) — and this thread reads more clearly in that light. The core of the discussion is that the Giants are entering the final stretch with a thin starting rotation (the names mentioned were basically just Inoue, Takemaru, and Ogasawara) and a worn-down bullpen, while Yokohama (DeNA) still has five head-to-head games left against Hanshin, fueling talk that they could climb to 2nd. Opinions split over managerial philosophy — whether to write off games early as lost causes, or grind it out the way manager Hara used to — a recurring debate around how the Giants handle their pitching staff. There’s also a passing reference to “the incident where the starting catcher suddenly vanished,” though the thread never spells out the details, so that remains unclear. On the whole, this was a thread less about the standings themselves and more about hunting for reasons why the team’s talent has fallen off so sharply.

  • Giants’ Shunsuke Urata Sits Out with Right Elbow Injury — Acting Manager: ‘Not Looking Great’

On September 15, a 5ch thread tracking news on the Giants’ first team was opened. Shunsuke Urata, who injured his right elbow making a diving catch in the previous day’s (the 14th) game against DeNA, showed up on the field for pregame practice that day but quickly retreated behind the dugout, with Acting Manager Hideki Hashigami admitting his recovery was lagging, saying, “It’s still not looking great today either.” In the end, he sat out that day’s game against DeNA. The thread also carried surrounding news, including Daisuke Motoki’s second son Eisuke making his official high school baseball debut, jockey Yoshiomi Shibata’s retirement, and the delayed gate-opening at Koshien, alongside a steady stream of posts tracking player roster moves.

With his team holding a commanding 10-3 lead heading into the 7th inning, No. 24 Eisuke Motoki (1st year) made his first official-game appearance as a pinch hitter. He reached base in his first official at-bat on a shortstop's error and even scored a run. The inning turned into a batting-around rally, and in his second at-bat he ripped a double down the left-field line — a happy first hit.

Giants: Urata Shows Up on the Field but Quickly Heads Back In — Right Elbow Hurt in the Sept. 14 DeNA Game Now Taped Up
    https://news.yahoo.co.jp/articles/f20c3ffe869dee540c96c60778b302cdec7e0db8

Giants outfielder Shunsuke Urata, who was subbed out after getting injured on defense in the September 14 game against DeNA, appeared on the field for pregame practice. But after talking things over with a trainer, he headed back behind the dugout.

Even through his undershirt, it was clear his right elbow had been taped up.

Urata got hurt on defense in extra innings on the 14th. With two outs and a runner on second in the 10th, he made a diving catch on a shallow fly ball off the bat of Ebina — and seemed to favor his arm afterward.

Background and Key Points on This Topic

Shunsuke Urata’s right elbow injury traces back to a diving catch he made in extra innings of the September 14 game against DeNA. He showed up for pregame practice on the 15th with the elbow taped, but soon retreated behind the dugout, and his absence from the lineup was confirmed. Acting Manager Hideki Hashigami’s comment that things were “not looking great” has been read by fans as a sign his time on the sidelines could drag on. The thread didn’t stop at this one story — it also tracked same-day NPB and high school baseball news as it broke, including Daisuke Motoki’s second son Eisuke making his high school baseball debut, jockey Yoshiomi Shibata’s retirement, and the delayed gate-opening at Koshien. Rather than sticking to a single storyline, threads like this are characterized by their running, cross-cutting coverage of the first team, the farm system, and other clubs all at once.

  • Ohtani’s ‘Two-Way Ceiling’ Theory Surfaces: Former MLB Pitcher Casts Doubt on His $700M ($101.5 Billion) Megadeal

Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani was placed on the injured list (IL) on September 11 (local time) with inflammation in his right upper arm. He’s not expected back until at least the September 23 game against the Padres, meaning the stretches this season where he’s actually been able to function as a two-way player have been limited. A column by a former MLB pitcher argues that if Ohtani can no longer sustain two-way play, it won’t justify the value of his contract, reportedly worth ¥101.5 billion ($700 million) in total. On 5channel threads, opinions are split: some say “he’s already earned his contract’s worth” and “he should focus on hitting only,” while others push back with “it’s a performance-based deal, so the full amount isn’t guaranteed” and “we’re still only in the front half of the contract.”

“There will come a time when he no longer justifies the contract” — Could Ohtani’s “two-way limit” theory cut the value of his $700M deal in half? A former MLB pitcher discusses the superstar’s future: “He needs to face reality”

The generational talent who has continued his otherworldly run in the sport now finds himself in an unprecedentedly difficult spot.

Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani was placed on the injured list (IL) on September 11 (local time) due to inflammation in his right upper arm. His earliest possible return would be the home game against the Padres on the 23rd.

    Re: #76
We're not even in the back half yet — this contract started in 2024.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Ohtani’s contract is reported as a 10-year, $700 million (¥101.5 billion) deal, but the bulk of it is structured as deferred payments starting in 2034 onward, and reportedly includes conditional, performance-based portions. That means the total contract value isn’t simply locked in as a fixed annual salary, so the assumption often made in the threads — that he’s “already received the full amount” — isn’t quite accurate. On the other hand, there’s also a view that the Dodgers have already seen increased revenue from merchandise sales, broadcasting rights, and sponsorships tied to the two-way brand, meaning whether the contract “pays off” isn’t just about his salary alone but about the team’s overall earnings. This IL stint is drawing attention as a factor that could affect his chances of returning as a pitcher, but it’s worth noting that the reported “two-way limit theory” is simply the personal view of one former MLB pitcher — not an official comment from the team or from Ohtani himself.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5channel (Geisports Sokuho+) thread ““There will come a time when he no longer justifies the contract” — Could Ohtani’s two-way limit theory cut his $700M deal’s value in half? • Giants’ Cabbage Pulled Mid-3rd After Two Weak At-Bats — Fans Grumble Over Managing

On September 14, 2026, this is the live-commentary thread for the Giants–DeNA game at Yokohama Stadium. The Giants started foreign batter Cabbage at No. 2, center field, but after going hitless in two at-bats, he was pulled partway through the third inning. The thread lit up with reactions like “The acting manager’s being really harsh on Cabbage lol,” and frustration also boiled over at the batting-order decisions under acting manager Hashigami. A news link about the Hanshin–Chunichi lineup going quiet that same day was also posted, with some comparing it to other teams’ struggles.

Maybe Ohtani will sign with our team

    Background and Talking Points

In this day’s Giants-DeNA game, foreign batter Cabbage, starting at No. 2 and center field, went hitless in two at-bats and was pulled partway through the third inning — that became the main topic of the live-commentary thread. In Japanese pro baseball, a foreign player’s playing time and contract renewal often hinge on batting results, so an early pull like this tends to be read as both a sign of doubts about how he’s being used and a hint about his future with the team next season. The thread also repeatedly voiced frustration at the decisions coming from the Hashigami acting-manager regime, but that’s a debate about lineup and pitching-change calls, not a personal attack on the player’s character or appearance. A news link about Hanshin and Chunichi’s lineup also going quiet that same day was posted as well, and it’s worth noting that several Central League teams were having a rough day at the plate — useful context for reading the thread’s reactions.

  • Masumi Kuwata’s ‘I Wouldn’t Mind Managing the Giants’ Remark Sparks Debate Over His Exit as Farm Team Manager

A sports-tabloid article claiming that Masumi Kuwata, who just stepped down as manager of the Yomiuri Giants’ farm team, revealed he’d been told by team executives that he “could take over as (first-team) manager” became a hot topic on 5ch. The article framed the story with a romance analogy, but it wasn’t clear which part was actually the “bombshell remark,” leaving commenters confused. Discussion centered on whether Kuwata is actually cut out to manage the Giants’ top team, with opinions split between those praising his coaching ability and skeptics who think he wouldn’t fit the current regime.

    Re: #77
Matsui surrendered to Ichiro's camp, after all.
MLB's one thing, but actually wearing a non-Giants uniform domestically carries real weight.

    Background and Key Points

Masumi Kuwata, a former Giants pitcher, had served as the team’s farm (second-team) manager since 2023, and this time his departure from that role was reported. The article frames the circumstances of his exit around a claim that team executives told Kuwata “you could take over (as first-team manager)” — billing this as a “bombshell remark” — but the text alone doesn’t make clear exactly which statement is meant, leaving commenters confused, with one writing, “Even people who can read Japanese can’t tell which part is supposed to be the bombshell.” The gap between the sensational headline and the actual substance is a familiar pattern for this kind of sports-tabloid exclusive. There’s also a history of front-office phrases like “stay on if you want to” being read in very different ways — as a genuine offer to continue, or as a polite dismissal (as in the old anecdote about Seibu’s Yoshiaki Tsutsumi) — and this time, too, opinions split further once the discussion turned to whether Kuwata is actually cut out to be a manager.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “[Baseball] Masumi Kuwata’s ‘Bombshell Remark’ After Saying He ‘Could’ Manage the Giants — Behind His Exit as Farm Team Manager: ‘Maybe He’ll Never Get the Top Job Now’.”

On the night of September 14, 2026, a 5ch thread following the Yomiuri Giants game filled up with frustration over the team’s struggling lineup. Nakayama went down looking for the third straight at-bat, and as the team kept failing to cash in on scoring chances, viewers fired off harsh comments like “Never let him play again.” Beyond the criticism of Nakayama, the thread also debated the team’s low stolen-base success rate and questionable pitcher usage, with opinions split on whether the team’s struggles come down to individual players or to the coaching staff’s decisions.

    Background and Talking Points

Real-time commentary threads for pro baseball games tend to attract a rush of emotional comments as the game unfolds, and players who fail to deliver often face especially harsh judgment. Because a called third strike ends the at-bat without the batter ever swinging, it tends to be seen as “passive,” drawing more backlash than an ordinary weak groundout. The stolen-base success rate comparison raised here is the kind of numbers-driven topic that easily sparks debate, but it’s worth noting that such comparisons often ignore sample size and game situation. Complaints about pitcher usage are also frequently “hindsight bias” — judgments made only after the results are in — and the actual soundness of the in-game decisions is hard to assess without knowing what information was available beforehand. It’s worth keeping in mind that all of these are real-time reactions posted during the game itself, not a definitive verdict on any player’s ability or the coaching staff’s decisions.

  • Fighters’ Hiroumi Itoh: ‘Seibu’s Third-Base Coach Makes a Telltale Move Depending on the Pitch’

Nippon-Ham Fighters pitcher Hiroumi Itoh sparked debate on 5ch after remarking that Seibu’s third-base coach makes a specific, consistent movement only when a certain pitch type is coming. At issue is an NPB rule — agreed upon by all 12 teams — that bans runners or coaches from relaying pitch types to the batter. On the thread, opinions clashed between those saying “analyzing tells is fine, but relaying them on the field is a different matter” and those arguing “without proof, Seibu shouldn’t be suspected,” with many posters also drawing comparisons to past controversies involving Hanshin’s Kondo and the alleged sign-stealing between Hanshin and Yakult.

I don't know exactly what was exchanged, but it's the offensive side that needs to avoid anything suspicious-looking, and the moment someone heads toward the mound, that's already pretty far from mature.

    Re: #129
It's an issue between the two parties involved.
Ever since the "that's no good" incident, it's become like whoever complains first wins.
If you just kick up a fuss on your own, it damages the other side's reputation, and gives you an excuse if you get hit too.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

In NPB, all 12 teams have agreed to ban runners or coaches from relaying pitch types to the batter, but analyzing tells in a pitcher’s delivery is not itself prohibited. The thread’s disagreement centered on exactly where that line falls: some argued it’s premature to assume relaying occurred just because the third-base coach moved, while others countered that the problem starts the moment a coach makes a suspicious-looking movement at all. Similar controversies have recurred before — including one involving Kondo and another suspicion surrounding a 2023 game against the Yakult Swallows — and this latest remark falls into that same pattern. A point readers commonly misunderstand is that simply reading signs isn’t against the rules; the real issue is whether that information gets relayed to the batter. The lack of hard evidence was also cited as grounds for skepticism toward the accusation.

On September 14, 2026, the Yakult Swallows announced just before their game against the Hiroshima Carp that they were cancelling the planned first-pitch event “Champagne Le Rêve Brillant Day,” citing “various circumstances.” The event had been set to feature a first pitch thrown by an influencer who also works as a current hostess-club hostess, but the same game was also a free-admission day for elementary and middle school students. On 5ch’s entertainment/sports news board (Geinou Supo Sokuhou+), speculation over the reason for the cancellation mixed with debate over the choice to feature a hostess-club hostess in the first place, along with comparisons to risqué promotions other teams have run in the past.

Pro baseball’s Yakult Swallows announced on the 14th that they were cancelling the event “Champagne Le Rêve Brillant Day,” which had been planned for that day’s game against the Hiroshima Carp at Jingu Stadium.

The team apologized on its official website, saying: “Regarding today’s planned ‘Champagne Le Rêve Brillant Day’ event, we have decided to cancel it due to various circumstances. We deeply apologize for the last-minute notice.”

The game itself on the 14th will go ahead as scheduled.

"Vendor Girl Bar" to Open After Games at Nippon-Ham's Home Stadium Escon Field — Could It Violate the Adult Entertainment Business Law? [Updated]
    2023/7/25 (Tue) 8:35

It's been reported that a "Vendor Girl Bar," featuring the stadium's top-selling concession vendors, will open after games at the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters' home stadium, Escon Field Hokkaido. The concern is how this relates to regulations under the Adult Entertainment Business Control Law.

At this point, let's just invite a sex-industry worker too!

Background and Key Points of This Topic

There’s precedent for this kind of controversy: back in 2023, the Nippon-Ham Fighters drew criticism over the “Vendor Girl Bar” at their home stadium Escon Field, which raised questions under the Adult Entertainment Business Control Law — showing that team-run events pairing hospitality-industry staffing with baseball tend to invite backlash. Yakult itself has form here too, having run a first-pitch event in 2013 featuring Dan Mitsu in a school swimsuit, so a risqué promotion is nothing new for the team. This time, the fact that the game in question overlapped with Free Admission Day for elementary and middle schoolers appears to be one reason the mismatch with the audience fueled so much criticism. The team has not disclosed any specific reason for the cancellation beyond “various circumstances,” and the real story remains unannounced.
