  • Giants Give Up Early Runs to Yakult — 5ch Erupts in Anguish Over ‘A Win Today Puts Us in First!’

A thread about the Giants vs. Yakult game at Tokyo Dome. In the heat of the pennant race, with a win meaning first place, the Giants fell behind starting in the first inning due to baserunning blunders and shaky pitching control. Posters traded blame over the questionable baserunning calls and pitcher usage that led to the early runs, with comments like “those two idiots in the first inning wrecked everything” and “our team is cursed to never have a better winning percentage than Hanshin.” Adding to the tension, the Hanshin–DeNA game later that evening could also swing the outcome of the pennant race.

If we lose today and the Tigers (珍 — a mocking nickname for Hanshin) win, it's over

    Background and Key Points

The Central League is in the closing stretch of a pennant race between the Giants and the Hanshin Tigers, and on this day a Giants win over Yakult would have put them in first place. The thread pins the early runs on a first-inning baserunning gamble (taking a risky extra base that ended in a close-call out), with posters directing more frustration at the coaching decisions than at individual players. The thread also frames the day’s outcome as tied to the Hanshin–DeNA game later that evening, since its result would directly affect the pennant race. As this is a live thread, it captures only fragmentary, in-the-moment commentary — the final result of the game and any resulting standings changes are not settled within the scope of this thread.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hello!Project board) thread “Giants Acting Manager Thread 144.”

  • Chunichi Dragons Miss Playoffs for 14th Straight Year — Worst Streak in NPB History

The Chunichi Dragons have missed out on the Climax Series (CS) again this season, stretching their playoff drought to 14 consecutive years since 2013. It’s now the longest such streak among all 12 NPB teams, and this season the Dragons became the first Central League team eliminated from playoff contention. From 2007, when the CS took its current format, through 2012, Chunichi was a fixture in the postseason — but everything changed starting in 2013, and the slump has continued ever since. On 5ch, discussion ranged widely: doubts about manager Kazuki Inoue’s in-game decisions and the front office’s approach, attendance comparisons with J.League side Nagoya Grampus, debate over the team’s reliance on its mascot “Doala,” and even broader questions about a pro baseball system with no relegation.

Chunichi suffered a lopsided loss to the Yomiuri Giants in their final game of the season, extinguishing any chance of reaching the Climax Series (CS). Manager Kazuki Inoue said, “We’re not in a position to talk big. We’ll just keep fighting hard in the games right in front of us.

I want to put on games that feel fun to watch, so the fans don’t get too discouraged. We’ll keep working to show solid baseball through the rest of the season,” he said. Chunichi became the first team in this season’s Central League to be eliminated from CS contention.

This marks the 14th consecutive year Chunichi has missed the CS, dating back to 2013. Since the CS adopted its current format in 2007, Chunichi reached it six years running through 2012 — during that stretch, they were, alongside the Giants, one of the Central League’s playoff regulars. But starting in 2013, they haven’t made it back once.

Are you making fun of Mazda?

    Background and Key Points

The Climax Series (CS) was first introduced by the Pacific League in 2004, and the current format — where the top three teams in each league, including the Central League, advance — began in 2007. Chunichi was a fixture on par with the Giants during that first six-year stretch, but hasn’t finished in the top three (A Class) even once since 2013. It’s worth noting that 2020 doesn’t count toward the “missed playoffs” streak: the CS wasn’t held at all that year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and Chunichi actually finished in A Class that season. Without knowing this, it’s easy to get confused and wonder, “If they were unusually strong in 2020, why didn’t that break the streak?” — hence the clarification here. In the thread, opinions were split over manager Inoue’s in-game decisions, with users also questioning the front office’s management approach and pointing to attendance figures as evidence of just how popular pro baseball is in the Nagoya region — all raised as possible angles on the team’s prolonged slump.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from a 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread titled “[Baseball] Chunichi Dragons’ 14 straight years without reaching the Climax Series sets the worst record among all 12 teams — next longest is DeNA’s 9 straight years, and in the Pacific League, Orix’s 6 straight years is the longest.”

  • Murakami Delivers Go-Ahead RBI Single — White Sox Grind Out Win Despite His .203 Average

White Sox slugger Munetaka Murakami started at cleanup and first base against the Tigers on the 19th (20th Japan time), lining a go-ahead RBI single to left in his first at-bat with two outs and a runner on second in the 1st inning. The team made that single run stand up, grinding out a 3-1 win on just four hits thanks to a gritty pitching effort, moving a step closer to the postseason. Still, Murakami’s own batting average remains stuck at a lowly .203, and on 5ch, comments praising the clutch hit mixed with others pointing out his high strikeout count and low average.

During his NPB career, he racked up home runs in the notoriously compact, hitter-friendly parks of Jingu and Yokohama, and several commenters pointed that out. In MLB, ballpark dimensions and the overall level of pitching league-wide differ, making a direct comparison difficult. At the same time, Murakami’s strikeout and walk rates are both unusually high, leading some to compare him to a hitter like Adam Dunn — low average, but valuable for power and plate discipline. Judged on batting average alone he looks like he’s struggling, but fans are split on how to weigh a single clutch hit like this go-ahead RBI. The team, meanwhile, is in the thick of a wild card race after ceding first place to the Guardians, and the shakiness of the pitching staff was another hot topic.

  • Chunichi’s Akira Neo Blows Up Again in the Minors, Gives Up 5 Runs in 1 Inning vs. Hayate

Chunichi Dragons pitcher Akira Neo took the mound as the third pitcher in a farm-league (minor-league) official game against Kufu Hayate Ventures Shizuoka at Nagoya Stadium on September 19, and got hit hard, allowing 5 hits and 5 runs in just 1 inning. He came in as relief in the 7th inning with an 11-3, eight-run lead, but an infield hit to the leadoff batter combined with his own throwing error put a runner on second with no outs, and a string of hits let in a run. He also failed to record a single out while allowing 7 runs in a Farm-league game against DeNA back on August 11, and the fact that this kind of meltdown recurred in such a short span became a hot topic. On 5ch, comments split between questioning why he’s still being used as a pitcher and lamenting the waste of his background as a first-round pick multiple teams once fought over.

In the Farm-league game against DeNA on August 11, he failed to record even a single out while allowing 7 runs

Chunichi Dragons pitcher Akira Neo got hit hard again. He took the mound as the third pitcher in the Farm League game against Kufu Hayate Ventures Shizuoka held at Nagoya Stadium on September 19. After allowing 5 hits and 5 runs in a single inning, fans reacted with comments like “a cruel reality” and “that’s rough, even against Hayate.”

He entered in the 7th inning with the Dragons leading 11-3. He gave up a comebacker infield hit to the leadoff batter, and his own throwing error to first base compounded the trouble, immediately putting a runner on second with no outs. A single up the middle then loaded first and third. He got the next batter out on a foul fly to third for the first out, but then allowed an RBI single to left to give up a run.

Why are they still letting him pitch?
The coaching staff is just too dumb.

Everything manager Tatsunami ("666," a mocking nickname for his dismal record) touched turned into a failure.
Neo's full-time conversion to pitcher is basically the symbol of that.

    Re: #63
    Hard to say.
But I do think he'd have been better off with a team that actually develops its players properly.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Akira Neo was a “super high schooler” whose signing rights Chunichi won after multiple teams competed for him in the 2018 draft. He joined as a shortstop and has been converting to pitcher over recent years. This latest outing came in relief in the 7th inning with the score already decided at 11-3, so it wasn’t a situation that directly affected the win or loss — but since he also failed to record a single out while allowing 7 runs in a Farm-league game against DeNA on August 11, the fact that the same result repeated in such a short span is what drove the reaction on the thread. The debate split mainly over whether he should be moved back to a position player: some questioned the team’s handling of him given his sharp instincts and strong arm, while others pointed to development issues, such as him allegedly not listening to advice, with opinions divided over whether to blame the team’s usage policy or the player’s own attitude. There was also speculation that the team can’t let him go because he might “break out” with another club — but this is unconfirmed and should be treated as pure 5ch speculation, not established fact.

*This article is compiled as excerpts and a summary from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “[Baseball] Chunichi Dragons’ Akira Neo: “I’m done”… Blows up again in the minors, 5 runs in 1 inning vs. Hayate: “A cruel reality,” “It’s getting hard to watch” [Ailuropoda melanoleuca★].”

  • AI Might Save You Time, But Your Workload Won’t Shrink — 5ch: ‘The Freed-Up Hours Just Get Filled With More Work’

In August, a post on Hatena Anonymous Diary went viral on social media: after the author streamlined their own work using AI and shared the method internally, they just ended up with more work filling the freed-up hours — so nothing actually got easier. Companies like DeNA have cut workloads by as much as 90% in some cases, but that doesn’t automatically translate into “going home early.” On 5ch, comments ranged from sympathetic (“this is SO typically Japanese-company”) to frustration at a corporate structure where productivity gains never show up in wages or staffing, alongside counterarguments from people who say using freed-up time within work hours for other tasks is only natural. The discussion spread from there.

On August 3, a post titled “The story of how streamlining my job with AI somehow only increased my workload” appeared on Hatena Anonymous Diary and went viral on social media. The poster — described by coworkers as a hard worker — had, with good intentions, tested out ways to use AI and shared them with the company. But once an 8-hour task got compressed to 4 hours, that task was thereafter simply treated as “a 4-hour job,” and the remaining 4 hours got filled with something else.

In the end, the poster writes, it wasn’t a case of “someone who used to work 8 hours can now go home after 4 hours thanks to AI” — it was just “someone who used to finish 1 task in 8 hours now finishes 2 tasks in 8 hours.” The person who shared the technique ended up fielding all the explanations, training, and follow-up questions, with no change in pay. The poster called themselves an “inconvenient Santa Claus.”

Reactions were split between people who found it painfully relatable (“SO typically Japanese-company”) and skeptics who suspected it was a fabricated story written by AI. But the tendency for time saved to simply get reallocated to more work — rather than translating directly into shorter working hours — also shows up in survey data. So who’s actually benefiting from the time AI frees up, and for what?

    Re: #2
That's exactly why it ends up like this — Japanese companies can't fire people or cut their pay.
Going forward, simply hiring someone at all is going to be a liability.

When a giant corporation with a ton of employees rolls out AI, the costs are absurd — since they're using it for dumb questions and typing into Excel, the waste is next-level.
On the other hand, a one-person operation that uses AI well can generate several times the output of a big company for next to nothing.

This is exactly why Japanese employees fake being busy. If you blaze through your work efficiently before the clock runs out, all that happens is your quota goes up or you get handed more work.

    Re: #12
Exactly this. That's precisely why I went self-employed. When you're self-employed, the harder you work, the more you earn — and if you finish early, you're done, no need to go help anyone else out.
    14AnonymousSep 20, 2026 06:29
Objectively speaking, if an 8-hour job becomes a 4-hour job and you just go home, your daily productivity hasn't actually changed at all.

Regardless of AI, the whole point of raising productivity is to increase profit per person. I'm not saying work overtime for it, but isn't it normal to just use the extra time within your regular hours for another task? Discretionary-labor or contract-work arrangements might be different, I don't know about those.
    50AnonymousSep 20, 2026 06:50
    Re: #14
It'd be an easy sell if wages actually rose proportionally for employees whose productivity went up — but Japanese companies keep that fixed no matter what.
    227AnonymousSep 20, 2026 07:53
    Re: #14
What's actually going up is AI's productivity instead. In other words, you're teaching your job to some outside company's AI and training it — so it can eventually replace you entirely.

That's what "promoting AI" really means. And which companies make this AI? The Japanese are using American AI. So in the near future, it's America that's going to end up taking most of these jobs.
    24AnonymousSep 20, 2026 06:37
So you get made to do twice the work for the same pay. For the company, it's just one big laugh.

If engineers at other companies are tripling their efficiency with AI, doubling yours doesn't mean much — and that's on top of Japanese productivity already being called low to begin with.

    51AnonymousSep 20, 2026 06:51
I don't get the complaint. What used to be 1 job in 8 hours is now 2 jobs, right? That means you can handle double the workload. Performance won't simply double, but the company's profit definitely goes up. A decent manager reflects that in employees' pay.

If that's how it plays out, it's fine.

This is exactly the difference between staying an employee forever and taking the path toward becoming a manager/owner.
    56AnonymousSep 20, 2026 06:53

This is exactly why I hate commuting to the office and prefer working from home. If you're remote and streamline things with AI, you can just quietly wrap up your work on your own terms. But if you're in the office, you can't just get up and leave whenever you want.

Unless Japan changes its employment system, Japanese-style lifetime employment and labor law just don't mesh with AI.

Employee: "You're telling us AI makes us unnecessary and firing us — that's illegal dismissal!"

    Re: #209
No idea. I pay for both.

Background and key points of this discussion

Behind this topic lies Japan’s deep-rooted culture of evaluating work by hours spent rather than output. Even when AI shortens the time a task takes, since there’s no established system for evaluating people by the volume or quality of what they produce, the time saved tends to just get replaced with an additional assignment. In the thread, the argument that “productivity gains should show up in pay” ran alongside the argument that “of course you use your freed-up time within work hours for something else” — both partly valid, which is why opinions split. One point that tends to get overlooked is a structural constraint under Japan’s Labor Standards Act: companies find it difficult to unilaterally dismiss people or drastically change their workload simply because performance has improved, which feeds a cycle of “we can’t cut staff, so we just pile on more work instead.” Going forward, the key question may be shifting the framing of AI adoption’s benefits — away from “shorter hours” and toward “handling a greater volume of work in the same amount of time.”

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (News Express+) thread “Management: “Use AI to take it easy and go home early” → Employees: “We’re not going home” — Even DeNA, which cut workloads by up to 90%, is grappling with the wall of AI efficiency.”

  • Hanshin Tigers Suffer Shocking Collapse From 5-Game Lead — Giants’ Furious Charge Turns Pennant Race Into Nail-Biter

On the Nanademo Jikkyo G board, a thread blew up over how the Hanshin Tigers’ pennant race lead — once thought to be a runaway victory — has suddenly turned into a nail-biter. As of early September they held a 5-game lead over the Giants, but despite the good news of a 7-game winning streak in head-to-head matchups, that lead has been shrinking, and the thread split over whether to call it “historic.” Pointing to a roster stacked with a Triple Crown-caliber hitter, a rotation near the top of the ERA rankings, and relievers hitting 160 km/h, some posters argued “if they blow this, it’ll become legendary,” and brought up the 2014 season — when four foreign players swept individual titles yet the team still missed the pennant — as a point of comparison.

    Oh Seung-hwan — Most Saves
    Matt Murton — Batting Champion

All four foreign players hit it big and swept individual titles, and the team STILL didn't win the pennant

Even if the Giants win every remaining game, Hanshin still takes the pennant as long as they win all their other games except one head-to-head with the Giants

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The split over whether this counts as “historic” comes down to how you weigh a 5-game lead as of early September. >>3 coolly points out that “comebacks from 4.5 games back happen fairly often,” while >>26 counters that “a 5-game lead is rare,” and >>31 discusses the scale by comparing it to Hiroshima’s 2023 collapse from a 1-game lead. The 2014 Hanshin Tigers, cited as a reference point, are a precedent where the team failed to win the pennant even though four foreign players swept individual titles — Messenger (Most Wins), Oh Seung-hwan (Most Saves), Matt Murton (Batting Champion), and Mauro Gómez (RBI Champion) — a textbook example of strong individual stats not translating into a team championship. What readers can easily misread is that this season’s Hanshin squad is also stacked, with a Triple Crown-caliber hitter, a rotation near the top of the ERA rankings, and relievers throwing in the 160 km/h range, yet they’re still fading — the same disconnect between roster strength and results seen in 2014. The fact that they’re being caught despite a 7-game winning streak in head-to-head matchups against the Giants is also worth noting as a quirk specific to this season that can’t be explained by simply saying one team is “strong” or “weak.”

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Nanademo Jikkyo G) thread “[LOL] Hanshin Tigers Headed for a Historic Pennant Collapse… lol🤣“.

  • Carp Crush Tigers 5-1: Sato’s Leadoff Blast, Sakakura’s 3 RBIs — Fans Question Fujikawa’s Managing

In Central League action on September 19, the Hiroshima Carp defeated the Hanshin Tigers 5-1. Kuribayashi pitched well, allowing just one run into the 8th inning, while Keisuke Sato hit a leadoff home run and Sakakura went 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs. The result erased Hanshin’s game lead over the second-place Yomiuri Giants, throwing the pennant race into chaos. On 5ch threads, fans voiced unease over the mood on the Tigers’ own bench — catcher Fushimi cracking up after Sakamoto struck out, and Kinami smirking after Kumagai’s throwing error — alongside a wave of criticism questioning manager Kyuji Fujikawa’s defensive substitutions and bullpen timing. Meanwhile, some predicted the October 1 clash with the Giants at Koshien Stadium would effectively decide the pennant.

    Background and Key Points

The Tigers won the pennant in 2025, but as the 2026 season heads into its final stretch, they haven’t been able to pull away — instead they’re locked in a tight scramble with the Giants and Carp. The criticism piling up on the thread over manager Kyuji Fujikawa’s bullpen management and defensive substitutions has been simmering all season, and this loss reignited it. The team’s shortage of catchers in their 20s — a result of the current starting catchers aging — has also been flagged as an organizational problem, which ties into the speculation that Hanshin might make a dedicated pick for Aoyama Gakuin University catcher Watabe in this fall’s draft. Worth noting: the post referencing the online abuse directed at announcer Yumiko Udo links to a separate news story unrelated to this game, not an exchange between posters in this particular thread.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports Express+) thread “[Baseball] Central League T 1-5 C [9/19] Carp’s Kuribayashi allows 1 run into the 8th, Keisuke Sato’s leadoff HR, Sakakura 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs, Hanshin ties Giants for 2nd place“.

  • Yumiko Udo Hit With Online Abuse After Hanshin Tigers TV Special, Says It’s ‘Disrespectful to the Players and Manager’

Freelance announcer Yumiko Udo revealed on her radio show aired September 18 that she has been receiving abusive comments on social media following her appearance on a TV special supporting the Hanshin Tigers. While expressing anger that it was “truly disrespectful to the players and manager,” she also spoke as a fan herself, saying “a threat like that isn’t enough to make a Hanshin fan quit.” On the 5channel Entertainment & Sports News+ board, a thread saw ongoing discussion about the “jinx” that the team goes on a losing streak whenever a celebratory TV special airs before the championship is actually won — but the criticism also spread to target Udo personally and fans from specific regions, escalating into a clash between Kansai and Kanto fans.

Kansai TV programming just cherry-picks Hanshin players' good plays, scoring moments, and hits
    even during a losing streak
It's all staged to manufacture a 'we're winning' vibe even while Hanshin's in the middle of a massive skid

    Background and Key Points

It’s become customary for Kansai-based TV stations to air “pre-celebration” specials once the Hanshin Tigers enter championship-clinching pace, but fans have long passed down a “jinx” claiming that airing such upbeat programming before the title is actually secured causes the team to go on a losing streak. Within the thread, users noted that ABC TV skipped a pre-celebration special this time due to past “trauma,” while pointing to years when other networks aired one and the team promptly went on a losing streak — suggesting this isn’t dismissed as mere superstition but actually factors into real programming decisions. That said, most of the abuse in this case wasn’t really about the special’s content itself, but rather spilled over into personal attacks on Udo and regional rivalry between Kansai and Kanto natives. Sports topics turning into regional flame wars is a familiar pattern on 5channel, and it’s hard to tell from this excerpt alone how much of the criticism aimed at Udo genuinely reflects “typical Hanshin fan” attitudes versus just pile-on hostility.

  • Chunichi’s playoff hopes vanish for 14th straight year — Giants rack up a season-high 14 runs for their 2nd straight win, 5ch asks ‘What’s with that pinch-hitter call?’

On September 19, 2026, the Yomiuri Giants routed the Chunichi Dragons by a season-high 14 runs, winning their second straight game and pushing their winning margin to 13 games above .500. Starter Tanaka Masahiro went 7 innings allowing just 1 run, earning his 204th combined NPB/MLB win and his 4th win of the season. Chunichi, meanwhile, suffered a pitching collapse, giving up 15 hits and 14 runs, and missed out on the Climax Series for a 14th consecutive year. On the same day, Seibu’s Watanabe Seiya hit his 10th home run, becoming the first player since Kiyohara Kazuhiro — 39 years ago — to post double-digit home runs in each of his first two seasons after being drafted. The second half of the thread shifted to live commentary on the Hiroshima–Hanshin game, where posters were split over the Giants’ pinch-hitter decisions and Hanshin’s bullpen management.

    Background and Key Points

As the Chunichi roster-changes list (post #2) shows, the club has been shedding key players through releases and trades and is very much in rebuilding mode — this game’s pitching collapse was emblematic of why the team has now missed the Climax Series for a 14th consecutive year. Tanaka Masahiro’s “204 combined NPB/MLB wins” is often misunderstood: it’s the sum of his win totals from MLB (the Yankees, etc.) and NPB combined, a different measure from a standard NPB-only career win total based purely on years pitched domestically. Watanabe Seiya’s record is likewise conditional — “double-digit home runs in each of his first two seasons since being drafted” — a distinct achievement from a simple career home-run ranking, so that context is worth adding. In the thread’s second half, discussion turned to the Hanshin bullpen, where youngsters have increasingly taken over for Iwasaki, the presumed closer, sparking disagreement in the thread over the team’s relief strategy. Hiroshima’s Kuribayashi (Kuririn) has likewise been pulled away from full closer duties at times, so any read on bullpen usage should be weighed against each team’s specific circumstances.

  • Giants Rout Dragons 14-1 — 5ch: “LOL They Even Got Booed on the Road”

In Central League action on September 19, the Yomiuri Giants routed the Chunichi Dragons 14-1. The Giants’ offense exploded for 15 hits and 14 runs from the early to middle innings, while starter Masahiro Tanaka picked up his 4th win of the season, allowing just 1 run over 7 strong innings. Dragons starter Nakanishi took the loss after surrendering 5 runs, once again exposing his shaky early-inning form. Since this was the Dragons’ final game of the season at the Tokyo Dome, manager Kazuki Inoue was hit with heavy booing from the crowd — a moment that became a hot topic on 5ch. Threads mixed criticism of Inoue’s in-game decisions, complaints about the home-plate umpire, and concern over Nakanishi’s future.

That's because Fujikawa kept throwing his back-of-the-rotation scrubs at the Dragons and didn't take them seriously.
The Dragons' winning record against the Tigers is basically thanks to Fujikawa.

The umpire was way too biased toward the Giants ("jumpire" — 5ch slang for a ref seen as favoring the Giants).
Every borderline pitch from Nakanishi got called a ball,
    and they wouldn't call Matsumoto's half-swing either.
    11AnonymousSep 19, 2026 17:16

That was a dirty win for the Giants.
    22AnonymousSep 19, 2026 17:19
Before the score blew wide open, the outfield calls were pretty "jumpire"-biased too —
bad ball calls turned at-bats into walks and put runners on,
half-swings went uncalled for more walks,
and then the big hits came right after that.
    26AnonymousSep 19, 2026 17:19
They demolished the Tigers just recently and now this happens?
Sure, form, matchups, and lineups vary day to day, but getting beaten this badly is something else.

Background and key points of this discussion

The thread was dominated by complaints about manager Kazuki Inoue’s in-game decisions and the home-plate umpire’s calls. As one post put it, “LOL, ‘it’s the last Tokyo Dome game’ doesn’t mean you get to boo that hard on the road” — since this was the Dragons’ final game at the Tokyo Dome this season, the jeering aimed at the visiting bench seemed louder than usual. Chunichi has had an up-and-down season, including a recent series sweep of the first-place Tigers, and this lopsided loss led several posters to say the team’s playoff (Climate Series) hopes look all but dead — though it’s worth noting this is 5ch speculation, not something confirmed by the actual standings. Several posters also flagged starter Nakanishi’s shaky first innings, lamenting the gap between his current struggles and the Rookie of the Year buzz he had before the season began. On the winning side, Giants fans mostly praised Masahiro Tanaka’s gritty outing, with little criticism of the matchup itself.
