  • FF’s Hironobu Sakaguchi Used to Rip Into Square Staff at Morning Meetings: ‘You’re All Completely Useless!’

In a Weekly Famitsu conversation, Katsuhisa Higuchi — who worked on the development of FFIII and other titles — revealed that on his very first day at Square, he witnessed Hironobu Sakaguchi screaming at staff during the morning meeting, “You’re all completely useless!” The story blew up on 5ch. Higuchi, terrified, says he asked a senior coworker who this scary man was, only to be told, “Oh, that’s Sakachan, the part-timer.” The thread mixed nostalgia for that old-school, hot-blooded style of mentoring with comments noting that today it would get you fired for harassment on the spot, tying it back to how modern dev teams have grown too large for that kind of one-man management to even be possible anymore.

Katsuhisa Higuchi, who worked on the development of FFIII and other titles, has revealed his intense first impression of Hironobu Sakaguchi — the father of the Final Fantasy series — from shortly after joining Square (now Square Enix).

In a conversation between the two published in Weekly Famitsu issue 1964, Higuchi recalled, “I’m pretty sure it was my very first day at Square.” At the morning meeting, he says, Sakaguchi was already furiously tearing into the staff, shouting things like “You’re all completely useless!”

Thinking, “This guy is seriously scary,” Higuchi immediately asked a senior coworker on the spot, “Who is that guy?” The answer he got was, “Oh, that’s Sakachan, the part-timer.” That said, when Sakaguchi was later asked directly about his employment status at the time, he didn’t actually confirm whether he was a part-timer.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Hironobu Sakaguchi led the Final Fantasy series starting with the original 1987 title, before leaving Square in 2003 to found Mistwalker. Katsuhisa Higuchi is a former Square staffer who worked on FFIII and other titles, and this anecdote first surfaced in a conversation between the two published in Weekly Famitsu issue 1964. It’s easy to miss that Sakaguchi never actually confirmed during the interview whether he was really employed as a part-timer — “Sakachan the part-timer” is presented simply as the nickname people used for him at the time. The thread split between those nostalgic for that kind of strict old-school mentoring, framing it as ‘a good culture we’ve lost,’ and those pointing out that doing the same thing today would get you fired for harassment on the spot. Some also noted that now that dev teams have ballooned to hundreds of people, one-man leadership like that simply isn’t structurally possible anymore.

  • AKB Handshake Event Line Sparks Debate Over Turnout Numbers

On October 4, 2026, a video showing the line outside AKB48’s “Tokyo Handshake Event” at Makuhari Messe was posted on social media and became a hot topic on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. The day also marked the first handshake event for the newly joined 22nd-generation members. While some in the thread viewed the line favorably, many argued it was “nothing special” compared to the line at a Juice=Juice event held around the same time, and the discussion escalated into comparisons using 2026 attendance rankings for other groups like Nogizaka46 and NiziU, splitting opinion on just how popular AKB really is.

    Seriously, this

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

AKB48’s handshake events have been a core revenue driver tied directly to CD sales since the early 2010s, and remain one of the group’s main promotional events today. The “stabbing incident” mentioned in the thread refers to an actual incident that occurred at a handshake event venue in Iwate Prefecture in May 2014; in its wake, security measures for handshake events — including the introduction of metal detectors — were strengthened, and the thread’s criticism that AKB “only keeps doing handshake events for the money” appears to reflect this background. Meanwhile, all the “attendance figures” circulating in the thread come from anonymous posts, and since the calculation methods, scope, and event format (a joint handshake event for the whole group versus individual members’ events) differ from group to group, simply comparing the raw numbers is difficult. The fact that this board draws a large Hello! Project fanbase is also likely one reason opinions on AKB were so divided.

*This article is an excerpt and summary based on the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “Today’s AKB handshake event is getting a lot of buzz for its popularity“.

  • Murakami Shoji Mistakes Rookie Momoha Nagano for Sayumi Michishige — 5ch: ‘Are We All Just Missing Chayu?’

During a live broadcast in the ‘Sanma no Manma’ radio lineup, Hello! Project newcomer Momoha Nagano appeared as a guest. When comedian Shoji Murakami glanced at her profile, he briefly mistook her for former Morning Musume leader Sayumi Michishige, as though she’d made a comeback — and the moment became a hot topic on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. Michishige, known for her catchphrase ‘Sasuga!’ (‘As expected!’), graduated from the group in 2014. The thread was topped by a reply reading ‘Are we having Chayu withdrawal?’ (using Michishige’s nickname ‘Chayu’), with opinions split over whether Nagano really resembles Michishige, and how she stacks up against other members who’ve drawn the same comparison in the past.

Sayumi Michishige actually loved pink since she was little, but when she first joined Morning Musume, she got stuck as the yellow member.

The moment her pink-member senior graduated, she instantly evolved into the pink member.
Maybe Momoha Nagano is going to walk the exact same path as Sayumi Michishige.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Sayumi Michishige joined Morning Musume in 2003 and later served as its leader, a popular member known for her catchphrase ‘Sasuga!’ (‘As expected!’) and her distinctive aura. More than ten years have passed since her 2014 graduation, but as this thread’s reactions show, she remains a Hello! Project senior whom newcomers are still readily compared to. In an interview, Momoha Nagano herself named Michishige and Momoko Tsugunaga as idols she looks up to, suggesting she may be consciously channeling that vibe — meaning Murakami’s momentary mix-up wasn’t simply a random error, but overlapped to some degree with Nagano’s own intent. At the same time, commenters in the thread pointed out that the claimed resemblance rests on limited factors like camera angle and makeup, and that other members have been compared to Michishige in the same way before — suggesting the debate says less about any one member’s actual resemblance than about just how powerful and long-lasting Michishige’s image remains across generations.

  • Hanshin Clinches Back-to-Back Pennants, Fans Dive into Dotonbori River — One Guy in His 20s Does It 4 Times; 5ch: ‘Guess Tiger Fans Are Having Fewer Kids Too’

The Hanshin Tigers clinched back-to-back Central League pennants on October 3, even after losing to the Hiroshima Carp. The traditional victory “dive” into Osaka’s Dotonbori River continued despite heavy police security — witnesses counted 10 people diving in a combined 23 times, with one man in his 20s jumping in by himself four separate times. Police even had to step in to mediate a fight between rival Tigers fans. On 5ch, discussion spread around the fact that the celebration takes place in Osaka’s Dotonbori even though the team is actually based in Nishinomiya, Hyogo, and that Dotonbori is technically closer to the home turf of the Orix Buffaloes.

On the 3rd, the day Hanshin secured the first back-to-back pennants in the team’s history, heavy security was in place at Osaka’s famous Dotonbori River tourist spot — but a total of 10 people were witnessed making the “Dotonbori Dive” 23 times combined.

Apparently nearby shops and hotels ban you from entering once you've jumped into Dotonbori, so things get rough afterward

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The Dotonbori Dive tradition dates back to 1985, the night Hanshin won its first-ever Japan Series title. Famously, a Colonel Sanders statue was even thrown into the river that night, and the team’s long losing streak afterward came to be known as the “Curse of the Colonel.” Hanshin’s home stadium is Koshien in Nishinomiya, Hyogo, but the celebrations happen in Dotonbori in Osaka’s Minami district because Tigers fandom runs wide across the whole Kansai region and Dotonbori is a famous entertainment district. Opinions in the thread were split on two points: fans of Hanshin and the Orix Buffaloes — whose home turf is actually closer to Dotonbori — often get mixed up, and there’s a real gap between those who accept the dives as a fun tradition and those who see them as a public nuisance.

  • “Halo Shop” Tokyo Store Reopening Stuck in “Planning” for a Year — 5ch: “The Broke-Ass Agency Can’t Even Afford Rent”

It’s been almost a year since Hello! Project’s official goods store “Hello! Shop” announced that a new Tokyo store was “being planned at a new location.” The chain originally closed stores like the Akihabara/Suehirocho location due to high rent and shifted to mail order, leaving fans with a mix of hope and frustration about a possible comeback. On 5ch, while names like Ikebukuro, Akabane, and Gotanda were floated as possible relocation sites, the thread devolved into an argument over whether operating company Up-Front’s Takanawa studio is a company-owned building or a rental (leasehold) — complete with a fact-checking battle citing real estate listings and land price data.

They said it was “in the planning stages” a year ago already.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Hello! Shop” has a history of closing stores one after another — including the Akihabara/Suehirocho location — due to soaring rent, shifting its focus to mail order. It was roughly a year ago that the company officially announced it was “planning” a new Tokyo store, and this thread began with fans questioning why there’s been no progress since. The thread split over whether operating company Up-Front’s Takanawa studio counts as a “company-owned building” or a “rental.” Some posters cited a real estate industry website as proof it’s company-owned, while others pointed out the land itself may be leased, arguing that owning the building and holding a leasehold on the land are two separate things. It’s worth noting that the fragmentary information in the thread can’t definitively settle the operating company’s actual real estate situation, and much of this remains speculation. Candidate relocation sites floated included Ikebukuro, Akabane, Gotanda, and Kameari, but these too are just individual posters’ guesses.

  • Mushoku Tensei Criticism Spreads Into Comparisons With Other Anime — 5ch: ‘Because They Didn’t Reincarnate’

Mushoku Tensei is a popular “Naro-kei” (light-novel-site-origin isekai) anime, but criticism calling its protagonist’s personality “creepy” has repeatedly made waves before. This time, fans pushed back by arguing that “the protagonists of Slime (That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime) and Frieren aren’t much better,” which snowballed into a full-blown comparison war dragging in Smartphone Taro, Haruhi, and even Detective Conan. The thread saw pointed remarks like “it’s a different kind of creepy” and the ironic jab that “the people criticizing it know the show better than anyone,” so it never settled into a simple ranking argument.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Mushoku Tensei is a flagship title of the “Naro-kei” genre (anime adapted from novels first posted on web novel sites), and criticism of its protagonist’s personality has repeatedly flared up ever since it first aired. What split opinion in this thread was the standard for “creepiness” — some argued the yardstick differs depending on a show’s age bracket or target audience, while others countered that “it’s just a different flavor of creepy, but the core problem is the same,” and the two sides never quite connected. One part readers may misread is the exchange (posts 81–91) about “the people criticizing it being the most knowledgeable about it” — that’s just an ironic jab traded back and forth in the argument, not an actual verified claim about who knows more. Meanwhile, lines of reasoning like “it’s different because they didn’t reincarnate” or “background characters have personalities too” are a recurring, well-worn argument on 5ch for drawing the line between Naro-kei and other genres.

  • Kobe’s ¥1,100-a-Night Flophouse: 5ch Says ‘I’d Need ¥20,000 Just to Consider It’

A photo of a room at the “Sanwa Hotel” in Shinkaichi, Hyogo Ward, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture, sparked a thread on 5ch. The bare-bones lodging house offers a room of roughly one tatami mat in size, furnished with nothing but a futon and a small TV stand, starting from just ¥1,100 a night. The thread saw a flurry of reactions weighing cheapness against livability — mentions that Nishinari’s flophouses start from ¥500, price comparisons with internet cafés, and worries about bugs and smells. Some users even wondered aloud whether the photo was AI-generated, splitting opinion.

There was a wanted poster put up there

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Simple lodging houses (commonly called “doya”) are a style of accommodation concentrated in old laborer districts like Shinkaichi and Nishinari, originally developed as cheap lodging for day laborers. Today they also serve as a safety net for low-income people and those without stable housing, and the thread’s observation that “internet cafés now require ID, so people who can’t use those end up here” reflects that background. Within the thread there was also discussion scrutinizing the photo’s authenticity and timing (based on the magazine issue dates, the TV model, etc.), but the only verifiable details are the Sanwa Hotel address and the ¥1,100 price given by the original poster — whether it’s actually “the cheapest hotel in Japan,” as the thread title claims, was never confirmed. Reactions largely centered on weighing the rock-bottom price against concerns over hygiene and safety, with differing views on just how viable an option a place like this really is.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hallyu/Hello! Project board) thread “This is a room at the cheapest hotel in Japan, where you can stay for ¥1,000 a night.”

  • Kochikame’s 40-Year Run, Zero Missed Deadlines: Osamu Akimoto’s Streak Stuns 5ch

A thread on 5ch picked up on the fact that Osamu Akimoto, creator of “Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Koen-mae Hashutsujo” (Kochikame), never once missed a deadline during its 40-year run in Weekly Shonen Jump. Commenters were struck anew by the fact that he didn’t even take a break when he was sick, and the discussion expanded into comparisons with the hiatus histories of other long-running manga artists like Akira Toriyama, Rumiko Takahashi, and the creator of Urayasu Tekkin Family. The thread title’s “Ko Akimoto” was a pun mashing up the lyricist’s name with the mangaka’s actual name (Osamu Akimoto), and the conversation also touched on the differing production paces of monthly versus weekly magazines.

    9AnonymousOct 4, 2026 09:26

"Putting out one new gag to the world almost every single week for 40 years would drive you insane — gag manga usually just fizzles out into a mess."
"That's probably why weekly gag manga tend to be short-lived."
And yeah, thinking about it, Kochikame really is the only weekly manga that managed to stay in the legendary-gag-series bracket for that long.

For Rumiko Takahashi's serialized works (like "MAO"), breaks mainly take the form of regular hiatuses roughly once or twice a month, used to adjust the pace of weekly serialization.
Trends and reasons behind the hiatuses:
    • Age and pace management: now in her late 60s, she still keeps up a weekly serialization, and takes a break roughly once a month or every few weeks to manage her health and her production schedule.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Kochikame (by Osamu Akimoto) is said to have never missed a single weekly issue of Weekly Shonen Jump across its entire 40-year run from 1976 to 2016 — including times when the author was sick. The thread title’s “Ko Akimoto” is a joke spelling that plays on the sound of lyricist Ko Akimoto’s name against the actual author’s name, Osamu Akimoto; Ko Akimoto never actually drew Kochikame. Opinions split over whether to view this staying power as sheer talent or just grueling overwork, and the conversation expanded into comparisons with the hiatus records of Akira Toriyama, Rumiko Takahashi, and the creator of Urayasu Tekkin Family. Some pointed out that monthly magazines can recycle the same gags because their readership turns over, a point that highlights just how demanding weekly serialization specifically is — something not fully conveyed by the thread alone.

I take laxatives twice a week to force things out.
Do the people who keep whining about being constipated just not take laxatives?
Take one and it comes right out, your stomach's empty.

    Re: #10
If you take them habitually, they gradually stop working as well as before.
A lot of people end up upping their dose because of that —
taking 5 pills when normally even one would do the job.
    It's hard on your stomach.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

When constipation becomes chronic, it’s known to develop into a condition called ‘retained stool’ (shukuben), where waste sits lodged in the intestines for extended periods — in severe cases, medication or medical procedures become essential just to have a bowel movement. In the thread, people who regularly rely on laxatives pointed out that ‘with habitual use, they stop working as well and you end up needing bigger doses,’ a phenomenon also recognized in medicine as laxative tolerance, which overlaps with Matsumoto’s confession that she can no longer pass stool on her own. At the same time, opinions in the thread split between those blaming diet and those pointing to lack of exercise, weak muscles, or stress, with no clear consensus reached. Readers should note that the 4kg figure is simply Matsumoto’s own self-reported account, not a medically measured value. It’s generally known that when stool keeps building up in the intestines over a long period, cases can arise where manual disimpaction or surgery ultimately becomes necessary — but exactly what kind of surgery Matsumoto underwent isn’t made clear from her remarks in the video.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread ‘[Entertainment] Akiko Matsumoto Confesses Her ‘Horrific History of Intestinal Stool Buildup’: ‘It Got So Bad I Needed Surgery’ / ‘My Body Can No Longer Pass Stool on Its Own’ — 4kg of Stool Constantly Accumulated in Her Intestines.’

  • Did America Ever Have a World-Class Rock Band? 5ch Debates: ‘It’s Like Comparing Everyone to Shohei Ohtani’

A provocative thread title — “UK: ‘The Beatles! The Stones! Zeppelin! Zeppelin! Deep Purple!’ America: ‘Uh… um…’” — sparked a US-vs-UK rock debate in 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo (Live Commentary) discussion group. Names like Bon Jovi, Metallica, and the Eagles got floated, only to be shot down over their Billboard track records or musical style. The talk expanded to cover the roots of American music — blues, country, and 1950s rock pioneers like Chuck Berry — with the central question becoming “Did America really ever have anyone on the Beatles’ level?” Things eventually veered off course near the end into a tangent about global IP revenue rankings.

For that era, the UK feels like the rock scene while America feels more like the soul and pop scene.
America had rock in the '50s too, but from the '60s on it doesn't really give off a 'rock' vibe.

Bowie came along later chronologically, and his era overlaps with when American music started getting more aggressive/dominant, so he just doesn't leave as strong an impression.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

In response to the provocative thread title “The UK churned out world-famous rock bands, but what about America?”, replies pointed out that this isn’t a simple comparison — it’s more a mismatch of eras and genres. The gist: in the ’60s and ’70s, the UK led the rock scene with the Beatles and the Stones, while America at the same time leaned more toward soul, country, and folk, giving it a less distinctly “rock” face. It was also noted that 1950s American rock pioneers like Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly directly influenced the later British bands, so the story isn’t simply “America had nobody.” The late tangent into global IP revenue rankings is a side conversation that drifts from the main topic — the figures are claims made within the 5ch thread and haven’t been independently verified. A point readers might easily misread: the thread isn’t concluding that “America lacks talent,” but rather discussing a mismatch in genre timing.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Nandemo Jikkyo G) thread “UK: ‘The Beatles! The Stones! Zeppelin! Deep Purple!’ America: ‘Uh…’ ← this one.”
