  • “Not an Act of Madness”? 5ch Erupts Into a Grammar War

A shouting match broke out on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board over the meaning of the phrase “狂気の沙汰じゃない” (“not an act of madness”). It started with a post describing a game console’s price as “狂気の沙汰じゃないじゃん” (“isn’t that madness?”), which drew a reply pointing out that read literally, the phrase should mean “not madness = normal.” From there, opinion split over whether this is one of those distinctly Japanese expressions — like “冗談じゃない” (“no joke”) or “笑い事じゃない” (“no laughing matter”) — that stay in the negative form while actually carrying an intensified meaning. Some posters even pasted in an AI’s answer to the question, but were called out for the structural difference from the other ironic expressions cited, and the thread went in circles without ever reaching a conclusion.

    Re: #19
So by that logic, does "not an act of madness" = "a sound, sane judgment"?
    22AnonymousAug 31, 2026 12:46
Is this the "the crazier it is, the more fun it gets" line from Akagi or somewhere?
    That's describing something as crazy.

So "not an act of madness"
negates the madness — you're saying that makes it normal?
    24AnonymousAug 31, 2026 12:47
    Re: #22
    Breaking it down literally:

"act of madness" = an act/judgment that seems out of one's mind
    "~janai" = "is not ~"

    So normally,

"not an act of madness" = can only be seen as madness / can't be read as a sane judgment

    That's the meaning.
    37AnonymousAug 31, 2026 12:50
    Re: #24
    That's backwards, isn't it
Stop treating "janai" as if it were affirmative
    29AnonymousAug 31, 2026 12:48
The phrase "not an act of madness" can certainly exist

but it would mean "a non-crazy act = an ordinary act"

Don't tell me you're mixing up

    55AnonymousAug 31, 2026 12:53
    Re: #42
The "~jane" nuance is already covered by the "jan" tacked onto the end of "not an act of madness"
    57AnonymousAug 31, 2026 12:54
    Re: #42
No — you said yourself that "janai" = "is not,"
it's not being used like the tag-question "isn't it?"
    61AnonymousAug 31, 2026 12:54
Asked an AI and got this answer:

    1. "Act of madness"
    – An abnormal, reckless, dangerous, out-of-your-mind act
    – A word that bluntly criticizes the act itself.

    2. "Not an act of madness"
    – Grammatically this can be read as "not madness = normal"
    – But in actual Japanese usage it functions like a "double negative"

I went "huh?" and pressed further

Why does the meaning get stronger despite being a negative?
This is a quirk of Japanese —
some expressions use the negative form to create an even stronger affirmation or emphasis.

    Examples:
    – "no joke" = too serious to just laugh off as a joke
    – "no laughing matter" = too serious to laugh about
    – "no ordinary matter" = so abnormal it's out of the ordinary

    By that same structure,

    > "not an act of madness" = so crazy there's no calling it anything but an act of madness

    is what you get.

That's the AI's take on it

Who knew there was a trap like this 🤔
    78AnonymousAug 31, 2026 12:58
    Re: #61
lol, the structure's completely different from those 3 examples
If you can't actually read Japanese you'd probably just believe this…
Guessing you're not the type to crack open a dictionary like Kojien instead of trusting an AI…
    86AnonymousAug 31, 2026 13:01
If you're using it thinking it means this, well, your Japanese is a bit shaky
    97AnonymousAug 31, 2026 13:04
    Re: #79
    This one's normal usage
"a sane act" and "not a sane act" are a matched pair of opposite expressions — the former means "a sound judgment," the latter means "behavior beyond common sense."
    115AnonymousAug 31, 2026 13:10
    Re: #97, replying to myself
"You can tell 'a sane act' and 'not a sane act' apart, so isn't it weird that 'an act of madness' and 'not an act of madness' mean the same thing?"
Push on that and you get this back:

"The 'that's weird' feeling you have is correct.
    Due to Japanese ironic/rhetorical phrasing,

    – a negative form can end up meaning something stronger than the affirmative
    – 'not an act of madness' ends up meaning the same as, or even stronger than, 'an act of madness'

This is the phenomenon at play."

It just kept insisting it's an ironic/rhetorical expression no matter what
    122AnonymousAug 31, 2026 13:14
There's a slight chance ("微レ存" — internet slang for "the possibility exists, if only microscopically") it's being used the same way as "What is this swimsuit, it's basically just string!"
    128AnonymousAug 31, 2026 13:16
    Re: #122
For a second I thought it might be that same tone, but since it's followed by "jan," guess not
    130AnonymousAug 31, 2026 13:17
    Re: #122
If that were it, the "jan" at the end would just get in the way
    131AnonymousAug 31, 2026 13:18
    Re: #122
You can tell just by looking at Re: #1 —
it's "not an act of madness, right?" (jan), so the phrasing already closes off that escape route itself

    Background and points of contention

This thread kicked off during a discussion about the price gap between game consoles, when disagreement broke out over what the phrase “狂気の沙汰じゃない” (“not an act of madness”) actually means. Japanese has expressions like “冗談じゃない” (“no joke”) and “ただ事じゃない” (“no ordinary matter”) that take a negative form yet function as strong affirmations of their content. The sticking point in the thread was whether “not an act of madness” belongs to that same family, or whether it should be read literally as “not madness = normal” — and the debate went in circles without a dictionary-backed answer ever settling it. Some posters cited an AI’s answer as evidence, but were pushed back on the grounds that its structure differs from the other ironic expressions it cited, and the argument never got resolved. What’s easy to miss here is that this isn’t just wordplay — it grew out of underlying tension over game console pricing, and some replies included strong language mocking a particular fanbase, which this article has left out.

    Background and Talking Points

Threads like this are a VIP specialty — an impromptu “ASCII-art character improv,” with poster ID:DYzzaInE0 consistently voicing the (´・ω・`) kaomoji as a single character who responds to every call from the board. Getting teased as a “sunfish” (manbou) is also a classic VIP running gag and has nothing to do with the actual animal. The “summer horse racing” talk refers to the JRA’s summer racing season, and griping about betting slips getting wrecked by last-minute odds swings is a familiar refrain on the horse-racing boards too. The Midosuji Line bit refers to Osaka Metro’s well-known practice of redecorating train interiors by season, with posters riffing on “it’s already autumn.” There’s no incident or personal attack here — just idle chatter mourning the end of summer.

  • Ayase Ueda to Join France’s Lille for a ¥2.8 Billion Transfer Fee — 5ch: ‘Most Japanese Players Ever in the Big Five Leagues’

Japan national team forward Ayase Ueda (28), currently with Feyenoord, will transfer to French Ligue 1 powerhouse Lille, French outlet L’Équipe and Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf reported on the 30th. The transfer fee is reportedly around ¥2.8 billion, marking Ueda’s first move into one of Europe’s ‘Big Five’ leagues after working his way up through Kashima Antlers, Cercle Brugge, and Feyenoord. On the forum, opinions were split over whether Lille can really be called a step up from Feyenoord, with posters weighing the pecking order among French clubs like Monaco, Marseille, and the financially troubled Lyon. Talk also spread to where Ao Tanaka might land, and to the fact that this summer saw the highest-ever number of Japanese players in the Big Five leagues.

That's why the sport stays weak here no matter how much time passes —

    Background and Talking Points

Untangling the transfer fee: the money that actually lands in Ueda’s own pocket isn’t the transfer fee itself but his salary, so the point raised in posts #62 and #109 — that ‘the fee and his own earnings are separate things’ — is a distinction that tends to get misunderstood every time a move like this happens. Also, the payout to a player’s youth-development club (FIFA’s solidarity contribution mechanism, capped at 5% of the transfer fee) is a real system, so post #130’s mention of a payback to Kashima isn’t off base. Where the thread split was over whether the move from Feyenoord to Lille counts as a ‘step up,’ with posters citing Champions League experience, league standing, and the trajectory of his transfer fees side by side as yardsticks — though each of those is only a partial measure, something the article text alone doesn’t fully convey. It’s also worth noting that while Ligue 1 tends to be seen as a one-club league dominated by PSG, clubs like Monaco, Marseille, and Lyon have all had their financial ups and downs, so it’s worth being wary of the simple assumption that ‘a strong league automatically means a step up.’

On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, users debated why no sequel has appeared, noting that Nintendo has stayed silent on the topic even seven years after launch. Opinions ranged widely — from the fact that the Ring-Con peripheral was designed exclusively for the Switch, leaving its Switch 2 compatibility unclear, to the theory that the game’s massive sales were a one-off boosted by pandemic stay-at-home demand, to the observation that Nintendo tends to avoid releasing sequels on the same hardware generation.

Forget a sequel — Nintendo won't even acknowledge this thing, more stubbornly than they avoid ARMS. It's a genuine cursed relic at this point.
Why couldn't it become the next Wii Fit?
    2AnonymousAug 31, 2026 09:56
Real talk: it's a Switch-exclusive title because of the Ring-Con.
Since it currently can't be played on Switch 2, hyping it up carelessly would just cause trouble if people can't actually play it there.

Sure, you need the original Switch's Joy-Cons, but
it's not like there's anyone who owns a Switch 2 but never owned a Switch.

Nintendo just seems to have a policy of not really putting out paid DLC on its own for light/family-oriented titles.
You do see quasi-DLC bundled with Switch 2 Editions though.

Background and Key Points of Discussion

Ring Fit Adventure launched in October 2019 as a Switch-exclusive fitness game using the Ring-Con and Leg Strap, and no major additional content or sequel has followed since release. In the thread, opinions were split over several proposed reasons for the lack of a sequel: that it’s unclear whether the Switch-exclusive Ring-Con will work on Switch 2, that the game’s sales may have been driven by a one-time tailwind from pandemic stay-at-home demand, and the general rule of thumb that Nintendo tends not to release sequels within the same series unless the hardware generation changes. Note that the “18 million units” figure that came up in the thread was mentioned in separate posts referring to two different titles — Ring Fit Adventure and Switch Sports — and since this article presents the source posts as written, readers should be careful not to conflate the sales figures of the two.

  • Goodbye Lara Episode 10: Fans Buzz Over Real Cel Animation and Pre-Broadcast Leaks

Following the broadcast of Episode 10 of the anime “Goodbye Lara,” the thread lit up over the discovery that the show’s distinctively textured animation was actually shot using real cel (hand-painted transparency) footage on an animation stand, along with speculation about the psychological meaning behind the different drinks Luka gave Lara. Multiple posters also shared pilgrimage reports from real-world locations featured in the show, such as Lake Biwa Terrace, complete with photos of the crowds and fog on site. On top of that, some pointed out that content said to have circulated from overseas accounts before the broadcast matched the actual episode, prompting calls to be on guard against leaks of the next episode.

◆When starting a new thread, copy the following so it fits on three lines↑

Though a mermaid princess, Lara longed for love with a human.

But — that wish would not come true, and she vanished into the sea as sea foam.

    The direction is amazing
the breaker tripping, the lighting, the moon shown almost fully eclipsed — all building unease
they only show Mari's mouth, never her eyes (so you can't tell if she really means it when she says it's for the best)
the spinning tire in the confession scene cutting to a flash of Mari also feels loaded with meaning

Luka was doing his best to understand Lara, but
his choice of drink didn't land
and the portrait he draws of Lara doesn't look anything like her
that's probably why he went to Mari to say he can't understand Lara
I think the reason he turned down the kiss at the end was some kind of fear that comes from not truly understanding her

Whether it's what someone likes or anything else, that's the kind of thing you come to understand about each other gradually — but the lack of time is what's getting in the way here

Background and Key Points of Discussion

“Goodbye Lara” depicts a romance between a mermaid and a human, and this time the discussion centered on three main points. First is the animation technique: a behind-the-scenes video shown at the preview screening revealed that the show’s distinctive texture comes from real cel animation shot on an animation stand. Second is a psychological reading based on the drinks (cocoa vs. an energy drink) that Luka gave Lara, with fans interpreting the difference in gifts as a sign that Luka still doesn’t fully understand Lara. Third is the topic of a “leak”: content said to have circulated from overseas accounts before the broadcast reportedly matched the actual episode, raising concern about the next episode as well. All of this remains within the realm of fan speculation and impressions — it’s worth noting that neither the authenticity of the leak nor the intended meaning behind Luka’s psychological portrayal has been officially confirmed. Several pilgrimage reports were also posted, showing fans enjoying the contrast between the real-world scenery and the show’s scenes.

*This article is compiled as an excerpt and summary from the 5ch (anime) thread “Goodbye Lara #10.”

  • Fake-single lawsuit ruling comes in below the settlement offer at ¥1.21M — 5ch: “The settlement would’ve paid more”

In a lawsuit filed by a 35-year-old woman against a man who dated her while hiding that he was married, claiming “infringement of her right to sexual fidelity,” a court on July 21 ordered him to pay ¥1.21 million. The woman had originally sought ¥3 million in damages, but during settlement talks the judge told her, “If you settle, he says he’ll pay ¥1.25 million. You shouldn’t fixate on this — you ought to move on with your life sooner rather than later.” Angered by this, she refused to settle and filed suit instead. In the end, the court-awarded amount came in below the very settlement she had turned down, and on 5ch opinions split over whether the judge’s remarks were appropriate, whether the award was adequate, and the difference between pre-suit settlement talks and a court-recommended settlement after litigation.

The “fake-single” problem was also covered earlier this year in the March 3–10 issue of Josei Shichi (Weekly Woman). Married men pretend to be single and pursue relationships with women who assume marriage is on the table. The danger lurks not only on matchmaking sites but in everyday encounters too, and reader response has been substantial — the topic has been picked up by other outlets as well.

Sakura (a pseudonym, 35), who spoke to our magazine about what happened to her, filed suit claiming “infringement of her right to sexual fidelity,” and on July 21 the court ordered the man responsible to pay her ¥1.21 million. She walked us through everything, from the settlement talks that began in October 2024 to the conclusion of the lawsuit she filed in April 2025.

First, let’s revisit what happened to Sakura.

    "Fake-single" isn't romance. It's sexual violence.

*Note: "fake-single" (dokushin gisou) means a married person pretending to be single and using that false belief to pursue a relationship, sex included.
It means having sex with someone while letting them believe you're single — someone who, had they known you were married, would never have agreed to meet you, let alone date you.

That is not a relationship built on genuine consent.

We see this issue as more than mere "infidelity" — it's a serious act of harm that violates a person's sexual self-determination and dignity.

Toward making the harm visible, preventing it, supporting victims, and building the legal framework needed. We're working toward a society where no one has to just swallow it, and where no one is made to.

If they had one of those, they'd end up broke.

Background and key points of this discussion

“Fake-single” refers to married people pretending to be single in order to date or have sexual relationships — an issue magazines like Josei Shichi have covered repeatedly. Because it’s hard to prosecute criminally, the main path to relief tends to be a civil tort claim for infringement of one’s right to sexual fidelity or sexual self-determination, seeking damages — which is why the gap between the amount demanded and the amount awarded tends to be large. Tracing the timeline here: settlement talks began in October 2024, broke down, she filed suit in April 2025, and the ruling came down on July 21. In the thread, procedural questions like “was the judge actually there at the settlement talks?” and “aren’t settlement and court-mediated settlement different things?” kept coming up. This appears to stem from the fact that Japan’s civil procedure — where a judge only gets directly involved via a post-filing court settlement recommendation, rather than by sitting in on pre-filing settlement talks themselves — isn’t widely understood. The fact that the awarded amount ended up below the settlement she turned down is also a sore point, since it means the judge’s push for settlement was effectively vindicated, which is part of why opinions are so split.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (News Express+) thread “A 35-year-old woman’s confession after being deceived by a man’s “fake-single” act — she snapped at the judge’s “don’t fixate on this” and filed a “sexual fidelity infringement” lawsuit.”

  • New ‘GTO’ Ratings Finally Sink Into the 1% Range — 5ch: ‘This Is GT-Zero’

The new live-action series of ‘GTO’ has been in steady decline since its household rating of 6.4% for episode 1, sliding to a household rating of 3.0% and an individual rating of just 1.7% for episode 6, which aired last week. The original 1998 series averaged a household rating of 28.5% across its entire run — meaning this new version already started out at less than half of that in its premiere, and has only fallen further since. On 5ch, some defended the show by pointing to viewership on the TVer catch-up streaming service (‘ratings? in this day and age?’), while others dove into comparisons with the original series or revisited the history behind Fuji TV’s past ratings slump — opinions were all over the map.

    From episode 1 through episode 6 (aired last week), household ratings ran 6.4%, 4.8%, 4.0%, 3.9%, 3.8%, 3.0%, while individual ratings ran 3.8%, 2.9%, 2.4%, 2.1%, 2.2%, 1.7%.

Considering the original 1998 series averaged a household rating of 28.5% across its entire run, the new version’s premiere rating of 6.4% was already pretty dismal — and last week’s episode came in at less than half of even that premiere number.

The individual rating also fell to less than half of its premiere figure last week, dropping into the dreaded 1% range.

Even if it's trending, jumping in partway through kills the motivation to watch
That's why I end up paying for services that stream every episode instead

Background and Key Points on This Topic

Japanese TV ratings come in two types: “household ratings,” measured per household, and “individual ratings,” tallied per viewer, with the latter given more weight as a gauge of how well a drama reaches its core adult audience. The “1% range” cited for this new series refers to the individual rating. Some in the thread pointed to viewership figures from catch-up streaming services like TVer, but streaming views aren’t included in the current ratings surveys, so the two figures can’t be directly compared — a point that’s easy to misunderstand. There’s also roughly a 30-year gap between this series and the 1998 version used for comparison, and overall household ratings across terrestrial TV have been declining throughout that time, which also factors into the difference. It’s worth noting that the “AKIRA-led version” mentioned in the thread was a separate 2012 series/special, not part of this new series. While some commenters pointed to criticism of Fuji TV’s past programming decisions as the source of its ratings slump, pinning the cause on any single event is disputed, and no definitive conclusion has been reached.

  • Japan Has 9 Million Vacant Homes, So Why Won’t Landlords Rent Them Out Below Market Rate? 5ch: “There’s No Upside for Landlords”

A survey by Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications puts the number of vacant homes nationwide at over 9 million, yet a 5ch thread turned to why so many of them go unrented even at prices below market rent. Posters pointed to the heavy burden of upkeep costs like property taxes and repairs, the risk of tenants who fall behind on rent or trash the property, and the way Japan’s Land and Building Lease Law makes it hard for landlords to terminate a lease, leaving owners at a disadvantage. The thread also touched on how difficult it can be for heirs to decide what to do with an inherited vacant home, and how elderly people living alone are often turned away over fears they’ll die unnoticed in the unit. Opinions flew over just why there’s such a gap between the housing supply and what actually gets rented out.

    1AnonymousAug 30, 2026 12:11
One of the great mysteries of our time.
    Why is this?
    12AnonymousAug 30, 2026 12:17
Honestly, half the rent gets eaten up by property tax alone.
Throw in management fees, reserve funds for repairs, fire insurance, and everything else, and there's no profit to begin with.
And whatever you do manage to save up over a year just gets wiped out by renovation costs to make the place rentable again.
Property tax is just broken at this point, it's hopeless.

Renting a place out is a hassle — you've got to handle repairs and manage the books too.
Anyone who wants to move into a vacant house is usually expecting cheap rent, right?
And that kind of tenant tends to be the troublesome type: they fall behind on payments, won't move out, and trash the place.

Well, this is really renovation for use as a minpaku (short-term vacation rental) or share house.
No idea what the total cost ends up being, but at minimum they'd redo the plumbing/kitchen/bath, plus wallpaper and flooring for a cosmetic touch-up — so I'd guess the tenant sinks in somewhere around 5-10 million yen.
The landlord probably just ends up paying the property tax.
    41AnonymousAug 30, 2026 12:32

But there's still the downside that you can't sell the place if you want to, which is probably why nobody does this.

And if the landlord wants to end the lease for their own reasons, they'd end up covering the entire renovation cost plus paying the tenant to move out.
    57AnonymousAug 30, 2026 12:40

    58AnonymousAug 30, 2026 12:40
    Re: #54
That comes down to how the contract is structured. Just use a fixed-term lease — and even with a standard lease, the landlord can't terminate without "just cause."
You do need to spell out how ownership of the renovation work is categorized, though.

    Re: #132
Even with a buyout, the fundamental problem is that the heirs can't agree among themselves on what to do with the property.
Some object purely on sentimental grounds, like "it's ancestral land, I don't want to sell it,"
while others say prices will keep rising so now isn't the time.

On top of that, selling via a buyout is the biggest waste of money,
since the real estate company just pockets the resale profit.
Normally, even once the heirs agree to sell, they'd choose to go through a broker instead.

    Re: #135
That might hold for a mansion, but for a house where you're not even sure it'll sell, wouldn't you want to just offload it to a buyer the moment one shows up?
    139AnonymousAug 30, 2026 14:04
    Re: #137
That's exactly not what happens, which is why vacant houses exist in the first place…
Good properties get stuck in disputes over sale and management policy,
while bad properties can't sell even when the owner wants to, and even bad properties have their own disagreements over how to go about selling.

    Re: #139
I guess amateurs just can't tell a good property from a bad one.

    Background and Key Points

For context, a 2023 Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications survey found that vacant homes nationwide had topped 9 million, or 13.8% of all housing stock. The thread split over how heavy the property tax burden really is: against the claim that “half the rent disappears into taxes,” some pushed back that residential land qualifies for a special reduction in its taxable base, so the real burden shouldn’t be that severe. Another point of contention was the Land and Building Lease Law — the system that makes it hard for landlords to terminate a lease without “just cause” discourages the kind of renovation-premised or DIY-style rentals that might otherwise put more vacant homes to use. Something the thread didn’t touch on: the system letting heirs return inherited land to the national treasury excludes any lot with a building still standing on it, requiring the land be cleared first — which is itself one reason vacant houses tend to get left as they are.

  • Yuriko Ishida Installs Lifelike Statue Recreating Her Dog Who Died in July, at Home

Actress Yuriko Ishida (56) updated her pet-dedicated Instagram on August 30, revealing that she had installed a statue recreating the likeness of her dog Yuki, who died in July, in her room. Yuki was a golden retriever about to turn 12 who had been battling a malignant tumor called hemangiosarcoma since around March this year. Ishida commented, “I pet it every day and treasure it.” On a thread on 5ch’s Entertainment/Sports News+ board, opinions split over the propriety of this way of mourning. Some expressed surprise that she chose a statue rather than taxidermy, comparing it to a Buddhist altar or memorial tablet, while other posts focused on concern over visible cracks in the statue.

Furniture and Buddhist statues don't usually crack like this, so the material must be low-grade. But if the workshop doesn't disclose that upfront, some customers are going to think twice about buying from them.

That's just common sense. Anyone against it better never bring up 'discrimination' again.

    Background and Talking Points

Hemangiosarcoma, cited as the cause of death for Ishida’s dog Yuki, is a malignant tumor that forms in the blood vessels of the spleen or heart — a canine cancer known for progressing quickly, often already at an advanced stage by the time it’s discovered. Golden retrievers typically live to around 10-13 years old, and Yuki was battling the disease at “almost 12.” On the thread, opinions split between those who viewed it positively as a “form of mourning” similar to a memorial photo or Buddhist altar, and those who felt uneasy about preserving the dog’s actual likeness so directly. There were also comments about her choosing a statue over taxidermy, and about cracks in what appears to be a wooden material, drawing interest not just in shared grief but in the craftsmanship itself. Note that posts mocking her political views or dating/marriage history, as well as posts containing discriminatory language, have been excluded from this article as only tangentially related to the main topic.

  • ‘The Halloween Game’ PS5 Version Pulled From Japan — 5ch Reacts: ‘CERO Is Garbage’

The developer of the horror game “Halloween: The Game,” originally slated for a September 9 release, has announced that the PS5 version will not be released in Japan after all. The reason given is that the title could not obtain a Japanese CERO rating — bringing it into compliance, the developer said, would have seriously damaged both the atmosphere of the original film and the gameplay itself. The Xbox and PC versions will still launch as planned, and anyone who pre-ordered the PS5 version will be refunded. On 5ch’s hardware/industry (Geha) board, discussion centered on why only the PS5 version was affected, with many commenters pointing to a difference in platform review policy: PlayStation software is required to obtain a CERO rating, while Xbox and Steam only need to meet the international IARC rating standard.

Regarding “Halloween: The Game,” originally scheduled for release on Wednesday, September 9: because we were unable to obtain a domestic Japanese rating from CERO, we have decided to cancel the release of the PS5 version in Japan.

We determined that restricting the game’s content in order to meet the rating requirements would significantly damage the atmosphere of the original film, and would also prevent us from delivering the gameplay experience players expect.

Those who have already pre-ordered the PS5 version will be refunded by the platform holder; please contact them directly for further details.

Going through CERO is a hassle so they're just not bothering — can't be helped.

    Re: #13
For Japanese Xbox, a download-only title can release even as 18+ as long as it gets an IARC rating.
Japanese PlayStation basically works the same way — download-only software can release with just an IARC rating.
But for 18+ titles specifically, PlayStation requires a CERO rating on top of IARC.
So a download-only Xbox title can release in Japan even without CERO,
but a PS version can't release in Japan unless it passes CERO.
    18AnonymousAug 31, 2026 08:06
Wait, why does only the PS version fail CERO anyway? The content's the same, right? Is SIE (Sony Interactive Entertainment) just enforcing its own stricter internal standard?

Sony's policy is to require CERO for PS regardless of whether there's a physical release or not.
For Xbox, if there's no physical release, meeting the international IARC standard alone is enough.

Microsoft needs to think about why country-specific ratings systems exist in the first place.
If you're selling in Japan, going through CERO is the proper way to do it.
That said, CERO itself is just a private industry body's
self-regulation with no legal force behind it.
The whole point of that self-regulation was to keep the government from

Personally I don't care much either way about the cutscenes, but from a game-system standpoint — especially in PvP — that stuff is a visual cue for debuffs/incapacitation, so it really needs to stay consistent across versions.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Distribution of game software within Japan has, in practice, made age-rating review by the Computer Entertainment Rating Organization (CERO) all but mandatory. It is a self-regulatory framework run by an industry body with no legal enforcement power, but its existence is precisely what has, historically, kept the government from stepping in with actual legislation. The point of contention in the thread was “why is only the PS5 version affected” — even for download-only titles with no physical release, PlayStation software is said to require a CERO rating, whereas Xbox and Steam only need to satisfy the international IARC rating standard, a difference in review policy between platforms that was cited as the technical explanation. While some dismissed CERO as a “hollowed-out, useless formality,” others defended its value, arguing that if industry self-regulation broke down, it could lead to actual government regulation. Commenters also pointed out that similar content-restriction risks could affect other overseas titles due for release in the future, suggesting this may not be an isolated case.
