  • Tokyo: “The food’s bad, there are too many foreigners, traffic’s awful, and rent’s too high”

A post claiming “Tokyo’s food is bad, there are too many foreigners, the traffic is terrible, and rent is too high” set off a thread comparing quality of life in Tokyo versus the rest of Japan. On the food question, critics fired back that the original poster was “only going to chain restaurants” and “just eating thawed frozen food,” while defenders shot back with “have you never heard of the Michelin Guide?” The discussion gradually widened into a broader comparison of rent, salaries, public safety, staff attitudes, and the lack of jobs outside the big cities — with Osaka repeatedly singled out for praise as a place with “great food and cheap rent.”

What about the countless "pigs" hanging around Ramen Jiro? (Ramen Jiro: a Tokyo chain famous for its massive, calorie-bomb portions)

Background and key points of this discussion

The “Tokyo’s food is bad” argument is a recurring topic on 5ch, and the evidence usually cited is a reliance on chain restaurants and pre-frozen, reheated dishes. On the other hand, the Tokyo edition of the Michelin Guide has held one of the highest star counts in the world for years, and that became the main evidence for the “Tokyo has the best food” camp in the thread. The two sides largely talked past each other because they were comparing different things — one side was talking about cheap eateries, the other about starred restaurants — and the discussion broadened into a wider comparison of living costs, including jobs, public safety, and the closeness of community ties outside the big cities. Several posters singled out Osaka favorably, saying its food is great and its rent is cheap, which seemed to serve as an outlet for frustration with Tokyo’s overwhelming concentration of everything. It’s worth keeping in mind that none of this is backed by hard data or statistics — it’s purely a comparison of residents’ personal impressions.

  • Kohara Bras Calls Out the Anti-Media Crowd — 5ch Fires Back: ‘Isn’t the Source Itself Biased?’

Russian-born TV personality Kohara Bras sparked discussion by pointing out on Threads that many internet users who rage against the “trash media” are, in fact, citing Yahoo News articles that were originally produced by that very same “trash media.” In a 5ch thread, some users agreed with the point, while others pushed back, arguing that “information TV won’t report is circulating on social media.” Opinions split over where distrust in the media really comes from and how people should be consuming information.

    8/31 (Mon) 12:15

Kohara Bras (34), a Russian-born columnist and TV personality who grew up in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, updated Threads by the 31st with his take on internet users who accuse the media of biased reporting.

Kohara began, “When you check out the accounts of the guys on X screaming stuff like ‘The media sucks! Biased reporting! They should go under!’ — they’re usually posting about current events by quoting Yahoo News.” He then jabbed, “And I always think, are you sure that’s okay? Because the outlet behind that Yahoo News article is the very media you claim to hate.” He added sarcastically, “In the end, when something’s reported in a way that matches their own beliefs, they happily swallow it without question — but when it doesn’t match, they start yelling about ‘biased reporting.’ Maybe we should coin a term for these people, like ‘information-illiterate,’ for this age of information overload.”

    That's some serious blame-shifting.
The ones responsible for the public's right to know are the public themselves — including you.
If you think the media isn't living up to that duty, then you should be the one stepping up to fulfill it.

    >When you're watching the news and you think,
"Why is this getting such huge coverage?"
or, conversely, "Why is everyone so quiet about this?" —
that gut feeling is usually right.
The answer is rarely found in the "facts" themselves — it's in the "structure."

    More than "what's being said,"
what matters is "what's NOT being said."

    The generational divide:
    TV generation:
"Whatever gets big coverage = important."

    Internet generation:
"The very act of staying quiet about something is suspicious."

This gap is exactly what surfaces as "distrust of the media."
    12AnonymousAug 31, 2026 16:36

So when it matches your own beliefs, it's suddenly not biased?

That's the real problem here — do you genuinely believe your own worldview is simply correct?

Background and Key Points of the Debate

At the heart of Kohara’s point is the structural fact that major portals like Yahoo News mostly just redistribute articles originally produced by newspapers and TV stations. He was highlighting the irony that people who repeatedly bash the “trash media” on social media are, in fact, relying on that very media as their source. The thread split over where to place the blame for distrust in reporting. Some voiced frustration over the media failing to report things it should — essentially an accusation of negligence — while others pointed to the structural reality that no outlet can ever achieve total neutrality. The exchange also revealed that social media and online outlets have developed their own biases and misinformation problems in recent years, suggesting this issue can’t be reduced to a simple old-media-versus-new-media question of who’s more trustworthy.

*This article is compiled and summarized from excerpts of the 5channel (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “Kohara Bras responds to cries of “The media sucks! Biased reporting!” with: “The source is literally the media you hate so much… maybe check it yourself.”“

  • Chunichi’s Nao Kō: Fans Worry About His Future as He Wraps Up Year 8

News that CBC Television is putting together a behind-the-scenes special on Chunichi Dragons player Kō Nao sparked a discussion on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board about what’s next for him. Drafted No. 1 in 2018 out of Osaka Toin High School, Nao has bounced between shortstop, pitcher, and outfield and is now entering his eighth season without ever locking down a position. His arm's decent but not strong enough to make it as a power pitcher. He'd like to put that arm to use on defense, but his defense is a disaster, so outfield's all that's left. And his bat is only marginally better than his pitching, so he can't even get into games as a position player. What do you even do with that guy

There were a lot of calculations behind Chunichi taking Nao No. 1. The team wanted to draft a hometown star because Chunichi Shimbun's circulation in Hida-Takayama, Nao's home region, was losing out to rival papers. Personally, I thought his defense would struggle at the pro level, and among high school shortstops that year I actually rated Kaito Kozono of Hotoku Gakuen (drafted No. 1 by Hiroshima) more highly.

I think a team that can't even properly write off a throwaway game is the bigger problem

    Background and key points

Kō Nao was Chunichi’s first-round pick in the 2018 draft out of Osaka Toin High School — that year Nippon-Ham, Yomiuri, and Yakult also placed first-round bids on him, and Chunichi won the negotiating rights in the lottery. In high school he played both shortstop and pitcher and batted cleanup for a Koshien-winning team, earning a reputation as an all-around talent. Since turning pro he’s been shuffled repeatedly between shortstop, pitcher, and outfield, entering his eighth season this year without ever settling into a fixed role. What split opinion in the thread wasn’t so much his usage as how to read the front office’s stance — why he’s been kept on this long without a set position — with some pointing to the team’s relationship with local media as a factor. That said, there’s been no official word yet on the CBC special or on what happens to him next, so it’s worth remembering everything here is speculation and commentary from 5ch, nothing more.

  • Video Girl Ai Creator Masakazu Katsura Stuns Fans With Unusual ‘Occult Art’ Post

Masakazu Katsura, the manga artist behind Video Girl Ai, I’s, and Wingman, updated his X account on August 28 with an occult-themed illustration he called his “favorite.” Since Katsura usually posts pretty-girl art or illustrations focused on butts and panties, 5ch lit up with surprise at the “insane range” on display. Threads mixed reactions to the new artwork itself, comments on his trademark panty artistry, and nostalgic shout-outs to Wingman from 40 years ago.

    Sat, Aug 29, 2:25 PM

On the 28th, manga artist Masakazu Katsura — known for Video Girl Ai, I’s, and Wingman — updated his X account with an occult-style illustration, sparking online surprise at artwork that wasn’t his usual pretty-girl fare, with comments like “his range is insane!”

Katsura regularly posts illustrations, usually of pretty girls or butts, but this time unveiled an occult-themed piece, writing: “This is my favorite — an occult picture, hanging-scroll style. I think this might be a repost, too.”

There's a 'mammoth-level happy!' right there. (a nod to Arale's classic catchphrase from Dr. Slump)

    Background and Talking Points

Masakazu Katsura is known for Wingman (serialized from 1983), I’s (from 1997), and Video Girl Ai (from 1989), among other works, though in recent years his main activity has shifted from new serialized manga to posting illustrations on X. He’s particularly known for photorealistic art that renders every wrinkle in a butt or a pair of panties, earning him the half-joking fan nickname “the panty craftsman.” This time, what sparked discussion was an “occult-style” illustration that broke sharply from his usual style — and it’s that gap itself that drove the surprise. Reactions in the thread were split: some offered harsh critiques of the artwork itself, while others reminisced about his classic works or came away with renewed appreciation for his raw drawing skill. Worth noting: the “tracing” suspicion raised by some posters isn’t something confirmed in the original article — it remains pure speculation from 5ch.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “Video Girl Ai Creator Masakazu Katsura’s Occult Art Shocks the Internet: “I Can’t Believe He Can Draw Like This!” “So Intense” “Kind of Scary…”“

  • Kazlaser Gripes That Shinkansen Curtains Are Too Thin: ‘80% of the Sunlight Gets Through’ — 5ch: ‘Just Use an Eye Mask’

On the August 28 broadcast of the radio show ‘Weekly! Shabe-Laser’ (SBS Radio), Kazlaser complained that the curtains on Shinkansen windows are “too thin.” Even when pulled down, he said, about 80% of the sunlight still gets through, leaving him unable to sleep because of the glare — a comment that sirabee.com turned into an article, which then went viral. On 5ch, the reaction was split: practical suggestions like “just carry an eye mask” made up the majority, but there were also plenty of replies speculating that the curtains “might be deliberately thin to stop people from sleeping through their stop,” as well as comments that went further and judged Kazlaser himself, saying his “whole act has become nothing but complaining.” The thread ended up split between practical advice and commentary on the man himself.

Kazlaser, of the comedy duo Maple Chogokin, appeared on the radio show ‘Weekly! Shabe-Laser’ (SBS Radio) on the 28th. He brought up the in-car environment of the Shinkansen and voiced his displeasure, saying, “The window curtains are way too thin.”

“When you ride the Shinkansen, there’s a curtain on the window, right? I always think that thing is way too thin,” Kazlaser began, pointing out that even when you pull the curtain down to block the sunlight, “about 80% of the light still comes through” — criticizing how poor it is at actually blocking light.

“You pull it down because you don’t want the sunlight, right? But it still flickers through completely…” he said, revealing his discomfort while riding.

The Hyuma Hoshi one is recommended (a novelty eye mask themed after the intense-eyed protagonist of the classic anime Star of the Giants).

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Among the replies, some speculated that the reason Shinkansen window curtains feel thin might be the fire-resistance standards imposed on interior materials, or a deliberate effort to stop passengers from dozing off and missing their stop. However, neither of these is an official explanation from JR — they remain purely user speculation. In fact, unlike local trains, the Shinkansen has fewer stops and shorter stopping times, so if you fall into a deep sleep, the risk of being carried a long way past your intended stop before the next one is significant. While practical opinions along the lines of “this is solved just by using an eye mask” made up the majority of the thread, a fair number of responses also framed Kazlaser’s comment itself as “complainer-like” or “attention-seeking,” with the conversation notably drifting more toward judging the man’s reputation than debating the actual content. Some replies also mentioned Shinkansen cars with private compartments, referencing a service that JR companies have been rolling out in recent years — though the thread being covered here isn’t actually debating the merits of that service itself.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Geisports Sokuho+) thread ‘Kazlaser’s ‘Complaint’ About the Shinkansen: “The window curtains are super thin. Isn’t it too bright when you want to sleep? Why does the Shinkansen never change?”‘

  • NEET Confesses to Striking Out at Every Part-Time Job — 5ch Claps Back: “Get Rejected From 20+ Places Before You Start Despairing”

A thread appeared on 5ch’s Newsokuvip board from a NEET (someone Not in Education, Employment, or Training) seeking advice after being rejected from every single part-time job they applied to. The thread starter cited reasons like coming across as unfriendly in interviews, living in a rural area where jobs assume you can drive, and a bipolar disorder that limits their daily rhythm. Board regulars chimed in with concrete job suggestions — caregiving, truck driving, forklift operation — while others fired back tougher love, telling them to “get rejected from 20+ places before you start despairing.” Responses split between encouragement and blunt, practical advice.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Labor-short industries like caregiving and transport are known for hiring even inexperienced applicants easily, while popular shifts at convenience stores and retailers tend to attract a flood of applications. It’s worth noting that the reasons the thread starter gave for being rejected — coming across as unfriendly, having a license but no talent for driving, a daily rhythm constrained by bipolar disorder — are ultimately just their own guesses, and there’s no way to confirm whether they match the actual hiring criteria. Reactions from the board split between tough-love replies like “stop being soft and come back after applying to 20+ places” and more advice-driven suggestions of jobs the poster could realistically do — showing this isn’t a situation that can be reduced to simple willpower.

  • Why Is Shohei Ohtani’s Bat Slumping? 5ch: ‘His Home Run Distance Dropped 10 Feet’

Shohei Ohtani’s average home run distance has dropped by roughly 10 feet (3 meters), and his swing speed has fallen by about 2 mph, sparking discussion on 5ch’s Live Coverage G board over what’s behind the decline. Theories flew in every direction — some blamed aging, pointing out that Ichiro and Hideki Matsui both hit their career peaks at 31; others suspected a knee issue; still others pointed to the birth of his child and the resulting lifestyle changes, or weight gain from relaxing his diet — with no consensus emerging. On the other hand, some pushed back, noting that an OPS in the .900s is still among the best in all of MLB, and that his sub-2.00 ERA as a pitcher means this hardly counts as a total slump.

Background and key points of this discussion

Ohtani signed a 10-year contract with the Dodgers starting in 2024 and has kept up his two-way career while posting some of the best hitting numbers in the league — but at 32, people are increasingly starting to frame him as being at ‘an age where decline wouldn’t be surprising.’ The thread’s disagreement centered mainly on the cause: theories about aging, knee or elbow injuries, lifestyle changes from raising a child, and weight gain from relaxed diet management were all thrown out, and the lack of one decisive answer is what kept the debate going. One point worth clarifying is the phrase ‘average hitter’ — as some posters pointed out, an OPS in the .900s is still among the best in all of MLB, so this isn’t a slump in any absolute sense, but rather a drop relative to Ohtani’s own exceptionally high bar. It’s also worth noting, per the pushback in the thread, that with a sub-2.00 ERA as a pitcher, he remains an extraordinary presence as a two-way player overall.

Despite its slim, compact body, the Switch 2 can run heavyweight titles like Elden Ring and Dark Souls even in handheld mode — sparking a thread on 5ch’s hardware/industry board (known as “Geha”) asking “why is it so powerful?” Some pointed to the combination of an NVIDIA chip and DLSS (AI upscaling), while others pushed back with “carrying around PS4-level power doesn’t mean much at this point” and “handheld mode still falls short of home consoles.” The debate split between those praising the leap forward for handhelds and those pointing out the limits of the hardware itself.

    Re: #72
Well, compared to the PS5, which is just huge for no reason…

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The reason Switch 2’s handheld mode has drawn attention comes down to the combination of a custom NVIDIA chip and DLSS (AI upscaling) mentioned in the thread. Rather than rendering at full resolution like a home console, the system draws at a lower resolution and lets AI fill in the detail — a mechanism that preserves the look of sharpness even within the limits of battery life and heat dissipation. The thread split between voices praising this as “a leap forward for handhelds” and those countering that “it still falls short compared to PS4/PS5-level home consoles,” with the disconnect largely coming down to whether people were comparing it against other handhelds or against home consoles in the first place. It’s also worth noting that the complaints about battery degradation and heat were limited to individual anecdotes, and no statistical failure-rate data appeared anywhere in the thread, so those claims should be taken with a grain of salt.

The 24-Hour TV charity marathon’s finish-line staging and security setup have long been a recurring talking point every year, and this kind of interruption isn’t unprecedented either. This time, the debate centered less on whether the act itself was right or wrong and more on whether his motive was legitimate — some saw it as a pure attention-grabbing content stunt, others as an act exposing television’s hypocrisy. There’s also the little-known legal question of how far filming on public roads can actually restrict pedestrians’ rights, and 5ch showed some confusion over whether a permit was even in place. It’s also easy to overlook that the label “nuisance YouTuber” itself doesn’t necessarily correlate subscriber count with actual real-world influence.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “’24-Hour TV’ marathon ‘placard interrupter’ is a ‘nuisance YouTuber with 450 subscribers,’ explains self-serving motive.”

  • 5ch VIP Regular Live-Blogs Solo Trip to Kamakura, Touring Temples, Shrines, and Local Eats

A thread went up on 5ch’s Newsspeed VIP board where an anonymous poster, writing under an ASCII-art (AA) emoticon character, live-blogged a solo walk around Kamakura with photos along the way. After riding the Enoden line to Kamakura Station, they worked through a mix of classic and slightly off-the-beaten-path spots — Omachi Yakumo Shrine, Hokoku-ji Temple (famous for its bamboo grove), a long-running crepe shop on Komachi-dori, and cookies from a local convent.

Rather than sparking debate or arguments, the thread’s charm comes from other regulars — each posting under their own AA character — chiming in with “this brings back memories” and “actually, I’ve been there too,” turning it into a shared, freewheeling group commentary on the trip.

    Background and Discussion Points

The thread’s central figure, the “/ *・ω・ヽ” ASCII-art (AA) character, is a long-running staple of live-blogging threads on 5ch’s VIP board — each poster has their own signature AA, and regulars recognize and banter with each other’s characters as part of the culture. The format seen here, where one poster live-blogs a trip with photos while other posters chime in using their own AA characters, is a classic VIP genre known as “travel live-blogging” (ryokou jikkyo). Unlike a typical curated article, it has no script and no punchline. To an unfamiliar reader it might look like a meaningless string of emoticons, but this isn’t trolling or spam — it’s a stylistic tradition the board has kept alive for years. Also worth noting: the remark in post #97 about “the temple where Tsurutaro Kataoka committed seppuku in Taiheiki” isn’t about a real historical figure — it’s a joking reference to the role actor Tsurutaro Kataoka played in the NHK historical drama “Taiheiki,” and reading it as literal history would be a misunderstanding. No arguments or disagreements break out in the thread; what’s preserved here is simply the loose, easygoing way regulars catch up with each other while touring Kamakura’s well-known sights — a kind of interaction unique to this style of board.
