  • Kitao Akira: ‘Whoever Invented Pre-Cut Vegetables Is a Genius’ — Praises Supermarket Bestseller

Former women’s pro wrestler and TV personality Kitao Akira appeared on TOKYO MX’s “5-ji ni Muchu!” on September 1 and praised pre-cut vegetables sold at supermarkets, saying “I think whoever came up with that is a genius.” The show also featured survey results on how often different generations use kitchen knives. The comment sparked a thread on 5ch, where opinions were split: some praised the products as “convenient and a lifesaver” and said “the pre-cut garnish scallions are the one thing I buy,” while others raised safety and nutrition concerns, saying they’re “washed in sodium hypochlorite, which isn’t good for you” or that “vitamins leach out, lowering their nutritional value,” and still others questioned “why bother paying extra for something like this.”

Kitao Akira: “I Think Whoever Came Up With It Is a Genius” — Praises Supermarket Smash Hit, “Why Didn’t This Exist Before”

Former women’s pro wrestler and TV personality Kitao Akira (59) appeared live on TOKYO MX’s “5-ji ni Muchu!” (weekdays 5:00 PM) on the 1st and talked about cooking.

The show introduced an article summarizing survey results and trends on how often people use kitchen knives, broken down by generation.

Also, they already sell ready-made gyoza — what's with people who buy the wrappers and insist on making them by hand? Just buy the gyoza already. It's not "homemade tastes better," just buy gyoza that's already tasty from the start.

Store-bought packs are small so you end up buying a bunch anyway, but that same money buys ingredients for cheaper. People who cook for themselves tend to be big eaters, so buying store-bought would blow up the household budget.

    23AnonymousSep 1, 2026 17:44
The bags of pre-cut vegetables are filled with acetylene gas to keep them from spoiling. Once you cut them, they start rotting from the cut surface, which is why this wasn't possible before. Open the bag and you can watch it rot before your eyes.

Pre-cut vegetables are soaked in diluted hypochlorous acid. Probably fine for the elderly, but I don't think you should feed it to kids.

Sodium hypochlorite is used in the manufacturing process of pre-cut vegetables, so it's very dangerous to the human body.

If you want to live a long life, don't eat it.
    32AnonymousSep 1, 2026 17:49
Water-soluble vitamins definitely leach out (fat-soluble vitamins and minerals probably survive), and it doesn't keep as long.

    What's so genius about that?
    33AnonymousSep 1, 2026 17:50
I'll buy it if it's marked down cheap, but "convenient because it's pre-cut" isn't a reason I'd buy it.
    34AnonymousSep 1, 2026 17:50
Pre-cut vegetables get washed like crazy to keep bugs from getting mixed in, so there's basically zero vitamins left.

Not everything needs to be trashed. If you want to cut it yourself, fine — but even if it costs a bit more, pre-cut saves effort, you use it all up, and it's convenient.
    58AnonymousSep 1, 2026 18:06
    Re: #56
You're just trying to justify yourself.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

In the manufacturing process for pre-cut vegetables, it’s standard practice to wash them with sodium hypochlorite or hypochlorous acid water for sterilization, and to seal the bags with a nitrogen/CO2 gas mix to prevent discoloration and spoilage — one poster in the thread even corrected their own earlier claim of “acetylene gas.” Hypochlorous acid-based agents are approved as food additives and are widely used in school lunches and restaurant chains too, but the thread reached no consensus on safety, with claims that it’s “not good for you” running up against counterarguments that “it’s used in plenty of other foods too.” It is a food-science fact that cutting and washing cause water-soluble vitamins to diminish, but whether that makes it “not genius” is where opinions diverged — voices prioritizing convenience were roughly matched by those worried about nutrition and price.

  • Familiar Faces in NHK Street-Interview Duo Spark “Was This Staged?” Buzz Online

Two women who appeared in an NHK street-interview segment were recognized by users on 5ch, sparking a thread on the Geinou/Sports Breaking News+ board (“Geisoku Sokuho+”) full of reactions like “Was this staged?” and “I was shocked when they showed up.” The interviewees are reportedly Emi Ando and Nonoko, and it’s the fact that they were presented as ordinary passersby that caught social media’s attention. The thread split between those who think “good-looking people are simply more likely to get picked for street interviews” and those who suspect “the network arranges people in advance,” with the discussion eventually drifting into complaints about NHK’s low license-fee subscription rate.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Suspicion of “staged” street interviews isn’t a new topic — it’s long been known that in places like train stations and busy shopping districts, where passersby tend to be reluctant to be interviewed, TV networks sometimes secure interviewees through casting agencies or extras agencies. Whether these two women are actually affiliated with an agency hasn’t been confirmed as of this writing; the thread’s claim that the name “Emi Ando” looked familiar is limited to a connection with mahjong-related media, and no official explanation or confirmation has come from the show itself. The debate mainly splits into two camps: a “natural selection” theory — that better-looking people are simply more willing to be interviewed — and a “staging” theory — that the network arranges people in advance — and neither has been settled. Some replies also drifted into the separate topic of NHK’s declining license-fee payment rate, which should be read as distinct from the question of whether this particular interview was genuine.

  • Morning Musume. Leader Miki Nonaka to Join Every Fall Tour Date, With Care for Her Bad Back

An official announcement revealed that Miki Nonaka, leader of Morning Musume.’26, will join every date of the fall tour after consulting with doctors — though she’ll sit out certain songs to protect her back. The statement also notes her lineup of performances could change depending on how she’s doing. On 5ch’s live discussion threads, reactions were split: some fans hoped she wouldn’t push herself too hard, while others fired off harsher takes like “isn’t it time she just announced her graduation,” alongside comments about how demanding the choreography is and references to past members whose conditions worsened from performing.

    66AnonymousSep 1, 2026 18:40
    Re: #56
She's barely performing anyway, so that's not really gonna happen

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Miki Nonaka will take part in the tour with a trimmed-down song list because of her back condition, but this kind of arrangement — “joining every show while sitting out select songs” — has precedent within Hello! Project, and commenters point to Risa Irie’s spring 2025 tour (where her performances were cut to around six songs) as a comparison. It’s easy to miss but worth noting that this decision came after consulting doctors, and the official statement explicitly says the details could change depending on her condition. The thread’s split opinions came down to a conflict between fans who supported her performing despite the risk and those who felt she should announce graduation if the symptoms persist, with how much the choreography can realistically be scaled back also becoming a point of debate. It’s also worth noting that neither the thread nor the official announcement has specified an exact diagnosis or details of her recovery, so a lot of the commentary is speculation.

    Background and Key Points

“Minna de Ooyasan” is an anonymous-partnership investment product structured under Japan’s Real Estate Specified Joint Enterprise Act, marketed widely through TV commercials with promises of roughly 6-7% annual distributions and repayment of principal at the end of the contract term. This action is Osaka Prefecture revoking the company’s business license under that law — it isn’t itself a formal finding of bankruptcy or fraud, but it does mean the premise for the business to keep operating is gone, making this a de facto end to the scheme. In the thread, commenters repeatedly pointed out that, unlike REITs, which are listed and can be freely traded, this product offered poor liquidity for investors’ money, and that the high yield itself should have been a red flag. Meanwhile, how much of the roughly 37,000 investors’ money will be recovered depends on the outcome of ongoing lawsuits, and no clear picture has emerged yet. Going forward, the key question will be how well investors understood, at the time they signed up, that a high-yield, unlisted real estate investment product like this one carries no guarantee of principal.

  • Erina Mano Reveals Secret World Cup Stories on TV for the First Time — 5ch: “Where else are you gonna find a 35-year-old this gorgeous?”

Former Hello! Project idol Erina Mano appeared on Fuji TV’s “Keru to Meru” on August 31 and, for the first time on television, opened up about secret behind-the-scenes World Cup stories from married life with her husband, Japan national team midfielder Gaku Shibasaki. The show also featured a segment where Travis Japan’s Shimekake proposed nutrient-packed meals for a J-League player’s wife. On 5ch’s Hello! Project board, comments piled up nostalgically over her rare TV appearance (“She’s alive?!”, “Haven’t seen her in 10 years”), while the thread also buzzed over the reason behind Shibasaki’s tears and reminiscences tied to a national teammate’s reported relationship.

    Background and Talking Points

Erina Mano is known as a former solo idol from Hello! Project who, since marrying, has largely stayed out of the spotlight — which is why the thread filled up with surprised reactions like “She’s alive?!” and “Haven’t seen her in 10 years.” The other major focus was the reason behind the tears her husband Gaku Shibasaki shed during the World Cup, tied to reminiscing about a national teammate’s reported relationship, with some posts even drawing comparisons between the 2022 and 2026 tournaments. That said, as exchanges like “they haven’t broken up” and “that’s just speculation” show, none of this was necessarily stated outright on the program itself — it’s largely built on fans’ memories and guesswork. Whether Mano will resume activity as a “mom talent” going forward also wasn’t explicitly announced on the show, and should be read as fans getting ahead of themselves.

  • Dishwashers ‘more of a lifesaver than expected’ — 5ch: ‘Pre-rinsing is just a quick rinse, so easy’

A thread appeared on 5ch’s Newsoku VIP board where a poster reported that after starting to use a dishwasher, it turned out to be ‘more of a lifesaver than expected.’ The original poster bought a secondhand countertop model for just a few thousand yen and says cleanup after cooking pasta became dramatically easier. Replies poured in with the questions everyone wonders about before buying one: whether pre-rinsing to remove oily grime is really necessary, how people find space to install the thing, and whether it’s big enough inside to fit large cookware like frying pans. On the other hand, there were also skeptical takes like ‘if you still have to pre-rinse, what’s the point’ and ‘you can just wash things between cooking steps,’ sparking a debate over how much dishwashers actually streamline housework.

    That's unfair to say.
I've had chronic 'housewife's eczema' (dishpan hands) that won't heal for years, so I can't wash dishes without gloves — which means washing just the frying pan while cooking isn't an option for me.
That's why, if I'm going to pre-rinse at all, I just end up doing the whole wash right then.
I'm not against dishwashers at all, though somebody in here is acting unhinged.
The dishwasher I own doesn't fit a frying pan, so I ended up not using it anymore, but if it fit I'd probably still be using it.

If you cook normally, the dishes pile up fast — not just the frying pan, but mixing bowls, pots, ladles, the rice cooker's inner lid, colanders, cooking chopsticks, measuring cups. You can usually wash most of that between cooking steps, but not having to wash the dishes after a meal — think about how much that benefits time-strapped modern people.

Seriously, what even is this phenomenon?
Does it touch on some kind of complex people have?
If so, it's weird that people single out countertop models as the enemy, though.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Countertop dishwashers that require no installation work and can simply be placed in the kitchen are widely available at low prices, and it’s not unusual to find secondhand units for just a few thousand yen. In the thread, real examples came up too, like one bought secondhand for 6,000 yen and another for 15,960 yen. On the other hand, many models have small interior capacities that can’t fit frying pans or pots, and as pointed out in the replies, the hassle of pre-rinsing and securing installation space tend to be hurdles before buying. Where opinions in the thread diverged was over how much benefit people actually feel from a dishwasher — those who want to offload housework entirely clashed with those who feel it’s enough to just wash things bit by bit between cooking steps. Note that the later part of the thread devolved into an exchange of personal attacks over people’s experiences using it; this article focuses only on the exchanges related to the product and how it’s used.

  • Labor Standards Offices Scrap Blanket ‘Overtime Under 45 Hours a Month’ Guidance — Labor Groups Warn It ‘Could Encourage More Overtime’

Labor Standards Inspection Offices have, as of September 1, stopped issuing blanket administrative guidance urging companies to keep overtime under 45 hours a month. The legal overtime cap itself (in principle, 45 hours a month and 360 hours a year) remains unchanged, but labor groups warn the move “could end up encouraging more overtime.” On 5ch, opinions split between those who felt it was unnecessary to uniformly restrict even workers who want to earn more, and those worried it would fuel an increase in unpaid (“service”) overtime and deaths from overwork. Many commenters also vented frustration at how toothless the Labor Standards Office is in practice, since it rarely acts unless someone files a report.

But the statute of limitations only reaches back 2 years, so you'd have to quit first.
    Just 2 years is ridiculous.

No amount of overtime matters if it doesn't produce results.
Say you pay 1.25x or 1.5x wages for overtime but only get 1.1x the output — that's a net loss.
Expecting 1.25x-1.5x output just because someone worked past the 8-hour mark is absurd anyway.

    Re: #102
In practice, exceeding it is fine.
The Labor Standards Office won't move unless someone reports it, and then it becomes a whole thing about who ratted.
It's not like they show up once a year to check hours either.
At this point the Labor Standards Office is basically a joke — it doesn't actually do anything useful.
Plenty of companies barely give paid leave and get away with it too.
It's nothing like speed-trap-style enforcement where you actually get caught.
    103AnonymousSep 1, 2026 15:11

When are people going to realize that mindset is already wrong?

Wages aren't rising in proportion to inflation, which is why people everywhere are struggling to make ends meet —

is just plain messed up if you think about it.

Doubling the working-age population doesn't double GDP.
Doubling working hours doesn't double GDP either.

The more people who work, the lower the per-person pay.
The longer the hours, the lower the effective hourly wage.

The only ones who benefit from a bigger workforce and longer hours are big-company executives — over 90% of the population just gets poorer.

So why does the government want to increase the workforce and working hours?

    There's no labor shortage!
There's just a shortage of CHEAP labor!

Because it brings in more social insurance premiums and taxes —
and because it keeps people too busy to stop and think 'wait, something's off here.'

Working people without giving them time to question anything, while cranking up taxes and deductions — that's the single most important thing when it comes to running a workforce of slaves.

So is the interpretation basically: without even filing a special clause,
you can suddenly do like 70-100 hours of overtime a month for about half a year,
then do 45 hours a month for the other half,
as long as the yearly total stays within 720 hours?

Not just with labor issues — in this country, if you blow the whistle on wrongdoing, it's the whistleblower who gets frozen out of society.
No doubt about it, the whole thing is rotten at its core.

Background and key points of debate

This change does not abolish the statutory overtime cap itself — 45 hours a month and 360 hours a year, a rule with penalties under the 2019 work-style reform legislation. Rather, it’s an operational change: even when a company has filed an Article 36 agreement with a special clause, the Labor Standards Office had additionally been pushing companies to “try to keep it under 45 hours anyway” through administrative guidance, and it’s that extra layer of guidance that’s being dropped. The thread split between those arguing that people who want to earn more shouldn’t be uniformly held back, and those worried this will fuel more unpaid overtime and overwork-related deaths. There was also recurring distrust of the system’s effectiveness itself — comments like “the Labor Standards Office won’t act without a report” and “foreign workers’ hours are strictly tracked while Japanese workers’ hours can balloon indefinitely” — suggesting that, guidance or not, the perception of the Labor Standards Office’s oversight function is already quite low.

  • Kazlaser: ‘Shinjuku Is the Most Livable Spot in Tokyo’ — Better Than ‘Suburban’ Setagaya

Kazlaser, of the comedy duo Maple Chogokin, named Shinjuku as the most livable area in Tokyo on the August 28 broadcast of the radio show “Weekly! Shaberaser,” saying it’s “way better than suburban Setagaya.” The show also introduced the Mori Memorial Foundation’s “National City Evaluation Ranking,” noting that among 136 cities nationwide (excluding Tokyo’s 23 wards), Osaka City took first place, Hamamatsu City ranked 13th, and Shizuoka City ranked 14th. On the 5ch thread, opinions split over which part of Shinjuku he actually meant, with some pointing out that “Shinjuku” covers very different-feeling districts — Yotsuya, Ushigome, and Yodobashi — while others brought up the lack of supermarkets in the area.

Kazlaser of comedy duo Maple Chogokin appeared on the radio program “Weekly! Shaberaser” (SBS Radio) on the 28th and talked about the most livable area in Tokyo.

The show also covered news of the “National City Evaluation Ranking,” released by the Mori Memorial Foundation, a think tank under Mori Building.

In the ranking, which evaluated 136 cities nationwide (excluding Tokyo’s 23 wards), Osaka City came out on top, while within Shizuoka Prefecture, Hamamatsu City placed 13th and Shizuoka City 14th, with category breakdowns like “environment” and “transportation access” highlighted for each city.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Mori Memorial Foundation’s “National City Evaluation Ranking” scores multiple categories — including economy, research, cultural exchange, livability, environment, and transportation access — to rank 136 cities nationwide, excluding Tokyo’s 23 wards. This time, Osaka City took the overall top spot, while Hamamatsu City (13th) and Shizuoka City (14th) from Shizuoka Prefecture also made the list. It’s worth noting that the “livability” Kazlaser talked about on air wasn’t drawn from this ranking’s actual figures, but was based on his own personal experience of living there. Where the thread split was over whether Shinjuku can really be lumped together as one area — many pointed out a big gap in living environment between the Yodobashi district, home to Kabukicho, and the quieter Yotsuya and Ushigome districts. While the area around Shinjuku Gyoen was praised as quiet with few people around, commenters also specifically flagged the practical downside of having few nearby supermarkets, underscoring how “livability” discussions tend to gloss over differences within a single district.

  • GTA6 Preorders Surge 606% for PS5, 127% for Xbox After New Footage Drops

Sensor Tower, a research firm tracking GTA6 preorders, has reported that following the new footage released on August 27, PS5 preorders jumped 606% on that day alone, while Xbox Series X|S preorders rose 127%. Before the footage dropped, cumulative preorders stood at 77% PS5 and 23% Xbox, and the surge comes after Rockstar had gone without releasing any gameplay footage since May 2025. On 5ch’s hardware board (Geha), opinions split over whether this gap simply reflects the difference in installed hardware base or signals real trouble for the Xbox camp.

GTA6 preorders opened on June 25, 2026, and research firm Sensor Tower has been tracking preorder numbers since the day before, June 24. Rockstar hadn’t released any gameplay footage since its second trailer in May 2025, and under those conditions, cumulative preorders built up right before the new footage dropped reached an estimated 4.6 million units according to Sensor Tower, broken down as 77% for the PlayStation 5 (PS5) version and 23% for the Xbox Series X|S version. Note that in Japan, the domestic package version doesn’t include a disc, and the PS5 version’s code is set to expire 170 days after release.

According to Sensor Tower, in the two days following the August 27 footage reveal, GTA6 preorders rose 572% compared to the prior 30-day average, and on the reveal day itself, the PlayStation 5 version reportedly recorded a 606% increase while the Xbox version saw a 127% increase.

    Background and Points of Debate

It’s worth noting that Sensor Tower’s figures are independent estimates compiled by the firm, not official sales data. GTA6 arrives over a decade after its predecessor, and since developer Rockstar had gone a long stretch without releasing gameplay footage, this reveal is thought to have driven the preorder surge. On the thread, opinions clashed over the gap between PS5 and Xbox preorder shares: some argue it simply reflects the current generation’s installed-base gap, where PS5 holds a commanding lead, while others see it as evidence that Xbox-camp users are waiting for the PC version or migrating to other platforms — no consensus was reached. Separately from overseas preorder trends, it’s also worth keeping in mind that Japan’s domestic PS5 package version doesn’t include a disc, and its download code is set to expire 170 days after release.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Since 2025, Shoko Nakagawa has repeatedly become a target of online debate — over posts about a stray cat she rescued and comments about how she obtained a Switch 2 through a lottery — and this latest “This is why I hate X” post has, to some extent, been read as an extension of that pattern. Suggestive posts that don’t explain their reasoning tend to draw sympathy easily, but because the true intent is unclear, they also invite speculation. In this thread too, sympathetic voices arguing “if she’s tired, she should just take a break” existed alongside skeptical ones — informed by her past history — asking “isn’t this self-inflicted?” It’s not unusual for a celebrity’s social-media-fatigue post to trigger this kind of polarized reaction, and the response in this thread is a typical example of that.
