  • Sushi: Skilled Craft or Just Slapping Fish on Rice? 5ch Erupts in Debate

On 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” (Live Commentary) board, a post comparing Italian pizza with Japanese sushi touched off a debate over whether sushi really deserves to be called a “craft.” It started with the claim that “calling sushi cooking is absurd when all you’re doing is cutting fish and arranging it,” which drew a wave of pushback: “sashimi requires learning dozens of different cutting techniques depending on the fish.” The thread gradually drifted into an argument over whether there’s really any difference between working a supermarket fish counter and a sushi chef’s skill, eventually spiraling into an unresolvable back-and-forth over how many types of fish a typical independent sushi shop actually handles.

Pizza's got real culinary craft to it — how you arrange the toppings, how you work the oven.
Sushi's just a slice of fish dropped on white rice, and people just decide to call that cooking. Calling this "culture" is a stretch at this point.

Anyone who seriously thinks sushi is just cutting fish and slapping it on rice should go buy a whole horse mackerel and try filleting it yourself. You need to learn 50 different cutting techniques AND do it cleanly.

Seriously, quit posting like someone who'd slice their own finger open with a knife lol

And? Even part-timers at a bottom-tier supermarket can do that.
Even a random housewife could pull it off (the poster uses a crude slang term for "woman" here).
Guess in Japan, if even bottom-tier workers can handle an "easy" job, it gets dressed up as skilled craftsmanship — lol

If handling a ton of fish types makes you amazing, then every part-timer at a family restaurant with dozens of menu items — and more added all the time — is a craftsman too.

    86AnonymousSep 5, 2026 21:12

What kind of comeback is that? I heard it at a place I go to regularly.
Sushi chefs change what they serve by season, and what comes in — and its quality — varies day to day,
so without the knowledge to serve a wide variety, an independent shop just can't survive
    92AnonymousSep 5, 2026 21:17

You're the one that's unbelievable here.

To cut to the conclusion: for an independently owned sushi restaurant, having "20 types" of fish is entirely plausible. In fact, it's a very realistic, well-balanced number for a typical independent shop. Compared to major conveyor-belt sushi chains (which always carry 80 to 100+ types), it might seem low, but for an independent shop maintaining quality while restocking daily, it's quite reasonable — for reasons like the following. The reason the number of types is "—

lol, turns out the chains have more

    Re: #94
Wow, you sure can talk big based on nothing but guesswork
(that's what's called "boiling tea in your navel" — a Japanese idiom for something so ridiculous it's laughable)

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Becoming a sushi chef is generally understood to require years of apprenticeship at specialty restaurants, mastering different filleting techniques for each fish species, freshness management, and how to handle vinegared rice. At the same time, supermarkets routinely block-cut fish for sashimi at their seafood counters, so “cutting fish” itself isn’t a task exclusive to specialty shops. What the thread really argued over wasn’t so much whether skill is involved, but how many types of fish a typical independently owned sushi restaurant handles — with some insisting around 20 types is plenty, and others arguing it should be 40 to 50, neither side budging. That said, the range of fish handled varies enormously depending on whether it’s a chain or an independent shop, as well as by region and season, and there’s no official statistic on this. It’s worth noting that the specific numbers cited in the thread are nothing more than individual posters’ personal experiences.

  • Matsumoto Wakana, 42, Stuns in Knit Sweater — Fans Rave ‘Perfect’ and ‘Best Shot Ever’

A photo of actress Matsumoto Wakana (42) wearing an orange knit sweater in a TV drama was reported on Yahoo News and sparked a huge reaction on a thread on 5ch’s Geinou/Sports News+ board. In line with the article’s headline, comments praising her as “perfect” and calling it “the best shot ever” poured in, while others were skeptical about how the photo actually looked, with remarks like “it didn’t fit as perfectly as I expected” and “when I did an image search she looked ordinary — maybe this is just a miracle shot.” The thread also brought up her role as the protagonist’s older sister in Kamen Rider Den-O, and an anecdote from her days paying her dues working part-time at an eel restaurant, where she reportedly turned down advances from comedians Koji Imada and Tutorial’s Tokui — steering the conversation from her looks toward her career history.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Matsumoto Wakana entered show business in her teens but spent many years paying her dues, and — as symbolized by the anecdote of turning down a famous comedian while working part-time at an eel restaurant — she’s known as a late bloomer whose fame only took off from her late 30s onward. Opinions in the thread split over how accurately the news photo captured her “real” appearance: alongside the praise, a fair number of skeptical comments claimed she looked ordinary in an image search. This reflects how much a celebrity photo’s impression can shift depending on the photographer, lighting, and filters. It’s also worth noting that the stories about her time on Kamen Rider Den-O and her run-ins with comedians are hearsay from an anonymous message board, not verified primary sources.

  • Morning Musume’s New MV Hits 193K Views in 24 Hours — But It’s YouTube’s New View-Count Rules Stealing the Spotlight

A post on the Hello!Project board noted that the MV for Morning Musume.’26’s new single “Yes ka No ka Watashi ka” (“Yes or No or Me”) racked up 193,000 views in the 24 hours after release, sparking a flurry of comparisons with the group’s past MV numbers. But the real focus wasn’t the ranking itself — it was the fact that YouTube changed its view-count system on the night of August 27, so that even much shorter watch times now count as a “view.” Opinions split on whether it’s fair to compare numbers from before and after the change, and the thread also lit up with comparisons to Juice=Juice’s new single (released the same day) and complaints about the agency’s promotional strategy.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

YouTube’s view-count system had long required a certain minimum watch time before a play would register, but according to multiple posts in the thread, that changed on the night of August 27, 2026, to a system where even a single second of playback counts as a view. If true, this means MVs released after the change can’t be directly compared to those released before it in terms of view count. In the thread, opinions were split between those calling this new figure of 193,000 views the group’s best-ever result, and those arguing it only looks impressive because of the count change — notably, both sides accepted that the spec change itself happened, they just disagreed on how to interpret it. Some also pointed out that likes and comments haven’t grown nearly as much as views, raising questions about the limits of judging popularity by view count alone.

  • Tomomi Itano Apologizes for Filming in Hotel’s Communal Bath Changing Room — 5ch: ‘This Is Turning Into a Parade of “Special Permissions”‘

Former AKB48 member Tomomi Itano apologized on September 5 after social media users pointed out that she had filmed inside the changing room of the communal bath at The Ritz-Carlton Nikko, in Tochigi, for a YouTube video documenting a family trip. Itano explained that she had “received special filming permission from the hotel,” but since the changing room is a space shared by all guests, a thread on 5ch’s Geinou/Sports News Plus board split between users questioning whether “a luxury hotel would never grant permission like that” and those who suspected “maybe it was booked out exclusively.” Some posters even claimed to have contacted the hotel directly, and debate over what really happened continued.

Former AKB48 member and TV personality Tomomi Itano updated her account on X (formerly Twitter) on September 5. In response to criticism on social media over her YouTube filming, she apologized and explained what had happened.

On September 3, Itano had posted a video titled “【Summer Vacation】A Family Trip to Nikko With Just the Three of Us After a While 【vlog】,” showing her family of three spending time at The Ritz-Carlton Nikko. The footage sparked controversy online for showing her filming in the changing room of the communal bath, a shared area of the hotel.

If not, letting someone roll camera in the changing room is wild — what an outrageous hotel the Ritz-Carlton would be.

Yeah, it's a shared space, and on top of that it's a changing room where people get naked…
If this is real, other streamers are going to start seeking the same permission, and hotels of that caliber are about to get flooded with phone calls.
    5AnonymousSep 5, 2026 21:07
Would they really hand out permission for that?
    It's not like it's some no-name hotel.

Background and Key Points of Debate

At luxury hotels, communal bath changing rooms are generally subject to prior approval and restrictions on filming — even personal filming — in order to protect the privacy of fellow guests, and the main point of contention here was whether Itano’s explanation squared with that standard practice. Within the thread, opinions split between those who suspected “it must have been booked out exclusively” and those who, judging from how the footage looked, argued it “doesn’t look like an exclusive booking” — but neither view has been confirmed by Itano herself or by the hotel. As of September 5, The Ritz-Carlton Nikko has issued no official explanation regarding the circumstances of the filming permission, and it’s easy to overlook that Itano’s claim in her apology of having “received special permission” remains unverified.

  • Nintendo Direct 9/9 Finale Predictions Heat Up on 5ch: “They’d Better Show 3D Mario This Time”

With a Nintendo Direct scheduled for September 9, 2026, a 5ch thread speculating about what title will close out the show — the “tori” (finale slot) — was buzzing. Past Directs have saved big reveals for last: Donkey Kong Bananza in April 2025, a new Fire Emblem that September, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in June 2026, and many users built their predictions on this “pattern.” The sticking point: since the day before is set to cover a Zelda 40th-anniversary retrospective, will they hold back a separate, brand-new Zelda title as the secret finale, or is a new 3D Mario — silent for nearly a decade now — the real favorite? Voices pushing for Pokémon or Smash, and skeptics questioning the leak reports, mixed into the debate as well.

Showing nothing but the logos for Metroid Prime 4 and Bayonetta 3 was a cheap move, not very Nintendo-like,
but Nintendo was desperate back then —
the Wii U had flopped hard, the 3DS wasn't doing great in the West, and the Switch had no backward compatibility with the previous generation, so they were right on the edge.
Nintendo today, with 160 million Switch 1 units out there generating royalty income basically on autopilot, has a completely different level of breathing room

    Re: #80
Yeah, Nintendo totally pulls stuff like that

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Nintendo has a track record of saving new-title reveals for the grand finale of its Directs, and the thread pointed to a pattern as evidence: Donkey Kong Bananza in April 2025, a new Fire Emblem in September 2025, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in June 2026. For the September 9 broadcast, opinion split on one key question — given that the previous day’s segment was set to cover the Zelda 40th anniversary (the movie and Ocarina of Time), what would headline the actual finale, separate from that main lineup? Several lines of reasoning came up: pent-up demand for 3D Mario (frustration that it’s been roughly nine years of silence since Odyssey), the theory that the Pokémon “Namikaze” reveal would get its own dedicated Direct, and the read that Smash Bros. is too soon to announce given how recently Kirby Air Riders launched. Some posts read deeply into the live-action Zelda movie’s release date shifting from March 2027 to May and then to April, tying it to the Direct’s structure — but these are all fan speculation built on circumstantial evidence, not official announcements or confirmed information. The “Mario” leak that surfaced also came with no substantiation, and it’s worth noting that skepticism about it showed up within the thread itself.

  • “Japan used to cherish its youth” gets pushback — 5ch says “the Ice Age generation had it way worse”

A post on 5ch claiming that “old Japan had a bit more of a culture that didn’t just use up and discard its young people” sparked a wave of generational comparisons. The poster argued that “it felt like promising young people used to get picked up by society’s watchful eye,” but this was met with a flood of pushback insisting things were actually harsher back then — comments like “in the Ice Age generation, people dying from exploitative jobs was just normal” and “in the last war they were even turned into human torpedoes for kamikaze attacks.” Some pointed to the structural shift from falling birthrates and an aging population, where it’s now common to have four grandparents doting on a single grandchild, making this far from a simple case of “the old days were better.”

With the falling birthrate and aging population, it's become normal to have 4 grandparents doting on just 1 grandchild.
These days corporal punishment and workplace harassment are banned, so kids are overprotected and there are way more young people who can't handle any pressure.
I think it's the adults' fault that spoiling them too much led to so many kids refusing to go to school.

The Ice Age generation can't even land a job in the first place, can they?

Background and key points of this discussion

The term “Ice Age generation” itself refers to those who came of job-hunting age from the mid-1990s through the early 2000s, unable to land regular employment and instead forced into unstable jobs and grueling overwork — it was widely reported as a social problem at the time. The wartime kamikaze corps, and even earlier child labor in farming villages, also stand as historical facts of “young people treated as expendable.” What divided the thread wasn’t really whether “a culture of cherishing the young” existed in the past, but rather that each generation has a different standard for what counts as “cherishing,” and the overall amount of slack in society differed. There’s a real tension here: falling birthrates and an aging population have shrunk the number of adults available to support the young, even as labor protections have advanced — and this structural nuance, which can’t be resolved by a simple “which era was worse” comparison, never got fully spelled out in the replies.

  • “Reiwa no Tora” President Hayashi Complains: “Talk of Pedigree Not Mattering Is Just a Front — They Only Hire from Todai, Kyodai, Waseda, Keio”

Hayashi Naohiro (41), the second-generation host of the entrepreneur reality show “Reiwa no Tora” (“Tigers of Reiwa”), sparked discussion on 5ch’s Geinosupo Sokuho+ board after posting on X (formerly Twitter) messages aimed at cram school owners and exam-taking students nationwide, arguing that “academic pedigree is justice” and that “saying pedigree or exam scores don’t matter is just lip service.” Hayashi is also known for remarks like “companies only hire from Todai, Kyodai, Waseda, and Keio,” and the story was picked up by Yahoo! News as well. The thread saw split opinions over the real relationship between academic background and hiring/promotion, the perceived hierarchy between Todai/Kyodai and Waseda/Keio, and the reality behind companies that claim to be “pedigree-blind” in hiring.

    Sat, Sep 5, 7:48 PM

Hayashi Naohiro (41), the second-generation host of “Reiwa no Tora,” updated his X (formerly Twitter) account on the 12th with a message to exam-taking students nationwide.

Hayashi called out: “Cram school owners across the country, why so quiet? You run cram schools because pedigree matters, don’t you?! Say something! If you’ve got nothing to say here, just let your kids go to a bottom-tier university [Fラン, ‘F-rank,’ slang for the lowest-tier schools]. Do you know why the middle-school exam boom is heating up? Because academic pedigree is justice — it’s a measure of effort! All you cram school heads out there — speak up!”

Japan's faith in academic pedigree is really just collecting the strongest cards to win a card game — a lot of these people have nothing to show for what they study, or studied, in college.

It's like a Pokémon card battle.

They'll tell you Japan's entrance exams are soft by comparison.
I actually think Japanese education gives each student a fair number of chances to develop their own individuality, though?

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Hayashi Naohiro is known as the successor host of the entrepreneur-support show “Reiwa no Tora,” and this latest post was marked by provocative language aimed at the cram school industry and exam-taking students. The thread split over whether it’s valid to claim “pedigree is justice” based on the hiring records of major corporations, with many pointing out that a hierarchy exists even between Todai/Kyodai and Waseda/Keio, and others sarcastically noting that people who got into Waseda/Keio through math-free entrance exams prove that “hensachi doesn’t matter.” On the other hand, many argued that pedigree is nothing more than an “entry ticket” for new-graduate hiring, and that evaluation after joining a company is a separate matter — so opinion on pedigree-first thinking is far from unanimous. Worth keeping in mind, since it’s easy to lose in the back-and-forth of replies: Waseda and Keio’s entrance exam formats vary by faculty in whether math is required, which means hensachi comparisons aren’t as simple as they first appear.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Geinosupo Sokuho+) thread “‘Reiwa no Tora’ President Hayashi tells exam-takers: ‘Saying pedigree or hensachi don’t matter is just lip service’ / ‘They only hire from Todai, Kyodai, Waseda, Keio lol’.”

  • FF7’s Finale Runs Out of Room on Switch 2 — Get Ready to Pay Extra for a Special SD Card

The Switch 2 version of the final chapter in the FF7 Remake trilogy has sparked discussion on the hardware/industry (“gehaban”) board, after users pointed out that with only 256GB of internal storage, players will need to buy an additional “microSD Express” card — a special format that regular microSD cards can’t be used with — just to fit the game. The first two entries, Remake and Rebirth, already total around 90GB combined, and the finale alone is said to take up another roughly 130GB, meaning keeping all three installed at once could cost anywhere from a few thousand yen to nearly 30,000 yen just in SD cards. Some pushed back in the thread with comments like “just delete it after you beat it” and “the PS5 version eats up just as much space,” so opinions were split on how big a problem this really is.

Somebody's working hard on that negative campaign
Well, I'll just be buying it on Switch 2 as normal though

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Switch 2 has 256GB of internal storage, and expansion is only supported through a dedicated microSD Express slot — the regular microSD cards used on previous Switch consoles won’t fit. SD Express itself is an industry-standard format set by the SD Association, not a proprietary Nintendo format, but compatible products are still low in supply and tend to carry a higher price tag. The prices cited in the thread — “around ¥9,000 for 256GB, around ¥29,000 for 512GB” — are rough real-world figures cited by thread participants, not an official guaranteed lowest price, so that should be kept in mind. There was also pushback along the lines of “just delete it after you finish it,” but that argument doesn’t really hold for users who want to play multiple titles in parallel, or who might want to go back and replay them later.

  • Kids’ ‘Puku Puku’ Stickers Skyrocket in Price — Did Only Resellers Cash In?

Kids flocked to variety stores for “Puku Puku” stickers, and for a while resale sites saw prices soar to many times the retail price. According to a Daily Shincho article, the boom has since cooled off, with some stores now offloading stock at “80% off” fire-sale prices. On 5ch’s Newsflash+ board, a discussion broke out between those who felt things had settled back into a calmer, genuinely kid-driven boom now that the resellers had moved on, and more cynical voices who suspected resellers had been artificially manufacturing the demand all along.

Now going for “80% off”: the current state of the sticker boom that had kids flooding variety stores and prices spiking on resale sites — with sighs that “only the resellers made money”

Maybe flea-market apps need a fair price cap set per item, kept separate from strict-procedure auctions like fine art.
Mercari, Yahoo Auctions, and the like are going to need regulation.

It starts with high schoolers and older teens first.

    That's worse than ordinary reselling.
Honestly, every Chiikawa restaurant collab ends in some scandal — maybe they should just stop doing them.

The pro-reseller crowd keeps saying it's good because it keeps the economy moving, but stuff keeps getting cancelled — it's not making anything better at all.
They need to regulate the system that makes reselling possible in the first place.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Reselling via flea-market apps has spread beyond game consoles and trading cards to even cheap children’s toys. In this case, opinions on the thread were split over whether the crowded stores and skyrocketing prices reflected genuine demand or were manufactured by resellers gaming supply and demand. Some pointed out that manufacturers can’t easily ramp up production because of the heavy burden of equipment investment costs, which complicates the simple claim that “manufacturers profit either way, even when resellers buy up stock.” There have also been repeated incidents involving popular character merchandise — such as the suspected under-the-counter sales during Kura Sushi’s Chiikawa collaboration — and this sticker boom can be seen as another example of the same pattern.

  • Komeo Shaves His Head to Apologize Over Crab Ramen Food Poisoning: ‘It Wasn’t Made in Advance’

Komeo, a chef with a background as a fighter, apologized on YouTube on September 5 over a food poisoning incident linked to the “chilled crab ramen” served at the Azabu-Juban Summer Festival in Tokyo on August 22–23. Appearing in a suit with his head freshly shaved, he said the route of the Salmonella infection has not yet been identified, and once again denied longstanding suspicions that ingredients had been “reused.” Reactions on 5ch were split: many dismissed the head-shaving itself as a meaningless gesture, arguing compensation and an explanation of the cooking process should come first, while others cautioned against piling on a young entrepreneur for taking a risk, and some questioned the responsibility of the festival’s organizing committee.

    September 5, 2026

Chef Komeo, who has competed in the one-minute fighting event “Breaking Down,” updated his YouTube channel on the 5th. He apologized for the food poisoning incident involving the “chilled crab ramen” served at the “Azabu-Juban Summer Festival” (August 22–23), while once again denying the “reused ingredients” allegations.

Komeo appeared with his head shaved, wearing a black suit and navy tie. Bowing deeply, he apologized: “To everyone who was affected, to your families, and to everyone involved — I am truly sorry for the tremendous pain and trouble this has caused.”

He said it hasn't yet been determined which food, or at what stage of preparation, the Salmonella came from, remarking, "Why this accident happened is exactly what I myself want to know most." He also noted that bacteria were detected in two employees, but explained, "the health center has not certified that those two were the source of infection for this 'shokuchuuryoku'" (a typo for shokuchudoku, i.e. "food poisoning," that appeared in his own statement).

So, is the Azabu-Juban Summer Festival organizing committee going to shave their heads too? The shop owner and head chef behind this mess has shown he's taking it seriously — now it's the festival organizers' turn. Don't treat it like someone else's problem, own it too.

I think the Azabu festival's organizing committee owes some kind of explanation too. They must have known chilled crab ramen was being sold at the stall. Makes you wonder whether they actually confirmed with Komeo's side that the ward had given permission.

Komeo doesn't go around saying he feels guilty just for being alive, and unlike certain other people, he's not off taking a bunch of overseas trips either.
    126AnonymousSep 5, 2026 21:12
To everyone piling on Komeo now that they've got the chance: don't crush a young talent who's fighting desperately hard for Japan. You should at least show some respect to someone who's clawed his way up from rock bottom, grinding himself down along the way. This habit of hammering down the nail that sticks out is exactly what's driving Japan's decline. Praise the fact that he's challenging himself before you criticize the failure. He's apologized — just accept it graciously.

    Re: #126
Someone who's genuinely fighting desperately hard — even if they want to serve original, creative dishes — knows that without solid fundamentals there's no real application, and that's true in any field. Normally you'd apprentice at a well-known ramen shop, learn the actual procedures and how to run a business, and then go independent.

Wearing a watch and bracelet covered in Salmonella — it's over. As dirty as a toilet, on par with a smartphone.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

In Japan, shaving one’s head at an apology press conference has long served as a symbolic gesture of “sincerity,” and whether that gesture actually means anything became the central point of debate on the thread. The press conference included technical explanations — that the route of the Salmonella infection has not been identified, and that although bacteria were detected in two employees they haven’t been confirmed as the source — but it did not touch on specifics like compensation amounts for victims or details of the crab ramen’s cooking and transport process. There was also no mention of whether the Azabu-Juban Summer Festival’s organizing committee had confirmed permits or what responsibility they bear, a point easy to overlook given that this apology was made solely by the vendor. Komeo is also a YouTuber known for competing on the fighting show “Breaking Down,” and his fame produced a split reaction: skepticism toward the apology on one hand, and sympathy for a young entrepreneur taking risks on the other.
