  • Chinese Visitor (18): “University of Tokyo Mock Exam Was Way Too Easy” — Sparks Academic Comparison Debate

An image apparently showing an 18-year-old Chinese visitor to Japan posting that a University of Tokyo (Todai) mock exam was “way too easy” was shared on the 5ch board “Nandemo Jikkyo G,” sparking a wave of discussion. In the thread, some posters shared firsthand accounts backing up the high academic level of China’s top students, while others pointed out that a mock-exam ranking alone only reflects strength in a few particular subjects. The debate spread to cover the gap between Tsinghua/Peking University and the University of Tokyo in the THE World University Rankings 2026, the cutoff line for making Japan’s Math Olympiad team, and the difference in Nobel Prize counts — with some even questioning Japan’s exam culture itself, saying it “puts the Todai entrance exam on too much of a pedestal.”

Basic point here — doesn't matter if it's China, South Korea, North Korea, Mongolia, or Bhutan.
If you're genuinely that country's top talent, the entrance exam for Todai or Stanford is going to be easy.

If he's serious competition in China and can score an A around the Beijing area, of course he'd get an A on a Todai mock exam.

    Re: #70
This guy isn't even top-tier though.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The “Todai mock exam” behind this story is a nationwide practice exam run by university prep schools, widely used as a benchmark for university entrance-exam difficulty. The World University Rankings (THE) cited in the thread use their own evaluation criteria, factoring in things like research citation counts and international outlook — the fact that Tsinghua and Peking University rank above the University of Tokyo is specific to this particular index, and rankings from other bodies like QS or ARWU can place the schools differently. On other measures, such as Nobel Prize counts, Japan comes out ahead, so which university comes out “on top” depends heavily on which yardstick you use. The thread’s discussion expanded from one person’s personal experience into a comparison of entire national education levels, but since mock-exam results depend heavily on a given test-taker’s strong subjects and the exam’s scope, it’s difficult to draw conclusions about an entire education system from a single case.

  • PS6 Could Slash Game Sizes by 85%? 150GB Games Down to 25GB

AMD’s “Neural Texture Compression” technology, expected to be built into the PS6, could reportedly cut game texture data by up to 85%. Do the math and a roughly 150GB title would shrink to around 25GB. While the thread showed some excitement about the technology itself, plenty of skepticism came up too, drawing on the experience of PS5’s launch-era promise of “zero load times,” which turned out to be limited in practice. There was also discussion about whether the processing happens in real time or during installation, since it’s easily confused with network-dependent streaming.

PS6 to cut game sizes by up to 85%? 150GB games could shrink to about 25GB

It’s been reported that the next-generation PlayStation 6 console may include hardware supporting AMD’s “Neural Texture Compression,” potentially cutting game data sizes significantly. Compression efficiency for high-resolution textures in particular is said to improve greatly, which could ease the storage capacity crunch that’s a problem with current games.

Images, video, and audio are usually already compressed at the format level — JPEG, MPEG, and so on — so compressing them further didn't do much

I mean, if it has to be PS5-backward-compatible, this tech can't be used with PS5 software, so it's not like the PS6 automatically becomes cheaper

If they cut the PS6's storage or memory below the PS5's, you'd only be able to install one or two big PS5 games, or things would stop running from lack of VRAM

Well, it's still an emerging technology, so if they're releasing the PS6 within 5 years, I personally think they shouldn't make the memory or storage just barely better than the PS5's

    Re: #97
"Streaming" here means loading and displaying the data you need in real time, rather than data pre-loaded into memory

It's not talking about cloud streaming

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Neural Texture Compression is an AI-driven texture compression technology reportedly developed first by NVIDIA, and AMD is said to be moving to include similar functionality in its next-generation GPUs. One easily misunderstood point is that this technology mainly targets still-image textures, and has little effect on data that’s already compressed, like video or audio. Also, as explained in the thread, the term “streaming” here doesn’t refer to network-based cloud communication — it refers to the process of loading and reconstructing needed data from local storage in real time, which is often confused with connection-dependent technology. It’s also worth noting that there’s been no official announcement about the PS6 itself yet, so this remains in the realm of reporting and speculation.

Actor Shingo Yanagisawa (64) appeared on TOKYO FM’s late-night program “TOKYO SPEAKEASY” on September 14, and during a conversation with fellow entertainer Kunikazu Katsumata, revealed that there’s a type of job he now refuses to take. The topic arose when he named the period drama “Tōyama no Kin-san” as one of the productions where he co-starred with a big-name veteran early in his career. On the 5ch thread, though, the discussion centered less on that revelation itself and more on nostalgia for Yanagisawa’s trademark impressions and signature bits like “Abayo” (his catchphrase farewell) and his “open reel” gag, along with stories about working alongside veteran actors like Tomisaburo Wakayama.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The source material for this article is a segment from TOKYO FM’s late-night program “TOKYO SPEAKEASY,” aired on the 14th, in which Shingo Yanagisawa revealed during a conversation with Kunikazu Katsumata that there’s a job he now refuses to take. The quoted excerpt names the period drama “Tōyama no Kin-san” as one of the productions where he co-starred with a big-name veteran early in his career, but exactly which job he’s turned down and why is left to the rest of the original article — it can’t be determined from the thread’s comments. What actually got the thread buzzing wasn’t the main topic but Yanagisawa’s signature material: his “open reel” bit, his radio-impression routine, stories about co-starring with veterans like Tomisaburo Wakayama and Tetsuo Ishitate, and his role in the NHK Taiga drama “Yae no Sakura” — mostly nostalgia for the comedic style and acting career he’s built over the years. A few comments did include unverified claims that Yanagisawa’s behavior had upset a specific individual, along with pushback against those claims, but since none of this could be confirmed, it has been left out of this article.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou Sports Express+) thread “[Entertainment] Shingo Yanagisawa Comes Clean About a Job He Won’t Do: “I Haven’t Appeared in That Since,” “I Realized It Just Wasn’t for Me”.”

  • Radio Host Ijuin Hikaru Slams Daisuke Hori’s Week-Long Livestream: ‘The World’s Turned Ugly’

Streamer Daisuke Hori, who bills himself as a “short sleeper,” has been running a continuous broadcast since September 9, streaming his daily life 24/7. Scenes where he appeared to be sleeping repeatedly became a hot topic, and during a bathing scene on September 15 he accidentally exposed his lower body on camera, forcing him to cut the stream and apologize. Commenting on the incident on his radio show, Ijuin Hikaru quipped, “He’d honestly be more entertaining if he just openly gave in and slept,” criticizing the “burn-baby-burn” style of entertainment and lamenting that “the world’s turned into an ugly place.” On 5ch, while some users agreed with the criticism, plenty of others pushed back, pointing out that “Ijuin himself pulled outrageous stunts back in the day” and “TV used to do the same kind of thing,” leading to a split in opinion.

Hori accidentally exposed himself during his week-long nonstop livestream, cutting the broadcast and apologizing

Since September 9, Hori has been livestreaming his daily life around the clock, with scenes where he appeared to be sleeping repeatedly making waves online. On the 15th, while about to take a bath during the stream, he accidentally exposed his lower body, cutting the broadcast and apologizing — continuing to stir up controversy on social media.

On his show, Ijuin said of Hori’s stream: “That guy who doesn’t sleep, the short sleeper — it’d honestly be funnier if he just straight-up konked out. Like, snoring away, and then going ‘no, I wasn’t asleep’ (laughs).”

Whoa, there's actually a thread about short sleepers going right now. Still don't know who this guy is, honestly haven't bothered to find out — it's just a fad, he'll be gone soon enough, so learning about him would just be useless trivia anyway lol

Is he really courting backlash on purpose? Feels more like he's just doing his best and this is about the level he's at.
    11AnonymousSep 15, 2026 22:44
'Infamy beats obscurity' — you don't even know that saying? It's been true forever, including in the entertainment world you came up in. Sure, things have gotten more extreme, but your generation looked just as extreme to the one before it.
    14AnonymousSep 15, 2026 22:46
Back in the day it was nothing but long hours, power harassment, and sexual harassment. People are just burning free time on something — now or then, it's not that different lol
    15AnonymousSep 15, 2026 22:46
If he's just doing this as 'I'm a genuine short sleeper, I've only slept 30 minutes a day for 17 years,' that's fine as entertainment — same vibe as the old Hiroshi Kawaguchi Exploration Team show (a classic Japanese program famous for its staged, over-the-top 'adventures'). The problem is that he's teaching it as a trainable skill and selling course materials for it — that's what's getting people to seriously fact-check him, so yeah, this reeks of manufactured controversy for clicks.
    17AnonymousSep 15, 2026 22:48
Yeah, there's definitely this trend where pissing people off is a win condition. Rile people up, draw the hate, and you go viral. That's not supposed to count as talent, but online you can actually make a living off it.
    19AnonymousSep 15, 2026 22:49
'Burn-baby-burn entertainment' — wait, is he talking about the 24-Hour TV charity telethon?
    20AnonymousSep 15, 2026 22:52
TV does pretty much the same thing though. They casually pull stunts that could get a talent killed, all for ratings.
    22AnonymousSep 15, 2026 22:54
Ijuin's not really in a position to talk though — a lot of his old segments only got a pass because it was radio. I guess now it's just that amateurs can easily pull off "Denpa Shonen"-style stunts (a legendary Japanese reality/prank show) that used to require a whole TV crew? There are probably a lot of people out there doing risky "journeys" like the comedy duo Sarugakusetsu did on that show.
    27AnonymousSep 15, 2026 22:57
Re: #22 Sarugakusetsu claimed they were 'hitchhiking' while actually taking flights for part of it. Though that's not really Sarugakusetsu's fault — that's on Denpa Shonen (the show's producers).

So in the end, after pushing this far, is he not going to have any lasting health effects?
    24AnonymousSep 15, 2026 22:55
Wait, isn't Ijuin himself supposed to be a short sleeper too?
    28AnonymousSep 15, 2026 23:00
It's just that the environment now lets amateurs stream easily with zero skill required. And 'if you've got no real charm, going extreme is the only way to stand out' — that hasn't changed from the past to now. Cheap example, but it's the same as women stripping to get attention.
    30AnonymousSep 15, 2026 23:02
Everyone piling on to watch some guy who lied about not sleeping and now can't back down — and a fair number of people finding that entertaining — is honestly pretty messed up. It's really just mobbing and mocking a nobody who would've never gotten this kind of attention before.
    31AnonymousSep 15, 2026 23:03
That whole thing gives off a vibe like there's some organization behind the scenes forcing the hype, so I haven't touched it at all. The whole vibe is just boring anyway.
    32AnonymousSep 15, 2026 23:04
I think it's fine if people just do fun stuff and organically get hyped up on their own, but the people who think they can deliberately manufacture trends online are the boring ones.

    34AnonymousSep 15, 2026 23:06

I honestly don't get why anyone watches this stuff in the first place.
    36AnonymousSep 15, 2026 23:07

Background and Key Points of This Story

Daisuke Hori is a self-proclaimed “short sleeper” who claims to get by on just 30 minutes of sleep a day, and since September 9 he has been running a continuous livestream broadcasting his daily life 24/7. On the thread, the main talking points have been the repeated scenes where he appeared to be sleeping during the stream, and the uproar over his accidental lower-body exposure during a bathing scene on September 15. Ijuin Hikaru’s comment was a sarcastic jab suggesting “it would honestly be funnier if he just openly slept instead of sticking to the no-sleep act,” framing it as his discomfort with this kind of “any publicity is good publicity” style of entertainment. Opinion on the thread split between those siding with the criticism and those pointing out coolly that “old TV wasn’t much different” and “Ijuin himself pulled outrageous stunts when he was young” — with some suggesting the critics might be the pot calling the kettle black. It’s also worth noting that while some posts flatly asserted that Hori’s “short-sleep training” methods and seminars are a scam, that’s purely speculation from 5ch users and has not been confirmed as fact.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “Ijuin Hikaru questions short sleeper Daisuke Hori’s “week-long livestream,” laments that ‘burn-baby-burn’ entertainment has made ‘the world an ugly place’.”

At the same time, cooler-headed posters pointed out that the discounted “Puratto Kodama” travel package can make even Green Car seats cheap, while others compared the trip to past solo-travel posts by fellow members and recalled her earlier comment about splitting meal costs with her family — sending the discussion off in several directions.

    Background and Key Points

The “Puratto Kodama” package mentioned in the thread is a discounted Shinkansen-plus-hotel bundle sold by JR Tokai Tours, and booking the Green Car through it can end up cheaper than even a standard reserved seat on the Nozomi. Because of that, a fair number of replies pushed back on the simplistic “Green Car equals big earner” assumption as jumping to conclusions. There’s no way to confirm whether a celebrity’s “solo trip” is truly solo, or where the money for lodging actually comes from, beyond what she herself shares — so most of the thread amounts to speculation with no factual backing. The fact that posters brought up other members who’ve posted similar solo-trip photos in the past also shows how this kind of post tends to stir up the same debate again and again.

  • Why Is Anime Overrun with Isekai Reincarnation Stories? Overseas Demand, Says 5ch — “Easy-to-Grasp Settings Sell Worldwide”

While isekai reincarnation stories keep multiplying in anime, why do some works that are popular domestically never get a sequel? Anime producer Yusuke Onuki explained in his book that late-night anime revenue is heavily propped up by the overseas streaming market — and it became a talking point. On 5ch, criticism that it’s “mass-produced, all the same content” ran alongside the observation that “the settings are easy to understand, so they cross language and cultural barriers and sell worldwide.” While understanding spread of the structural reality that domestic popularity alone doesn’t get a project greenlit, deep-seated likes and dislikes toward the genre itself were also aired.

    September 15, 2026, 7:00 AM

“Why is it always isekai reincarnation stories?” “Why do even domestically popular works not get animated?” — the answer isn’t in the works themselves, but in the industry’s structure. Anime today is planned amid a tangle of overseas streaming, social media, the music business, and merchandising, and it’s overseas markets in particular that prop up the revenue of late-night anime. This is drawn from “Anime Business: The Anime Literacy That Makes Manga, Novels, and Anime 100 Times More Interesting” (Sogo Horei Publishing) by Yusuke Onuki, president and CEO of Bushiroad Move Inc., who as an anime producer has worked on numerous titles — explaining the increasingly complex state of today’s anime business.

“Why doesn’t that anime get a second season?”

Most stories are isekai, people just don't say it outright — going to the past or future, reading people's minds,
that stuff doesn't happen in reality, and if it's not real then it's happening in a world other than reality.
Aliens, people from the future, none of that's real — anything that's not a pure autobiographical novel is isekai
Even Akutagawa's talking cat isn't possible, so isekai is just an extension of personification.

Did you even read the article? It's about overseas demand for isekai stuff.

    > People often say "not another isekai reincarnation story," but that's not simply due to the industry being lazy. It's because there's extremely high demand in overseas markets. Isekai reincarnation has an easy-to-grasp premise — a trait that makes it an excellent format for global markets, understandable across languages and cultures.
    79AnonymousSep 15, 2026 16:15

Isekai stuff will settle in as a permanent genre, same as "I'm overpowered" stories, hero stories, and harem stories. It's not just a passing fad. Reincarnation itself existed plenty in sci-fi even in eras before "isekai" was even a concept.

Feels like it's really the author's own wish showing through, honestly.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Under the production committee model used for late-night anime, licensing revenue from overseas streaming rights is a crucial funding source alongside domestic disc and streaming sales, and simultaneous overseas dubbing releases on platforms like Amazon Prime have been expanding in recent years. Because of this, “being popular domestically” and “getting animated or getting a sequel” don’t necessarily go hand in hand — factors like how easy a setting is to grasp and how easy it is to translate, which affect how sellable a work is overseas, influence greenlighting decisions. On the thread, opinions on the isekai reincarnation genre itself were split, with voices calling it “mass-produced and boring” clashing with the observation that it’s “an excellent format for the global market, understandable across languages and cultures.” It’s worth noting that the structural reason cited in the article — demand from overseas markets — tends to get overlooked in the back-and-forth of reactions, and easily gets reduced to a debate over personal readings like simple “escapism.”

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geisoku+) thread “Why is recent anime always “isekai reincarnation” stories? The reality that even good shows don’t get sequels, and “popular in Japan” alone isn’t enough to get animated.”

  • Hello! Project Unveils School-Uniform Costumes — 5ch: ‘Reirei Actually Pulled It Off’

A thread went up on 5ch’s Hello! Project board after a Hello! Project-affiliated group unveiled new costumes styled like school uniforms. The thread’s title, “Juice Juice Girls’ Academy,” is a pun on the group’s name — a wordplay style commonly used on this board. While the uniform-style outfits drew teasing comments like “What kind of hostess club is this?” and “I used to go to Shinjuku Girls’ Academy all the time,” there were also plenty of positive reactions toward individual members like Reirei and Yagi Shiori. Comparisons to the past costume styles of ℃-ute, Morning Musume, and Berryz Koubou also became a talking point, with some posts noting the contrast between a “matching” concept and an “individually optimized” one.

    Background and Talking Points

Beyond Hello! Project songs themselves, group introductions and new costume reveals are a frequent topic among fans. What stands out in this thread is how opinions split over the school-uniform-style costumes. As noted in post #108, ℃-ute and Morning Musume often went with a “matching” approach where every member wore an identical costume, whereas Berryz Koubou reportedly took an “individually optimized” approach, styling the look differently for each member — and which lineage this new costume follows has become a minor point of debate. Also, the thread title’s hiragana spelling of “juice juice” is a board-specific joke poking fun at the group’s name; taken out of context it might seem abrupt, but this kind of wordplay is common on this board. Note that posts amounting to baseless rumors about specific members were excluded from this roundup, and only officially confirmed information is covered here.

On a packed train you can't even touch your phone, so going without earphones is rough.

Background and key points of this story

Sugichan debuted in 1993 and made a comeback as a 53-year-old comedian on the strength of his catchphrase “Wild, right~.” This post wasn’t from a TV appearance — just a personal account of something he witnessed, shared on X. It’s worth noting that the tsk-ing passenger’s circumstances and the stumbling person’s actual condition are described purely from Sugichan’s own point of view, with no footage or third-party testimony available to verify what happened. On the thread, many agreed with the sentiment that “society as a whole has lost its capacity for patience,” but reactions weren’t uniform — comment #42, for instance, which pinned the blame on a specific gender, was immediately met with pushback calling it discriminatory. Contact and tsk-ing incidents on packed trains happen all the time, but the fact that they only go viral when relayed through a celebrity’s post is part of why this kind of story keeps resurfacing.

  • Man in Row Behind Claims Cheki Prize After Winning Seat Turns Out Empty at Satoyoshi Uta’s Birthday Event, Sparking Controversy

During a seat-raffle cheki (Polaroid photo) giveaway at Satoyoshi Uta’s birthday event, it was reported on 5ch that the winning seat number was actually empty, yet a middle-aged man sitting one row behind it accepted the prize instead. Some commenters have condemned this as fraud, while others suggest it may have simply been an honest mix-up about which seat was which, leaving opinions divided. Some posters also shared past experiences of similar confusion, such as mixing up the letters “J” and “K,” or rows “M” and “N,” and mistakenly believing they had won.

When it's read out loud, rows M and N get mixed up easily too — I once saw someone think they'd won because of that. Back then winners picked up their prize at the exit, so a staff member told them, 'The winner was row M, you're row N, so this isn't yours' — I just watched that go down out of the corner of my eye as I walked past.

Background and Key Issues in This Discussion

Seat-raffle cheki giveaways like this one are a common fixture not just at Hello! Project events but across the idol scene generally, and it’s not unusual for organizers to have no clear policy for what happens when the winning seat turns out empty. When winning numbers are read aloud or announced over a PA system, mix-ups involving similar-sounding labels — like “J” and “K,” or rows “M” and “N” — are easy to make, and posts #70 and #88 in the thread include firsthand accounts of similar confusion at past events. Opinions in the thread split between those warning that publicly branding someone a cheat on the spot is risky, and those arguing that the bystanders who silently watched it happen share the blame. Worth noting: aside from the man himself and event staff, there’s no way to confirm for certain whether this was a genuine seating mistake or a deliberate act. The debate also touched on a broader fandom question — whether to call something out in the moment versus posting about it afterward to avoid a confrontation.

    Broken pastime
Can't even call it a sport — it's a hobby where the pitcher alone gets to 'take out' (56 = internet slang for korosu, "kill," used to dodge word filters) anyone he doesn't like, as many times as he wants

Since we're the generation that grew up on that anime, isn't the player who just got hit basically 'Kakupuru' now?

Guess that's why it's called a 'death pitch' (死球, literally "death ball," the Japanese term for hit-by-pitch) — driving the other guy toward death and all

They should really get this place exorcised, this team is seriously cursed

Background and talking points on this topic

The practice of shielding an injured player with a blue tarp while carrying him off on a stretcher after a hit-by-pitch at Jingu Stadium is a protective measure for injured players that has become common in recent years — using a tarp doesn’t necessarily mean the injury is serious. Its main purpose is to protect the player’s privacy and prevent footage from spreading excessively, and until the severity is confirmed via a same-day press conference or official statement, anything more is just speculation. While many thread posters expressed concern for the player’s safety, there were also numerous comments noting the recurring hit-by-pitches and substitutions in Yakult games this season; however, posts asserting a definitive causal link to the team’s overall conduct lacked solid grounding and were left out of this article. Some comments also referenced a past incident involving an injured umpire, but since that is an unrelated event, content that could cause confusion between the two has been excluded.
