  • Nagoya’s “stand on both sides” escalator habit sparks reaction — 5ch: “It’s like ants caught in a death spiral”

A video posted on X showing passengers packed onto both sides of an escalator at Nagoya Station went viral on 5ch’s “Live News G” (Nandemo Jikkyou G) board. Apparently Nagoya even has a system where a buzzer sounds if it detects someone walking, and the video showed just how thoroughly the “stand on both sides” rule is enforced there — in contrast to Tokyo and Osaka, where the custom of leaving one side clear for walkers is deeply entrenched, sometimes producing lines dozens of meters long as people wait to pass. Saitama Prefecture was the first in Japan to encourage standing on both sides via an ordinance, but commenters noted it has had little real effect.

    54AnonymousSep 16, 2026 12:37
    Re: #52
Yeah, but it has no penalties, so it's meaningless

    Background and points of debate

The custom of leaving one side of the escalator open for walking is said to have spread through the Kanto and Kansai regions starting around the 1980s–90s, but escalator manufacturers have long urged riders to stand still on both sides, citing the risk of falls while walking. In 2021, Saitama Prefecture became the first in Japan to enact an ordinance requiring people not to walk on escalators, but it carries no penalties, and commenters on the thread pointed out its lack of real effect, saying “nobody bothered enforcing it, so it was pointless.” Even though Nagoya’s both-sides standing appears thoroughly established, as shown in the video, this seems to owe more to on-the-ground measures — like audio warnings from the station — than to any ordinance. Opinions in the thread were split between those praising the both-sides habit as a sign of “high public manners” and those defending the one-side-open custom as reasonable for people in a hurry. The discussion also veered into statistics about driving manners in Aichi Prefecture at one point, but since that’s unrelated to escalator use and included some weakly supported claims, it has not been included in this article.

  • NHK Chairman Bows in Apology for Firing Staffer Over Sexual Misconduct — and for On-Air Talent’s Abuse of Employee — Vows to Rethink Boozy ‘Dinner Parties’

At its regular press briefing on September 16, NHK revealed it had handed down the harshest possible penalty — dismissal — to a reporter in his twenties for sexually touching a colleague without consent. At the same briefing, Chairman Tatsuhiko Inoue bowed his head for about five seconds while remaining seated to apologize for a separate case disclosed last month, in which a staff member was driven to take leave or resign after suffering unwanted sexual abuse from a program’s on-air talent. The chairman said the two incidents should not be treated as isolated cases but as a reflection of problems across the organization as a whole, adding that while both involved dinner gatherings where alcohol was served, “this isn’t meant to condemn such gatherings themselves.” On 5channel, users questioned why the chairman apologized while seated and why the talent responsible in the harassment case still hasn’t been named.

NHK held its regular press conference on the 16th at its Tokyo headquarters. It announced that, effective the 9th of this month, it had issued its harshest penalty — dismissal — to a reporter in his twenties who engaged in unwanted sexual physical contact.

Chairman Tatsuhiko Inoue, present at the briefing, also apologized for the case disclosed at last month’s emergency press conference, in which a staff member was driven to take leave or resign after suffering unwanted sexual abuse at the hands of a program’s on-air talent. Citing damage to “viewers’ trust,” the chairman bowed his head for roughly five seconds while remaining seated.

Regarding both cases, he stated that they should not be viewed as “individual, isolated incidents” but rather prompt a reexamination of the organization as a whole. He also noted that since both cases involved gatherings where alcohol was consumed, “this isn’t meant to condemn dinner gatherings that involve drinking.”

    Re: #1
    There's no sexual assault here.

Setting the victim aside, if the perpetrator's name never comes out and there's no criminal complaint filed, then as far as anyone's concerned the incident never happened.

If it's just a private settlement between individuals, there's no obligation to announce it publicly anyway.

In other words, no sexual assault ever took place.

Background and Key Points of This Story

NHK is a network with a well-known history of alcohol-related scandals, dating back to the 2018 incident involving TOKIO’s Tatsuya Yamaguchi. This time, two separate cases — “a reporter dismissed for misconduct” and “a staffer sexually abused by an on-air talent” — were addressed at the same press conference, which led to some confusion on the forum thread about whether they were connected. NHK itself framed the two not as isolated incidents but as symptoms of a broader organizational problem, without disclosing the real names or exact relationship between the perpetrators and victims involved. The thread mainly split over two points: whether it was appropriate for the chairman to apologize while remaining seated for roughly five seconds, and frustration that the talent responsible in the harassment case still hasn’t been named. Some pointed out that, unlike commercial broadcasters, information rarely leaks out of NHK to the tabloid press. Meanwhile, the chairman’s comment that he wasn’t condemning “dinner gatherings involving alcohol” reads more like a nod toward preventing recurrence than a genuine effort to get to the root cause — and the briefing gave no real indication of what concrete measures, if any, will actually follow.

    One of Ancelotti's dark chapters

Background and key points of this discussion

James Rodríguez led Colombia to its first-ever World Cup quarterfinal at Brazil 2014, catapulting to stardom with 6 goals to win the tournament’s Golden Boot. He then moved from Monaco to Real Madrid, but was frozen out under manager Zinedine Zidane, and spent his later career drifting between European clubs such as Bayern Munich and Everton. The thread’s disagreement centered on how to view this “stagnation at club level” — nostalgia for his prime performances coexisted with criticism of his lack of defensive effort and his reputation for being difficult to manage. Note that the comment about the danger of “becoming a scapegoat” references the case of Andrés Escobar, who was shot and killed after returning home following an own goal at the 1994 World Cup — reflecting the unique pressure surrounding Colombian football. The many comments expressing surprise that he’s “still only 35,” twelve years on from the Brazil tournament, also speak to just how vivid the memory of his prime remains.

  • Tokyo’s New Houses Are Closing In on ¥100 Million — Welcome to the ‘Oku-Kodate’ Era

An article about how new-build detached houses in Tokyo’s 23 wards are increasingly averaging close to ¥100 million — dubbed “oku-kodate” (literally “hundred-million-yen houses”) — went viral on 5ch. It points to buyers who’ve given up on condos amid soaring prices, shifting instead to detached houses a bit further from the station. The thread split over whether this price surge will keep climbing or finally stall due to rising interest rates, with one camp pointing to rising land, materials, and labor costs, and the other stressing that higher rates cut into buyers’ borrowing power — both sides trading real-wage statistics and vacant-home projections as ammunition.

In urban areas where land prices keep climbing, people are rediscovering the appeal of detached houses — a bit further from the nearest station, but free from the hassle of close-quarters neighbors. The average price of a new-build detached house in Tokyo’s 23 wards is nearing ¥100 million, and homebuilders are increasingly focused on supplying what’s now called “oku-kodate,” the “hundred-million-yen house.”

In the real estate industry, a "narrow-lot house" means land of 15 tsubo or less — that's about 50 sqm
With a 90 sqm lot you wouldn't normally even build three stories, so calling 90 sqm "narrow" sounds like a rural mindset
Actually, even in the countryside, houses built for nuclear families are usually sized to fit on a 90 sqm lot anyway

    That completely ignores market forces.
Sure, costs get passed on to the price,
but bank rates are rising, so buyers' borrowing limits shrink.
That means fewer buyers, so prices are forced to come down.

Over the past three years (2023-2026),
regular full-time workers' wages have risen on the back of historic spring wage negotiation (shunto) hikes and regular raises,
by roughly several hundred thousand yen a year on average — about 3-5% (¥10,000-16,000) on a monthly basis

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications' "Family Income and Expenditure Survey" (2025 average), for households with two or more people including a working member, the averages are:

    Gross income: ¥653,901/month on average
(combining the household head's salary of roughly ¥470,000 and a spouse's part-time/dual-income earnings of roughly ¥110,000, etc.)

    Non-consumption spending: ¥121,493
(taxes, social insurance premiums, and other withheld amounts)

Disposable income (take-home pay): ¥532,408/month on average
(the actual amount free to spend)

Consumption spending (living costs): roughly ¥380,000-390,000
(food, housing, utilities, education, entertainment, etc.)

Surplus (savings potential): roughly ¥140,000-150,000/month on average (about 27-29% of take-home pay)
(goes toward savings, insurance premiums, stock/fund purchases, etc.)

This is a national average, so it includes small and mid-sized companies in rural areas, where a large share of workers are employed

Background and key points of this discussion

Debates over real estate prices tend to pit the conventional wisdom — “if rates rise, prices fall” — against the view that “land, materials, and labor costs are what’s really pushing prices up, separate from interest rates.” In reality, both forces are at work simultaneously: rising rates reduce buyers’ borrowing capacity and dampen demand, while rising construction costs push up the floor price on the supply side — so neither factor alone tells the whole story. On wages, there’s also room for confusion: nominal monthly pay keeps hitting record highs, while real wages (adjusted for inflation) have stayed negative for a long stretch — the same phrase “wages rose/fell” can refer to two different numbers. And the projection of 9 million vacant homes, or 1 in 3 by 2038, isn’t a direct sign that prices in popular central areas will fall — it mainly reflects a growing divide between city centers and rural or suburban areas.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Breaking News+) thread “‘Even hesitating makes detached houses more expensive’ — what is the popular ‘oku-kodate’ trend in the greater Tokyo area?“

  • Tekken’s Harada: “Japan’s Big Game Company Executives Don’t Play Prototypes or Finished Games”

Katsuhiro Harada, known for the Tekken series, said in an interview with VGC that he believes executives at major Japanese game companies “don’t play prototypes or finished games.” According to him, they attend meetings to discuss profit and loss and break-even points, but never actually touch game builds or give feedback on them — with the SNK Group being a clear exception. On 5ch, opinions split over how sweeping this claim was, with some saying a division of labor between management and creative staff is only natural, and others arguing that management decisions made without understanding the ground level are the reason for repeated failures.

Katsuhiro Harada suggested that executives at major Japanese game development companies “don’t play prototypes or finished versions” of the games their own companies make. He did, however, single out the SNK Group as a clear “exception” to this pattern.

In the VGC interview, Harada described the image he has of executives at major Japanese game developers. He explained that while they attend meetings to discuss profit and loss and break-even points, they never actually play the game builds themselves or give feedback on their content. The picture he paints is one where executives sit in on the numbers meetings but never touch the actual builds.

Harada then broadened the point to the upper management of the Japanese game industry as a whole, stating firmly, as his own view, that there’s no one there actually playing the games their companies make.

And honestly, even setting aside whether they play games or not, it's obvious that game development and running a company require completely different skill sets. Isn't it the job of the producers and dev team leadership to explain to management and investors what kind of game they want to make next, in order to secure budget and staff? And investigating why a game didn't sell is handled by separate departments — the ones that gather user feedback and complaints, and market research — which exist apart from management.
That said, if the dev team, producers, customer service, and market research staff are all a bunch of untrustworthy liars whose written reports can't be relied on, or a bunch of talkers-only that nobody trusts internally because you never know what they'll do the moment you look away — then sure, management would get worried and start dropping by more often to have their say.

    That's disrespectful to Harada.

Background and key points of this discussion

Harada has led the Tekken series as producer for many years, and it was only recently revealed this year that he’s moving to the SNK Group. This remark comes from a VGC interview, and what sparked pushback in the thread was that his subject wasn’t limited to “Bandai Namco” but broadened to “major Japanese game companies” in general. The debate split roughly into two camps. One took the practical view that it’s only natural for management to focus on profit and loss rather than actual gameplay, since that’s simply a division of labor. The other took the critical view that judging things by numbers alone, without understanding what’s happening on the ground, is exactly why companies keep getting withdrawal-or-continue decisions wrong. Both sides backed their arguments with real examples of executives who did play and make hands-on decisions, like Koei Tecmo’s Kou Shibusawa and Nintendo’s “Boss” Yamauchi. One thing readers can easily misunderstand is that this remark was made purely in Harada’s personal interview — he never actually named any specific companies himself.

  • Falcom’s ‘Trails’ Series Tops 10 Million Sales — 5ch: ‘The Moment It Ditched PlayStation, Numbers Jumped, LOL’

Nihon Falcom has announced that cumulative sales of its “Trails” series have surpassed 10 million units. That’s up from the 9 million mark reported a year earlier, and the growth over that period is widely attributed to the series’ expansion onto Switch and Steam. On 5ch’s hardware/industry (console wars) board, some welcomed this apparent break from the series’ longtime PlayStation-only focus, while others took a cooler view, calling 10 million “nothing special.” The thread also branched into whether newcomers can realistically jump into the series, and if so, where they should start.

The PS Store is strong for free-to-play titles and new releases, but older games barely move even on sale. No matter how cheap it gets, people who already bought it obviously won't buy again — meaning there just aren't new buyers.
    58AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:23
It's not really selling that much, is it?
That's a cumulative total across 14 titles including remakes, right?

    It's 16 titles over 22 years:
Sky 1-3 (Trails in the Sky FC/SC/the 3rd)
Zero and Azure (Trails from Zero / to Azure)
    Nayuta
    Cold Steel 1-4
    Reverie
    Daybreak 1-2
    Beyond the Horizon
    Sky remakes 1-2

I'm interested in Cold Steel, but the whole "you have to play the earlier series first" prerequisite is such a hassle that it makes me not want to touch the Trails series at all.

    Re: #70
You play Sky 1-3, then Trails from Zero, then clear Trails to Azure — only after that do you finally get to Cold Steel.
And tons of characters from the older games show up too: Rector in Cold Steel, for instance, actually first appeared in Sky the 3rd as a former student at Jenis Royal Academy.

Going from Daybreak to Daybreak III, that's down to about a quarter of the audience, isn't it?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The “10 million units” figure comes from Nihon Falcom’s own announcement of cumulative shipments and downloads, while the 9 million figure was from the previous year’s commemorative dividend tied to “Trails in the Sky the 1st.” The one-million-unit increase over that year is attributed not just to the PlayStation platforms the series has long relied on, but to its expanded rollout on Switch (2) and Steam. Where the thread split was over how to judge this apparent “PlayStation exodus”: some posters shared anecdotes that the games chart well during Steam sales but show little movement on the PlayStation Store. That said, the quote attributed to Falcom’s president and the age-demographic graph that got posted both lacked any clear sourcing — they weren’t official material, just posters’ memory or screenshots, so they should be taken with a grain of salt. Another point of debate was whether newcomers could jump in starting from something like “Trails of Cold Steel,” given how the series carries forward lore from earlier entries; posters compared it to long-running manga or historical dramas in arguing over whether it’s possible to “read partway through.” This isn’t really a question with a right answer — it’s best understood as simply a matter of personal taste that varies a lot from person to person.

  • Juice=Juice Unveils Tour Merch, Gets Roasted — 5ch: ‘Ugly Designs? Great, Saves Me Money’

On September 16, 2026, Juice=Juice unveiled the tour merchandise for “Room Tour 2026 5ROOMS.” The lineup included penlight accessories, T-shirts, towels, and acrylic stands, but the 5ch (Hello! Seriously, this. Neglecting stuff like this is exactly why younger fans don't stick around.

    Background and Key Points

Juice=Juice’s tour merchandise has long been criticized as “uncool” compared to other Hello! Project groups like Angerme, and this thread saw another wave of harsh reviews in that same vein. At the same time, the discussion wasn’t purely negative — some posters offered the ironic take that “ugly merch is a relief since it saves money,” while others raised genuine concern that the poor design quality may be discouraging younger fans from sticking around. Worth noting: the past-tour merch photos used for comparison came from posters within the thread itself, not from official sales or evaluation data.

  • Sony and Nintendo Use Different Accounting Standards — 5ch Reacts: ‘You Can’t Compare Numbers That Aren’t Comparable’

A thread on the gaming hardware/industry board (nicknamed “Geha”) pointed out differences in how Sony and Nintendo handle accounting in their earnings reports. The starting point was the observation that Nintendo excludes download-only titles from its sales tallies, while Sony effectively treats the PlayStation Store as a “retailer,” letting it book digital sales revenue as its own. Posters argued back and forth over whether this discrepancy makes Sony’s operating margin look better than it really is, with others countering that Nintendo’s operating profit in absolute terms still exceeds Sony’s regardless. The discussion also expanded into the apparent contradiction of studio closures and layoffs continuing even as earnings are reported as strong.

    Re: #1
But the operating profit figure itself doesn't change, so Nintendo is still coming out behind either way.

Sure, fine, but you'll at least admit that since the Switch launched, Sony has only beaten Nintendo on operating profit for the last year and a half — and was behind for most of that time?
    18AnonymousSep 16, 2026 14:24
This is one reason Sony wants to push digital downloads —

    Re: #154
    Unclear.
It'll probably be either counting sales only from the physical release onward, or retroactively counting the whole period.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Nintendo’s and Sony’s financial disclosures count game software sales differently. Nintendo publishes combined package-plus-download sales figures only for titles that also had a physical release, while titles that stayed digital-only throughout — like “Suika Game,” mentioned in the thread — have never been reflected in the officially published cumulative sales totals. Sony, meanwhile, uses an accounting treatment that handles the PlayStation Store as an effective sales channel rather than its own product, meaning digital sales of third-party titles can also be booked as Sony’s own revenue. The thread’s central debate was over how this structural difference makes comparing operating margins difficult, and how the term “digital ratio” gets thrown around without ever being clearly defined. Opinions were also split on how to interpret the continued studio closures and layoffs alongside reportedly strong earnings, pointing to an industry reality that can’t be summed up by a simple good-or-bad performance narrative.

It's not PC itself, it's the Steam integration that has a lot of bugs.
Even with Wild Hearts, it was specifically the Steam launch that caused problems.

The A-team's off making the Nioh DLC, so this is realistically the B-team — the young Wo Long crew, right?
A crappy Game Pass day-one release is basically just new hires getting experience, like an experimental side project.
Just play the PS5-exclusive Nioh for now, and pick this up once it's pocket change during the Xbox/Switch crowd's ("チカニシ," 5ch slang for Xbox and Nintendo fans) paid beta test lol

No, I just meant — did you actually play it and come away satisfied with the A-team's DLC?

    Re: #59
I'm waiting for it to drop to under half price or pocket change, so obviously I haven't played the DLC yet.

Fair enough — but next time, even if you haven't played it, you should at least look up reviews before posting.
    64AnonymousSep 16, 2026 12:56
If only it didn't have that tedious chore of capturing bases to lower enemy morale.

If you rush straight to the boss the difficulty spikes, and dying weakens your own character, so the grind gets tedious.

This game was a masterpiece right up until the devs went nerf-happy, so getting a fast start matters a ton with this one.
    102AnonymousSep 16, 2026 14:30
    Re: #78
I didn't mind the nerfs in general, but nerfing the jiggle physics into stiff-as-a-board? Unforgivable.
    83AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:54
But before the nerf, weren't there a lot of people who couldn't beat Zhang Liang?
I feel like that was a pretty big talking point.

Out of only two bosses in the entire game that have a second phase, why on earth would you put one of them right at the very start, lol
    94AnonymousSep 16, 2026 14:07
The combat was fun, but the weapon customization and collection elements felt way too thin.

    Re: #94
Huh? Go smash 1,000 terracotta warriors first before you say that.
The fun in this game is entirely the loot-grinding (hack-and-slash/ARPG loot loop).

    Background and Key Talking Points

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty was developed by Team Ninja, a studio under Koei Tecmo, and released in 2023 as a dark Three Kingdoms action RPG — a sister title in the same lineage as the Nioh series. It’s known for parry-focused combat and a world overrun by demonic yokai, and the fact that it was a day-one Xbox Game Pass release from launch is once again a talking point for this sequel. Opinions in the thread split mainly over two things: how the original game itself is remembered (with “it can’t top Nioh” and “it was genuinely fun” voices coexisting), and the base-capture-to-lower-morale progression system along with the repeated post-launch balance changes (nerfs). In particular, the early difficulty of the boss Zhang Liang keeps coming up across multiple posts as something people remember from the demo days. The original game also had login-related bugs reported on Steam in the past, so PC-version stability is once again one of the focal points this time around.

Active Player Speaks Out, Owner Confronted — Something’s Wrong with the Hiroshima Carp: The Zombie Cigarette Scandal Won’t Go Away, Players Say They “Distrust the Club”

    Weekly Bunshun Editorial Team

“In the zombie cigarette scandal, the players themselves have lost trust in how the club has handled things. The club may have thought it could ride this out, but because it didn’t respond properly, even players who had nothing to do with it ended up under suspicion.”

Probably because it's still just at the "allegation" stage.
If they went big on national broadcast over a mere allegation and it turned out wrong, they'd be facing a defamation lawsuit for sure.
If a player actually gets arrested, they'll surely report it then.

Mr. Matsuda is an elite — Hiroshima University Attached High School, then Keio University.

And on top of that, you get stuck paying the entire bill after losing some macho game of rock-paper-scissors. ("otokogi janken" — a hazing game where the loser foots the whole tab)

Background and Key Points of This Topic

“Zombie cigarettes” is the nickname for a drug-related scandal that surfaced in NPB this season; as of September it remains at the “allegation” stage, and there are no reports of any player facing criminal punishment. As pointed out in the thread, media coverage appears to be deliberately restrained, since prominently naming still-unconfirmed suspects would expose outlets to defamation risk. Meanwhile, the Carp has a history of punishing players from a past online-gambling scandal who failed to self-report, and some argued that this precedent created an atmosphere where the most suspicious players are the least likely to come forward. Opinions were split between those demanding accountability from the club and those worried about reputational damage to uninvolved players, with reactions varying depending on which concern people weighed more heavily.
