  • 5ch Users Debate Anime and Manga Characters’ ‘Intelligence Rankings’

On 5ch’s Nanademo Jikkyo G board, a thread went up featuring a homemade ranking of anime and manga characters by “intelligence.” Tier 4 (ranks 76-100) was defined as “localized tactics and narrowly specialized expertise,” Tier 3 (ranks 51-75) as “situational dominance and clutch performance,” and Tier 2 (ranks 26-50) as “world-class big-picture thinking and refined specialized reasoning,” with characters like Dr. Gero, Piccolo, Sōsuke Aizen, Osamu Dazai, Meruem, and Shogo Makishima making the list. Debate broke out over how fair the rankings were, including a reply pushing back on Dr. Gero’s placement by pointing to Bulma’s inventions, with opinions split on how to judge each character’s intelligence.

Tier 4 (Ranks 76-100): Localized Tactics, Narrowly Specialized Expertise, and Gag-Boosted Intelligence
These characters are world-class at localized mind games or specific skills, but land in the lower tier due to narrow general intelligence, heavy reliance on special abilities, or superintelligence played up for narrative effect (gags included).

    Background and Talking Points

This kind of “stat debate” is one of 5ch’s long-running genres. Unlike a plain strength argument, it stands out for trying to put hard-to-measure qualities like intelligence and strategic thinking into words using an original tier system. This poster, too, set up deduction criteria like “schemes that collapse under an ability-removed test” and “excessive after-the-fact reveals,” building the ranking with a pseudo-academic structure. That said, this excerpt only covers Tier 4 through Tier 2 (ranks 100 to 39) and doesn’t include the top 25, so it’s easy to mistakenly assume characters like Osamu Dazai and Meruem “didn’t make the top tier” — they simply aren’t shown here. It’s also worth keeping in mind that a ranking like this rests entirely on one person’s subjective criteria, and since there’s plenty of room to interpret a character’s canon settings and feats differently, it’s not unusual for the criteria themselves to be questioned, as with the pushback over Dr. Gero’s ranking.

  • Popular Gacha ‘Marker Accessories’ Pulled From Store Shelves — PR Dept: ‘To Ease Overcrowding’

Regarding Bandai’s popular capsule-toy line “Marker Accessories,” several outlets of the official store “Gashapon Bandai Official Shop” announced one after another on X in mid-September 2026 that they were halting or suspending sales. Bandai Namco Experience, which operates the stores, told reporters that the move was “to ease overcrowding,” but declined to comment on the specifics at individual stores. On 5ch, opinions flew from every angle — how the items are actually used (as umbrella markers or keychain substitutes), whether they’re being snapped up for resale, and whether this is simply picking up where the previously popular “sticker” gacha craze left off.

Regarding Bandai’s capsule-toy series “Marker Accessories,” cases popped up nationwide in mid-September 2026 of outlets of the specialty capsule-toy chain “Gashapon Bandai Official Shop” announcing on X that they were halting or suspending sales.

A PR representative for Bandai Namco Experience, which runs the stores, told reporters on September 15 that the reason was “to ease overcrowding,” and declined to comment on the details of individual cases.

    81AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:18
    Re: #72
A keychain has a metal ring so you can actually attach keys to it, but marker accessories are a small closed rubber loop, so they're not really made for holding keys.

    Background and Points of Debate

“Marker Accessories” is a series of small rubber-ring parts meant for marking umbrellas or bags, and it appears to have taken off once the previously popular “sticker”-style gacha boom cooled down. Since the plain rings themselves are available at 100-yen shops, the appeal is said to lie less in practical use and more in the collectible value of the character charms inside. Bandai Namco Experience’s PR department gave only “to ease overcrowding” as the reason for the sales suspensions, without addressing the specifics at individual stores. That left thread posters split over whether the lines were mainly driven by resellers or simply a genuine collecting boom, and whether reselling a mass-producible item could even turn a profit in the first place. Though not mentioned in the article, suspensions of popular capsule-toy items have happened repeatedly in recent years, and stores withholding the specific reasons is nothing unusual.

  • New Fire Emblem ‘Bansenkou’ Launches Tomorrow — 5ch’s Console-War Board Erupts Over Metascore Predictions

With Nintendo’s new simulation RPG “Fire Emblem: Bansenkou” about to launch, predictions about its Metascore were heating up on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry board (aka “Geha”). No official score has been posted yet, but posters kept measuring it against the PS5-exclusive “Marvel’s Wolverine,” which holds a Metascore of 77. That's rough. Not acceptable for a game with a budget in the tens of billions of yen.

    Background and Key Points

The term “NBP,” which shows up constantly in the thread, is internet slang — a sarcastic coinage implying that Nintendo titles tend to get review scores higher than their content deserves. It’s not an official scoring standard or any real system. The comparison title, “Marvel’s Wolverine,” is a PS5 exclusive with a Metacritic score of 77. Online discussion of game reviews often carries persistent suspicion toward developers’ conduct and reviewers’ standards, rather than focusing on the games themselves, and unverified rumors tend to take on a life of their own in these spaces. This thread, too, is a back-and-forth of hope and anxiety ahead of any official score announcement, and the actual reception after launch may well turn out differently from what’s being predicted here.

  • Cabinet Approves Cutting Food Consumption Tax to 1% — Supermarkets Exhausted by Re-Pricing 15,000 Items

On September 15, the cabinet approved a tax reform outline that will cut the consumption tax on food from 8% to 1% for two years starting next April. The move fulfills a tax-cut pledge Prime Minister Takaichi made during the lower house election six months ago, and covers all food items except alcohol and dining out. While there’s hope the cut will ease household budgets amid ongoing price hikes, supermarkets and other retailers face the burden of updating price tags and register tax settings for roughly 15,000 items. Commenters on the thread were split: some said price increases outweigh the tax cut so they won’t really feel it, while others welcomed having more money to spend on things like eating out. Some also worried about the confusion when the rate reverts in two years.

On the 15th, the cabinet approved a tax reform outline to cut the consumption tax on food from 8% to 1% starting next spring. It has been just over six months since Prime Minister Takaichi campaigned on “tax cuts” in the February lower house election. With rising prices squeezing household budgets, many are hoping for relief, though some worry about the impact of reverting to 8% two years later. Restaurants and other businesses concerned about revenue losses from the tax cut are calling for more robust relief measures.

If this is just going to cause a fuss over subsidies and cost time and money, why not just keep it flat at 8% for everything?
The gap between a food-only cut and a flat 8% is only about 3 trillion yen, but factoring in total costs, a flat rate would actually be quicker and easier to implement
It'd also help boost spending beyond just food

Background and Key Points of This Story

The measure to cut the consumption tax on food — which already falls under the reduced tax rate — from 8% to 1% for a two-year period starting next April was approved by the cabinet in the September 15 tax reform outline. It covers all food items except alcohol and dining out, and supermarkets and other retailers will need to update price tags and POS system tax settings all at once, a burden that became a major talking point in the thread. Some commenters speculated that the April start date was timed to align with the unified local elections, but this is speculation, not an official explanation. Since the system is designed to revert to 8% after two years, how the government handles the tax hike or a possible extension when that deadline arrives will be the next thing to watch. In the thread, some argued that price increases outweigh the size of the tax cut, making it hard to feel any real benefit, while others pointed out that some households will see a meaningful change in absolute spending — how much the effect is felt seemed to depend on the size of a household’s food budget. It’s also worth noting that the “more money for eating out” comment referenced in the original headline was just one reaction among many, not a universal sentiment.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (News Speed+) thread “A woman who couldn’t afford beef says a 1% consumption tax means she can finally “afford the dining out she’d been holding back on”… supermarkets re-pricing 15,000 items say “employees are exhausted”.”

  • PS5-Exclusive Wolverine’s ‘2 Million in Week One’ Claim Sparks Doubts — 5ch: ‘Isn’t This Just AI-Generated?’

An image circulating on social media claiming that PS5-exclusive title Marvel’s Wolverine topped 2 million units sold in its first week set off a firestorm on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry board (nicknamed “Geha”). What began as ammunition for mocking Switch fans quickly spiraled into a fight over whether the number was even real, as posters pointed out that neither Insomniac nor Sony had made any such announcement and speculated the image itself might be AI-generated. With the game’s development budget reportedly topping 30 billion yen, there was also keen interest in whether it could actually turn a profit.

According to a leak from Insomniac, if Wolverine doesn't sell 6 million copies in its first 12 months, Marvel may end its long-running partnership with Insomniac and scrap the planned X-Men game.

I think 6 million is achievable. If sales fall short, they'll probably push the game with steep discounts. But with the leaked development budget reportedly at $305 million, even 6 million feels low. The game might need to sell 8-10 million copies before it starts turning a profit. That seems like a stretch.

    Background and Points of Contention

On the Hardware/Industry board (“Geha”), comparisons of “first-week sales” routinely spark fights, since the counting method — shipped vs. sold-through, digital included or not — can differ, which often makes the reliability of the numbers themselves the real battleground. Marvel’s Wolverine, the title at the center of this dispute, is reportedly a massive production with a development budget exceeding 30 billion yen, and the thread also cited a leak claiming Marvel could end its partnership with Insomniac and cancel a planned X-Men game if Wolverine fails to sell 6 million copies within 12 months — a detail that only sharpened interest in the sales figures given how high the breakeven point appears to be. Meanwhile, the “2 million in the first week” image that started it all has not been confirmed by any official statement from Insomniac or Sony, and several posters raised suspicions that it may have been fabricated with generative AI. An image of unverified authenticity taking on a life of its own on social media, with discussion running ahead of it as if it were established fact, is a pattern that shows up again and again in online chatter about game sales figures.

*This article is compiled as an excerpt/summary of the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (“Geha”)) thread “[Bad News for Nintendo Piggies] Wolverine Breaks 2 Million in First Week!!“.

  • New Wolverine Game Accused of Being a ‘Smear Campaign’ Target — 5ch: ‘This Is What Happens When Conspiracy Thinking Goes Too Far’

Following the release of the new Marvel game “Wolverine,” review scores from major gaming outlets came in low across the board, prompting gaming influencer “Pokaos” to claim on X (formerly Twitter) that “the game may have been review-bombed in a smear campaign by legacy media outlets” — sparking discussion on 5ch’s console-war board. While some pointed to IGN’s score of 60 as evidence, other posters who’d actually played the game pushed back, saying things like “it’s more fun than I expected” and “I’ve got no complaints about the Metacritic score of 77.” Rather than debating the game itself, the thread mostly argued over Pokaos’s credibility, given his track record of alternately praising and bashing Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft — opinions split between those questioning his motives and those defending him.

Once you actually play it, it stops bothering you. The story explains that it's Wolverine's sense of smell being visualized, and the tracking line doesn't even show up on every stage. The people making noise about this clearly aren't gamers who've actually played it — they're something else entirely, just watching videos and criticizing.

Nah, you die constantly in this game — you can even die just from falling off a cliff. Enemy guns hit hard, and about 10 enemies show up at once, so if you don't properly use stealth like in Ghost of Tsushima, you'll get sniped to death over and over.

Exactly. He's mostly playing on PS5 anyway.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Underlying this story is a tension familiar to the gaming industry: the gap between review scores published by major outlets (aggregated on sites like Metacritic) and how a game actually feels to the people who’ve bought it. The thread cites specific numbers — a Metacritic score of 77, an IGN score of 60 — showing that critics themselves are divided. At the same time, the term “review-bombing” technically refers to an organized effort by a specific group to deliberately tank a score, but no such evidence was presented in this thread; it remains purely one influencer’s personal speculation. As is typical for 5ch’s console-war board, discussion drifted away from the game’s actual quality and toward “which platform is this guy shilling for,” with much of the back-and-forth centered on whether Pokaos’s claims lined up with his past statements. What readers may easily miss is that the thread’s energy was really about the reviewer’s credibility rather than the game’s quality — the game’s actual merits were left unresolved.

  • Yasuei Yakushiji Found Guilty of Forging Adoption Papers — 5ch: ‘He Beat Tatsuyoshi in the Ring, but Lost the Bigger Fight in Life’

Former professional boxing world champion Yasuei Yakushiji (58) has been found guilty of forging adoption registration papers with his 29-year-old girlfriend. Following the ruling at Nagoya District Court, the 5ch Entertainment & Sports Express+ thread lit up with reactions from the generation that remembers his fierce battles with Joichiro Tatsuyoshi. Many posters speculated about why he chose adoption as his method, tying it to his assets and an ongoing divorce, while others reminisced about his glory days in the ring or questioned whether the sentence was too lenient — reactions across the thread were far from uniform.

He might be the adoptive father himself, but he can't just stamp the adoptive mother's — his wife's — seal without her okay.

Background and Key Points of Discussion

Yasuei Yakushiji is a former world champion remembered for his brutal 1990s battles with Joichiro Tatsuyoshi, and this case centers on the forgery of an adoption registration involving his girlfriend — a matter tangled up with assets and inheritance. Thread opinion split mainly over whether he dreamed up the scheme himself or had help from people around him, alongside frustration that the sentence seemed too lenient. At the same time, plenty of posts nostalgically recalled his prime fighting days, and many echoed the comparison to Tatsuyoshi that “he won the match but lost at life.” Note that the source article only confirms that a guilty verdict was handed down — it does not specify whether the sentence includes actual prison time or is suspended, nor the specific circumstances behind the forgery. The thread’s speculation about motives or any mastermind is just that: speculation, and shouldn’t be mistaken for confirmed details of the ruling.

  • Kobe and Awaji Island Join the Michelin Guide — 5ch Reignites the ‘Nothing Good to Eat in Nara’ Debate

Kobe and Awaji Island have been newly added to the areas covered by the “Michelin Guide.” They become the fifth region covered, following Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Nara, which are already included in the anonymous-inspection rating guide published by the French tire maker. On 5ch, the discussion drifted away from the actual Kobe/Awaji ratings and toward a long-running debate over the old saying “there’s nothing good to eat in Nara,” comparisons of star counts between Tokyo and Kansai, and the historical ties between Awaji Island and Tokushima.

“Kobe and Awaji Island” will be added to the coverage area of the “Michelin Guide,” the world-famous guidebook that rates restaurants and other establishments with stars.

The “Michelin Guide,” published by a French-headquartered tire maker that features roughly 17,000 restaurants and hotels worldwide, already covers “Tokyo,” “Kyoto,” “Osaka,” and “Nara” in Japan.

The star ratings take into account the quality of ingredients, the level of cooking technique, the polish and originality of the seasoning, and the overall consistency of the cuisine, with anonymous inspectors visiting and dining at restaurants to evaluate ingredient quality, technique, and more.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The “Michelin Guide” is a rating system published by a French tire company using anonymous inspectors, and with Kobe and Awaji Island now added, it becomes the fifth region covered in Japan, following Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Nara. Some in the thread pushed back with “why does a foreign tire company get to rate Japanese food,” though others pointed out that most inspectors for the Japan guide are actually Japanese, with the French company being only the parent organization. Much of the discussion focused less on the actual Kobe/Awaji ratings and more on the old saying “there’s nothing good to eat in Nara.” That phrase traces back to a line written by the Taisho-era novelist Shiga Naoya in an essay, and isn’t a reflection of Nara’s current food scene. There was also talk of how Awaji Island was historically part of the Tokushima domain during the Edo period, with some arguing that geographically it has stronger ties to Shikoku and the Kansai region than to Hyogo. On star counts, Tokyo is said to outnumber Kyoto and Osaka combined, fueling further debate over how the regions stack up.

  • Is It Pathetic to Live in a Tiny Studio “At Your Age”? 5channers Debate Housing—The Real Issue Is Cleaning Effort, Not Square Footage

A thread on 5ch’s Nanidemo Jikkyo G board asked whether it’s pathetic to be living in a 1K or studio apartment “at your age.” While some posters pushed back, arguing that “being single is the pathetic part—living in a 1K is still better than being a parasite still living with your parents (a ‘kodo-oji,’ slang for an adult man still mooching off his parents),” the discussion soon turned into an exchange of concrete housing details: a dilemma over choosing between a 1K at ¥30,000 and a 2K at ¥32,000 rent, a report of living in a 25-tatami-mat studio, and worries about eviction risk from a future rebuild while paying just ¥20,000 for a 1K. The view that cleaning effort matters more than room size also gained support.

Cockroaches don't even show up here. In rentals they show up constantly no matter how clean you keep your own room—you clearly haven't lived it (classic 'armchair expert' talk).

That's helpful. I wouldn't call myself a minimalist, but I'm close to it—aside from kitchen stuff, all I've got is a bed and a PC desk. I ditched my TV when I moved and never bought a new one.

    Re: #100
    What concept is that exactly?

For reference, here's what ChatGPT said:

At Columbia University's undergraduate programs (the College, etc.), there's no system like Japanese universities have for announcing results by exam ranking (1st place, top of the class). American college admissions (holistic admissions) decide acceptance by comprehensively reviewing high school GPA, standardized test scores (or test-optional), essays, extracurricular activities, letters of recommendation, and more.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Mocking “1K/studio apartment living” is a perennial topic on 5ch, and this thread was no exception, turning into a debate less about square footage and more about life stage and values—comparisons with living at home with one’s parents (kodo-oji), and judgments about being single itself. A notable feature was the number of concrete, practical exchanges: a real dilemma over choosing between a 1K and a 2K in the ¥30,000 range (reply #25), a report of living in a 25-tatami-mat studio, and warnings about the risk of eviction for a rebuild when paying just ¥20,000 rent for a 1K. Opinions in the thread split along two main lines—”judge by cleaning effort rather than room size” versus “what matters most is being financially independent”—suggesting that a small room doesn’t automatically equal a pathetic life. Note that the boasts about family wealth and the story about admission to an overseas university that appear partway through the thread are exaggerations/jokes and shouldn’t be taken as fact.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Nanidemo Jikkyo G) thread “Guys living in a 1K or studio apartment at their age lolllllllllllllllllllllllll.”

  • Is the harsh criticism of ‘GQuuuuuuX’ fair? 5ch splits down the middle

A thread titled “Was it really bad enough to get this much hate?” popped up on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G board over Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX. Some posters praised the return of Amuro and Char, while others pointed to the abruptness of heroine Machu’s emotional arc, questioned the point of setting the story in a parallel world, and argued that the late-game “high-stakes mobile suit battle” arc was unnecessary. A few defended the show by citing rising overseas Gunpla sales, sparking a broader debate over how to separate a work’s quality from its commercial success.

We got Amuro, Char, and Lalah all together, plus "Beyond the Time" going off — that was hype.

    Re: #111
Also, apparently Mercury wanted to lean even harder into the yuri stuff, so now there's a real-life school-life spinoff…

    Background and points of debate

Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX is a 2025 entry in the Universal Century Gundam franchise directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki. Set in a parallel world following the events of Char’s Counterattack, it brings back original-series characters like Amuro and Char. In the thread, opinion split between critics who, comparing it to Witch from Mercury and Iron-Blooded Orphans, argued that the director’s and writers’ personal styles were too heavy-handed, and defenders who simply enjoyed the hype of seeing Amuro and Char return. The sharpest disagreement centered on heroine Machu’s emotional portrayal and whether the second-half “high-stakes mobile suit battle” arc was necessary. Some also pointed to rising overseas Gunpla sales as evidence the show was a “success,” though others pushed back on whether that has any bearing on the show’s actual quality — worth noting the discussion drifted somewhat off-topic at points.
