  • Shuri Castle Main Hall’s Lacquer Work Complete: Its Brilliant Red Glow Returns

On September 17, 2026, it was reported that all lacquering work on the exterior walls and interior of Shuri Castle’s main hall — part of its reconstruction following the 2019 fire — has been completed. With the building’s brilliant red exterior restored, the craftsmen involved shared their heartfelt reflections. Following the report, 5ch’s News Express+ board saw a flurry of comments pointing out that Shuri Castle’s “original” color may not have been red at all, but black. Alongside this, posters also revisited doubts about the cause of the 2019 fire, speculated about the blaze reportedly caused by a sparking extension cord, and voiced concern over the scarcity of the timber needed for reconstruction.

The original color is actually unknown (the excavated gray roof tiles changed color over time, so their true original hue can't be determined).
After that it apparently turned red once, then faded to gray. It became black when the site was rebuilt as Okinawa Shrine.

They'll probably tighten up usage rules, starting with banning power strips —
even with some fire-resistant materials used, they'll likely ban open flames and unauthorized electrical appliances entirely in the lacquered hall.
Electrical wiring and any AC installation ought to go through design review as strict as a passenger aircraft's, or something's wrong.

    Re: #46
    It wasn't an electrical short.
A 1000W halogen lamp was plugged into a thin extension cord, which overheated and caught fire.
If it had been a short circuit, the upstream earth-leakage breaker would have tripped, but improper cord usage like this can't be detected at the breaker (the temperature there never rises high enough to trigger the protection device).

Management was entrusted to the Churaumi Foundation even back when it was under national government control, though.

Background and key points of this discussion

Shuri Castle’s main hall burned to the ground in a fire in the early hours of October 31, 2019, and the investigation ended without the cause ever being officially identified. There are reports pointing to an extension cord as the source of the fire, but officially it has long been listed as “unknown” — and it’s worth noting that the specific theories floated in the thread naming particular individuals or groups as responsible remain unverified rumors at best. As for the hall’s color, while some records indicate it was originally vermilion when first built, there is also a documented history of repeated repainting across different eras, making it a more complicated story than a simple “red or black” debate. Reconstruction costs and management are shared between the national government and Okinawa Prefecture, and the growing difficulty of sourcing the large-diameter timber needed for rebuilding is a genuine, industry-recognized challenge — so the concerns raised in the thread about a timber shortage aren’t off base either.

  • Tokyo to Fine Litterbugs at Tourist Spots — Ordinance Targeted for FY2028

Tokyo has finalized plans to ban littering in tourist areas and entertainment districts, with an ordinance set to take effect in fiscal 2028 that would fine violators several thousand yen on the spot. According to the Yomiuri Shimbun, 11 prefectures nationwide already have ordinances with penalty clauses, but almost none have ever actually imposed a fine — so Tokyo reportedly aims to make its rule stick by using lodging-tax revenue to help pay for patrol staff, among other measures. On the forum thread, opinions split over whether to install more trash cans or keep removing them as before, and posters also traded figures debating the economic impact of inbound tourism.

Tokyo Aims for FY2028 Ordinance Banning Littering in Tourist Areas and Entertainment Districts — Proposal Would Fine Violators Several Thousand Yen : Yomiuri Shimbun

Tokyo Metropolitan Government has finalized plans to enact an ordinance banning littering in tourist areas and entertainment districts. It is considering, as its main proposal, collecting an on-the-spot fine of roughly several thousand yen from violators, aiming for the ordinance to take effect in fiscal 2028.

A Yomiuri Shimbun survey found that 11 prefectures have established ordinances with penalty clauses, but none has ever actually imposed a fine or penalty — Okinawa Prefecture, for instance, said the rule is meant to have a “deterrent effect” rather than be enforced. To ensure its own rule is actually effective, Tokyo is also considering using lodging tax revenue collected from visitors to Japan to help fund the salaries of patrol and monitoring staff.

The result is rigged to make the tourism industry's economic scale look huge while every individual manufacturing sector looks small by comparison.

If you actually broke it down carefully, the drop might just be because Japanese people stopped littering — not the foreigners.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

According to Yomiuri Shimbun reporting, 11 prefectures nationwide have littering ordinances with penalty clauses, but none is said to have ever actually imposed a fine or penalty. Shibuya Ward began collecting its own 2,000-yen fine this past June, and while foreigners made up a quarter of those fined, the ward has reported that litter has visibly decreased as a result. Building on this precedent, Tokyo is considering, as its main proposal, using lodging tax revenue collected from visitors to fund patrol staff salaries. On the forum thread, opinions were split between adding more trash cans versus sticking with the current scarcity of bins and relying on penalties instead. There were also posts comparing inbound tourism spending’s share of GDP against manufacturing export figures, but it’s worth noting these numbers are just claims made on an anonymous message board — their sources and calculation methods couldn’t be verified within the article.

A thread posted to 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” (a general live-discussion board) tells the story of a husband who got publicly “exposed” by his wife for nothing more than inviting her to have sex. The thread grew into a wider debate about the lack of communication in marriage and what married life should really look like. Commenters offered concrete avoidance tactics — like “I wish he’d pretend to go along with it, then just sleep downstairs” — while others argued the real problem wasn’t the sex itself but everyday housework and conversation. When someone posted an image comparing the pros and cons of marriage, the discussion expanded into a debate over whether marriage itself is even worth it.

    Background and Talking Points

Stories like this — a spouse’s words getting publicly “exposed” on social media — come up regularly on 5ch, but whether it’s appropriate to publicize private exchanges, even with names redacted, is debated every time. As commenter No. 13 pointed out, there’s actually no clear legal line for how publicizing something as personal as a sexual invitation would be treated. In this thread too, opinions split between sympathy for the exposed husband and pushback along the lines of “well, of course he got exposed — he’s clearly not pulling his weight with housework and conversation.” It wasn’t a simple case of one side being right. The debate then broadened further after someone posted an image comparing the pros and cons of marriage, shifting the conversation from the invitation itself to whether marriage makes economic sense as a life choice at all.

Guess doing too many extravagant weddings really does take a toll on the body after all.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Remission” is a term originally used mainly for chronic conditions like cancer, leukemia, and rheumatoid arthritis — it describes a state where symptoms have subsided without the condition being fully cured, meaning a relapse remains possible. Some users felt it was an odd word choice for a herniated disc, and the thread ended up debating whether the term was even appropriate. While some cases of herniated discs and spinal stenosis do improve with surgery, others are left with lingering aftereffects, or naturally improve through conservative treatment instead — in practice, treatment approaches vary depending on symptoms and how advanced the condition is. Commenters also noted that former ballet dancers and people in jobs requiring frequent high heel wear tend to develop an arched lower back, which lines up with a well-known medical tendency for lower-back strain to build up over time.

  • New Crayon Shin-chan Episode Scripted by Dow 90000’s Sho Hasumi — Shinnosuke Barely Appears

An episode of TV Asahi’s “Crayon Shin-chan,” airing September 19, has become a hot topic: “It’s an Afternoon with the Nohara Couple,” the first episode scripted by Sho Hasumi, who leads the theater unit Dow 90000. Made as a collaboration with the variety show “Buzzman TV,” the episode barely features protagonist Shinnosuke, instead taking the bold approach of depicting a single continuous-cut conversation piece between his parents, Misae and Hiroshi. On 5channel, reactions were mixed: some compared it to a similar experiment Koki Mitani did for Fuji TV’s “Sazae-san,” others argued that without Shinnosuke it’s essentially a spin-off, and opinions split over whether Hasumi’s directorial sensibility suits the show.

An episode of the hit anime "Crayon Shin-chan" titled "It's an Afternoon with the Nohara Couple," scripted by Sho Hasumi — who leads the theatrical comedy unit Dow 90000 — will air on TV Asahi at 4:30 PM on September 19. Made as a tie-in with the TV Asahi variety show "Buzzman TV," it marks Hasumi's first time writing a script for "Crayon Shin-chan." Protagonist Shinnosuke Nohara barely appears; instead the episode centers on a conversation piece between his mother Misae and father Hiroshi. At the anime team's suggestion, they went with the bold approach of shooting the Nohara couple's everyday life — and a new side of them — in a single continuous cut.

    Background and Points of Debate

Episodes of “Crayon Shin-chan” told from a perspective other than Shinnosuke’s have appeared before, in both the manga and the anime, and it isn’t unheard of for a notable outside creator to write an episode of a long-running series. Commenters in the thread pointed to precedents — Koki Mitani’s similar experiment for a Fuji TV “Sazae-san” special, and Natsuhiko Kyogoku’s past work writing a script for “GeGeGe no Kitaro” — confirming that bringing in an outside creator isn’t unprecedented here. Where opinion split was over whether an episode where the protagonist barely appears counts as a “de facto spin-off,” and whether Hasumi’s directorial style actually suits Crayon Shin-chan’s brand of comedy — questions that, ahead of the broadcast, remain speculative on both sides. In compiling this article, a link to an unrelated incident report that had gotten mixed into the thread was excluded.

It's just unusual that Juice=Juice nailed it on the first try — Hello! Project never settling on which group to push is business as usual.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Both “Ash to Diamond” (Juice=Juice) and “RED LINE” (ANGERME) are Hello! Project songs released in 2026, and both share the same pattern: a post praising their MV on X kicked off a rise in view counts. What split the thread was a single question — is this coincidental, fan-driven spread, or organized promotion (so-called stealth marketing) involving the agency or an outside contractor? Grounds cited for suspecting the latter include view counts spiking specifically during late-night hours, and the fact that identical wording used to praise one group’s MV was recycled for another’s — but both points remain speculation on an anonymous forum, and neither the agency nor the distributor has acknowledged any involvement. It’s also worth noting that Juice=Juice producing results without a single member leaving in roughly two and a half years is being framed as a contrast with other groups that cycle through graduations and new additions — but that, too, is only one factor behind sales and view counts, not conclusive proof of superiority.

※This article is compiled as excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “The person who started saying ‘Ash to Diamond is great’ on X is now saying ‘ANGERME’s RED LINE is great’ — is Hello! Project being played around with?.”

  • Wolverine’s Contract Could Be Terminated If It Misses 6 Million Sales — 5ch: “That’s Asking Too Much”

Insomniac Games’ latest title, Marvel’s Wolverine, has launched on PS5. According to contract documents leaked in the 2023 cyberattack on the studio, Sony and Marvel reportedly agreed to a clause allowing either party to terminate their deal if none of three flagship titles covered by the contract sells 6 million combined PS5 and PC units within a year of release. On 5ch’s hardware board, opinions split over whether that sales target is realistic in today’s market, and whether Sony might just pad the numbers through free giveaways or console bundles if it falls short.

Marvel’s Wolverine launches on PS5 this week, and Insomniac Games’ new title appears to carry more than just the job of pleasing Logan fans — it’s reportedly also tasked with selling at least 6 million copies in its first year. This isn’t exactly new information, but it resurfaced on the eve of launch thanks to documents obtained in the 2023 cyberattack on Insomniac, which included details of the contract Sony and Marvel struck covering Wolverine and future X-Men games.

According to the contract terms that came to light at the time, Sony and Marvel have the right to terminate the agreement if one of the three flagship titles specified in the contract fails to sell more than 6 million combined PS5 and PC units within a year of its PlayStation console launch. That makes Marvel’s Wolverine a particularly critical entry among the mutant-related projects covered by this deal.

    ?????

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

This contract clause stems from reporting based on internal documents leaked in the 2023 cyberattack on Insomniac — details that had been known in some circles before but drew renewed attention with Wolverine’s launch. The thread split over how realistic the 6-million-unit quota actually is, with one camp arguing Sony could just hit the number through free giveaways or console bundles, and another countering that doing so would fail to recoup development costs and defeat the purpose. It’s also worth noting that the contract isn’t tied to Wolverine alone — it only requires that one of three flagship titles, including other X-Men-related projects, meet the threshold, a detail easy to misread as applying to Wolverine specifically. Whether this squares with Sony’s recently stated shift away from exclusivity was another point of discussion.

  • BOJ Hikes Rates, Yet Yen Slides to the ¥157 Range as Two Dissenting Votes Dim Hopes for Further Hikes

At the Bank of Japan’s Monetary Policy Meeting on the 18th, the policy board pushed through a 0.25-point rate hike to 1.25%, overriding dissent from 2 of its 9 members. The yen, which had been trading around ¥156.10 before the announcement, paradoxically fell to the ¥157 range instead — its weakest level in roughly two weeks. Faced with this counterintuitive move of the yen weakening despite a rate hike, thread posters debated whether the “2 dissenting votes” were really a valid reason for selling, argued over the Japan-US interest rate gap and US monetary policy, and traded opinions on how social security costs and an aging population relate to monetary policy.

In Tokyo foreign exchange trading on the 18th, the yen briefly fell to the ¥157 range against the dollar. The Bank of Japan, at its Monetary Policy Meeting held through that day, decided to raise its policy rate by 0.25 points to 1.25%. However, with 2 votes cast against the hike, the yen was sold off as expectations for further rate hikes receded.

This is the first time the yen has touched the ¥157 range since the 3rd, roughly two weeks ago. Before the decision was announced, it had been trading around ¥156.10.

The heavy fiscal burden of social security costs is the real issue —

    if they cut taxes, rate hikes and a weak yen push up prices and squeeze working-age people;

if they don't cut taxes, working-age people's income gets extracted like under "gokou-gomin" (a feudal-era 50/50 tax split, used here to mean crushing taxation).

Elderly people who are healthy enough to keep working but instead live it up on social security, going on trips and so on,

are today's aristocrats, today's court nobles, today's feudal lords.

People like them are the reason social security doesn't reach the people who truly need it,

and they squeeze the working generation under that same 50/50 split.

If the working generation wants to raise its voice, it should aim it not at tax cuts or handouts, but at today's feudal lords.

US CPI growth for July 2026 was 3.4%.
Japan's CPI growth for July 2026 was 1.9%.

Japan's price increases are just import prices rising because of inflation overseas feeding through — it's not that domestic prices in Japan are actually rising on their own.

Despite the weak yen, prices in Japan are rising less than overseas.

Japan's price increases are being caused by inflation abroad, and Japan has been holding down wages to keep overseas price pressure from pushing up selling prices as much — that's how it's coping with deflationary domestic demand.

What Japan needs isn't to raise interest rates and strengthen the yen; it's to fight the deflation hidden behind high import prices and raise real wages for the working generation.
    15AnonymousSep 18, 2026 13:39
    Re: #1
The BOJ's monetary easing exists to prop up the consumption of the working generation, which has been weakened by an aging population and the policy failures of the DPJ-lineage governments (the Democratic Party for the People / Constitutional Democratic Party).

With deflation from an aging population still ongoing, and the export industries wrecked under DPJ rule still not recovered,

stopping easing and raising rates now will only shrink working-age consumption and tip things into recession.

What's needed right now is to beat back deflation caused by the aging population,

not to raise rates, cut working-age demand into a recession, and strengthen the yen along the way.

    A 0.25-point hike doesn't close the Japan-US rate gap.
So either they hike again next month,
or they pull a surprise 0.5-point hike before year-end.

The Fed's also seen as likely to hike once more before year-end,
so even another 0.25 next time won't narrow the gap.

I thought a surprise 0.5 was basically off the table,
but now it actually looks possible.

    Exactly this.
And on top of it all, the country's strength is declining.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

A rate hike is normally seen as a yen-strengthening factor, but this time the 2 dissenting votes fueled the view that “further hikes ahead will be limited,” and the yen instead weakened from around ¥156.10 beforehand to the ¥157 range. Looking only at the price action right after the announcement makes this hard to follow, but markets tend to price in the expected pace of future rate hikes more than the absolute rate level itself. Thread posts frequently centered on the Japan-US interest rate gap and the Fed’s moves, and there was also speculation about which board members cast the dissenting votes — but that speculation reflects posters’ own views within the thread and is not confirmed information. Some posts pointed to social security costs and an aging population as the cause of the rate hike and weak yen, but it should be noted separately that this is not a reason the Bank of Japan has officially given.

Overseas media report that at least seven developers have left UNSEEN, the studio developing the new action game ‘KEMURI,’ since the start of 2026. Those who departed were almost all senior staff — lead game designers, directors, and senior-level designers — a heavy blow for a small studio said to number only a few dozen people. On 5ch, many posters pointed to a controversial video in which the company reportedly said something to the effect of “people die if we port to Xbox” as the backdrop for the exodus, with discussion turning to worries about the company’s management and whether its PS5-exclusive strategy can hold up.

There are plenty of games that release on PC and Switch but skip both PS and Xbox, so maybe it's the same reason as those

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

UNSEEN is the studio founded by Ikumi Nakamura, who served as director on ‘Ghostwire: Tokyo’ at Tango Gameworks, after she left the company; ‘KEMURI’ is its first title. The departure count cited here was independently compiled by the source, gamestalk.net, and the company itself has not officially explained the reasons behind the exits. On the thread, posters repeatedly pointed to backlash over an interview video touching on Xbox porting as an underlying cause of the departures, but this is purely speculation on 5ch’s part, and no causal link between the two has been confirmed. It’s generally understood in the industry that when leads and directors leave in quick succession from a studio of only a few dozen people, it tends to affect a project’s progress and quality, and many posters voiced concern along those lines. At the same time, opinions were split over whether the departures — and the video itself — were justified, making this a topic that resists any simple verdict of right or wrong.

  • Baseball’s ‘Just Try It’ Bar Is Set Way Too High, Say 5ch Users

On 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” (Anything Goes Live) board, a thread titled “Baseball’s ‘just try it’ barrier is way too high” drew 41 replies. Posters pointed out that you need a full set of gear (bat, ball, glove), that you can’t even field a proper game without enough players to cover every position, and that batted balls travel far enough to require a lot of open space. Others pushed back, noting that “aside from gym clothes, all the equipment is usually provided” and “you only need two people to play catch.” The discussion eventually expanded into comparisons with soccer and basketball, and even the historical question of why baseball became so entrenched in popularity during the Showa and Heisei eras.

    1AnonymousSep 18, 2026 12:23
・A lot of gear needed — bat, ball, and enough gloves for everyone playing defense
・Cutting positions leaves the defense full of holes, so you need a big group
・Batted balls travel far, so you need a lot of open space

    Re: #2
Joining a school club is clearly in the "go all-in with real commitment" category.
And a lot of Japanese baseball clubs have this vibe where even thinking about having fun before grinding through brutal practice is basically unthinkable.
So if you just want to casually try it out for fun, I think the barrier is genuinely high.

Rubber-ball baseball (nanshiki — the softer ball used in most Japanese school ball) is fine.
Hardball (using a real hard ball) is no joke.
    3AnonymousSep 18, 2026 12:26
If you're left-handed you're basically doomed. Can't even borrow a glove from anyone, and there's hardly any positions open to you.
    4AnonymousSep 18, 2026 12:26
If it's just a casual try, everything except your gym clothes is usually already provided as equipment.
    5AnonymousSep 18, 2026 12:26
That's exactly why the number of players keeps shrinking.

    Re: #5
Japanese baseball still has huge spectator popularity thanks to its first-mover advantage.
But precisely because it's been so popular for so long, nobody really noticed the "high barrier to entry" problem, and now it's quietly landed in a crisis.

It's not that pro players are unaware of the shrinking player pool — they do run various initiatives.
But since most of them grew up in an environment where baseball was just naturally around from childhood, their solutions tend to lean toward things like running baseball clinics or building stadiums, which feels kind of narrow and has limited effect.
To actually grow the base of people who casually give it a try, you need an environment where it's easy to play on a whim, day-to-day.
    6AnonymousSep 18, 2026 12:27
Soccer's basically "the poor man's sport" since all you need is one ball, but baseball's not like that.

    Re: #13
Sure, batting cages and playing catch have their own depth, but there's a difference between those being your *only* options versus discovering their appeal among many other choices.
Even if it's just amateurs messing around, actually experiencing something in an actual "game" format matters a lot.
Would just juggling a soccer ball or just shooting hoops be fun on its own? You'd still want an actual match, right?
    13AnonymousSep 18, 2026 12:32
You might need gloves, but playing catch only takes two people, no?
    20AnonymousSep 18, 2026 12:37
Batting's one thing, but you need players who can field at least reasonably well. Otherwise it's just dropped balls and wild throws everywhere, and it won't even look like a game.
    31AnonymousSep 18, 2026 12:46
    Re: #20
    That's a big factor too.
Even if you make special rules like not counting balls or banning stolen bases, there's only so far that gets you.
By the way, there's a tradition in beginner games of sticking the weakest fielder in right field batting eighth (nicknamed "raipachi"), but personally I think it's better to put them in center and have both outfielders on either side fully cover for them.
Center's easier to see the ball from, and even if you can't catch flies, you can just aim to have it drop in front of you instead of sailing over your head.
There's still a risk of getting hit by the ball, though — it'd be nice if there was a ball that's a bit safer to get hit by.
Something a little closer to a real baseball than a rubber ball, but still safer, would be ideal.

If badminton or table tennis — sports with supposedly low barriers to entry — were actually growing in player numbers, that logic would track.
Also, if you're bringing up soccer and basketball as examples, don't those also need a fair number of people and space?
I'm a weirdo so I actually went through a phase of just doing shooting practice over and over in both soccer and basketball.
    34AnonymousSep 18, 2026 12:49
    Re: #30
With soccer or basketball, it's easier to make something resembling a game even with a small number of people, and even if everyone's a total amateur, it somehow still works as a game — more so than baseball.
From a parent's perspective too, parks or gyms where kids can play soccer or basketball have a lower barrier to just go and do it, compared to places to play baseball or softball, so it's easier to let your kid do it as a hobby without joining a formal club.
    33AnonymousSep 18, 2026 12:47
It'd be rough to just join in casually and find everyone around you is dead serious.

Whenever people say school clubs — especially baseball clubs — tend to be too strict, someone always chimes in that there are laid-back clubs too.
But since it's a sport that needs a lot of people, your choice of teams nearby is limited, so the odds of a casual, low-pressure team actually being near you are pretty low.
    37AnonymousSep 18, 2026 12:50

    46AnonymousSep 18, 2026 12:55
    Re: #38
Baseball fields might look fairly plentiful at first glance, but most of them require advance booking, so they're not places you can just drop by and practice on a whim.
You basically never see the kind of scene where people naturally share out sections of a ball-friendly park among themselves.

So if you want pro players to come up with measures to stop the decline in participation, I'd want them to think about things like: casual shared practice spaces you can just show up to, opportunities for casual hobbyist meetups, inventing small-group formats of baseball, and developing safer equipment for kids.
Something called "Baseball5" was actually invented for this, but playing it barehanded seems a bit too extreme.

If you made it more like a real-life version of that tabletop baseball game (yakyuban), maybe you could get by without fielders.

"Equipment costs, blah blah" — same deal. Acting like baseball is the only sport where you can't play unless every condition is perfectly set up, and using that as an excuse for why it's "too high a barrier," is just lame.
    54AnonymousSep 18, 2026 13:00
    Re: #41
It's genuinely true that the barrier is higher than other sports.
That's literally what's being pointed out here.
Sure, other sports also take some effort if you want perfect conditions, but nowhere near as much as baseball — baseball's *minimum* bar is just higher than the rest.
Whether you can even play a game, even a mini one, matters a lot.
Even official soccer matches only require 7 players to count as a game.
    61AnonymousSep 18, 2026 13:02
Baseball's player numbers have dropped below even basketball, let alone soccer.
At the elementary school level it's only about half of soccer's numbers.

The reason "ball-kicking" and "ball-tossing" (aka soccer and basketball) are boring is that the players themselves aren't involved in scoring.

Soccer (lol) and basketball (lol): you score when the ball goes into the goal
→ Only the goal and the ball are actually involved

Baseball: players score by touching a base themselves
→ The players themselves are directly involved in scoring

My relative's kid is in middle school, and apparently the soccer club barely has any members these days too.
They said something like the team might not be able to field a squad once the third-years graduate.
Surprisingly, tennis and table tennis clubs apparently have more members.
Baseball and soccer are both sports where basically everyone started as a little kid, so the barrier to starting in middle or high school is probably high.
    68AnonymousSep 18, 2026 13:07
The people on this board running their mouths about "why doesn't anyone play baseball" are just using baseball as ammo to bait each other — none of you have the slightest intention of actually joining a pickup baseball game.

    I actually have done it.
But what I really felt was how hard it is just to create the opportunity in the first place.
Gathering people with similar enthusiasm who are also easy to actually meet up with is genuinely difficult.
Probably even more so for kids.

On top of that, I really felt that whether or not a "game" format exists makes a huge difference to your motivation for playing catch or batting practice.
A game is also, in a way, an attempt to recreate for yourself the plays you normally watch pro players make.

Futsal gives you way more chances to actually touch the ball and you run a lot less, so it's more fun for amateurs just messing around casually.
With soccer you end up spending way too much time just watching the ball and shuffling around doing nothing.

    Re: #95
Well, ever since the Meiji era baseball had this image as "the cutting-edge imported sport from the advanced nation of America," and it caught on with college students first, then spread to a wider range of generations.
I think the big factor is that it took root during an era when there weren't many entertainment options, there were plenty of places you were allowed to play baseball, and there were a lot of kids around.
    92AnonymousSep 18, 2026 13:20
That said, with just a soft colored ball and a bat you can play without even needing a glove.
Problem is there's basically no parks left these days where kids can play a simplified version of baseball.

The ball flying far is also a bad factor.

    95AnonymousSep 18, 2026 13:22
If you think about it normally, the real question isn't "why is baseball's player base shrinking?" — it's "why did something this much of a hassle dominate for so long in the first place?"

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The declining number of participants in youth baseball and school baseball clubs in Japan is an area that various sports organizations’ published data and media reports have flagged as shrinking year after year, and this thread can be seen as digging into the background of that trend through the lens of “how high the barrier to entry is.” The debate split mainly into two camps. One side argued that baseball is structurally harder to get into, pointing to how you need a full set of equipment, a large open space, and a minimum number of fielders before it even resembles a real game. The other side saw that as just an excuse, arguing that the sport’s relative appeal has simply declined — with some, like poster #95, flipping the question around to ask “why did something this labor-intensive dominate for so long in the first place?” One point worth clarifying to avoid oversimplifying: while soccer is often described as “no equipment needed, easy to jump into,” there are real differences in the rules themselves — for instance, even official soccer matches only require a minimum of 7 players — so this isn’t purely a clash of attitudes, but also reflects differences in each sport’s formal rules and structure.
