  • House vs. Condo Debate: 5ch Concludes ‘In the End, Only the Land Sells’

A poster who said “I want a detached house” found both friends and real estate agents telling him “don’t do it” — and the post lit up discussion on the Nandemo Jikkyo G board. The thread ran through all the usual housing debates: why the older generation prefers detached houses, the crushing weight of condo repair reserve fees and management fees, and the age-old math of renting versus owning. Concrete numbers flew back and forth too, like how a 40-million-yen home on a 35-year loan at 3% interest ends up costing 64.67 million yen total. “If we’re talking gains and losses, you lose horrifically” clashed with “but rent comes with renewal fees too,” and the argument never really reached a conclusion.

Older generation: "Detached house, no question! A condo isn't a real 'home' — out of the question!"
    Why is that?

Parents are thinking about daily life, right?
Everyone else is thinking about resale value
The moment you buy a house, its value is already half or less

Then after shopping it's the same thing in reverse — ramp, parking, elevator, hallway… every single time…

    98AnonymousSep 20, 2026 16:34
If you think of a house as an asset, condo is the only choice
You can sell it and turn it into cash
A detached house loses value the moment you move in, and after 20 years the building itself is worth zero

If you have no intention of leaving it as an inheritance,
and you hate it when noise comes through a single wall from next door, or you get complaints for walking too loudly,
and you can't stand hearing some other family's bratty kid screaming through the wall, then detached house is the only choice

    Simple, right?

"If you're paying 100,000 yen in rent anyway, paying 100,000 yen toward a mortgage is a better deal" — that's a devil's line
Rent stays at just 100,000 yen, but a house never stops at just the 100,000 yen mortgage payment
If you buy a house stretching your budget to the limit, bonus payments included, you're in for a world of trouble

A rental property's profit margin is around 5%
For a purchased property, ignoring interest, a 35-year loan runs at about 3%
The gap between 3% and 5% is a full 40%, so for the same monthly payment, a purchased property will get you a far higher-quality place
    110AnonymousSep 20, 2026 16:38
If you want it, just buy it, that's all there is to say — but if we're talking gains and losses, you lose to a horrific degree
Buy a 40-million-yen house at 3% interest on a 35-year loan and you'll end up repaying 64.67 million yen — that's 24.67 million yen extra in interest alone

    Re: #110
For a detached house, that'll run you 90 million yen

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Behind the debate over whether a detached house or a condo is the better deal lies a difference in how buildings are treated under the tax code. Wooden houses have a legal useful life of 22 years, while reinforced-concrete buildings are set at 47 years, meaning the two structures naturally lose value at different rates. Condos require management fees and repair reserve fund contributions to maintain shared areas, and these typically rise as the building ages. The Echigo-Yuzawa resort condos mentioned in the thread are a well-known real-world example: units sold at sky-high prices during the bubble era ended up, decades later, nearly worthless due to unpaid management fees and a lack of buyers. Detached houses, meanwhile, rack up their own hefty repair costs for exterior walls and roofing, and in the end it’s usually the land — not the building — that actually sells. It’s easy to miss, if you skim too quickly, that the thread conflates two separate axes: ‘owning vs. renting’ and ‘detached house vs. condo.’ Opinions in the thread were also split on mortgage interest rates and total repayment estimates, underscoring that this is a debate with no one-size-fits-all answer.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Nandemo Jikkyo G) thread “Me: ‘I want a detached house.’ Friend: ‘Don’t get a detached house.’ Real estate agent: ‘Don’t get a detached house.’ The detached house itself: ‘Don’t get a detached house.’“

  • Kurapika vs. Uvogin: Fans Call It One of Hunter x Hunter’s Greatest Fights

On a 5ch thread, posters have been hailing the Kurapika vs. Uvogin fight from Hunter x Hunter as one of the series’ “best bouts.” Many dug into exactly how Kurapika pulled off the win, given that he’d only just learned Nen when he took down Uvogin, the Phantom Troupe’s resident powerhouse. Theories cited multiple factors: Emperor Time pushing his Enhancer abilities past their normal ceiling, the special properties of the Scarlet Eyes, and the psychological trick of provoking Uvogin into a blind rage so he couldn’t think clearly. The thread also spilled into comparisons with other Troupe fights and past classic battles.

It's all thanks to that "filthy" Kurta blood
The Scarlet Eyes are just broken
And Kurapika was already holding his own against Hisoka back at the Hunter Exam anyway

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Kurapika’s defeat of Uvogin comes at the climax of the Phantom Troupe arc (the Yorknew City arc), at a point in the story where he’d still only recently learned Nen. Even so, armed with Scarlet Eyes strengthened through a Pledge and Limitation, plus an Enhancer breakthrough powered by Emperor Time, he’s shown taking down one of the Troupe’s most physically powerful members. The thread’s central disagreement boiled down to one question: how could a Nen beginner keep pace with a seasoned powerhouse not just in ability, but in hand-to-hand technique and speed? Some explained it away via Emperor Time and the special nature of the Scarlet Eyes, while others still felt the explanation fell short. There was also praise for the cunning of provoking Uvogin into a rage so he couldn’t calmly analyze Kurapika’s ability — posters framed the fight as a battle of wits rather than a simple contest of strength, a point that kept resurfacing when comparing it to other Troupe battles.

  • “So What AM I Supposed to Wear?!” — 5ch Erupts Over Old Guys’ Fashion Choices

On 5ch’s Hello! Project board, a casual morning-coffee chat thread kicked off a debate over middle-aged men’s fashion after someone posted, “Why do old guys love chinos so much?” Whether posters wore chinos, slacks, or jeans, they got roasted with comments like “that’s so salaryman” and “cringe” — and the conversation also touched on how different generations picture completely different silhouettes when they say “slacks,” citing Uniqlo’s tucked wide pants as the younger crowd’s version. In the end, no one could agree on what “dad-appropriate style” actually means, and the thread just kept rolling as casual chatter.

    Background and Key Points

Throughout the thread, opinions like “chinos and slacks are fine” and “jeans are borderline” flew back and forth, but a clear definition of what counts as “dad-appropriate clothing” never actually emerged. As >>93 pointed out, “you guys never say anything concrete” — and indeed, about the only one to offer a specific standard was >>34’s slacks-plus-tucked-in-shirt camp, while everyone else was simply mocked with lines like “that’s just a salaryman” or “what are you, a middle-aged guy from the American Midwest?” Terms like “flat-front” and “pipe-leg” got thrown around, and one poster (>>59) noted that when younger people say “slacks,” they likely mean something closer to Uniqlo’s tucked wide pants — a reminder that even when generations use the same word, the silhouette they picture can differ wildly, which is a classic reason these fashion debates never quite connect. The thread wrapped up without any real conclusion, drifting along as casual chat rather than a pointed criticism of any particular brand or individual.

  • Juice=Juice Members Rock Wacky Fashion Show Outfits, Fans Say ‘Still Too Gorgeous’

Members of Juice=Juice walked a fashion show runway done up in eccentric outfits and makeup far removed from their usual stage costumes, sparking a buzz on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. Thread posters had fun nicknaming members after their costume motifs — “the octopus,” “the fruit zipper” — while many chimed in that even the wildest getups couldn’t hide how good the members naturally look. Some were surprised by the avant-garde staging at what appeared to be TGC, saying they’d assumed the event only did “magazine-style trendy fashion,” while others pointed out differences in costume quality and how outfits were assigned among members.

    Background and Talking Points

The fashion show being discussed appears to be TGC (Tokyo Girls Collection). In post #59, one commenter expressed surprise, writing, “I thought they only did magazine-style trendy fashion.” TGC is generally known as a major event that showcases trendy clothing ordinary attendees can actually wear, so the eccentric costumes and makeup on display this time apparently caught participants off guard. Within the thread, joking nicknames for the outfits based on their motifs — “the octopus,” “the fruit zipper” — ran alongside praise for how the members’ good looks still shone through even in the offbeat getups. Discussion mostly centered on “the quality of the costumes and differences in how they were assigned among members” (see post #118, among others). That said, it’s worth noting that framing the disparity in costumes or roles as a “gap” reflects participants’ subjective impressions — the talent agency’s actual intent isn’t known. Comments about individual members were all favorable remarks about appearance, not insults or unfounded accusations.

  • Giants Give Up Early Runs to Yakult — 5ch Erupts in Anguish Over ‘A Win Today Puts Us in First!’

A thread about the Giants vs. Yakult game at Tokyo Dome. In the heat of the pennant race, with a win meaning first place, the Giants fell behind starting in the first inning due to baserunning blunders and shaky pitching control. Posters traded blame over the questionable baserunning calls and pitcher usage that led to the early runs, with comments like “those two idiots in the first inning wrecked everything” and “our team is cursed to never have a better winning percentage than Hanshin.” Adding to the tension, the Hanshin–DeNA game later that evening could also swing the outcome of the pennant race.

If we lose today and the Tigers (珍 — a mocking nickname for Hanshin) win, it's over

    Background and Key Points

The Central League is in the closing stretch of a pennant race between the Giants and the Hanshin Tigers, and on this day a Giants win over Yakult would have put them in first place. The thread pins the early runs on a first-inning baserunning gamble (taking a risky extra base that ended in a close-call out), with posters directing more frustration at the coaching decisions than at individual players. The thread also frames the day’s outcome as tied to the Hanshin–DeNA game later that evening, since its result would directly affect the pennant race. As this is a live thread, it captures only fragmentary, in-the-moment commentary — the final result of the game and any resulting standings changes are not settled within the scope of this thread.

  • Nagoya Asian Games Hit by Housing Failures — Organizers Tell India’s Team Chief to “Figure It Out Yourselves”

At the Asian Games being held in Japan for the first time in 32 years (Aichi/Nagoya), complaints over athletes’ housing conditions have been boiling over even before the opening ceremony. Citing soaring material costs, organizers skipped building a dedicated athletes’ village this time and instead scattered athletes across hotels, a cruise ship, and container-style temporary housing. India’s delegation reportedly waited 14 hours for their rooms to be readied, and Thailand’s team is said to have spent the night in the lobby. The operations are being run by a French company, which has also been linked to an unpaid-bills controversy at the Osaka Expo. Reactions on the forum split between criticism of the contracting decisions that led to this mess and broader skepticism about hosting international events like this at all.

    Sun, Sep 20, 6:30 AM

With the Aichi/Nagoya Asian Games — held in Japan for the first time in 32 years — about to get fully underway, athletes’ complaints are boiling over.

Athletes from overseas have exposed shortcomings in the host country’s preparations. The issue drawing the most criticism is the state of the housing that athletes and each country’s team officials are based in. This time, Japan’s organizing committee cited soaring construction material costs and chose not to build a conventional “athletes’ village.” Instead, it adopted a system spreading people across existing hotels, a cruise ship, and container-style temporary housing.

That's because the Olympic Council of Asia just went ahead and added 3,000 more people on their own.

Governor Omura addressed the question at his regular press conference on the 25th, saying, "The host city contract specifies 15,000 athletes. We haven't budgeted for more than that. There's physically nowhere for them to stay."

He already threw up the white flag a month ago. There was no budget for it to begin with, and then they just tacked on extra people without asking.

Aichi Prefecture is the dumb one here — they told everyone they'd be staying in an athletes' village.
The French company just doesn't keep its promises.

    Background and Key Issues

Behind the decision not to build a dedicated athletes’ village for this Games lies a combination of factors: soaring construction material costs, and the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) later adding to the originally planned delegation size of 15,000. Aichi’s governor said a month before the opening that there was “physically nowhere to house them,” so the shortage isn’t something that surfaced suddenly at the last minute. As for the French company contracted to run operations, it was also embroiled in an unpaid-subcontractor controversy at the Osaka Expo, and the thread repeatedly raised doubts about its track record. What tends to get overlooked here is that responsibility is spread across multiple factors — inadequate preparation on the Japanese side, OCA’s after-the-fact increase in delegation numbers, and the contractor’s operational competence — so it isn’t a case that can be pinned on just one party. It’s also worth noting that the container-style housing is reportedly planned for reuse as emergency disaster housing after the Games, a design consideration that gets lost in the purely critical reactions.

※This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5channel (Sports News+ board) thread “[Asian Games] India’s Team Chief Makes a Desperate Plea — Frustrated by Operational Failures, Japan’s Organizing Committee Reportedly Says ‘There’s No Housing, Figure It Out Yourselves’…“

  • The ‘3 Absolute Rules’ Osamu Tezuka Imposed on Manga Artists

A thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board sprang up to swap trivia about manga legend Osamu Tezuka. Tezuka reportedly held himself to three absolute rules: never mock war victims, specific professions, or specific ethnic groups. Building on that, posters piled on tidbits — how the departure jingle at Takadanobaba Station comes from “Astro Boy,” the backstory behind Black Jack’s unlicensed medical practice, and Tezuka’s friendship with Takashi Yanase. Opinions split along generational lines too: some said “Black Jack is about the only one still fun to read today,” while others countered that his works have long been staples of school library shelves.

The 3 rules Osamu Tezuka set that manga artists must never break
    · Never draw content that mocks victims of war or natural disasters.

Tezuka was heavily influenced by Disney and American cartoons to begin with, so he was skilled at mixing gags (satire) into even the most tragic stories.

Shigeru Mizuki and Takashi Yanase took care of their health and lived long lives.
Tezuka and Shotaro Ishinomori, on the other hand, neglected their health and died young.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Osamu Tezuka died in 1989 at age 60. The three principles discussed in the thread — never mocking war victims, specific professions, or specific ethnic groups — are known from sources such as his book “How to Draw Manga.” That said, as post #33 points out regarding character depictions in his early work, it’s worth noting that Tezuka’s works have repeatedly drawn industry discussion over revisions made to their depictions in later reprints — there was a gap between the stated principles and how individual works actually portrayed things. Opinions in the thread split over whether his work is “still fun to read today,” with some saying nothing but Black Jack holds up and others countering that his books have long endured as staples on school library shelves for children. The thread ranged well beyond a simple highlight reel of his famous works too, touching on trivia like the departure jingle at Takadanobaba Station, his friendship with Takashi Yanase, and the differing attitudes toward health behind the early deaths of Tezuka and Shotaro Ishinomori.

At the Asian Games that kicked off in Nagoya, Thai media reported that Thailand’s teqball head coach, Papuchompoo, jokingly grumbled that organizers “only gave us a tiny bit” when it came to athlete meals at the venue. A post claiming athletes could pick only one type of vegetable, in skimpy portions, spread on Facebook and became a talking point. On 5channel, the story snowballed as users piled on with reports of other operational headaches — a delayed shuttle bus for South Korea’s basketball team, and complaints about short beds and water leaks in the container-style athlete housing. Opinions split between those who saw it as evidence that hastily-added events were being under-supported, and those who dismissed the complaints as spoiled griping.

A broke country with a weak yen.

Background and key points of this story

The Nagoya Asian Games only opened on September 19, 2026, and thread posters point out that events like teqball and padel were added to the program shortly before the Games began. Some 5channel posts claim that because these sports weren’t part of the original contract, budgets for lodging and meals were limited — leading to container housing and rules against athletes serving themselves. It’s worth noting, though, that this explanation comes from posters’ secondhand accounts, not an official statement from the Games’ organizing committee. What started as a thread about food expanded into complaints about other operational hiccups — a delayed shuttle bus for South Korea’s team, gripes about bed size — raising broader questions about the host operation. At the same time, some argue the portion sizes were no different from a normal buffet setup and that the backlash is overblown, so opinions remain divided.

The announcement of a new TV anime, “Shin Oishinbo,” has fans expressing both joy and confusion. That’s because while the original manga “Oishinbo” is hugely popular, it’s also a work that has stirred up all kinds of controversy.

Serialized for over 30 years since 1983, its depictions of food and cooking have at times been pointed out by experts and media as factually inaccurate. Some characters’ remarks would also be difficult to portray as-is under today’s compliance standards.

The producer behind this reboot has no taste.
They'll probably change everything to fit today's standards and ruin what made it great.
    What are they even thinking?

If they're rebooting it knowing full well about all that, I'd rather they just stick to the original.

TVK was airing it up until this year, but there were so many skipped episodes the story didn't connect.
Even old anime with content that's inappropriate by today's standards often gets aired unchanged — but apparently this show doesn't get that same leeway.

Just focus on roughly the first 15 volumes of the original — the razor-sharp, ferocious Yuzan Kaibara and the human-trash version of Yamaoka.

Who wants to see those two after they went all warm and fuzzy?

Honestly, I think the edgier tone from the early volumes would land even better with today's audience.

Yuzan being trash and Yamaoka being a mad dog didn't actually last that long.

    Background and Talking Points

Oishinbo is a long-running gourmet manga that has been serialized in Big Comic Spirits since 1983, with a TV anime adaptation that aired from 1988 to 1992. The original anime has had multiple episodes skipped during reruns, including “The Taste of Gyunabe” and “Japanese-Style Curry,” both mentioned in the thread. No official reason has been given, but depictions of foreign customers and negative references to specific foods or regions are often cited as likely causes. The manga is also known for drawing criticism as “factually inaccurate,” including social controversy in 2014 over an episode dealing with the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster that depicted characters reporting ill health. Given this history, the key question for the new anime project will likely be how much of the original’s bite and sharp edges to preserve. The thread showed a split between posters who praised the aggressive early characterizations of Yuzan Kaibara and Shiro Yamaoka, and those wary that compliance concerns will smooth the story over.

  • Koji Kato Storms Out After Huge Fight With Wife Over “Bad Curry” — Her Parting Words Sting

Koji Kato of the comedy duo Gokuraku Tombo appeared on TBS’s “Jinsei Saiko Restaurant” (Life’s Best Restaurant) on the 19th and revealed a marital spat over his wife’s home cooking. Back when their kids were small, the family curry was made mild to suit them, and Kato — who prefers his spicy — said he ate it while grumbling to himself, “Man, this is sweet.” The remark set off a wave of stories on 5ch about how different households handle curry, the hassle of making separate spicy and mild batches, and even leaning on store-bought retort pouches instead. Meanwhile, some posters voiced discomfort at airing marital matters on TV at all, and others sarcastically called making bad curry a “talent.”

Koji Kato of Gokuraku Tombo appeared on TBS’s “Jinsei Saiko Restaurant” on the 19th, where he confessed to a huge fight over his wife’s home cooking.

The episode featured former Japan national football team player Yoichiro Kakitani as a guest. When talk turned to dinner tables in households with young kids, Kato began, “When the kids are little, it turns sweet, you know — the curry. Because they can’t eat it spicy,” and admitted he used to eat it while thinking, “Man, this is so sweet,” gritting his teeth through it.

    Background and Discussion Points

This isn’t the first time Kato has brought up his family’s curry situation — as one commenter on the thread pointed out, “he’s been telling this story for 15 years” — it’s said to be an anecdote he’s returned to in the media repeatedly over the years. The show itself is a talk program where celebrities reminisce about memorable meals, and this comment came as an extension of that format. Where the thread split was over whether airing this kind of marital exchange on TV is appropriate at all, with some dismissing it coolly as “just him bragging about his wife,” while the conversation also spun off into people swapping their own household tricks for making curry. Worth noting, as some replies that misread the original comment show, is that Kato never flatly said “my wife’s cooking is bad” — he was explaining that the curry was made mild for the kids’ sake, a nuance that’s easy to miss. The thread also gathered plenty of stories about how spice preferences shift with age, making it a thread that, in its own way, revealed some surprising depth behind something as ordinary as home-cooked curry.
