  • Nintendo Sued Palworld but Won’t Touch ‘Animo’ — 5ch’s Gaming Board Debates Why

As the monster-collecting game “Animo” becomes a hot topic, a thread on 5ch’s Console Wars board (ゲハ) asked: “Nintendo sued Palworld, so why isn’t it suing Animo?” Nintendo and The Pokémon Company sued Palworld developer Pocketpair for patent infringement back in 2024, and with that still fresh in posters’ minds, the board debated why this situation is being handled differently. Some argued visual similarity alone justifies a lawsuit, while others countered that the real issue is whether patent infringement can actually be proven — and confusion over the developer’s nationality only muddied things further.

They didn't sue Genshin Impact either — guess Chinese companies are too scary to mess with, lol
Isn't it embarrassing to only act tough against indie devs?

They can still make enough trouble that stores won't stock it properly, like what happened to Palworld.
And overseas fans have actually been saying they won't forgive Animo for ripping off Palworld.
    19AnonymousSep 22, 2026 12:12

Well, thanks to that it won't blow up into controversy or get any free publicity, so it'll be gone soon enough anyway.
    29AnonymousSep 22, 2026 12:15
If that counts as grounds for a lawsuit, they'd have sued half the Game Boy library by now, lol

    Everyone's thinking it.
But it's Nintendo, so what can you do.

Honestly, I think Loco Kingdom is the bigger threat.
    32AnonymousSep 22, 2026 12:15
In the first place, Nintendo sued because Palworld was made to look so much like Pokémon that people might assume it was actually connected to Nintendo.
Nobody looks at Genshin or Animo and thinks they're connected to Nintendo, so there's no need to sue.
    33AnonymousSep 22, 2026 12:16
Unlike when Palworld launched, there wasn't a huge outcry calling this a blatant Pokémon rip-off.
With Palworld it was such a scandal that some outlets actually contacted Nintendo for comment — nothing like that happened with Animo.
Public perception is probably just "another game with some monster-collecting elements," nothing more.

And yet Palworld's the one that got sued — how badly do you have to play your cards to end up like that… lol

Background and Key Points of This Debate

In September 2024, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company sued Palworld developer Pocketpair for patent infringement. The dispute reportedly centers not on visual similarity between the monsters, but on several patents covering things like how monsters are captured out in the field. The thread split over this basic premise: some posts framed the lawsuit question purely around “do the monsters look alike,” while others insisted the real issue is “can patent infringement actually be demonstrated.” There was also speculation that Nintendo was hesitant to sue because Animo’s developer is Chinese, though other posters pointed out that the studio is actually based in Singapore — showing that even the basic facts were in dispute. It’s also worth remembering that Palworld was repeatedly reported on as “Pokémon-style” from the moment it launched, generating major buzz — a backdrop worth keeping in mind when trying to understand why Nintendo is handling this case differently.

  • Chiba Flooding: Water Still Hasn’t Drained After a Full Night — 5ch: “This Prefecture Is Finished”

On September 22, 2026, flooding from heavy rain in Chiba Prefecture that still hadn’t drained after a full night became a hot topic on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyō G” (general live-chat) board. Photos of submerged vending machines and cars, along with talk of the low-lying areas around Lake Inba and flood-control work in Mobara City, poured in one after another, with differences in terrain and drainage infrastructure becoming the central topic of debate. Some compared it to Nagoya, where floodwaters reportedly receded within a few hours, and the thread was united by one question: why won’t the water in Chiba drain?

The area around Lake Inba was originally low-lying land that flooded constantly, and Sakura Station was built right on that low ground.
City hall and the old houses near Sakura Castle are properly built up on the hill, so they must've known that area would flood in heavy rain.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Northern Chiba Prefecture has many areas, including around Lake Inba, that were originally low-lying wetlands, and urban development has expanded into land prone to flooding whenever heavy rain hits — such as around Sakura Station. On the thread, Chiba’s slow drainage was questioned in comparison to Nagoya, where floodwaters reportedly receded within a few hours, but the rainfall comparison (a post claiming about 150mm more over 24 hours) is only a claim made on 5ch, and this article could not confirm it against official data such as from the Japan Meteorological Agency. On the other hand, in places like Mobara City, riverbank reinforcement work paid off and kept river flooding in check, showing that even within Chiba Prefecture, outcomes varied depending on how developed local flood-control infrastructure was. The prolonged flooding may stem not just from rainfall amounts but from a combination of factors, including low-lying terrain and the processing capacity of drainage facilities.

    Re: #94
There's a proper build-up behind that costume, you know

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“HOT LIMIT” is one of TM Revolution’s signature songs, released in 2001. The flashy costume vocalist Nishikawa Takanori wore in the music video became a talking point at the time, and other artists have kept the bit alive ever since, recreating it as an inside joke at live shows and festivals. Takenaka appears to have worn the costume with that context in mind, but Korean fans may not have been familiar with the song or the costume’s backstory, and likely saw it as simply a bizarre outfit. The thread also veered into tangents about how Nishikawa Takanori is regarded and comparisons to other cases of overseas artists losing followers, with reactions splitting largely along the lines of who was in on the shared context of Japanese music in-jokes.

People with about this level of education tend to get a chip on their shoulder —
especially if they rose up partway through and started feeling invincible.

On the flip side, some kids get pegged in middle school as shoo-ins for Todai, Kyoto U, Hitotsubashi, or Osaka U,
then fall short later — some of those end up like this too, while others become overly self-conscious instead.

Among private universities, it's the type who'd say "I took the old Showa-era Chuo University Law Faculty exam —

    Re: #170
Does that restaurant even serve plain soda water on its own, I wonder?

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Calpis Soda is made by cutting Calpis concentrate with soda water — a different product, made by a different process, from ready-to-drink Calpis Water. As pointed out in the thread, many restaurants serve pre-made Calpis Water straight from commercial dispensers, and plenty of establishments don’t handle the concentrate separately at all. There’s also a practical business reason chains in particular tend to refuse such requests: mixing up a drink that’s not on the menu creates a mismatch between recorded pour amounts (inventory tracking) and actual stock on hand. On 5ch, opinions split between rebuttals grounded in these restaurant-side constraints and calls for “common sense” befitting someone with his reach. As for his educational background, while he’s noted as having gone on to Kobe University’s Faculty of Business Administration, commenters in the thread also pointed out that he dropped out — details that can’t be confirmed from the original article alone.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread ““Maybe he’s lacking common sense” — Influencer with 3 million total followers Kai Haruki (38) sparks controversy over his take after being refused a Calpis Soda at a restaurant.”

  • Switch 2’s Star Fox Struggles to Sell — 5ch: ‘It’s Just a Remake, and Still…’

Nintendo’s Switch 2 release of Star Fox is a remake of 1997’s Star Fox 64 that keeps the original’s stage layouts while giving the graphics a major overhaul — on sale for ¥4,457 (31% off). On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry board (Geha), a thread sprang up over the game’s sales performance, with posters pointing to the decline of the rail-shooter genre itself, divided opinions on the character designs, and a general sense that the remake doesn’t offer enough. Others countered by citing a figure of ‘over 60,000 units sold total,’ arguing that’s a solid showing compared to other niche titles — so opinions ended up split.

    Sale price: ¥4,457 (31% off)

Star Fox is based on Star Fox 64, released for the Nintendo 64 in 1997, keeping the same stage layouts while dramatically upgrading the graphics. It features all the familiar banter with Peppy, Slippy, Falco and the rest, plus newly added cutscenes.

    Re: #99
    You again?
Even a bot could come up with something else to say

Background and key points of this debate

Star Fox 64 launched for the Nintendo 64 in 1997, and this Switch 2 release is essentially a port-like remake that keeps the original stage layouts while boosting the graphics. Rail shooters (3D shooters) are a genre that saw new releases dry up sharply from the 2000s onward, and that decline came up repeatedly in the thread. That said, figures cited in the thread like ‘69,657 units’ or ‘over 60,000 units total’ are based on individual posters’ own memory or tallies, not official numbers released by Nintendo or the press — worth keeping in mind. Comparisons to other titles (selling 20x more than another game, outselling PS5’s Pragmata, etc.) also don’t translate cleanly into a simple ranking, since the platforms and genres involved differ. Underlying the split reaction to its sales seems to be less about the remake’s quality itself and more about the ambiguity of who exactly it was made for.

  • Italy to Ban Burqas in Schools, Require Immigrant Parents to Learn Italian

Italy has announced plans to ban burqas on school grounds and require the parents of foreign students who fail to integrate to take Italian language lessons. The news sparked a wave of “Japan should follow suit” comments on 5ch, though others pointed out that the premise doesn’t quite carry over — in Japan, niqabs and burqas already get you turned away at convenience store entrances, unlike in Italy. Rather than settling into simple pros and cons, the thread drifted into a broader argument about Japan’s own approach to immigration and assimilation.

    Re: #87
Niqabs and burqas already get you barred from entering convenience stores in Japan

    Background and Key Points

The key thing here is that Italy’s new measure isn’t a nationwide burqa ban — it’s limited to schools, paired with a system requiring parents to take Italian lessons if their children fail to integrate. That’s a narrower scope than France’s public-space bans. Japan has no comparable law, but as commenters in the thread pointed out, stores already turn away customers wearing niqabs or burqas for security reasons, so Italy’s measure doesn’t map onto Japan quite as directly as some assumed. The thread ended up less about Italy’s policy itself and more a proxy fight over the ruling party’s immigration stance and its “multicultural coexistence” line.

  • Timelesz’s 6 Commercials Wiped Out After One Member’s Arrest — 5ch: ‘Well, That Blew Up in His Face lol’

Following the arrest of Timelesz member Shuto Inomata on assault charges, commercials he appeared in are being pulled one after another. The limited-edition ABC-MART ad was taken down just 5 days after release, and a total of 6 ads — including Nissin Foods’ “Chicken Ramen,” AOKI, mobile battery rental service “CHARGESPOT,” and even a Google Pixel ad — disappeared within days. On the thread, reactions ranged from surprise that ads featuring other members got pulled too even though only one was arrested, to talk about the group’s rename from Sexy Zone to Timelesz, and speculation that the penalty fees could run into the hundreds of millions of yen.

“Following the announcement, each company acted immediately. On the 19th, when the arrest was reported, ABC-MART took down the ad images and commercial video for the limited-edition ‘TEKWEN’ model featuring Timelesz. The commercial had only gone up on the 14th, meaning it was shelved after just 5 days.

Nissin Foods also pulled its ‘Chicken Ramen’ commercial, which featured Inomata alongside fellow members Masaki Hashimoto and Daiki Shinozuka, and he also disappeared from the fermented beauty supplement ‘ByGLOW,’ where he had been serving as its first-ever solo brand ambassador.

The next day, the 20th, ‘AOKI’ and smartphone charger rental service ‘CHARGESPOT’ followed suit, and by the 21st Google had removed related images and videos for ‘Google Pixel’ as well. It’s essentially become a total wipeout of his commercial work” (entertainment reporter)

Background and Key Points of This Story

Commercial contracts commonly include an ‘image clause’ that allows immediate termination and penalty claims if a scandal occurs, so it isn’t unusual for multiple ads — in this case ABC-MART, Nissin Foods, AOKI, CHARGESPOT, Google Pixel, and others — to get pulled all at once within days of an arrest, as happened here. What stands out is that even commercials Inomata himself didn’t appear in got caught up and cancelled along with the rest of the group’s campaigns, which is what fueled the thread’s surprise that ‘one person’s screwup wiped out everyone’s ads.’ Note that Timelesz is the renamed version of Sexy Zone, and this arrest itself has no direct connection to the former Johnny’s Office’s (now Starto Entertainment) past issues. The thread included speculation tying the agency’s past problems into the story, along with baseless jabs at the victim, but since none of that has been confirmed by reporting, this article doesn’t address it.

  • Approached by an Amway Recruiter Met at a Job Fair — 5ch Asks: “Is There Such a Thing as a Pyramid Scheme Face?”

A post went up on 5ch describing how the poster, invited out by someone they’d met at a job fair, walked as far as the building entrance before realizing it was an Amway recruitment pitch and turning back. Users with similar experiences flooded the thread with details: meetings staged with a fixed two-against-one seating arrangement, an organizational structure where recruiters link together like parent and child, and the tactic of serving home-cooked meals at house parties. Reactions varied — some said they simply took the free food without joining, while others voiced anxiety over having handed out their contact information.

It's structured like a yakuza racket ("the ya character" — 5ch slang for yakuza), with parent-child relationships all the way down.
A "parent" keeps a stable of "children," and those children have children of their own.
When a "child" gets a mark to pay up, a cut flows back up to the "parent," and they'll even give a freshly recruited "child" a place to live so they can't run off right after being sworn in.

    Background and Talking Points

Amway is well known in Japan as a major player in “multi-level marketing” (network business), characterized by pricey proprietary products — water purifiers, air purifiers, cookware — sold through a chain of recruitment among acquaintances. Legally, it operates under registration with Japan’s Act on Specified Commercial Transactions and is distinct from an outright pyramid scheme (mugen rensa-kou), but the “profits flow from child up to parent” structure described in the thread is similar enough that the two are often conflated. The thread also shows recruitment often starting from familiar settings, like a job fair or an old elementary school classmate, not just approaches from total strangers. Several posters noted that handing over contact information rarely leads to actual financial harm, but that’s based on individual anecdotes — the thread doesn’t address other potential costs, like persistent follow-up recruitment or strain on personal relationships.

  • New PS Handheld Rumored to Launch Alongside PS6 in Late 2027 — 5ch: ‘It’ll Just End Up a Worse Switch 2’

According to reports carried by overseas media, Sony is said to be developing a new PlayStation handheld console, with a launch planned for late 2027 — the same timeframe as the PS6. It reportedly aims to support three generations of software (PS4, PS5, and PS6), and unlike the PlayStation Portal, which was merely a remote-play device, this new handheld is expected to run games on its own, without needing to stream from another console. On 5ch’s gaming industry (“Geha”) board, the discussion leaned less toward simple pros and cons and more toward skepticism, with users voicing concerns about being forced to pay for both a home console and a handheld at the same time, doubts over whether three-generation compatibility is truly achievable, and caution about taking an unconfirmed leak at face value in the first place.

New information has emerged regarding the new PlayStation handheld that Sony is reportedly developing, suggesting the company is aiming for a late 2027 release. Rather than being a remote-play-only device like the PlayStation Portal, it’s believed to be a full-fledged handheld gaming console capable of running games entirely on its own.

    Launching alongside the PS6?

As for timing, reports indicate that the new PlayStation handheld and the PS6 will launch simultaneously in late 2027.

For PlayStation, compatibility actually works against them.

Why are these people making a fuss over 'a handheld is coming, a handheld is coming' when it's already possible?
Isn't it because it's not properly realized yet that they still want it?

    Background and Points of Contention

The source for this story is sumahodigest.com, an overseas leak-aggregation site — this is not an official Sony announcement. There’s history feeding the skepticism here: about six months before its own launch, the PlayStation Portal was reportedly redesigned from a device meant to run games on its own into a remote-play-only unit that just streams video to phones and the like (see comment #38), and that reversal is why the thread swings between hoping ‘maybe this time it’s a real handheld’ and suspecting ‘this is just another leak running away with itself.’ The debate centers on two main points: (1) the cost burden — launching alongside the PS6 could mean a pricing structure that pushes people to buy both a home console and a handheld at once; and (2) whether building in compatibility across three generations, PS4 through PS6, is realistic both technically and commercially. Some commenters value backward compatibility as a feature, while others point out that leaning on it can slow the pace of new game releases — making this a topic that doesn’t reduce to a simple thumbs-up or thumbs-down. In compiling this article, some comments containing political name-calling or slurs mocking people with disabilities were excluded.

  • Leap Second Officially Abolished — 5ch Reacts: “System Engineers Rejoice!”

The “leap second,” which has adjusted the one-second discrepancy between Earth’s rotation and atomic clocks for half a century, has been officially abolished. Introduced in 1972, it has been inserted 27 times since, but growing concerns over computer glitches and trouble in financial transactions had fueled calls for a review. In its place comes the “leap hour,” which will tolerate discrepancies of up to one hour, meaning no adjustment should be needed for at least several centuries. On 5ch, the thread lit up with trivia-flavored chatter — sarcastic remarks that daylight saving time should be scrapped first, speculation on why Earth’s rotation has been speeding up lately, and simple bafflement over why leap years and leap seconds are named so differently.

The “leap second” is being abolished. Introduced in 1972 to reconcile the gap between Earth’s rotation and atomic clock time, it has been inserted 27 times over the past half-century. In recent years, however, concerns over computer malfunctions and trouble in financial transactions have fueled growing calls for a review. In its place, a “leap hour” will be introduced, tolerating discrepancies of up to one hour — meaning time adjustments likely won’t be needed again for at least several centuries.

Re: #52 is pointing at the discomfort with the term "leap year," right?
Both "leap month" and "leap second" add or subtract a month/second, but a "leap year" doesn't actually add a year.

Strictly speaking, a leap year is "a year in which a leap day is inserted into February."

Normally, Earth's rotation keeps slowing down —
and in fact, up until now it had been gradually slowing, with some fluctuation along the way.
So why is it spinning faster now?
Oil drilling, ore mining, tunnel excavation reshaping the terrain,
plus shifts in internal structures — probably something in the mantle —
that seem to have moved quite abruptly. I think that's the cause.
    87AnonymousSep 22, 2026 12:33
    Re: #71
Maybe it's the other way around?
What if the atomic clock's own "tick speed" has slowed down for some reason,
and the clock's rate is what's off?
To put it in extreme terms:
suppose something used to take 10 seconds by the atomic clock.
If the clock's ticking rate becomes half as fast as before,
the second hand only advances 5 seconds' worth,
so the "measured elapsed time" comes out smaller —
making the object's motion look like it sped up,
leading to the conclusion "the motion got faster."

But we're talking about such incredibly tiny fractions of time
that comparison with the past is basically impossible,
and since the very "ruler for measuring the passage of time"
    is itself stretching and shrinking,
an accurate comparison with before just isn't possible.

A year is 365 days, but Earth's actual orbital period is about 365.25 days.
Leave that alone and it drifts a full day every 4 years,

and Obon becomes the tail end of summer — "still hot, but mornings and evenings
are getting more comfortable" by then.

    Re: #95
Even if you say it'd be fine,
years/months/days run on the orbital cycle
    while hours/minutes/seconds run on rotation.
The "365 days" thing doesn't line up with that at all —
you're just listing two completely separate things side by side.
    109AnonymousSep 22, 2026 12:54
Isn't a full hour of correction kind of a lot?
If the goal is to cut down how often you have to adjust, I'd think minute-level increments would've made more sense.

No need to worry about something that'll only matter after you're dead.

    Re: #109
    Yeah, it's actually pretty huge.
Computerization ended up making this less rational, not more —
they could've just let some central authority handle clocks however it wanted.

    Re: #109
For now they've just decided to tolerate up to a 1-hour gap,
but how it'll actually be operated hasn't been decided yet.
For example, they might end up inserting a "leap minute" once things drift by a minute,
but that's roughly a century away, so there's plenty of time to hash out the details.
    117AnonymousSep 22, 2026 13:03
Do you all know why January 1st is January 1st?

The day currently designated as New Year's isn't the winter solstice, isn't perihelion, and has no particular astronomical significance — so why was this the day chosen?

The day mochi tastes best, probably.

Is this story going to be a long one?

    Re: #115
Probably because the leap second is a concept that only emerged in theory once precise scientific calculation became possible.
If you don't phrase it in intuitive terms, it's hard to grasp.

    Re: #124
    That's not what I meant. It's:
"correcting with a second" → leap second
"correcting with a month" → leap month

but then "correcting with a day" becomes "leap year" — that mismatch is what feels off.

    Re: #131
No, that's exactly what we're talking about.
    Keep up.

    Re: #131
Even under the old lunisolar calendar, a year with an inserted leap month was also called a "leap year."
Conversely, even today, February 29th itself is called a "leap day"
(though people rarely bother with that term since it's quicker to just say "February 29th").
    130AnonymousSep 22, 2026 13:12
Isn't it just that they mixed it up with Christ's birthday?
If you center it on the winter solstice you land around February,
and Christ's birthday is a bit over a month before that,
so somewhere around there felt right,
and they probably just settled on the tail end of the Christmas holidays.

    Re: #130
New Year's Day is set so that the spring equinox lands around March 21st —
that's how it was arranged when the Gregorian calendar was adopted in the 16th century.
In that sense it's not totally meaningless astronomically.

The spring equinox also ties into Easter on top of farming, so there's a strong religious dimension to it too.

    Re: #130
Mostly it's the Roman emperors' fault.
Under the Julian calendar that preceded today's Gregorian calendar, February was the end of the year and March was the start — because that's how the emperor decided it.
That's why February got stuck with the leftover 28 days, with one extra day tacked on in leap years to balance things out.
The Roman emperors also did plenty of other self-serving things, like adding months or shifting which months got 31 days, pretty much as they pleased.

The Gregorian calendar was later codified by the Pope based on astronomical observations and the like, but since it built on the existing Julian calendar, it inherited that habit of balancing things out in February.

Well, I'd guess they'll come up with some correction system that avoids scattering bugs everywhere before the gap even reaches a full hour. Or maybe they'll use satellite observations to keep Earth's motion and clocks perfectly in sync.
    150AnonymousSep 22, 2026 13:24
    Re: #145
There's no real benefit to keeping time perfectly synced with Earth's motion.
Scientifically speaking, time that flows uniformly without exception is far more useful.
My guess is that by the time the gap hits an hour, they'll just decide to "let it keep drifting as-is."

It'll stop matching up with longitude —
the International Date Line would have to shift, right?

    Re: #150
Maybe it'll split into "everyday clock time" versus "measured/scientific time." Though that does seem like it'd need a pretty major technical breakthrough.

Background and key points of this discussion

The leap second corrects drift in Earth’s rotation (the length of a day), while the leap year corrects drift in Earth’s orbit (the length of a year) — different targets, different mechanisms entirely. But in the thread, the shared character “leap” (閏) in both terms made them easy to mix up, which became a talking point in itself. What’s being abolished this time is the former; its replacement, the “leap hour,” allows discrepancies to build up to a full hour before correcting, meaning no adjustment work will be needed at all for the foreseeable future. As for why Earth’s rotation has been speeding up slightly in recent years, commenters floated various theories — melting glaciers, crustal shifts, and more — but neither the article nor the thread pinned it on any single definitive cause, treating each as merely a contributing factor. The operational details of exactly when a “leap hour” would actually be inserted are also still an open question, but since there’s no need to rush an answer for decades at least, it’s been left for future discussion.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Newsflash+) thread “Leap second abolition officially decided in October — Earth’s rotation speeding up, leap hour to be introduced.”
