  • Women’s Volleyball: Japan Blows 8-Point Lead, Crushed 0-3 by China in Stunning Collapse…Asian Games

At the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games women’s volleyball competition, Japan trailed China 0-2 in sets but built an 8-point lead at one point in the third set — only to watch it slip away and lose in straight sets. The defeat ended Japan’s shot at its first gold medal in 48 years. On 5ch, discussion ranged from analysis of the late-match collapse, to questions about a lineup that left out key players like Mayu Ishikawa, to theories on why China is strong specifically at volleyball despite generally struggling in team sports.

    Sports Hochi, September 22, 2026, 8:53 PM

Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, Day 4, Volleyball (September 22, Komaki City Sports Park General Gymnasium)

Pushed to the brink at 0-2 in sets against China, Japan rallied in the third set but couldn’t hold on, falling in straight sets, 0-3.

Thailand, ranked lower than Japan, already grabbed an Olympic berth.
There's a chance a lower-ranked country snags next year's World Cup spot too,

Unlike basketball or volleyball, height alone doesn't give you an edge. Also, soccer is by far the most popular sport in the Middle East, so competition within Asia is fierce there — China can't even beat the Middle Eastern powers to begin with.

It's to test out new talent — Ishikawa's sulking and sat this one out.

    Background and Talking Points

Japan’s pursuit of “its first gold medal in 48 years” reflects a long history of being blocked by Asian powerhouses like China and Korea. This time, after falling behind 0-2 in sets, Japan built as much as an 8-point lead in the third set, only to get caught and lose in straight sets — an unusual kind of collapse that posters framed less as a simple talent gap and more as a full-blown “mental meltdown.” Opinions in the thread split over how to judge the loss: some argued that fielding a lineup without key players like Mayu Ishikawa meant the team “wasn’t serious,” while others pointed out that the Asian Games carry different weight than the Olympics, and that prioritizing match experience for next-generation players in this kind of tournament isn’t unusual. There was also plenty of discussion — some of it surprisingly technical — about why China, which struggles in most team ball sports, is strong specifically in volleyball, with many posts pointing to whether a given sport rewards height rather than any simple theory about national strength. Comments mocking players’ looks or veering into race or politics have been excluded from this article.

  • MORE STAR’s Karin Suzuki and Rushia Yamamoto Depart — 5ch: “Same-Day Exit Feels Like an Underground Idol Thing”

The official site for MORE STAR, a group under Asobi System’s idol project “Kawalabo,” announced that Karin Suzuki and Rushia Yamamoto, both of whom had been on medical leave, left the group as of September 22, 2026. Management cited health issues, but thread posters — noting that one of the members had already been off activities for several months — speculated it might be tied to the group’s dating rules. Posts also pointed out the popularity gap with Kawalabo’s other groups and MORE STAR’s low name recognition as a later addition to the lineup, with opinions split on the real cause.

Regarding members Karin Suzuki and Rushia Yamamoto, who have been on medical leave: after repeated discussions with them about their future activities in light of their ongoing health issues, it has been decided that both will leave MORE STAR effective today, September 22.

The addition of "Produce 101 girl" Haruka Sakuraba: Sakuraba, who'd built a passionate following on the audition show PRODUCE 101 JAPAN THE GIRLS, joined and instantly pulled in attention from hardcore idol fans. The debut single's TikTok boom: on top of the members' individual reach, the catchy choreography and hook of the debut single "Is It Not Okay to Just Be Cute?" blew up on social media. Kawalabo's probably fine with dating.
Otherwise they wouldn't say they want members to keep working even after marriage.

    Background and Points of Debate

Kawalabo is a newer idol project from Asobi System that runs several groups at once, including Fruits Zipper and Cutie Street. MORE STAR is one of the newer additions and has repeatedly been noted on the thread as trailing the earlier groups in name recognition. The official announcement attributes this departure solely to “health issues,” but on 5ch, users pointed to the fact that one of the two members had already been off activities for several months and speculated that a personal relationship with a fan may have been the real reason. This remains pure speculation from an anonymous message board — management has made no statement about dating or any rule violation. Posts about Kawalabo’s dating policy were also split between “banned” and “quietly tolerated,” suggesting enforcement may vary by group, though again this is not officially confirmed information.

  • First Time at Ramen Kamukura: 5ch Calls It a ‘New Sensation Built Around the Soup’

A thread popped up on 5ch’s “Anything Live” board (なんでも実況G) started by someone visiting the Osaka-born ramen chain Kamukura for the first time. Photo after photo showed off its mild, milky-white soup loaded with napa cabbage, and opinions split — some called it “surprisingly pricey for what it looks like” or “something you could just recreate at home.” Others, though, praised it as a genuinely different experience, calling it “a new kind of ramen built around the soup” and “a sensibility you just don’t find in the Kanto region.” The thread stayed lively throughout, circling around one central question: what exactly is Kamukura?

    I kind of get that
Precisely because the soup's so good, it ends up feeling like the broth you finish off a hot pot with

If they punched the soup up to match the noodles better, they'd lose that mellow, deep flavor that makes it "Kamukura"
    It's a tough balance

    89AnonymousSep 22, 2026 21:26
    Re: #86
I mean, it's basically just noodles for finishing off a hot pot

    Background and Talking Points

Kamukura is a ramen chain founded in Osaka in 1986, known for pairing a mild soy-sauce-based flavor with a milky-white (paitan) soup slow-simmered with napa cabbage and bean sprouts. It stands apart from the typical rich tonkotsu or shoyu ramen, and because the soup takes center stage, it’s easy to come away thinking “this feels more like the noodles you finish off a hot pot with than actual ramen.” In the thread, opinions split between people praising this uniqueness as “a new set of values” and those calling it “a homestyle taste for the price” — a divide rooted in Kamukura’s own distinctive concept from the start. Note that “Kinryu,” mentioned elsewhere in the discussion, is a separate ramen chain known around the Dotonbori area, with different shops and a different flavor from Kamukura.

    Background and Key Points

Mezzo Piano is a girls’ clothing brand aimed mainly at elementary schoolers, so a VTuber collaboration was always a combination likely to draw comments about a mismatch between fanbase and brand image. It’s a fairly unusual move for Shigure Ui herself to flatly call it “inappropriate,” effectively speaking on behalf of a brand that’s in no position to say so directly. There was no direct back-and-forth about this particular topic within the thread itself, but a related debate flared up in parallel over whether Blue Archive is “already a dead franchise,” with pushback against judging a series purely by current popularity. The largest volume of posts, though, centered on BanG Dream, with fans mostly trading updates like impressions from the Morfonica concert and figure preorder reports — a very typical mix for this kind of livestream discussion thread.

  • Tsubaki Factory’s Yasumi Tanimoto: The ‘Beloved Leader’ in Her 10th Year — 5ch: “She’s Basically Got Zero Haters”

On 5ch’s “Morning Coffee” thread, posters discussing Yasumi Tanimoto, leader of Tsubaki Factory, called her “a rare type of member even by Hello! Project’s long history.” While she isn’t seen as particularly strong in singing or dancing, the thread praised her overwhelming stage presence, her looks, and the long-running affection fans have shown her over the years. At the same time, some posters were harsher, arguing that after 10 years in the group she should have improved her skills by now, and some even named her as one reason the group has struggled to break out. The thread lit up over the bigger question of whether an idol’s value should be measured by skill or by popularity.

    1AnonymousSep 22, 2026 20:12
You can't sum her up with a singing score or a dancing score, and yet she's got real presence.
In the end, an idol's worth comes down a lot to stuff you just can't put a number on.
    4AnonymousSep 22, 2026 20:16
She knows full well that if she quits, she's got nothing left, right?
    6AnonymousSep 22, 2026 20:17
She's in Hello! Project, but her singing's bad and her dancing's bad — and yet she's survived 10 years on pure weirdo energy and good looks alone.

    24AnonymousSep 22, 2026 20:25

    25AnonymousSep 22, 2026 20:25
She sits right on the line between "serious" and "bit," and that balance is just perfect.
    26AnonymousSep 22, 2026 20:25
If she were actually a great singer with a ton of lines, she'd be getting bashed for it instead.
    It's a delicate balance.
    27AnonymousSep 22, 2026 20:25

    28AnonymousSep 22, 2026 20:25
Lately she's gotten more vocal parts and honestly grown into a solid singer.
    29AnonymousSep 22, 2026 20:26
Realistically she's the one to blame for Tsubaki's slump, but since Tsubaki never even came close to breaking out, nobody calls her on it.

    Re: #29
Among the current original members, Tanimoto's the only one with a clean record, though…
    30AnonymousSep 22, 2026 20:26
But that overwhelming character and standing of hers came out of surviving brutal criticism. Her groupmates trashed her, and with no real skills, even the "dd" (fans who support multiple idols rather than having one favorite) didn't view her favorably for years. She endured all that to become the Yasumi Tanimoto she is today.

    Background and Talking Points

Hello! Project groups tend to keep members for a long time, and it’s not unusual for founding members to stay active for years — but it’s rare for someone to hold the exact same unshaken position for around a decade. Yasumi Tanimoto is one such veteran, and the thread treated her as a textbook case of “skill evaluation” and “fan support” not necessarily lining up. The view that an idol’s worth can’t be measured by singing and dancing ability alone — that an approachable personality and a stable presence on stage are just as important — is a point often raised across idol culture generally, not just within Hello! Project. That said, some posters in the thread noted that her singing has actually improved recently now that she’s getting more vocal parts, so it’s worth keeping in mind that framing her purely as “a veteran whose skills never improved” may not quite match where things stand today.

*This article was compiled by excerpting and summarizing the 5ch (Hello! Project) thread “Isn’t Yasumi Tanimoto a pretty rare type of member even for Hello! Project’s whole history?“.

  • Supermarket Workers Past and Present Spill the Real Talk on Every Department — 5ch: ‘Big Chains Even Have Cafeterias and Lots of Cute Coworkers’

A thread titled “Anyone here who’s worked or is working at a supermarket?” went up on 5ch (Newsspeed VIP), drawing a stream of stories from former and current employees. Posters described what the job actually looks like in departments like produce, meat, deli, and grocery, the truth about taste-testing (and sneaking bites) on the job, claims that store managers can pull in an annual salary of 7–8 million yen, and how much part-time coworker relationships can make or break the job. Meanwhile, some posts noted that big chains treat staff well, with proper lockers and even staff cafeterias, sparking discussion about the gap between company sizes.

    Re: #145
Big chains really do have that stuff dialed in.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Supermarkets are among the retail businesses most likely to stay open 365 days a year, a practice generally attributed to their role as everyday infrastructure for shoppers and concerns about lost sales from closing. The store manager salary figures cited in the thread (7–8 million yen a year) and the differences in treatment between departments vary widely by chain size and region, so it’s worth keeping in mind that individual experiences don’t necessarily reflect the industry as a whole. Supermarkets also tend to rely more heavily on part-time and casual staff than many other industries, and this structure — where on-the-job relationships heavily shape how workable the job feels — likely underlies the thread’s back-and-forth about “part-time aunties.” Shop-floor customs like staff taste-testing or discounts on out-of-spec items also vary by store and company policy, so they can’t really be generalized either.

  • Is Hello! Project Leaning Baseball? 5ch: ‘Admitting You Like Soccer Is a Risk’

In a thread on 5ch’s Hello! Project board “Morning Coffee,” discussion heated up over which members are “soccer people” versus “baseball people.” Posters piled on examples one after another — Asami Konno and Rika Ishikawa both married pro baseball players, and Yuuri Sato’s and Reon Inoue’s families are said to be baseball fans too — while others argued that “openly liking soccer hurts your popularity,” sparking debate over why Hello! Project skews toward baseball. The second half of the thread also included a promo for a talk event bringing together idols who support J.League clubs.

    Background and Key Points

Hello! Project’s ties to baseball are said to have deepened after Mai Satoda married pitcher Masahiro Tanaka (then with the Rakuten Eagles) in 2012, and both Asami Konno and Rika Ishikawa have also married former pro baseball players. Soccer, by contrast, has a much thinner connection — Morning Musume once ran a futsal team called “Gatas,” but these days it’s members like Yuuri Sato and Reon Inoue who openly identify as baseball fans. Several posters in the thread claimed that “openly liking soccer hurts your popularity,” but it’s worth noting this isn’t based on any survey or data — it’s an anecdotal impression from the board. The thread also included posts disparaging specific members’ looks or conduct by name; since these couldn’t be verified, they’ve been left out of this article.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project) thread “⚽ The Soccer-Loving Hello! Project Members Strike Back 🦶💥.”

  • Chairman Naoki Yamazaki to Yuuki Sato: “Your Own Songs Aren’t Selling — Why Are You Dancing to Other People’s?”

At a fan club event for Morning Musume OG Yuuki Sato (Osaka, September 22, 2026), Naoki Yamazaki — the chairman overseeing Hello! Project’s Juice=Juice and other groups — remarked, “Your own songs aren’t selling, so is this really the time to be dancing to other people’s songs?” The comment set off a buzz on 5ch. Sato had been posting TikTok dance videos set to other artists’ songs, and reportedly stopped updating the account after the remark. The thread split between those who see TikTok cover videos as an entry point for promotion and those siding with the chairman’s view that her own songs should come first.

And so Ma-chan (Sato's nickname) stopped updating TikTok

    7AnonymousSep 22, 2026 19:55
Guess that means they still think there's room for her to sell (lol)
    8AnonymousSep 22, 2026 19:55
Wow, the chairman still gets this hands-on, huh (lol)
    13AnonymousSep 22, 2026 19:56
The company's footing all these bills, and she's dancing to other people's songs instead of her own — of course he'd want to say something.
    14AnonymousSep 22, 2026 19:56
Isn't that just how TikTok works?
Of course promoting your own songs matters too, but
the reason Morning Musume's social media always feels so "Showa-era" (old-fashioned) —
is that because of Yama-chan's influence?
    15AnonymousSep 22, 2026 19:57
He's the one who has them cover old nostalgia hits in the first place.
    17AnonymousSep 22, 2026 19:57
Rena Tanaka, for instance, isn't allowed to put out her own songs, so she's kept going viral with covers instead and now has 600,000 followers —
which just confirms Yama-chan won't let her release anything because he doesn't approve of her.
    19AnonymousSep 22, 2026 19:57
So basically every Up-Front talent besides Juice=Juice should just quit TikTok?
    22AnonymousSep 22, 2026 19:58

    38AnonymousSep 22, 2026 20:01

    43AnonymousSep 22, 2026 20:03

    45AnonymousSep 22, 2026 20:03
She once posted a TikTok vlog-style video of herself shopping at Coach and Four (a Hokkaido book-and-lifestyle store chain), using one of her own songs as the background music,
but it got taken down — probably because the agency said something.
Her video using her own song got deleted, so of course she ended up dancing to other people's songs instead…
    46AnonymousSep 22, 2026 20:03
Then the agency should hurry up and make her a song that actually sells.

    59AnonymousSep 22, 2026 20:05

    62AnonymousSep 22, 2026 20:05
Well, but think about it — if Yuuki Sato were a first-year rookie, dancing to other songs to get attention would make sense.
But she's in her 16th year.
Management, including her manager, should be having her do her own songs or Morning Musume songs first.
The chairman's call takes priority over everything else.

Guess Yama-chan doesn't really get how much promotional power TikTok has.
    64AnonymousSep 22, 2026 20:06
I get being frustrated that she's not selling, but that's not the right target, Chairman.
    65AnonymousSep 22, 2026 20:06
Well, playing TikToker isn't going to accomplish much anyway.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

In recent years within Hello! Project, TikTok cover-dance videos have become a primary tool for individual members to build recognition — Rena Tanaka is a case in point, racking up hundreds of thousands of followers on cover-song views despite being in a position where she can’t release her own music. Up-Front, meanwhile, wants to prioritize promoting the songs on Yuuki Sato’s own label, and the chairman’s remarks appear to be this friction surfacing publicly. The thread split between those with an on-the-ground sense that TikTok functions as an “entry point to the mainstream,” and those taking a management-first view that “if the company is footing the bill, its own songs should come first” — with many in the latter camp pointing out the inconsistency, given that Hello! Project itself has repeatedly featured other artists’ songs in Music Station cover segments and at its own concerts. It’s also worth noting that Yuuki Sato debuted in 2010 and is a 16-year veteran, which raises the question of whether promotional tactics suited to a rookie are even appropriate here.

  • Kojima’s Nintendo-Pitch Tweet Ignites Viral “Pony” Meme War

A post on X (formerly Twitter) claiming that Hideo Kojima approached Nintendo about funding and technical cooperation on motion-capture and face-mapping technology for a new cross-media IP — supposedly met with Nintendo replying “What’s motion capture?” — became a hot topic on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. Even though Nintendo has no actual stake in the matter, the fact that its name got dragged into the post sparked debate in the thread over “why Nintendo always gets brought up.” Discussion also spread to the origin of “Pony,” a derogatory nickname used overseas for PlayStation loyalists.

    "I love video games!"

Background and key points of this discussion

On overseas forums and social media, “Pony” is used as a derogatory term to mock PlayStation loyalists, much like “Goki” (roach) is used in Japan — without knowing this context, the exchange at the center of this story is hard to make sense of. It started from a post claiming Hideo Kojima approached Nintendo for funding and motion-capture technology support for a new cross-media IP, built around a joke that framed Nintendo’s reply as curt and clueless. In the thread, opinions split over why Nintendo — which has nothing to do with the matter — got dragged into it, with some offering the analysis that Nintendo, being tied to its own hardware, makes an easy target since it rarely pushes back, while others saw it as simply an extension of long-standing rivalry. Note that the original post was made on X (formerly Twitter), and the material behind this article does not confirm whether a Community Note has verified its accuracy.

*This article is compiled as an excerpt/summary from the 5ch Hardware/Industry (Geha) board thread “[Sad News] Pony Stages a Puppet Show to Troll Nintendo, Ends Up Humiliating Himself.”

  • Mixed Reactions to “I Can’t Stand Idols Outside Hello! Project” — 5ch: “As a Genre, Hello! Project Is Basically Enka”

A thread titled “I really can’t stand female idols outside of Hello! Project,” posted on 5ch’s Morning Musume-related board (nicknamed “Ōkami,” or “the Wolf board”), drew a wave of reactions. The original poster complained about other groups’ “put-on voices” and Nogizaka46’s “synthetic-sounding unison vocals,” and while plenty of replies agreed, others pushed back, suggesting it’s “not that you can’t stand them, you’re just not interested,” or calmly compared it to how rock, jazz, and baseball fans all have different tastes — “different genres just mean different values.” The thread ultimately turned into a clash between people criticizing the Wolf board’s notorious “elitism” and those defending it.

The more you learn about it, the more you notice how weird it is that you can't tell who's actually singing.

Wait, Sayashi has a younger sister?
    23AnonymousSep 22, 2026 18:59
So it's not that you're uninterested — you genuinely can't stand them?

    Ozechii's favorite: Blackpink.

You're into this kind of thing?
    Such a modern kid.

But those groups have turned into a massive market though.

That "Itomomo" old-timer is full of hot air.
Talking like they outsell Nogizaka46 or something.

Rock fans: "I really can't stand live shows that don't play the songs exactly like the CD."
Jazz/fusion fans: "I really can't stand fans who only care whether you played it note-for-note like the CD."
Baseball fans: "I really can't stand any sport that isn't baseball."

Every genre has its own values, so there's no end to this kind of thing.

    Re: #39
Rock fans are the ones who'd be disappointed if a live show sounded exactly like the studio version, no?
    41AnonymousSep 22, 2026 19:25
Isn't it fine if everyone just sticks to their own lane?
Though I don't get people who claim they can't stand it but are always on the Wolf board trashing Hello! Project anyway.
    42AnonymousSep 22, 2026 19:25
Hello! Project can't even crack the top 10 in idol concert attendance these days — pathetic.
Their flagship group Morning Musume gets outdrawn even by Kawara Lab's second-string group lol.
    49AnonymousSep 22, 2026 19:31
I think you should just support whatever you personally like.
I'm the type who can't get interested in something just because it's "buzzing" and someone recommends it to me.
If anything, when people push that stuff on me I just think, "this person has no eye for quality."

    > "this person has no eye for quality"

Do you realize that makes you the minority here?
Hello! Project is the real relic idol group that's been left behind by the times lol.
At this rate it'll probably be genuinely dead in another 10 years.
    50AnonymousSep 22, 2026 19:32
I'm fine just watching other female idol groups normally, but I often find I can't stand it once I actually listen to the singing.
    54AnonymousSep 22, 2026 19:36
    Re: #50
Hello! Project's singing style is the weirdest one of all, you know.
    59AnonymousSep 22, 2026 19:40
    Re: #54
Mumbling your way through a song kind of counts as not really singing, doesn't it.

What I can't stand is the mumbly singing or that weird put-on voice.

Realistically, Hello! Project is the one the general public can't stand and has zero interest in.

It's exactly this type of person who goes around slandering idols outside of Hello! Project.

    Re: #61
    I'm not.
I won't tolerate slander against anyone — including people like you.

    Background and Key Points

Hello! Project is a long-running idol production project home to groups like Morning Musume, and its fan board on 5ch is nicknamed “Ōkami” (the Wolf board). That board has a history of being criticized by fans of other groups as having a strong sense of “elitism,” and this thread’s backlash against the “can’t stand them” comment follows that same pattern. Opinions in the thread split over whether the dislike stems from genuine discomfort with certain singing styles (unison vocals, put-on voices) or is simply a lack of interest in other genres — no clear consensus emerged. It’s also worth noting that claims about attendance numbers or CD sales are personal impressions without cited sources, not actual statistics. As the rock, jazz, and baseball fan comparisons illustrate, differing values across genres are nothing unusual, and this kind of “rejection of other genres” isn’t unique to idol culture.
