  • Lucas: “I planned to make 3 more Star Wars films” — 5ch: “Just finish Clone Wars already”

George Lucas revealed on a US CBS program that he had originally planned to make three more “Star Wars” films of his own conception. He said these would have been different from the sequel trilogy (Episodes 7-9) that Disney ultimately produced. Lucas stepped back from directing after 2005’s “Episode III,” and has had no involvement in production since selling Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012. On 5ch, his comments sparked a wave of posts reflecting on the series as a whole — debating the merits of the original trilogy, prequel trilogy, and sequel trilogy, and whether the films are best watched in release order or chronological order.

    September 25, 2026

George Lucas revealed on the US CBS program “Sunday Morning” that he had planned to make three more “Star Wars” films. Separate from the sequel trilogy (Episodes 7-9) that Disney produced starting in 2015, he apparently had three films of his own in mind.

The last film Lucas directed was 2005’s “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.” He stepped back from directing after completing the prequel trilogy (Episodes 1-3), which ran from 1999. In 2012, he sold Lucasfilm to Disney for $4 billion (roughly ¥630 billion at current exchange rates), and has not been involved in the sequel trilogy since.

Is there no thought of remaking 4-6?
I think it would draw quite a crowd.

Background and Key Points of Discussion

Star Wars began with Episode 4 in 1977, and the series as a whole is treated as one story spanning nine films across three trilogies: the original trilogy (4-6), the prequel trilogy (1-3), and the sequel trilogy (7-9). Lucas directed only up through the prequel trilogy; after he sold Lucasfilm to Disney for roughly ¥630 billion in 2012, the sequel trilogy was made by a different director and writing team, resulting in a story that diverged from what Lucas himself had envisioned. On the thread, opinions were split over how the prequel trilogy’s reputation has shifted between its original release and today, and over whether new viewers should watch the films in release order or chronological order. Note that the claim in post #16 that “Lucas is a Hungarian-born Jew” appears to be a mix-up with a different, similarly-named person (the philosopher György Lukács), and is not a verified part of Lucas’s actual biography.

  • Former Johnny’s Could Vanish Entirely from NHK’s Kohaku Song Contest — STARTO Reportedly Skipping Entries

The possibility has emerged that STARTO Entertainment (the new name for the former Johnny’s) will field zero acts at this year’s NHK Kohaku Song Contest. According to a Bunshun report, relations between the agency and NHK had been thawing since the founder’s sexual-abuse scandal broke in 2023 — but an incident this past June hardened the agency’s distrust of NHK, prompting it to ask record labels not to enter any of its talent. On 5channel’s Hello! Project board, the report sparked discussion about which up-and-coming groups might fill the vacated slots, and the behind-the-scenes maneuvering between agencies over Kohaku spots.

STARTO Entertainment May End Up with Zero Acts at “NHK Kohaku”

“Three years after the founder’s sexual-abuse scandal, relations between NHK and STARTO Entertainment had been heading toward a thaw. But since an incident in June, the agency has hardened its stance. At this rate, the number of STARTO groups appearing at Kohaku will be zero.”

V6 probably never even got to appear, right?

    Background and Key Points

Appearing on Kohaku isn’t something artists apply for directly — it’s their record label that submits the request to NHK, meaning the agency’s wishes shape things right from the entry stage. Old Johnny’s has been steadily scaling back its Kohaku presence since the founder’s sexual-abuse scandal broke in 2023, and some in the thread recalled around five groups appearing before the scandal. Cases like King & Prince — under an agency contract rather than signed directly to STARTO itself — complicate the picture, leaving it genuinely unclear how far the agency’s influence actually reaches. The thread split between critics saying the agency has been “shamelessly overexposed since TV welcomed it back” and defenders arguing “it’s still in demand because nothing else can replace it” — even opinions on old Johnny’s popularity itself didn’t line up. Note that the negotiation details covered here reflect the situation as of the Bunshun report; as always, the actual Kohaku lineup won’t be confirmed until the official announcement in December.

  • Panasonic to End Retail Car Navigation Production — 5ch Reacts: ‘Having a Car Navi Means NHK’s Fee Collectors Will Come for You’

Panasonic has announced it will end production of consumer car navigation systems, closing the book on a business that ran for more than 30 years. The move comes against the backdrop of free smartphone navigation apps becoming widespread, with dedicated car navi units long criticized for their high-cost structure — map updates every few years that can run tens of thousands of yen. On 5ch, threads buzzed with questions about phone navi’s data usage, heat issues, and GPS accuracy, while others pointed out that this only ends retail sales and isn’t a withdrawal from supplying automakers directly, leading to split opinions on how to interpret the news.

If it's hooked up to the factory display audio unit, it seems to pull data from the car itself —
there are also apps that just track movement normally on their own.

    Re: #159
The major apps use the phone's own sensors to estimate position.

I already switched to phone navi so I wouldn't know, but car navi's map-update fees used to be brutally expensive —
has that situation improved any these days?
    177AnonymousSep 25, 2026 18:21
    Re: #164
    Not even a little.
Still ridiculously expensive, and updates only come once a year, or twice a year at best.
There's no way it beats phone navi on update frequency.

This is just the end of retail car navi units, so factory-installed ones from automakers should still be supported, right? Can't speak for aftermarket units bought at an electronics store, though.
    218AnonymousSep 25, 2026 18:27
These days automakers bundle car navi map updates into their aftersales subscription service, which basically forces you onto the factory navi.

    Re: #225
Doesn't seem much different, really — once you start moving, it figures out your direction.
That said, a dedicated car navi screen is easier to read than phone navi. It's mainly that searching for places is more convenient on a phone.

    Background and Points of Discussion

Panasonic’s withdrawal from the consumer car navi market can be seen as one example of a broader shift rippling through the entire car navigation industry. The remaining domestic makers of dedicated, built-in car navi units have narrowed down to a handful of companies — Pioneer, Kenwood, Alpine — all of which face competition from free smartphone navigation apps. Dedicated car navi units often cost tens of thousands of yen for map updates every few years, and complaints about this cost burden came up repeatedly in the thread. At the same time, this announcement only concerns withdrawal from the “consumer retail” segment, not the end of Panasonic’s supply of factory-installed navi systems to automakers — a distinction that’s easy to misread. Some replies in the thread pointed out that “this isn’t a full withdrawal,” suggesting headlines alone don’t convey the full picture of the business. The structural weakness of costly map updates that dedicated units have long carried can also be seen as a factor pushing the shift toward smartphone navigation.

  • Do kids today understand “turn the dial”? Asahi Shimbun’s phone-language piece sparks 5ch pushback: “Nobody said that even in the Showa era”

A serialized feature in the Asahi Shimbun investigated whether the idiom “turn the dial” (used to mean “make a phone call”) still makes sense to today’s elementary schoolers, who have never touched a rotary phone. The piece found that even without ever seeing the real thing, kids could correctly guess what it meant — and on 5ch, this set off a wave of posts reminiscing about spinning the dial on old black phones. At the same time, some pushed back, arguing that “people didn’t actually talk that way even back in the Showa era” — a rebuttal that talked past the article’s actual point (whether the phrase is *understood* today) versus whether it was ever *actually used*, leaving the discussion somewhat at cross purposes.

There's a type of lock where you turn the dial right to line up a number, then turn it left to line up another.

Background and key points of this discussion

The black rotary phone was the standard home telephone of the Showa era, but it lost its dominant position to push-button phones through the 1970s–80s. Even so, the phrase “turn the dial” stuck around for a long time as a stand-in expression for “make a call,” and the article appears to be testing whether that metaphor still lands with generations who’ve never seen an actual rotary phone. What split the thread was less about the article’s actual question — “does it still get understood?” — and more a separate claim that “people didn’t really talk that way even in the Showa era to begin with.” That’s less a rebuttal of the article’s findings than a point about the gap between a set phrase and how people actually spoke, and some posters argued it missed what the article was actually testing. Worth noting too: much like how the save icon still looks like a floppy disk long after floppy disks vanished, the “visual metaphor” of the rotary dial outliving the object itself is far from a phone-only phenomenon. From there, the thread drifted off into other shared “Showa memories” — regional TV station abbreviations, old electronics-store jingles, and more.

  • Hello! Project Trainee Airi Ohno Earns Vegetable Certifications — 5ch: ‘Sounds Like She’s Declaring She Wants to Join Angerme’

    Hello! Background and Discussion Points

The “Vegetable Sommelier”-type certifications Ohno earned are private certifications that can be studied for through correspondence courses, not state-recognized qualifications. Within Hello! Project, there’s precedent for members touting personal certifications as a special skill — Yui Murata of Tsubaki Factory, for instance, goes by the title “Vegetable Sommelier” — and Ohno’s announcement was seen as following that same pattern. On the thread, opinions split between a favorable reading (“maybe this is a stepping stone toward a future promotion or move to a senior group”) and a skeptical one (“do these private certifications actually mean anything in practice?” / “shouldn’t she be focused on performance first?”). Beyond her own social media post, little else is known about the certifications themselves, and the reasoning behind earning them — or what effect they’ll have on her future activities — remains unclear for now.

An article claiming a former Rockstar staffer said the Switch 2 version of GTA6 “doesn’t make sense” went viral on X, sparking a wave of reactions on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. However, posters pointed out that the person who made the comment was a game designer rather than a developer, and that he left Rockstar back in 2020 — before Switch 2 dev kits were even distributed to third-party studios — which put the credibility of the claim itself in question. The discussion also expanded to cover theories about the Switch 2’s supposed lack of horsepower, how well the game would suit controller-only play, and the long-running overseas perception that “Nintendo is for kids,” leaving opinions split.

    >In Rockstar's case, people go out of their way to buy a console just to play their games.

No way, don't be an idiot.
If that were true, Rockstar could release their own console, make their games exclusive to it, and sell tens or hundreds of millions of units. Why don't they? Because nobody buys a console just for GTA, that's why.

Can you even read the name of this thread?

Background and key points of this discussion

The person who called the Switch 2 version of GTA6 “something that doesn’t make sense” was ex-Rockstar staffer Jeremy Hartvick — but as reply #18 points out, he’s a game designer, and he left Rockstar back in 2020, before dev hardware was even distributed to third-party studios. That means he likely wasn’t in a position to know the Switch 2’s actual specs or the state of its dev kits at the time, and the thread split over how much weight to give his comment. It’s also worth noting, as 5ch posters pointed out, that a Switch 2 version of GTA6 hasn’t even been officially announced — the final call rests with publisher Take-Two. The discussion also expanded beyond the technical feasibility of a port into a broader question of industry perception: whether the long-standing overseas image of “Nintendo = for kids” is shaping developers’ decisions. Some pushed back on the performance concerns too, citing GTA5’s track record running on both the PS3 and the original Switch.

  • Japan Volleyball Association Statement: ‘Athletes Are a Real Person on the Other Side of the Screen’ — Responds to Online Abuse

On September 25, the Japan Volleyball Association posted a statement on its official website titled “A Request Regarding Harassment of Players.” The statement calls on fans to understand and be considerate of players as “real people on the other side of the screen” when it comes to abuse via social media, and reveals that some players are experiencing anxiety and fear. The statement appears to have been prompted by a wave of comments about players’ conduct and appearance following a straight-sets loss to host nation China at the Asian Games. Reactions on 5ch were split: some pointed to the heavy burden of filing disclosure requests (to unmask anonymous posters), while others pushed back, arguing the association was “trying to silence criticism by calling it harassment” — dividing opinion over where criticism ends and abuse begins.

On the 25th, the Japan Volleyball Association (a public interest incorporated foundation) updated its official website with a statement titled “A Request Regarding Harassment of Players,” calling on fans to show understanding and consideration regarding online harassment directed at players.

The association opened with thanks: “The warm support you all send is a huge source of strength for the players as they stand on the court and compete.” It went on to explain, “Every day, the players build up practice and preparation for each and every moment of the match.

In a match, sometimes they’re able to play exactly as they envisioned, and sometimes the results just don’t come. Even so, the players stand on the court carrying the feelings of their teammates, staff, and everyone cheering for them,” the statement explained.

No matter how much you complain to the platform itself, you might get the same kind of treatment old-school 2channel [the original forum 5ch evolved from] used to dish out, and that's unbearable.
Even though filing disclosure requests (to unmask anonymous posters) has gotten easier, it's still a ton of effort.
And even when you're going to pursue legal action, if you don't put out a warning like this first, the other side can seize on that and fly off the handle.
Laws around online abuse still haven't caught up, which is why all these problems keep boiling over lately.

Nobody can see your supposedly burning desire to get a job either.

Background and Key Points of Debate

When it comes to online harassment, filing a disclosure request to identify anonymous posters is costly and labor-intensive, and legislation hasn’t kept pace. In the thread, alongside voices saying “disclosure is the only way,” there was also an understanding of why fans can’t simply leave it up to platform operators, given how heavy a burden that route is. The statement itself appears to have been prompted by the women’s national volleyball team’s straight-sets loss to host China at the Asian Games, and the thread’s biggest point of contention was where “criticism” crosses over into “harassment.” On the lip balm and earrings worn during the match, opinions split between defending it as protection against dryness and questioning whether players have the luxury to worry about appearance — showing how easily judgments about looks and conduct get tangled up with discussion of the game itself. The conversation also touched on how the women’s team has overtaken the men’s team in prominence in recent years, and comparisons with the criticism culture around other sports like soccer, highlighting how hard it is to draw a line between harassment aimed at individual players and blunt criticism of the sport as a whole.

  • Daisuke Hori’s New Course Costs ¥160,000 a Month — 5ch Reacts: ‘Anyone Dumb Enough to Fall for This Is Beyond Saving’

Daisuke Hori has long been known as an advocate for the “short sleeper” method, coaching people to function on minimal sleep — but this time he’s done a complete about-face, rolling out a ¥160,000-a-month “quality sleep” improvement program. Reaction on 5ch was swift distrust toward a system charging steep fees without any scientific backing, with many pointing out it’s overpriced compared to hiring a professional personal trainer or gym membership. Background and Key Points of This Story

Daisuke Hori previously built a following as an instructor for the “short sleeper” method (training people to get by on very little sleep), a practice that repeatedly drew skepticism over its effectiveness and lack of evidence. The “quality sleep” program now making waves reads almost like the opposite approach, offering standard lifestyle-improvement guidance — stretching, diet management, optimizing your bedroom environment — for a steep monthly fee. The thread’s focus centered on comparing the ¥160,000 price tag to what a professional bodybuilder charges for personal training, alongside skepticism toward guidance based on anecdotal testimonials rather than scientific verification. That said, some commenters admitted the massage techniques themselves seemed to have some real effect, so opinions were mixed. Worth noting: the earlier claims about a “government and police investigation” have no confirmed follow-up here, so they remain an unverified rumor.

I don't listen live, but yeah, it's pure habit at this point
Then again, habit might just be the true nature of radio listening

    Background and Talking Points

Radio ratings surveys mainly rely on respondents self-reporting which programs they listened to, rather than mechanical measurement like with TV ratings, and the thread raised doubts about this methodology — though no one nailed down exactly how it works. Behind this is the broader industry milestone that AM radio is set to end by around 2028 for all commercial stations except some in Hokkaido and Akita, meaning listening via radiko and other internet routes is expected to grow even more prominent going forward. As for TBS Radio’s decline, the thread floated the theory that it stemmed from the ratings survey’s target age range once being wider, but no follow-up report has confirmed this, so it’s worth treating as speculation.

  • Fuji TV President Addresses Harassment Issue on Drama Set: ‘We Will Work to Prevent Recurrence’

On September 25, 2026, Fuji Television held a presidential press conference at its headquarters in Odaiba, Tokyo, addressing the harassment issue reported on the set of its April-season drama ‘Husband and Wife Separate Surnames Detective.’ In July, the network had published the results of an investigation by outside lawyers following reports concerning actor Jiro Sato and a co-star, and apologized to both parties. On 5channel threads, some users blamed the party said to have repeatedly made contact despite being told beforehand ‘don’t confront them,’ while others argued the fault lay with the production side and the co-star’s camp for failing to put the prohibited actions in writing before filming. Many posts also expressed doubt about how effective the president’s pledge to ‘work to prevent recurrence’ would actually be.

Fuji Television held a presidential press conference at the network’s Odaiba, Tokyo headquarters on the 25th, addressing reports of a harassment issue on the set of one of its April-season dramas.

In July, following reports from several weekly magazines, the network published a detailed document based on an outside lawyer’s investigation and findings regarding a series of reports concerning actor Jiro Sato and a co-star involved in its April-season drama ‘Husband and Wife Separate Surnames Detective.’ It apologized to both actors, stating, ‘We apologize for the current situation, which has placed a great burden and emotional strain on both actors.’

He said he'll 'work to prevent recurrence' — he never said he'd actually prevent it.

Sounds like he's implicitly apologizing for how Fuji TV's lawyers handled this.

Rehashing this now doesn't do 'Uji' TV (a mocking nickname for Fuji playing on the word for 'maggot') any good at this point.

Everyone's piling on Fuji TV, but didn't they already say beforehand 'don't go confront them'?
The one who went and did it twice anyway after being told not to is 100% in the wrong, if you ask me.

Before we even get to the dressing-room confrontation, the real issue is the producer never set clear rules about what was off-limits during filming beforehand. Though Hashimoto's side didn't communicate things very clearly either.

The mistake was Fuji's producer misreading Hashimoto's side saying 'we'll leave it to you' as 'you have free rein.'

If you're casting actors who just stick to the script, maybe you don't need to spell out the ground rules in advance.
But if you're casting someone who'll use 'it was improv' as an excuse to get handsy, you'd better set the rules beforehand.

It's because they tried to use it for a spin-off.
They were too slow to cut ties, and they never should have let the director defend him either.
Places like Yahoo comments are full of old people, so you get a lot of harassment apologists there — the 'don't make a fuss over this' type.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Fuji Television’s current leadership took over after the previous president resigned to take responsibility for the 2024 controversy involving Masahiro Nakai, and this press conference drew attention as another crisis response while the network is still working to rebuild trust. The outside lawyers’ investigation report released in July reportedly found that the underlying issue was ambiguity over what physical contact was acceptable between the two actors playing a married couple — meaning this isn’t a simple, clear-cut case of one-sided harassment. Early reporting framed the story as one party being at fault, but Fuji itself apologized to both actors for the ‘great burden and emotional strain’ placed on them, and has not framed it as the fault of only one side. On the thread, voices blaming the party said to have repeatedly made contact without consent were matched by voices criticizing the production side and the co-star’s camp for failing to put the rules in writing before filming, with some pointing out that the pledge to ‘work to prevent recurrence’ offers no concrete plan.
