  • Alcohol’s Fine, Weed Isn’t: 5ch Debates Why

5ch users debated the age-old question of “why is booze okay but weed isn’t?” The thread touched on cannabis’s history in Japanese Shinto rituals and textile use, as well as how postwar regulation began under GHQ occupation. Also discussed was Thailand’s temporary de facto decriminalization of cannabis, which is now facing renewed restrictions after a change in government. Posters traded personal takes on whether alcohol or cannabis is more dangerous, but no consensus was reached.

    Yeah, that's part of it,
and honestly alcohol probably should be banned too,
but humanity's been living alongside alcohol throughout history,
so it's just too late to ban it at this point.
One of humanity's design flaws, really.

Just look at how much cannabis gets used in Shinto rituals and you'll see.
Back in the day they'd throw huge amounts of it into ritual bonfires and everyone would gather around and smoke it.
Up until the Meiji era, "tobacco" basically meant cannabis.

It's just something that's always been around.
Cannabis was around too, but for various reasons it ended up banned, and since it's not exactly essential, the attitude became "fine, we don't need it" — so it's banned outside of medical use.

Right now if you just cause a scene, you spend one night in custody and go home.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Japan’s Cannabis Control Act was enacted in 1948, its origins tangled up with postwar GHQ occupation policy and international narcotics-control treaties — a layered history that can’t be reduced to a simple conspiracy theory. At the same time, it’s true that cannabis (as hemp fiber) has long been used for shimenawa ropes and hemp cloth in Shinto rituals, making it, alongside alcohol, a traditional Japanese resource in its own right. Posters in the thread disagreed over which is more dangerous, alcohol or cannabis, but comparing dependency and accident risk is really something that should be argued from statistics and medical data rather than personal anecdotes — a point where misunderstandings easily creep in. Thailand’s cannabis policy tells a similar cautionary tale: after being effectively decriminalized in 2022, a change of government has since brought renewed moves toward re-regulation, so it can’t simply be filed away as a “legal country.”

  • 47% Accept “Stealth” Price Hikes, But 60% Can’t Forgive “False-Bottom” Packaging

According to a Forbes JAPAN survey, 47% of respondents said they accept ordinary price increases driven by factors like higher raw material costs — but 60% said they “can’t forgive” so-called stealth price hikes, where companies shrink the amount of product while keeping the price the same, especially the tactic of raising a container’s false bottom to make the contents look smaller. The story lit up 5channel’s News Speed+ board (a current-events forum on 5ch, Japan’s largest anonymous bulletin-board site), with posters piling on familiar examples — shrinking potato chip bags, the two different fill weights of Bourbon’s Alfort chocolate biscuits, the thin rice layer in 7-Eleven bento boxes. But the thread soon split over “what actually counts as a false bottom in the first place,” turning into a debate that a simple net-weight label alone couldn’t settle.

What even IS the definition of a "false bottom" in the first place — how is it distinguished from a shape designed to prevent uneven microwave heating?
What condition counts as a false bottom? If it's a sloped type, at what angle does it become one? If it's a stepped type, what height ratio counts? Until that's pinned down, you can't actually judge whether something is a false bottom or not.

Plenty of people watch their calories, but hardly anyone checks the net weight every single time lol

Background and key points of the discussion

The numbers here come from a consumer survey reported by Forbes JAPAN. It found that resistance runs stronger toward “stealth price hikes” — shrinking the contents while holding the sticker price steady, especially the tactic of raising a container’s bottom to make the contents look smaller — than toward ordinary price increases where the hike is stated outright. On the thread, posters offered concrete, everyday examples of quantities being quietly trimmed in ways easy to miss — potato chips, the rice portion in bento boxes, differing fill weights between versions of the same snack — while others pushed back that “without a clear definition of a false bottom, there’s no way to judge what actually qualifies,” pitting gut-level outrage against calls for a rigorous standard. Underlying it all is distrust not so much of price increases themselves as of the practice of shrinking products without anyone noticing — and the discussion also touched on how closely (or not) consumers actually check net-weight labels themselves.

  • FRUITS ZIPPER: Fans Sense Something “Off” as Amane Tsukiashi Alone Doesn’t Join Hands in Group Shot

Ruka Nakagawa of the seven-member idol group FRUITS ZIPPER made her solo debut on September 18, performing her debut song “Asa ni Naranaide” (“Don’t Let Morning Come”) on “THE FIRST TAKE.” After the performance, a scene showed the members gathering and joining hands — but Amane Tsukiashi was the only one who didn’t join the circle or take anyone’s hand, sparking talk among fans about the “off” feeling it gave. Reactions on 5ch split between those who saw it as simple individual quirk and those who pointed to Tsukiashi’s background as a former HKT48 member as a sign of distance from the rest.

FRUITS ZIPPER, the hugely popular seven-member idol group that also appeared on last year’s 76th NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen (year-end song contest), saw member Ruka Nakagawa (29), who represents the group’s “purple” color, make her solo debut on September 18. That same day, she performed her debut song for the first time on “THE FIRST TAKE,” the YouTube channel where guests sing in a single unedited take.

The debut single is titled “Asa ni Naranaide” (“Don’t Let Morning Come”), a groove-heavy R&B track that has also been chosen as the ending theme for “Mame to Mugi,” the TV Tokyo drama co-starring Asuka Saito (28) and Mio Tomita (26) set to premiere October 2 — a sign that Nakagawa is likely to draw even more attention as a solo artist going forward.

The solo debut is said to have been a long-held wish for Nakagawa. Just before her one-take performance on “THE FIRST TAKE,” she commented, “I love singing, and at some point I started dreaming of becoming someone who could deliver songs solo too. Now that I’ve made my solo debut, that dream has come true today. I’d be happy if my dream could become a small part of someone’s happiness who listens to it.” And after finishing the song, a surprise was waiting for Nakagawa.

That other Nakagawa is a big star in Indonesia these days.

    Background and Talking Points

FRUITS ZIPPER was formed mainly around members who came up through “Kawara Lab” (a reader-model scouting project), and Amane Tsukiashi stands out for having been a member of HKT48 before joining. Within the thread, this difference in background was repeatedly cited as grounds for speculating about a “wall” between her and the other members. At the same time, many pointed out that with seven members, some difference in how well people click is only natural — and the thread split along the line of whether idols should “put on a united front in public” versus whether “personal likes and dislikes should just be accepted.” It’s worth noting that a single moment in a video is thin evidence for concluding there’s bad blood or that someone is being frozen out, and none of those involved have commented on it.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “[Idol] “My heart skipped” — FRUITS ZIPPER’s Ruka Nakagawa: Amane Tsukiashi alone doesn’t join hands… the “off” feeling fans sensed in the members’ group shot [Ailuropoda melanoleuca★].”

  • Voice actress Sumire Uesaka files police report over threats — 5ch: “Guess she caught the eye of a weirdo”

The talent agency representing voice actress Sumire Uesaka (34) has announced that it filed a criminal complaint with police over malicious threats. Multiple extremely malicious emails containing threats of harm had been sent to the agency, and on the night of September 14 it was disclosed that they had consulted with the Shokatsu Police Station. On the 15th Uesaka herself refrained from posting online, and on the 16th her appearance at the “Kyoto International Manga Anime Fair 2026” was called off. On the night of the 24th, it was reported that the criminal complaint had now formally been filed. On 5ch, users traded speculation about who might be behind it, doubts over whether the complaint would actually lead to an arrest, and mentions of other voice actresses who have suffered similar harassment.

    9/25 (Fri) 7:32

Voice actress Sumire Uesaka’s official X account was updated by staff on the night of the 24th, reporting that a criminal complaint had been filed over the threats.

On the night of the 14th, Uesaka’s staff had updated X to disclose that multiple extremely malicious emails containing threats of harm against Uesaka had been sent to her agency, revealing that they were consulting with the Shokatsu Police Station. In a further update on the night of the 15th, staff announced that, to prioritize Uesaka’s safety, she would refrain from posting for the time being. In a post on the 16th, they also announced that her appearance at the “Kyoto International Manga Anime Fair 2026” (19th–20th) would be called off.

Checked her thread over this and it was getting absolutely trashed by trolls, it was scary

Background and key points of this story

Filing a criminal complaint is just the starting point of an investigation — it doesn’t automatically mean charges will be filed or an arrest made. While some in the thread noted “I’ve never seen a case where someone actually got arrested over something like this,” this incident reportedly involved language suggesting her home address had been identified along with what looked like death threats, which may be treated differently from ordinary online abuse. The fact that the agency went as far as halting Uesaka’s own social media activity and pulling her from an event suggests they’re taking the situation seriously. The thread saw both speculation that “an overzealous fan snapped” and posts bringing up the Kyoto Animation arson case, but the article itself contains nothing directly linking the two incidents — that connection remains pure speculation. Harassment and stalking targeting voice actresses has been reported with other performers in the past as well, so this can also be read as a recurring problem within the industry.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News Plus) thread “Voice actress Sumire Uesaka files criminal complaint with police, agency announces — “strict response including legal action” over malicious threats.”

  • Japan’s win over Uruguay draws overseas mockery, fans wince: “Stop, that hits too close to home”

After Japan’s national team beat Uruguay in a friendly match, overseas social media buzzed with sarcastic comments dubbing Japan the “World Champions of Friendlies” — a dig at Japanese football’s habit of underperforming when it actually counts, at the World Cup or Asian Cup. On 5ch, plenty of posters winced right along with it, writing things like “stop, that hits too close to home” and “guilty as charged.” The thread split between people citing Japan’s real wins over Germany and Spain at the World Cup, and others countering with the cold fact that Japan has never won a single World Cup knockout match. Some went further still, floating the cynical theory that invited opponents simply take it easy as a courtesy to keep getting invited back — leaving the thread divided on how much stock to put in friendly-match form.

Even when people say "overseas social media," most of them are commenting without ever watching the match, so it's pointless taking it seriously.

The match itself was basically even — honestly both sides were mediocre.
Uruguay's legs just gave out at the end and they conceded twice.
Japan wasn't strong, wasn't weak, just middling.
    101AnonymousSep 25, 2026 17:06
    Re: #79
The match was even, but you should factor in that Japan was missing several regulars.
If Zion had been in goal, those conceded chances probably wouldn't have happened, and if Ueda had started, they might've been up 2-0 heading into the second-half stretch.
Even in the YouTube comments, Uruguayan fans seem most shocked that they lost to a Japan side playing without its main lineup.
    86AnonymousSep 25, 2026 17:03
Japan's got the money, so they host friendlies at home.
The opponents go easy and lose, hoping to get invited back again.
Japan gets cocky about having "gotten stronger," but they're nothing special at the actual World Cup.
Then comes the bizarre self-defense of "well, we used to lose even friendlies back in the day."
    Back to square one.
    Same pattern, every single time.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Japan’s national team beat Germany and Spain at the 2022 World Cup, but as posters in the thread point out, they still haven’t won a single knockout-stage match, and their most recent major tournament didn’t see them advance far either. The Elo ratings cited in the thread put Japan at 15th, numerically above the 21st-ranked Uruguay they just faced — but Uruguay is a country known for its toughness in actual tournament play, so a simple ranking comparison doesn’t capture everything. Friendlies are arranged as part of national team development and do come with appearance fees as a commercial element, which is part of why the theory that “the invited side isn’t really trying” persists among some fans — though this remains speculation rather than established fact. Both the overseas sarcasm and the self-deprecating jokes on 5ch point to the same underlying phenomenon from different angles: a gap between how Japan performs in friendlies and how it performs when it really matters.

A pectoral-correction support brace, to be precise

    Background and Points of Debate

The remark came from the show’s MC, Tadashi Kakizaki. Some on 5ch mistakenly pegged him as a “TV Tokyo announcer,” but he’s actually a former Nippon Broadcasting announcer who’s now freelance. The backdrop here: the running course around the Imperial Palace has seen a sharp rise in users in recent years, and Tokyo Shimbun and other outlets have repeatedly reported on friction with pedestrians and disputes over lane space. The comment came up as an offhand remark during a segment introducing that coverage — it wasn’t a fact-checked claim, just one cast member’s personal impression while watching footage from the show’s weather camera, which is worth keeping in mind. On the thread, a broadcasting-ethics argument (“should you really say that on public airwaves?”) clashed with a defense (“what’s wrong with just stating the truth?”), and the debate spread without ever really settling. Given the show’s track record of courting controversy for attention, some commenters simply shrugged it off as “just the show’s usual shtick.”

Central League games were played across the circuit on September 25. At Mazda Stadium, the Giants faced the Carp in a showdown, starting Makoto Kadowaki for the first time in about two months, with Darbec, Ohshiro, and Sasaki forming the cleanup trio in hopes of a comeback. Around the same time, Hanshin’s Morishita was hit by a pitch — his 20th of the season, tying him for 8th all-time in NPB history — sending a stir through the stadium. Meanwhile, the Yakult-Chunichi game at Meiji Jingu Stadium turned into a slugfest, with comments flying in the live-thread about the interim manager’s performance, including takes like ‘a 3-3 record would be a solid result.’

    Background and talking points

The Giants have been playing out the season’s final stretch under an ‘interim’ manager following a recent managerial change, and the ‘152’ in the thread title reflects how a new live-thread gets created for every single game, with fans weighing in on the interim skipper’s handling each time. The hit-by-pitch news shared in the thread — Hanshin’s Morishita being plunked for the 20th time this season, tying him for 8th all-time in NPB history — is easy to dismiss as just bad luck, but it’s worth noting he’s closing in on a genuine historical mark. Opinions on the interim manager range toward ‘a 3-3 record would be a solid result,’ though there’s surprisingly little discussion of his actual in-game decisions, with much of the commentary boiling down to just the win-loss tally. An image of the Central League pennant race standings was also shared, and with Hanshin’s title now looking all but decided, the starting lineups suggest several teams are already giving younger players a look down the stretch.

  • Chinese Mobile Games Losing Their Shine in Japan — Genshin, Star Rail Said to Be Slowing Down

A thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” (Anything Live-Commentary) board claimed that Chinese-developed mobile games like Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, and Goddess of Victory: NIKKE are losing their shine in Japan. While some posters recalled logging into Genshin, Star Rail, and NIKKE every single day three years ago, recent comments pointed to Star Rail’s slowdown, a lukewarm Fate collaboration, and cooling reactions to Genshin’s new characters. The thread also branched into debates over whether mobile-only revenue figures tell the whole story, comparisons of character modeling with Uma Musume, and just how much money whales pour into ad-heavy games like Last War.

which kind of freaked me out lol.
But I guess that's about all mobile games actually need, huh.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Genshin Impact launched in 2020, NIKKE in 2022, and Honkai: Star Rail in 2023 — all three were fixtures near the top of Japan’s mobile game charts early on. One important point raised in the thread is that these rankings reflect “mobile-only” revenue: since Genshin and Star Rail also generate significant spending on PC and PlayStation, app store sales charts alone don’t fully capture how popular these games really are. At the same time, the fact that long-running domestic titles like Monster Strike and Puzzle & Dragons continue to hold their top spots points to a market structure in which new releases struggle to build lasting popularity. Ad-driven strategy games like Last War and Whiteout Survival are known for business models propped up by a small segment of big-spending players, which lines up with the thread’s claim that “20,000 yen a month is considered normal spending.” As for why momentum has slowed, posters in the thread offered several different explanations — oversaturation and fatigue, excessive pressure to spend, and the quality of character designs — without settling on any single cause.

  • Lucas: “I planned to make 3 more Star Wars films” — 5ch: “Just finish Clone Wars already”

George Lucas revealed on a US CBS program that he had originally planned to make three more “Star Wars” films of his own conception. He said these would have been different from the sequel trilogy (Episodes 7-9) that Disney ultimately produced. Lucas stepped back from directing after 2005’s “Episode III,” and has had no involvement in production since selling Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012. On 5ch, his comments sparked a wave of posts reflecting on the series as a whole — debating the merits of the original trilogy, prequel trilogy, and sequel trilogy, and whether the films are best watched in release order or chronological order.

    September 25, 2026

George Lucas revealed on the US CBS program “Sunday Morning” that he had planned to make three more “Star Wars” films. Separate from the sequel trilogy (Episodes 7-9) that Disney produced starting in 2015, he apparently had three films of his own in mind.

The last film Lucas directed was 2005’s “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.” He stepped back from directing after completing the prequel trilogy (Episodes 1-3), which ran from 1999. In 2012, he sold Lucasfilm to Disney for $4 billion (roughly ¥630 billion at current exchange rates), and has not been involved in the sequel trilogy since.

I binge-watched it so my memory's hazy, but
the Darth Vader guy fell to the dark side because he feared a future where his wife would die and wanted to change it, right?
Did she end up dying partway through because he fell to the dark side?
Was that whole thing inescapable, like a Möbius strip?
The actor who played Darth Vader was so cool, but Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan ended up way more famous.

That's because Ewan McGregor got famous from Trainspotting.

At the happy ending of the original trilogy's finale (6), I think the people who died showed up as spirits —
and Luke's father was among them, wasn't he?
But in the trilogy made later, that same father turns out to be Darth Vader.

    Re: #75
You're right that the actor playing Darth Vader became Hayden Christensen in the discs made later,
but Darth Vader was Luke's father from the very start.

    Only 4-6 are actually good.
Especially the second one, 5 — that one's intense.
The rest is basically just momentum.
Once something gets that popular, you have no choice but to keep it going.
    Same as Dragon Quest.
    96AnonymousSep 25, 2026 18:50
    Re: #79
Dragon Quest was only good for 1-4.
    From 5 onward it's a garbage game.
    89AnonymousSep 25, 2026 18:45
Is there no thought of remaking 4-6?
I think it would draw quite a crowd.

Background and Key Points of Discussion

Star Wars began with Episode 4 in 1977, and the series as a whole is treated as one story spanning nine films across three trilogies: the original trilogy (4-6), the prequel trilogy (1-3), and the sequel trilogy (7-9). Lucas directed only up through the prequel trilogy; after he sold Lucasfilm to Disney for roughly ¥630 billion in 2012, the sequel trilogy was made by a different director and writing team, resulting in a story that diverged from what Lucas himself had envisioned. On the thread, opinions were split over how the prequel trilogy’s reputation has shifted between its original release and today, and over whether new viewers should watch the films in release order or chronological order. Note that the claim in post #16 that “Lucas is a Hungarian-born Jew” appears to be a mix-up with a different, similarly-named person (the philosopher György Lukács), and is not a verified part of Lucas’s actual biography.

  • Former Johnny’s Could Vanish Entirely from NHK’s Kohaku Song Contest — STARTO Reportedly Skipping Entries

The possibility has emerged that STARTO Entertainment (the new name for the former Johnny’s) will field zero acts at this year’s NHK Kohaku Song Contest. According to a Bunshun report, relations between the agency and NHK had been thawing since the founder’s sexual-abuse scandal broke in 2023 — but an incident this past June hardened the agency’s distrust of NHK, prompting it to ask record labels not to enter any of its talent. On 5channel’s Hello! Project board, the report sparked discussion about which up-and-coming groups might fill the vacated slots, and the behind-the-scenes maneuvering between agencies over Kohaku spots.

STARTO Entertainment May End Up with Zero Acts at “NHK Kohaku”

“Three years after the founder’s sexual-abuse scandal, relations between NHK and STARTO Entertainment had been heading toward a thaw. But since an incident in June, the agency has hardened its stance. At this rate, the number of STARTO groups appearing at Kohaku will be zero.”

Just put out EBiDAN, Junretsu & MONA-KING, SHOW-WA & MATSURI, the Takizawa-affiliated acts, and Atarashii Chizu ("New Map," the ex-SMAP unit) — you flat-out don't need the old Johnny's anymore lol

    Re: #6
Chizu and the Takizawa acts don't even have hit songs, so forcing them on would just be the same kind of favoritism NHK used to show Johnny's

It's really just Snow Man and SixTONES ("Stones") anyway, so as long as EBiDAN and MONA-KING are in, it won't make much difference

So Kohaku works by the record label applying to NHK to get an artist on, not the artist themselves
    Here's the Bunshun article:
"The application window for this year's Kohaku ran from August 17 to September 4, and STARTO asked record labels not to enter any STARTO artists. Right now zero appearances are planned, but NHK is still negotiating with STARTO, hoping to get King & Prince, Aぇ! group, and others to perform."

Since Suo retired, it's unclear how the power dynamics have shifted

V6 probably never even got to appear, right?

    Background and Key Points

Appearing on Kohaku isn’t something artists apply for directly — it’s their record label that submits the request to NHK, meaning the agency’s wishes shape things right from the entry stage. Old Johnny’s has been steadily scaling back its Kohaku presence since the founder’s sexual-abuse scandal broke in 2023, and some in the thread recalled around five groups appearing before the scandal. Cases like King & Prince — under an agency contract rather than signed directly to STARTO itself — complicate the picture, leaving it genuinely unclear how far the agency’s influence actually reaches. The thread split between critics saying the agency has been “shamelessly overexposed since TV welcomed it back” and defenders arguing “it’s still in demand because nothing else can replace it” — even opinions on old Johnny’s popularity itself didn’t line up. Note that the negotiation details covered here reflect the situation as of the Bunshun report; as always, the actual Kohaku lineup won’t be confirmed until the official announcement in December.
