Movie ‘Glory’s Throw Home’ Hits Terrestrial TV — 5ch: ‘¥1.77 Billion Box Office Beat Kimutaku’s Film’

The story

The movie “Glory’s Throw Home,” based on the true story of former Hanshin Tigers outfielder Shintaro Yokota — who died at age 25 — aired on terrestrial TV, sparking a flood of comments on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board. The original book was written while Yokota was still alive, and a TV drama adaptation followed the next year. The thread buzzed about the film’s theatrical box office of ¥1.77 billion, which outperformed a Kimutaku (Takuya Kimura)-starring film released around the same time, as well as the gap between the film’s portrayal of manager Tomoaki Kanemoto and how fans actually viewed him back then. Praise and dismissals of it as “just a dramatization” both flooded in.

Is it actually any good?

The fact that this thread has zero momentum perfectly sums up what 5ch's sports board (NanJ) has become these days lol

Re: #4
Better not to bring up this movie too much.

Re: #4
I'm here for baseball commentary threads, not interested in something like this.
No matter how much of a documentary it is, I'd rather enjoy an actual "game" than some movie.
6AnonymousNov 7, 2026 22:08
I even set up a heads-up thread about this in advance, and you're all still like this. Rude.

Re: #5
Why's that? I heard it got good reviews.

Re: #9
This isn't even a documentary, it's straight-up fiction.
10AnonymousNov 7, 2026 22:09
It hasn't even been a year since the theatrical release — that's fast for a TV airing.
11AnonymousNov 7, 2026 22:10
Thought it'd take its time working through his childhood, but the pacing's pretty quick.
14AnonymousNov 7, 2026 22:12
Sounds like a Hanshin fan who never normally watches movies claimed the dead-center front row seat.
20AnonymousNov 7, 2026 22:14
Re: #14
Front row's actually hard to see from, so it's more of a bad seat if anything.
Guess they didn't know that since they never go to the movies.
15AnonymousNov 7, 2026 22:12
Yokota had so much expected of him that fans trashed him hard.
16AnonymousNov 7, 2026 22:12
Yokota's dad was a pretty good hitter too, you know.

Re: #16
It was weird how they changed the details for the movie.

No live-watch thread going up just shows this place is full of affiliate-blog kiddies now.

He died of a brain tumor at 25? That's so sad 😭😭😭
30AnonymousNov 7, 2026 22:20
Re: #21
In the movie he's basically background noise, and you don't really get to see the father's backstory.
37AnonymousNov 7, 2026 22:28
Re: #30
Maybe they didn't dig into that because it's Shintaro's story.
40AnonymousNov 7, 2026 22:30
This was last year's movie, right?
It didn't really hit big, did it?
47AnonymousNov 7, 2026 22:37
Re: #40
It was a long-running hit, actually.
49AnonymousNov 7, 2026 22:38
Re: #40
Box office was ¥1.77 billion, so that's plenty of a hit.
It actually beat "Tokyo Taxi" starring Kimutaku (Takuya Kimura), which was playing around the same time and made ¥1.65 billion.

That's a miracle.

The original book, written while Yokota was still alive

The TV drama adapted from it

Yokota passed away the year after the drama aired, and since the drama ended on a note like "Shintaro's story still has a long way to go───," rerunning it has become awkward.

Oh, that was Shotaro Mamiya?
My bad, I thought it was some AI-generated image.
78AnonymousNov 7, 2026 23:08
Can a brain tumor actually be caused by that kind of thing?
82AnonymousNov 7, 2026 23:13
Re: #78
Severe stress or bad living conditions can cause it even when you're young.
86AnonymousNov 7, 2026 23:18
Not to be harsh, but even if Yokota hadn't gotten sick, he probably would've been cut quickly under Kanemoto's coaching anyway.
Kanemoto was the last-place manager who forced switch-hitting on guys and had them bunt for safety way too often.
88AnonymousNov 7, 2026 23:21
Re: #86
But in the movie, Kanemoto's portrayed as a kind guy who really cares about his players.

So moving (lol)

What, is that not allowed?

Background and Key Debate Points

“Glory’s Throw Home” is based on the true story of former Hanshin Tigers outfielder Shintaro Yokota, who drew national attention for a spectacular throw during the 2016 Koshien exchange game and later died at 25 after publicly disclosing his brain tumor diagnosis. The original book was written while he was still alive, the TV drama aired the year before his death, and the theatrical film came out just last year — meaning the production timeline crosses back and forth across his life and death in a way that’s easy to miss outside the thread. The debate split between enjoying it as a dramatized, moving story versus viewing it as a “hagiography” that papers over how public opinion of him actually shifted (from high hopes to harsh criticism) at the time. The ¥1.77 billion box office figure is real, and the comparison with the film released around the same time is fact-based, but some comments about Kanemoto’s coaching style and reputation during his time as manager are secondhand accounts and speculation rather than firsthand experience.
