The story
A single comment on 5ch’s morning chat board — “MacBooks are too heavy to carry around” — set off a string of fact-check replies citing the actual weight and battery life of each model, and the thread snowballed into a full debate. The MacBook Neo/Air comes in at roughly 1.23–1.24kg, while the 14-inch Pro is about 1.55kg, with battery life rated up to 24 hours. The sticking point was whether that weight counts as “too heavy for daily carry” or is “actually necessary for working away from an outlet” — the discussion spread to comparisons with Let’s Note laptops and lightweight tablets, and even to who actually uses a Mac: salaried office workers versus freelancers and designers.

There's the charger and stuff too, you know
Try carrying it yourself and you'll see

Plenty of Starbucks locations deliberately don't put in outlets.
That's why some people deliberately pick a bulkier model if the battery lasts longer.
🤔?
Though a 65W-class USB charger is light enough to carry if you're sharing it with others.
If you're into design work, a MacBook makes sense, but I don't get picking a Mac otherwise. I could understand carrying an iPad around and using a Mac only at home, though.
If you've got the money, maybe it's just too much hassle to bother buying a separate keyboard.
Anyone smart would hook up an external SSD once home, or run a daily Time Machine backup over Wi-Fi.
Mac's snapshot-style backup system is genuinely excellent.
Not being able to save a file wherever you want is a dealbreaker.
Why aren't you using a reply tag? Some kind of personal rule?
Not bothering with reply tags is an old tradition on the 'Wolf' (Ōkami) board here.
Are you some newbie who doesn't even know the names of current Hello! Project members?
Did you lose big in the stock market or something?
No need to be this worked up.
Get out of your room and go to an actual Starbucks to see how people really use their Macs.
Macs seem to be more common among freelancers and people in design, graphics, or video work.
No matter the era, the only ones who win are minimalists and people with freakish stamina.
I've never once thought it was heavy.
Even women carry 40-liter backpacks when hiking, you know.
I commute with a Columbia backpack that has a laptop compartment.
And the surface is slick, so it's easy to drop too.
Background and Key Points of This Debate
The MacBook’s real-world weight comes in at roughly 1.2kg for the 13-inch lineup and about 1.55kg for the 14-inch Pro, and the figures cited in the thread largely line up with Apple’s official specs. What split opinion was whether that counts as “heavy”: on one side, there’s the practical argument that people working long hours away from a power outlet — say, at Starbucks — may actually prefer a heavier model for its longer battery life; on the other, comparisons with Let’s Note laptops and lightweight tablets kept fueling the gut feeling that “anything over 1kg isn’t something you carry around.” The jab that “using the battery reduces its max capacity” got mocked, but it’s easy to misjudge — capacity loss from lithium-ion charge/discharge cycles over time is a real phenomenon, so the comment wasn’t as far off as it was made out to be. As for who actually uses a Mac, the thread held two competing but not mutually exclusive assumptions: that corporate IT requirements push most office workers toward Windows, and that Macs are the tool of choice for freelancers and those in design work — both plausible, reflecting real differences between professions.
