The story

Nippon TV announcer Nukariya (忽滑谷) Kokoro has announced on her own Instagram that she will be taking a leave of absence to accompany her husband on an overseas posting.

On a 5ch thread, more attention went to how to read the rare surname “Nukariya” than to the leave of absence itself, though the discussion also touched on opinions about leaving one’s career to follow a spouse abroad, and on the old practice at some stations where one half of a married announcer couple would have to quit — so reactions ended up scattered rather than settling on one theme.

WHAAAT (´д`) WHAAAT — (a classic 2ch/5ch shock-face emoticon)
She was even married?

Nippon TV is a pretty tolerant company, huh

Re: #5
At Nippon Television, when two announcers married each other,
one of them used to be forced to quit.
Uozumi quit over that and ended up divorcing too.
It's not like that anymore though.

Re: #5
Because they'd get sued otherwise, lol

Nukariya (忽滑谷) Kokoro

what an amazing name

if she takes her husband's surname after marriage she'll lose that individuality,
so I hope she keeps her maiden name

Sounds like the title of a rakugo story (traditional comic storytelling)

Re: #11
Like "Sokotsu Nagaya" (a famous rakugo piece, "The Careless Tenement")
12AnonymousNov 5, 2026 00:21
Can't read it at all.
What an incredibly rare surname.
13AnonymousNov 5, 2026 00:22
Saw little Nukariya in Shimbashi once, she was super cute
14AnonymousNov 5, 2026 00:23
Oh, it's "Nukariya"? I thought it might be "Sokotsu." Either way it's a name that sounds like it invites carelessness, lol (both readings play on words related to "careless/off guard")
15AnonymousNov 5, 2026 00:24
Huh.
Is she really just giving up her own career though?
16AnonymousNov 5, 2026 00:25
It's a surname so it's not a "sparkly name" (trendy, unusual given name)…
but still, I can't read it.
23AnonymousNov 5, 2026 00:32
Ah, so THAT'S why she suddenly quit.
She was an announcer with an oddly pushy way of talking.
Her news reading was so-so, but once she got into the chit-chat segments she was a bit much.
24AnonymousNov 5, 2026 00:33
Getting to keep her job while following him overseas — pretty "on the ball" of her (a pun on "nukari" in her name, meaning "without oversight/shrewd")
27AnonymousNov 5, 2026 00:37
No idea how many years they'll be living abroad, but what are the terms of this leave?
Maybe it's unpaid, but she can come back whenever she feels like it?
28AnonymousNov 5, 2026 00:39
In that case isn't it just resignation, not a leave of absence?
29AnonymousNov 5, 2026 00:42
Going from Seishin Joshi (an elite Catholic women's university) to being a TV announcer — quite the dream path
30AnonymousNov 5, 2026 00:42
So she's going to Africa?
Watch out for Ebola then
62AnonymousNov 5, 2026 01:27
Re: #30
Is her husband with a trading company maybe?
32AnonymousNov 5, 2026 00:44
There's a time limit on leaves of absence too, so won't this just turn into resignation anyway?
34AnonymousNov 5, 2026 00:50
Go ahead, go ahead 💁 hurry up and make a baby 👶
36AnonymousNov 5, 2026 00:54
Nukariya (忽滑谷)
[Readings]: Nukariya, Kotsunameya
[Nationwide count]: approximately 660 people

No way…
There are really over 600 people out there with this bizarre surname?

Re: #36
More than you'd expect

Re: #36
Wish they'd do another one of those shows with Kukkii and Iio — the one where the fewer people share your surname, the more money you win. Whenever someone takes on the challenge thinking their surname sounds rare, there turn out to be way more people with it than expected — that's the trap, lol
37AnonymousNov 5, 2026 00:56
Glad it's not read "Kutsunameya" (would sound like "shoe-licker")
50AnonymousNov 5, 2026 01:06
Re: #37
Yeah, that's what I thought it'd be
44AnonymousNov 5, 2026 01:01
Nippon TV really likes these quirky-character types.
Same with Ueda Marie — once their personality gets too strong, the network swaps them out fast
48AnonymousNov 5, 2026 01:03
Re: #44
There really are a lot of odd ones
57AnonymousNov 5, 2026 01:16
Re: #44
Speaking of which, I wonder if that cross-dressing producer is still there
46AnonymousNov 5, 2026 01:02
So in the end it's a life dragged along by the husband, huh.
A hard-charging career-track woman at my company quit for the same reason.
Such a waste.
52AnonymousNov 5, 2026 01:07
Didn't know a system like this even existed.
Feels kind of pointless for the company to keep her on the books though…

Kutsuna Shiori, formerly of Oscar Promotion (talent agency), was also unreadable for me at first — (different kanji, similarly tricky name)

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The surname Nukariya (忽滑谷) is a genuine but very rare one, held by an estimated 660 people nationwide, and read as “Nukariya.” Marriage and leaves of absence among announcers aren’t unusual in themselves, but the thread also brought up the old practice at some TV stations where, if two in-house announcers married each other, one of them would be made to quit — a custom that’s said to no longer be common today. The exact terms of her leave (duration, whether she’s still paid) aren’t stated in her own announcement, so the speculation in the thread doesn’t go beyond guesswork. Reactions split broadly into two camps: those fixated on how to read and the origin of her unusual surname, and those debating the pattern of a wife stepping away from her career to follow her husband abroad — mixing surprise at the old system with skepticism about giving up a career for it.
