The story

Director Takashi Yamazaki’s new film “Godzilla -0.0” opened on November 3, pulling in ¥910 million and 590,000 admissions on its first day alone — the biggest single-day opening ever for a live-action film in Japan. Running at 201% of the previous film “Godzilla -1.0″‘s day-one pace, it has fans hoping the series will crack ¥10 billion in box office revenue for the first time. On 5ch threads, the kaiju scenes are winning praise, but opinion is split on how much screen time goes to the human drama and on director Yamazaki’s style, with some pointing out that rising movie ticket prices may be inflating the revenue figures.

The latest entry in the “Godzilla” series, “Godzilla -0.0” (Godzilla Minus Zero Point Zero, directed by Takashi Yamazaki), opened on November 3, and it’s been confirmed that first-day-only box office revenue hit ¥910 million with audience numbers topping 590,000 (according to Kogyo Tsushinsha).

In terms of single-day opening box office revenue, it achieved the remarkable feat of ranking No. 1 in Japanese history among all live-action films, domestic or foreign. It’s a mega-hit of a start, putting the film on track to become the first in the “Godzilla” series to ever break ¥10 billion in box office revenue.

“Godzilla -0.0” opened the same day in 448 theaters nationwide (383 standard screens plus 65 IMAX screens), coming in at 201% of the day-one revenue of the previous film “Godzilla -1.0” (released November 3, 2023, with a total box office of ¥7.65 billion).

Watching 'Showa retro exploration' videos on YouTube is way more fun than watching Peace-kun the peacock at Omiya Park anyway.
3AnonymousNov 4, 2026 13:49
So people in 1949 looked like this, huh.
5AnonymousNov 4, 2026 13:50
The theater at my local Seven Park is totally empty, yet the numbers are this huge — wild.
6AnonymousNov 4, 2026 13:51
It's gonna beat Demon Slayer!!
73AnonymousNov 4, 2026 14:51
Re: #6
Just on day one, it already has.
9AnonymousNov 4, 2026 13:54
This time it's probably mostly people after the bonus figure.
35AnonymousNov 4, 2026 14:15
Re: #9
It'll help the opening numbers for sure, but if the movie isn't actually good, merch tie-ins alone won't keep sales climbing.
It's really about how many repeat viewers they can hold onto now.
37AnonymousNov 4, 2026 14:17
Re: #9
Wait, are there really that many people who want that cheap eraser-toy-looking figure?
10AnonymousNov 4, 2026 13:54
They even got foreigners from 'Why Did You Come to Japan?' (the TV show) to tour the studio — that's some serious stealth marketing.
11AnonymousNov 4, 2026 13:56
The human-drama parts are boring.
13AnonymousNov 4, 2026 13:57
Re: #11
The kaiju scenes seem to be getting good reviews.
But the human drama takes up like 90% of it, so opinions are split.
12AnonymousNov 4, 2026 13:57
Is it better than the Eva guy's version?
Anyway, Godzilla as a franchise never gets old, gotta give it that.
I'm from the Godzilla vs. Mothra generation — my mom took me to see it back then.
14AnonymousNov 4, 2026 13:58
What order should I watch them in to enjoy it the most?
81AnonymousNov 4, 2026 14:58
Re: #14
Original → Shin Godzilla → -1.0 → this one
15AnonymousNov 4, 2026 13:58
So it's not about attendance after all.
Going by revenue, isn't this just the ticket price hikes talking……
19AnonymousNov 4, 2026 14:01
Re: #15
It was ¥1,800 until not that long ago.
There's a lot piled on now with IMAX surcharges and the like.
17AnonymousNov 4, 2026 13:59
Only caught a glimpse in the commercial, but just having Hidetaka Yoshioka in the cast already gives it that 'Always: Sunset on Third Street' vibe (the Yamazaki-directed franchise he's known for).
18AnonymousNov 4, 2026 14:01
So is this director actually any good? I still can't shake the image of that terrible Dragon Quest movie — why'd he even make that thing?
32AnonymousNov 4, 2026 14:14
Re: #18
He's turned out a fair mix of great films, mediocre films, and flat-out bad ones.
36AnonymousNov 4, 2026 14:16
Re: #18
Does a single scene from his work stick in your head the way it does with a James Cameron or Spielberg film?
For someone so obsessed with visuals, none of it actually leaves an impression.
40AnonymousNov 4, 2026 14:18
Re: #18
Striking out doesn't mean you're not a good player.
20AnonymousNov 4, 2026 14:03
Can I still enjoy it without having seen the last one?
Not that I'm going anyway.
23AnonymousNov 4, 2026 14:04
Theaters have all jacked up their prices, so hearing 'biggest box office ever' doesn't really mean much to me.
27AnonymousNov 4, 2026 14:11
Re: #23
And IMAX costs even more on top of that.
Makes you wonder why they don't just go by attendance numbers instead.
26AnonymousNov 4, 2026 14:11
Guess even Godzilla gets excited when Masami Nagasawa's in the cast! Running at 201% versus the previous '-1.0,' as of 11am.
28AnonymousNov 4, 2026 14:12
Feels like Godzilla's got about three storylines running in parallel at this point.
Is it about to turn into a Terminator- or Independence Day-style mess?
29AnonymousNov 4, 2026 14:12
'Bayside Shakedown' (the long-running detective movie franchise) made just under ¥900M over the weekend and will probably finish around ¥4B.

Even doubling that, ¥10B is still a stretch,
so maybe throw in some kind of bonus.
30AnonymousNov 4, 2026 14:12
Doubt that many people will go watch it more than once.
31AnonymousNov 4, 2026 14:14
Just saw it — total snoozefest. The script is garbage, the dragged-out human drama is unbearably dull, and they lean on Godzilla way too conveniently for the plot. Not worth seeing.
33AnonymousNov 4, 2026 14:14
'Kokuho' is probably out of reach? But it looks like it'll pass 'Bayside Shakedown'?
34AnonymousNov 4, 2026 14:15
Re: #33
Looks like it'll pass 'Bayside Shakedown' this weekend.
51AnonymousNov 4, 2026 14:32
Why isn't this one opening on a Friday?
53AnonymousNov 4, 2026 14:34
Re: #51
Nov 3 is Godzilla's birthday (the release date of the original film).
52AnonymousNov 4, 2026 14:32
Saw it yesterday. I watched Chiikawa three times, but I think once is plenty for this Godzilla.
56AnonymousNov 4, 2026 14:35
Re: #52
Nah, normally once is plenty for a movie.
I think of a movie as something you watch once, start to finish.
This Demon Slayer/Chiikawa gotta-collect-the-bonus mentality has gotten out of hand.
80AnonymousNov 4, 2026 14:55
I saw Yuma Ishigaki and Hideaki Anno's names in the credits but couldn't tell where they actually showed up.
83AnonymousNov 4, 2026 14:58
Re: #80
Yuma Ishigaki played the brash pilot, and Anno had a cameo reading a newspaper on the train.
89AnonymousNov 4, 2026 15:02
Re: #80
Actually he wasn't the pilot — apparently he played Dr. Murakami's assistant.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

This “best ever” ranking is based on box office revenue, not attendance — it’s worth noting that audience turnout itself isn’t actually the highest on record. In recent years, format-based surcharges and rising ticket prices have kept climbing, and that price inflation plays a role in these revenue records too. The previous film, “Godzilla -1.0,” ultimately earned ¥7.65 billion, so this film’s 201% day-one pace is a strong start, but no entry in the series has yet topped ¥10 billion in box office revenue. On the threads, while the kaiju scenes are getting high marks, opinion is split over how much weight the human drama carries and over director Takashi Yamazaki’s style, with some posters taking the cooler view that a strong opening day doesn’t necessarily guarantee a strong final total.
