The story

On November 4, Kansai Television announced that a sequel to the medical drama “Unmet: A Brain Surgeon’s Diary,” starring Hana Sugisaki, will air on the Fuji TV network starting this January. The show is a live-action adaptation of a manga written by a former brain surgeon, and since the first season had already reached a tidy conclusion, the sequel announcement sparked mixed reactions on 5ch — some mourning that “it ended so cleanly” and others eager for “a drama beyond imagination.” Discussion also drifted beyond the show itself, touching on Sugisaki’s past roles and the fact that the two leads, who become a couple in the story, ended up dating in real life as well.

Turns out she's the daughter of 'Shake' from the rock band The Red Warriors.

Re: #2
The live-action Ikura-chan (the baby from Sazae-san — 'ikura' means salmon roe, so the salmon joke continues).
3AnonymousNov 4, 2026 08:56
Wait, isn't the protagonist supposed to be a guy named Sanpei?
4AnonymousNov 4, 2026 08:56
Screenwriter, don't you dare pull a 'Sexy Tanaka-san' and run away from the source material (a reference to a notorious adaptation controversy).
6AnonymousNov 4, 2026 08:58
I don't even remember what happened in it anymore…
but rewatching season one just to catch up sounds like a hassle too.
8AnonymousNov 4, 2026 09:02
They're making a sequel to this and to 'Meoto' even though neither was exactly a smash hit.
'Meoto' ended up doing worse than its first season too.

Re: #8
Both this one and 'Meoto' got decent buzz from their first seasons, so a sequel isn't that strange.
Though 'Meoto' got way too lovey-dovey compared to season one — kind of creepy now.

Just watched it recently.
Sugisaki Hana is cute, sure, but the premise is way too far-fetched.

Re: #12
Feels like every drama Sugisaki Hana headlines flops.
14AnonymousNov 4, 2026 09:10
Even though the original manga ended on a similar note?
16AnonymousNov 4, 2026 09:12
She's cute so I want to watch, but
I remember the story being mediocre last time too — dropped it after episode one.
17AnonymousNov 4, 2026 09:15
I'm happy, but part of me also wishes they'd just leave it alone since it ended so cleanly.
20AnonymousNov 4, 2026 09:19
Sugisaki Hana seems like she's got real range, but lately she keeps getting cast as the same 'unpretentious, natural' woman type.
22AnonymousNov 4, 2026 09:27
Feels like one of those hits that doesn't actually show up in the ratings, like that 'Viva whatever' show.
The kind of 'success' that's basically just in your head.

Re: #13
The Battleship Island drama had great acting from Sugisaki and a great recreation of the island, but
the script was so bad I was irritated the whole way through.
Great material, completely wasted.

Why's everyone happy about a Fuji TV drama announcement?
Wasn't Fuji TV supposed to be finished after that Jiro Sato drama?
27AnonymousNov 4, 2026 09:40
Re: #25
It's not a Fuji TV in-house production —
it's made by Kansai Television.
29AnonymousNov 4, 2026 09:42
'Twice-Cooked Pork'-san (a nickname referencing the dish) —
she's really grown into a beauty 🙃
31AnonymousNov 4, 2026 09:44
I'd consider watching if they swapped the lead for Mio Imada.
32AnonymousNov 4, 2026 09:46
Season one wrapped up nicely, so a sequel wasn't really necessary…
but I'll watch it anyway.
35AnonymousNov 4, 2026 09:59
I was reading it as it was serialized, but partway through the focus got kind of blurry,
and I remember losing track of which manga I was even reading.
I think Morning was running like three doctor manga at once back then.
36AnonymousNov 4, 2026 10:02
The acting from the two leads and the direction were both great — my favorite drama.
It ended so cleanly that I'm happy about the sequel but also a bit nervous.
42AnonymousNov 4, 2026 10:27
Since she's Shake's daughter, her musician friends apparently call her 'Ikura-chan' lol (continuing the salmon-roe joke)
55AnonymousNov 4, 2026 11:11
Re: #42
Her dad's 'Shake' (salmon), so he went by 'Salmon Kogure.'
45AnonymousNov 4, 2026 10:41
It was a good drama, but it kind of killed the mood knowing the two leads became a real-life couple.
47AnonymousNov 4, 2026 10:46
Re: #45
Actually it's the other way around — apparently she asked to have her real-life boyfriend cast as her co-star.
54AnonymousNov 4, 2026 11:10
It's a Kantele production though—
59AnonymousNov 4, 2026 11:25
Re: #54
Unlike dramas made directly by Fuji TV, Kansai TV productions are often actually worth watching.
58AnonymousNov 4, 2026 11:17
Sugisaki Hana was at her cutest in 'Diamonds Sleeping in the Sea.'
Light makeup, playing a country girl — but that's exactly what makes it work.
69AnonymousNov 4, 2026 12:04
Re: #58
The confession scene in that drama was the best I've seen in recent years.
The drama as a whole was mediocre, though.
63AnonymousNov 4, 2026 11:50
I dropped this drama partway through, but
I bet it's popular less as a 'doctor drama' and more in the 'terminal illness drama' lineage.
67AnonymousNov 4, 2026 11:57
Re: #63
It's written by a former brain surgeon who wants people to understand brain disorders, so
the patient portrayals are detailed and realistic, while the medical side is pretty sloppy — or rather, exaggerated for dramatic effect.
68AnonymousNov 4, 2026 12:00
Man, Kayo Noro is in literally every scene.
72AnonymousNov 4, 2026 12:06
Hurry up with the sequel to 'White Cane' too (´・ω・`)
83AnonymousNov 4, 2026 12:27
Re: #72
Honestly I might want that one more.
But the video rental shop from that show has probably gone out of business by now.

Background and Key Points

“Unmet” is a manga written by former brain surgeon Yuzuru Koshika with art by Kanjin Otsuki, depicting brain surgery and the disorders patients live with. The drama adaptation had already reached a tidy ending with its first season, so the thread held both calls to “leave it alone since it ended so cleanly” and real anticipation for the sequel. Several posts also noted that the production company is Kansai Television, not Fuji TV itself — a network-affiliate-versus-production-company distinction that’s easy for viewers to misread. Sugisaki Hana, meanwhile, has appeared in buzzy titles like “Diamonds Sleeping in the Sea” and the “Battleship Island” drama, where the writing is often more divisive than her performance — the same split between “excitement for her acting” and “worry about the script” showed up again here around the sequel.
