The story
Former professional wrestler Riki Choshu (74) appeared on Nippon TV’s “Odoru! Sanma Gotten!!” on November 3, alongside his wife Eiko, who is 12 years younger than him. The couple wore badges reading “39 years married,” but the show revisited the fact that they had actually gone through a late-in-life divorce in 2015, reconciling and remarrying two years later. On the 5channel “Geinou/Sports News+” board, reactions focused less on the details of the reconciliation and more on how posters feel about Choshu as a person. Some enjoyed the lovable character he plays on variety shows, while others took a harsher view, pointing to his notoriously strict conduct during his wrestling days and the rocky outcomes of the promotions he ran. Posters also dug up past episodes, including the money trouble with the Sasaki Kensuke couple and his falling-out with Tarzan Yamamoto.

What people said
Nah, I'm not splitting myself in two
If you could actually get me to split myself, now THAT would be something
I've only got ONE body, you hear me?! (riffing on Choshu's famously cranky catchphrase to overeager fans)
He was in Kimengumi, wasn't he (the old manga/anime)
Going and getting divorced once, huh?
but if you actually remember his wrestling-era reputation it's just plain scary.
He's all smiles because there's money in it — that's exactly what makes him scary.
When it's serious trouble, like with Akira Hokuto and [her husband] Kensuke Sasaki, he hasn't actually made up with them.
He's selfish too.
Won't do anything he doesn't want to do.
Onita himself grumbled that "that guy never takes an electric explosion" (Onita's signature exploding-barbed-wire deathmatch gimmick).
Onita's the type who WANTS to take hits like that,
so he really couldn't wrap his head around it.
[Choshu would] just trade insults with Ogawa the whole time
and never actually wrestle. Fans would yell "Lame, Choshu!"
and he'd just hightail it out of there anyway.
He was pretty mild-mannered before he became the "Revolutionary Warrior" and blew up in popularity,
but once he got huge he started acting high-handed.
Guess that's just unavoidable at his age though.
Compared to [Keiji] Muto, who totally wrecked his knee in his hot-spring business venture and is now in a wheelchair with an artificial joint, at least Choshu can still move around however he likes — guess that counts as aging reasonably well by comparison…
Hard to tell since he's sitting down, but he's not much bigger than his wife.
That surprised me.
Choshu: "Man, that's annoying… alright! Chinta! Run 'em over!"
Driver Hashimoto: "Yes sir!" *yanks the wheel* — GAGAGA~!
Biker gang: "Whoaaa!!"
Choshu: "Hey! Don't actually run them over!!"
Exactly this lol
It's a story that sums up the whole "Riki Choshu" character.
Sort your trash properly.
Well, that's just not a Japanese sensibility lol. Good on his wife for coming back. Living together must be rough lol
In the end it probably comes down to whether people can rely on him financially.
Riki Choshu: Hmmm… well, someone who always puts me first, that's good.
Yuka: Mm-hmm, I get that~! How well someone understands you really matters a lot, doesn't it~!
Naomi Matsushima: Wait, does Mr. Choshu actually go on dates and things?
Riki Choshu: Ahh, well, sure, that's a given. I go on dates, yeah, hmmm.
Kyoko Uchida: Where do you go~?
Riki Choshu: Hmmm… ah well, Saipan — I take her to Saipan.
Makiko Esumi: Ohh~, Saipan's got that beautiful ocean and great sunshine, doesn't it~.
Kyoko Uchida: And Palau's nice too, isn't it~! Palau!
Riki Choshu: WHAT WAS THAT, HUH?!
(Choshu suddenly lariats Kyoko Uchida across the throat, still seated the whole time)
Takes me back lol
What happened with the repayment?
Apparently it was a loan to the company, not a personal loan to Choshu, so his attitude is "why are you telling ME to pay it back"
…or so they say
but Choshu's quite a piece of work, Choshu — and not in a good way.
I mean, the guy's run TWO wrestling promotions into the ground.
After he retired, he did say the Scorpion Deathlock
was taught to him by Karl Gotch.
Background and Key Points of This Discussion
Riki Choshu went through a late-in-life divorce from his wife Eiko in 2015, then remarried her two years later. On the show, the couple appeared wearing badges reading “39 years married” — worth noting that this figure includes the years they were separated and divorced. What split opinion in the thread wasn’t so much the reconciliation itself as how to read Choshu as a person. Against those who enjoyed the affable character he plays on “Sanma Gotten,” others — aware of his tough reputation during his active wrestling years and the bitter outcomes of running multiple promotions, including All Japan Pro Wrestling and WJ Pro-Wrestling — took a colder view of his current cuddly image. Some posts speculated that the divorce was a “sham divorce meant to keep his wife from being saddled with WJ Pro-Wrestling’s debts,” but it’s worth stressing that this is speculation from 5ch posters, not a fact confirmed by the show or any news report.
