The Mitaka vs. Fuchu vs. Chofu “Status” Showdown — 5ch Says: “Chofu’s Got Jindaiji Temple, Though”

From our other sites

The story

A thread titled “Why Did Mitaka and Fuchu Lose to Chofu?” went up on 5ch, and local residents of these three cities along the Keio and Chuo rail lines piled in with hometown bragging rights and nostalgic memories. Posters pointed out that Fuchu has Okunitama Shrine and a prison, while Mitaka has sites tied to novelist Osamu Dazai plus the National Astronomical Observatory and JAXA — only for others to counter that Chofu has Jindaiji Temple and the Keio Arena. Since everyone used a different yardstick for “status,” whether tourist attractions, famous residents, or sheer livability, the conversation sprawled from comparing the three cities into station trivia and nostalgic tales of the Showa era.

Why though?
2AnonymousNov 3, 2026 17:50
Fuchu: a prison
Mitaka: Osamu Dazai, the National Astronomical Observatory, JAXA
Chofu: absolutely nothing

Re: #2
Chofu's got Jindaiji Temple, though
3AnonymousNov 3, 2026 17:59
Chofu → that's a Keio Line town
That alone drops it a tier
5AnonymousNov 3, 2026 19:01
Chofu's got Jindaiji Temple, a massive entertainment spot, so there
6AnonymousNov 3, 2026 19:10
My hometown Inagi's got Yomiuri Land and the Giants, so we're above you all
12AnonymousNov 3, 2026 19:19
My image of Chofu is Erina Mano's “My Days for You,”
plus scenery that feels straight out of a Yoshiharu Tsuge manga
like “The Useless Man” (Munou no Hito)
13AnonymousNov 3, 2026 19:21
When I hear “Chofu” I can't help thinking of Choshu-Fu in Yamaguchi (a different town, same reading)
14AnonymousNov 3, 2026 19:24
All three are still a bit different from being inside Tokyo's 23 wards
Ride a bike through the residential streets on a weekday afternoon and there's this uniquely peaceful vibe
15AnonymousNov 3, 2026 19:25
Grew up in Mitaka — there's nothing there
But it's peaceful
17AnonymousNov 3, 2026 19:27
Famous people from Mitaka: wrestler Chono (Masahiro Chono) and Yuka Nihei

Re: #17
Arashi's Ohno-kun too
18AnonymousNov 3, 2026 19:27
Mitaka's just-right amount of peacefulness is nice
You can bike to Kichijoji, so it's livable
22AnonymousNov 3, 2026 19:30
Of these three, Fuchu feels a bit far out
The real loser here might be Komae, which nobody's even mentioning

I hate how narrow Koshu Kaido is
I prefer the Tohachi Road
32AnonymousNov 3, 2026 19:50
Every time I drive through I wonder why on earth there's a “Shinagawa Street” way out here
59AnonymousNov 3, 2026 20:34
Re: #32
Apparently the road follows the old route people used to fetch seawater from Shinagawa for purification rites at Okunitama Shrine, which eventually became a street
49AnonymousNov 3, 2026 20:21
Chofu's average age feels way younger
Mitaka has basically zero young people, even next to Kichijoji, Nishi-Ogikubo, Asagaya, Koenji, and Nakano

Re: #49
As a ratio they're basically the same

Minors in Chofu: approx. 35,000 (approx. 14.5%)
Minors in Mitaka: approx. 27,500 (approx. 14.3%)

I don't really get the point of that big open space in front of Chofu Station
95AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:10
Re: #90
Apparently that spot was planned as a public viewing site for the Tokyo Olympics
97AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:11
Re: #95
Ah, I see
104AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:20
Re: #97
It wasn't just planned — it's actually used for public viewings of soccer, rugby, and other sports
I saw on TV that they'd planned to extend it all the way to the tree-lined street in front of Green Hall for the Tokyo Olympics, but local residents opposed it and the plan fell through

I lived in Mitaka as an elementary schooler around Showa 55 (1980) — any questions?
102AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:16
Re: #101
Nobody's talking about something from almost 50 years ago
112AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:24
Re: #110
For the record, it was Mitaka Municipal Daiichi Elementary School
113AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:26
Re: #112
Wait, looking again — you mean you were an elementary schooler in Showa 55, not born in Showa 55, lol
I'm still a fresh-faced guy in my 40s
I moved, and ended up going to elementary school in Chofu
120AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:35
What's up with that mysterious siding track at Kita-Fuchu?
Someone explain
127AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:40
Re: #120
Asked an AI and it says it's actually a dedicated Toshiba rail line
122AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:36
Isn't Ikimono-gakari (the band) an Odakyu Line thing?
126AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:38
Re: #122
It's because that's the theme song for “Gegege no Nyobo” (an NHK drama)
129AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:42
Wish they'd hold more events at venues along the Keio Line
143AnonymousNov 3, 2026 23:02
Re: #129
There's Keio Arena, go for it
≠ME's playing there this weekend

Though it's not really a venue built for Hello! Project fans, lol

Re: #130
There's a ton of houses there
A tower condo's about to go up from redevelopment > Chitose-Karasuyama
130AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:44
Why does Chitose-Karasuyama have so many people getting on and off morning and evening?
Are there really that many houses there?
134AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:47
About 20 years ago I followed a line of university students walking from Mitaka toward Seikei University, and I vaguely remember everyone cutting across the gravel of a parking lot
Was that actually the shortest route?

Re: #134
Why were you following them, lol

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The claims cited in the thread — that the plaza in front of Chofu Station was planned as a public viewing venue for the Tokyo Olympics but the extension to the tree-lined street fell through due to local opposition, and that the Kita-Fuchu siding is a dedicated Toshiba line — are both based on individual posters’ memories or search results, not confirmed by any official source. The same goes for the cited minor-population ratios (Chofu 14.5%, Mitaka 14.3%): these figures were simply posted within the thread with no source given. It’s safest to treat them as “local residents’ impressions and hearsay” rather than verified fact. Mitaka, Fuchu, and Chofu are all mid-sized cities in Tokyo’s Tama area along the Keio and Chuo lines, and “hometown pride” threads comparing distance from central Tokyo or the presence of tourist attractions are a recurring staple on 5ch — this time too, the fact that everyone applied a different yardstick for “status” (whether a city has an observatory, whether it has a prison, and so on) is exactly what sent the discussion sprawling in so many directions.
