US eShop Slashes Switch 2 Versions of FF7 Remake and Rebirth to $7

From our other sites

The story

Square Enix has slashed the prices of the Switch 2 versions of Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade and Rebirth on the North American Nintendo eShop, dropping them to around $7-8 apiece from their usual $49.99. Other titles like Bravely Default and Octopath Traveler 0 have also hit all-time lows in the same sale. On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, opinions split on the reason for the discount — some pointed out that Rebirth was already cut 40% just a month after its Japanese release, while others suspected this is an early clearance sale meant to mask weak preorders for the upcoming trilogy finale, Revelation.

Do it in Japan already

Doesn't anyone think it's messed up to spit in the face of the hardcore fans who bought it at full price?

Re: #3
Japan already did this to launch-day buyers — the Switch 2 version of Rebirth got a 40% discount just one month after release.

They're in a state where, to claw back from bombing on a certain platform, they have to flood the market with copies no matter the cost — even burning user trust, even ignoring profitability.
6AnonymousNov 3, 2026 07:29
Isn't this the fastest discount turnaround Square Enix has ever done?
8AnonymousNov 3, 2026 07:35
Even on Steam it only went down to about ¥1800 (~$12).
9AnonymousNov 3, 2026 07:36
FF used to be super stingy with sales not that long ago.
14AnonymousNov 3, 2026 07:40
Remake was down to ¥1000 in Japan a while back too, but ¥1000 for Rebirth is cheap.
I figure it'll hit its lowest right before the third game, so I'm planning to buy then.
Not just FF — same goes for the Resident Evil remakes — but seeing a version on another platform going for dirt cheap right next to one priced 2-3x as much just kills any urge to buy.
15AnonymousNov 3, 2026 07:41
The file size alone is a dealbreaker even if it were free.
And it's split into parts, yet they still couldn't fit it on a game card.
16AnonymousNov 3, 2026 07:44
If they'd cut the annoying minigames it probably would've stayed priced higher.
17AnonymousNov 3, 2026 07:45
Some creator was complaining that people only buy on sale, but when stuff gets discounted this hard, it kills any desire to buy at full price.
18AnonymousNov 3, 2026 07:46
They probably want to funnel customers toward the Switch 2 version for the third game.
20AnonymousNov 3, 2026 07:50
This is probably one of those 'pricing error' deals you guys love so much.
22AnonymousNov 3, 2026 07:54
Honestly I'd rather THEY paid ME.
Square Enix games are a waste of time.
23AnonymousNov 3, 2026 08:06
The FF7 Remake trilogy cash-grab, beaten out by HD-2D's Resonance
24AnonymousNov 3, 2026 08:08
The character models look bad and the game isn't fun at all — that's fatal for 3D-era FF.
26AnonymousNov 3, 2026 08:11
Since it's play-once-then-delete anyway, that's why it ends up a desperate fire sale.
They should just drop the texture resolution and cut it down to around 50GB.
27AnonymousNov 3, 2026 08:12
FF7 barely feels like a 'game' so I can't get motivated without mods — PC is the only option.
I'll just wait until the full trilogy bundle hits ¥1000.

Re: #27
Don't want to burn this much storage in an era when storage prices are through the roof.
28AnonymousNov 3, 2026 08:13
The Switch 2 version of Rebirth didn't even chart outside Japan and the UK, so it couldn't be tallied — this is probably a last-ditch push.
32AnonymousNov 3, 2026 08:22
As you can tell from how well Resonance was received, FF loyalists just suck at action games.
35AnonymousNov 3, 2026 08:31
Re: #32
Square Enix's action games are boring to begin with, though…
40AnonymousNov 3, 2026 08:41
Re: #35
It's probably boring because there's a lot of unfair stuff that's brutal if you're bad at it, right?
48AnonymousNov 3, 2026 08:51
Re: #35
Not just Square Enix in general — calling anything 'action' since FF15 an actual action game is almost laughable.
41AnonymousNov 3, 2026 08:41
The developers themselves think FF7 is a legend, so they probably figured a trilogy would be a breeze.
At this point you could just put 'FF7' in the dictionary under 'overrated.'
50AnonymousNov 3, 2026 08:59
Re: #41
Square Enix self-petitioned the Japan Anniversary Association to create an official 'FF7 Day' — that's beyond self-overrating, that's just unhinged.

– Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster – $27.99 (was $39.99)

The launch title costs more

– Octopath Traveler 0 – $24.99 (was $49.99) –

A simultaneous multi-platform release

https://nintendoeverything.com/square-enix-nintendo-switch-2-and-switch-sale-live-with-final-fantasy-7-rebirth-octopath-traveler-0-more-at-new-low-prices/
Guess this really is their biggest discount ever because it bombed on PS5.

Re: #59
Final Fantasy 7 Reunion – $29.99 (was $49.99)

– Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth – $7.49 (previously $49.99)
– Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade – $7.99 (previously $39.99)

Reunion got knocked down to $30,
but seeing Remake and Rebirth at $7,
this looks like way more than just a 'not selling' discount — it's a handout to get people to buy Revelation lol.
Maybe preorders for Revelation are so bad they're panicking again? lol
60AnonymousNov 3, 2026 09:44
Racking up unit sales alone might look good to investors who don't actually play games, but I think it's a dead end long-term…
62AnonymousNov 3, 2026 10:25
Re: #60
I mean, Capcom's doing great running that exact playbook.
61AnonymousNov 3, 2026 10:24
I'm playing FF7 Remake but
it's not that fun lol

The movement feels stiff when you're controlling it, you can't jump at spots where you clearly should be able to (like in Xenoblade), and there's this frustrating feeling of invisible walls blocking normal movement.

And then they wasted effort on a pointless minigame where you move Aerith around with a robot arm.
Total waste of dev resources.

Does Rebirth ditch that clunky control scheme and let you play freely like Xenoblade?
69AnonymousNov 3, 2026 10:52
Re: #61
Rebirth takes place in open fields instead of Remake's corridors, and you can climb small ledges, so it feels less cramped.
Though for some reason you still can't pull off the superhuman high jumps you see in the cutscenes.
If you already find that arm minigame tedious, brace yourself — Rebirth is a minigame-fest on a whole different level.
87AnonymousNov 3, 2026 13:44
Re: #61
Rebirth is way more fun, tier above, but yeah, that stuff's still there.
66AnonymousNov 3, 2026 10:40
They'll probably bundle all three into a complete edition eventually.
I'll just wait for THAT to go on sale.
68AnonymousNov 3, 2026 10:45
Re: #66
PS5 already sells them as a 3-pack bundle.
No idea why Switch 2 doesn't have one.
Maybe this is to make up for that?
76AnonymousNov 3, 2026 12:16
The real question is what happens when they release the all-in-one edition.
For Kingdom Hearts, up through 2.5 it was cloud-version-only, so apparently people who already owned the download version could upgrade cheap.
78AnonymousNov 3, 2026 12:33
Re: #76
Sounds like it's half price.
Maybe I should've just bought the cloud version.
96AnonymousNov 3, 2026 15:01
Judging by US Amazon sales rankings, the Switch 2 version seems to make up a bigger share of sales there than in Japan.
In Japan the PS5 version looks like it overwhelmingly dominates.

Re: #96
At this point the only people still buying FF in Japan are 'gangimari' diehards (slang for fans who are obsessively, almost deliriously devoted).
Of course it's skewed.

Background and Key Debate Points

The Switch 2 versions of the FF7 Remake series launched in 2025, and reports say they struggled so badly in North America that they didn’t even register on sales charts. As the thread notes, this isn’t unprecedented — the Switch 2 version of Rebirth was already cut 40% in Japan just a month after release, so this discount is likely less an emergency measure and more an extension of a sales strategy that prioritizes reach over margin. Where the thread split was on motive: some saw it as straightforward promotion, while others argued Square Enix is being forced to pull buyers in early because preorders for the trilogy’s finale, Revelation, are underperforming. Both are speculation from 5ch users — it’s worth noting Square Enix has not officially explained the reason for the discount.
