Why Are Kyushu-Born Idols Always So Talented? 5ch: ‘Kyushu Is a Battleground for Stars’

From our other sites

The story

A thread that started with the question “Why are there so many talented members from Kyushu?” saw names pour in one after another — Hello! Project members born in Kyushu like Reina Tanaka, Erina Ikuta, Moe Kamikokuryo, Misumi Tsutsui, Marin Fukuda, Momoha Nagano, Miyu Yasuda, and Reina Uemura. The discussion expanded into comparisons with other regions, such as “Osaka is strong in the Sakamichi groups” and “AKB48 also has representatives from every prefecture,” and even grew into genealogical theories tracing back to Showa-era idols. Meanwhile, some pointed out that Okinawa used to be Rising Production’s turf, which made it harder for local talent to flow into Hello! Project, while opinions were divided on how Misumi Tsutsui’s changing image should be evaluated.

Re: #2
It's that incredible body, obviously.
6AnonymousOct 30, 2026 22:49
Not just Hello! Project — Kyushu's a battleground for celebrities in general.
7AnonymousOct 30, 2026 22:50
Wait, Fukuda's from Kyushu?
I thought she was from the Chugoku region (western Honshu, not China).
9AnonymousOct 30, 2026 22:54
Looking at idols overall, there's also Seiko Matsuda and Ayumi Hamasaki.
11AnonymousOct 30, 2026 22:56
Kyushu's always been strong.
That's exactly why the Kyushu members matter.
14AnonymousOct 30, 2026 23:02
Doing trainee activities while living in Kyushu
sounds really tough.
15AnonymousOct 30, 2026 23:03
Miyumiyu always replies if you wave her color, green.
Today she posted her reply-wink practice session on her blog again.
17AnonymousOct 30, 2026 23:04
There's not a single talented one in there lmao

Okinawa probably has talent too, but it's Rising Production's territory.
22AnonymousOct 30, 2026 23:09
Trainee Tamura looks totally Okinawan, at least in appearance.
23AnonymousOct 30, 2026 23:09
If you count parents and grandparents, Ogata and Ebata count too, huh.
24AnonymousOct 30, 2026 23:09
Surprising — I always imagined Okinawans singing and dancing year-round.
25AnonymousOct 30, 2026 23:11
Yamaguchi: Michishige
Fukuoka: Tanaka, Ikuta, Nagano
Saga: Tsutsui
Nagasaki: Fukuda

26AnonymousOct 30, 2026 23:11
So Okinawa's Rising, huh.
That crew really does have strong bonds.
Even now the old Okinawan members still get together.
27AnonymousOct 30, 2026 23:13
The ones who end up flowing into Hello! Project are the so-so ones even within Kyushu.
28AnonymousOct 30, 2026 23:14
Fukuoka's always been an especially fierce battleground.
For some reason Hello! Project is weak in Osaka though.
Why's that?
35AnonymousOct 30, 2026 23:30
Re: #28
Osaka's strong for the Sakamichi groups (Nogizaka46/Sakurazaka46/Hinatazaka46) — Nanase Nishino, Sayuri Matsumura, Nao Kosaka, Marion Masuda, Hono Tamura, Ten Yamazaki, Karin Fujiyoshi.
29AnonymousOct 30, 2026 23:16
Back when there wasn't even a concept of "idol" and people who wanted to be artists were auditioning like crazy, Tanaka was the champion of that era, so she's kind of in a league of her own —
though that goes for all the 1st-6th generation members, really.
31AnonymousOct 30, 2026 23:19
Now that you mention it, Kansai members rarely become the main pillars, huh.
32AnonymousOct 30, 2026 23:20
That's strong lol.
I want them to form a unit with the members named in the thread title.
33AnonymousOct 30, 2026 23:26
Because of my job, I used to come into contact with delinquents from all kinds of prefectures back in the day, and Fukuoka and Okinawa were by far the scariest.
36AnonymousOct 30, 2026 23:32
Fukuoka: Mariko Shinoda, Yuko Sugamoto, Yuki Yoda
Nagasaki: Neru Nagahama, Rikako Inoue (Yotsuba Kominato)
Kumamoto: Miku Tanaka
Oita: Rino Sashihara, Misa Eto, Rina Nakanishi (Riko Yamaguchi)
Kagoshima: Yuki Kashiwagi, Sakura Miyawaki, Yuno Ohara
40AnonymousOct 30, 2026 23:37
Re: #36
This lineup's got way more big names.
37AnonymousOct 30, 2026 23:34
Osaka's strong in underground idols too.
The underground idols who can actually sing have historically mostly been from Kansai.
39AnonymousOct 30, 2026 23:37
Akimoto's (producer Yasushi Akimoto, derogatorily nicknamed "Akiton/Akibuta") mass-produced idols are way too low quality, LOL

(´∀`(⊃*⊂)
42AnonymousOct 30, 2026 23:38
Speaking of the Showa era:
Fukuoka: Rumiko Koyanagi, Seiko Matsuda
Kagoshima: Mizue Takada
Kumamoto: Chisato Moritaka
48AnonymousOct 30, 2026 23:41
Oita had Iku Goto from Idoling!!!.
As for actresses, there's Eri Fukatsu and Nana Mori.
49AnonymousOct 30, 2026 23:41
Fukuoka's well known as an idol-production hotspot by now.

Seiko (Matsuda), Noripi (Noriko Sakai), Hamasaki (Ayumi), Ryoko Tani
Hashikan (Kanna Hashimoto), Mio Imada, Ige-chan, Elaiza (Ikeda)

It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say it all traces back to Mie Nakao.

(´∀`*)ウフフ

Re: #54
Knew it, but seeing it laid out like this, it's seriously old-school lol
59AnonymousOct 30, 2026 23:50
Isn't Tsutsui better now though?
I don't even remember the old Tsutsui at all.
71AnonymousOct 31, 2026 00:03
Re: #59
I think it's good, but conservative idol otaku who like long black hair are showing a rejection reaction.
There've always been gal-ish Hello! Project members like Tanaka or Fujimoto, so I don't get why that's an issue.
60AnonymousOct 30, 2026 23:50
Fukuoka: Hitomi Kuroki, Seiko Matsuda, Noriko Sakai, Yuka Itaya, Michiko Yoshise, Ayumi Hamasaki, Reina Tanaka, YUI, Yu Aoi, Yoko Ikuno, Mariko Oe, Mariko Shinoda, Anna Ishibashi, Riho Takada, Ito Ohno, Manami Miyaji, Mizuki Yamamoto, Yo Yoshida, Mariya Nishiuchi, Miyu Yoshimoto, Kanna Hashimoto, Mio Imada, Satoko Miyata, Seika Inoue, Yuki Yoda, Nao, Elaiza Ikeda, Yuki Sakurai, Hiroe Igeta, Hikaru Morita, Miku Ichinose

Re: #60
What are you trying to do by only including Tanaka?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

While Hello! Project recruits trainees through nationwide auditions, the thread pointed out that Okinawa used to be the home turf of Rising Production — the agency behind stars like Namie Amuro and SPEED — which made it harder for local talent to flow into the Hello! Project lineage. As for Osaka, the region has fertile ground for the “Sakamichi” groups like Nogizaka46 and Hinatazaka46, creating a structure where talent tends to gather in outlets other than Hello! Project. This kind of “every region has its own idol lineage” talk is a classic 5ch topic, often traced back to Showa-era stars like Seiko Matsuda and Ayumi Hamasaki, but it’s worth noting this is purely anecdotal and not backed by any real statistics. Another point of debate in the thread was how differently people reacted to Misumi Tsutsui’s current image change, depending on generation or fan type.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project) thread “Why Are Kyushu Members All So Talented? Reina Tanaka, Erina Ikuta, Moe Kamikokuryo, Misumi Tsutsui, Marin Fukuda, Momoha Nagano, Miyu Yasuda, Reina Uemura.”
