The story

Sony has unveiled a new compact monitor that displays 3D visuals without the need for glasses. Priced at an estimated 54,000 yen, it reportedly makes characters look as though they’ve been “summoned” onto your desktop. On 5ch’s Hardware & Industry (Geha) board, skeptical voices invoking the failed rollouts of 3D TVs and the Nintendo 3DS’s glasses-free 3D feature mixed with astonished reactions to footage that genuinely appeared to pop out of the screen. While many praised Sony’s technical prowess, some pointed out that it remains unclear whether this technology will ever make its way into a PlayStation.

I wonder what this actually looks like in person
4AnonymousOct 28, 2026 14:55
3D TVs never took off and just quietly disappeared, remember?
17AnonymousOct 28, 2026 15:06
Re: #4
That's because those needed glasses
73AnonymousOct 28, 2026 17:38
The 3DS already failed at this, and now, of all times?
Re: #4
3D TVs died instantly because they didn't put the feature on every TV
5AnonymousOct 28, 2026 14:57
Isn't glasses-free 3D supposed to wreck your eyesight? I saw people posting about that constantly back in the 3DS days

Re: #5
A boomerang that took a REALLY long time to come back around lol
6AnonymousOct 28, 2026 14:57
If it's really like that it'd be amazing, but it'll probably just end up being underwhelming
8AnonymousOct 28, 2026 14:59
Go to any pachinko parlor, they've already got tons of this stuff
9AnonymousOct 28, 2026 15:01
This is nice.
Setting console-war arguments aside, this just feels like good old Japanese tech and it puts me in a good mood.
The monitor was smaller than I expected, but it still has real presence for its size.
That said, knowing Sony and how little its divisions talk to each other,
I seriously doubt this tech will ever make it into a PlayStation
10AnonymousOct 28, 2026 15:01
Knowing Sony, they'll probably start streaming 3D movies to go with it too
11AnonymousOct 28, 2026 15:02
If it turns out bad it'll just quietly die, but if it's good, Chinese manufacturers will rip it off and that'll be the end of it
15AnonymousOct 28, 2026 15:05
It was smaller than I'd imagined
55AnonymousOct 28, 2026 16:21
Re: #15
The difference in viewing distance between your two eyes affects this, so I'd guess a large glasses-free 3D monitor just isn't possible?
18AnonymousOct 28, 2026 15:07
They put out a 3D-capable Xperia phone before too, and it vanished in an instant
20AnonymousOct 28, 2026 15:09
Re: #18
Was there actually a 3D Xperia?
I know Sharp made one, but…
21AnonymousOct 28, 2026 15:10
I thought the 3DS's visuals were impressive too.
It's just that actually playing games on it was tiring.
Maybe glasses-free 3D is best suited for use as a display piece/objet rather than for gaming
23AnonymousOct 28, 2026 15:13
Everyone turned the 3D feature off on their 3DS anyway

This seems pointless
24AnonymousOct 28, 2026 15:13
So Sony's tech has finally caught up to Nintendo… from 15 years ago
42AnonymousOct 28, 2026 15:46
It's actually sticking out past the edge of the screen —
how does that even work?
44AnonymousOct 28, 2026 15:47
Re: #42
Probably needs the optional side panels for that
49AnonymousOct 28, 2026 15:53
Re: #42
That's probably just a promotional mockup image

Apparently they're putting it on display in Ginza and Nagoya, I'll go check it out if I get the chance

That's near my workplace, might swing by and take a look sometime
74AnonymousOct 28, 2026 17:43
Sounds like how it looks might depend on how much of a Sony believer you are
76AnonymousOct 28, 2026 17:45
Re: #74
It'll look different even if you're not a believer
79AnonymousOct 28, 2026 17:57
84AnonymousOct 28, 2026 18:05
I figured it was probably just a monitor with a built-in camera that scans the viewer's position and shows an image adjusted accordingly, faking a 3D effect…
But partway through, I saw something genuinely pop out of the screen and it blew my mind. What kind of tech is this?

88AnonymousOct 28, 2026 18:09
What matters isn't whether it's a "product" (something that gets made), but whether it can become a "commodity" (something people actually buy).

Because Sony-kun always loses the plot right at that step

Re: #88
There was a piece of junk called the 3DS that lost the plot exactly like that

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Glasses-free 3D is a technology that uses parallax between the eyes to recreate a sense of depth. There are past commercial examples such as the Nintendo 3DS (2011) and glasses-based 3D TVs, but none of them became major hits. How the effect looks tends to shift depending on viewing position and screen size, and the thread raised the point that “glasses-free 3D on a large monitor is probably difficult, given the difference in viewing distance between a person’s two eyes.” This new product is slated to be shown as a working demo unit at Sony Store locations in Ginza and Nagoya. Separate from views on the technology itself, the thread’s split in opinion largely comes down to the fact that users who remember how past 3D devices failed to catch on tend to take a more cautious view of this product’s commercial chances.
