Manga “Course Change” Debate — 5ch: “Honestly, a Lot of Manga Get Better After Changing Direction”

From our other sites

The story

A thread on 5channel’s “Anything-Goes Live” board asked, “Are there any manga you liked better for their original direction?” Alongside nostalgic shoutouts to HUNTER×HUNTER’s hunting-exam roots and the tension of Ajin, posters quickly brought up series like Kinnikuman and BADBOYS that exploded in popularity after changing course. The thread also saw the observation that “a lot of manga actually get better after a course change,” turning a simple taste comparison into a broader discussion of why these shifts in direction happen in the first place.

What people said

"Loved the early days when they were just helping people out,"
and "that tension of not knowing who might die next was great."
8AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:17
Sounds like it turned into a 'vengeance-broker' story.
Don't need some vengeance-broker-org vs. vengeance-broker-org thing.
10AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:18
Re: #8
Yeah, nobody's really asking for rival-professional battles.
13AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:19
Wasn't Ajin's original creator basically gone? It got more interesting once they were out of the picture.
38AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:23
Re: #13
Apparently the original creator of Ajin only worked out the initial setup and then basically went dark.
So the artist ended up plotting the whole rest of the story.
48AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:25
Re: #38
But thanks to that, we got a final boss whose motive was literally "I got bored of it," which was wild but honestly refreshing.
72AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:32
Re: #38
So Sato going off the rails was all the artist's creation?
14AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:19
For Hunter x Hunter, I liked the early days when fights didn't rely on Nen/aura powers at all.
25AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:21
Re: #14
I wish they hadn't ditched the fishing rod.
18AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:20
On the flip side, any manga where the early vibe was trash but it transformed after a course change?
26AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:21
Re: #18
BADBOYS
28AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:22
Re: #18
Gotta be Kinnikuman.
29AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:22
Re: #18
Stuff like Duel Masters or Korokke! — the whole CoroCoro Comic lineup.
19AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:20
Funny how a lot of manga end up more interesting after the course change.
27AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:21
Re: #19
Well, if the change flops, the series just ends, so…
21AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:21
Kekkaishi — once the older brother showed up, things went full "Manchurian Incident" levels of crazy.
110AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:43
Re: #21
Same.
It really felt like the story never circled back to the main character before it ended.
61AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:30
Manga in minor magazines that kill people off early on somehow always end up turning into this cozy, nobody-on-our-side-ever-dies lukewarm bath partway through.
63AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:30
Re: #61
That's Berserk.
71AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:32
Re: #61
They probably only killed people off for the cliffhanger shock value — the author isn't necessarily into writing that heavy a story all the time.
68AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:32
Wait, what about Vinland Saga?
That whole series was built around Askeladd anyway.
79AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:34
Re: #68
Fair.
The back half just isn't that fun.
82AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:35
Re: #68
Right, Askeladd's rampage was the peak of that series.
Apparently a lot of fans felt unsatisfied with the farm arc, where Thorfinn basically turned into a Rurouni Kenshin type (a reformed killer who's sworn off violence).
73AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:32
What was that manga by Nisio Isin again?
The one with the student-council-president-type girl as the lead.
75AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:33
Re: #73
Wasn't that a battle manga from the start?
85AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:35
Re: #73
Medaka Box started out more like "fixing the school's problems" stuff.
86AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:35
Gotta be Higanjima.
It wasn't a gag manga at first.
97AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:38
Re: #86
Nah, it's been like that since chapter 1.

87AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:36
Dragon Ball isn't wrong exactly, but I am curious what it would've looked like if it had stayed an adventure story like the early chapters all the way to the end.
91AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:37
Re: #87
If Oolong-as-villain had lasted even 5 or 6 volumes, that'd be impressive.
94AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:38
Re: #87
Yeah, that would've been tough to sustain.
102AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:40
Re: #87
At least I wish Gold Horn and Silver Horn had shown up.
108AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:42
No mention of Jujutsu Kaisen yet, huh.
109AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:43
Re: #108
Did that manga really change direction that much though?
115AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:44
Re: #108
The hero getting put on a wanted list just made it darker — that's not really a course change.
121AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:50
WataMote (Watashi ga Motenai no wa Dou Kangaetemo Omaera ga Warui!)

Once she just normally started making friends, it got boring.
130AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:52
Re: #121
Honestly the "hot streak" was only during that short stretch from the school trip to the second-year closing ceremony.
That's like just 10-20% of the total volumes.
131AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:52
Re: #121
Haven't read it so I can't speak to that one specifically,
but there's definitely a phenomenon where an unlucky protagonist becoming normally fortunate just isn't as interesting.
126AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:51
It's true The Promised Neverland is at its best up through the escape, but if you ask whether it'd stay fun if that part just kept going…
128AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:52
Re: #126
Attack on Titan handled that transition well, come to think of it.
136AnonymousOct 28, 2026 12:52
Re: #126
Yeah, you can't keep that going forever.
And when it did lose steam, it felt more like "the best part just ended" rather than an actual course change.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

In shonen manga, it’s not unusual for a series’ direction to shift as serialization drags on — the original premise alone often can’t sustain the story, and reader-popularity polls or editorial policy end up steering things. The thread’s mention of Ajin was framed as one such case, where the original creator reportedly let go of the story concept early on, leaving the artist to drive the plot from there. Opinions split mainly over whether to view a course change as “a compromise that dilutes the original appeal” or “a necessary evolution for keeping a long-running series alive” — and it’s notable that both camps kept circling back to the same titles, like Ajin, Hunter x Hunter, and Vinland Saga. These shifts are often driven not just by the author’s own intentions but by the magazine’s commercial calculations too, though the thread never got into those specifics.
